00:05I'm Don Chennair. I'm a mechanic and self-taught engineer.
00:13For the last seven years, I've been helping people to fix their treasures on the repair shop.
00:19My God! That's got me my surprise.
00:22Now, together with my wife Maria...
00:24I still think we should have a castle door.
00:26You don't know about the castle.
00:28Are you helpful? Very helpful.
00:31And dog Wendy.
00:33Come on, inside. Test it out for us.
00:36Yeah, very good. That is going to be your seat from now on.
00:39We're embarking on a more personal adventure.
00:43We've packed up our lives in Kent.
00:45This is it. I'm done. We are out of here.
00:48And moved to our dream Cornish farmhouse, complete with outbuildings and two-acre garden.
00:56There's a lot to do, but my first priority is transforming the derelict, very smelly cow shed.
01:03This is very strange.
01:04Into a modern, Cornish weather-proof workshop.
01:08Look at it.
01:10To help me settle into my new home, I'm going to use my skills to fix things in the local
01:16community.
01:17This is what it's all about for me, getting involved with people that need my help.
01:21I've recruited my new local friend and fellow engineering nut, Sam Lovegrove, to help.
01:27Yeah, now we're moving.
01:29Just like the Formula One teams, hey?
01:31As we hunt for some Cornish treasures...
01:33What are they doing here? Why are they not in the field?
01:36Wanted to come and say hello.
01:38...that need fixing...
01:39Hey!
01:40Look at that.
01:41Yes!
01:41...and polishing.
01:43I've got the vision.
01:44You guys have to deliver it, Sam.
01:46Yeah!
01:47Thank you so much.
01:49It's a whole community and more that enjoy this.
01:54Even the chicken's happy about it.
02:02One of the joys of having two acres is there's plenty of room for all my new ambitious projects,
02:09inside the workshop and out.
02:12But as a newcomer to the region, I've also discovered the real challenge can be accessing this lovely space.
02:19I've been here now for a couple of months and I've been driving around in my van.
02:24Cornish lanes are so narrow and so tight, especially around here.
02:28I'm so sick of being forced to drive into the bush and scraping the whole side of my van on
02:34some brambles and bushes.
02:36It brings me to tears almost every time, so I've made a purchase and I've bought myself an old Defender.
02:45I'm a big fan of buying stuff off the internet, but sometimes end up regretting not seeing things in the
02:51flesh first.
02:52So, fingers crossed, it's going to arrive in one piece.
02:57I'm expecting delivery today, but I'm not the only one who's finding local transport a challenge.
03:03All right, hang on. Hello? How are you doing?
03:06Oh, you can't even get into the lane.
03:10Buying a house, buying a workshop, there's always a compromise.
03:13And the little lane on the way in here was the compromise, one of the compromises.
03:18It was a pain for me moving all my equipment in here and my machinery because it's so narrow, the
03:24trucks can't get down.
03:25So, I'm going to jump in the car, go and find him. I don't even know if the thing runs.
03:30I'm going to have to use Maria's much nicer vehicle and hope I can stay out of the bushes.
03:36All right, at least I know this one runs.
03:38Luckily, she won't need it as she's too busy with her new obsession, the garden.
03:43I think it was literally the first thing we did. Dom got the workshop keys.
03:49And because he needed to clean all of the cow poo and everything out of the workshop,
03:52down the side of the workshop were scaffolding boards that used to hold, I guess, the food or the bedding
03:57in.
03:58So, we just carried them up here, plonked them down, literally on top of the grass, no groundwork at all,
04:05and dwelled them together. Because we knew, after having been in limbo for so long before the move,
04:10we knew that the first thing we wanted to do was get some stuff in the ground.
04:13Broccoli, sweet corn, brussel sprouts, ready for Christmas.
04:19Very early, ready for Christmas.
04:21These are the carrots. Look, they're multicoloured ones.
04:24Oh, that one's got legs. But yeah, it's like purple ones.
04:30I don't know if we were conned and they're just not right, because some of these are just orange.
04:36Back in the lanes, things are getting tight again.
04:39Look, see, this is exactly the situation. This is what I mean. If I was in my transporter now,
04:44I'd be in that bush. Thank you. Scraping it down the side.
04:49Please be a massive truck around this corner.
04:53Oh, look.
04:56Look, there it is.
05:05Ah, it actually exists.
05:11Actually, it doesn't look that bad. It really doesn't.
05:15I was expecting it to be a lot worse than that.
05:17Fine. There had to be some rust. I couldn't buy a Defender and not have something rusty.
05:22Are you the driver? How are you doing, Dom?
05:25Nice to see you. Thank you so much. Sorry about the confusion.
05:28I understand what you mean now. There is absolutely no way this would get down that lane.
05:31Will it roll? Can we roll it off? Yeah, yeah.
