00:05This time, on highway through hell, a near miss, as reliable under pressure, Jamie's new iron,
00:22helping the competition, and team MSA.
00:30Face an emergency.
00:31That ambulance is here!
00:37What's the traffic like going in?
00:39You can only go as hot as the guys in front of you.
00:45In western Canada,
00:47Those stretch roads like running a gauntlet this morning.
00:51Highway 1 runs deep.
00:54Be advised, we got another slowdown.
00:56Through the mountains of southeast British Columbia.
01:02In one of the few open areas of the mountain pass,
01:07lies Three Valley Gap.
01:15He went in there, gangbusters, and lost it.
01:19Must have been a little rough ride.
01:23465 kilometres from home in Abbotsford, MSA's 50-ton heavy lion heads to the scene.
01:32We got a call for a loaded tractor trailer in the ditch.
01:37At the wheel, the youngest of the Bandwait family, Gurkirit, or Gurk, with his brother, Gursimrit, or Sim.
01:46We know that the wreck is in a wetland, so we're not sure exactly what that means.
01:50So, that may be a challenge.
01:53My dad's in the moose.
01:55Their father, Kirpal, and swamper, Koljit Kang, follow in the 35-ton.
02:02We're wanting more equipment to keep the boys busy and get the business going.
02:08Our new hire, Umar, he's in our tandem bed.
02:11We'll know in a little bit what we're up against.
02:16There's a tow truck on, Steve.
02:20That's pretty bad.
02:23The MSA team gathers at a pullout just down the narrow road.
02:28We'll walk down there first, take a look, because they're going to have to shut a lane down anyways, right?
02:35Two days ago, the semi lost control, hurtling down the steep embankment.
02:43Slamming onto its side in a marsh.
02:49There is water.
02:52If this trailer is sitting in the water, it's going to be bad.
02:57Let's see.
02:59Because it's going to be full with the water.
03:03But taking a closer look...
03:05Oh, yeah.
03:06...reveals...
03:07That's all diesel here.
03:09...a bigger problem.
03:11You can smell that diesel, eh?
03:13Yeah.
03:14There's diesel in the air.
03:19Oh, boy.
03:21Yeah, it snapped you.
03:44Oh, some guy coming off the road here.
03:4735 kilometers west of Revelstoke.
03:50We have a gap on both corners here.
03:53That's perfect.
03:54Team MSA is ready to rig.
03:57We'll be able to get our straps in and do our initial pick.
04:00But a spill will require clearance.
04:04Yeah, we've just got more diesel here than we had initially anticipated.
04:08Minutes later...
04:09The way it's sitting right now, it's all just puddled up in one spot.
04:13An environmental emergency response officer...
04:16Come right here.
04:17Yeah, there's already a path going down.
04:19...is on site.
04:21Five liters or 500 liters.
04:23If it's a diesel spill, it's a diesel spill.
04:25You have to report it.
04:27It doesn't look like it's spread anywhere.
04:30No diesel, nothing in the back there.
04:32The truck couldn't have settled in a better way.
04:35With the diesel confined to a small area...
04:38They want us to recover the truck first.
04:42Then they'll start the radiation process.
04:44Okay.
04:45They get the green light to begin.
04:48We'll get our trucks pulled through.
04:49And we'll get the show on the road.
04:52Because the diesel is confined to a small area,
04:55we're going to recover the wreck, get it out of the ditch,
04:57and then we'll deal with the diesel after the fact.
05:01We've got more than enough muscle.
05:02We'll be good.
05:03We're going to try our best to work quick.
05:06Toad truck's getting ready.
05:08It's a single lane both ways.
05:11That stretch of the highway is very crucial.
05:13There's no detour anywhere near there.
05:17Toad truck's on C.
05:35250 kilometres west.
05:3810 to 1.
05:40On Highway 5.
05:42About five minutes out.
05:44Reliable towing's 35-tonne Elsa
05:47is on the move
05:49with operator John Dodds.
05:52We got a call for a rolled-over reefer trailer.
05:57Coming to a stop.
05:59It's a load of groceries and sushi.
06:06A reefer truck is broken in half
06:09deep in the ditch.
06:12The truck and trailer
06:14are completely destroyed.
06:16Half the wall is split open.
06:19With the unload crew nearly finished.
06:22Yeah, so we've got two skids left in there
06:25that still have some weight on it,
06:26so I'm just waiting for the medium-duty wrecker
06:28to get here.
06:31A 16-tonne arrives
06:33with Reliable's Jesse Manu.
06:36I might have you on this end.
06:39This is a nasty one.
06:41Start swinging this that way.
06:43This is definitely a big job
06:44without a 50-tonne.
06:46And then yard it up the hill
06:47on its side.
06:48Okay.
06:49So that it slides on the snow.
06:52We're working up about a 50-foot drop,
06:55and we're going to be fighting snow
06:57in the hill the whole way up.
06:59Duane's here.
