00:10Summers are brutal with the heat.
00:12It'll melt your shoes, your skin, it'll tear you up for sure.
00:18If it's too hot outside, the bad guys don't want to go out and commit crimes.
00:22When the nighttime comes, the freaks come out.
00:26Put your pants off!
00:28When that sun's gone, people think they can hide the bad stuff in the dark.
00:31This is the I don't believe in Facebook.
00:34One team, one family.
00:36We always pull together.
00:39You guys brought your back!
00:41What the f*** am I in handcuffs for?
00:44It's very dangerous.
00:46Backup isn't always closed.
00:50It's not an emergency.
00:52You're gonna kill me.
00:54Assaults, robberies, shootings.
00:57It's lawless out here.
00:58It's gonna get hot tonight.
00:59A little bit of spice is always good.
01:01Stop having sex.
01:02Put your jeans on.
01:04See you in the wild, wild west, Tucson.
01:07It's the witching hour.
01:08Don't tap out on us yet, okay?
01:30It's the start of my shift.
01:31I have no idea what's ahead of me for tonight, but it's never a dull day, never a predictable
01:37day here in the desert.
01:47Saturday night is the start of everyone's weekend.
01:51Everyone puts in a long, hard week at whatever job that they do, have to endure all of the
01:57heat and the exhaustion that just beat them down during the week.
02:00And with that, people want to be able to relax with friends, hang out, go out for a drink.
02:07And it's around midnight is when they make the decision to get behind the wheel.
02:16We have seen the absolute horror that these types of decisions can leave on families.
02:21And we've seen families being torn apart by somebody just making a very, very poor decision.
02:30It's our job at the DUI unit to be proactive and try to make sure everyone just gets home safe.
02:44I try to have as high a vigilance level as possible.
02:47I'm always constantly scanning, looking at the mirror.
02:50I know a lot of people think I'm paranoid.
02:52I am.
02:52There's got to be paranoid in this job.
02:56That was one going 87.
02:59I can't imagine it's gotten too far, especially with all the buildup that we have coming up ahead of us.
03:06And I think that might be it right here.
03:10So my biggest strategy is to try to get a license plate first.
03:13That way, if it does take off, we at least have information we can go on.
03:21And he's just speeding around cars.
03:23All right.
03:23All I needed is.
03:266 and 7 traffic.
03:27Get you 20 in a sec.
03:31It looks like he's trying to get around cars, running with lights.
03:34Do we have survey up yet?
03:36Copy.
03:37It's near Irving and Kaya, Santa Cruz.
03:40It's going to be a black 2021 Ford Mustang.
03:44I've already lost visual.
03:47So it took off from us.
03:48Kind of what I predicted.
03:51So it sounds like Ool had a vehicle take off from him.
03:56There's no one in active pursuit of him.
03:58There's just multiple deputies that are in the area now.
04:01And they're essentially just trying to lock him down.
04:04We're still waiting for our airplane to pick it up.
04:08It was last seen heading westbound from the area where we tried to acquire.
04:24This could be a carjacking.
04:25It could be a stolen vehicle incident.
04:27They could be under the influence.
04:29They could hide drugs.
04:30They could hide guns.
04:31Usually people that run from us have something that they want to hide.
04:36All right, so they're not trying to affect a traffic stop yet.
04:40They're keeping the plane on him.
04:43They were able to read his license plate during the initial pursuit.
04:46So they have a couple of units that are going to his house now.
05:02He's going the wrong direction, which is extraordinarily dangerous.
05:06Southwest 582, turn up to 809, sir.
05:11Northbound, Tucson Escoots, Park Rogen.
05:14All right, so he's pulling into an address.
05:19They're there right down here.
05:30You got no?
05:31No, no, no.
05:34Right behind you.
05:40Someone may be under the canopy.
05:44Let's see your hair!
05:45Oh, look.
05:46Look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look.
05:48We're probably in contact with driver.
05:51Look out of the car, slowly!
05:53Driver, let me see your hands, both of us!
05:56Turn around.
