00:00Good morning.
00:01This is another day of making our favorite small town better.
00:04Erin, we got to go, babe.
00:06Go pick some old sad houses.
00:08Ben, let's go.
00:09Growing up, I didn't see what was so special about Laurel.
00:12So every day, we make sure our girls see it.
00:14Good morning, Katie.
00:16Can you believe we fixed up over 100 houses in Laurel?
00:18There's so much opportunity, so many unloved houses.
00:22I don't know what is going to go wrong in here today.
00:25I'm sure something.
00:27Girl, the bat just flew through here.
00:29That's not good.
00:31No way.
00:32We're about to see the house for the first time.
00:34This is the best part.
00:35Oh, my God.
00:37Holy cow.
00:38Are you serious right now?
00:40Ben, did you make this?
00:41Yeah, I made this.
00:42The real truth of living and working in your hometown
00:45is that you're going to see these people everywhere forever.
00:48It's your superpower, Erin.
00:50Color is her superpower.
00:51It is.
00:51It is perfect.
00:53Every day is different when you're
00:55renovating houses in Laurel, Mississippi.
01:04Good morning.
01:05Good morning.
01:06Good morning.
01:07We're headed to the maternity ward, y'all.
01:10Bye.
01:10Here we go.
01:11Are y'all ready for this?
01:12Yes.
01:12Next stop.
01:14Let's go to number two.
01:15Labor and delivery.
01:20To renovate it.
01:22Chill.
01:24We're going to renovate a hospital.
01:26Just a little bit of one, though.
01:27Our favorite part of the hospital is getting done.
01:30Are y'all ready to go to the maternity ward?
01:32Yes.
01:32This is a dream for South Central.
01:34This is a dream for us.
01:37We've spent a lot of time here in this hospital.
01:40A community hospital like South Central
01:42is a small town within a small town.
01:45Yeah.
01:46It's really more than a hospital
01:48when you're from a small community like ours.
01:50I love South Central.
01:52We had all our babies there.
01:52They were amazing.
01:53They are improving, like, left and right.
01:56So, Jessie and Lauren had their baby last week.
01:58Yeah.
01:59But while we were there visiting Bonnie,
02:02Allie Eaton came in and said that they wanted to do it.
02:05She is so sweet.
02:05I love her.
02:06Yeah.
02:06And she said the board had talked
02:08and they were interested in having us renovate
02:11a few model rooms in maternal child at the hospital.
02:14I have thoughts.
02:15I have so many thoughts.
02:17That would be awesome.
02:17I would talk long-term stays.
02:18The nursing staff was just incredible.
02:20Like, I could cry thinking about it.
02:21I'm still friends with them.
02:22Yeah.
02:23And, like, they messaged me.
02:24I'm really excited about it
02:25because the last time it was updated was 2,000.
02:28Dang.
02:30This hospital is just really special.
02:32It's special for so many reasons.
02:34My dad was a department head here
02:36at South Central Regional Medical Center for 44 years.
02:40So, this is your home.
02:41I'm extremely invested in the success of this hospital.
02:43Well, we cannot thank you enough.
02:45Well, you called the right people.
02:47We are so excited.
02:50In the same way that we want to see Laurel thrive
02:53and be beautiful and healthy,
02:56we want the same thing for our community hospital.
02:59Well, here we are.
03:00Here's the maternity ward.
03:02Renovating this hospital is literally an extension
03:06of what we're already doing with homes all over Laurel.
03:09Good morning.
03:10Good morning.
03:11How are you?
03:11We're good. How are you?
03:12Or do I have to call you Dr. Winstead?
03:13No, not at all.
03:14This is Nurse Anna Goodwin.
03:16Okay.
03:16Nice to meet you guys.
03:17Good to meet you.
03:18The maternity ward has three departments.
03:21There's labor and delivery and postpartum and pediatrics.
03:24There's 30 rooms total.
03:26And we're just going to renovate one room from each department
03:29so they'll have a prototype for renovating all of them later.
03:33We just want to make it feel like a five-star hotel for our patients.
03:37We have $150,000 raised by our healthcare foundation,
03:41and we want to duplicate the rooms that y'all design
03:44throughout the whole entire department.
03:46Awesome.
03:46Where are we starting?
03:48So we will start in labor and delivery.
03:51Currently, if we walk into a very modern level of care
03:54and we get a somewhat dated appearance,
03:56it's the first impression a lot of people have of the hospital.
03:59I mean, it was last updated 24 years ago, so the colors are...
04:05I'm not super familiar with this one.
04:07We had two C-sections.
04:09So you don't come to this room.
04:11Right.
04:11What happens in here?
04:13So this is a laboring room.
04:14So a mom who is here maybe for an induction
04:17or just comes in and labor would be in here.
04:19Okay.
04:20So family's in and out.
04:21There's got to be a comfortable space for family.
04:24You can tell that there's some stuff going down in this room.
04:28Listen, fluids are a thing.
04:30I know this.
04:31They do be happening.
04:32They do be happening.
04:33They do be happening.
04:34So...
04:34Which is why you have welded vinyl floors,
04:36which would have to...
04:38Well, you would have to come back in with new welded vinyl flooring.
04:41Right.
04:41What do you wish was better?
04:43I wish it looked different.
04:45Very dated.
04:45So this, I'm pretty sure, is where Lucy was born.
04:49Tell me if this is the truth.
04:50Mallory believes that Lucy got bathed in that pedestal sink.