07:01Got a tandem deck now to help out.
07:04We've got a bunch of light-duty guys
07:06helping out in the heavy division today.
07:09Reliable operator Dwayne Smith
07:11rounds out the team with a deck truck.
07:14We're going to try to land it
07:15between all the trucks.
07:17Today's going to be a bit
07:18of a learning experience.
07:21Hey, here we go.
07:23John Dodds is a unique character.
07:25He's a hard worker,
07:27needs minimal supervision,
07:29and knows his way around a tow truck.
07:32I've got to separate them.
07:34Okay.
07:34There's no way it'll come up together, so...
07:36No doubt.
07:38I'm confident that he's going to be able to help
07:40the others that don't have as much experience
07:43in learning on these big wrecks.
07:45Oh.
07:47Run this one down to that front axle.
07:49We'll bring the other one to the trailer.
07:52We'll try to swing the tractor like this
07:55while we pull up on the trailer.
07:57Okay.
07:58We're going to run this one over
08:00and that one to the back.
08:02We're going to separate the tractor if we can.
08:04The fifth wheel plate's pretty twisted,
08:06but we're going to see what we can do.
08:08No snatch block.
08:09No snatch block.
08:12What's going to be tough about this one
08:13is getting the truck detached from the trailer.
08:17Merit manager Lane Perry is also on scene.
08:22They should just give it a try right now
08:23and see if we can separate.
08:26It's very important to support each other
08:28out on the road.
08:31Okay, tighten her up.
08:38John's 35-tonne works the tractor.
08:41Think I'm good where I'm at now?
08:43As Jesse's 16-tonne.
08:45Try to straighten it out.
08:47And Dwayne's flat deck.
08:48We've got to give John boy all the help he needs.
08:51Pull on the trailer's bogeys.
08:53It's my first time really getting out there
08:55with a bunch of new guys
08:56and trying to show them how to do it.
09:00You're coming up way high.
09:02I know.
09:02Okay.
09:05I'm going to be learning a lot from him.
09:07Heads up.
09:08And we're going to work together here
09:09and get this done.
09:11Oh, he's moving it.
09:13Under John's coordination.
09:17How's that?
09:18The three wreckers.
09:20There you go.
09:22That's good.
09:23Pull the units apart.
09:25Gotta love that!
09:27We're under pressure to get this thing off the road.
09:30We've still got quite a bit of work
09:31ahead of us here.
09:33Fingers crossed.
09:37Two and a half hours east.
09:40Traffic in Three Valley Gap.
09:43We're alternating traffic.
09:45Squeezes by Team MSA.
09:51Given that the trailer is hauling mail,
09:53we're not allowed to offload it
09:55without the proper authorities.
09:57We're just going to flip it and recover it as is.
09:59Karpal's youngest son, Gurk.
10:01Without doing any damage.
10:03Takes command.
10:04You want to pull those straps out right now?
10:06Yeah.
10:07His boots are all soaked,
10:09so he's got to put the waders on.
10:12With Koljeet swamping.
10:15Okay, Koljeet, I'm going to go down.
10:17Yeah.
10:18Gurk is a good leader.
10:20Ladder, ladder!
10:22But sometimes, he's just a little bit too bossy.
10:27Oh!
10:30Okay, Koljeet.
10:32Take this strap
10:34and feed it
10:36underneath that corner there.
10:39Crossing our straps allows us
10:40to evenly distribute our weight
10:42all the way through the trailer.
10:43Make sure it's seated properly.
10:45Without causing any more damage.
10:51With the trailer's wall
10:53bearing the weight of the load,
10:55the 50-ton will take on the front.
10:58The 35-ton will cross over for the rear
11:01while also using its side puller
11:04on the tractor's drives,
11:06with the deck truck pulling on the nose.
11:11Tighten it up, Mr. Ben!
11:15Should we do this?
11:21Forced to recover
11:23the trailer loaded.
11:28Sim, let me catch up a bit!
11:32They start to roll it.
11:35Sim!
11:36Tighten up your highline a bit!
11:41Safely out of the water.
11:44This was the easy part.
11:47Getting the trailer
11:48upright without damaging it.
11:50Now we've got to get it out
11:51without damaging it.
11:53Yep!
11:54But without their lines...
11:56Keep tension!
11:57...the wreck could easily topple back over
12:00at any moment.
12:02Let's get there, I think!
12:03That's it!
12:03It's kind of a vulnerable stage
12:05in the recovery right now
12:06because this bank is very steep.
12:10Last thing we want
12:10is this trailer to go back over.
12:13They couldn't have picked a worse spot.
12:18Looked like much activity
12:19going on in there.
12:21At Three Valley Gap...
12:27MSA holds a wreck
12:29from toppling back over.
12:31I think it might be better
12:32to get my truck in the front now.
12:34But they need to reposition
12:36their wreckers.
12:38Okay, I don't think
12:39I'm going to be able
12:40to let go of my top line.
