00:05From 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York, it's Late Night with Seth Meyers.
00:12Tonight, Nick Jonas, star of what we did before our off days, Akron comedian John Early.
00:18An all-new Glosser look.
00:25And now, Seth Meyers.
00:28Good evening, everybody. I'm Seth Meyers. This is Late Night. We hope you're doing well.
00:32And now, if you don't mind, we are going to get to the news.
00:35The National Prayer Breakfast was held this morning in Washington, and attendees included
00:39President Trump and singer Jelly Roll. Just wish I could have been there when Trump found
00:44out it was the singer Jelly Roll.
00:47Well, this breakfast sucks.
00:51During his remarks this morning at the National Prayer Breakfast, President Trump said that
00:55he has done a lot for religion, and added, quote,
01:02Well, he definitely has a lot more people saying, Jesus Christ.
01:08President Trump also said he was a very good student, but added,
01:12Yeah, that's not a brag.
01:15I'm very smart, but you wouldn't know it from the way I act and talk and think.
01:22During his remarks this morning at the National Prayer Breakfast,
01:25President Trump said that the soldiers in Washington, D.C., quote,
01:29Man, if that's the way he talks at the prayer breakfast,
01:32I can't imagine what he said at the National Violence Breakfast.
01:38President Trump also said this morning that he bombed ISIS fighters on Christmas Day.
01:42It's the worst birthday present Jesus has gotten since the frankincense.
01:53I got nervous about saying frankincense, so I said worth.
01:58President Trump also discussed the 2024 election and added, quote,
02:02I had to win. I needed it for my own ego.
02:05Whoa, sounds like someone's finally in therapy.
02:09His next speech is going to start with,
02:11I need this applause because my daddy didn't love me.
02:16President Trump held an event tonight to unveil a new website
02:20where consumers can purchase prescription drugs at a reduced cost.
02:24It's called Canada.com.
02:28That's right.
02:29President Trump unveiled his new Trump Rx website
02:32and centers for Medicare,
02:34and with centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator,
02:37Dr. Mehmet Oz.
02:38Man, if you had told me 25 years ago
02:40that I could buy drugs online from a guy named Oz,
02:45I would have said,
02:46I'm doing that right now.
02:50During an Oval Office signing ceremony this week,
02:53Senator Lindsey Graham described
02:54President Trump's second term as, quote,
02:57Reagan plus, plus what?
02:59Ambien?
03:02Vice President J.D. Vance arrived today in Italy
03:04for the Olympic Games,
03:06and who better to stand there
03:07and watch America go downhill?
03:11The Wall Street Journal published an article last week
03:14about Cracker Barrel's business travel policies,
03:17which include requiring employees
03:19to eat at one of the chain's locations
03:21for all or the majority of their meals.
03:24I guess that way,
03:25they don't have to worry about paying their pensions.
03:32In hindsight, I understand how that joke went.
03:38Yeah, you know, I don't know what I thought.
03:40Yeah, woo!
03:43Yeah, we got him!
03:47And finally, the LGBTQ dating app Grindr
03:50announced this week
03:51that it will increase privacy tools
03:53for athletes in the Olympic Village in Italy.
03:55Great news for the bi-athletes.
04:01That was a monologue, everybody.
04:03We've got a great job for you tonight.
04:06He's a terrific musician and actor.
04:09He's here on Sunday Best Breakfast Friday.
04:12Our friend Nick Jonas is back on the show.
04:17And he is a very funny comedian and actor.
04:20You know from Would It Kill You to Laugh?
04:22Search Party and the film Eternity,
04:24he is currently performing in what we did
04:27before our Moth Days
04:28at the Greenwich House Theater in New York.
04:30John Early is also joining us.
04:32It's going to see John every time he's here
04:34before we get to all that.
04:38Donald Trump berated CNN anchor Caitlin Collins
04:41for not smiling
04:42while she asked a question about the Jeffrey Epstein scandal
04:45and made fun of praying
04:46at the National Prayer Breakfast.
04:48For more on this, it's time for A Closer Look.
04:54Trump spoke at the National Prayer Breakfast this morning,
04:57which is supposed to be a normal, nonpartisan event.
05:00But, of course, Donald Trump is incapable of being normal.
05:02I mean, he's also incapable of being nonpartisan,
05:05incapable of praying,
05:06and I bet he's bad at breakfast, too.
05:08I know.
05:09I know it's the most important meal of the day,
05:11but everything about Donald Trump screams,
05:13I'm going to wait and have a big lunch.
05:16That's why he's such a bloated sourpuss every day at four.
05:19He just crushed a massive lunch.
05:22And then he's like,
05:23I'm pretty full, might take a nap.
05:24And they're like,
05:25Well, Mr. President, you have a full schedule.
05:26And then he's like, Why?
05:27And then you're like,
05:28Because you're the president.
05:29And he's like,
05:30Ugh!
05:31But still, it would be nice if he could be normal.
05:34At this point, it would be shocking
05:35if Trump showed up to a public event
05:37wearing a suit that fits in a tie
05:39that was an appropriate length
05:40with his hair combed neatly to the side
05:42and his skin a normal human color
05:44and got through a full 90-minute speech
05:47without mentioning how much he hates windmills
05:49or toilets that don't flush.
05:51I would say,
05:51It show's over.
05:52Let's go home.
05:54In fact, I think that's what would finally drive me insane.
05:57You know, an ironic twist of fate.
05:59I would start showing up here
06:00with my hair a mess slathered in orange makeup,
06:02and I'd be all grumpy
06:04because I was the one who just had a big lunch.
06:06I'd be like,
06:06Welcome to late night.
06:08Let's get to the news.
06:09The news.
06:09We're doing the news.
06:10Oh.