04:56I would confirm that.
04:57I think Anna could give better.
04:58She did.
04:58No, she did not.
05:00If babies are born in this room, they get bathed in that sink.
05:04I just think you could do better.
05:06Here's what I'm saying if I'm a patient here.
05:08We get rid of all this busyness.
05:10Yeah.
05:10All this texture on the walls, get rid of the border, get rid of the curtains.
05:14And instead, we come in with, I would love to do a crown molding tray around the room
05:20and hide some warm ambient lighting that would just make the room kind of glow.
05:25It would make you feel peaceful.
05:27And then on this wall behind the bed, built-ins.
05:30You could have storage, some sconce lighting too.
05:33Lighting changes everything as far as how you feel.
05:36When these fluorescent lights are off, it should feel comforting.
05:40Cozy.
05:40Cozy.
05:41And what if you came in with a new welded vinyl floor that's hospital grade?
05:45That gives the warmth of a wood floor color-wise.
05:48Yep.
05:48You could have a built-in vanity and room underneath for a wheelchair or a chair.
05:52A much better sink and setup for washing a baby.
05:57Some counter space.
05:58Some counter space.
06:00New lighting there that feels warm and glowy.
06:03If you got the TV mounted on the wall, that would help enormously.
06:06And if this instead was a very low-profile console of some sort, more comfortable seating.
06:13Yeah.
06:13And everything has to be wipeable.
06:16Sterile, but with warmth.
06:18Right.
06:18Sterile is a word I want to hear in a hospital setting.
06:23Hey, hey, are y'all ready to go to postpartum?
06:26Yes.
06:27Let's go.
06:27Okay.
06:28Let's go.
06:28Oh, sweet.
06:30I'm really familiar with this hospital.
06:33When we were in college, I was a pharmacy tech here in the hospital.
06:37Hey, guys.
06:38This is Dr. Rachel Cudworth and Nurse Shania.
06:41When we were dating, I got the job in the transport department for the physical therapy department.
06:48Postpartum room.
06:49Here we are.
06:50Home sweet home.
06:51And we would meet up and have breakfast and lunch together in the cafeteria.
06:56And make out in the elevator.
06:57A little bit, sometimes.
06:59Thank you, ma'am.
07:00Yes.
07:00I will come back and get y'all seen.
07:02Very well.
07:02Ugh.
07:03If these walls could talk.
07:05If these walls could talk.
07:05Yes.
07:06Absolutely.
07:07It's probably strange to have emotional attachment to a hospital room, but I've been in here for surgery twice.
07:12Babies twice.
07:15In 2014, I laid in that bed and took a photo of this direction, and I swear it looks identical.
07:22Oh, wow.
07:23Nothing has changed.
07:24I also want to say I had a wonderful experience.
07:28Yeah, we did.
07:28Every time I've ever been here.
07:30I mean, you even slept a time or two.
07:32Right.
07:33Overall, the space is really, it's a great size for a postpartum room.
07:37It allows for a lot of family members.
07:39It still allows the nurses to do what they need to do functionally.
07:43Okay.
07:43Aesthetically, it could use a little help.
07:45I love that we have a little dinette set here.
07:48We have brought food.
07:49Yes.
07:49Visited and eaten at that table when we had family here.
07:52Yeah.
07:52We have a picture of our first date as mom and dad.
07:55On that couch.
07:56We were sitting here.
07:56Yeah.
07:57I mean, this room is only for rest and recovery.
08:00If you can make this room feel like home, I would do that starting on this wall, getting
08:08rid of the border, the busy textured walls, then coming in with beautiful real wood built-ins
08:14that go around the bed.
08:16I think painting these a color that's soothing, maybe like a eucalyptus green with sconce lighting
08:22built into that.
08:23And then wallpaper that looks like grass cloth, something warm but neutral that feels luxury.
08:28New blinds like a Roman shade would be pretty to roll up there.
08:33Instead of this big bulky armoire, have a flat screen TV mounted on the wall.
08:37And you could have a console that might have a mini fridge in it because that would be
08:41so great for the family that's visiting.
08:44Yes.
08:44New, more comfortable furniture.
08:46And then this flooring, if we came in with a new LVT that looks like wood also, but something
08:51a little lighter.
08:52It just would make the whole room feel brightened, warm, fresh, and still very durable.
09:00And then here, this dinette is really great.
09:03But when I was here as a patient, what I wished for was some counter space to sit a cosmetic
09:09bag.
09:09Absolutely.
09:09You do not feel your most beautiful.
09:12And if you could stand in front of a mirror and at least have good lighting that makes
09:15you feel good.
09:16Kind of boosts your confidence a little bit.
09:18It does.
09:19It made me feel like a new person.
09:21Right.
09:21Yep.
09:21Can we look in the bathroom?
09:23Oh, yeah.
09:23The tile has been updated in the shower.
09:25Yes.
09:26It's new.
09:27I think we can work with it.
09:28Yeah.
09:28Yeah.
09:29New flooring would be great.
09:31Yes.
09:31And here, new tile.
09:32I was going to say flooring.
09:33New wallpaper.
09:34New lighting.
09:36New vanity.
09:37Replace the cabinet with a new one.
09:40Hey.
09:41Hey.
09:41What's up?
09:42Hey.
09:43Pediatrics?
09:44Yeah.
09:44All right.
09:45Let's go.
09:45All right.
09:46Can I, this is stupid.
09:48Can I do one thing before we leave?