12:42To pull the semi up the bank.
12:44We're going to have to shut down
12:45both lanes then.
12:47We got it up nice and smooth.
12:48So now we're going to reposition
12:51some of the trucks
12:51and get it back onto the road.
12:56Two days ago,
12:58the semi lost control
13:01and landed in the marsh.
13:05We're going to need
13:05to shut the highway down.
13:07Now...
13:11...they need a complete closure
13:13of Highway 1.
13:15We don't want to shut the highway down,
13:16but it's really the only way
13:18to do it at the moment.
13:20With traffic stopped...
13:22I'm only on my end.
13:24...the 50-ton repositions
13:26at the rear.
13:29So I backed in
13:30and turned my truck around
13:31so that we can get the moose free.
13:33The whole road is shut down here.
13:36And once I've got all the weight
13:38on the 50-ton here,
13:39we're going to get that high line
13:41off of the moose
13:41and we're going to get all the tension
13:43on the high line of the 50.
13:46Let this line out, bro.
13:50Okay, bro, that's good for now.
13:52But as the big 50-ton takes the weight...
13:56You're not going to get more snug than that.
14:01Traffic is backing up.
14:03We have a time limit.
14:05And the clock is ticking.
14:07Clean up for masks.
14:09Let's get going.
14:11Big truck on the side.
14:15An hour north of Merritt
14:16on Highway 5.
14:19Rites are on tow trucks up there.
14:22Reliable wrestles
14:23with a destroyed trailer.
14:26Pull that way.
14:26We've got to hold tighter on it.
14:28Working with smaller wreckers...
14:30I'm going to do a high end,
14:32a low off that front end
14:33just to have more control.
14:34And a crew new to heavy recovery...
14:37Hey, I'm still learning
14:38every day of my life.
14:39If you ain't learning,
14:40you might as well get dying.
14:43John's team...
14:46starts dragging the wreck
14:47up to the road.
14:52We're close.
14:57It's coming up nice now.
14:58But as they reach the shoulder...
15:02Hey, watch out behind you, boys.
15:04They're up against a live lane.
15:08He just needs to hold it long enough
15:10for me to get my ass over more.
15:13Jesse's 16-ton
15:15squeezes in to take the weight.
15:18Can't quit now.
15:20We're at the spot.
15:21We're at that spot.
15:22Can't quit.
15:23Get her up here.
15:25I'm going to get out of the way here.
15:28Now Elsa can make room...
15:30So he'll definitely fight us.
15:32...for the arrival
15:33of a tilting trailer.
15:35We've got about an hour left
15:37to be off the road.
15:39As darkness falls,
15:41their window to finish the recovery
15:43is closing.
15:45We're at the point where
15:47we just got to get this thing
15:48pulled up onto the trailer.
15:50But the wreck
15:51may not handle another pull.
15:54It's definitely not in good shape.
15:57Right now,
15:58my biggest concern
16:00would be just
16:01the structure
16:01is gone completely.
16:03That's a hell of a park job.
16:08Both lanes are blocked.
16:10Everyone's stopped.
16:1130 minutes west of Revelstoke...
16:14As far forward as possible.
16:16Highway 1
16:17is shut down.
16:19They're just trying to clear
16:21the highway of the hangout.
16:23While MSA quickly repositions
16:26for their next pull.
16:28Okay, get me hooked up
16:29in the front now.
16:30We're going to get the moose
16:31on the front end of the truck,
16:33the 50 on the back end
16:34of the trailer,
16:35and the 40 TV kind of in the middle.
16:39Jackknife,
16:40then it'll come.
16:43With lines from the 35-ton
16:46pulling the tractor,
16:47the deck truck on the drives,
16:50and the 50-ton
16:51pulling the trailer,
16:53they'll jackknife the semi
16:55to haul it up the bank
16:57onto the rope.
17:00Because most of the weight
17:02in the trailer
17:02is at the front,
17:03we're able to jackknife
17:05the tractor
17:05and essentially make
17:06a 90-degree angle
17:07with the tractor
17:08and the trailer.
17:09Going good.
17:09Even if we were to let go,
17:11it's not going to go anywhere.
17:13That's it.
17:14Oh, yeah.
17:17Pretty sure the road's close.
17:19But as the jackknife pole
17:23starts showing progress...
17:26Got an ambulance
17:27trying hot on Iowa.
17:29How far is that ambulance, man?
17:32Word comes
17:33of an approaching ambulance.
17:36The pressure is on.
17:37We don't want to
17:39hold the ambulance.
17:42Boom up.
17:43Boom up.
17:45Just as the wreck
17:46crests the road...
17:49The ambulance.
17:49He's coming up on you
17:50pretty hard here, buddy.
17:56Yo, that ambulance is here!
17:59This recovery is important,
18:01but somebody's life
18:02is in danger.
18:03Slide your thing over
18:05if you can.
