00:01President Donald Trump rallying thousands of supporters
00:04at The Villages, the world's largest retirement community
00:08located in Central Florida.
00:10He also spent a lot of time rambling on about malfunctioning microphones
00:15and the village people.
00:17This speech has not been narrowly focused.
00:21Are you worried about a senior with declining mental faculties?
00:25Don't know where he'll be happiest?
00:27Consider...
00:28The Villages
00:30Your senior should be in a secure and safe place.
00:34I should be indoors at a secure facility
00:36where I can quietly, beautifully, and safely play.
00:40At The Villages, your senior can enjoy golf,
00:43do aerobics, and give important speeches.
00:47You got fish to catch.
00:49If you catch some extra fish, enjoy it.
00:52You got plenty of fish.
00:54There are a lot of fish in the ocean.
00:57I don't know where they came up with that one, but there's a lot of fish.
01:01Plus, our experienced staff is always there to help.
01:04Whether it's trouble on the stairs or freshening him up after an accidental crap.
01:09It's The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
01:14Tonight, give it to me straight.
01:18Plus, Stephen welcomes Christopher Nolan and Dave Grohl and musical guest Bill Fikers.
01:31Featuring Louis Cato and the great big joy machine.
01:36And now, live on tape from the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City,
01:43it's Stephen Colbert!
02:04Welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome, friends, to The Late Show.
02:06I'm your host, Stephen Colbert, and to everyone watching here and at home,
02:15May the 4th be with you, because, of course, we know May the 4th is International Star Wars Day.
02:22In fact, the whole month is important to Star Wars fans,
02:25or as they call themselves, Beliebers, because the first six films all debuted in May,
02:33and this year, we're getting the first new Star Wars film in theater since 2019,
02:38Star Wars, The Mandalorian, and Grogu.
02:44Obviously, I'm thrilled that Baby Yoda is getting a spin-off,
02:47but I'm worried he's going to end up like all child stars.
02:56DUI, rehab, then hosting his own Netflix dating show, Grogu's Bang Boy Beach.
03:03Grogu's, Grogu's, Grogu's, Grogu's.
03:07This new Star Wars film has plenty of big names,
03:09because Jeremy Allen White will star, and this is true,
03:13he is starring as Jabba the Hutt's son.
03:18Oh. Yes, chef.
03:24Jabba, Jabba.
03:25I wouldn't...
03:27It wouldn't be Star Wars without toys and tie-ins.
03:29For this movie, Burger King has rolled items out like
03:33BBQ Bounty Whopper and Imperial Cheddar Ranch Tots,
03:38and Nabiska was launching Grogu Nilla Nummies,
03:42an amazing treat for any kid who's always wanted to eat Grogu's.
03:47Eggs?
03:50Skin? Poop? We're not sure.
03:53I don't think this one was cleared over at Skywalker Ranch,
03:56but today, and this is absolutely true,
04:00Pornhub updated their logo
04:01to include the symbol of the Rebel Alliance,
04:06which makes sense.
04:06Everybody loves Star Wars-themed pornos,
04:09like Obi-Wan can moan me,
04:14R2DD2,
04:15and, of course,
04:17Hand Solo.
04:20In this one,
04:22Hand definitely shoots first.
04:25But
04:25stars aren't the only place.
04:28The stars...
04:29Okay.
04:30Everybody stay calm.
04:32Of course,
04:33the stars aren't the only place.
04:34There's a war.
04:35There's also one in Iran.
04:37Well...
04:37Good segue!
04:46Thank you, Graphics Department.
04:48Well,
04:49over the weekend,
04:50Iran submitted a 14-point plan
04:52to end the war.
04:53It's pretty one-sided.
04:55They propose that both sides
04:56lift their blockades
04:58of the Strait of Hormuz,
04:59Israel completely end the war in Lebanon,
05:01the U.S. release Iran's frozen assets,
05:04require the U.S. to pay compensation,
05:06and lift all sanctions against Tehran.