06:12The point is,
06:13Trump couldn't help himself.
06:14He just had to show up
06:16to the national prayer breakfast
06:17and make it weird.
06:19You know, Mike Johnson's a very religious person.
06:22And he does not hide it.
06:24He'll say to me sometimes at lunch,
06:26Sir, may we pray?
06:29Say, excuse me?
06:30We're having lunch.
06:32We're having lunch,
06:32the most important meal of the day.
06:35Tied with dinner.
06:37You're making fun of someone
06:39for praying at a prayer breakfast?
06:41Did you also burn him for eating breakfast?
06:45He ordered an omelet, and I said,
06:46Are you sure about that, Mike?
06:47Just FYI, that came out of a chicken's butthole.
06:52Trump just revealed at a prayer breakfast
06:54that he is unfamiliar with the concept
06:56of praying before a meal.
06:58Now, I'm not religious at all,
06:59and even I know that if I sit down
07:01with someone who is,
07:01they might want to say grace first.
07:03And when they do,
07:04I know it would be rude to say,
07:06Mind if you wait until after lunch?
07:09And I'm gone, weirdo?
07:12In fact, not only is Johnson cool
07:14with Trump's prayer jokes,
07:15he's also cool with Trump
07:17shrugging off the Epstein scandal.
07:18On the Epstein files,
07:19you talked about Democrats
07:20who were in there.
07:21Elon Musk was also in there,
07:22and so was your Commerce Secretary,
07:23Howard Lutnick,
07:24and correspondents that he had with him.
07:26Did you read those new files
07:27that were published
07:28by the Department of Justice?
07:29I have a lot of things I'm doing,
07:31you know, a lot of things I'm doing.
07:33I don't know.
07:34You mentioned two names.
07:35I'm sure they're fine.
07:36I'm sure they're fine.
07:38Otherwise, it would have been major headlines.
07:40Oh, there were.
07:43I mean, maybe they weren't major headlines
07:45on Fox News or Godless Weirdos Weekly
07:47or whatever you read,
07:48but they were major headlines.
07:50Lutnick and Musk both claim
07:52to have kept their distance from Epstein,
07:54but the emails show the opposite.
07:55Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick
07:57arranged a visit to Epstein's island
07:58with his wife and children in 2012,
08:01after which Epstein passed along
08:02this message to Lutnick.
08:04Nice seeing you.
08:05In a number of emails,
08:06Musk and Epstein seem to be discussing
08:08plans for Musk to visit
08:09Epstein's private island in the Caribbean.
08:12In one 2012 email, Musk asking,
08:15what day night will be the wildest party
08:17on your island?
08:18All right, first of all,
08:19if Elon Musk ever asks,
08:20when's the wildest party at your place,
08:22the answer is,
08:22oh, man, you just missed it.
08:25And now I'm tearing my house down
08:27and moving.
08:28Sorry.
08:30My guess is Elon showing up to a party
08:32immediately kills the vibe.
08:33Dude probably shows up
08:34in his white Morpheus outfit,
08:35and when someone says,
08:37how should we cut up the cocaine?
08:38Elon says, I have an idea.
08:40Train saw!
08:43And that's when everyone else says,
08:44you know what?
08:45I think I'm going to head out.
08:46Yeah, yeah, no, I know we're on a private island,
08:48but I think I'm just going to swim for it.
08:50But Trump seems unconcerned.
08:52The exchange continued,
08:53and Trump suggested maybe it's time
08:55we all just move on.
08:57A lot of women who are survivors of Epstein's
09:00are unhappy with those redactions that came out.
09:02Some of them,
09:03entire witness interviews are totally blacked out.
09:05Do you think that they should be more transparent?
09:07They thought they released too much.
09:08You know, I heard that,
09:09and you're telling me something else.
09:11No.
09:13I think it's really time for the country
09:14to get on to something else, really.
09:16You know, now that nothing came out about me,
09:19other than there was a conspiracy against me,
09:23literally, by Epstein and other people.
09:25But I think it's time now for the country
09:27to maybe get on to something else.
09:30Oh, we should get on to something else?
09:33Yeah, man, you're right.
09:34All these wealthy and powerful people
09:35were emailing nonstop with a guy
09:37who had a private sex island,
09:38including a dental chair
09:39and a hatch that led directly to the sea.
09:42It's boring.
09:44Seriously, what do you mean get on to something else?
09:46Do you have something more important
09:47you want to talk about,
09:48like the two dozen photos you posted
09:50about the bathroom you renovated in the White House?
09:53That's real.
09:53This guy posted multiple times
09:55about a bathroom he remodeled in the White House,
09:58but he thinks we all need to move on
10:00from the international sex trafficking ring
10:02run by his former wingman.
10:05The New York Times says
10:06there are more than 38,000 references to Trump,
10:08his wife, his Mar-a-Lago club,
10:10and other related words and phrases.
10:11Trump's name is mentioned more often in these files
10:14than my name is mentioned in the credits of my own show.
10:18It's three times.
10:19I have a writer credit, a producer credit,
10:21and it also says wardrobe provided by clothes
10:23Seth's wife won't let him keep it home.
10:25She says I have too many plaid shirts,
10:27so instead of wearing them at home,
10:28I have to wear them on the show.
10:29I mean, look at that.
10:31It's like Mumford had way more sons than you thought.
10:36But CNN's Caitlin Collins admirably pressed on
10:39for an answer about the Epstein scandal,
10:41and that's when Trump got testy.
10:43But what would you say to people
10:43who feel like they haven't gotten justice, Mr. President?
10:46Something that people care about.
10:47Yeah, what did you say?
10:48Go ahead, CNN.
10:48What would you say to the survivors
10:50who feel like they haven't gotten justice?
