00:01Spencer what can I say from day one I knew you were something special I had
00:06quite a journey to get to you countless bad bumble dates a wrong relationships
00:11and waterfalls of tears but it was worth every cringing second because it
00:17led me to you Spencer and Monique were some of the kindest and just most
00:24inviting people they just brought everyone together the wedding that they
00:29had at their house that was just a magic moment I knew that God was guiding me
00:34to my person and that when I met him it would be the most magical thing ever and
00:42boy is that an understatement their smiles were infectious in in the video
00:49and just throughout life you fast forward five years they have a four-year-old
00:54and a one-year-old and they're approaching you know the holidays and
00:59anyone that has kids knows that the holidays are very magical we did
01:05Christmas night together and then the following day we just did a post
01:10Christmas lounging and watching movies and had dinner and then the next morning
01:14they left everybody was in bright spirits and the kids are very excited I know the
01:19four-year-old and Spencer's mom went to the nutcracker together a couple days
01:23before everything just seemed totally normal
01:52Columbus police tech 107
01:54I guess I would like to ask for a wellness check on an individual at
02:01their home at 8 58 in the morning Spencer Tepe's colleague calls police to say he's late for work this
02:14is very unusual for him and they would like a welfare check police and 911 dispatchers receive welfare checks on
02:23a daily basis it's not very typical that somebody calls
02:27calls and says hey my co-worker is a couple of hours late for work I'm really concerned and I'd
02:33like a police officer to check on them
02:36I'm on vacation but this individual Spencer works with me and he did not show up to work this morning
02:42and we cannot get a hold of him or his family he is always on time and he would contact
02:45us if there is any issues whatsoever we're very very concerned because this is very out of character and we
02:51can't get in touch with his wife which is probably the more concerning thing
02:54calling 911
02:56calling 911 with that level of concern suggests that either it was so dramatically out of character for Spencer Tepe
03:02to notch over work or the people that were calling knew there was a reason to be scared
03:27we turn now to the urgent search for answers in the killings of a dentist and his wife found shot
03:34to death inside their home
03:35police are still searching for answers and they're asking anyone with information to contact them immediately
03:41this was a targeted attack
03:43we were totally blindsided by what happened what kind of person can take two parents away from such young children
03:53and just two beautiful people away from this earth
04:03I haven't watched this in a while
04:05dear Momo I feel so lucky to be up here with you today you've grown to become my best friend
04:12and together we're surrounded by friends and family who are fortunate to be able to say the same
04:19I think they actually met online but I do remember them telling a story about a restaurant or a bar
04:28and they just talked forever it almost seemed like love at first sight for both of them
04:33bright warm welcoming constantly smiling just joyous I finally found my lobster and it honestly couldn't be a person with
04:44a more beautiful heart
04:45um I will love you forever and I'm so lucky to be Mrs. Tepe
04:49the lobster line comes from one of her favorite TV shows friends
04:55see he's her lobster
04:58Spencer was her lobster and and she was his as well
05:03all I can say is this Spencer you know as far as I'm concerned she can be an 80 year
05:09old lady walking down the streets and I'll just be yelling that's my baby
05:13Monique's father officiated their wedding and I think it meant a lot
05:19they were all about bringing family and community and friends and you didn't have to be blood to be family
05:25everybody seems to love them they've got great careers a great family
05:29she worked at a daycare she got her masters in early childhood education and later became a stay at home
05:35mother
05:36Spencer was a well respected dentist known for putting long hours into his practice
05:40I think maybe he wanted to be a doctor first but he was always very particular about his teeth and
05:46would brush his teeth twice a day and after meals
05:49so it's no surprise that that's where his path led him
05:52Spencer even volunteered at the Big Brothers Big Sisters and even appeared in some of their promo videos
05:58I've just tried to remain a role model as best as I can
06:03and demonstrate the importance of an education
06:07and just really kind of encourage him to pursue more and to do more
06:13they were partners and they were a real team and work together and that's not something you see every day
06:20I now pronounce you husband and wife
06:24give me kiss the bride
06:26and then all of a sudden all of that comes crashing down in probably the worst way that it could
06:38be a bad
06:39come here
06:39what's going on there
06:40um there's
06:41our
06:42our
06:42friend wasn't
06:45answering his phone
06:46he just came here
06:47um
06:48he appears dead
06:51there's blood
06:53he's laying next to his bed
06:55off of his bed
06:55there's blood
07:00I remember I was driving down the street
07:02and i saw all the cars all the police cars and then a neighbor called me and said this family
07:10it was a dentist and his wife were found murdered in their home and when they said there were
07:15children in the house i thought oh those poor babies what could have possibly happened what