05:34OK, perfect. Right.
05:38Oh, my. What's happened to the interior? Goodness me.
05:41Well, that's going to be Wendy's seat anyway, so that's fine.
05:46Right.
05:55Straight. We're looking good. Looking good.
05:59Well, the brakes and steering seem to work.
06:04Now for the important bit.
06:09Oh, yes.
06:13Oh, it sounds good.
06:15First turn.
06:16Right. That is absolutely brilliant.
06:19Right. Let's get back to the workshop.
06:22I'll have to come back and rescue Maria's car a little later.
06:33I feel a lot more comfortable driving the lanes in this, but on closer inspection,
06:38it looks like it's already been dragged through a hedge backwards.
06:45Oh, my goodness.
06:48I think, thinking about it now, all of the photos in the advert were from the other side.
06:54And I can see why.
06:56What has happened?
06:58The entire bed is completely distorted, and it goes into the inner arch as well.
07:05Oh, my goodness.
07:07And the bad news continues inside.
07:11It's absolutely disgusting in here.
07:13The interior is... Oh, Wendy.
07:16Oh, actually, Wendy, this is for you.
07:19Come on, inside. Test it out for us.
07:21Yeah, very good.
07:23What do you reckon, Wendy?
07:25You like it?
07:25Oh, yeah, look, perfect.
07:27That is going to be your seat from now on.
07:30I think that our previous farmer's dog has been sitting in there chewing it.
07:33Now, Wendy can carry on.
07:35But there is one thing I can't live with a second longer.
07:38This is horrible.
07:40I guess I understand.
07:42I think this used to belong to a farmer.
07:43A bit of sort of shelter and protection in there.
07:46But that has got to go.
07:48I've got, you know, the whole point of a pickup for me is I can put motorbikes and things
07:51and pick up trees and who knows what and be able to put them in the back.
07:54So that is the first thing to go.
08:00But we want to be caught while we're on the road.
08:03And this farmer back is not going to work.
08:16Oi!
08:16Oh, that was relatively controlled, actually.
08:30Perfect.
08:35That does look better, doesn't it?
08:37Yes.
08:38Definitely.
08:56After moving to Cornwall, one of the things I'm keen to do
09:00is use my skills to help my new local community.
09:05I've come to the beautiful village of Mousel to meet Chris, who's got a unique challenge
09:10that needs a creative solution.
09:13I've brought fellow engineer and Cornish local Sam Lovegrove along, too.
09:18He's my new friend and, like me, shares a passion for fixing things.
09:24Chris, hi.
09:25Hiya.
09:25Hey.
09:26Good to see you.
09:27Nice to see you.
09:28So, yeah, welcome to the pool.
09:30This is my little daughter Arlo.
09:32Hello.
09:33Hello.
09:33Arlo, are you OK?
09:33All right?
09:34And that's Noah.
09:35Who?
09:35They are itching to get in.
09:37They've been waiting for you, so...
09:39Aw.
09:40Do you want to jump in, girls?
09:42Yes.
09:42Yes?
09:42Yeah?
09:44They love it.
09:45You can't keep them out.
09:46Really?
09:46Yeah.
09:47Ready, girls?
09:49Oh, he's quite deep.
09:51She doesn't mess around, yeah.
09:52Go on, Noah.
09:55Good on them.
09:57This pool was created more than 50 years ago to give the local kids somewhere safe to swim.
10:02They made it by blasting a hole with dynamite borrowed from the local quarry.
10:07They didn't mess about in the 70s.
10:11But today, it needs something a little more subtle to keep it safe.
10:16It's all about the community.
10:17And the thing was, it was unusable, because it was so dangerous to try and walk around.
10:22The concrete had worn away, covered in algae, there were so many rocks in the pool.
10:28And I was chatting to one of the old guys who lived in the village who said,
10:31you know, well, the dads, every year, twice a year, would come down, take the bung out,
10:37empty the pool, clear all the rocks out, and make it safe.
10:40Give it all a good scrub.
10:41And I thought it was quite a good tradition to maybe get going again.
10:45You say about a bung, what exactly, what's the engineering of it?
10:49I'm interested, yeah.
10:50Is it a big sink plug?
10:51What have you got?
10:52The bung is the bane of my life.
10:53Okay.
10:53So the bung was put in specifically to drain the pool, to get all the big rocks out that
10:59the winter blows in.
11:00Yeah.
11:00But obviously, as soon as you undo the bung, all of this pool wants to exit through that hole.
11:08Yeah, with your arm.
11:09With my arm.
11:10Okay.
11:10So you're trying to physically pull a bung out of the pipe.
11:13Yes, yeah.
11:15I have to say, that doesn't sound the safest way to keep your pool clean,
11:19as Chris is about to demonstrate.