18:06Could you take that line off?
18:08It doesn't matter
18:09what we have to get
18:10this ambulance for.
18:11Hey, Kaljeet!
18:12Drop it, drop it, drop it, drop it!
18:14We have no choice.
18:16Got it!
18:18Boom down!
18:19Boom down!
18:20Boom down!
18:21Boom down!
18:24Boom in!
18:25On Highway 1...
18:26Yo, hurry up!
18:28...with their recovery...
18:30Wait, wait!
18:31...perched on the precipice...
18:33Oh, my God!
18:35Yeah, you can come up, though.
18:36You can come keep up right here.
18:38MSA must pause...
18:39Kaljeet, back me up here.
18:41Yeah.
18:42...to make way for an ambulance.
18:45Have a safe night.
18:47Now that the first responders
18:48have passed through
18:49the recovery scene,
18:51it's time to get our trucks
18:52back positioned.
18:55Take this line,
18:56and I'll do this line.
18:57Yeah.
18:58They reattach their lines
19:00to the rest.
19:01Go.
19:03Go on.
19:06As traffic is backing up...
19:09We have a lot of people
19:10waiting on us
19:11in both directions,
19:12and they can't go anywhere
19:13until we open the highway.
19:17Okay.
19:18Okay, watch your face.
19:18Yeah, give her.
19:20Give her!
19:21Give her!
19:22Give her!
19:22Give her!
19:23The moose and deck truck
19:25are pulling the tractor.
19:26Hold it there.
19:28It's working.
19:29We're almost there.
19:30We're going to get this thing out.
19:32Kaljeet, how's she looking?
19:33It's good.
19:34Give her!
19:36In recovery work,
19:37there's always pressure.
19:39Hold it!
19:40And you've got to get it out of there
19:41as quick as possible.
19:42It's sitting perfectly
19:44on the asphalt.
19:45With traffic still stopped...
19:47Any idea how long
19:48it's going to be down?
19:49...and their 15-minute
19:51closure window done.
19:53Should be clear shortly, hopefully.
19:57They work quickly
19:58to open a lane.
20:00Just drop it.
20:01Let me move my truck forward.
20:05Sam will use moose.
20:08Okay, hook one of our lines up.
20:10I'm just going to drag this thing.
20:12Tell him to drive.
20:14To drag the rest of the wreck
20:16onto the road.
20:22I say just unhook the tractor right here.
20:25Okay, sure.
20:28Get this one lane open
20:29for alternating traffic,
20:31and we're going to hook up
20:32and get out of here.
20:34MSA clears the far lane
20:36and traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway.
20:40They're backing it up.
20:41No, we're moving now.
20:43Up here.
20:43It is finally rolling again.
20:47The wreck is out.
20:48We have a proper environmental team
20:51lined up to come clean up the fuel spill.
20:53Go up!
20:57Like I said,
20:59we'll be home in time for dinner tomorrow.
21:01Not tonight.
21:04It was a tough job,
21:06and it was dirty,
21:08but we did it.
21:10At the end of the day,
21:12we got the job done,
21:13so everybody's happy.
21:15Teamwork makes the dream work.
21:16Yeah.
21:18We're getting ready to go, yeah?
21:21Bye, you're done.
21:21Good night.
21:24There's more.
21:28There are still crews
21:30working on the highway.
21:31High on the Coquihalla.
21:34Lower down.
21:35North of Merritt.
21:37Hook your line to it,
21:38and we'll start stocking it
21:39while I pull it over.
21:42Team Reliable
21:43must winch a demolished wreck
21:45onto a tilting trailer.
21:48All right, here we go.
21:50While they're pulling it up
21:51with the winch,
21:52I'm just keeping it straight
21:53on the trailer
21:54and helping it go up
21:55a little bit better.
21:57Keep it going!
22:00But the frame
22:02is biting.
22:03Digging into the trailer.
22:06Quite a bit of load
22:07still in the front.
22:09We're fighting it a bit.
22:10And the trailer's winch
22:13is struggling.
22:14They don't have
22:15a huge winch on it.
22:19John moves in
22:20to lift the corner.
22:22So we're just going to have
22:24to assist it a little bit
22:24with 35 tonne
22:26and see if we can't get it up.
22:27Well, I'm just going to hook
22:28another truck to the back
22:29now that I'm up front
22:30lifting it.
22:31Okay.
22:33Jesse moves in
22:34to secure the wreck
22:35with the 16 tonne.
22:37It's not too heavy,
22:39but it's quite a mess.
22:41All right, here we go.
22:47They fall again.
22:49Just a little bit
22:50though at a time, right?
22:52And the wreck
22:53inches onto
22:55the tilting trailer.
22:57Okay, how's that side looking?
22:59We're doing okay.
23:01We got an accident here.
23:03Pull her down.
23:04To speed the process up.
23:07Okay, let me unhook.
23:08Yeah.
23:09And move to the front
23:11because I can drag the front.