05:08In addition,
05:09Iran would get
05:10the new grand theft auto,
05:13free guacamole
05:14and participating in Chipotles,
05:15and a hall pass
05:17to sleep with Lady of Liberty's sister, Tammy.
05:21Tammy's fun.
05:22Tammy's way more fun.
05:24Trump rejected the offer,
05:26and yesterday,
05:26he posted this image saying,
05:28I have all the cards.
05:32Which,
05:32you may have seen this,
05:33is cool,
05:34except you might notice
05:35the cards Trump is holding
05:37are from the game Uno,
05:39where, quite famously,
05:40the object is to get rid
05:42of all your cards.
05:44I have so many cards.
05:45No, I have so many cards.
05:46Look at this.
05:47I have so many cards.
05:49This idiot over here.
05:51Just...
05:51Hold on.
05:53There we go.
05:54Here we go.
05:58This idiot over here
05:59just played a draw four,
06:00and I get to draw four more.
06:02I got so many cards.
06:04I got the three of hearts.
06:05I got the blockbuster membership.
06:08Charizard.
06:11The longer this goes on,
06:14just the worst things get
06:15for average consumers.
06:17Last week,
06:18crude oil hit a wartime high,
06:20trading above $126.
06:22And I'd say Iran has America
06:24over a barrel,
06:25but we can't afford a barrel?
06:28Can we do this over a bucket?
06:31As a result, today,
06:33the average price of gas hit $4.46 a gallon.
06:38God knows what it's doing
06:39to the price of grass and ass.
06:44But, come on.
06:46Ask your parents.
06:47Ask your grandparents.
06:49But you got to give it to President Trump.
06:50He campaigned on $2 gas,
06:52and now he's delivering
06:53more than twice what he promised.
06:56One Wall Street trader...
07:02Did my own.
07:03Did my own.
07:04One Wall Street trader
07:05explained why oil prices
07:06suddenly spiked.
07:07They thought this crisis
07:08in the strait
07:10would be short-lived
07:11due to the infamous taco
07:12or Trump always chickens out.
07:15But it turned into...
07:16It turned into a nacho,
07:18which stands for
07:19Not a Chance Hormuz Opens.
07:22Well, if I may,
07:24I'd like to suggest
07:25my own acronym,
07:26carnitas.
07:28Which stands for
07:29Can Anyone Recommend Nursing Home?
07:31I Think His A-Brain-sploded.
07:36This...
07:40I don't know what that is,
07:42but that's very pretty.
07:44The high price of fuel
07:46took its toll this weekend
07:47because yesterday,
07:48Spirit Airlines shut down.
07:51Oh, no.
07:52I have three more weeks
07:53of shows to do.
07:56Now I won't have
07:57Spirit Airlines jokes?
07:58Quick, somebody check on Arby's.
08:02The Spirit Airlines
08:04of shaved beef.
08:11Spirit announced
08:13their immediate closure
08:14in a statement saying
08:15all flights have been canceled
08:16and customer service
08:17is no longer available,
08:20which, coincidentally,
08:21was also Spirit's motto.
08:24One more for the road, baby!
08:32So, Spirit is gone.
08:35But there are still plenty
08:36of safe and reliable airlines
08:38out there, like United.
08:40What's new with them?
08:43Well, yesterday,
08:44a United Airlines plane
08:46struck a bakery truck
08:47on the New Jersey turnpike.
08:49I know that sounds bad,
08:50but trust me,
08:51it looks so much worse.
08:54I'm gonna show you
08:55the dash cam footage
08:56of the bakery truck,
08:58but first,
08:58I just wanna stress,
08:59everyone's okay.
09:00Which is surprising,
09:02because check this out.
09:03Dash cam footage
09:04shows the moment
09:05a truck is struck.
09:08As the United Airlines flight
09:10approached Newark Liberty
09:11International Airport
09:12Sunday afternoon.
09:13If you look closely,
09:14you can see what appears
09:15to be the wheel of the plane
09:17out the driver's window.
09:19Okay, that is...
