00:38I'm grateful we got you out of trouble before it happened.
00:40Well, you know what I think?
00:41Well, it couldn't be much. It takes brains for thinking.
00:44Yeah, well, I think you're jealous.
00:47Just because I find the only pretty gal in town who's not wearing some man's brand.
00:52Didn't I tell you he's short on brains?
00:54Ah, but she was wearing some man's brand, Casanova.
00:57And he was rounding up a few of his friends.
00:59And they were fixing to take you apart.
01:01But there was no talk about putting you back together again.
01:04And me and Adam being the charitable fellas we are,
01:06we just decided your hide might be worth saving.
01:08Not that we care, but Pa might have been a little upset.
01:14It's a .45.
01:16Sounds like it came from old Pete Redmond's place.
01:18Well, he don't know no .45.
01:36Pete.
01:39They got everything.
01:41Three years' work gone.
01:44Pete, did you get a good look at him?
01:48He was wearing masks.
01:51One of them was a big redhead.
01:55A redheaded man?
01:57Uh, hat fell off.
02:01There was four of them.
02:05Pete, don't you worry.
02:07We're going to get a doctor for you out of Virginia City.
02:09How is he?
02:19He's just fine.
02:22Old Pete ain't hurting no more.
02:27He's just fine.
02:28Good job.
02:39Come on.
02:40Come on.
02:42Then he's doing so.
02:46Okay.
02:46Good job.
02:53I'm out.
03:04THE END
03:24Ah, hello, Miles.
03:26Well, noon, Mr. Cartwright.
03:28Denver around?
03:29Yeah, inside.
03:31Walking about six foot off the ground.
03:33Nervous as a rustling church.
03:37He hasn't had this buggy out since that schoolteacher left.
03:40Now, don't tell him he's getting married.
03:42No.
03:43Ain't gonna get married.
03:44Don't have to.
03:45Gonna have a woman around the place again.
03:48Connie's coming home.
03:49Yeah.
03:49By golly.
03:51More o'clock stage.
03:52Yeah?
03:52Tell you, Mr. Cartwright, that man's scared to death.
03:57I know, reckon, since she's been back to that eastern school going on four years,
04:00he figures she's the Queen of England.
04:04Well, you know, she's going to see a lot of changes in this place.
04:08Yeah.
04:08Denver's done a good job with it in four years.
04:15Move for the love of Zachary P. Taylor.
04:17That you, Denver?
04:18Yeah.
04:19That's me, Denver.
04:27Where are you preaching?
04:28Nowhere.
04:29Well, I wish I was.
04:31Behind a pulpit.
04:32I could take off these doggone gators.
04:36Ben, you think a man's feet keep on growing?
04:40Well, I've heard that when a person gets older, his body shrinks.
04:44I don't know about feet, though.
04:45Well, I haven't had these gators on since the Harrelson wedding, but I swear, either they're
04:50a size smaller and my feet are a size larger.
04:55Ben, you think I look all right?
04:58Well, you know, if I didn't know better, I'd swear you were a senator.
05:01I'm going in to meet Connie.
05:03I know.
05:03I know.
05:03Milstead?
05:04Yeah, he told me.
05:05Sure, I told him.
05:07I ain't forgot how to talk.
05:09Doesn't seem like four years, does it?
05:11It does to me.
05:12I tried to get the house fixed up so Connie'd have a decent place to come home to.
05:17I don't know.
05:18You think she'll like it?
05:19Oh, it looks real nice.
05:20I had some new curtains made for a room, some kind of lace.
05:24They're real pretty to me.
05:26Well, then it is real pretty.
05:28Now, what are you worried about?
05:29That little girl won't even know the place.
05:30I know.
05:31I know.
05:31But she's grown up now.
05:32Oh, 18, her last birthday.
05:34You make it sound like she's an old maid.
05:36Once she left here, she was a kid.
05:38What do you know about it, you old goat?
05:40Who's an old goat?
05:41I ain't more than two years older than you are.
05:43That makes you an old goat.
05:45Two cents, I'd quit.
05:46For two cents, I'd fire you.
05:48Now, hold on, you two.
05:49How long have you known each other?
05:51Too dang long.
05:52Since before Connie was born.
05:54That's long enough.
05:55Well, Denver, if I were you, I'd hold on to Miles as a foreman.
05:58You give me one good reason why I should.
06:00Well, if you don't, Connie will have you hide.
06:09You better get going, Denver.
06:11That stage lab will be early.
06:12Well, it hasn't happened yet, but I suppose it could.
06:16Ben, you wouldn't want to ride in with me, would you?
06:19Well, no.
06:20You two have a lot to talk about.
06:22Yeah, I guess you're right.
06:24Four years is a long time.