11:28So you're fighting all that pressure now.
11:30Wow, yeah, okay, okay.
11:32Yeah, I'm familiar with those.
11:34They're like a plumber's.
11:35That's what you'd get from a plumber's merchant.
11:37Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:38Definitely not intended for this.
11:40So look.
11:41Now the bung is out.
11:42That is now emptying quite quickly.
11:44Yeah, geez.
11:46Yeah, okay.
11:48Food for thought.
11:49A lot, a lot, a lot to think about, yeah.
12:11Me and Sam are back in the village of Mousel.
12:14We're hoping to come up with a safer solution for draining the pool.
12:19This rock pool is a tricky one.
12:21It really is an engineering challenge, sorting this out.
12:24We've both been thinking and trying to plan and have to think of an idea,
12:27but we keep concluding that we need some measurements.
12:31Got the measuring equipment.
12:32I'm glad you're prepared.
12:34One of us is going to have to go in there with some calipers
12:37and measure the diameter of that pipe that's sticking out the wall.
12:40Yeah.
12:40But look who's in there.
12:42Are you frightened?
12:42I am frightened, yeah.
12:44It's a jellyfish.
12:45Look how big it is, yeah.
12:46Tell you what.
12:47They're not going to jump, are they?
12:48I don't really mind, because I'm going to stay on the dry.
12:51Give me the notepad.
12:52I'm drawing and taking measurements.
12:53You keep an eye out for the clear jellyfish.
12:56Oh, so you're all worried about them now?
12:58No, I'm not worried.
12:59I'm just, you know...
13:00Well, it sounds like it, Sam.
13:01I'm cautious.
13:02Yeah.
13:02Oh, and slightly cold.
13:04And cold.
13:05How is it?
13:06Actually, it's not bad.
13:08Nothing like the presence of a jellyfish to focus the mind.
13:11Also, at the bottom, the pipe doesn't protrude.
13:14It's not sticking out enough to put a flange around the outside of it,
13:18as hoped.
13:21Can we push something in?
13:22Yeah, I'm wondering that.
13:23It's just harder to seal.
13:24Yeah.
13:25Look, hang on.
13:26Hold the line.
13:26If the tube is like that...
13:30Yeah.
13:30..sticking out of the wall...
13:31Yeah.
13:33If you turned up the top hat section like that...
13:38Yeah.
13:38..then you could...
13:39That would fit inside, if that came into, like, here somewhere...
13:43Yeah.
13:43..you could drill three holes...
13:46..and that is now a machined surface...
13:50Yeah.
13:50..that you can weld the pivot on for the flappage.
13:53Yeah, that'll work.
13:54Let's get some dimensions on it.
13:56OK, good.
13:57I think we're closer.
13:59Are we getting there?
14:00It was worth getting into your shorts.
14:02Definitely.
14:03Yeah.
14:03I knew it was necessary for him to look.
14:05So, after a few more calculations, and Sam safely out the pool,
14:10we think we might have a plan.
14:28Back home, I've got my new vehicle safely inside the workshop.
14:32But it looks like underneath might be as bad as the bodywork.
14:36The whole back crossmember is completely rotten.
14:40Bearing in mind, I've got this so that we can tow projects around,
14:44the pickup projects, and the tow bar is attached to that crossmember,
14:49I'm going to need to replace it.
14:51That steel bar provides support for the chassis, engine and transmission,
14:56so it needs to be in good nick.
14:59I'm basically about to cut the whole back of the chassis off,
15:02and this rear crossmember is tying the two chassis legs.
15:06These run all the way down the length of the car
15:08and are tied together with this bit at the back.
15:10It's a really, really structurally important part,
15:13which is why I need to replace it, because it's rusty.
15:15So, I think I need to cut, weld a piece of steel across
15:18to hold the chassis legs where they are.
15:21Then I can cut further back and my little brace will hold it nice and tight together.
15:26Then I can prepare the area, trim and offer up the new piece.
15:33These cock... I thought cockerels just did that in the morning.
15:36First thing in the morning, just to wake you up, to wake everyone up.
15:41They seem to just... all day, all day.
15:59All right, we'll stick that in there.
16:03Everything's trimmed and ready. Let's put it on forever.
16:06Ah, there we go. Oh, that is so satisfying.
16:09I need to do a little bit of fiddling around now to make sure that this crossmember's even
16:12as far as it needs to be, and there's a little bit of movement.
16:15All of these holes are ovalised, sort of elongated,
16:18to allow a little bit of movement, and then we can fire up the welder.
16:25That's it.
16:28One rear crossmember installed.
16:47Although we've only just arrived in Cornwall, something that I've quickly learned about
16:52taking over management of a two-acre site is that there's always something that needs doing.