05:57Turn around, keep your hands up!
06:00Keep your hands up.
06:05Look away from me!
06:06Are you going to get dog bait?
06:08Make a crossbow?
06:09With your right hand, grab your T-shirt.
06:12Lift it above your waistband.
06:13Get down.
06:15Get down on your hands and knees.
06:17All backwards towards us.
06:22Crawl.
06:23Crawl.
06:24Backwards.
06:25Crawl.
06:25Get up and crawl.
06:27Get up and crawl.
06:28No, no, no, no.
06:30I'm a dummy.
06:31I'm a dummy.
06:36Don't f**k with the heat, Bill.
06:46so i'm definitely cool okay i'm with the sheriff's department yes sir why'd you run from me
06:50i just i didn't want to get in trouble man i didn't think i did anything wrong until i mean
06:56i just didn't want to get in trouble man but i made a mistake i'll learn from it do you
06:59think
06:59you're in trouble now oh yeah for sure okay you know the only reason i was going to stop you
07:04is
07:04because you're just going 87 and a 55. yeah i'm sorry we had a simple conversation about that
07:08i'm sorry i didn't know it was really man okay following the whole time on irvington
07:13i'm getting multiple chances to stop you cannot claim ignorance in this man i know i made a mistake
07:18i'll learn from him you put so many people in danger today with your driving sorry about that
07:25i'm a good kid i just not not anymore man i know all right you want to just put him
07:30in your car for
07:33hey man is there anything anything in particular we need to be looking for right now can you get a
07:36backpack and there's a is there a gun in the bag no nothing i don't have a gun but when
07:40we search the
07:40background are we going to find anything we don't like all right uh there's a couple bags here let me
07:50just let me just document we'll we'll just take it right here
07:58oh wow
08:03it's an abnormal amount of cash for sure um definitely more than i make in a month
08:09i personally wouldn't be carrying uh that much money around hey bro i'm gonna count your cash for
08:15you okay this is the first band that had a 5 000 ring on it it's definitely weird seven eight
08:22nine
08:24but it's not illegal to carry that kind of cash on you so i got 4 200 in that first
08:28band of 50s
08:29does that sound about right yes okay one two three four five i got three hundred
08:3742 plus 16 so fifty eight hundred dollars um that somebody's carrying around just in an envelope
08:46what are you carrying our five grand for i just sold my one of my cars and i i just
08:51had the cash
08:51with me and i keep it on me because i can't trust anyone okay hi that's my safe support yes
09:00yeah your son made a very done decision tonight he ran from cops and put a lot of people in
09:04danger
09:05today we are towing his car and he's being booked into jail for a felony
09:09where is he uh he's on his way to be booked to the pima county jail now
09:14he put everybody in danger by speeding and not just speeding running red lights overtaking cars
09:23and he was speeding pretty 87 and a 55
09:29what could have been a simple ticket and i'm sorry that happened we didn't raise them to be that way
09:33so
09:34good night you have good night so that was our violator's mother she just wanted to get good
09:41ideas to what happened you can find so many examples of parents uh you know blaming law enforcement
09:47but that didn't seem like the case here that was our first traffic stop for the night and that was
09:53already an eventful one so we can kind of uh just see what the rest of the night has in
09:59store for us
10:15it's like watching the sunset is like the calm before the storm
10:20bad people come out at night they want to be outside when the sun's down rather than be out when
10:26the sun's up and it's 105 outside
10:30doing this job it's like you go from being half asleep to just like wide awake and your heart rate's
10:35up to like you know 130 in like two seconds it's like something can happen at any minute
10:41slow night could turn fast very quickly
10:58that car just took kind of a wide turn and they're speeding
11:24it could be nothing or it could be something we never know
11:35how's it going sir i'm definitely laying with the sheriff's department can you turn the car off for
11:38me yes it's on now i will explain the situation to you you don't have to i was there oh
11:44i watched
11:44i observed it oh no i'm gonna explain it to you okay listen okay go ahead and name your license
11:49give me a moment i'm getting the license for you okay do you understand