06:27Well, you sure I look all right, Ben?
06:29Well, I told you.
06:30Yeah, like a senator.
06:32Ben, you can't lie worth a hoot.
06:35Well, and, uh, like a state senator, then.
06:40Oh, there is one thing.
06:41Yeah, what's that?
06:42Well, you know, I was thinking, uh, it's a little short notice, I know, but this is Saturday night, and,
06:47uh...
06:48Connie coming home, I thought I'd like to give a little welcome home party for Connie at the Ponderosa tonight.
06:53Well, that's fine, Ben.
06:54If I can get these gators broke in by that time.
06:57Well, uh, if you want to, you can come barefoot.
07:00Thanks, Ben.
07:02Connie will like a party.
07:07Well, I guess I'd better get along home and have the boys spread the word around about the party.
07:15Well, I, uh, won't be able to make the party, Mr. Cartwright.
07:19Somebody's got to watch the store.
07:20Oh, I'm sure about that, Miles.
07:29That's all we found on him, Paul.
07:33We followed the four men until we lost their trail, and then we went back and buried Pete.
07:38Not very much to leave after a lifetime of hard work, is it?
07:42What could anybody expect to get, robbing old Pete Redford?
07:45Well, I don't know, Adam.
07:48Some people say Pete did fairly well with that mine of his.
07:51He could have had some money stashed away somewhere.
07:53Paul, this seemed to me like it's a, like it's an organized outfit.
07:56This is the third robbery in less than a month.
07:58No, it's the first killing.
08:00Pete was killed because he got a good look at one of the men.
08:03Oh, that's so?
08:05What'd he say about him?
08:05Well, not much, except, except he had red hair.
08:10Hmm.
08:12Well, I'll talk to Denver McKee.
08:14He might be able to pick up the trail you boys lost.
08:16Yeah, he's probably good at that.
08:17Old Denver's about half-bloodhound anyhow.
08:20No, meantime, you go ahead and pass the word around about the party.
08:25I don't think Pete would want to spoil Connie's homecoming.
08:29You keep quiet about this. I'll talk to Denver.
08:31Right, Pop.
08:56Hey, is that you I smell, little brother?
08:59Well, it couldn't be you or Adam. You two smell like horses.
09:02Smells a bit like the Wednesday afternoon ladies' society, don't you think?
09:06Yeah, or maybe, maybe Walsh's livery stable.
09:09Hey, will you fellas take a long walk, like to China?
09:11Well, our little brother, we'd be happy to, but we gotta hang around here to take care of your hide.
09:15Well, I'll tell Connie McKee to be sure to thank you.
09:18Oh, uh, Joe, uh, remember, don't mention anything about Pete Redfern at the party, okay?
09:23Yeah, right. Did he have any kin?
09:25No, no.
09:27According to Paul, his wife died a few years back, and that's how come he's out here mining.
09:31Hmm.
09:32Well, you boys see a red-headed man at the party tonight.
09:34Be sure to shoot first and talk about it later.
09:36Hey, wait a minute.
09:37Josh Perkins is coming to that party tonight.
09:39He's red-headed and the best dang barber in Virginia City.
09:42Hey, I sure wouldn't want to shoot him.
09:44Oh, you know, I would if I were you.
09:47Look at the haircut they gave you.
10:00Here you are, Charlie.
10:06Wonder what's keeping Denver McKee and that daughter of his, they're late.
10:10Now, listen, Fleming, have you ever taken a woman anywhere and be untied?
10:14Little Connie McKee, you know, the way she used to ride that horse, I thought she'd break her neck before
10:17she got a chance to go to school.
10:19Wonder whether she changed the East or the East changed her.
10:21I guess the East rubbed some rough spots off her, but I imagine she's still the same girl she was.
10:26At least I hope so.
10:27For Denver's sake, he was shaking like a leaf when he went to pick her up at the stage.
10:32Here's to Denver McKee, the greatest sheriff Colorado ever had.
10:35Here's to Denver McKee, the best Indian scout in the U.S. Army.
10:39Here's to Denver McKee, the most frightened father in Nevada.
10:45Oh, there they come.
10:55It's got to be Connie, because she's with old Denver.
10:58I don't know.
10:59It don't look like Connie to me.
11:03Howie, you want to know something, fellas?
11:05I don't really care who that is.
11:09Welcome home, Connie.
11:10Hello, little Joe.
11:10It's so nice to see you.
11:12Hey, wait a minute.
11:14Is that a way to say hello to an old friend?
11:21In the East, that's the way we treat freshmen.
11:23Looks like you two are going to take up just where you left off four years ago, still fighting.
11:28Hello, Haas.
11:29It's so good to see you.
11:30Hi, Connie.