16:58On top of everything else that's going on with the house, the garden, the field, the pond,
17:03the workshop, part of buying this place meant taking part ownership of this lane,
17:10which means all these potholes and dips and ruts is now my responsibility.
17:15Of course it is. One more thing. And on top of all of that, every time John,
17:22who does the ground works here, every time he turns up in his truck,
17:26he moans at me because of the state of the lane on the way in and his truck grounds out.
17:30So I thought this area is quite bad.
17:32Yes. Your problem is the puddles. Once you get a puddle starting,
17:36when the tyres go through, it chucks all the fines to the side. It just continuously happens
17:41until you end up with a deeper puddle. All the sandy small bits get shoved out.
17:44So you need to get rid of the water. Yeah.
17:47John's brought a rock crusher with him, which he thinks could help provide a solution.
17:52So do you reckon if we can crush enough stuff to fill any of these?
17:55Yeah, we could start. Even if it temporarily makes it better?
17:58Yeah, he needs rolling to do a proper job.
18:01You need a steamroller. Tell me about it.
18:02Well, I'm trying. Get a checkbook out. Let's go steamroller shopping.
18:12Sadly, the steamroller will have to wait,
18:14but that rock crusher is going to need something to drive it,
18:17and John's got the perfect thing.
18:21What a beauty. Yeah, she's lovely.
18:23Oh, this is your one. Yeah, original working condition.
18:27What year is it? 1948.
18:2948? Yeah, 1948.
18:31Yeah, so she's, what, nearly 78 years old.
18:34And it's a Field Marshal.
18:35Field Marshal Series 2, one of about, well, it's a contractor,
18:39so one of about 7,000 made.
18:41Fantastic. They are my favourite tractor. I've loved them for years.
18:44Yeah, yeah.
18:44Just the sound of single-cylinder diesel.
18:47Same. I'm hooked.
18:49Oh, man.
18:50So these were designed as a, like a contractor's kind of tractor,
18:55so they could either sit there all day driving a thrashing set or crash or, you know,
19:01anything needed driving. And then, on the other hand, you could just plough right behind it,
19:06a trail plough, and then you've got the winch on the back of them as well.
19:10So some of these could have just spent their life as a stationary engine powering a machine.
19:15Potentially, yeah. Which is basically what we're doing today.
19:17Basically what we're doing, yeah.
19:18What perfect tool to use to turn that thing.
19:21Yeah. The plan is to feed the crusher with some of the waste concrete I found around the workshop.
19:28Right, shall we get this off? Yep.
19:35Got to love the sound of that engine.
19:38You can always see the piston going.
19:50Oh, God.
19:55Straight, yeah.
19:57Maybe right a tiny bit.
19:59Just need to get it lined up properly with our crusher.
20:03Yeah, that's good.
20:06Yeah.
20:08Most belts on your engine, like a fan belt, would have ribs or a V,
20:14which would keep it in line and hold it onto its pulley.
20:17This belt that's driving this massive machine from that tractor is just flat.
20:24There's nothing holding it from jumping off the belt, so it's so, off the pulley.
20:30Other than, well, alignment is absolutely key, so that's what we're up to now.
20:34So if you stay away from that for a minute.
20:38After a little to and fro, I'd be a bit too much.
20:46That is so cool.
20:56And that's it, run it now.
20:58That's it.
20:58The tractor will sit there and do that all day.
21:00So you'll sit there, handbrake's on.
21:01This is spinning along nicely.
21:02Yeah.
21:04Yeah.
21:04So what do you do?
21:05Put the digger bucket under there.
21:07Yes.
21:07And then it goes straight into the digger bucket.
21:09Yeah.
21:10Yeah.
21:11I'd better get some granite.
21:12I'd better get some bits of rock, better I.
21:14Yeah, and I'll get the digger.
21:15Yeah.
21:15Right on.
21:32I'm excited to say that John's got the rock crusher going, so all it needs now is something to feed
21:38it.
21:40All right, let's do it.
21:43Let's do it.
21:44Can I always just chuck it in?
21:45Yeah, go for it.
21:46All right, first piece.
21:55It's like it's nothing.
21:56My God.
21:58That's it.
21:59It just chewed it up like nothing.
22:00Yeah.
22:02Wow.
22:05This is quite addictive, actually.
22:08Do you reckon it'll take a whole one?
22:09Oh, yeah.
22:10Yeah?
22:12Well, I'd say that answers that question.
22:15And it looks like my builder Spike and Maria have come to join the fun.
22:21It's so cool.
22:22Are you having a go?
22:23Go on.
22:24Have we got it?
22:24Yeah.
22:27I'd just straighten the jaws.
22:29I'd just chuck it in there.
22:31All right, go on.
22:40And after a few more blocks.
22:46Amazing, isn't it?
22:50John, that is literally the last bit of rubble.
22:53I've run out.
