Ben and Adam Cartwright are locked in jail and face execution for a murder they did not commit. They are convicted based on the testimony of a woman named Sally Byrnes, whose father was killed, though she did not actually see them commit the crime. Joe and Hoss try to find out why the witnesses have perjured themselves.

03:34Two hours to go.
03:42No guns in sight.
03:44That's good.
03:45If my boys weren't supposed to bring guns into town, they won't.
03:53Morning, Joe.
03:55Mars.
03:55How are you, sir?
03:56Bill.
03:57Okay, go ahead.
04:02Joe.
04:04Hi, Pa.
04:05Mars.
04:06Paul.
04:06Well, we found him, Pa.
04:10Dead.
04:14How'd he die?
04:16We found him about a hundred miles north of here.
04:19Looked like he'd fallen off of a cliff.
04:22Yeah, it was thrown off.
04:24Deuce Martin?
04:25Yes, sir.
04:26We left his body with the sheriff of its potswood.
04:30Now, there are only two witnesses to that killing.
04:32One of them's dead already.
04:34The sheriff, you know my Pa and brother are innocent.
04:36Deuce gave me a full statement.
04:38Yeah, and then he left town before the trial.
04:40Didn't much matter.
04:41Sally Burns saw it, too.
04:43And you believe her.
04:46The jury did, Joe.
04:49I'm sorry.
04:57Joe.
04:59Well, Hanson's doing a hard job the best way he can.
05:03Now, time's getting short, but we may still come out of this right side up.
05:09What do you want us to do now, Paul?
05:11Three things.
05:13Now, first off, talk to Sally Burns again.
05:17And second, help Ed Baxter.
05:20He's putting out a special edition of the newspaper.
05:23What's that going to you?
05:24It'll make people think a little bit.
05:27And I'd like you to think of the third thing, which may be our best chance.
05:31Barney Hawkins taking a petition around town.
05:34The governor will grant a stay of execution if we can wire him the names of 50 citizens,
05:40asking that our case be reconsidered.
05:43Oh, and Hawkins' men are in town, so stay clear of them.
05:46Well, we won't fool Hawkins, boys.
05:49We'd better get to give them to him.
05:50I'll kill your horses first.
05:53I heard you, coming into town fast after a long ride.
05:57A good rancher looks to his horses first.
05:59A good rancher looks to his horses first.
06:34Of course, now, on the other hand, you hang them too high, and whoosh, you know.
06:41This town's like a graveyard. What's the matter with everybody?
06:44I just don't know.
06:46Well, mostly people come from miles around to watch the neck stretching.
06:49They bring a lunch and make a day of it.
06:54There's some folks around here kind of fond of the cartwrights,
06:58who wishes there wouldn't be any hanging.
07:01It'll make Hawkins the biggest ranch in the territory.
07:04You like our boss, don't you?
07:07Sure. Sure.
07:10Just don't like to see anybody hang.
07:13Sounds to me like you ain't got no respect for the law.
07:16I'll just have to drag you out to watch it.
07:20Ask them the boss will be audience enough.
07:26Hey, you know old Ben Cartwright been reading a good book?
07:29You don't suppose he's praying for one of them miracles, do you?
07:34Shaps, here take a look around town.
07:36Shaps, here take a look around.
07:37Shaps, here take a look around town.
07:38Okay.
07:39Let's get a look around town.
07:50Or...
07:55Let's get a look.
07:56It won't be.
07:56It won't be.
07:58Let's get a look around town.
08:01Let's go.
08:01Let's go.
08:01Let's go.
08:03No.
08:03Oh, my God.
08:33Oh, my God.
09:08Oh, my God.
09:33Hey.
09:33Nobody packing a gun in the britches.
09:38Now, take care of your horse.
09:40Yeah.
09:50Hawkins sure has a lot of hired guns in time.
09:52Yeah.
09:54Easy.
09:56Get out of the way.
09:59Sure, kid.
10:01Joe, Joe, Joe.
10:05Just watch who you're calling, kid.
10:07Just take it easy, Joe.
10:16Pick up his hat.
10:25Joe, you're going to have to watch that temper, boy.
10:28Well, Hawkins better keep his men out of my way.
10:31Okay.
10:42Okay.
10:50Okay.
10:52Okay.
11:03I don't know.
11:30You open?
11:32Coffee and stew.
11:35I'll have coffee and stew.
12:21I'll have coffee and stew.
12:23Is something wrong?
12:27No, it's just that I've never seen a lonesome of town.
12:32Well, it's just that everyone's afraid to watch the Cartwrights die.
12:38Not everyone. That calendar there says someone's been counting the days.