11:31Doggone it.
11:31We like not even recognize you.
11:33You wait right here.
11:34We got a real big surprise for you.
11:35All right.
11:36Adam, how are you?
11:38Oh, Connie, you have changed.
11:40Not so you could notice.
11:42You still got that same old sweet temper.
11:44Hello, how are you?
11:45Welcome home, Connie.
11:47I didn't expect a welcome home party like this.
11:49It's so wonderful.
11:50Oh, I'd forgotten how beautiful the Ponderosa is.
11:53Well, she put on her best party dress for you.
11:56Denver, she's your daughter.
11:57You better introduce her to the guests.
11:59Thanks, Ben.
12:01Folks, most of you remember my little girl.
12:04But for those who don't, Connie McKee.
12:08Welcome home.
12:09All right.
12:09Come on, Connie.
12:20Oh, it's beautiful.
12:22But it's a shame to cut it.
12:23Well, we can't eat it until you do.
12:25Well, just make a wish first and then blow.
12:33She's a real beauty, Denver.
12:35She sure is, Ben.
12:37I can say that, because I can't take any credit for it.
12:40She's the spitting image of her mother.
12:42Yeah.
12:43I only hope I've done right.
12:46About what?
12:47Connie.
12:48How do you know about girls, Ben?
12:51You see, I didn't want her to grow up here like a wild bronco, marry the first saddle tramp that
12:56asked her.
12:57Or get tired of the ranch and head for San Francisco to twist the town by the tail.
13:02Well, I wanted to give her what you've given your boys, security, background.
13:08I wanted to have a chance to see something besides steers and horses and a kitchen stole.
13:15Well, you've done it, and I know it hasn't been easy.
13:22Here's a little peace offer.
13:23Why don't we call it a truce?
13:25Well, seeing as you started the war, I accept.
13:27There'll be another war, little Joe, if you try to hog the guest of honor.
13:30Uh, Connie, why don't we go somewhere where we can draw up a peace treaty?
13:33I have a better idea.
13:34Let's have some punch.
13:35Hey, that is a good idea.
13:36Why don't you two go ahead?
13:38Well, come on, fellas.
13:40Connie and I are old friends.
13:41But Connie wants to make new friends, don't you, Connie?
13:44Since you've been east, little Joe is a changed man, Connie.
13:47He doesn't seem any different to me.
13:49That's just on the surface.
13:51Underneath, he's Wilder and the Loco'd Steer.
13:53Right, Mort?
13:54Wilder sometimes.
13:55In Virginia City, they have what they call the Girls' Protective Association.
13:59When little Joe comes into town, all those mamas flew into action.
14:04Why, little Joe, I had no idea.
14:06Miss Connie, would you care to meet some of my friends?
14:08Yes, I'd love to.
14:10Well, Connie, I...
14:15I hope she isn't really mad at little Joe.
14:18Oh, no, she's not mad at Joe.
14:20She's trying to show him that he isn't the only man in Nevada.
14:24Do him good.
14:30What's the matter, little brother?
14:31You having trouble?
14:33She looks like I got typhoid fever or something.
14:35What's the matter with me, anyway?
14:37Uh, got a couple hours, I'll tell you.
14:40Oh, never mind.
14:41She's not the only girl in Nevada.
14:43She's the prettiest.
14:49Oh, come on.
14:51You're not going to really eat the rest of that.
14:52It's too good a cake to let go of waste, Joe.
14:55Thanks so much for everything, all of you.
14:58That even includes you, little Joe.
15:03Thanks, man.
15:04For a while there tonight,
15:06you made me forget Connie'd ever been way at all.
15:20Well, the short straw stays.
15:22The rest of us get Denver,
15:23see if we can pick up the trail of the killers.
15:28Well, guess who's got it.
15:30Guess you stay, Joe.
15:34I still don't see why we all can't go.
15:36Well, somebody has to stay here.
15:39Make yourself useful, Joe.
15:41Help number one cousin with the dishes.
16:01That's pretty good shooting there, Denver.
16:03We use this way to spend money, Ben.
16:05I just started wondering if I still had the touch.
16:09Well, I guess it's a little like swimming.
16:11Man never forgets.
16:12You ready to go?
16:13Yeah, I'm ready.
16:14I guess we better get started.
16:16Get started where?
16:17Connie, I didn't want you to be bothered with any of this,
16:20but you see,
16:21yesterday, an old prospector named Pete Redfern
16:25got killed, his life-saving stone.
16:27Oh, that's terrible.
16:29Well, it's more than that.
16:30Last night, two men got killed
16:32and a Silverado mine payroll was taken.
16:36We're just going out, Scott,
16:37around and see what we can find out.
16:39I see.