10:52You are the worst reporter.
10:53No one to see.
10:53CNN has no ratings because of people like you.
10:56You know, she's a young woman.
10:57I don't think I've ever seen you smile.
10:59I've known you for 10 years.
11:01I don't think I've ever seen a smile on your face.
11:03Well, I'm asking you about survivors
11:04of Jeffrey Upstates, Mr. President.
11:06You know why you're not smiling?
11:06Because she's not a sociopath?
11:10She's asking you about a notorious sex trafficking ring
11:12that the world's wealthiest
11:14and most powerful people are connected to.
11:15It's not her fault you're in a bad mood
11:17because the grilled cheese you ate for lunch
11:19is bumping up against the hamburger
11:20and your belly full of Diet Coke.
11:22Now, to you, a normal person watching This Is Home,
11:25you might think the president telling a female reporter
11:27to smile while she asks a question about a sex trafficker
11:30might make him look like a dick.
11:33But what if you asked another dick?
11:36What would they think of that exchange?
11:39There was a moment in the Oval Office,
11:40I wasn't even in there, but, you know,
11:41I was in the West Wing and somebody sent me
11:43where he was talking to Caitlin Collins,
11:46who's the CNN anchor.
11:47She's asking a question and the president says,
11:49Why don't you ever smile?
11:50Yeah.
11:50And it's actually, like, so perceptive.
11:53You think telling a woman to smile more is perceptive?
11:57Then let me introduce you to New York's
11:59many construction workers.
12:00They're a veritable oracle of Delphi's.
12:03You know, I'm also a little perceptive now and then,
12:06and I do perceive J.D. Vance
12:08as the wormy little chud he is.
12:10Dude has to pretend Trump is some sort of world historical thinker
12:13who comes up with genius insights
12:15that would never occur to mere mortals like us.
12:17Let's listen to some of the most brilliant observations
12:20from our perceptive president.
12:22If you have a windmill anywhere near your house,
12:25congratulations.
12:26They say the noise causes cancer.
12:28You tell me that one, okay?
12:30You know, you have voter ID to buy a loaf of bread.
12:32Give me a glass of water.
12:34Let me drop it on the magnus.
12:35That's the end of the magnus.
12:36Two Corinthians, 317.
12:38That's the whole ball game.
12:40Supposing we hit the body with a tremendous,
12:43whether it's ultraviolet or just very powerful light.
12:47And then I said, supposing you brought the light inside the body.
12:50The Continental Army suffered a bitter winter of Valley Forge.
12:54Our army manned the air.
12:56It ran the ramparts.
12:58It took over the airports.
13:00You know how you spell us, right?
13:03You spell us, U-S.
13:07I just picked that up.
13:08Has anyone ever thought of that?
13:10I just picked that up.
13:11A couple of days, I'm reading, and it said us.
13:14And I said, you know, if you think about it,
13:16us equals U-S.
13:19You know, it's true.
13:20He's the first person to ever realize that us is spelled U-S.
13:24He's so perceptive.
13:26These guys spent years pretending they cared about the Epstein scandal,
13:28and now they're calling Trump perceptive
13:30because he told a reporter to smile
13:31while she asked questions about that scandal.
13:33They lied. They don't care.
13:35All they care about is their own power.
13:37If you ask Trump why his name appears so often in the Epstein files,
13:40he'll say...
13:40Excuse me? What happened to us?
13:42This has been A Closer Look.
13:48We'll be right back with Nick Jonas, everybody.
13:56For more of Seth's Closer Looks,
13:58be sure to subscribe to Late Night on YouTube.
14:09My first guest tonight is a Grammy-nominated musician, actor,
14:13and one-third of Jonas Brothers' fifth.
14:16The studio Sunday Best is available Friday.
14:19Please welcome back to the show
14:21our very good friend Nick Jonas, everybody!
14:41How are you, my friend?
14:43Welcome back!
14:48It's rare when they're that excited,
14:50they want to applaud you while you're standing
14:52and then again when you're sitting.
14:54That's how excited.
14:56How excited are you.
14:58It is so good to be back.
14:59I always love seeing you here.
15:00Congratulations.
15:01You wrapped up a massive tour with your brothers.
15:0420 years.
15:0420 years of Jonas Brothers.
15:06Yeah.
15:07This was my favorite tour we've ever done.
15:09Yeah.
15:09It was 76 shows.
15:12That was just the North American leg.
15:13There's still more to come in other parts of the world
15:16later this year.
15:18But 76, then we did this thing where we had special guests
15:19come out and perform with us.
15:21People from our past, part of our story, our journey,
15:24and then just artists that we love.
15:25And it was a great time.
15:26You guys seem very good at looking back
15:28and appreciating how wonderful this journey has been.
15:32And do you do it even more when you're on sort of
15:34an anniversary tour like that?
15:35Yeah, I mean, the 20th anniversary was last year,
15:38technically, and we wanted to commemorate it with the fans
15:41and tell the story of our journey and the family, you know.
15:45And I think we realize how rare it is to still be doing this
15:49and to have fans as supportive as our fans are
15:52through the many stages of our career.
15:55Do you remember your first red carpet?
15:59We feel like this might be.
16:01These guys acted like you were never...
16:07Very much like...
16:09This was like, we're never going to be on another one of these.
16:14Yeah, I don't understand why our mouths were open
16:17every shot.
16:18It's very unkind.
16:19Usually the paparazzi are like,
16:20you want to get a couple where your mouths are closed.
16:22Yeah, they didn't care.
16:23But we actually had a whole conversation around
16:25what these poses were going to be,
16:26me and the brothers beforehand.
16:28And we said, it would be really cool if we went like this
16:30in every photo.
16:32Not so cool.