12:48Miss Sally, ma'am, we'd like to talk to you for a minute if we could.
12:53You see, you're the only one left in town now that can save our pa and Adam.
12:58Me and Little Joe found Deuce Martin dead.
13:01Dead?
13:02Yes, ma'am.
13:04You're the only witness against them now.
13:07I told you what I saw at the trial.
13:10Sally, you've lied.
13:11No, Joe. No need for that.
13:12You were hurting a lady.
13:16I didn't mean to hurt you, Sally. I'm sorry.
13:20I just wanted you to tell the truth, that's all.
13:27We're not doing any good here. Let's go see Bonnie Ogden.
13:31Ma'am.
13:34Are you sure that nothing would cause you to change your mind?
13:40I'm not going to lie for you.
13:43I'm not going to lie for you.
14:07You and Cy Hawkins are the only men I've seen stand up to the Cartwrights.
14:14Coffee and stew are on the house.
14:19Who was killed?
14:24My father.
14:30Ben Cartwright come here one night with his son Adam.
14:34They were boiling mad.
14:36They claimed Pa had been buying Maverick, stolen off their Ponderosa.
14:40They went out back with Pa and his hard hand, Deuce Martin, were cutting wood.
14:47I could hear them arguing.
14:50And then there was a shooting.
14:56Well, if you knew what it was like to have someone killed in such a crazy way like that.
15:01I do know.
15:05I know very well.
15:06I know.
15:36Sheriff Henson sent me.
15:37Give me a nickel if I bring some stew for supper for his prisoners.
15:44All right, Jimmy.
16:21All right.
16:24All right.
16:44All right.
16:51All right.
16:54Well, my pa used it for a long time.
16:59It's yours now?
17:01Yeah.
17:09Does the town of Las City in Kansas mean anything to you?
17:13No.
17:14How do you mean?
17:17Well, have you heard of anybody around here being connected with the town in any way?
17:23No.
17:26Well, who would be the biggest ranch around here?
17:29Ben Cartwright.
17:31I thought everyone knew that.
17:33Ben Cartwright?
17:33No, I didn't know that.
17:34Is he a...
17:36Is he a tall fellow?
17:37He's big.
17:40Why?
17:41Well, he may be a fellow I'm looking for.
17:43Well, don't you know by the name?
17:47I'll know when I see his face.
18:07Hey, Shaps!
18:08Keeler!
18:09Fred says for everybody to come in and have a drink.
18:13Hey!
18:13Fred, you hear him?
18:22Nothing to worry about. Everything's under control.
18:27I'll be handling the final details.
18:32I'll do what I can to be helpful.
18:35That's very kind of you. Just how can you help us?
18:37Your throat should be clean-shaved as possible.
18:40The hemp is new and stiff.
18:41It sometimes pulls short whiskers.
18:45That can be painful.
18:48Also, your boot should fit snug.
18:51Otherwise, I may fly off.
18:54Oh, we can do without your help.
18:57I believe you mean well, friend, but...
19:00We thank you.
19:02I understand.
19:19What do you want?
19:20To see the older cartwright.
19:22What for?
19:23It's a personal matter.
19:24Sorry, but you can't...
19:29Go ahead.
19:34Lord, who is worthy to be praised.
19:37So shall I be saved from my enemies.
19:46What is it?
19:48I thought I might know you.
19:51And I don't.
19:59You seem disappointed.
20:01I am.
20:02You thought the hangman was doing you a favor?
20:06Yeah.
20:07This man you...
20:10You thought I might be.
20:14You hate him very much.
20:17Yep.
20:21Sorry I troubled you.
20:29Who is it?
20:30Me, Paul.
20:37Paul?
20:38Paul.
20:38Sonny Burns ain't gonna change what she had to say.
20:43What about the petition?
20:44Barney Ogden's probably down in the miners' flats.
20:47Little Joe's down there to fetch him now.
20:49Well, that's good.
20:49They ought to get lots of names down there.
20:51Yeah, and we're gonna need them, too.
20:53Everybody in town's holed up in their house.
20:55Hawkins.
20:57Yeah, they want to stay on his good side in case he takes over the territory.
21:01Nobody's taking over while I'm sheriff.
21:03Hanson, you're new in office here.
21:06They get rid of Pa.
21:07Hawkins will start chopping away at the Ponderosa till he's more powerful than he is now.
21:11And if you stay honest, you'll just have one problem.
21:14You'll be dead.
21:17Better get on with your talking.
21:19Time's running out.
21:21Us.
21:23I want you to work on the petition and the newspaper.
21:27But no more than that.
