00:00Good morning.
00:02This is another day of making our favorite small town better.
00:04Erin, we got to go, babe.
00:06Go pick some old sad houses.
00:08Ben, let's go.
00:09Growing up, I didn't see what was so special about Laurel.
00:12So every day we make sure our girls see it.
00:14Good morning, Katie.
00:15Hey.
00:16Can you believe we fixed up over 100 houses in Laurel?
00:18There's so much opportunity.
00:20So many unloved houses.
00:22I don't know what is going to go wrong in here today.
00:25I'm sure something.
00:27Girl, the bat just flew through here.
00:29That's not good.
00:31No way.
00:32We're about to see the house for the first time.
00:34This is the best part.
00:35Oh, my God.
00:37Holy cow.
00:38Are you serious right now?
00:40Ben, did you make this?
00:41Yeah, I made this.
00:43The real truth of living and working in your hometown is that you're going to see these people everywhere forever.
00:48It's your superpower, Erin.
00:50Color is her superpower.
00:51It is.
00:52It is perfect.
00:53Every day is different when you're renovating houses in Laurel, Mississippi.
01:05Are you excited?
01:06Just a little bit.
01:08What you think they're going to do?
01:09I'm just excited to get the Porsche holder makeover.
01:12Maybe re-screen it?
01:14That's something, though.
01:15Kay and Tecardo actually grew up in Laurel and have been friends since elementary school.
01:19And they have been sweethearts since high school.
01:22You ready to eat?
01:23Oh, yeah.
01:23Well, I hope you got an appetite.
01:25Oh, yeah.
01:25We've been trying to get married about 13 years.
01:29We're still working on it.
01:30We're trying to get there.
01:32I originally grew up in the house next door, this house.
01:36My dad bought sort of like an investment, and he was going to fix it up.
01:40He passed away.
01:41I moved in about two years before he passed.
01:44I didn't know a lot of things.
01:46Need to fix it.
01:47Kay owns the house, but Tecardo spends a ton of time here, and he's been helping Kay with
01:52the house whenever he can.
01:53They want a real proper home before they have a wedding, and it's taken time to save the
01:58money to do that.
01:59Every time we get close, something come up.
02:03They've helped a lot of family members over the years.
02:06All through high school, my mom was ill.
02:08She passed right before senior year.
02:12I knew I had to take care of my brother and my sister.
02:14Make sure that I was going to school, make sure that I was eating, and right after I asked
02:17my mom, then her dad, then my dad, then it was like...
02:22My aunt.
02:23Yeah.
02:23Then...
02:24One after another.
02:25Whenever a family member got sick or passed away, it was Kay and Tecardo who would step
02:29up and take care of things.
02:31Now, they feel like they're in a really good place to finally take care of this house.
02:35We have a $75,000 budget.
02:37We're hoping that this really turns this into a home.
02:43Oh, look at them roosters.
02:45It's late.
02:46They're going to lose a crop.
02:48Everybody loves Tecardo.
02:50Tecardo worked at Lot Furniture for years, which was right by our stores.
02:53We saw each other all the time.
02:55All the time.
02:56I worked at Lot for 13 years, met a lot of good people.
03:00It was one of the...
03:00It was the oldest store in Laurel.
03:02They cool, man.
03:03You're going to like them, though.
03:04You've known them for a long time?
03:06Long enough, yeah.
03:06Okay.
03:07Tecardo is Tony Stallworth's nephew.
03:11We're for sure putting Tony on this house.
03:13Hey.
03:15There you go right there.
03:15Oh, okay.
03:17Good.
03:17Hi.
03:18How y'all doing?
03:19We're good, stranger.
03:21Haven't seen you lately.
03:22I know a stranger.
03:23How are you?
03:24Y'all doing good?
03:25Yes.
03:25We're good.
03:26How are you?
03:26It's good to see you.
03:27Me too.
03:29This is a big day.
03:30Yeah.
03:30It is a big day.
03:32So this is your house?
03:33I've been here since 2012.
03:35Such a charming little house.
03:37There's a lot about it that's so classic.
03:38It's just getting a little wonky in its miles.
03:41Yeah.
03:42Yeah.
03:43So this house is two bedrooms, two baths.
03:45Yeah.
03:451,500 square feet.
03:47No air conditioning.
03:49None.
03:49None.
03:50How?
03:50Just cool thoughts.
03:51Trying that right now.
03:53Tell me the things that you love about this house.
03:55You've had a lot of time.
03:56I love the porch.
03:57Yeah.
03:58Yeah.
03:58It's a good porch.
03:59And y'all spend a lot of time there, right?
04:00Oh, yeah.
04:01Right.
04:01We're pretty much off the same day on Sunday.
04:03That's the only day we have off.
04:04Okay.
04:05And so we kind of meet up on the porch.
04:07To save money everywhere we can.
04:09We keep what's good.
04:10Okay.
04:10But there are some issues.
04:11We got foundation issues.
04:13Yes.
04:14It needs a roof.
04:15We got bats.
04:17Your gable vent needs some love.
04:19The bats have really done their thing.
04:23It's a pain to get rid of the bats.
04:25Most people don't even know where to begin to get rid of them.
04:29We have a little experience with this.
04:31Yes.
04:32First of all, let's just imagine if you no longer had bats.
04:35Okay.
04:36And we can dress this thing up a little bit.