09:50What is it?
09:52Like, I can't believe I'm crying about this.
09:56Um, every time I've ever stayed in this room, I took a picture from the bed of this wall.
10:01This ugly wall.
10:03Can I get one more picture like that?
10:06Before this is all gone?
10:07Yes.
10:07Okay.
10:08Yes.
10:08The last one.
10:09I have nothing but happy memories here.
10:11This is so silly.
10:13Okay.
10:14We'll see you all later.
10:16I don't cry for everything.
10:19Okay.
10:20You want me to sit?
10:21Yes.
10:22Oh, the last one ever.
10:24This is amazing.
10:29We can go now, huh?
10:30Let's go.
10:34Pediatrics.
10:35Here we go.
10:36Okay.
10:36So it's very similar to postpartum.
10:38Yes.
10:38Yes.
10:39Small.
10:39Yes.
10:40Real compact, isn't it?
10:42Yes.
10:43What is the average age of a patient that'll stay in this room?
10:47Two.
10:48Most true.
10:48Two?
10:49Give or take.
10:49Yeah.
10:50Two.
10:50We have lots of infants.
10:51Mm-hmm.
10:52What is not working in here for your patients and for the medical staff, for the parents?
10:58I wish it was more kid friendly.
11:00Like, it's just very boring in here.
11:03Outdated, obviously.
11:04Very adult.
11:05My house looks like this, so I don't know about dating.
11:10How long have you been a pediatrician?
11:12A long time.
11:1428 years.
11:1628 years.
11:17Yeah.
11:17Yeah.
11:17All right.
11:17Well, here's just my assessment.
11:19As a parent, if my child were in here, I think I would start by changing the color.
11:24The color changes how we feel about the room, I think.
11:26You get rid of all this dark color, the wall coverings.
11:31And I would like to see a wallpaper that feels quietly playful.
11:36Hmm.
11:36Not so adult.
11:37Not too much.
11:38And then, have you seen these digital screens?
11:43Digital windows.
11:43It's like a digital window into a sunny sky.
11:47Oh, so they feel like they're looking at the sky.
11:49Yeah.
11:49Oh.
11:50That you could dim or turn off if you want, but that would be amazing.
11:54We're doing, like, drawing blood or...
11:56Yeah.
11:57It's a distraction.
11:58Yeah.
11:59Get their imaginations going.
12:00Yeah.
12:01Make them feel better.
12:02Anything in here to make it feel more playful, less intimidating.
12:07Yeah.
12:07That would be amazing.
12:09Yeah.
12:10Hello.
12:10I'm back.
12:11All right.
12:11Hello.
12:12Welcome back.
12:13We've got lots of points.
12:14We're so excited.
12:15Thank you all so much.
12:16You've been a great tour guide today.
12:18Can you believe we get to work at the hospital again?
12:21Bye, gang.
12:23See you all later.
12:24Bye.
12:26Right back where we started.
12:27Yeah.
12:30Don't you think...
12:33We don't work here anyway.
12:35I'm kidding you.
12:35I do work here.
12:36They're getting us badges.
12:39We've definitely never renovated a hospital before.
12:42But it's time.
12:44I feel like we've done bigger projects, but...
12:46We've definitely done projects with a larger scale.
12:50But this is...
12:51Extremely unique.
12:52Extremely unique.
12:53And maybe the most important one we've done for the community.
13:06You're ready for surgery, Dr. Napier?
13:08I'm not a doctor, but I do play one on TV.
13:11Hello.
13:11What in the world?
13:13I missed a memo on this.
13:15Nobody told Chris about the scrubs.
13:18You got something going on.
13:21In all seriousness, this is very different from any other renovation that we've done,
13:24because there are major protocols that have to be followed.
13:27So the biggest thing is dust prevention.
13:31So that is a negative pressure machine, so it keeps all that dust inside of here,
13:35and so it's not going to our patient care area.
13:38Love that.
13:39Dang.
13:39Here we go.
13:43We will not make a mess.
13:45We will be neat.
13:46We've got to get this patient to surgery stacked.
13:50And we will follow visiting hours.
13:53Yeah.
13:54We are only allowed to work between 8 and 5, which is fine with me.
13:57Just fine.
13:58Is it a good pull?
13:59It is.
14:00The whole baseboard's even coming off.
14:02Well, dang.
14:04This is so satisfying.
14:07That's the best I've ever felt.
14:09Wow!
14:10I feel like we've covered our bases.
14:11I mean, we did get a lot of input from physicians and nurses and patients.
14:16Everybody's excited about it.
14:18No one is more excited about it than we are.
14:20It's true.
14:24There's another baby!
14:27Somebody was just born!
14:29There's a new baby.
14:32What's that tune?
14:33It's twinkle, twinkle, little star.
14:35That means a daddy just pressed the button.
14:45And now, we keep demoing.
14:47Yeah, we'll be done by the end of the day.
14:49We could start back building really quickly.
14:52These days.
14:53Living with men.
14:55These days.
14:56Living with men.
14:58Always.
15:00Always.
15:02These days.
15:03Sunshine.
15:05Light it up.
15:07So today, we are installing the built-ins behind the bed.
15:12And it'll feel like residential is the goal.
15:15Yeah.
15:15But like a closet and storage for guests' bags and clothes.
15:20It's starting to feel like something.
15:22This is really, really exciting.
15:24Yeah.
15:25Okay.
15:26And this goes all the way to the corner, right?