16:41But why do you have to go?
16:43Well, Connie, I just told you,
16:45three men have been killed.
16:47I'd almost forgotten about the violence in the West
16:50and the fact that nobody is immune
16:52or wants to be.
16:55We mean to try to put a stop to this
16:57before there's any further violence.
16:58Do you?
17:00Or do you enjoy it?
17:03We're just trying to do what we feel we have to do.
17:06We'll leave my dad out of it.
17:09He spent most of his life with violence.
17:12It wasn't a game with him.
17:13It was his business, and he's retired.
17:15Can't you leave him alone?
17:17Connie, these are neighbors asking me to help
17:20because I know about these things.
17:22Connie,
17:23last year, 200 head of steer vanished,
17:26completely without a trace.
17:28And 50 men couldn't find him.
17:30Now we're looking for four men.
17:33Now, the sheriff needs all the help he can get.
17:36Now, if we find the men, and I hope we do,
17:40well,
17:42it's not going to make us feel good.
17:45Not going to make us feel big and brave.
17:50That's right, Connie.
17:52None of us get any joy out of this.
17:55Just something has to be done.
17:58I'm sorry, Mr. Cartwright.
18:01You will be careful, won't you, Dad?
18:06I didn't get this old being careless.
18:18Connie, you try not to think about it.
18:21Where'd you leave little Joe?
18:22Back at the Ponderosa?
18:24Oh, he's got a few chores to do.
18:26Not too many.
18:28Nice day for a ride.
18:30If little Joe wants to see me,
18:32he knows where I am.
18:33The only trouble is,
18:34he can't leave the ranch.
18:36Well, let him stay there.
18:38I certainly have no intention of running after him.
18:55Are you late?
18:57Don't tell me you were expecting me.
19:00Well, Pa didn't tell you had to stay here
19:01and do a few things around the house, huh?
19:03I really don't remember,
19:04because I really don't care.
19:06Oh.
19:08Well, in that case,
19:08you probably wouldn't be very interested
19:10in a little present I was fixing up for you.
19:11A present for me?
19:13Mm-hmm.
19:14Yeah, if you don't care,
19:15there really isn't much point to it.
19:18Did I say that?
19:19Yeah, well, didn't you?
19:20Well, I may have,
19:21but that was before you mentioned a present.
19:24Oh.
19:25Well, they really taught you a lot
19:26in that girl's go-back case,
19:28how to be mercenary in one easy lesson.
19:30You're so wrong, little Joe.
19:32No woman alive needs that lesson.
19:35She's born that way.
19:37Oh, I just didn't know they admitted to it.
19:39But since you did,
19:42how do you like him?
19:46Oh, little Joe,
19:47he's beautiful.
19:52Well, if that's the way you say thanks,
19:53it'll just take me a second
19:54to rustle up about a dozen more
19:56just like him.
19:57Never mind.
19:58One beautiful horse like this
19:59is enough for anybody.
20:00Maybe so,
20:01but I don't hardly think
20:02one kiss is enough for anybody.
20:03I don't think so.
20:39Why, little Joe, I thought you had to stay back at the ranch.
20:43I know when I have something better to do, like kissing my best girl.
20:48You mean kissing girls, don't you? Any girl?
20:52Well, now, where in the world did you get that notion?
20:54It wasn't hard. Almost everyone at the party last night volunteered that information. And more.
21:00Oh, you're not going to believe them.
21:02Well, why shouldn't I?
21:03Well, because they're lying.
21:05You mean there's no such girl as, uh, Joan Curry?
21:09Well, sure, there's such a girl as Joan, but she's a...
21:12And, uh, how about, uh, Carol Childress and Judy Polk and, uh, Sally Putnam?
21:22How do you do it?
21:23You haven't been back 24 hours and you know every girl I've ever talked to.
21:26I have only mentioned four. Would you like me to tell you the rest of the list?
21:31No, never mind.
21:33Of course, uh, you didn't do anything when you were back east.
21:36Except maybe knit socks.
21:37Oh, you know very well I went to a girl's school.
21:40Mm-hmm.
21:41Yeah, only the way I heard it, there was a boys' school right down the block.
21:45How long's your list?
21:47You'll die wondering, little Joe.
21:50Look, Connie, those girls didn't mean anything to me.
21:52They were just...
21:54Girls?
21:56Yeah, that's right. They were just girls.
21:58Well, that's exactly what I am.
22:00A girl.
22:02Uh-uh.
22:03Now, you're a very special girl.
22:14There was something I wanted to ask you.
22:17Are you going back east?
22:18Well, I'm not sure. Why?
22:21I just don't want you to go back, that's all.
22:23Well, that's hardly reason enough.
22:26Because I think you're very beautiful.