04:38I love it.
04:39Yes?
04:40Yes.
04:40You still recognize it and it's still home?
04:42Yes.
04:43Okay.
04:43But better.
04:44Good.
04:44Trying to like give the house a little of a Creole cottage vibe.
04:48I think of little houses in New Orleans that are this color is what really put me down the path.
04:53Replace this gable vent and the screen door here.
04:56I love the door.
04:57Maybe some color with landscaping.
04:58Okay.
04:59Some flowers.
05:00Yeah, for sure.
05:01I love plants.
05:02I love plants.
05:30So I'm a plant mom.
05:31Cover your roof, the paint updates, the new walkway, foundation repair.
05:36And air conditioning.
05:37New air conditioning.
05:38Okay.
05:38Okay.
05:39You like it?
05:39That sounds good.
05:40You want to talk about the inside?
05:41Let's go.
05:42Get in out of this heat.
05:44Yeah.
05:48All right.
05:49Yeah.
05:50Like you've gone into a lot of trouble to make this into a real room with real furniture.
05:54That's the vibe I was going for.
05:55It's not just a porch.
05:56So we will honor that.
05:59Appreciate it.
06:00Yeah.
06:00Let's go on in.
06:01All right.
06:02Talk about the living room and the mystery room.
06:05Mystery room.
06:05Mystery room.
06:07All right.
06:08Oh, man.
06:09Whoa.
06:11Yeah.
06:12I bet you wish you had a ceiling fan in here to move air.
06:15I wish you had a ceiling.
06:17I don't know how you feel about paneling, but paint would make it feel totally different.
06:22I'm okay with it.
06:23I'm good with it.
06:24And once your roof is fixed, you wouldn't have a leak ever again, so then you could just
06:28do new sheetrock on the ceiling.
06:30Okay.
06:30Well, let's talk about the mystery room, okay?
06:32Yes.
06:32All right.
06:33What is...
06:33The mystery in the middle.
06:34The mystery room.
06:36It's more of a catch-all.
06:37It's a dining room.
06:39I'm sorry.
06:39It's so hot that I have to put on my hat to get wet hair off my face.
06:45All right.
06:45What was going on here?
06:46I set up a little date night, let's see.
06:49Oh.
06:49Yeah.
06:50And I actually had a dining room table in here.
06:52Dang.
06:52Dang, that's so Ben Napier of you.
06:54Aw.
06:55Is he a romantic...
06:56Are you a mushy, gushy romantic?
06:58He's a mushy, gushy.
06:59When you find a good romantic man who makes gestures like covering the back wall in greenery
07:06and special fairy lights to make you feel special on a date night, you keep that man.
07:12I'm getting the feeling that you don't have a dining room because maybe you don't need
07:17one.
07:17It's kind of like pity-pity.
07:19Yeah.
07:19Yes.
07:20Where are you eating food?
07:22Well, we have a little nook in the kitchen.
07:24Yeah.
07:25Well, it could be a dining room again.
07:27We have to give it an identity in here.
07:29I really don't know what to do with that middle room, and neither do they.
07:32So for these two rooms, paint the panel and sheetrock ceiling, we want to allot 10 grand.
07:38Okay.
07:38But you have to eat food somewhere.
07:40Yeah.
07:40Let's see the spot.
07:42I've heard about the spot.
07:43This is your favorite spot to sit.
07:44It is.
07:45Okay.
07:46And you want it to keep being your spot?
07:47I love this spot.
07:48I have friends that show up daily.
07:52Those critters.
07:53And you recognize them as the same squirrel and bird.
07:56They come every day.
07:57We got Oscar.
07:58Yeah.
07:59We got Heath.
08:01Oscar and Heath showed up one day, and they never left.
08:05Oscar is the squirrel.
08:06He comes to the window, and Heath is the bird.
08:10It's the cardinal.
08:11Okay.
08:11So you can tell there's something happening for sure in the subfloor when the towel does
08:16that.
08:16The subfloor and Joyce probably have some issues.
08:21Has this leaked?
08:22Is that what's happened?
08:23There's a leak somewhere under the kitchen sink.
08:26It's leaking into the floor, so it has like a sinky, rocky feeling.
08:30I don't think that's good.
08:32The kitchen will be the most expensive part.
08:35It would really be all about making sure we repair whatever has happened here.
08:41So I think we could keep the layout basically the same as far as plumbing, but change everything
08:49else.
08:49So if you pulled out everything that's in this room right now, you build new custom cabinetry
08:55where your sink is now.
08:57The sink would still be.
08:58Make room for a really economical, small dishwasher.
09:03I've never had this for last year.
09:05It's important to save money by not moving plumbing.
09:07That would help a lot.
09:08And then laminate countertops would also save a lot of money.
09:12This has gotten shabby, but you could do a new laminate countertop that feels like something
09:16new and different.
09:17Then you'd have new cabinetry on this wall all the way across with your range and your
09:22hood bent in the middle.
09:24You'd have tons of counter space and the flooring.
09:27Right now, the tile is cracked.
09:29We know there are problems.
09:30We'd have to do big repairs under there.
09:31Then I think it would save money and give it a fresh new look if we did rollout vinyl.
09:38There are some cool patterns out there.
09:40We could just make the kitchen work better for you, be more comfortable.
09:44I just want to get this color out.