16:33Well, I like that you guys thought you were at the age
16:35where you thought you were coining this as a move.
16:37Yeah, yeah.
16:38We thought...
16:39Nobody ever did that before you guys came up for it.
16:41You also were inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame.
16:45Congratulations.
16:48How do you get word that you were an inductee
16:52into the New Jersey Hall of Fame?
16:53Well, it came by way of Eli Manning coming on stage.
16:58So we did this event called Jonas Conn back in March last year.
17:01Which was a crazy idea that we had
17:04that we didn't think we could actually pull off.
17:06We did it out in Jersey at the American Dream Mall.
17:09And, you know, thousands and thousands of people
17:11came out to celebrate this crazy 20-year ride
17:14and to kind of kick off the next chapter of the journey.
17:16We're still very young.
17:18So this is just the start to the next...
17:20Stop showing off.
17:20Yeah.
17:22But we're on stage and Eli Manning comes out.
17:25And, you know, we're massive Giants fans.
17:27Yeah.
17:27And he came out and said,
17:29hey, I've got great news for you in front of the whole crowd.
17:31You guys are going to be inducted into the New Jersey
17:33Hall of Fame.
17:33Which, as three Jerseyans who take that as a real sense of pride,
17:38it was a huge moment for us.
17:39And Danny DeVito actually presented us with our honoree.
17:44And it was a cool night.
17:45I mean, long night.
17:47Long ceremony.
17:47Yeah.
17:48I will say, like...
17:49A lot of inductees, it turns out.
17:50DeVito, Eli Manning, and a mall,
17:52it really is everything you would want.
17:54Jersey.
17:55From the New Jersey experience.
17:56Yeah.
17:57I would be worried, like, just knowing him as a prankster,
18:00like, if Eli Manning told me I was getting inducted to something,
18:03I would double-check.
18:05There you guys are.
18:06Very nice to get inducted.
18:09You also, I mean, you know, Jonas Conn at a mall makes a lot of sense
18:13because you guys did, in the early days,
18:15you would do shows at malls.
18:17Performed at malls, yeah.
18:17Were you, when you think back to those days,
18:19how nervous, how excited were you guys before your early shows?
18:23Well, we only performed in malls
18:25because we couldn't get booked to play real shows.
18:26Right, right, right.
18:27They're like, let's find a place where people are already there.
18:29Yeah.
18:30And then, and there was one instance, in particular,
18:33we were in St. Louis, and I think Build-A-Bear workshop.
18:38Booked us to play in this, you know, mall sort of, like,
18:42auditorium or just square or whatever.
18:43And we get there for soundcheck at 7 a.m.
18:46And the person that was kind of our wrangler, our handler,
18:49that was like, hey, just so you know,
18:50the mall walkers get here at 7.15.
18:54I'm like, what is a mall walker?
18:56Like, oh, it's a group of elderly folks that come in here
19:00and get their exercise, and they walk around the mall
19:03before patrons come in.
19:04And so, sure enough, while we're soundchecking,
19:06playing very loud pop rock music,
19:10we were pissing these elderly folks off so much
19:13while they're trying to enjoy their morning stroll, unbothered.
19:16Safe to say, about three people showed up for our show.
19:19Yeah.
19:19I thought it was a good time.
19:20I would imagine when you're soundchecking
19:21in front of a Build-A-Bear and old people are mad at you,
19:23that's when you're like, we made it.
19:24We made it.
19:25Yeah.
19:26That's when Disney called, really.
19:27Disney called, we're like,
19:28we heard you guys will play anywhere.
19:31Is this the first album?
19:33This is the first album that's...
19:35This is the first solo.
19:39Technically unreleased.
19:40Unreleased?
19:41Yeah, so I made a whole album
19:42when I was first signed at, like, 11 years old.
19:45Uh-huh.
19:45And then the last song I wrote for this solo album,
19:48which never got released, was with Kevin and Joe.
19:51Got it.
19:51It was the first song we'd written together,
19:53and then they heard it at the label,
19:53and they're like, wait, there's three of them?
19:55Um, and so they signed us,
19:57and this thing got shelved because of those guys.
20:00Oh, man.
20:00So this is Nicholas Jonas, but then the...
20:02So the first album that was released
20:04was called Nick Jonas.
20:05Is that correct?
20:06Uh, first solo album.
20:08Okay.
20:08I believe it was called Nick Jonas.
20:09Gotcha.
20:09In 2014.
20:10So this was like, you were so young,
20:12you were just bad at coming up with album titles.
20:15Yeah, it was homeschooled.
20:16Uh, you talk...
20:19They're like, no, no, no, we know your name.
20:20What's the title of the album?
20:21You're like, yeah, no, it's Nick Jonas.
20:23It's Nick Jonas.
20:23Uh, how do you guys collaborate?
20:25You talk about the last song in the album
20:27as the three of you,
20:28and obviously you've maintained a way
20:30of being creatively in balance with one another,
20:34but, you know, how do you make decisions?
20:36Is it two against one,
20:38or do you wait till all three agree?
20:40It is kind of a two against one situation.
20:43Yeah.
20:44And it actually, for the most part, it works.
20:47Yeah.
20:47Um, you know, with you and your brother,
20:49it's probably tough because it's just...
20:50Just one and one.
20:51Yeah, yeah, yeah.
20:51By the way, I re-watched our day drinking episode recently.
20:55Yeah, with our friend Jack McBrayer.
20:56Friend Jack McBrayer.
20:57Three, uh, Jonah and a McBrayer.
20:59I watched it with my mother-in-law,
21:00which was a very funny experience.
21:01Oh, yeah.
21:02Because I didn't realize we drink a lot.
21:04Yeah, we did.
21:05Yeah.