11:54why are you so hostile because you sped up and you tailgated me sir and forced me to go
12:01i i was in your car forcing you to go 100 miles an hour
12:04you did and it will come up in court sir
12:09there's nothing in there sir i do not consent to search
12:12there's no search i'm just looking in the view
12:14i do not consent to search
12:15once again no
12:25do you have a registration and insurance i do let me get that for you
12:29there's the registration
12:33all right give me just a second third
12:37so he's trying to say that he went 100 miles an hour because you were behind him
12:40yeah because i was delegating him i i couldn't even catch up to him

13:18asking a cop if we're able to read i mean that's kind of rude you're the office manager for a
13:22law firm

15:16a nice work
15:33i feel like this summer has been the worst the heat is so bad you know
15:43this time of day we'll get a lot of like civil matter kind of calls where people have problems
15:51with their neighbors but we have the extra stuff you know horses are loose in the street yesterday my
16:01highlight was chasing a dog in the road
16:09good i would say in the evening it's more uh more dangerous obviously i feel like out here
16:16people think that's like the wild wild west
16:19so it's just more lawless out here it's crazier
16:36i'm
16:36five four four seven six code 81
16:41125
16:42hospital 1032 with the machete has been on the spot for at least 10 minutes
16:5810-4 you can start heading over here i'm gonna make contact with him in a sec
17:15i'm going to raise my hands and dramatically and loudly first declare
17:20i am not a disease and i am not a crime that's okay
17:24i have a machete
17:26i don't see a machete anywhere
17:31so we don't want to bother with you thank you what thank you
17:35it's your turn to speak now and i'm going to be quiet okay thank you i appreciate that it's your
17:40turn hey so all we need you to do is you can't hang out on this property okay
17:47that was so easy
17:53i have a machete okay would you like me to relieve myself of the machete
17:57no i would like you to not touch the machete okay thank you i'm going to say
18:03you're sweet i appreciate you and i'm going to cry a little as i want okay well that's okay
18:08i have a little bit of my rights intact
18:13okay well we're done here
18:26as a deputy i've been eight and a half years i was in the u.s army for eight years
18:34and i was a military police officer and i figured i was decent at it so i would keep going
18:40i was like i'll stay a cop i have a lot to offer the experience twice
19:04can we confirm the 2140 because i think got a call coming in right now
19:12this guy keeps calling in but he's kind of out in the boonies we're in the middle of the desert
19:17but he knows this guy who's broke a window in one of the trailers this may just be
19:23some type of civil dispute it's all the way up three points
19:30there's a lot of abandoned properties out there in three points
19:34it's kind of like an unspoken rule that nobody goes to three points alone
19:40it's all desert out here it's all pretty much flatland
19:45there's another unit that's pretty close to the house so we're just going to speed it up a little
19:51bit try to get there as safely and quickly as possible
20:10i'll talk to you okay good deal come over here come over here i'm gonna let him talk to him
20:14okay cool
20:18what's going on man this guy's just pulled up over here man there's a tire marks right here and
20:24every window out there man okay i didn't do anything to it's on fire today so i'm creeping through
20:31my yard okay so he was on your property yes and i followed back here and that's when he was
20:36walking
20:37around out here he just came up over here right now start threatening me oh oh it's this guy man
20:46he's crazy
21:00figure out kind of what's going on here
21:05what's the deal were you over here tonight or i have i'm all innocent okay
21:13so he's staying here the other guy out there
21:17it was just past the trees over here okay he says he was sleeping inside of
21:22i'll be right here when he heard him started being breaking all the windows around the house
21:39so he threw the rock through the window hit you in the head um and then he smashed yeah he
21:45smashed
21:46out that one too i'm sure of it i mean this one pretty sure there's glass all over the place
21:52i mean
21:52oh yeah he's crazy man no i get you bro um stop walking this way bro i appreciate you
22:02okay i don't want to go anywhere around here guys