09:46I know you love those like rich, moody deep teal navies and lots of natural wood.
09:52No more of this.
09:53No more of these.
09:54For everything that we're planning on doing with the house is about making it work.
09:59It'll still be a good, durable, solid kitchen, but we can do it for 30 grand.
10:04I'm cool with that.
10:05Okay.
10:06Sounds good to me.
10:07That's 75 grand.
10:08That gets you a new roof, fixes the foundation, new walkway, HVAC, no vats.
10:14A good kitchen, is that going to get us to the altar?
10:17That's who it's doing.
10:18Is that going to get us?
10:20What is it going to take?
10:22We already have a ring, right?
10:24Got a ring.
10:24Okay, we got a ring.
10:25That's covered.
10:26I ain't going to put that in the budget.
10:28That's not in the budget.
10:29That's not in the budget.
10:31We really shine with a house like this.
10:34I just love to prove the point that you can have a small budget, a very modest house, and you
10:39can make it beautiful.
10:40You really can.
10:50All right, watch the sink, Cole.
10:52We'll deal with that later.
10:54Okay, I want to get started on the screen porch, taking all the screens out, and then just ceiling tiles
10:59in here, right?
11:00Right.
11:00Only ceiling tiles.
11:01Kay has moved out and is staying in a rental in Hattiesburg, so we can finally fix this house for
11:06good.
11:07It's actually a pretty small demo.
11:09Made large by the heat.
11:12Bat feces is going to be big today.
11:15Mm-hmm.
11:16Everything can go.
11:17Like, even the floors and the joists and the subfloors, we know for sure they're rotten.
11:21Yeah.
11:22There's severe rot in the kitchen.
11:24Everything is wet.
11:25Under that towel, the towel moves.
11:27One, two, three, shoot.
11:34Okay, that's a joke.
11:41Better not have been a mirror.
11:43Dead gumming.
11:44I didn't need that luck.
11:48I love a screen porch.
11:50I do, too.
11:51That old screen is tough.
11:53Like, I bet it was put there in 1970-something.
12:03All these ceiling tiles have got to come down.
12:05I'm really worried about these tiles hitting me on the head, so I got my hard hat on.
12:09Right there with you.
12:10I do have this for you.
12:12What is this, painter's plastic?
12:14Protection, because, listen.
12:18What is that?
12:22It's the bats.
12:23That's the bats?
12:24They are right up there.
12:26When we start pulling this down, guano is going to be raining upon us.
12:32Mm.
12:34We just really don't want the back guano to fall on our heads.
12:39I didn't feel anything taking down the ceiling tile.
12:42I went to a different place.
12:44You dissociated?
12:45I dissociated with my body so that I would not feel what was happening to me in there.
12:50They are stirred up.
12:51We got them riled up now.
12:52They're going to come down here if we're not careful.
12:54I need them gone.
12:55I need them gone immediately.
12:58The snail.
12:59I cannot handle.
13:00Are you Batman?
13:02No, I'm Batman.
13:03Does that make me Robin?
13:04Yes.
13:06We gotta get these bats out of here, man.
13:07I'll call the Batman.
13:09You shined the light in the sky.
13:10I don't know how else you would.
13:14Huh?
13:14That's the Batman music.
13:15Was it?
13:16Yeah.
13:19But you could hear the bats.
13:21I'm going to go take a shower.
13:22Yes.
13:23Please do that.
13:29Today the bats have to go.
13:31Mm-hmm.
13:31They're protected.
13:32But they're federally protected in Mississippi.
13:34And they keep the mosquito population beat back a little bit.
13:38So when you have a bat infestation, you can't just exterminate them.
13:42You have to relocate them.
13:44And you have to call professionals who know how to do it correctly.
13:48Nathan, we've been demoing in here.
13:50Oh, yeah.
13:50If you can imagine it, the kitchen is actually better than it was.
13:54Nothing's rotten.
13:55It's just dirt.
13:56Oh, my goodness.
13:57You've heard of sunken dens.
13:59Well, this is a sunken kitchen.
14:01Yes.
14:02Yeah.
14:03You want to go to the bat cave?
14:04In this scenario, you're Batman.
14:06I'm Robin.
14:07Okay.
14:08Well, I like being Batman.
14:09Yeah.
14:10Take him to the bat cave, Robin.
14:18To get into the attic, you have to go through a scuttle hole that my shoulders touch on.
14:24No.
14:25I can't.
14:28The roof line is there.
14:30So I had to, like...
14:33I'm too tall.
14:35What is that?
14:36I don't like it.
14:37Luckily, I do yoga.
14:40Yoga!
14:42What now, Batman?
14:44Oh, gosh.
14:46If you want to just angle it more towards the front.
14:48Oh, the bat just flew through him.
14:50That's why I gave you that cap.
14:51Look right here on the side.
14:53So they'll come out the screen.
14:54They'll go through here where it's open at.
14:56Uh-huh.
14:57And they'll go in and then go out.
14:58But we'll go up there on the outside.
15:00We'll put up a one-way valve.
15:01A one-way door is what it is.
15:03Uh-huh.
15:04It'll allow them to come out, but they can't get back in.
15:06But it looks like they're coming in the front also.
15:09We got some over there, too.
15:11Shoot.
15:12Yeah.
15:12Is that them in that screen?
15:14Yeah, that's all them in that screen.