21:05It was fun, though.
21:06It's fun.
21:06It is.
21:07I try not to go back and watch them
21:08because then I'm like,
21:09oh, man, I got a problem.
21:11Yeah.
21:11You know, I have a lot more questions.
21:13Do you mind sticking around?
21:14You guys, this is Nick Jonas.
21:36Welcome back, everybody.
21:37We're here with Nick Jonas.
21:39And you got a new album.
21:42Sunday Best.
21:43Look at that.
21:44That's a fantastic...
21:45I mean, this, look at that kid.
21:48Wow.
21:49And Sunday Best.
21:50That's a very nice title.
21:51Thank you very much.
21:52What was the inspiration for these songs?
21:54You know, it was kind of just snapshots of life
21:57and trying to give people a window into my world
22:00over the last, you know, two, three years
22:03and just some experiences that I've had.
22:05And the title stems from a lyric about,
22:09you know, dressing in your Sunday Best,
22:11going to church as a kid.
22:12And, you know, our dad was a pastor
22:14and grew up singing to church.
22:15And so there's a lot of, like,
22:16sort of gospel soul influences in this music,
22:19which is something that I've always kind of had in my music,
22:21but I leaned in a bit further
22:22and got to work with some incredible collaborators
22:24to make an album that I'm really proud of
22:28and excited for people to hear
22:29and, you know, comes out to me.
22:30That's very exciting.
22:31And then I heard Priyanka gets to hear your music first.
22:37She does, yeah.
22:38How is she as a sounding board?
22:41Incredible, because she's really honest,
22:44which is important.
22:46And she's got really good ears.
22:48She picked Sucker.
22:49Okay.
22:50Long before I thought it would be a hit.
22:53Gotcha.
22:53And basically, you know,
22:55I had this other song that I actually wrote about her,
22:59which I was like, this is the single, right?
23:01She's like, no, it's this new one
23:03that you just played me just now.
23:06And she was right.
23:07And she's been right about a lot of things.
23:09Did you panic and go, oh, it's also about you?
23:13They're all about her.
23:15Your daughter is four.
23:17Does she listen to songs?
23:19Does she have a take?
23:21She, when she's not listening to, you know,
23:24Disney princess songs.
23:25Sure.
23:26We are one of her favorite listens.
23:29Okay, gotcha.
23:29Her favorite song of ours with the brothers
23:31is Love Me to Heaven.
23:32And then on this album, there's actually a song.
23:34It's the last song on the album that I wrote about her.
23:37It's called Princesses.
23:40And, you know, it's one of those titles
23:42that I thought would never get used,
23:43but I really liked the idea of, you know,
23:45writing a song just about what most of her mornings are like.
23:47She walks in, she's like, let's play Princesses.
23:49And it's basically, she's the princess.
23:50I'm the prince.
23:51We go to the ball.
23:52And we have a great time.
23:54Some point in time, she loses a slipper.
23:56You know how those stories are.
23:56Yeah, yeah.
23:57If I was capable of writing a song about my sons,
24:00it would be called Ninjas Who Don't Listen
24:02and Won't Put Their Shoes On.
24:06Sounds like a hit.
24:07They would like it.
24:07They'd be like, all right, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's fair.
24:09You were back on Broadway last year.
24:11It was.
24:11Which is incredible.
24:14This is also incredible.
24:15You and Reba were on Broadway years ago.
24:19And then again together on The Voice.
24:23You talked about, you know,
24:24this incredible journey you've been on
24:25and being able to lean on people
24:27that were there early in your career
24:28and you're still around in your life.
24:29That must have been a very special thing.
24:30I mean, certainly I know her as just a person
24:32who visits this show
24:33as an incredibly sincere, wonderful lady.
24:35She's the best.
24:37Honestly, she was the first famous person I ever met.
24:41Yeah.
24:42I booked this job at nine years old
24:45to go and be on Broadway.
24:47It was a dream of mine for my entire life.
24:52And, you know, she was so thoughtful
24:54and really generous with all of the cast.
24:57And she would have guests at every show
25:01and it was more of the most famous people
25:02you've ever seen or heard of.
25:04And it was just amazing to see how gracious she was then
25:07and, you know, how gracious she is now.
25:10It's really incredible.
25:11Doing The Voice with her,
25:13you know, I was a coach a couple years ago
25:14and came on to sort of mentor this time.
25:17And she's, I guess, she's just the same wonderful Reba.
25:20And that's why she is where she is today.
25:22It is.
25:23I think there is something to be said
25:24for when you are younger
25:26or at the beginning of your career
25:27and you see somebody who was established
25:28and they are still incredibly capable of being kind.
25:31Yeah.
25:31You're like, okay, there's no excuse.
25:33Like, there's really no excuse to change.
25:35I want to finish by asking you about a digital short
25:38I recently talked with Andy Samberg
25:40and the other Lonely Island about.
25:42You guys were in a band called Property of the Queen.
25:46And I did not realize
25:47because I was talking to these guys about it.
25:50You guys actually had songs,
25:52like fake songs that were not real.
25:54They did not have to write music for you guys.
25:56You had like 80 power,
25:581980s power ballads ready to go.
25:59Yeah.
25:59I'm going to go back and listen to this episode
26:01because I'm curious to know
26:02if they thought we were insane or not.
26:05No, they were big fans.
26:06Like that was, they were,
26:07I mean, I think also it was very rare for them
26:10to be working with people at the musical level
26:12who would say, actually, we have songs
26:14and not be super cringe.
26:17Well, that's great to hear.
26:18It was one of my favorite things we ever got to do.
26:21Yeah.
26:22And I've actually rewatched it a few times recently.
26:26And Bill Hader is so funny as the wizard.