15:29Yep.
15:29That's going to be so much better, having counter space.
15:33Soon, we get to start wallpaper.
15:34And flooring.
15:35And lighting.
15:37And towel in the bathroom.
15:39Oh, wait.
15:40I didn't tell you this in the hall.
15:42Janie's pregnant.
15:43Oh, my God!
15:44I know!
15:45I know!
15:46And then she's going to be in this room.
15:48Woo!
15:49Katie's sister, Janie, she's pregnant.
15:51And she's going to have a baby here.
15:52What?
15:53And she's going to get to use the room.
15:55I mean, right now...
15:55The room feels kind of like a disaster right now.
15:58Honestly.
15:58It looks horrible.
15:59Absolutely horrible.
16:00From the old...
16:01Hey!
16:02Hey, Dr. Lad!
16:04What's up?
16:04How you been?
16:05Do y'all remember?
16:06This is Dr. Seth Ladd.
16:07I was like, what are you doing?
16:08From such TV shows as HGTV's hometown.
16:10We're telling them.
16:11It's like a little nod back to the blues we had in here before.
16:15It looks great.
16:15It was a good scene, y'all.
16:16Yeah.
16:16You did.
16:17Take care.
16:20Mallory texted me and said, meet me in the waiting room.
16:23I just wish we could do something to make this space
16:26even more welcoming and exciting.
16:29Do you have any money left?
16:37All right.
16:38You got a blank canvas here.
16:40Finally.
16:41Pretty blank.
16:42Yeah.
16:43It's going to be our towel room.
16:44So today, I'm working with Matt, because he specializes in institutional flooring like
16:49in hospitals.
16:50We got this nice, lovely 12 by 24 towel.
16:54Easy to clean.
16:55Everybody stay calm.
16:57David is fine.
16:59This is not David's specialty, though.
17:02Very easy to clean.
17:03I want the thinnest grout lines possible.
17:05We can achieve that.
17:06Okay.
17:07So it's a little different than a house where sometimes, you know, form is considered over
17:11function.
17:11Here, function is definitely number one.
17:14This is a large format porcelain.
17:16Mm-hmm.
17:17Why porcelain is important is it's almost zero water absorption.
17:22Love that.
17:23And your grout will be sealed.
17:25So this will be almost as good as having a continuous floor.
17:39So we're welding floors and L and D.
17:43It can be completely scrubbed clean of any bacterial matter.
17:48Hmm.
17:50When you say bacterial matter, do you mean bodily fluids?
17:53That's what I'm talking about.
17:54I'm trying to find new ways, new words and new ways.
17:57I think bodily fluids says it all.
17:59It does.
17:59It says a little too much.
18:01It's all inside of us.
18:02Sometimes it's outside.
18:04Listen, I just kind of wanted to watch.
18:08And next thing you know, I'm welding floors.
18:23Did you get those photos?
18:25Oh my gosh!
18:26I know!
18:27Mallory texted me and said, meet me in the waiting room.
18:31I've been looking at all these photos all weekend because Lucy turned 12.
18:36And it is the pictures from the day Lucy was born exactly 12 years and two days ago.
18:45I was just looking back and like just boo-hooing the whole time and the photos that you took of
18:52this waiting room are my favorite.
18:54Jim came in the door and said, she's here!
18:58And it's like where y'all spent the majority of the time.
19:01It's right there!
19:02Y'all stayed in here for hours.
19:04All day waiting for her!
19:06I know!
19:06And it still looks exactly the same.
19:09It's frozen in time.
19:10I just wish we could do something to make this space even more welcoming and exciting and joyful.
19:18Mallory's always, always, always thinking about that.
19:21She wouldn't miss hospitality for nothing in high school.
19:25We have like 20-ish thousand dollars that has not been earmarked.
19:31Okay, okay.
19:32With $20,000, you could do new flooring.
19:35An LVT that looks like wood.
19:37New chairs, comfortable ones in like a more fun color way.
19:44Something easy to clean, wipeable.
19:46You could paint.
19:48And then having something for kiddos, like a little station, little toys.
19:53I love that.
19:54And do you remember at Allie's, the hospital where Allie had her baby?
19:58Yeah.
19:58There was a coffee station.
20:00That was really, really wonderful.
20:02There was a coffee bar.
20:02And I think it would be wonderful if you had a sink also at this coffee bar.
20:07Because when Jim comes in the door to say, she's here, the first thing you want to do is go
20:11see that baby and hold that baby.
20:13You can wash your hands in here.
20:16I love this idea.
20:18Love it.
20:1912 years.
20:20Time is flying.
20:21Easy.
20:29Love that white oak.
20:34Today's the day Greg and I are building out the closet in the L&D room.
20:39Using white oak for the paneling.
20:41Ooh, splinter.
20:42All right.
20:43You got a splinter.
20:44You getting soft on me, Greg.
20:46Oh, now we're looking at it.
20:47That's the pretty side.
20:49That is pretty.
20:50All right.
20:51That's the one that's going to go there after we cut it out.
20:53What's up, Katie?
20:55Ooh.
20:55Check this out.
20:56Why are you in scrubs again?
20:58I work here now.
20:59I mean, we're all working here.
21:01You're not going to play this.
21:02I am about to give my sister Janie an ultrasound.
21:07Whoa.
21:09I've never done it before.
21:10We're about to find out what she's going to have.
21:14You see right there?
21:16You see right there?
21:16That's a foot.