23:13John will try a new tactic.
23:17I'm going to hook a line up
23:19and try to drag backwards
23:22while he's winching
23:23the trailer forwards.
23:25He'll pull the tilting trailer
23:28under the wreck.
23:30It's not something
23:31I've ever done.
23:33In this situation,
23:34the winch just isn't cutting it.
23:36So we've got to do
23:37what we've got to do.
23:39Try now.
23:46But the wreck
23:49Hold up, hold up!
23:51We just split.
23:52Hold on!
23:53Is at its breaking point.
23:55We're going to rip the floor
23:56right here in half.
23:58It's definitely not
23:59in good shape.
24:02Okay, suck on it a little bit.
24:06He's ripping the wheels
24:07out of it.
24:10Watch yourself!
24:13On Highway 5...
24:15What's going on, buddy?
24:17Reliable's recovery
24:18is coming apart.
24:20He's ripping the wheels
24:21out of it.
24:22But it's all part...
24:24I know.
24:24...of John's plan.
24:26Gotta love that.
24:28All right, I'll just
24:29take saw in here.
24:30Get rid of all these lines.
24:32Okay.
24:36In this situation,
24:37the trailer was already
24:38a write-off anyways.
24:40We're just going to rip
24:41the bogeys right out
24:42the bottom end of the floor.
24:43Toe them back separate
24:45and it'll be a lot safer.
24:47Looks good to me.
24:48It's a pretty big
24:49learning curve.
24:49There's a couple techniques
24:50we learned today
24:51that I probably wouldn't
24:53have learned anywhere else.
24:55With the bogeys cut free...
24:57I'm going to get it ready
24:58for transport here.
25:00Lane preps the trailer.
25:03We're just going to
25:04take it down
25:05to the next exit
25:06and clean it up
25:07and get it ready
25:07to get back
25:09to our home base.
25:12The longer we're in a lane,
25:13the longer we're hazards
25:15to other drivers
25:16on the road as well.
25:17I'm just going to flop it
25:18and tow it back.
25:21Using the 16-ton...
25:23What do you want me?
25:24We're going to hook you
25:25on the front axle.
25:26And Elsa...
25:27on the rear...
25:29Okay, load her up.
25:31...inches from a live lane.
25:35Okay, let it off.
25:37Okay, everybody watch your heads.
25:40John...
25:43rolls the bogeys.
25:45Okay, hook it up.
25:47Get him out of here.
25:48Just watch behind you.
25:50I'm always concerned
25:53working next to
25:54a live lane.
25:57I really wish people
25:59would get the fact
25:59that we're just trying
26:01to do a job
26:04and get the road back open.
26:07Incoming!
26:11Accident almost happened
26:12right beside us.
26:13Oh my God!
26:15John's seen enough.
26:17Just time to get this thing
26:18loaded and get caught.
26:20And pulls his team...
26:22If you're loaded,
26:23get out of here.
26:24Thanks, boys.
26:25...for the night.
26:26Yeah, you're perfect, buddy.
26:28Hard part's over, at least.
26:30Tractor, we're going to have
26:31to come back for it tomorrow.
26:33Pretty good, told one.
26:49The next day,
26:52300 kilometers southwest
26:54in the Fraser Valley...
26:56Today, my dad wanted
26:58a day off from towing.
27:00Quiring Towing's Big Green
27:01is on the move.
27:03Told me to take his record.
27:05We've got a small project.
27:06But it's Al's son,
27:08Kerry Quiring,
27:09behind the wheel.
27:11Not every day is a tow day.
27:13It's been very sporadic.
27:16So we do get creative
27:17with the work
27:17that we are finding.
27:19Today's job brings him
27:21to a surprising location
27:22in Hope.
27:24It looks like he's
27:24driving Al's truck today.
27:25As Kerry arrives
27:27at the Jamie Davis yard.
27:31Today, we have a small job
27:33helping take a cement drum
27:34off of a truck
27:35that he has to tow.
27:37The concrete truck
27:38took significant damage
27:40when the driver rolled it.
27:42How you doing?
27:43Good, man.
27:44Good.
27:44Nice to see you.
27:45Our families have been
27:46competition since birth.
27:49Competitors for decades.
27:51These three bolts
27:52on both sides?
27:53Okay.
27:54Today is a team-up
27:56between the two
27:57legendary towing families.
28:00I can't recall a job
28:02I've actually worked
28:03alongside with Jamie.
28:04Take that hydraulic tank off?
28:06Mm-hmm.
28:08And here he is
28:09helping me
28:09to help my customer.
28:11It's going to be a good day.
28:13Okay.
28:14We just help each other out
28:15and it's a good
28:16positive environment.
28:19Kerry will disconnect
28:20the drum.
28:21And then we'll just
28:22wrap a chain somehow.
28:23I've got big straps.
28:26Which is filled
28:27with hardened cement.