26:29But it, you know, it was kind of a magical thing.
26:31Basically, we were on tour in Europe.
26:33We had all this downtime.
26:35And so we would just write these silly songs
26:38that were kind of in the vein of an 80s rock band.
26:42And when we sat down for that initial meeting,
26:44like they do with all the guests at SNL,
26:45they're like, hey, do you have any impressions
26:47that you can do?
26:48Yeah.
26:49Couldn't do any impressions.
26:50They're like, what about any sketch ideas?
26:52And we said, well, we'd love to do a digital short
26:53and do this band.
26:55And we played one of the songs.
26:56And he was like, yeah, we're doing it.
26:57Yeah.
26:59Well, I'm glad you had it.
27:00I'm glad they listened.
27:01And I'm glad they did it.
27:02And it's always so nice to see you, man.
27:03Congrats on the new album.
27:05Thanks for being here.
27:06Nick Jonas, everybody.
27:07Sunday best.
27:09Here it is.
27:09Available tomorrow.
27:10We'll be right back with John Early, everybody.
27:33Our next guest is an Emmy-nominated actor
27:35and comedian you know from
27:37Would It Kill You to Laugh?
27:38The After Party and Search Party,
27:40as well as the film Eternity.
27:42He's performing in what we did
27:44before our Moth Days
27:45at the Greenwich House Theater in New York.
27:46Please welcome back to the show
27:47our friend John Early, everybody.
28:05Hello!
28:07John!
28:08You brought out tea?
28:10Yeah, that's right.
28:11I, um, I'm on vocal rest.
28:13You're on vocal rest.
28:15I'm on vocal rest.
28:16Sorry.
28:17Can you guys hear me?
28:18Can you guys hear me?
28:19So, I'm starring in a play
28:21off-Broadway right now.
28:24And I'm...
28:25Is this...
28:25Is this...
28:25Is this better?
28:26No.
28:27Okay.
28:28Got it.
28:29Um...
28:31So...
28:32I'm...
28:32I'm starring in a play,
28:34and it requires a lot of my voice.
28:36And so, if you guys don't mind,
28:37I need to protect my voice
28:39by speaking at this volume.
28:41Let me finish, Seth.
28:44I don't want to damage my vocal cords
28:46any more than I'm doing right now
28:48on your little show.
28:50You know what I mean?
28:51This actually even seems too harsh,
28:52so if you guys don't mind,
28:54I'm going to bring it down here.
28:56Is that cool if I bring it down here?
28:59First question.
29:01First question.
29:02Oh, first question.
29:03I can ask the first question.
29:04No, no, shoot.
29:05Marina, go.
29:06You're sure?
29:06You're not?
29:07Okay, so I guess my question is...
29:10When we booked you,
29:11were you aware you'd be on vocal rest?
29:13No.
29:14No.
29:15Imagine my shock.
29:20When I realized I had to be on vocal rest,
29:23it's such a bummer.
29:24My God.
29:26Can I ask a question?
29:27Is it...
29:28I'll stop.
29:29Wait, no, no.
29:30No, you can stop.
29:31Okay.
29:32Did you...
29:33Is it true they made you
29:35get the mustache for the part?
29:36Yes, yes.
29:38I grew this mustache.
29:40Wallace Shawn is the playwright,
29:42and he asked me,
29:43the great Wallace Shawn,
29:44he asked me to grow this mustache out
29:47for the character of Tim.
29:49Yeah.
29:49And, you know,
29:50with every passing day of this process,
29:52I've really realized there's almost nothing
29:54I wouldn't do for Wallace Shawn.
29:56Yes.
29:58I would do anything for Wallace Shawn.
30:00He's my hero.
30:02I love him.
30:03Wallace Shawn, for those who don't know,
30:05because Wallace Shawn,
30:06Princess Bride,
30:09Clueless,
30:10so many great...
30:14He's incredible.
30:15Young Sheldon.
30:16Yes, yes.
30:18And Wallace Shawn is one of those people,
30:20he means so much to me.
30:21I mean, I feel like Princess Bride
30:23was my great introduction to Wallace Shawn.
30:25Yeah.
30:25Was that yours as well?
30:28You know,
30:30I guess all that jazz.
30:31He has a very small part
30:32in all that jazz.
30:34Well, I don't know.
30:35I mean, he really is an icon.
30:38I mean, you all know him
30:39when you saw him.
30:40He really...
30:40I mean, I know that gay people
30:42have stripped the word icon
30:43of all meaning.
30:44Yeah.
30:45But, like...
30:46By the way, I can say that.
30:48Okay?
30:49But, like, you know,
30:50but in the old sense of the word icon,
30:52he truly is an icon,
30:54and he's almost, like,
30:56public domain in a way.
30:58Like, he's so meaningful
30:59to so many people,
31:00and I've had the great...
31:01I'll put this down
31:02because it was a prop.
31:05That's the kind of actor you are
31:07since you've been in this play.
31:08Exactly.
31:09Yeah.
31:11But I've had the great honor
31:13of walking with him
31:15to and from rehearsals in New York,
31:16and people...
31:17I've seen people
31:18almost get in car accidents
31:19trying to, like, express their love.
31:21I've seen people, like,
31:23banging from the inside of restaurants,
31:26banging on the windows
31:27as we're walking by.
31:29You know, it's wild.
31:32And what's so funny is, like,
31:33I think people do really know him
31:35as this kind of beloved,
31:36brilliant character actor,
31:38but we're coming...
31:39We will be walking
31:40from these rehearsals
31:42where we're rehearsing this play
31:44that he's written
31:44that I'm sorry,
31:45I know I'm biased,
31:46but I think it's a towering masterpiece.
31:50I think it's, like,
31:51a great American play.