09:20I know that is shocking,
09:21but don't forget,
09:21this accident was predicted
09:2325 years ago
09:24by the opening
09:25of The Sopranos.
09:27Look at this.
09:32Thankfully,
09:34thankfully,
09:34neither the driver
09:36or anyone on the plane
09:37was hurt,
09:37and investigators
09:38are still trying to figure out
09:39what happened,
09:40but I think I found a clue.
09:41It turns out,
09:42this flight was arriving
09:43from Italy's Marco Polo Airport.
09:48Well, there's your answer.
09:50Okay, okay, tower.
09:52Okay, tower.
09:53Tower, we are coming in
09:54for landing.
09:55I'm just gonna
09:55put on my blindfold.
10:00Marco.
10:03Marco, please respond, Polo.
10:05Mmm.
10:07Mmm, I smell dinner rolls.
10:11Well, Spirit Airlines
10:13isn't the only iconic company
10:14we lost this weekend,
10:15because after nearly 30 years
10:17of service,
10:18Ask Jeeves has shut down.
10:21If you're unfamiliar
10:22with Ask Jeeves,
10:24which went on
10:24to become Ask.com,
10:26it was an internet search engine
10:27originally depicted
10:28as a snooty British butler
10:30who was later 3D-rendered
10:32and rebranded apparently
10:33as a pervert
10:34who liked to watch.
10:38In a statement,
10:40in a statement,
10:41Jeeves' parent company said,
10:42To you,
10:43the millions of users
10:44who turn to us
10:45for answers
10:46in a rapidly changing world,
10:48thank you for your
10:49endless curiosity,
10:50your loyalty,
10:51and your trust.
10:52Well, thanks a lot, Jeeves.
10:54That's what I was gonna say
10:55on my last show.
10:57We got a great show
10:58for you tonight.
11:00My guests are Christopher Nolan
11:02and Dave Bull,
11:03but when we come back,
11:05we'll check in
11:06on some of my favorite puppies.
11:08Enjoy this, Carson.
11:31Hey, everybody.
11:33Welcome back.
11:34Give it up for Louis Kato
11:36and the great big drawing machine.
11:42Folks,
11:43it's time I finally came clean
11:45on a controversial issue.
11:47I love dogs.
11:48And I don't care who knows.
11:51Cancel me.
11:52In fact,
11:53I love dogs so much,
11:54I've done a long-running segment
11:56on the show called
11:57Rescue Dog Rescue
11:58where we help find homes
11:59for real rescue dogs
12:00by having a celebrity guest
12:02join me to tell flattering lies
12:04about the dogs
12:05to make them even
12:06that much more attractive.
12:07And I'm proud to say
12:09that every dog
12:10we have featured
12:10has been adopted.
12:12But...
12:16But...
12:18Now...
12:19Now with the show
12:20coming to an end,
12:21I've been wondering
12:22what exactly happened
12:23to all those dogs?
12:24Well, it turns out
12:26they're living good lives
12:27with nice people
12:27who took them in,
12:28which is boring.
12:30So...
12:31After years of lying
12:32about dogs
12:33to find them a home,
12:34I think it's time
12:34to lie to you
12:35one last time
12:36about where those
12:37actual dogs are today.
12:39This is Rescue Dog Rescue,
12:42Where Arf They Now?
12:51Over the past decade,
12:53this segment has found
12:54loving homes
12:55for so many adorable mutts,
12:57from Luna
12:57to Denise
12:58to Nick Offerman.
13:01Don't forget to spay
13:02and or neuter your Nick.
13:05So let's catch up
13:06on what some of these
13:07lovable puppies
13:08have been up to.
13:09First up is Nugget.
13:10After appearing on the show,
13:12he earned his master's
13:13and black belt in karate.
13:16You gotta respect
13:17his work ethic,
13:18because if you don't,
13:19he'll do this to your face.
13:22Then there was Biscuit.
13:23She was on the show
13:24with Seth Rogen.
13:25Biscuit moved to Connecticut
13:26with her new family,
13:27where she took up gardening.