15:16Ugh.
15:17That over there is where they're coming in the most.
15:20And what we'll have to do is do the valve on all three of these areas
15:24so we can get all the bats out.
15:25So now that we have indeed located the bats,
15:28we know everywhere they're at,
15:29he is going to put a valve at every entrance.
15:32And that's the little trapdoor thing that the bats can fly through,
15:35but then they can't fly back.
15:36No more bats.
15:37No more smell.
15:38Then they'll seal off all the gables, all the openings.
15:40You see all that down there?
15:42Yes.
15:42That's all their guano.
15:44That's the stuff you don't want to stir up.
15:45Nope.
15:46He said that he will come by early in the morning next week
15:49to clean up the guano.
15:59Who's the oldest?
16:00He is.
16:01How many of y'all are there?
16:02Four.
16:03I'm the baby.
16:04You're the baby?
16:06Dadgum.
16:06I didn't know that we had baby brother in there.
16:09Anytime you can connect a family member to something you're building,
16:14it's always going to make it that much better.
16:16What was Ticardo like growing up?
16:19Ooh, it was rough.
16:20Very competitive sports, football, basketball, wrestling.
16:25Is it still competitive?
16:26It is.
16:27It is.
16:27Thanksgiving is the day we meet up and we get in the grass.
16:31You still wrestle?
16:32To this day.
16:33I want to build a new day bed for their front porch.
16:36I want that to stay the go-to spot.
16:38So that house is a little bit craftsman.
16:42So I want to build this like a couch that has these wide arms on it.
16:47So they can use those for like setting a glass of tea down or something.
16:51A rail across the front.
16:53You know, the mattress would be up here.
16:54That acts as the sofa and then we'll put pillows and stuff on the back and make it more comfortable.
16:58It's going to be the size of a standard twin size bed.
17:01Maybe add a little notch on the bottom just to give it a little bit of creative detail.
17:06And then up here on the top, I want to just add a little bit of a decorative piece.
17:12Just something to dress it up a little bit.
17:15But he'd have to fight me for it.
17:16Yeah, that'd be your spot, man.
17:19So I learned that Corey and Ticardo are really into wrestling.
17:23Not wrestling.
17:25Wrestling.
17:26Now you might be asking yourself, what's the difference between wrestling and wrestling?
17:30Wrestling is a sport.
17:33Wrestling is just some people having it out in the yard, but you're just trying to best each other.
17:40If you're building a daybed for a front porch that looks out onto a wrestling yard, it's bleachers.
17:47It's no longer a place to sit and read and take a nap.
17:50It's a place to sit and eat popcorn and cheer.
17:53Who's the thing going to win?
17:56All right, let's make some slats.
18:11Tony, Tony, Tony.
18:12What's going on, bitch?
18:14Missed you for demo.
18:15Y'all said y'all had bats.
18:17Not here.
18:18You don't do bats?
18:19No, I don't do bats, man.
18:20No.
18:21Tony's afraid of bats.
18:23Is that why he hasn't been here?
18:24That's why he's not been here.
18:25This is his family, and I've been wondering, where is Tony?
18:29Well, he's also been busy on other projects, but-
18:31I know he's been busy.
18:32He stays busy.
18:33I mean, it was literally the floor was caving in in here.
18:37Put me to work.
18:38Let's get it.
18:40We are putting in the new flooring system for the kitchen.
18:52It's miserable hot.
18:53I don't know how Kay and Ticardo were doing this.
18:56Have you ever been here?
18:58Yes.
18:58You ever, you'd come and hang out?
18:59Yes, but it was like in the cooler months, so.
19:02Check level.
19:03Check the level.
19:04Shouldn't be.
19:05Looks good to me.
19:07It's good.
19:11What's going on?
19:13The man that we have been waiting for.
19:17What's up, cool guy?
19:19What's up?
19:19It's hot.
19:20It is.
19:20I've never been more glad to see an HVAC man in my life.
19:25This house has never had air conditioning that we're seeing with HVAC, the HVAC, is that
19:31we don't have any.
19:32So they can start from a blank canvas, do it exactly however they want to.
19:38No more bats and no more blonna.
19:40And it won't be long now.
19:42We'll be working in the cool.
19:43It'll have heat and cool now.
19:53Mr. Gregg, we got you a floor.
19:56It's easier to install cabinets when you have a floor.
20:00Oh, gosh.
20:01Let me tell you something.
20:02That breeze you feel right now, you don't feel that inside this house.
20:06No, you don't.
20:07And the air still isn't connected to anything.
20:09Is this the sink?
20:11This is the sink.
20:12That's it.
20:12That's it.
20:13Nope, you got to save a space for the dishwasher.
20:15Those are going to have to move.
20:16There's going to be an 18-inch dishwasher.
20:18It's more dishwasher than they had before.
20:21I'm just trying to be efficient.
20:22This house is about making it livable first, beautiful second.
20:27We're trying to make their budget just stretch as absolutely far as possible.
20:31This saves the most money to keep the plumbing where it was.
20:34I know we usually try to put it with a window or in an island or something, but in this
20:39case,
20:39that window is their favorite spot to sit and watch Oscar and Heath, the bird and squirrel that live outside.
20:53Paint's going up on the walls in the front two rooms, but I have got to finalize color for the
20:58kitchen cabinet.