22:53I've literally run out.
22:54Happy days.
22:55Amazing.
22:57Let's get this down on the lane.
22:58Yeah, okay, no worries.
23:02Perfect.
23:04It's time for the even more satisfying bit, filling those potholes.
23:15Stop.
23:16That's it.
23:16Wow.
23:20That's more like it.
23:24Oh, man.
23:28I don't need the spade.
23:29I thought I was going to be shoveling this.
23:38Absolutely brilliant.
23:39Good.
23:40So much better.
23:41Thank you so much.
23:42That is so much better.
23:43Good.
23:44I could do this all day.
23:46Just carry on all the way down.
23:48Man.
23:49Yeah, good.
23:52It's amazing what you can achieve when you cross a digger with a rock crusher and a 1948 field marshal.
23:59It's going to make such a difference.
24:01There's all the little bits of granite.
24:04This is how long this is going to last now.
24:07One more job down.
24:08Only another 999 to go.
24:22And next on that long list of things to fix is that plug for the Mausel rock pool.
24:29I chalked out a plan to create a safer way to empty the seawater.
24:33And now that plan's in stainless steel.
24:36Sam's back to help check out the results.
24:39So this is basically a waste pipe.
24:42Bung.
24:43Bung.
24:43Yeah.
24:44That you use generally when you're working on sewerage system.
24:47And that's what they're using currently in the seapool.
24:50Yes.
24:50So that's all they've got in there.
24:52Yeah.
24:53So basically I like the design, because as these plates compress, this expands.
24:57Not only does it seal, but it grabs the pipe.
25:00Yes.
25:01So I'm just going with something we already know works, because you can't beat that.
25:08You know, just take this off.
25:09And we're going to pinch the rubber off this.
25:13So these just have these flanges that sit inside this sort of, it's like a slick tire.
25:19Yeah, it's nice.
25:20We've had all this rough machined by a local marine engineer.
25:24And then I've taken it home and finished it all on my lathe.
25:27OK.
25:27You know, that's a much nicer, stronger version.
25:30So basically I've made a clamp out of those.
25:32And these are our...
25:34So we're going to clamp up with these bolts.
25:38So these little tags weld in here, three of them.
25:43Right.
25:44So one there, one there, one there.
25:47They are in the flange, which is in the bottom of the tube.
25:51We then weld the tube on, and then weld a door on with a little hinge.
25:58This slides up inside the pipe.
26:01It's a steel pipe encapsulated in the concrete.
26:05Yeah.
26:06So it's super strong.
26:08Yeah, yeah.
26:08Having a hinged door means Chris won't have to physically remove the plug.
26:12He can just open and shut it instead.
26:15Much safer all round.
26:17Yeah, this one sounds good.
26:18So we just need to weld all these bits together.
26:20Yeah.
26:21And then get down to the rock pool.
26:23Yeah.
26:26I need to make sure my welding is up to scratch,
26:29as this new plug needs to be pretty tough to stand up to those Cornish saltwater tides.
26:36I'm also going to create an additional seal made from neoprene.
26:40It's a synthetic rubber that you find in wetsuits,
26:43and it should make things even more watertight.
26:47Now the neoprene's in, the lid's shut.
26:49Yeah, yeah.
26:49The bolts are done up, all the welds are on.
26:52If we fill it with water...
26:53It's a great idea.
26:55It's like the reverse of this being in the rock pool, stopping the water go through.
26:59Come on.
27:00I'm here, I'm ready.
27:02Is it going to leak?
27:03Come and just chuck it in.
27:04Is it going to leak?
27:05Chuck it in.
27:05What do you think?
27:06Probably, yeah.
27:08Until we fettle, because we haven't fettled it yet.
27:15Yes, it's good.
27:17Yeah, yeah, yeah.
27:17It's good.
27:18Yeah.
27:19That's as good as sealed.
27:21Looks like my chalk designs and welding skills have passed the workshop test.
27:27But there's only going to be one way to find out if they hold up to the demands of the
27:32Atlantic Ocean.
27:45Before we return to Mousel, I've roped in Sam to help me get my vehicle back looking its best.
27:52This is paint stripper, very strong paint stripper.
27:55I'm stripping off all of this horrible green.
27:58I don't really like the green and I have a plan for the look of this car and it's not
28:03green.
28:04I'm going for a non-painted bare aluminium body.
28:08So I'm happy to be pretty liberal with the paint stripper.
28:11This is also going to help Sam to hammer these dents out because getting the paint out of the way
28:17is going to help to actually see the metal, see what we're actually working with.
28:21Make sure there's no filler under there or who knows what.
28:26I feel sure those Cornish roads are going to put a few dents into this machine, but I want them
28:32to be my own dents.
28:34So Sam's hydraulic ram will help iron out these old ones.