28:29I'm going by how
28:31Dad's got a diagram
28:32on the tow truck.
28:33Oh, does he?
28:34Yeah.
28:36We estimate the weight
28:38of that to be
28:38around 55,000 pounds.
28:41The hardest part
28:42is getting out
28:42of that hopper.
28:43Is it?
28:44It takes a special machine
28:46to lift a load
28:47this heavy.
28:49Pretty big weight there,
28:5055,000 pounds.
28:52So it's not a light load
28:53what's going on there.
28:56Jamie's rolling out
28:58his newest secret weapon.
29:05A Kershaw railway wrecker
29:08he's named
29:10Chromio.
29:12In the last few years
29:13I've been buying
29:14older railway wreckers.
29:17If you put a railway wrecker
29:19beside a rotator
29:20they just outlift
29:22and outwork
29:23the rotator
29:24every day of the week.
29:26Today
29:27Jamie's newest iron
29:29will be put
29:30to the test.
29:32I don't think
29:33I've lifted a cement drum
29:34loaded before
29:36so
29:36this is a first for me
29:38and it's a first
29:39for Chromio.
29:40If it works
29:41it works.
29:43If it don't
29:44well
29:45you got egg
29:45on your face.
29:51In hope
29:52Jamie positions
29:53his newest
29:54railway record.
30:01It looks good though
30:02Jamie.
30:03Pretty looking crane
30:05so we call it
30:05Chromio.
30:06Chromio?
30:07Yep.
30:11Chromio
30:12is Jamie's
30:13second railway record.
30:14We need the paint job.
30:16Thread all crusty.
30:17Last season
30:17he added crusty
30:19and it's 125 ton lift
30:21capacity to his fleet.
30:22Go down.
30:24Okay.
30:25I guess we're good to go.
30:29Chromio
30:30is even more powerful
30:31with a capacity
30:33of 130 tons.
30:36This machine's
30:37pretty cool.
30:38Even Jamie's son
30:40James
30:40has come out
30:42to help
30:42with the inaugural job.
30:44It's got
30:45high lifting capacity
30:46probably highest we have
30:48so it's good to
30:49test it out.
30:51Lifting the 55,000 pound
30:54cement drum
30:55will be its first test.
30:58Chromio can lift
30:59130 tons
31:00or 260,000 pounds.
31:02So get this off
31:04for this side.
31:05Really is the perfect
31:06job for Chromio.
31:09But first
31:09they need to balance
31:11the machine.
31:12Little ones here
31:13big ones on that end.
31:15Jamie's newest hire
31:16Maxim
31:17Chamberlain Norman
31:18is also training
31:19on Chromio.
31:21It's the best place.
31:22One pad on this side
31:23one pad on that side.
31:25If I can do the job here
31:26I can do it
31:27everywhere else.
31:29We just have to
31:30balance it a little.
31:32They raise the crane.
31:34We've got to make sure
31:35we get it really close
31:36to level.
31:37And level the legs
31:38for stability.
31:40Yeah right there.
31:41Okay let's shoot her down.
31:44So I got the three
31:45bolts off.
31:46With the drum detached.
31:49On the hook James.
31:51They rigged straps
31:52for the lift.
31:53Okay.
31:54This is like a big egg.
31:56And the challenges
31:57really are to try
31:58to find the right
31:59lifting points.
32:00Then we'll pass you
32:01this sir James.
32:02You reach.
32:03Pull it through.
32:05Each strap
32:06has a capacity
32:07of 80,000 pounds.
32:11Okay pull the slack.
32:12Rigging has to be
32:13just right
32:14to make this happen
32:15and to make it safe.
32:17Okay.
32:21Yeah we're ready.
32:23Good to go?
32:24Yeah.
32:26Lift off Jamie.
32:32We looking okay?
32:34It's a bunch of weight.
32:36Okay.
32:39Yes sir.
32:43Nice.
32:44With the slippery
32:4555,000 pound drum
32:48suspended 20 feet
32:50in the air.
32:51Stand right here.
32:53Okay.
32:53And to make sure
32:54I don't hit that okay.
32:56Alright.
32:57Just look at my mirror.
32:58Terry uses big green.
33:01You're ready to run.
33:03Go.
33:03To move the cement truck.
33:07Out from underneath.
33:17Stand back James.
33:21I'm feeling my oats right now.
33:23You know like I'm feeling
33:24pretty positive.
33:27Go down.
33:30Once I'm lowering that down
33:32and we're putting it down
33:33on the downage
33:33it's like yeah
33:35this is a good machine.
33:38It went as planned
33:42with Romeo here
33:43and Super James.
33:46Jamie is great
33:48ear to ear.
33:49You know like
33:50I don't blame him.
33:52Jamie has always
33:52loved his toys.
33:55If we can get it up
33:56all the way
33:57and latch it even.
33:58The last task
33:59is getting the truck
34:01ready to be towed.
34:03Beautiful.