21:17That's a foot.
21:18Can't tell if it's a boy or a girl yet.
21:20Come back next week.
21:22Here.
21:22Uh-huh.
21:23Fun fact.
21:24I was actually going to be a nurse.
21:27Got accepted into nursing school.
21:29Started nursing school.
21:30So we're looking at like a cross section here.
21:32Yep.
21:32Start to move into the chest.
21:33Right after I started nursing school, I started my first renovation of a historic
21:38house.
21:39Chance and I just got married.
21:40We were renovating it and I loved it.
21:44Okay.
21:44There we go.
21:45You know, they were like, you got to be committed to this and this and this.
21:47And I was like, man, I think I just want to renovate houses.
21:50And I just left after that day and never came back.
21:56It's a girl.
21:58It is.
21:59Congratulations guys.
22:01Okay.
22:02Now we're going to get this labor and delivery room ready.
22:04That's right.
22:16Hello.
22:18Hey.
22:19You ready to talk about the waiting room?
22:22You ready to talk about what?
22:24The waiting room.
22:25What are we doing?
22:26The people in that waiting room are going to desperately need caffeine.
22:33A coffee bar.
22:34Yes.
22:35With water in it.
22:37With water in it.
22:37A small sink basin.
22:39When people hit that twinkle, twinkle little star and it's time, you can go wash your hands
22:46so you can go see the baby.
22:47So here's what I'm thinking.
22:49It's essentially a cross between a bathroom vanity and like a buffet cabinet.
22:56And then I think do a drawer on this side and that's where all the coffee stirs, sugar packets,
23:02all that goes.
23:03So we just leave it natural, do a two part epoxy.
23:07You want to help me?
23:08You want to learn how to build a trap panel?
23:09I love that.
23:11Yeah?
23:11Yeah.
23:11I've been dying enough.
23:19That's how Josh and I do it also.
23:21I'm just getting in my lip gloss.
23:23We're going to build the whole thing out of white oak.
23:25Very durable wood because it's mine and Erin's favorite.
23:28Get out of town.
23:29Just got to get out of town.
23:32If I stay, they're going to track me down.
23:34So I got to get out of town.
23:36It's a simple piece of furniture that is going to do a lot.
23:41It's going to serve a lot.
23:44So.
23:45And look how much I helped.
23:46Look how good I did.
23:47So that'll be the front?
23:49Yes.
23:49And tennis is starting in 15 minutes.
23:51I got to go get Helen.
23:52Okay.
23:54All right.
23:54Love you.
23:55I love you.
24:08So this looks like grass cloth.
24:10It isn't.
24:10But it has that great warmth and it has texture and it's bleachable.
24:15I just want every mother who stays in that room to feel pampered.
24:23Oh my goodness.
24:27I love this.
24:29Oh.
24:31It's been fun in here.
24:32I'm just tearing up.
24:33I love this.
24:40Yes.
24:40Hello.
24:41Hey guys.
24:43Yes.
24:44It's wallpaper day.
24:45I have been so pumped about this.
24:48We're trying to make it feel like a five-star hotel experience.
24:52Uh-huh.
24:52For those of you who are thinking about doing wallpaper, there are levels to wallpaper.
24:58There's type one, which pretty much amounts to residential.
25:03It's a lighter weight paper.
25:04Everything in the hospital has to be type, at least type two.
25:08Type two is just a heavier weight.
25:10It's the durability, the thickness of it.
25:12It's that a medical car can't hit it and tear it.
25:15That's really what they're after.
25:16I think it looks great.
25:18It really does.
25:19Thanks, guys.
25:20Thank you, John.
25:20I love it.
25:21Bye.
25:21Bye.
25:31We want these rooms to be on par with the cafeteria.
25:35I want to get this banana pudding.
25:37You want that, too?
25:38You want two salads?
25:39What are y'all doing here?
25:40What's up, Doc?
25:41Having lunch.
25:41Everything okay?
25:42Yeah.
25:42Everything's great.
25:43Nobody is sick.
25:44We're working on maternity ward.
25:45That's awesome.
25:46Yeah.
25:46It's looking really good.
25:47I bet it is.
25:48No one expects the hospital food to be good, but this hospital food?
25:52Straight fire.
25:53Straight fire.
25:54So good.
25:55How's the meatballs?
25:58Very good.
25:58They look pretty good.
25:59We've brought you here today to discuss your dream fetal monitor.
26:04In the labor and delivery room, one of the most important pieces of equipment is this fetal monitor,
26:09which is a computer inside a tall wood cabinet from the 90s.
26:13Yeah, it's been pretty beat up over the years, so I want to build a new one.
26:18And to find out exactly how it needs to function and all that, we're going to ask the expert.
26:22Was the overall shape of the original cabinet okay?
26:25Yeah, I think that the shape is a good shape.
26:27You know, as long as we have, I know the nurses would appreciate those monitors to kind of come up
26:32off that top shelf.
26:33All right, so 42 inches tall, like to keep the top shelf totally open, have screens mounted to the back
26:42so that the top stays clear.
26:44It's a desktop.
26:45And then have your keyboard.
26:47Like a slide out?
26:48And a pull out.
26:49Yeah.
26:49And then this can be all drawers coming down.
26:53And maybe adding some hooks on the side of the monitor.
26:56Which would be amazing.
26:57Keep those cords from getting tangled.
26:59And we're going to have some big, chunky, ugly wheels on it.