22:28That still isn't much of a...
22:29I just don't like you very much.
22:37I've only been back for 24 hours, little Joe.
22:41Tell me the same thing in 24 days.
23:09Now, if we cut across the Rimrock,
23:12and we can come in through the brakes.
23:18All right, how come you three are back, Sassel?
23:20We lost a trail.
23:22Four horses? How'd you lose a trail like that?
23:24It wasn't easy.
23:27They went into the Flint Canyons up near the timber line.
23:29Rocks so hard there,
23:30you can drive a thousand head of cattle through that part
23:33and never leave a sign.
23:34They've got to be up here in the Sierra somewhere.
23:36Of one of those high meadows, probably.
23:38They've got to have grass and water.
23:39Yeah, but Adam, there must be a hundred places like that up there.
23:42We could ride for a year and not find them all.
23:44Oh, you could find them the first day.
23:46They've had all the brakes so far.
23:47It's about time we had one.
23:49We'll ride out at dawn.
23:52Uh, Pa?
23:54Hmm?
23:56Yeah, I'm sorry.
23:57I can't go with you.
23:58Oh?
24:00You mean there's, uh,
24:01there's something you prefer to the High Sierras?
24:05Well, no, it's just that, uh...
24:07See, I didn't expect you'd be back so soon,
24:09so I promised Connie I'd take her into Virginia City.
24:13Hmm?
24:13Hey, Joe.
24:15Ain't you afraid you might be over-courting that little gal?
24:18I mean, you keep on like this,
24:19and she's liable to think you want to marry her.
24:21Uh, Joe.
24:24I think you ought to ride up into the mountains with us.
24:27It, uh...
24:28Well, there's a lot of snow up there,
24:29and, uh, maybe it'd cool you up.
24:33Yeah, what's your big rush anyhow, Joe?
24:35You done without that little gal for four years.
24:36One more day ain't gonna hurt nothing.
24:38Pa, you want me to ride with you?
24:40I will.
24:41No, you go ahead with your plans with Connie.
24:49You know?
24:51I think our little brother's coming down
24:53with a real bad case of lovitas.
24:55Mm-hmm.
24:56Well, never mind the lovitas.
24:57Let's get back to this.
24:59Now, look.
24:59We'll get up through the high meadow.
25:09Oh, I'm getting about half tired of this canyon.
25:12We must have been up here seven or eight times.
25:14I'm not only tired of the canyon,
25:16I'm just plain tired.
25:18All right, this is how Denver lost the trail,
25:21so this is where we start hunting.
25:22Start and finish.
25:24Above here, there's a half a mile of flint
25:26and wash rocks, four canyons,
25:27and all the points of the compass to choose from.
25:30Paul?
25:31Hmm?
25:32What if they ain't up there at all?
25:34What if they just come this far
25:35to make us think they're going up there?
25:37With us behind them,
25:38they'd have to head for high country.
25:40Just a minute now, Adam.
25:41What do you got in mind, boy?
25:43Well, sir,
25:43a fox will double back on a hound, won't it?
25:45How come a man can't?
25:47I mean,
25:47they could lead their horses across the rocks
25:49and get over into
25:50Little Branch Canyon
25:51and go all the way back down the valley
25:52and then leave us hunting up here
25:54in the big country.
25:56Yeah.
25:58That might be just worth looking into.
26:00Come on.
26:16Four or five horses, Paul.
26:17They did double back.
26:29Well, one sure way to cover up your tracks
26:31is a ride down the busiest road you can find.
26:34They did take quite a chance, though.
26:35They might have been seen.
26:37Yeah.
26:38Well, I'm thinking that they just didn't care
26:39if they were.
26:40What do you mean, Paul?
26:42It means that the killers aren't strangers.
26:45That's right.
26:46They could afford a double back.
26:48I'd begin it to think that
26:50they could even be one of our neighbors.
26:55Come on!
27:08You can't keep your finger off that trigger.
27:10It wasn't my fault
27:11one of them saw us coming.
27:12It can still be easy.
27:14I'll throw enough lead into them
27:15to keep them busy.
27:17Brennan can work around
27:17back of the cabin
27:18and drop a torch on the roof.
27:40Come on, leave it!
27:56Let's go, boss.
28:03Corey!
28:07Here, sit in this barrel.
28:09Easy.
28:13Come out of nowhere.
28:15One minute it's quiet as church.
28:18The next minute,
28:20Jess is down and
28:21bullets her.
28:22Whizzing like bees that are swarming.
28:26Did you get a look at any of them?
28:28Saw four of them.
28:30All masked but one.
28:32Hat on the
28:33the back of his head.
28:36Red hair, Sean.