22:07he apparently came over and threw a rock through the window there's one two three broken windows on this
22:14side there's like that weird ventilation window up here that's broken and then that tiny window with
22:21the curtain but there's like a trail that leads back in here footprints like there's one right here
22:29it looks like that's where he kind of dug the rocks up so he was definitely walking here
22:41you don't have any shoes or anything like that no one okay all right you want to go ahead and
22:4826 then
22:57get out of here relax relax why are you arresting me you ain't got no reason to arrest me
23:06i come here to report a crime and i'm going to jail what kind of is that
23:13do you own this property are you renting it do you have permission to stay here
23:22no but i've been trying to get a hold of the uh
23:26until you get permission from somebody don't be going into random houses even if they do look abandoned
23:32um i understand it's hot you got to escape the elements but that's not how to do it all right
23:39um
23:39go grab your stuff from inside because you're not going to be able to stay here tonight
23:54all right don't come back to the property
24:11he just seems like you know down on his luck kind of seems like he's just
24:18homeless and living with what means he can
24:24you know i've got my own personal story of just having family members dealing with homelessness
24:29and having that compassion for them um so i just try to treat everybody the same
24:36you know what at the end of the day we're law enforcement we're all police officers but we still
24:41have to have some type of compassion and empathy for people
25:17i've got a call from a buddy he's at the circle k on ajo and kenny
25:22he was mentioning something about him and his lady got a fight and he punched a hole in the wall
25:26he called me to practice and i could hear the cops in the background
25:32he was in his vehicle and i told him like we need to get out just listen to them
25:36and he's just yelling rantically and i'm telling him like you're just listening so they're gonna kill me
26:01the cops
26:01we're in route right now and the suspect is still inside the vehicle the information we have is that
26:06he's by himself, he's refusing verbal commands, and he might have a weapon.
26:13We don't know if this person's a mitet.
26:15He can commit suicide, or he can start shooting at us or the public, right?
26:24We want to get to all the people there, still inside the store, as far away as we can,
26:28and get them out quickly and safely.
26:45He's just tucked in in there.
26:48He's in that car.
26:50He might be either drunk or on something.
26:52He had a verbal argument with his wife, but he's known to carry a gun.
26:59Go ahead and get out of the car, man, and we'll talk about it.
27:02Hey, you want to tell you?
27:04There's an exit on the west side.
27:06Emergency exit.
27:08Just get those folks out.
27:14Hey, what can you do as far as securing the front door so if this guy exits his vehicle,
27:18he can't make it inside?
27:21You are under arrest.
27:22Exit your vehicle with your hands clear and empty.
27:26Number 145, we're challenging the vehicle now.
27:34We are not leaving.
27:36Exit the vehicle with your hands up and empty.
27:40You're in the vehicle.
27:40You're in the vehicle.
27:43You're in the vehicle.
27:43You're in the vehicle.
27:43You're in the vehicle.
27:45You're in the vehicle.
27:46And obviously, we can't see his hands.
27:47In situations like this, we don't know if it was suicide by a cop or if he's going to
27:50shoot at us.
27:53OK, we've got 713 inside.
27:55We've got them kind of barricaded in the back.
27:57And we're working on clearing this out.
28:05Hey, you want to tell you?
28:07Tell me what's up?
28:12Step out of the car.
28:13You are under arrest.
28:16We are not going anywhere, and neither are you.
28:20Can you roll down the window so we can talk at least?
28:31We're going to go pick this up.
28:35Hey, is that driver window open?
28:38I had a pepper ball ready.
28:46Guys, hey, get out of here.
28:48Leave.
28:54They're on the ground.
28:58Hands up! Keep them up!
29:03Get on the ground!
29:04Get on the ground!
29:05On the ground!
29:07On the ground!
29:09Get on the ground!
29:12Hands on!
29:14Go for it!
29:20I'm complaining.
29:22I'm complaining.
29:24The other guy?
29:25Yeah, very useful.
29:31I'm not a bad dude.
29:33Donald Trump, please help me, Donald Trump.
29:37I'm a patriot, man!
29:39Is that the vehicle replacing him, bro?