27:03I've researched, and for medical carts, they have to be able to roll over thresholds or cords.
27:08I don't know that it'll be beautiful, but it'll be nice.
27:11It'll be what you need.
27:12Yes.
27:13Hopefully.
27:13Believe me.
27:16I guess I'm needed.
27:17That's you.
27:18Yeah.
27:18It's good to see you guys.
27:19Have a good day.
27:20Good to see you.
27:20Bye.
27:21See ya.
27:30Today, to my knowledge, three babies have been born.
27:33One of them is Emerson, a little boy.
27:37We met his dad, Franklin.
27:39God bless me with a very nice, beautiful, healthy baby.
27:42I'm proud.
27:43Very proud, man.
27:45The day I'll never forget.
27:47It's just the start of the journey.
27:50As long as he grew up and be a Florida Gator fan, that's all that matters.
27:55Babies are a blessing, and I'm so glad.
27:59Several of the staff are expectant mothers.
28:02Yes.
28:03Everywhere I look, somebody's pregnant.
28:05And they're all expecting babies within a couple weeks of each other.
28:07All within a couple weeks of us finishing this project.
28:10Yes.
28:11No pressure.
28:18Okay, this is the new look for South Central maternal child.
28:24It's amazing.
28:25Such an improvement.
28:27Love it.
28:28I feel really good about all this.
28:29So I'm showing Mal all the choices we've made for labor and delivery, pediatrics, and postpartum,
28:35before we choose what we want to do with this waiting room.
28:39If you start in labor and delivery, cleanliness is the greatest emphasis in this room.
28:45A lot of stuff is going down in this room.
28:48A lot.
28:49And then postpartum, our special room.
28:52I love this.
28:54It should feel like the true hotel experience.
28:56Yes.
28:56A lot of warmth.
28:57It's a very luxurious feeling.
28:59And then pediatrics, fun, friendly, colorful.
29:04Youthful.
29:04Yeah.
29:05So now let's figure out the waiting room.
29:08I'm so excited for thinking about the waiting room.
29:12It's so important.
29:13People are going to spend a lot of time in here.
29:15We've got to figure out upholstery for our chairs.
29:17I just don't love gray.
29:20That's too textured.
29:21I don't know.
29:22I really like this one.
29:23I think it's fun.
29:25Yeah.
29:26And then every room has some green element.
29:28It may just be the artwork.
29:30Yeah.
29:30Ben's going to build a coffee bar.
29:32He's planning on oak.
29:34We need to select a stone for the top.
29:36To go on top.
29:37I love the warmth of these two.
29:39These feel very cool.
29:41These two do feel like they're right.
29:43This one has a little more breathing room.
29:46I think I like that one.
29:47I love that.
29:48Yeah?
29:49I really do.
29:58For the fetal monitor station, we're going to use mahogany.
30:03Nothing but the best for South Central.
30:07Because as you can see, if you look at all of the furniture in the hospital rooms, it's always
30:14just beat to death.
30:16So I want to make sure that we build something that in 20 years, they're not going to be wanting
30:21to replace it.
30:22I'll take you on.
30:25I'll take you on.
30:25And I'll take you on.
30:27So move on.
30:30Oh, it's up.
30:31Look at that.
30:33And if you're a kid in your hospital bed.
30:37Sky Witherspoon is here from Iowa.
30:39His company really specializes in creating digital windows, especially for hospitals.
30:46Hospital settings are their biggest customer.
30:48I think this will help so much.
30:50And it brings color and life to the room in a way that's not overstimulating.
30:55We've even done a couple of different research studies where we found that in a situation
30:59almost exactly like this, there was about a 50% reduction in stress and about a 30% reduction
31:06in anxiety.
31:07So this really helps to calm people down and put them into a better frame of mind.
31:12It's not just about taking a pretty picture and putting it onto the ceiling.
31:17So the really, one of the really cool things about this is this actually changes.
31:21Uh huh.
31:22So from your sunrise to sunset, this will match up with what is happening outdoors.
31:27Well, I think it's wonderful.
31:29Yeah.
31:29Thanks for bringing the sky.
31:30Totally.
31:31Yeah.
31:31This is good.
31:32Totally, totally.
31:32I love it so much.
31:36Waiting room furniture is here.
31:38It is ready to be opened up, uncovered.
31:42The coffee bar is in place.
31:43I mean, we're there.
31:51We're looking for the waiting room.
31:53Our waiting room is under construction now, but we do have a waiting room way down the
31:57hall.
31:57That's not actually true anymore.
31:59Yes, actually.
32:00Okay.
32:00Oh, what?
32:01It's ready.
32:01The waiting room is ready.
32:03No way.
32:03It's officially really ready.
32:08Oh, my gosh.
32:09Oh, my goodness, y'all.
32:10Here we go.
32:11Oh, good.
32:12Isn't it good?
32:13Yeah.
32:13This is so good.
32:14Oh, my goodness.
32:16Oh, dang.
32:17I love the chairs.
32:19Look at the coffee bar.
32:20Oh, my word.
32:21Look how beautiful.
32:22Oh, I love it.
32:23This is amazing.
32:25Amazing.
32:25And there's a sink so people can wash their hands before they can meet a baby.
32:30So adults can hang down here, have coffee.
32:32It can be a little more chill.
32:34But then there's a kid's area.
32:36A kid's area?
32:36Where it can be a little roundier.
32:38Oh, wow.
32:40Oh, I love it.
32:41Yeah.