28:38I
28:39never seen him before,
28:40but
28:41I'd know him if I'd ever seen him again.
28:44That was no use, Pa.
28:46They had fresh horses.
28:47Ours were done when we got here.
28:49What about the others, Corey?
28:51Mask, like I said.
28:52But there was one.
28:54Clothes, maybe, or
28:55the way he moved.
28:57I
28:57I
28:58couldn't put a name to him,
28:59but I
29:00I
29:00I
29:01swear I've seen him a dozen times.
29:03Looks like he was right about him being our neighbors, Paul.
29:05Yeah.
29:07Let's get Corey to a doctor,
29:08and then we'll make a few social calls.
29:11Easy, Corey.
29:13Easy, this.
29:34Well, the boys seem happy.
29:37How about you?
29:39I don't like the way things are going.
29:42Why?
29:43What's wrong?
29:44There went to be no killings.
29:45We decided that when we started all this.
29:48Well, look, when you point a gun at a man,
29:50sometimes he has to go for his own.
29:53When that happens,
29:54he's got to pull the trigger.
29:56If I learned one thing as a sheriff,
29:59it was that.
30:00You never learn to shoot no man in the back.
30:07Harley's killing those two payroll guards.
30:09Got this whole valley steered up.
30:12Well, maybe Harley was a little hasty.
30:15Don't happen again.
30:15I'll take care of that.
30:18Meantime, we've got a posse on our necks.
30:20Why worry about that?
30:22I've let other posses around in circles.
30:25Till they got dizzy and quit,
30:26I can do it again.
30:27This ain't other posses.
30:29This is Ben Cartwright and his boys.
30:31They ain't gonna quit.
30:32It was simple, honest cow, man.
30:34From sun up till dust.
30:35Just chasing strays out of the drawers.
30:39Stand for them, not strays.
30:43Any good cow man rides by,
30:46he's gonna see you just drifting a few hair
30:48up and down the valley.
30:50Now, we've been in this a long time.
30:52How come you're getting a sweat up about it now?
30:57I'm thinking of Connie like we both was when we started.
31:00Miles, I know you love that kid like she was your own daughter.
31:05I know you're worried about her finding out she won't.
31:10A couple of more jobs like the last one,
31:12we'll have everything we ever wanted for her.
31:17I don't figure it that way.
31:20Now, wait a minute.
31:21You getting ideas about quitting me?
31:24They both thought I quit, Denver.
31:28But I don't think we can.
31:30What are you getting at?
31:31First it was just you and me.
31:33Then you sent me out to the Colorado Badlands.
31:36Pick up a lot of hard cases.
31:38Give them big talk about big pickings.
31:42Hey, they've had a taste of it.
31:45You can't expect them to let go now.
31:47I can call this thing off any time I want to.
31:51Can you?
31:53Harley!
31:54Brennan!
31:55All of you!
32:02We heard talk about some of you boys wanting to pull out.
32:05Where'd you hear that?
32:07With the payroll we've piled up, we've bet them $30,000 now.
32:11That's nothing of what we're going to do.
32:13We've got more men coming in.
32:14Good men.
32:17Denver here was wondering how you men felt about a man quitting with his share if he wants to.
32:23Why, nobody better even think of pulling out.
32:26We've come here to clean up.
32:27That's real good with me, and that's what I'm aiming to do.
32:33Not the way you feel about it, boss?
32:37Sure.
32:39Miles and I just wanted to see how you felt.
32:42Don't worry, boss.
32:43The first man tries to run out on us, I'll kill.
32:45Don't worry, boss.
33:16Trouble?
33:18Well, they jumped Winkley and Corey.
33:23You know, they put up a fight.
33:26Winkley got killed and Corey got hit.
33:29Bad?
33:30Well, not too bad.
33:32Thanks.
33:34Got on the shoulder.
33:35He'll be all right.
33:36Did he recognize any of them?
33:39Nope.
33:41Luckily, ran across the trail of one of them before.
33:44A redhead.
33:45That redhead had to be the one that killed old Pete Redfern.
33:48Ran across the trail of another one of them.
33:50Corey tells me that he's seen him before, recognized him by his walk instead of his shoulders.
33:56Corey says he must have seen him a dozen times somewhere.
33:58Without his mask, he'd be somebody we know.
34:01Might even be a neighbor.
34:02A neighbor?
34:04I find that hard to believe, Ben.
34:07Well, I didn't want to believe it either, but we picked up that trail today.
34:12They doubled back on their tracks right down the main road.
34:17Didn't have to worry about being seen because he's seen there every day.
34:20More killings every day.
34:22That's why we're here, Denver.
34:24I spent the better part of my life as a peace officer, Ben.
34:27I was lucky.
34:29Only caught one bullet.