20:58So I'm bringing Mallory with me because she's got a great eye for design.
21:02This is the thing.
21:03We want to be as affordable as possible, but also give her as much design as we possibly can so
21:08we can be bold in the kitchen.
21:10So the cabinets are going to be a bold color.
21:12Yes.
21:12Typically, if I want a bold color, I'm going Valspar.
21:15This is a big opportunity.
21:16Yeah.
21:16I think she just wanted the house to feel bright and clean and a little more modern.
21:38So they have to dig up the old sidewalk.
21:43Then hopefully just get it really leveled up is our biggest problem.
21:46They've got to level up everything.
21:57Laramie and I are installing the laminate countertops.
22:06People have a lot of bad things to say about laminate only because we have since moved on to creating
22:12more expensive and luxurious countertop surfaces.
22:15But there's nothing wrong with laminate.
22:17When it's right for your budget, it's right for your kitchen, especially if it looks pretty.
22:23No, that looks good.
22:25Yeah.
22:25This is way, way better than the laminate countertops our mammals had in the 80s and 90s.
22:31Kay loves the look of stone that's this color, and she also loves butcher block.
22:37Both of those were a little out of budget.
22:38But I think I'm going to do a wood V-groove backsplash so she gets the natural wood she wanted
22:45in here.
22:46It looks so good, y'all.
22:47Can you talk to me about this room?
22:50Sure.
22:51Whatever this room is going to be called.
22:53Oh, come around.
22:54Oh, my gosh.
22:55I don't know what we call this room.
22:56It's the dining room.
22:57But Kay and Tocardo said they don't really need a proper dining room.
23:01They've used it as a lounge for date nights, a place that feels cool to hang out.
23:05We got cold air.
23:06Shut that door.
23:07It feels so good.
23:09This is the first time I've felt cold air in this house.
23:12First time anybody's felt cold air in this house.
23:14So good.
23:14Finally know exactly what I'm doing.
23:16I need a table for this room, but not like a dining table, a banquette table.
23:23So we're going dining room.
23:25But smaller than that.
23:26They never use this door.
23:28Into the hallway.
23:29So there will still be room to pass through.
23:32If they were to some reason start using this door.
23:35They could.
23:35The only thing they suggested was that they would use this room possibly for like date nights to make it
23:40feel like they're somewhere special.
23:43It's a lounge.
23:45Here's what I need.
23:46Here's what I'm thinking.
23:46You ready?
23:47We're going to have a bench here that's longer, a shorter bench here, the table here.
23:53We're going to put the light fixture over it.
23:55And then over here, I've ordered some bookcases that are prefab for right and left of the window.
24:01And then we'll have a settee in the middle in front of the window.
24:05What about over here?
24:06We can have a little space for a little storage or plants.
24:09She loves plants.
24:11Make this room like romantic and fun and playful.
24:14And also if they're going to host, they can wrestle in the front yard, but you have more seating.
24:19Mm-hmm.
24:20So we're calling this a dining lounge?
24:23Sure.
24:24Sure.
24:24I like that.
24:31Guess who's coming today?
24:33Bobby Joe.
24:34Did you see this before?
24:36Oh, yeah.
24:37So this was real thin and all broke up.
24:40We're going to get it fixed.
24:41Oh, yeah.
24:42Well, when we get all this done, this is going to be a wrestling yard.
24:45Sure enough.
24:46It's their favorite thing to do.
24:47You ever do any wrestling?
24:49Oh, no.
24:49I did do, but I enjoy it.
24:52Bobby Joe has a very specific Southern dialect that's a little bit hard for those outside
24:59of our area to understand, maybe.
25:02What would your wrestling nickname be if you was a wrestler?
25:05They used to call me the Junkyard Dog.
25:07But...
25:10I guess my wrestling name would just have to be Big Ben.
25:13Yeah.
25:17I would wear basically a one-piece swimsuit, but with the shorts, you know?
25:21One shoulder.
25:22Andre the Giant style.
25:24That's you.
25:27You know, people always compare me to Andre the Giant.
25:33Get a new walkway.
25:34And then when that's done, Hunter will come back and do the fresh landscaping.
25:37I just am ready to see some paint happen outside, and then we're going to be looking
25:40way better out here.
25:46What do you think?
25:46It looks great.
25:47Yeah.
25:47Yeah?
25:48Yeah.
25:48Yeah, that's great.
25:49This here is a Junkyard Dog, Aaron.
25:51Yeah, yeah.
25:52That's his wrestling name.
25:53That's what they used to call the Entail's there.
25:55Are you out of the game now?
25:57Yeah, yeah, yeah.
25:58Well, it looks great, y'all.
25:59We got stuff happening in the kitchen.
26:0919 and three quarters.
26:10Are you measuring?
26:11Yes, sir.
26:12We are working on a backsplash.
26:13I feel confident that I can do this myself.
26:25That is perfect!
26:29I feel like it's something.
26:30It's time for me to learn how to do a V-groove backsplash.
26:34Thank you!
26:36Aaron, are we going to paint these?
26:38No.
26:39This is the only, like, wood moment.
26:42We're going to give her natural wood backsplash.
26:45I think it'll look good if you do a light stain on all of it.
26:47A light stain.
26:55Yeah, they say that you are an expert at something when you have $10,000.
26:58hours of experience in it.
26:59But five minutes.