32:44Look.
32:44All of it is super cleanable, bleachable, wipeable.
32:47What are y'all building?
32:48A house.
32:49A house?
32:51Yep.
32:51So y'all have fun.
32:52I'm going to check out this coffee maker.
32:54Keep going.
32:54Yeah, you want to see it?
32:55Y'all want a cup of coffee?
32:56Anybody?
32:57Sure.
33:07Renovating some rooms in the hospital was hugely important to me because I just care very,
33:14very much about this hospital and the success of it, and that people have the experience
33:19that I had.
33:22I wanted labor and delivery to feel fresh, bright, clean, professional, comforting.
33:35And then for pediatrics, I just thought, what would delight my girls?
33:40All right.
33:41That looks so good.
33:42All right.
33:43Kids can't pull it off the wall.
33:44What would make them feel like this is not a scary place?
33:49This is a good place where I'm going to get better.
33:55I wanted postpartum to feel like springtime, celebration.
34:00I wanted it to make the mother feel beautiful.
34:03This room is so important to me that it feels like this wonderful transition to your next
34:09chapter as a mother.
34:11Those early weeks, you don't get a lot of sleep.
34:14You're learning your baby, and your baby's learning you.
34:18And I think if you can make the very beginning of that journey a little less stressful and
34:24a little more beautiful, then it can only be good for the mom and the baby.
34:31All right.
34:32You lead the way, Shanai.
34:33All righty.
34:35Oh, wow.
34:36Wow.
34:39Wow.
34:40This looks nice.
34:41Looks great.
34:42Looks like my house.
34:43Yeah, exactly.
34:44It's very homey.
34:46Yes.
34:47Yeah.
34:47Oh, wow.
34:48I love it.
34:49Yeah.
34:49You guys are doing a great job.
34:51Thanks.
34:51We wanted it to feel restful.
34:54And this is the room that's the most hotel experience of all the rooms we've done.
34:59Yes.
35:00Needed.
35:00I feel like it's very welcoming in here.
35:02Good.
35:03A little softer lighting.
35:04I do like the lighting.
35:06Yeah.
35:06Not as harsh fluorescent.
35:06Like the lighting off the ceiling.
35:07Yep.
35:08Perfect.
35:08This lighting around the perimeter that should just feel like a glove.
35:12We have sconces that feel like home.
35:15Very restful.
35:16Yes.
35:16Restful.
35:17I got all Mississippi artists for the rooms.
35:20This is artwork by Emma Carr.
35:22And I love it because it feels so celebratory.
35:24It feels like springtime.
35:25Yeah.
35:26And it's a new birth.
35:27Yes.
35:27But some of the coolest things.
35:29Maybe the best thing is, one, we have a recliner now.
35:32Yes.
35:33But this.
35:36Oh.
35:37Wow.
35:37They both fold out.
35:39So it's a full-size bed.
35:42With no footboard for the tall dance.
35:45That's right.
35:46Yeah.
35:46This is so much better than what I slept on.
35:49Excuse me, what I laid on.
35:52Yeah.
35:53And the lighted mirror.
35:56Giving Mama plenty of space to fix up.
35:59Yeah.
35:59That was a big request from all of my friends.
36:02Please, just a little counter space at the sink so you can fix up.
36:05Yes.
36:05Because it feels so good when you have your first shower and then you can go and brush your hair.
36:11Put on a little makeup and feel like yourself again.
36:14So we have a lighted mirror.
36:16And then the bathroom.
36:18Wallpaper and lighting went a long way on the bathroom.
36:21Oh, wow.
36:21Oh, my.
36:22This looks great.
36:24Very good.
36:25Much less hospital.
36:27Yeah.
36:27Looks very homey.
36:28And the cabinets.
36:29Yep.
36:29The cabinets are perfect.
36:31Labor and delivery next.
36:33Let's go.
36:33Let's do it.
36:34We got to go pick up Anna along the way.
36:39Oh, oh, my gosh.
36:43Wow.
36:44Better?
36:44Much better.
36:45So much better.
36:46Much better.
36:47Okay.
36:47You have space.
36:48Yes.
36:48Tons of space.
36:50What do we think?
36:51This looks great.
36:52The same room.
36:53Yeah.
36:53The armoire is gone, but we do have a little storage here for bags and things.
36:58Awesome.
36:59Family's waiting.
37:00We've got oak on the back wall.
37:03That's all storage for you.
37:04I love the lighting.
37:05Huge difference.
37:06It looks great.
37:07It really looks good.
37:08I'm so impressed.
37:09Yeah.
37:10What do y'all think about these floors?
37:11Ben learned a new skill.
37:13Uh-oh.
37:13I learned how to weld vinyl.
37:15I did these two seams here.
37:17He said they were the least important, so I could try those.
37:21But you made a great fetal monitoring cart.
37:24That came out good.
37:25Solid mahogany.
37:26Clear surface on top.
37:28Typewriter on its own drawer.
37:30Keyboard.
37:30Typewriter.
37:31Sorry.
37:31Keyboard.
37:32We're trying to leave the 1990s with this renovation, not go back to it.
37:37And then we have, uh, I wanted to focus on a better baby washing station.
37:41Because I had no idea you were washing babies in that pedestal sink, but now...
37:46Check that out.
37:47Isn't that better?
37:48So fancy.
37:49I hope it's helpful.
37:51Yes.
37:51And then a little space to the baby salon.
37:55Looks great.
37:55And then the bathroom.
