00:54Drivers on Highway 1, push to get home for the holidays, but stuck on a blind corner, a disabled
01:11utility truck, called to the scene, Jamie Davis, is on a mission to retrieve it, with swamper,

01:38A service truck has lost its back wheels, it's on an off-ramp, and on a bad corner.
01:45With drivers racing by, Jamie, takes control of the traffic.
01:56For me, this job is all about safety.
01:59We're on a bad corner, you don't have good line of sight here.

03:27Jamie and his team handle their own traffic control.

03:43But with no rear axle, they can't lift it from the front.
03:47In order to pick this thing up by the back end, the tow truck's actually got to be facing the
03:51wrong way in traffic.
03:53Signaling to drivers ahead of the corner, Jamie will block off the exit.
03:58Enabling his wrecker to drive the wrong way down the off ramp to the wreck.

04:24I could not hook up to the front of this vehicle because it's his rear that's gone.

07:06I heard there was a big wreck.
07:10The visibility is not great.
07:13A Benz towing 50 ton hurdles along Highway 1.
07:18With lead operator, Mike Topperchak.
07:22This section of highway is going to be a little bit foggy at times.
07:25That doesn't help matters.
07:27It's been a busy night up here tonight.
07:30Highway crew is trying to keep up.
07:31But there's only so much you can do on a day like this.
07:34Every available hand is out making sure the highway stays open.
07:38Mike is the operations manager for the day-to-day functions in Revelstoke.
07:44Very focused, highly skilled.
07:47Definitely the right guy.

07:58A refrigeration trailer knocked clean off its hitch.

08:06It's in the ditch.

08:08The loaded semi lost traction.

08:38But we also need to get that cargo salvage as quickly as possible especially the perishable mode like this
08:44While he waits for an unload crew
08:49The highway's foreman is determined to clear the tractor
08:54Their job is to make sure that the road is flowing as freely and smoothly as possible
09:00And we're in obstruction on that road right now. Oh, yeah ready to start pulling here
09:11Mike winches with a line to the tractors frame
09:18But the rear axles not really great it are deep in the ditch
09:24As I'm pulling I'm watching how the wrecks reacting
09:27I need to put down and re-rig somewhere better to get a better angle
09:31That's gonna be a little bit of a head-scratcher
09:39It's not pretty
09:41On Highway 1 near Revelstoke
09:45Mike from Ben's towing adds a second line
09:49Yeah, that'll work
09:51To dislodge a mangled wreck
09:58I'm going to try and bring the tractor up without bending or breaking the frame
10:03Right now the problem is just going to be getting it to the road in one piece
10:07Swapping a line to the far side
10:13Makes for a more gentle lift
10:16It's all pretty good for a buggered up unit
10:20And Mike's quick thinking
10:25It's the damaged unit back on the road

10:29They don't usually get folded up quite this bad
10:33But his tractor troubles are just getting started
10:37There's no really good way to tow a twisted truck like this
10:41It's not really much choice

10:49There's a lot of loose pieces, a lot of loose trim, loose plastic

10:55In this case the frame is also bent and cracked
10:58My biggest concern right now is that if we go down the road that crack will get worse
11:03And we'll end up with us dropping the wreck on the highway

11:09Highway's authorities urgently want the blocked lane clear
11:14In this case it needs to be off the road
11:20So we're going to truss it up the best way we can to take it away

12:59Mark's wrecker will tow the wreck half a kilometer against traffic crossing at a nearby turnaround
13:11People ain't used to seeing a truck or any other vehicle coming towards them when they're going one way and

18:06I'm 28 and originally from New Zealand
18:09I'm an engineer back home
18:11Came over here to holiday
18:14And there was this job available and
18:17Three days later I had a job
18:19Plan here is just basically get the bogeys out of the way

18:28An offload crew emptied the load of french fries
18:32Must have taken them all day to unload that trailer
18:37Now

18:53When you're starting out you don't really know the limits of the truck
18:56It's going to be the strongest I think

22:06We were towing the fifth wheel up the hill here
22:08And she just started spinning
22:10And then just slid right back

22:15It's his livelihood
22:16Thank god it only went where it did right
22:19We got to try to get this out in one piece
22:22But before John can get to work
22:24He barely fits
22:26He must find a way to get his eight foot wide record

22:32I got to lift the trailer over out of my way
22:35And then I can get around it

22:56It gives you the ability to show off your skill a little bit more

26:32What I am worried about is all the noise I'm hearing

26:38To be someone's actual home
26:40Especially with how fragile these things are