31:52I'm sorry.
31:54I don't know.
31:55I don't think a lot of people
31:57know that Wallace Shawn
31:58has been making, like,
31:59somewhat avant-garde theater
32:00since the 70s.
32:02Yeah.
32:02Yeah.
32:02Well, I imagine that's why
32:04there's so much window banging
32:05on, you know, Broadway.
32:08Like, that is, like,
32:09the peak awareness
32:10of Wallace Shawn.
32:11Yes.
32:11Now I actually want this back.
32:12I'm sorry.
32:12Okay, that's fine.
32:13So now it's practical.
32:15It's not a prop anymore.
32:16Yeah, yeah.
32:16Sorry.
32:18And also,
32:19the director
32:20is his old friend
32:21and longtime collaborator.
32:23Yes.
32:24The great Andre Gregory,
32:26who's 92 years old.
32:27That's fantastic.
32:28So Wallace is the young one.
32:29Yes.
32:30Yeah, with the two of them together.
32:31Yes, yes.
32:32And, you know,
32:33you may know them
32:34from my dinner with Andre.
32:35So this is the,
32:35I mean, I guess this is technically
32:37the first time I think
32:38I saw Wallace Shawn
32:40because I remember,
32:40I mean, this is dating myself,
32:42I remember watching
32:43Siskel and Ebert
32:45review this movie
32:46and be like,
32:46this is a classic.
32:47And then they explain the movie,
32:49which is just two guys
32:50talking at a dinner.
32:51Yeah.
32:52They're just a conversation.
32:53Yeah.
32:54Look at them in their sexual prime.
32:55Yeah.
32:58Was this a movie,
32:59are you familiar with the movie
33:00My Dinner with Andre
33:01or were you?
33:03Well, yes.
33:05I pretended to have seen it for years.
33:07Okay.
33:08It's one of the,
33:08I pretended to have seen it for men.
33:11You know, I would go,
33:13they would say,
33:13have you seen My Dinner with Andre?
33:14Yes.
33:15You know, I.
33:16This kind of like film school dude,
33:18is that what we're talking about?
33:19Yeah.
33:20Kind of cinephile,
33:21like hot cinephile.
33:22Yeah.
33:23So you were trying to like impress them.
33:24I'd be like,
33:25I love it so much,
33:26I don't even want to talk about it.
33:28Oh, that's very good.
33:29That's very good.
33:30Yeah.
33:31And then finally,
33:32when I started working with them
33:33on this play,
33:34a year and a half ago,
33:35by the way,
33:36because they have this
33:37very unconventional rehearsal process
33:39where they rehearse for years.
33:40It's amazing.
33:41It's so cool.
33:42When I started working with them,
33:44I was,
33:45I kind of sneakily,
33:46finally watched the movie
33:47and I was like,
33:48totally blown away.
33:49And in fact,
33:50a lot of you,
33:50I'm assuming,
33:51are visiting New York,
33:52maybe for the first time.
33:54Really?
33:55Okay.
33:56I was you once.
33:58And I remember smelling
34:00the hot piss on the ground
34:02and being like,
34:03I'm home.
34:04Yeah.
34:05And when you go back
34:06to your hometowns,
34:07I really recommend
34:08My Dinner with Andre,
34:09Vanya on 42nd Street.
34:11These are movies
34:12that Wally and Andre made together
34:14that are like quintessential
34:15New York movies.
34:16They will help you nurse
34:17your longing for this city
34:19when you go back.
34:20Okay.
34:21Now, has this ever happened?
34:23I mean,
34:23I'm wondering what happened
34:24when you actually,
34:24so you snuck and watched it.
34:26Yeah.
34:26You loved it.
34:27Yes.
34:28Now you're working with guys
34:29and you can't talk about it
34:31in a way that reveals
34:32that you finally just saw it.
34:33No, this is,
34:34this is,
34:35that was completely what happened.
34:37Yeah.
34:37I just, yeah,
34:38I've had to kind of just,
34:40I've literally,
34:41I think I've even pretended around,
34:42like,
34:43oh, what was that part?
34:43You know, like.
34:44Yeah.
34:44As if I had,
34:45if I had seen it years ago,
34:46you know.
34:47I once lied to an actor
34:48and said I saw their new movie
34:50and loved it
34:50before I'd seen it.
34:52Yeah.
34:52Now, I was confident
34:53based on what I heard
34:54that I would love it.
34:55Right.
34:55Then I saw it and loved it
34:56and the next time I saw it,
34:57I'm like,
34:58I lied to you.
34:58I have seen it now.
34:59And the way I said I loved it
35:01is not big enough
35:02for how much I actually love it.
35:05Well, I'm always so curious
35:07if you feel a responsibility
35:09when guests come on the show
35:10to see the movie they did.
35:12I try if I think
35:13I'm going to love it.
35:14Okay.
35:15You know what I mean?
35:16But then what do you do
35:17conversationally
35:18if you absolutely
35:19didn't see it?
35:20I say I can't wait
35:21to see it.
35:21Brilliant.
35:22Yeah.
35:23The best in the business.
35:24Yeah, yeah, yeah.
35:25That's crazy.
35:25By the way.
35:30By the way,
35:31they were like seals.
35:32They were told to applaud.
35:33Yeah.
35:36Wait, are there,
35:37I do want to go back.
35:38Were,
35:39are there other movies
35:41over the years
35:41that you lied
35:42about having seen
35:42for the purposes
35:43of impressing?
35:44Uh,
35:46like apocalypse now.
35:48Yeah.
35:49Which by the way,
35:49I'm dying to see.
35:50Still haven't.
35:51Still have not seen it.
35:53What do you think,
35:53what do you think
35:54it's about?
35:57Friendship.
35:58Yeah.