27:00It's so long.
27:01You're a quick learner.
27:02Real quick.
27:03Oh, thank you.
27:13Oh, my goodness.
27:15Locked furniture is closing after 109?
27:20Over 100 years.
27:21Yeah.
27:21Over 100 years.
27:22And this is, like, one of those...
27:24Our oldest business downtown.
27:26Hey!
27:27Hey, y'all.
27:27Welcome!
27:28Y'all been busy.
27:29We have.
27:30Oh, my word.
27:31Welcome to the estate sale.
27:33Yes.
27:33This is the end of an era.
27:35I know.
27:35It sure is.
27:37The rabbles are ready to retire.
27:38It makes sense.
27:39So they're having an estate sale.
27:41Y'all must have brought stuff in from, like, all the storage areas.
27:44Everywhere.
27:45Wow.
27:46There's so much good stuff.
27:48We're doing Kay and Ticardo's house.
27:50That is so exciting.
27:52Isn't that fun?
27:53There's still not a wedding date, though.
27:54Don't get excited.
27:55Well, it'll come.
27:56It'll come.
27:56They're going to get married sooner than later, I hope.
27:58And Ticardo would love if there were pieces from Lott.
28:01He would be so happy to have a piece of Lott, because he was here almost 15 years.
28:06These bentwood chairs, oh, my gosh.
28:07Those are really great.
28:08Aren't those so cute?
28:09Forty.
28:10And there's five of them.
28:11And they're in great condition.
28:12I want all of those.
28:15I think it is sad any time one of those heritage businesses closes in town.
28:21We all feel it a little bit.
28:23But also exciting, just because something new, something fresh is going to come.
28:27That's a good label.
28:27Isn't that good?
28:28I love that dollhouse.
28:30Always have.
28:31I feel like the girls have plenty, though.
28:33Yeah, they do.
28:39What is that?
28:42It looks like a gumball machine.
28:44Is it plastic or glass?
28:47Lucite?
28:50It's one of those old terrariums.
28:52Dang.
28:53Do you know what I'm talking about?
28:54Yeah, it's vented up here.
28:55Kay loves plants in the house.
28:56I actually think she might really like this.
28:59Is this crazy?
29:00It's pretty crazy, but it's really fun and unexpected.
29:03Her taste is a little more modern.
29:04I'm getting this.
29:05I mean, it's a little moreRED.
29:35Erin made me go up in the attic.
29:37I've been smelling them.
29:39Bat guano smells like mothball-ish.
29:42It's acrid.
29:43It's disgusting.
29:44Dang it.
29:46That's her back.
29:48Ah.
29:50Kay and Tocardo are coming home in one week.
29:52So we had to call Nathan back.
29:54So you saw the signal?
29:55Saw the bat signal, yeah.
29:57Saw it in the sky.
29:58I did take a look up there,
29:59and it looks to me that they have come back,
30:02and they are in the side of the screen up there in the gable vent.
30:06Hey, Batman returns.
30:08Yeah, I've been smelling them.
30:09Well, he just confirmed it, right?
30:10Yes, I did.
30:11Looks like what happened, the screen on the back side...
30:14We took your screen down.
30:16We needed to paint it and fix it, so we took it down,
30:18but we told them to put it on the inside.
30:20Yep.
30:21Once they've lived in this house for one time period,
30:23they'll come back.
30:24So those bats were able to get in to the actual attic again.
30:27Aw.
30:28So it'll be good to keep that screen on.
30:30So what happened is...
30:32It's our fault.
30:34How big of a gap can a bat get through?
30:38Usually about a pinky.
30:39They put the screen over the gable vent,
30:41but we had not yet scraped or painted.
30:43So we had the guys move the screen to the inside of the gable.
30:48Which created a perfect habitat for the bat attack.
30:53What we have to do is just screen the front side
30:55to where we can prevent them from going back into it,
30:58because if they get into that gable and hang on that screen,
31:01they'll just keep going back into the attic.
31:02Like, are we going to have bats forever?
31:04As long as we're able to get that front closed up
31:06and prevent them from actually going back in
31:09to the actual gable itself,
31:10then we'll be able to keep them out.
31:12Is this even possible in a week?
31:13Bats will come out within 24 to 48 hours
31:16after we put the valve up.
31:17I'll be so glad when they're gone.
31:19I hope that they're gone by then,
31:20and I hope that the smell is mostly gone
31:22if it's not totally gone.
31:24He's going to redo the bat valve.
31:27He's going to come back,
31:29and we're going to do a hardware cloth screen.
31:32He'll fit it inside our trim around the vent
31:37so that it doesn't stand out.
31:56See, Mom and Dad,
31:58that's why I got this art degree.
31:59Yeah.
32:21I am so excited for Kay and Tecardo to come home
32:24and see how fresh and cool their house is
32:29because it has air conditioning.
32:31And it smells nice because the bats are gone.
32:34I mean, it's like a different house for those two reasons,
32:36and you don't even take into account the way it looks.
32:39The lounge, dining room, date night spot,
32:43Kay needed storage in there.
32:44We gave that to her around the windows
32:46and in the benches and the banquette in the corner.
32:50It feels like it's a cute little cafe.
32:53It is a dining room, but it's also a sitting room.
32:56We've still got the little sitting spot
32:58in the window in the kitchen
33:00so Kay can observe Heath and Oscar,
33:03assuming they come back.