34:04You know he's
34:05seen me grow up.
34:06It's nice to have
34:07that friendship.
34:09Yes at the end of the day
34:10we are competitors
34:11but
34:12I appreciate Jamie's help.
34:14Kerry will come back
34:16for the drum
34:16another day.
34:18Alright you're good to go?
34:19Yeah thank you Jamie.
34:20Yeah no problem
34:21I'll click the gate for you.
34:22Yeah.
34:23It's a successful team up
34:25between Jamie Davis
34:26and Quiring Tully.
34:29And for Jamie
34:30another bold move
34:32into the world
34:33of railway wreckers.
34:35The advantages
34:36of having a railway wrecker
34:38is you have
34:38a more economical machine
34:40huge lifting capacity
34:42they're a good tool
34:44for us in our toolbox.
34:53An hour and a half north.
34:55There you go.
34:57John Dodds
34:58is back on highway 5.
35:00Getting this tractor
35:02pulled out of here.
35:03With team reliable.
35:05We got the new guys
35:06back out today.
35:07They're going to be able
35:08to finish the job
35:09that they started.
35:14Okay hold the weight.
35:15Tighten up.
35:19I'm just going to get
35:20Dwayne to hook the front end
35:22and drag it over.
35:25Now
35:25in the safety of daylight
35:27John leads his team
35:29to wrap up
35:30the tough recovery.
35:33Alrighty
35:34tighten her up.
35:37come on baby
35:40come on baby
35:42I'm proud of the guys
35:44I just don't want it
35:45to roll right
35:46for being out here
35:47and doing their best.
35:49Let yours out
35:53come on
35:53fuck ya
35:56Reliable's
35:56two day recovery
35:57is nearly done.
36:00So that went pretty good
36:02all in all
36:03tractor's out of the ditch
36:05and we're out of here.
36:08John did great
36:09coordinating it
36:10I'm really proud
36:11of what my team accomplished.
36:13Alrighty guys
36:14we'll see you at the yard.
36:15I think they did a great job.
36:17Good job team
36:18reliable.
36:20Thank you much
36:23be safe out there.
36:29Six hours north
36:31That storm's supposed
36:32to come in here
36:33a little bit later
36:34huh?
36:35That's what I heard.
36:39An auto
36:40two ton
36:40heads out
36:41to a recovery
36:42on highway 97
36:44We're gonna try
36:45and get this car
36:46down as quick
36:47as we can.
36:48With operator
36:49Kyle Langlois
36:51We're calling
36:52for 10 centimeters
36:53of snow tonight
36:54so we want
36:55to try
36:55and get out
36:56of there
36:56before that
36:56snowstorm
36:57starts coming in.
36:58Following in
36:59a deck truck
37:00A small SUV
37:02flipped off
37:03the road
37:04down a
37:05very big
37:05embankment
37:07Kyle's older
37:08brother
37:08Paul
37:10Highway 97
37:11north of
37:11Cornell
37:13That is an ugly
37:14road.
37:15If it gets
37:16weather
37:16it changes
37:18fast.
37:19Paul is back
37:20after taking
37:21a break
37:22from the
37:23towing industry.
37:24Business has
37:25been good.
37:25Paul's come
37:26back.
37:26He wants to
37:27try and give
37:27it a shot
37:28again.
37:28See how it
37:29goes for
37:30himself.
37:31It helps
37:31us big
37:32time.
37:34They're
37:35setting up
37:35cones
37:35for recovery.
37:38Pulling up
37:39on scene.
37:40We notice
37:41the car
37:41it's quite
37:42a ways
37:42down
37:42in the
37:43ditch.
37:48It's a
37:49little
37:49steeper
37:49than
37:49the
37:50pictures
37:51that I
37:51got
37:51so
37:52it's
37:52time
37:53to
37:53get
37:53back
37:53in
37:53shape
37:53for
37:54the
37:54winter.
37:55We deal
37:56with so
37:57much
37:57seriousness
37:58out there
37:58when we're
37:59in an
38:00environment
38:01like we
38:01are in
38:02this
38:02scene.
38:02You know
38:03we can
38:03play around
38:04a little
38:04bit
38:05more.
38:05Good?
38:06Alright.
38:07That hill
38:08is so
38:09steep.
38:11I just
38:12want to
38:12throw a
38:13hook
38:13on that
38:13thing
38:13and we
38:14get her
38:15out of
38:15there.
38:21Ooh.
38:22The cable
38:22stuck on
38:23me.
38:23That
38:24just
38:24became
38:24interesting.
38:26My
38:27brother and
38:27I get
38:27to work
38:28together.
38:28It's
38:28almost
38:28like our
38:29childhood
38:29comes
38:29out
38:30in us
38:30sometimes.
38:31The
38:31cable
38:32almost

38:59edge
38:59of
38:59the
38:59bank
38:59where
39:00she
39:00came
39:00off.