21:29What do you mean, no more than that, Paul?
21:31Adam and I agree.
21:34Do everything you can inside the law.
21:37But that's all.
21:38If you try to free us by force,
21:41Hawkins' men will slaughter you.
21:43Besides, you'll be coming up against these lawmen and be shooting at our friends.
21:48That's no good.
21:51You won't have to worry none, Paul.
21:53We...
21:53Hoss.
21:55I want you to promise me.
21:58No violence.
22:02Yes, sir.
22:03And try the telegraph office.
22:05Maybe Joe missed Barney.
22:06Maybe he's already got the names and sent them to the governor.
22:08Yeah, yeah, I'll check.
22:21Mr. Cartwright?
22:22Yes.
22:27I had reason to think that the man I wanted was around here.
22:32You thought I was him?
22:35Yes, but there were never two more different men in the whole world than you and my man.
22:39And I'm sorry that I bothered you.
22:43Don't worry yourself.
23:03Hey, Hope, only about an hour to go.
23:05Hawkins better get here soon.
23:07He'll sure be sore if he misses it.
23:08He won't miss it.
23:20Are you looking for something?
23:25I have a whiskey, please.
23:29You're a stranger who's been going around, ain't you?
23:38You know, Fred, he packs his gun and his britches.
23:43You reckon he'd bust a finger taking it out?
23:45Oh, Hawkins, I want no troubled bird.
23:48Not a lot for the hanging.
23:50Sure I know.
23:52I just wondered about this little fella here.
23:55You know, it could be.
23:55He's a friend of the Cartwrights.
23:57Are you, mister?
23:59Yeah.
24:01Longstanding?
24:04Ten, maybe fifteen minutes.
24:07Well, it'd be a short-lived friendship.
24:11Now, us, we're backing up law and order and justice.
24:15Seeing it, there ain't no slip-ups in that hanging.
24:23Now, you forget that for just one minute.
24:26And I'm gonna personally turn you inside out.
24:33You hear good?
24:36You're too scared to talk?
24:39Go outside and cool down, Bert.
24:53Hey, uh, Cartwright's got any friends around here?
24:58Not many.
25:04Watch it, kid.
25:06Sorry, mister.
25:07What do you got there?
25:08Stu, I gotta take you to the jail.
25:11Hey, Hoagie.
25:12Hey, Hoag, come here.
25:13Yeah.
25:15This kid's taking Stu to the jail.
25:17It must be the Cartwright's last supper.
25:20Say, what do you think we ought to do with it, Hoag?
25:23Well, let's just flavor it up a little bit.
25:25No! Stop!
25:27Well, let's just do it upright, okay?
25:30Don't! Please, mister!
25:31Come here, kid.
25:33No, please! Stop, mister!
25:50Come here, kid.
25:52Get up.
26:03That's enough.
26:05Get him inside.
26:07Move on in.
26:14We'll take care of you later, after the hanging.
26:32I'll go get more.
26:33It don't matter, man.
26:37You just finish what you started, son.
26:39Yes, sir.
26:47Who's side are you on in here?
26:50Well, I talked to your pa, and I'm just beginning to wonder about this hanging.
26:55How come?
26:57Well, it just seems to me that the wrong kind of people are in jail around here.
27:03What's for sure that my pa and my brother didn't kill Mr. Burns?
27:08Yeah, well, a lot of people around here think they're dead.
27:11Couldn't have happened.
27:12Couldn't have happened the way Sally said it did.
27:14Mr. Burns was shot from out of the dark.
27:17My pa and Adam shot back trying to save him.
27:20You mean that Sally Burns lied?
27:24No, I don't think Miss Sally lied.
27:27It was dark that night.
27:29I think she just didn't see it right.
27:31What about the fellow that saw it?
27:33Deuce Martin?
27:34He ain't no good.
27:36Could have been scared out of it or bought off or anything.
27:40Well, I hope you get that petition signed.
27:43We will.
27:45We got a special edition of the paper coming out, and that's going to help.
27:50That's good.
27:58Still talking about that petition.
28:01Something about the newspaper.
28:03Better cover ourselves.
28:18Us!
28:23He ain't with Hawkins.
28:25Yeah, who is he with then?
28:26You fellas, if you don't mind.
28:29Look, Barney ain't down at the flats.
28:31He hasn't been there.
28:31He didn't even go down there?
28:32No.
28:33We got to hurry up and find him and get that petition.
28:35We haven't got much time left.
28:36Yeah, let's try his house.
28:37Come on.
28:38Right.
28:38If nothing else works,
28:39you fellas planning on a small revolution?