28:39Now, where are we at with the end of the ram?
28:41Are we too short?
28:43Too short.
28:43That's all right because we've got a whole load of different length extensions.
28:48A piece of wood.
28:49It's a good theory, isn't it?
28:51I need a cushion to kneel on.
28:53Ready?
28:55As ready, I think, as I'll ever be.
28:57I'm going to put my goggles on.
28:58That ram will push the damaged bodywork, forcing the dent out.
29:04Look at that.
29:06Isn't that nice?
29:09I'm just going to try and get the lines straight.
29:15All right, we're not looking for a show winner.
29:17We just want a headlight in the right direction, that's all.
29:19No, it's got to be nice.
29:24Pump it.
29:25Yeah.
29:26OK, it's starting.
29:27Yeah.
29:28Can you see?
29:28Yeah.
29:29Got it.
29:30Let's pop it in this corner of the bucket.
29:33So what we want is just to get that where it should be.
29:36Now, let's look.
29:36Is it supposed to be square, actually?
29:39Yes.
29:39I think it's flat.
29:40It's supposed to be flat.
29:42Great.
29:43That's exactly what I wanted.
29:49That's lovely.
29:50I feel like we should come up here.
29:53We're doing so well up here.
29:54Yes.
29:55We are doing so well up here.
29:56You know what I end up doing?
29:57When you're sort of looking at the difficult bit, I'm avoiding this for a minute.
30:01Can you tell?
30:02Yeah.
30:03Yeah.
30:04You know what we need?
30:06A bit of WD.
30:07The hydraulic arm isn't going to fit in that space, but I've got an idea.
30:12Did that come free with the bar?
30:15This?
30:16Yeah.
30:16Yeah, this was in my workshop in London.
30:17It's been everywhere.
30:18I've never used it.
30:19It's always just sat on a shelf.
30:20It looks like it'll free up.
30:21I hope so.
30:23Hopefully.
30:24That's a jack, basically.
30:25Yeah.
30:27Look, the threaded bit's working.
30:28Yeah, just that Tony Tony bit's not, but...
30:31That bit does.
30:35Here we go.
30:35It's working.
30:37So it was worth keeping for 15 years?
30:39Yeah, look, it's freed up for this one day.
30:41The double thread is cool, isn't it?
30:42Yeah, really nice.
30:45This looks to be a tricky one to fix,
30:47but this is why I brought everything with me when I moved from Kent.
30:52This goes to show keeping hold of junk for 15 years.
30:56I've had this little jack sitting on the shelf for over two workshop moves.
31:01It's probably over 15 years.
31:02Never used it.
31:03It sat on the shelf this whole time.
31:05Now, today's its day.
31:06It's perfect.
31:07It's doing just the job.
31:08So I'm going to basically use this ratchet to wind the jack out
31:11and push the side of the wing out that way.
31:15Is it coming out?
31:17It seems to be working.
31:18Yeah, yeah.
31:19It's going.
31:22See it's bulging out just there.
31:28I think it'd be nice to just try and get that out.
31:31Hang on.
31:32Maybe it's just a...
31:34Just a poke?
31:35Simple technology.
31:41Well, what this system lacks in finesse, it more than makes up for in results.
31:47Just another few more hundred to go.
32:00At my workshop, my new vehicle is starting to shape up.
32:04The paint stripper's done its job.
32:06The bodywork is better.
32:07Just need to improve things under the bonnet.
32:11So, I've asked local Land Rover specialist, Hallie, to add her expertise.
32:16Hello.
32:17Hey, how are you doing?
32:19Not too bad, you're all right?
32:20Good to see you.
32:20Thank you so much for coming to give us a hand.
32:22It's all right.
32:24Our first job is to sort the suspension.
32:27Basically, we need to get this whole unit, the whole contraption out.
32:30Yes, there's two nut bolts on the cup for the spring, which attaches it to the axle.
32:35Oh, yeah.
32:36And then there's four little nuts up here, not on the top of the damper,
32:39and then you're good to go.
32:40Then it all should just all fall apart.
32:43Easy as that.
32:48All right, if I hold that, are you on the...
32:52It doesn't want to come out. It doesn't want to be fixed.
32:55Well, it's getting fixed, so...
32:57Yeah, whether it likes it or not.
32:58Yeah.
33:00So, it's out with the old shock absorber.
33:03It's off.
33:04All right, it's coming up, is it?
33:05Do you want to grab that?
33:06OK, got it.
33:08There's one.
33:09There's another.
33:10Yes.
33:12Good as golden.
33:13It's out.
33:14It is.
33:15Brilliant.
33:16That is not going again.
33:19That's had its day.
33:21Now, for that spring.
33:24It should, and it should.
33:26I might need that box, actually, for some extra encouragement.