07:21could have happened this blood he's laying next to his bed off of his bed in this blood
07:27i can't get closer to see more than that okay they can tell he's obviously not breathing
07:32or anything yeah yeah is it like how to like like cuddle like you know because it looks like
07:38it doesn't cut all the good i can't look
07:42their bedroom was upstairs and i can confirm that monique and spencer teppi were found inside of
07:49their bedroom both spencer and monique teppi died from multiple gunshot wounds the autopsy show the
07:55teppis were shot a total of 16 times with monique being shot nine times and spencer being shot seven
08:02times including gunshots to the head and the chest it really screams just unbelievable fury this is a
08:11home that was once so beautiful full of love this is the home that the teppis got married in and
08:16now
08:17it's a crime scene and the whole community of columbus ohio is wondering what's going on you have a crime
08:24that's horrific with no indication of who might have done it and it leaves everyone scared my wife
08:32maddie spencer's younger sister got the call at about 11 a.m and she told me in that night before
08:39she
08:39woke up with just a terrible pain in her stomach and then as soon as we got that call and
08:44she had the
08:45same exact pain i was putting christmas decorations away madeline called and i declined it because i
08:53i just thought i would finish the project about 10 minutes later my mom walked through the door
09:00and pulled me into the room and into my bedroom and said you know i i just i have terrible
09:07news i have
09:08terrible news that's when the nightmare started initially law enforcement gave a range of between
09:162 to 5 a.m but then later when we saw the probable cause affidavit it narrowed it down very
09:21specifically
09:22to 3 52 a.m which makes me wonder what digital evidence do they have that let them narrow down
09:28that
09:28time and we were all concerned for those kids you know wondering if they saw anything if they heard
09:36anything and how that may affect them the teppi children were in the home they were unharmed the
09:44children i'm taken into custody by the parents of monique and spencer teppi and larry the dog
09:50the golden doodle is with madeline a spence's sister
09:58this case has had the most media attention of any case i've seen in my time here
10:03i've been covering courts and crime for the dispatch since 2018. this is obviously a story that
10:10catches the attention as soon as you hear even the littlest bit about it
10:14so we are coming down where the teppis lived and still see bouquets and flowers that people have left
10:29for them
10:29when i first moved here it had a very bad reputation there was a lot of gang activity
10:35there was violence around 2010 things started to change that's when the project of revitalization of
10:44properties began and we knew that the families and the people that would purchase them would be good
10:49people good neighbors the kind of people you want to have in your community so monique and spence
10:56moved into this lovely new construction home they were looking forward to growing a family
11:03not only was it the holidays but it was so close to their wedding anniversary
11:09christmas had come and gone and everybody was still full of cheer
11:13and we're now looking forward to new year's eve then the news came devastating mystery coming out
11:21of columbus ohio somehow an ordinary welfare check turned into something so tragic information is still
11:28developing in this case so make sure to drop a follow for more this case got a lot of clicks
11:34on
11:35social media it is such a mystery people want to try to make sense of it and because nobody can
11:43immediately say okay here's what happened it leaves this open space for people to speculate it always
11:50ends up being one of two things it's either a robbery gone wrong or something right or there's something
11:57some hidden ghost hiding in plain sight there were rumors that neighbors might have seen somebody
12:04strange lurking around the property earlier in the month now there doesn't appear to have been any
12:10action taken by the neighbors to report it to police or to put it on the official record anywhere and
12:17look
12:17it might not necessarily be too unusual for a stranger maybe to have gotten lost and wind up
12:23on their property when you have two people deceased in a home especially a married couple the first thought
12:30is going to be murder suicide but there's no firearm and the fact that there's no gun found at the
12:36house
12:36means that it could not have been a murder suicide they were hunting for an assailant a killer who had
12:42come into the home and killed both of them
12:50when detectives are looking at a case they have to make a determination is there anything in the person's
12:56in the past they talk to family they talk to friends they try to determine if there was any type
13:01of
13:01situation that could have led someone to want to harm in this case monique and spencer when police
13:08dug into monique's personal history it's not hard to find that she had been married previously monique had
13:15been married in 2015 to michael mckee a surgeon michael mckee was sort of the prototypical popular high
13:20school kid he was a national merit scholar one of the top-ranked people in his class he was an
13:25all-state
13:25football player and then he went to ohio state university monique and michael both went to
13:30ohio state university for undergrad michael went to medical school while monique pursued her graduate
13:36degree monique and michael get married they buy a house in roanoke virginia which is where michael