34:31You got it, Sheriff.
34:32You got all the men you need.
34:33Don't ask me to press my luck.
34:36You pressed it when you went out with us the other day.
34:38We're all taking the same chance.
34:40Not according to the odds.
34:42I've been riding a streak of luck for 30 years.
34:45I don't intend to press it any further.
34:47So far, they've only hit the miners and the mine payrolls.
34:51They might decide to branch out.
34:54You could be helping to put out a fire in your own house.
34:57My own house?
34:58All right.
34:59About time I started taking care of my own house.
35:02Taking care of other people's houses for 20 years.
35:04What the devil would ever get me?
35:07A hundred dollars a month.
35:08A lot of plaques on the wall.
35:10A pat on the back and a bullet on the shoulder.
35:22Denver?
35:25I had no idea you felt this way.
35:26Well, now you know.
35:28I'm sick and tired of taking care of other people's troubles.
35:32Don't you think I owe something to my own kid?
35:38Oh, well.
35:39I guess you got it right to your own way of thinking.
35:43Not going to press you.
35:47But we're going out after those killers.
35:49Come on, boys.
36:12Hey, where'll I put these?
36:18Well, it's a good thing she ran out of money.
36:20You'd have to send in the hay wagon.
36:21Oh, little Joe, you know perfectly well I needed every one of these things.
36:24I'm sure you did, Connie.
36:26Stay to supper?
36:27No, thanks.
36:28I'd better show my face around the Ponderosa.
36:30I'm going to forget I'm a member of the family and start charging me room and board.
36:33He'll change his mind.
36:34I'm going to put these things upstairs, then I'll be down to cook supper, Dad.
36:37You'd better stay, little Joe.
36:40She's a pretty good cook.
36:46Hey, you got a wonderful girl there, Mr. McKee.
36:49That's what I always wanted her to be.
36:52I, uh...
36:53I wanted to talk to you about Connie and me.
36:56Well.
37:01What's on your mind?
37:04What, sir?
37:05Connie and I have known each other for a long time.
37:09Haven't we, sir?
37:10Yes, you have.
37:11Quite a long time.
37:13And I know you've probably heard a lot of stories about...
37:17all about me and those Virginia City girls,
37:19but I just wanted you to know that they didn't mean a thing to me, not any of them.
37:22I hope you didn't tell them that at the time.
37:25Well, uh...
37:25No, no, sir, not at the time.
37:28I...
37:29Well, I'm...
37:30Anyway, that's not the way it is with Connie and me.
37:33I am very fond of her, sir.
37:35Oh, I do.
37:37And if Connie will have me, I...
37:41What I'm trying to say is, sir, I'd like to ask her to marry me.
37:46Well.
37:49I don't think there's any way I can keep you from asking her.
37:54Does that mean you'd rather I wouldn't?
37:56I don't mean that at all.
37:59All I ever wanted was for Connie to be happy.
38:03Have the chances other girls have.
38:07Sir, that's what I mean to offer her.
38:10Suppose I knew all along this had happened.
38:13I should have known.
38:15I should have known.
38:21I'm sorry I upset you, sir.
38:27You're getting on home now.
38:30Tell Connie I'll see you soon.
38:46Little Joe gone?
38:48Yeah, he just talked to me.
38:53I was hoping he would.
38:56Like that, is it?
38:58Yes, it's like that.
39:01He mentioned marriage.
39:04One thing at a time, Dad.
39:06First you fall in love.
39:08I thought you'd done that already.
39:10Uh-huh.
39:11But you have to give it time to grow.
39:14To build dreams.
39:16To be so filled with happiness and the wonder of it that you're about ready to explode.
39:20And then you get married.
39:22You're all that we talked about.
39:24Selling all this.
39:25Heading east.
39:26You were so dead set on that when you first got here.
39:28I know, but I didn't realize then.
39:31You thought you couldn't be happy out here.
39:33I didn't think so either.
39:34That's what I didn't realize.
39:36That geography has nothing to do with happiness.
39:40Oh, Dad.
39:42I know why you were talking about selling out and going east.
39:47And I'll always love you a whole lot more because you were doing it for me.
39:51But now, you know.
39:55I know.
39:58Baby, all I ever wanted for you was happiness.
40:12Well, all right.
40:12Go ahead and say it.
40:14What do you want us to say?
40:15Oh, come on, Adam.
40:16You've been walking around it like it was a rattlesnake.
40:18All right.
40:19It's somebody we know.
40:20A neighbor.
40:23Well, come on.
40:24Say the rest of it.
40:25You think Denver McKee had something to do with it?
40:27Now, nobody said that, Joe.
40:28Nobody's even thinking it.
40:29Oh, no?