29:41No, man.
29:42It sucks, man, you know what I mean?
29:47If he starts being combative or anything, just...
29:49Yeah, I'll give you a buzz.
29:50Alright, sounds good, man. Thank you.
30:23Cuz...
30:24There are several shots, you can hear the velocity in the house, there's a quad driving around somewhere in the
30:30desert.
30:39So somebody calling in saying their house is being shot at.
30:45So, go there, find out if that homeowner has problems with anybody, why their house would be getting shot at.
30:52They can force our setting.
30:55Singing cactus, we're out, way out in the rural area.
30:59We can't rely on GPS out here.
31:07These roads suck.
31:24Hi.
31:26What's going on?
31:29When I opened the door, I was sitting in the bar.
31:33But I heard something like ricochet in the trees after I heard the shots.
31:37It was like really close to me.
31:38This tree right here?
31:39Yeah, so I closed the door and then I waited until I stopped hearing them so that I could go
31:45inside.
31:46Do you have any problems with anybody?
31:48No.
31:50Can I see your video?
31:58Yeah, you can hear that ring or the ricochet.
32:04Okay.
32:05And that's probably where the shooting is coming from.
32:08Yeah.
32:10All right, hang tight.
32:12It's an old mine where all the UTVs, they come over here, off-roading, and they just shoot at it.
32:17All that property back there is literally the direction of this perfect trajectory of where they're shooting.
32:24Might need to do a Code 9 out here.
32:29Okay, um, we're gonna have to come up with a plan where we can do periodic checks.
32:35But obviously, if it happens, immediately 9-1-1, let the dispatcher know this is an ongoing problem.
32:41That'd be perfect.
32:42And I'll try to find these guys.
32:44Okay.
32:45So I'll stop scaring you guys at night.
32:47Thank you so much. I appreciate it.
32:49All right, well have a better night.
33:06People have no sense of what a ricochet can do.
33:10People do get hit in their house from stray bullets all the time.
33:17If I knew my daughter just got out of the car and she's scared to walk to her house, shots
33:23being fired, that would drive me crazy.
33:28This will go to our community problems unit.
33:31The plan is, if this call comes back up again, I know exactly where to start putting myself, and then
33:37we can start arresting people on felonies.
33:51Make a 407 traffic.
33:57This guy over here, he's in a hurry.
34:00Unreadable 28 on a blue Tesla.
34:05It's kind of all over the road, slim on his brakes.
34:09River and Craycroft South.
34:19Hello.
34:21Are you in a hurry?
34:22Yes.
34:23What's going on?
34:25I've been following him for like four miles.
34:28And he's going like below the speed limit in the left lane.
34:31So how's that an excuse for you driving?
34:33It's not a excuse.
34:34Okay.
34:35It was all my bad.
34:36100% my fault.
34:39I appreciate your honesty.
34:40Okay.
34:41You're going to get a warning tonight.
34:43But like you said, it's not an excuse.
34:44Just because somebody is driving their way.
34:47You're cutting people off.
34:48You're speeding.
34:49I think you knew the gig was up as soon as I pulled up behind you, right?
34:52I totally deserve everything.
34:53Let's just make better decisions when we're trying to get to a fair, okay?
34:56Right, right.
34:56All right, sir.
34:57Have a good night.
34:57Thank you so much.
34:58All right.
34:59You too.
35:01Normally, I don't do traffic stops unless it's something egregious like that.
35:07I thought we were getting a DUI because how he was breaking.
35:10I promise you, that warning probably went a lot further.
35:15He'll probably be like, you know what?
35:17Maybe I need to slow down.
35:33As the heat comes, it gets dangerous.
35:37During the summer, we have a lot of, they're called, like, man downs.
35:41People just fainted on the side of the road, you know, from heat exhaustion.
35:55554-76, rescue follow-up, right now, we're going to go to a rescue follow-up, which a reportee says
36:03she found a man on the ground.
36:04He might be dead.
36:23Oh, no.
36:25Oh, no.