13:42is completing his residency to become a vascular surgeon by all accounts he's the kind of guy that
13:48you probably want to date but the marriage didn't last long by 2017 they're divorced after only two years
13:54marriage in looking at the divorce papers the most remarkable thing is it's not remarkable this is a
14:00very simple divorce no shared assets no children both having separate properties they are not
14:08compatible and that's it you see that monique requests that she gets the ring because monique
14:14says that she pays both for her engagement ring and wedding ring to the tune of six thousand dollars
14:19by 2020 both michael mckee and monique seem to have moved on monique has been remarried by that
14:28point married to spencer tepe living in columbus michael has finished his residency and he's in
14:35maryland doing a fellowship moving on with his career as well there's a double murder suspect on the
14:42loose in columbus columbus ohio is currently shook right now as we speak while we all try to figure out
14:49this mystery of what happened to a dentist and his stay-at-home wife it's like wow what's happening
14:57in the neighborhood you know we all made sure our doors were locked double locked checked all the
15:02windows the police were being incredibly tight-lipped now out of the blue as the days progressed the police
15:11police release the smallest piece of evidence they just released new footage from a nest camera
15:19police for the first time release an image that they believe shows the person of interest walking
15:26in this alleyway and he gets down to the tepi's home just a few houses away this is the tepi's
15:34home
15:35this is their detached garage how did the killer actually go ahead and access the home did the
15:42killer come in and go over the fence here that video was shot by this nest camera located on this
15:49house just a few doors away from the tepi's home after 10 days law enforcement announced on january 10th
15:56that they have a suspect in custody but it seems like there are more twists and turns in this tragic
16:02story than we once believed tonight a stunning new development police now say a lengthy investigation
16:08led them to their suspect over 400 miles away the ex-husband and surgeon from chicago is now facing
16:15two counts of murder ending a 10-day manhunt we have the suspect's vehicle on neighborhood video
16:20surveillance arriving just before the murders and leaving shortly after detectives were able to link
16:26this vehicle to mckee it's the ex-husband dr michael mckee they're divorced eight years ago it doesn't
16:33make any sense what could possibly be the motive here you have michael mckee who's a vascular surgeon
16:39working at a hospital in rockford illinois living in this penthouse high-rise in chicago allegedly
16:46driving all the way to ohio to commit these murders mr mckee was arrested in rockford illinois without
16:54incident an atf found him at chick-fil-a right by the hospital where he was working had their guns
17:01drawn and on him and yelling at him to get down did he have patience that day and then get
17:06arrested at
17:06breakfast at chick-fil-a because he was arrested at nine o'clock in the morning when we found out
17:11that
17:12michael mckee was arrested it didn't give me the relief that i thought it would because it's he's still
17:21took something that we'll never be able to get back but he was arrested and in a jail in illinois
17:27for 10 days before he was extradited to ohio you can see here michael mckee being escorted by deputies
17:33at the franklin county jail he's in plain clothes about to be booked on murder charges he's patted down
17:39and searched ending up in justice t-shirt and boxer shorts next to him is a blue bag that appears
17:46to have
17:46whatever belongings he had at the time of his arrest the video of michael mckee shows how emotionless and
17:55almost robotic he seems going from a professional career in a penthouse apartment to a body and cavity
18:02search is not what anybody wants to do police say in court papers that mckee had left his cell phone
18:11at the hospital where he worked for 17 hours enough time to allow him to drive from illinois commit the
18:18murders and then drive back i think of surgeons as generally smart people and yet here we are
18:27i was shocked that he was arrested for murder
18:32i've been a resident of the pierre since 1984 and two floors above me is michael mckee i saw police
18:43officers there with her badges and everything taking clothing and stuff out and putting them in boxes
18:52he moved in in July of last year he was always by himself he was a pleasant person
19:00geraldine even says that she ran into mckee at their building a few days after the killings of
19:06monique and spencer and everything seemed perfectly normal i remember seeing him after new year's leaving
19:12for work in the morning he came through the lobby and he went into the garage to get his car
19:18mckee is just going about his daily routine it's perfectly possible that he's reading headlines
19:23or maybe he's watching television news new video tonight of a person of interest in the killings of
19:28a dentist and his wife and seeing the stories that end up actually being about him i never knew michael's
19:36name until probably the tuesday that it happened but myself and many others were well aware of
19:43the abuse that he put her through the torment that he put her through you can see all sorts
19:50of accusations about what goes on inside a relationship inside a marriage
19:55but you don't usually read bombshell accusations that investigators revealed they said that monique had
20:03told friends he had been abusive and had made numerous threats on her life during and after her