33:34Is it open on the box?
33:37Look at that.
33:37Yeah.
33:38Well, we'll see.
33:40How far in can I go?
33:41Or is it going to hit anything?
33:42Er, you've got a bit more room, but get it up, do you?
33:44Happy?
33:45Yeah.
33:45Not sure the box method is strictly in the manual, so I can't recommend you try this at home.
33:52Good things happening?
33:53I think so.
33:54I'm hoping.
33:56It's all a bit crispy.
33:58Things under tension like this, it does scare me a little bit.
34:02I can push down on...
34:04Hang on, if I...
34:07Ooh!
34:08There we go.
34:09Yes.
34:16Yes.
34:16So that is another piece for the graveyard.
34:20Yes.
34:20Yeah.
34:21That's had its day.
34:25Perfect.
34:26And now, the really fun bit.
34:29Replacing the old and rusty with the new and shiny.
34:33Look at that.
34:34It's nice, isn't it?
34:35Beauty.
34:37God, I can't wait to get this in, and suddenly it'll be a lot safer.
34:44Oh, it's so close.
34:46Well, well done.
34:47There's my hand gone.
34:49Make sure that is about right-ish.
34:54Axel stands all right?
34:55Yeah.
34:55Yeah, it was a minute ago, anyway.
34:58Ooh!
34:59It's always scary, isn't it?
35:00I can't wait to get the lift.
35:01This will be...
35:02Yeah.
35:03Yeah, the box is going to fall.
35:04So I'm going to come off completely now with this jack.
35:06Yeah. We don't need it on the jack any more.
35:07Not in a minute, no.
35:08You should be fine.
35:09Just need to add the new shock absorber.
35:12OK, right, I'm going to pass this down to you now.
35:14It's wonky.
35:16That one's in.
35:18Ooh.
35:19Too keen, too keen.
35:20Too keen.
35:21Pop her up the lip.
35:22Sorry.
35:23All right.
35:24I'm just getting excited, Ali, I'm sorry.
35:25Huh?
35:26Pop her back down.
35:27OK.
35:29There we go.
35:29Yes!
35:30That's a reassuring clunk.
35:31Yeah.
35:34Well, that's one down anyway.
35:43I'm just the helper at this point.
35:45Holding the spanners.
35:47Making the tea.
35:50Passing the nuts and bolts.
35:53Very good.
36:11And I'm pleased to say that, much like the Lamb Rover, me and Hallie are like a well-oiled machine.
36:20This is it.
36:21Here we go.
36:24Moment of truth.
36:25Exactly.
36:29Gently, gently.
36:35Oh, it's done.
36:37Nice.
36:43How's it look?
36:44I think we've done well, you know.
36:47I think so, too.
36:48It's been a day.
36:50Very much so.
36:51Love it.
36:52Oh, thank you.
36:53OK.
36:54I don't want to see any more rust today.
36:55No, exactly.
36:57Oh, brilliant.
36:58No, thank you.
36:59Thank you very, very much.
37:00You're welcome.
37:00I really appreciate it.
37:02Oh.
37:19Let's hit the road.
37:20With work now finished, I can't think of a better maiden voyage for my new vehicle than a trip to
37:26Mousel with Sam and our new Rockpool plug.
37:30I've got grinder, I've got cutting discs, bolts, washers.
37:35Radio?
37:36Yeah, no, all right.
37:38We'll listen to the sea.
37:40Speedos?
37:41No, you're going in.
37:42Don't forget, you're going in.
37:44Let's see if that new suspension works.
37:47Have you converted to electric windows, then?
37:50Have you got the keys?
37:51No, of course I haven't.
37:55That looks nice.
37:57Let's go to the seaside, please.
37:59I'm just thinking of an outing now.
38:01I've got the wrong shorts on.
38:03Oh, which way are we going?
38:04We're going off-road.
38:06I'm scared.
38:08Don't be scared.
38:09All right.
38:10Hey, you're going to leave that slope there, aren't you?
38:15Yeah, I quite enjoy it.
38:20This does run nicely.
38:22Doesn't it?
38:23How exciting.
38:24It's amazing, eh?
38:29Chris is waiting patiently for us at the pool, desperate to get the local kids back swimming.
38:36After, do you want me to carry anything?
38:38No, we're all right.
38:39Are you sure?
38:39Yeah, we'll just get to destination before our arms stretch anymore.
38:43How have you been?
38:44I've been good.
38:44I've been busy, yeah.
38:46We've come back at low tide, while the pool is empty, to give us the best chance of making this
38:51work.
38:51And to avoid jellyfish.
38:54OK.
38:54All right, what have we got?
38:55All right.
38:55This is it.
38:56We've been welding this up this morning.
38:58That looks a lot more...
38:59It's quite a dozen rule.