39:01She
39:02would
39:02have
39:02done
39:02a
39:03barrel
39:03roll
39:03in
39:04the
39:04air.
39:06She's
39:07very
39:07lucky
39:07to
39:08walk
39:09away
39:09from
39:09something
39:10like
39:10that.
39:14They
39:14rank
39:14low
39:15for
39:15a
39:15reverse
39:16roll.
39:18This
39:18side
39:19I
39:19rigged
39:19down
39:19to
39:19the
39:19tire.
39:21The
39:21lowest
39:22point
39:22that
39:22it's
39:22got
39:23right
39:23now.
39:27You
39:27good?
39:29All right.
39:30We're going
39:30back up
39:31or around?
39:31I'm
39:32going
39:32up.
39:32Going
39:32up.
39:33You
39:33going
39:33to
39:33stay
39:34down
39:34here
39:34to
39:34watch
39:34it
39:34just
39:35in case
39:35I
39:35need
39:35to
39:35re-hook?
39:36Yeah,
39:36I
39:36can
39:36do
39:37that.
39:37Okay.
39:38Kyle,
39:38heads
39:38up
39:39the
39:39slope.
39:41Oh,
39:42this is
39:42going to
39:42be fun.
39:43To
39:44operate
39:44from the
39:44road.
39:45It's
39:46called
39:46a
39:46reverse
39:46roll.
39:47We
39:47roll it
39:47the
39:48other
39:48way,
39:48away from
39:49us,
39:50rather than
39:50rolling it
39:50towards
39:51us.
39:58The
39:59roll
39:59reveals more
40:01carnage
40:01crash.
40:01of the
40:02crash.
40:06What
40:06do you
40:06think
40:06if we
40:07put
40:07both
40:07on the
40:08front,
40:08Paul?
40:09It would
40:09be a
40:09good idea
40:10because you
40:10got a
40:11tree down
40:12in front
40:12of it.
40:13That way
40:13it will
40:13come up
40:14and over.
40:15Just
40:16disconnect
40:16the green
40:17one,
40:17leave that
40:17chain
40:18hooked
40:18up.
40:19Yeah,
40:19yeah.
40:22See how
40:23he does
40:23here.
40:28But as
40:28Paul
40:29climbs
40:29out
40:29of the
40:30crash
40:30scene.
40:32It's
40:32like a
40:32battlefield
40:33out there
40:34on some
40:34accidents.
40:36He's
40:36reminded
40:37of why
40:38he took
40:38a break
40:39from the
40:39family
40:40business
40:40five
40:41years
40:41ago.
40:42I
40:43was
40:43first
40:43on call
40:44for
40:44fatalities,
40:46rescuing
40:47bodies.
40:50I've
40:50seen
40:50things
40:51that
40:51you
40:52just
40:52don't
40:52want
40:52to
40:52see.
40:54Your
40:55body
40:56just
40:57says
40:57time's
40:58up.
40:59You
41:00can only
41:00deal
41:00with
41:00so
41:01much.
41:04Suffering
41:05from
41:06PTSD.
41:09I
41:10had
41:10a
41:12breakdown.
41:15Paul
41:16stepped
41:16away
41:17from
41:17towing.
41:20Coming
41:21back,
41:21I really
41:22had to
41:22put my
41:23problems
41:23aside.
41:24I know
41:25they exist.
41:26They're
41:27always there.
41:28That's
41:29what the
41:29time took
41:30me to
41:30realize,
41:31was that
41:31my problems
41:33are always
41:33going to
41:34exist.
41:35It's just
41:35now I'm
41:37able to
41:37carry on
41:38with them
41:38and I'm
41:39happy that
41:40I can be
41:41back with
41:41the family
41:42working
41:42again.
41:44Yeah,
41:45she's good.
41:47She's good.
41:50that pulled
41:51out really
41:51good.
41:52Kind of
41:53went the
41:53way I
41:53wanted it
41:54to go.
41:54So now
41:55I'm going
41:55to get
41:55out of
41:56the way.
41:56Paul's
41:56going to
41:57get it
41:57on the
41:57deck
41:57truck.
41:58We're
41:58going to
41:59get out
41:59of here.
42:01Last
42:02step.
42:03Paul and
42:04I both
42:04grew up
42:05doing the
42:05same
42:05thing.
42:06You know,
42:07helping
42:07grandpa
42:08when we
42:08were younger
42:08and going
42:09out on
42:09wrecks
42:09with him.
42:10So if
42:11him and
42:11I can
42:12continue
42:12on to
42:13be able
42:13to work
42:14side by
42:14side and
42:15see the
42:16future
42:16together,
42:17I think
42:17it would
42:17be a
42:18pretty
42:18cool
42:18opportunity.
42:24Yeah,
42:25let's get
42:25her out
42:26of here.

42:31nice to
42:32work with
42:32Kyle again.

42:35good.

42:44gotta do
42:44to keep

43:08old
43:08friend.