20:10marriage had forced unwanted sex on her and had strangled her another witness told detectives that
20:18michael mckee had told monique that he could kill her at any time and would find her and buy the
20:24house
20:24right next to her and that she would always be his wife
20:31those are the classic indicators of a domestic abuser that person needs control they're angry and it seems
20:41that she was the victim of some domestic violence you don't want to believe what you're hearing because
20:49it's it's very uncomfortable to live with
20:56she only really told those closest to her and so that's why when this murder happened these family
21:01members immediately went to police and said we think we know who could have done this we think we know
21:04who the suspect is one of monique's closest friends told local affiliate wbns that monique confided in
21:10her and told her about the abuse at the hands of michael she said my ex she said it was
21:16he was bad she
21:17said abusive very verbally mentally abusive she was psychologically damaged and she was working on it
21:25all the time but she was also very open about it which i i truly appreciated about her before her
21:31ex
21:31husband allegedly murdered monique tepe and her new husband police say he threatened and stalked her
21:37turns out the police don't believe that the 30th was the first time michael mckee had been at the tepe
21:43residence they think it was him at the residence december 6th seemingly casing the residence spencer
21:51monique are not home because they're at the big 10 championship game they're watching a game where 18
21:57million others are tuning in to fox and they'll hand it off hit me and that should take us to
22:05the end
22:05of the first half so it's this really exciting weekend for them and suddenly out of nowhere
22:11monique says she has to go and no one knows why she just leaves the game friends tell investigators
22:16that spencer later told them that monique had to leave because she was upset about something with
22:19her ex-husband what police are saying is not only was the double murder premeditated they're saying that
22:28he had planned it he had cased it it was him on december 6th it's him when they're killed
22:41we can also say that multiple weapons were taken from the property of mckee and there is a preliminary
22:50link to one of the weapons that ties it to the homicides
22:57one of the ways that firearms experts do this ballistics testing is they take the firearm they
23:02load it and they fire it into something that's in water and they do it because they want to catch
23:07the bullet that comes out of the gun and they want to then look at that bullet compare it to
23:12the bullet
23:13that's found at the scene to see if there's a match where we can see all those little scratches
23:18these are those breech face marks these lines across the back of the cartridge we can see that
23:24dent that i talked about that firing pin impression and we can basically line those up and see one
23:30continual scratch that goes from cartridge case a to cartridge case b and we see that agreement
23:37continuing all the way down so we know that these two cartridges were fired in the same gun
23:44so it really is like a fingerprint the evidence that links an offender to the crime scene
23:51is the backbone of a conviction within the grand jury indictment michael mckee used a suppressor
23:57or silencer in these alleged murders you can think of a silencer as a long tube of metal that gets
24:04attached to the end of a firearm that helps to lessen the sound that a shot makes it also helps
24:12to lessen the
24:13amount of gunshot residue that's available in the scene this is kind of a hollywood thing
24:22it's a you know an assassin on tv type of thing in reality they're very uncommon they're uncommon
24:30to own they're illegal in some places they're not something that you can easily purchase
24:35this suppressor or silencer could be a key piece of evidence in helping to identify which murder weapon
24:41was used to allegedly kill both monique and spencer
24:55today we had the arraignment for michael mckee can you hear us out there at the new jail yeah we
25:00got
25:00you mckee appeared via closed circuit tv from the jail he didn't say anything didn't really have any
25:07expression on his face didn't have any sort of reaction your honor with respect to the allegations
25:12we would acknowledge receipt waive reading enter not guilty please to all counts contained therein
25:17police believe that this is a complete open and shut case that they absolutely have him dead to rights
25:23certainly he could be not guilty we have no idea what his defense would be what his explanation could be
25:31could it be that somebody framed him could it be that there somehow he was insane at the time
25:38if i was michael mckee's defense attorney i'd be looking at all the small issues that i can poke holes
25:43into to raise reasonable doubt did law enforcement do everything correct were those warrants properly
25:49obtained and were they properly executed by law enforcement this is you know something that we're all
25:56going to have to figure out how to get through it together and take it day by day they brought
26:02such
26:03light to so many people we're going to try to instill mo and spence into the kids as much as
26:09possible
26:12you think that you just took two lives but you took so much more than that you took
26:21a daughter and a son a brother and a sister cousins nieces nephews aunts uncles friends and obviously
26:34two amazing parents two just innocent innocent children who will never know them again
26:53so
27:11you
27:20You