39:01It's quite substantial, eh?
39:01Oh, my gosh.
39:02So, you know, quite simply, you've got the bung, that end...
39:05Yeah.
39:06...with these three allen bolts...
39:08Yeah.
39:08...to clamp it up, but obviously a nice through hole.
39:11Yeah.
39:11So the bung is...
39:12So that goes in...
39:13The bung's not sealing it anymore.
39:14The bung's holding that in the tube.
39:16Yeah.
39:16And just seals, like, the mechanism, basically.
39:20So that will stay in...
39:21Can I feel the weight to it?
39:22Yeah, yeah.
39:22It's quite heavy.
39:23That won't ever come out.
39:25That's serious.
39:26Yeah, yeah, yeah.
39:26I like that.
39:27That's a proper bit of engineering.
39:28That feels like it's as old as the pool.
39:30Yeah, yeah, yeah.
39:31It will be here for a few years, I think.
39:32That's amazing.
39:33The idea is that that's overbuilt and very strong and very heavy, because that stays in this tube.
39:37Yeah.
39:38And you can just open that door on the other side to open it.
39:41That's awesome.
39:42And then if you flap open the door, you've got a neoprene seal on there.
39:46Yeah.
39:46Oh, great.
39:48Which we're hoping will hold the water in.
39:51Yeah.
39:51Hopefully.
39:51Well, we'll find out, right?
39:53Exactly.
39:55Let's hope we manage to get our measurements right.
39:58Right, here we go.
39:59Here we go.
40:00Moment of truth.
40:01Does it fit?
40:02Is it all?
40:03Oh, that's great.
40:04Not only does it fit, but it only just fits.
40:06That's perfect.
40:07That is good.
40:08And the hinge is right where we want it.
40:11It's the same principle as the bung happening before.
40:14It's squeezing it up, which is expanding that rubber tyre, which is fixing it.
40:20It's holding it to the inside of the tube.
40:21It's not sealing it because there's a hole through the middle.
40:23That's what the door does, but it's holding it in position.
40:26And then the neoprene pad and the clamp.
40:29That is the seal.
40:30That's the seal.
40:31So this is quite a good moment.
40:34It's done.
40:34It's done.
40:35I hope it helps.
40:38100% guaranteed to help.
40:40Yeah.
40:40Yeah, 100% guaranteed.
40:41Thank you so much.
40:42Great.
40:42Certainly.
40:42Well, you helped our community.
40:44You haven't helped me out.
40:44Well, on a personal level.
40:46Yeah, your safety, yeah.
40:48Your safety.
40:48But a bigger picture, it's like there's a whole community and more that enjoy this.
40:54Brilliant.
40:54I guess it's a waiting game now then.
40:59We now just need the tide to come in and fill the pool, so we can test whether our new
41:04door
41:04is secure enough to stop the water escaping while the kids are swimming.
41:15So, looking dry.
41:17What a relief.
41:18Isn't that amazing?
41:18What a relief.
41:20Look, that's what you want to see.
41:21That's the result.
41:22Perfect.
41:24Doesn't look like it's leaking.
41:25No.
41:26The rock pool is full and there's not a drop coming out of here.
41:29I am relieved.
41:31Yeah, that's amazing.
41:32Well done.
41:32Yeah, well done welding.
41:34Perfect.
41:35Right.
41:35Great job.
41:36Back home for the next round.
41:39The only way the water will drain is when Chris wants it to.
41:43By opening the door inside the pool.
41:45A much safer solution all round.
42:06Look at this.
42:08Oh, it's beautiful, isn't it?
42:09It's amazing.
42:11Although we've only just moved to Cornwall and are spending time adjusting to a new and
42:16very different way of life, I have to say, it's already beginning to feel a lot like home.
42:23Come on, Wendy, let's go.
42:24Come on.
42:26She's loving it.
42:32It's so crazy that people are literally down here on holiday and we get to live here.
42:36And they've, like, come down for their weeks off.
42:41Look, people surfing.
42:43Yeah, that'll be me.
42:45Trying, anyway, trying to surf.
42:47Well, that one will definitely be me, then, with Wendy on the front of the board.
42:51Yeah, exactly.
42:53And they're standing up, they're standing up.
42:54Oh, no, they're not standing up.
42:56They fell over.
42:58Maybe we'll leave the surfing for next summer, though.
43:06Next time, I tackle a broken beach buggy.
43:09That entire gap fills with sand.
43:12That's really dangerous.
43:13It is really dangerous.
43:15And I dig up problems creating a garden pond.
43:18How deep has it gone now?
43:19It's 65 metres at the moment, so.
43:2265.
43:23I hope another 15 metres to go.
43:25No.
43:49No.
43:52They Ephraim.
43:53No.
43:53No.
43:54No.
43:55No.
43:56No.