40:30Now, why don't you tell me what Denver said about not wanting to help?
40:33Then you drop it so fast I could hear the thud when it hit.
40:36The only thud you hear is your heart when somebody mentions the name of McKee.
40:47Pa, what do you really think?
40:49Well, I'd stake my life that Denver had nothing to do with it.
40:53Well, I hope you're right, Pa.
40:54But we have to face the truth.
40:57There was only one man that wasn't at Connie's party the night the Silverado payroll was stolen.
41:01That's right.
41:02Miles Briscoe.
41:03Yeah.
41:04You know, when I was telling Denver about the party, Miles was with him.
41:08He said he couldn't go to the party because he had to look after things at the flying end.
41:11All right.
41:11So he wasn't at the party.
41:12Does that prove anything?
41:14No.
41:15Of course it doesn't, Joe.
41:18But it's worth looking into.
41:20Horse, why don't you ride out to the McKee place?
41:24Have a look around and if Miles leaves the ranch, trail him.
41:29How long you only stay, Pa?
41:30No.
41:31One of us will relieve you in the morning.
41:39Now, come on.
41:40Don't look so worried.
41:44Don't look so worried.
42:03Dad, hurry, Joe.
42:06That just scared me to death.
42:07You must be half-engineer.
42:08You've come up on me before I'm yet.
42:10I ain't seen anything?
42:11Not a thing.
42:12I think we wasted our time.
42:14Well, we're young, brother.
42:15We got plenty of time.
42:16Maybe so, but as slow as it went last night, I feel like I'm 90 years old already.
42:21I'm going to go get me some sleep.
42:22All right.
42:22Breakfast already.
42:23It is?
42:24Uh-huh.
42:24Then sleep's going to be the sad thing, I guess.
42:28Hey, Hux.
42:33Take a look at that.
42:40That's a red-headed man.
42:42Stranger, Miles in Denver.
42:46Go.
42:47Let's go get Paul, man.
42:48All right.
42:50I'm telling you for the last time.
42:52Don't you come around this ranch anymore.
42:55That red hair is like a lantern.
42:57You've been seen twice.
42:59Don't make any difference.
43:01The two that see me ain't done any talking.
43:03Well, you're wrong.
43:04Pete Redfern identified you before he died.
43:09And Corey, the miner you shot yesterday, he's still alive.
43:13Well, I must be out of practice.
43:15You're not out of practice.
43:16You're just out of brains.
43:17I think we ought to lay low for a while.
43:20Things quiet down.
43:21You fellas sound like you're getting a streak up your backs.
43:24You set up this play, Denver.
43:26The rest of us have been taking all the risks.
43:28Sure, we had to do a little shooting.
43:30I want you to clear out of here.
43:32You think I want my daughter to see you?
43:34No, I don't think much about your daughter one way or the other, Mr. McKee.
43:37And I'm tired of sleeping up in those rocks.
43:39You got a bunkhouse back there.
43:41I mean to use it.
44:34Good morning, Ben.
44:36Morning, Denver.
44:40You know this man?
44:41Sure he knows me, Ben.
44:43What about it?
44:44We've been looking for a red-headed man.
44:46You're the only red-headed man in the area.
44:48Other than a barber in Virginia City.
44:50Since when is being red-headed a crime?
44:53Since we found out that a redhead killed two men.
44:56Maybe two others.
45:00Do you figure to do anything about it?
45:20Dad!
45:20Dad!
45:31You take Connie back into the house
45:42Now put away your guns, boys
45:44You won't need them
45:48You're taking a lot of chances, aren't you, Ben?
45:51I could out-shoot you any day you live
45:54Maybe so
45:56There's no reason for it to come to that
46:01Denver, why?
46:03At a stake in my life, it had nothing to do with this
46:06Why?
46:07That's very simple, Ben
46:08I ran out of money
46:11I did what I had to do
46:13And I'm not backing down from it
46:15There are other ways
46:17What other ways?
46:19I did a good job as a marshal
46:22When I needed money, I turned to what I knew best
46:26I did a pretty good job at that, too
46:30Denver
46:32I'm gonna have to take you in
46:37Give me a gun
46:38No, no, Ben
46:42You got to take it
46:43Oh, he means it
46:45Yeah, Ben, I mean it
46:52No, Denver, no
47:03Denver
47:05Now, don't you go blaming yourself, Ben
47:08The man pulls a gun on you
47:10You gotta draw your own
47:13You got to pull the trick
47:32He could outdraw me any day of his life
47:38And he could shoot a lot straighter than that
47:59You sure you want to go?
48:00I have to go, Joe
48:03I have to get away
48:05I need time to think
48:07And time to forget
48:14I understand
48:18I love you
48:27I don't know