35:59In a way.
36:00Yeah.
36:00In a way.
36:01Any others?
36:02I feel like I've never,
36:04I feel like this is not one
36:05that I think people
36:06would typically lie about,
36:07but this is definitely
36:08one that I have lied about
36:09like recently
36:10with Cider House Rules.
36:11Yeah.
36:12That seems to be one
36:14where you could just like
36:14cop to not having seen it.
36:16Yeah.
36:16You know,
36:16I've never seen it,
36:17but it's such a strange
36:18thing with movies.
36:19Don't you always feel like
36:20if someone's asking you
36:21about a movie,
36:22you're like,
36:22yeah.
36:23Yeah,
36:23I feel,
36:24it's so bizarre.
36:24Well,
36:24especially old ones,
36:25like new ones,
36:26you know,
36:26those are so.
36:27But Cider House Rules
36:27is new enough.
36:29Yeah.
36:29That I.
36:30I feel like you could
36:31get away being like,
36:32oh,
36:32it was a crazy time,
36:33I missed that one.
36:34Yeah,
36:34yeah,
36:34I was 10.
36:35Yeah.
36:36Yeah.
36:37This is,
36:38it's a four-person cast.
36:39Yes.
36:39And this show,
36:40it's very much about a family.
36:42Yes.
36:43What,
36:43how was it explained to you
36:45before you read it?
36:47I was given no explanation.
36:49I was given the play Raw.
36:51Yeah.
36:53And,
36:54but,
36:54but it is,
36:55it is a play about,
36:56I mean,
36:56I don't want to give away
36:57too much,
36:58because it's a very mysterious,
37:00profound play,
37:01but it's,
37:02it's a,
37:03it's a father
37:03played by Josh Hamilton.
37:05It is a mother
37:07played by Maria Dizia.
37:09It is a son
37:11played by John Early.
37:15And that was organic.
37:16Yeah,
37:16that was organic.
37:17That was organic.
37:18Mine was forced,
37:19you earned yours.
37:20Yeah.
37:21No,
37:21now they're doing it again.
37:23Yeah,
37:23now it's,
37:24now it's supposed to be.
37:24Now they're being told to class.
37:25You're sweet.
37:26And then,
37:27and then,
37:28so we have,
37:28we have father,
37:29mother,
37:29son,
37:29and then we have
37:30the father's long time mistress.
37:33All right.
37:34Played by Hope Davis.
37:36It's incredible.
37:37I'm working with like,
37:38three of the greatest actors
37:38who've ever walked the earth.
37:40It's insane.
37:40You're known,
37:42and beloved,
37:43for the fact that you are
37:44a fantastically funny person.
37:46And I imagine you have
37:47this great fan base,
37:49and yet this show
37:50has many comic elements.
37:51Sure, yes.
37:52But it is not,
37:53it is not a comedy per se.
37:54Like, do you,
37:55can you sense when people
37:56are in the crowd
37:57and they're like,
37:58oh my God,
37:58there's John Early on stage.
37:59So they're excited
38:01to see this other side?
38:02This is my biggest fear.
38:03Like, you know,
38:03I've posted about this
38:04on my Instagram,
38:05and you know,
38:06it's a very delicate,
38:07sensitive play.
38:08That is actually,
38:09I find it like,
38:10uproariously funny
38:11because of,
38:12while Ashawn has such
38:13a distinct sense of humor,
38:14that's very hard to describe,
38:15but I'm so scared
38:19that like,
38:20my fans,
38:22if you can call them that,
38:23you know,
38:24if I even have them,
38:25but like,
38:25I'm scared that the people
38:26who know me
38:26are going to come,
38:27like, tanked.
38:29Oh, yeah.
38:29Thinking that I'm going
38:30to sing Donna Summer.
38:31Yeah.
38:32You know,
38:32which I'm compelled
38:33to do every few years.
38:34Right, right, right.
38:35At a live show,
38:36you know,
38:36and I even,
38:37I,
38:38last night was our first preview,
38:39and I did see someone,
38:41in, I think,
38:42like,
38:42a,
38:43like,
38:43a sequined,
38:44like, tube top.
38:45Yeah.
38:46Which, by the way,
38:47yas.
38:49Like,
38:49go off,
38:50by the way.
38:51I, there's,
38:51I don't want to,
38:52wear whatever you want
38:53to the play,
38:53but I was like,
38:54oh, no.
38:57I was like,
38:57I know what she wants
38:58from this,
38:59and she's not,
38:59it's not a drama.
39:01I would never describe
39:02it as dramatic.
39:02I would describe it
39:03as very,
39:04it's shockingly intimate.
39:06Yeah.
39:06It's like,
39:07these four characters
39:08are basically just sitting there
39:10with their tea,
39:11and they're basically
39:12telling you the story
39:13of their lives,
39:14and we're, like,
39:14looking directly
39:15into your eyes,
39:16and it's not,
39:16we're not,
39:17it's not like,
39:18you know,
39:19it's not like,
39:20you know,
39:20audience participation,
39:21like, you know,
39:22at all.
39:22It's not immersive.
39:23It's like,
39:24just very,
39:25it's very confessional,
39:26very intimate.
39:27It's like you're,
39:27like, a fly on the wall
39:28in someone's therapy session.
39:30It's, it's,
39:31it's really special.
39:32And there's full,
39:34penetrative,
39:35unsimulated sex.
39:36Wow.
39:36Yeah.
39:37On stage,
39:38or just right off?
39:39Both.
39:41Just kidding,
39:42I just wanted you
39:42to come to me.
39:44I'm very excited
39:45to see it myself.
39:46And it's great
39:47to have you here.
39:47Thank you so much,
39:48John.
39:49Congratulations.