33:05This house was a study
33:06in how far you can stretch a budget.
33:09We used laminate countertops.
33:11We used roll-out vinyl flooring in the kitchen.
33:14When you can save money on those big things,
33:17then you can find ways to creatively
33:20make the house feel transformed.
33:23You know, Ben was really focused
33:24on making the daybed on the front porch
33:26something beautiful,
33:27something that will last,
33:28an heirloom,
33:29because that's where they always spend all their time.
33:31It is a work of art.
33:33Kay and Tecardo's entire relationship
33:34has been a very tumultuous time for them
33:38with their families,
33:39helping others instead of themselves.
33:41The house was always
33:43the very dead last priority for them.
33:46And so now,
33:47maybe this changes their priorities.
33:50Maybe they'll get married too.
33:51I don't know.
33:51We'll see.
33:52Maybe one day,
33:53this house will be the Jones-Williams house.
34:00What are you doing?
34:01I love it.
34:02I absolutely love it.
34:11That's crazy.
34:12He's leaving.
34:13Oh, my goodness.
34:15Oh, my goodness.
34:16It looks so good.
34:17Oh, my God.
34:20Oh, my goodness.
34:22I never saw this coming.
34:24You like it?
34:25I love it.
34:28Oh, my goodness.
34:30It looks flat.
34:30Like, you can see the whole house now.
34:32Yeah.
34:33Man, it looks good, though, for real.
34:34Oh, my goodness.
34:35We put a roof on the house.
34:37We re-screened the front porch.
34:39We added air conditioning.
34:42Y'all blocked the bats.
34:43Bats are out of here, baby.
34:45New screen in the gable.
34:46That should keep them out for good.
34:50I'm excited about the sidewalk
34:51and the doors.
34:53Yes.
34:54We got fresh paint on the brick
34:56and the skirting and the columns.
34:58It is beautiful.
34:58To save money where we could
34:59on the exterior.
35:00Man, it looks so good.
35:03I mean, I like the landscape
35:04and everything, man.
35:05It's crazy.
35:06Look at the yard.
35:07I know, right?
35:08The yard was kind of just disappearing.
35:10It looked like there had been an earthquake here.
35:12Tocardo, you can wrestle in the yard.
35:14With your brothers.
35:16Your brother, Corey, helped me in the wood shop
35:18with something, and he said every holiday get-together
35:21ends up turning into a wrestling match.
35:23I'm a little over-wrestling.
35:25He said.
35:26My knees are not made for that no more, no.
35:28He said.
35:29I might give him one match.
35:30I'm ready to see you.
35:31Really?
35:31Let's go.
35:32Let's go.
35:33Go for it.
35:39Oh, my goodness.
35:43This is gorgeous.
35:46You like it?
35:47I love it.
35:48It is.
35:51You had a day bed out here.
35:53This one is made with love.
35:56Your brother, Corey, helped me build this.
35:58This is what I learned about Corey.
36:01This is how I learned so much about your wrestling.
36:04So you're saying Corey put the pillows on the bed?
36:05No, no.
36:06He helped me build it.
36:08That's cool, though.
36:09That's cool.
36:09That is amazing.
36:10I love the wide armrests because they're like end tables.
36:13You can sit a plate on it.
36:15They're wide enough.
36:16It's Spanish cedar, so it will last forever out here
36:19covered like this.
36:20And you have screens.
36:21The bugs will stay out.
36:25Sunday, fun day.
36:26Sunday, fun day.
36:27Sunday, fun day.
36:28It's back.
36:29Beautiful.
36:29Yeah, but the inside is even better.
36:34Oh, my goodness.
36:37This is crazy.
36:38What do you think?
36:39No way.
36:40No way.
36:42Is this my house?
36:43Yes.
36:45Oh.
36:47This is crazy.
36:48This is crazy.
36:49Feels good in here.
36:49It's weird.
36:50I mean, this air conditioning is the best thing we did.
36:52Yeah, I've never felt it feel like this.
36:55It's so cool.
36:56It's not hot.
36:59You have new ceilings, fresh paint, new ceiling fan, uncover the fireplace, and that's it.
37:07You said this.
37:08This is amazing.
37:09Yeah.
37:10Like, it ain't nothing.
37:12That's it.
37:12Oh, there's way better.
37:14No, no.
37:15Oh, my goodness.
37:15The lounge.
37:16Date nights.
37:17Go see.
37:17The lounge.
37:18That's what we're calling it.
37:19The lounge room.
37:20The lounge.
37:20Yeah, because it's kind of a dining room.
37:23Oh.
37:28Oh.
37:29This is amazing.
37:30Okay.
37:31And you can invite family over for dinner, but it's also like a sitting room.
37:35But you really needed storage.
37:38Oh, my.
37:38Lots of storage over here, because I could tell you were struggling to find storage.
37:42These cabinets.
37:43Yeah.
37:44So, we did these bookcases beside the window.
37:47Oh.
37:47I know that.
37:48Okay.
37:48Who are those people?
37:55And then the banquette is all storage.
37:57You can lift that up and put things inside.
38:00Oh, okay.
38:00I love it.
38:02This table, Josh and I built it in the shop.
38:05This was Erin's idea.
38:06She kind of designed it.
38:07I just want it to be a really pretty little cafe table.