36:29It's been a while since he's been down.
36:32It has to be at least a couple of days.
36:48I can't tell how long he's been deceased.
36:55I can't lift him.
37:02The skin is starting to fall apart.
37:04That's usually from the heat.
37:07I just need to do an inspection of him before I call the medical examiners.
37:15And there's nobody else to help me because I can't hold him and take a picture.
37:20It's too heavy.
37:21Let me get these.
37:26See what I can do.
37:40Most of the time, the medical examiners, they call it declined jurisdiction.
37:45They won't come pick up his body if he has medical issues, because they want a funeral home to just
37:53take him.
37:57Funeral home called me and said that they're on their way.
38:02I don't know yet what he died of, but so many people do die of heat out here.
38:08I've seen the bad ones.
38:10I've seen the fresh ones.
38:13I just hope if I ever die at my house that I'm, like, found right away.
38:45776-1051.
38:47So, we are going to an accident right around the corner and said that one of the drivers was possibly
38:53intoxicated.
38:58So, this is interesting.
39:01Kind of one of those things, like, how does this even happen?
39:11Oh, my Lord.
39:14Hello.
39:15All righty.
39:15So, who's driving what?
39:17I looked up.
39:18They were right here in the middle of the street, and I slammed right into them.
39:23Going probably about 45.
39:25I hit them good.
39:26Okay.
39:27Do you want to come back up over here with me?
39:29Just kind of get away from the car?
39:30Yeah.
39:31No, I'm fully, like, I'll tell you.
39:33I'm the guy.
39:35You're the guy?
39:36What do you mean?
39:38I'm the one wrong.
39:39I'm sorry.
39:39I'm freaking out.
39:40It's okay, man.
39:41I'm, uh...
39:41Do you want to take a seat on the curb for a second and just kind of relax?
39:45Sure.
39:46Take a second.
39:47Relax.
39:48I'm sorry.
39:49I'm sorry.
39:49I'm shaking up.
39:50It's all right, man.
39:51I'm talking a lot.
39:51You're fine.
39:53All righty.
39:53Do you have anything to drink tonight?
39:55Yeah.
39:55Okay.
39:56Yeah.
39:56How much did you drink?
39:57Enough to f*** you up.
39:59But, yeah.
40:00Enough to f*** you up?
40:01Enough to, uh, yeah.
40:03How many are we talking?
40:04Yeah.
40:05Four or five?
40:06Enough.
40:06All right.
40:08Come walk over here for me.
40:10Are you willing to do a PBT?
40:11I'm willing to do everything.
40:14You're going to keep going until I tell you to stop, okay?
40:16All right, go ahead.
40:18Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going,
40:21keep going, keep going.
40:22Hang tight, he's terrific.
40:25Oof.
40:260.17.
40:34How are you doing?
40:35How are you doing?
40:43At least it's not your car, right?
40:45I was telling you, this thing's brand new, though.
40:47It's, like, smells new.
40:48Oh, really?
40:49Yeah.
40:51I didn't have a chance to talk to you guys.
40:52I was trying to deal with him when I first showed up.
40:55But you guys are all okay?
40:56I mean, do you need any medical attention right now?
40:59No?
40:59Okay.
41:00Well, I'm glad you guys are all good.
41:02Alrighty.
41:03Have a good night.
41:03Yeah, you too.
41:08When I got here, talked to him real quick, pretty evident.
41:11We had odor of intoxicants.
41:13I had flirt speech, red, watery bloodshot eyes, all things that kind of go into a DUI.
41:18Okay, thank you so much.
41:20Once again, sorry for taking your guys' time.
41:29Thanks again, partner.
41:30It's not my chance.
41:31Good work.
41:32All right.
41:42I do think a lot of DUIs in general happen because people just don't think they're going
41:49to get caught.
41:51I think it's definitely something that it's just easier to not drink and drive.
41:57It's not worth it, especially when you're driving in the desert at night.
42:03But just another day in Puma County.
42:13I think it's just another day in Puma County.
42:15I've seen a lot of them and even better.