37:57The wallpaper is a more modern look that I think works great with that existing tile
38:02that we had to keep.
38:04Mm-hmm.
38:04We have new tile floors.
38:06Nailed it.
38:06Yes.
38:06Nailed it.
38:07Anyway, I hope that what these mothers feel is peace.
38:12Yeah.
38:12As they're bringing a baby into the world.
38:14They deserve it.
38:15And for y'all, I hope it makes it easier to move around.
38:18Yeah.
38:18You got a lot more free space.
38:19Yes.
38:19There is a lot more.
38:20The room feels a lot bigger.
38:21Yeah.
38:21It feels a lot bigger.
38:22The reduction in furniture.
38:24Okay.
38:25On to pediatrics.
38:26We need to go find Dr. Tibbs.
38:28Mm-hmm.
38:29All three of the rooms are special and meaningful to me in a different way.
38:34No favorite?
38:35No favorite.
38:36No favorite.
38:54No favorite.
38:55It's a virtual skylight.
38:58Virtual skylight.
38:58I love it.
38:58But it changes with daylight.
39:00Oh.
39:00So there's a button.
39:01You hit circadian cycle.
39:03And so this will be at night.
39:05Wow.
39:05Down to darkness.
39:07That's right.
39:07And then as the sun's coming up, it starts to...
39:10Oh.
39:10It's been fun in here.
39:12I'm just tearing up.
39:13I love it.
39:15Yes.
39:15I love the painting.
39:18We have Adam Trest in pediatrics.
39:20It felt right.
39:21I see that.
39:22Yes.
39:22I love it.
39:23Yes.
39:24Oh.
39:25Beautiful.
39:26This is so gorgeous.
39:28This is amazing.
39:29I see the best.
39:30Yes.
39:30You sure can, yeah.
39:32Oh my goodness.
39:34Oh.
39:34I love it.
39:36Oh.
39:37It's so pretty.
39:38So pretty.
39:39Oh.
39:40Yeah.
39:41So lovely.
39:41We wanted it to feel residential.
39:43And it does.
39:44It feels like home.
39:45It does.
39:46And like, look at these floors.
39:47The floor and the patterns are so much better.
39:50With the little inlay.
39:52When I started practicing medicine 30 years ago, the room didn't matter.
39:58You were in a room.
39:59There was a bed.
40:00You know.
40:01The ambience was not important.
40:03But studies have since shown how important ambience is.
40:07And like, there's nothing scary about being here.
40:09Nope.
40:11Only healing.
40:12And happiness.
40:13And happiness.
40:14And joy.
40:14Yeah.
40:15I love the couch.
40:16I love the pattern to the couch.
40:18And we hope it's more comfortable for mom and dad.
40:21You have outdone yourselves.
40:23This is lovely.
40:24I'm so happy.
40:24We are so thankful.
40:25Our babies and mamas and daddies are going to be so thankful.
40:28I want to see what everybody else thinks.
40:31I know.
40:31They need to see us.
40:32I'm so excited.
40:34Yeah, the rooms are amazing.
40:37But pediatrics, yeah.
40:39We win.
40:40We do.
40:42Oh, y'all.
40:43That is so beautiful.
40:45Oh, my goodness.
40:48So good.
40:49And I bet you're glad that we're going to be out of your hair soon.
40:52Yeah.
40:53Yeah.
40:54No.
40:55No.
40:56We have 27 rooms left.
40:58Wash, rinse, and repeat.
41:00Yeah.
41:00Just do that.
41:01Thank y'all so much.
41:02We're so glad.
41:03Thank you for letting us do this.
41:06Like, because this is kind of like home to me.
41:09My dad worked here for 44 years.
41:11Oh, my goodness.
41:12And other people might not realize how the hospital becomes a home.
41:17It's like a town within your town.
41:19Yeah.
41:19And I have, like, the greatest memories here.
41:23Oh.
41:24And I just didn't intend to cry about it.
41:27It's okay.
41:27I'm proud, too.
41:29Thanks.
41:30Yeah.
41:30The way you take care of people as if they're your family.
41:35Yeah.
41:35Like, you are angels.
41:37Yeah.
41:38Well, you have left y'all's mark on our maternity ward.
41:42Okay.
41:42And we will be back up here more.
41:43Yes.
41:44Somebody will have a baby soon.
41:45It won't be me.
41:46Those are famous last words.
41:48No, those are last words.
41:49Is there wood I can knock on?
41:51Bye, y'all.
41:52Bye.
42:00Oh, my goodness.
42:03This is the same room.
42:04No.
42:05Stop.
42:05My heart is just so happy.
42:07And I'm just, tears.
42:10Just had a baby.
42:13Janie.
42:14Yeah.
42:15Oh, my goodness.
42:16She's perfect.
42:29This is amazing.
42:32They're going to run me around.
42:35Yes.
42:35This property is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
42:38Are we still in Jones County?
42:39Or an Italian restaurant.
42:42Holy cannoli.
42:43What, Ben?
42:45And I get to let go of the rain.
42:49Brittany is, she's a firecracker in human form.
42:52She could explode on you.
42:53Are you pranking me?
42:54I am serious as a heart attack.
42:56But she could also shoot into the sky and amaze you.
42:59Oh, the buildings.
43:01I love the wallpaper.
43:03You'll see.
43:04Oh, no.
43:05These walls are white.
43:06You'll see.
43:07You'll see.
43:08It's delicious.