38:10It is cute, though.
38:11It didn't take up the whole room, so you could still use this door if you want to.
38:16It's still not technically a dining room.
38:18It's a lounge room.
38:19That's what I was going to say.
38:19It made the whole room look, like, bigger.
38:22Pictures from the fair.
38:23That's sweet.
38:23What's up with you and Ferris wheels?
38:25We love them.
38:26Well, that's kind of when we first started dating.
38:28The fair is in town this week, so we should go.
38:32Y'all should go.
38:33Yeah.
38:33This is my favorite.
38:34You like it?
38:35I love it.
38:36Can you tell me?
38:37You're like, nope, but I'll try.
38:39Okay.
38:39We found the terrarium at the lot closing sale.
38:42Felt like it was kind of like your vibe, your plant lady vibe.
38:46Yeah, I love plants.
38:46I love it.
38:47Yeah.
38:48And then we got these little chairs that I thought were so pretty.
38:51Yeah, I recognize them.
38:52Yeah.
38:53Awesome.
38:53For real.
38:55With the windows being open like this, nothing in front of them, you can sit here now and watch
39:00for Oscar and Heath.
39:01No.
39:01You didn't.
39:02Wait a minute.
39:03Oscar and Heath built their own houses while we were here.
39:06Isn't that amazing?
39:07They built it.
39:08Yeah.
39:09We scared them off, I think, because we haven't seen them.
39:12And so I thought if we get them cute little houses, maybe they'll come back.
39:15They'll come back.
39:16Which one's Oscar and which one's Heath?
39:18Show you when they come out.
39:19Oh, okay.
39:20Oscar's the squirrel.
39:21Yes.
39:21Heath is the bird.
39:23That's right.
39:23Okay.
39:24But you still have your spot.
39:26I'm excited.
39:27I'm excited.
39:29Oh!
39:35Wow.
39:37Yo!
39:39No.
39:43You see this?
39:45This is crazy.
39:46Yeah.
39:46A little better.
39:47This is crazy.
39:48A little better.
39:49What?
39:50Are you serious?
39:52Different!
39:53Yes!
39:54Way different.
39:55This area was about to just sink and fall.
39:59Hold up.
40:00No, no, no.
40:01This isn't our kitchen.
40:02No, it's not.
40:03No, it's not.
40:04This is so your kitchen.
40:05Look how wide open it is.
40:07They opened the whole kitchen.
40:08Cousin Tony came over and we took everything out and then rebuilt.
40:13We did have to take out the entire floor, all the joists, the subfloor, everything, because
40:18it had leaked from the sink for so long that it had spread everywhere.
40:22Cousin Tony.
40:23Cousin Tony.
40:24And he and I did the V-Group backsplash.
40:26He taught me his ways.
40:28You wanted teal kitchen cabinets.
40:30You wanted wood accents.
40:31You wanted some natural wood somewhere.
40:33But it never looked like this in my head.
40:36You've got laminate countertops, sheet vinyl floors.
40:39I feel like it achieves the look that you were kind of after.
40:44This is amazing.
40:46Is that a dishwasher?
40:47Yes, it is, Kay.
40:49That is your very own dishwasher.
40:51And it's small but mighty.
40:53This is crazy.
40:54It is.
40:54Carto can just sit here and talk to Oscar and Heath.
40:57Sure, sure.
40:58Instead of having to wash dishes.
40:59And here's your spot so when Kay is cooking, you can still hang in the kitchen.
41:05As nice as it feels inside, let's go sit on that front porch.
41:08Yeah.
41:09Wow, wow, wow.
41:14Are you so glad to be home?
41:16I am.
41:17Good.
41:17Y'all, it ain't a Sunday, but...
41:20It feels like fun.
41:21It feels nice.
41:21It feels like it.
41:22Please keep using your front porch, though.
41:24I am.
41:25Even though you have air conditioning.
41:26This is where we have Sunday fun day at.
41:28Yeah.
41:29You gave us $75,000 to work on this house, which is a tight budget.
41:34So we had to be smart about it.
41:35With a lot to do.
41:36It's real good.
41:37It's real good.
41:38Good.
41:39I love it.
41:40Good.
41:41I feel like this has been something that was just like the last priority on the back burner
41:45because everything and everyone else was your first priority.
41:49I hope that this can be a happy, fresh start.
41:52Oh, yes.
41:53One last thing.
41:55We have $13 left over.
41:58What's this about?
42:00Conveniently, the cost of a marriage license in Mississippi.
42:05That's how much it costs.
42:06That's right.
42:07That's right.
42:08Ricardo, don't go to the fair tonight and blow it on a corn dog.
42:12Blow it on the fair as well.
42:13I don't think we got enough for a corn dog with this.
42:21It's been four years.
42:24Our friend Michael McKinnon is an architect in town, and he's asked us to come back and finish this building.
42:29But we are coming back under very different circumstances.
42:34What happened was probably the worst thing I could have, you know, fathomed.
42:38We were seeing pictures of this building up in smoke.
42:42I mean, it was billowing out of this area that we had just finished.
42:47You know, part of me hopes it goes back to what it was.
42:50Do we feel super solid about this plan?
42:53Nope.
42:53That's what makes it a good one.
42:56Michael's taste is totally not my taste, but we can't just do English country houses every day.
43:02I need to call this building complete.
43:04y'all.