28:45Yep.
28:46Well, hold off as long as you can.
28:55What do you think he's got in mind?
28:57I don't know.
28:59But if it's a revolution,
29:01I got to sneak and hunch that fella would be worth a regiment.
29:05No, we don't get the petition.
29:06We're going to need a regiment.
29:07Come on.
29:07We're going to need a regiment.
29:08Well, when Mr. Hawkins comes to town,
29:10he'll settle with his men for treating you that way.
29:12No, he won't.
29:13He won't do nothing.
29:15Well, he can't be held responsible for what his men do.
29:18As a rule, you can usually tell a man by the men around him.
29:22Now, Hawkins was forced to hire those rough men
29:24to stand up to the cartwrights.
29:29Better pull them down, Bert.
29:40I'm busy.
29:48Hawkins won't like folks reading words like that.
29:51I can't prove the cartwrights didn't murder Burns,
29:53but the Lord willing,
29:55I can help stop the hanging.
29:56I sure wish we could change your mind.
29:58I can't help you.
30:11I don't...
30:12I don't know.
30:21But I don't care.
30:22You're not afraid of telling you how to hold you.
30:28I'm thinking the wrong way.
30:33Anybody ever get their arm caught in one of these things?
30:36Fred.
30:37Looks like he's melting down some tight.
30:40I told you I'm busy.
30:45Sure is hot.
30:57I knew a fellow once who got his face pushed in some boiling lead.
31:01He sure wasn't a pretty sight.
31:06All the shades are down at Barney's house.
31:08Yeah, let's try it in here.
31:11That's funny, middle of the day, I have the shades down there.
31:17Try again.
31:28Hey, Barney, what are you doing sitting here in the dark?
31:34I'm...
31:35Hoss, I'm sorry.
31:39Where's the petition?
31:41Don't make him feel any worse than he already does.
31:43He was trying, Hoss.
31:45If you knew what they said, they'd do to him.
31:49So he quit.
31:51So he quit and he came back to hide in this house.
31:55A house you wouldn't have, Barney, if it hadn't been for my father.
31:59How many names did you get on it, Barney?
32:03Five.
32:05Five.
32:09The sheriff and deputy, the hangman and his helper, Mr. Baxter.
32:23What about your own?
32:26What about your own, Barney?
32:29They made me scratch it off.
32:32You...
32:34You don't know what they said they'd do to my daughter.
32:39Where's the petition, Barney?
32:41I'll...
32:41Little Joe and me will get signed.
32:43Look, we haven't got time for that now.
32:45Yeah, we can try.
32:47It's here.
32:54I'll light the lamp.
32:55Don't bother, Barney.
32:58I think I can see you better in the dark than I ever did in the daylight anyhow.
33:24Jason already asked me.
33:25And you wouldn't sign it?
33:27No.
33:28Max, we done tried six houses on this block and nobody would sign it.
33:30But all we need is just a few names to get the bail.
33:36Max, you don't have to be scared of nobody.
33:38I ain't scared.
33:39It's just that...
33:40Look, I don't want no part of it.
33:43One way or another.
33:44Now, now leave me be.
33:46Look, Max, if we...
33:51All right, let's get the guns.
33:52Not yet.
33:55Come on.
34:05Well, now, the way I look at it, they was tried fair and square.
34:08And I ain't one to go against a judge and jury.
34:11Now, Zeke, you know they're not guilty.
34:13Well, now, I'm sorry.
34:15But I don't know no such thing.
34:18Come on, Joe.
34:23They're still with us.
34:26Thanks a lot, Zeke.
34:33Gil, you've always been one of our best friends.
34:36It ain't fair you bringing this in here.
34:39Besides, one war name won't do no good.
34:41Look, we said we'd protect you.
34:43I know you mean that, and maybe you would.
34:47Every day of the year but one.
34:53Come on, Joe.
34:56My, you sure are working hard on that petition?
34:59You know, I'll sign it.
35:00My name's Ulysses S. Grant.
35:07I wouldn't have found you.
35:29Bless it.
35:32Thanks.
35:33So you're headed there.
35:35It's about time for Mr. Baxter's paper to be out a little bit.
35:37Let's go over and see what's keeping him.
35:39Forget it.
35:40There's no time for that paper now.
35:41If it comes to shooting...
35:43We'll do just like you said.
35:45We'll hold off till the last.
35:47Let's go.
36:04Mr. Baxter.
36:07Mr. Baxter.
36:13Mr. Baxter.
36:19It's time to get good and go of the Joe.
36:20Come on.
36:42Say, it's the boss.
36:4620 minutes to go.