13:29She's been called
13:30the Martha Steward of Dogs,
13:31because she also went to prison
13:33for insider trading.
13:35Then there was the dog
13:37we referred to as
13:38Name Redacted.
13:39Mark Hamill explained why.
13:41I'd love to tell you
13:41his real name,
13:42but he's in witness protection
13:44after testifying
13:45against a murderous drug dealer.
13:48Well, after seeing that episode,
13:49the cartel found her.
13:51And in order to save
13:52her own life,
13:53she had to, let's say,
13:55respond with extreme prejudice.
13:57She now runs
13:58the largest cocaine operation
14:00on the Eastern Seaboard.
14:01Who's a bad girl?
14:03You are?
14:04Yes, you are!
14:06And, of course, Laura.
14:08She was on the show
14:09alongside Dua Lipa.
14:11Dua Lipa encouraged Laura
14:13to try acting,
14:14and now Laura is living out
14:15her dream,
14:16playing Simba
14:17in the touring company
14:18of The Lion King.
14:20Reviewers raved,
14:21I think one of the actors
14:22was a dog.
14:23And Hakuna Matoto?
14:25And when I went,
14:27Simba kept humping Pumbaa.
14:30Then there was Midge.
14:31Midge appeared
14:32with Ryan Reynolds.
14:34Today, Midge runs
14:35her own tattoo parlor,
14:36and her work is
14:38really something.
14:40It can be a little messy,
14:41but no one could be mad at Midge
14:43because she's too cute.
14:45Also, she makes her client
14:46sign a waiver.
14:48This is Bartleby.
14:50His appearance proved
14:51to be so captivating
14:52that he is now
14:53the subject of a new documentary
14:54by acclaimed filmmaker
14:56Werner Herzog.
14:57Behold, the animal
14:59known as Bartleby.
15:02By day, he protects
15:04his owners
15:05by screaming at squirrels.
15:08By night, he frees
15:10his mind
15:12by drinking
15:13from the toilet
15:14of madness.
15:16This is Baxter.
15:18In 2024,
15:19he was held by
15:20people's sexiest man alive,
15:22Chris Evans.
15:23And today?
15:24Well, these days,
15:25Baxter spends most
15:26of his time
15:27just sitting around
15:28thinking about that moment.
15:29Because honestly,
15:31wouldn't you?
15:32Then there was Dakota,
15:34who was on the show
15:35with Daniel Radcliffe.
15:36Well, that night,
15:37after the show,
15:38there was an incident
15:39with an electrical
15:40transformer backstage,
15:41and the two ended up
15:42switching bodies.
15:45Please help me.
15:46It's Daniel Radcliffe.
15:47I'm trapped in here,
15:48and I don't know
15:49where my body is.
15:50Anybody?
15:51Help!
15:55Oh, crap!
15:58Finally, there was Norbert.
16:00Norbert was the only dog
16:01to appear on the show
16:02three times.
16:04Unfortunately,
16:05during that time,
16:05Norbert stole about
16:07$40 million
16:07from the Late Show budget
16:09and won't tell anyone
16:10where he buried it.
16:11Well, that does it
16:13for Rescue Dog Rescue.
16:14I'm happy to say
16:15we were able to find homes
16:16for absolutely every dog
16:18that we presented
16:18for adoption.
16:19Bye-bye,
16:20my furry friends,
16:21and thanks for only
16:22occasionally peeing on me.
16:25I want to thank
16:26North Shore Animal League
16:27America.
16:28Go check them out.
16:30And thanks to all
16:31the stars who helped out
16:32with Rescue Dog Rescue.
16:34And, of course,
16:34thanks to the dogs.
16:36We couldn't have done it
16:37without you.
16:37It would have made
16:38absolutely no sense.
16:40We'll be right back
16:41with Christopher Nolan.
17:03Hey, welcome back, everybody.
17:05Ladies and gentlemen,
17:06my first guest tonight
17:09is the Oscar-winning
17:10producer, writer,
17:11and director
17:12of such films
17:13as The Dark Knight,
17:14Dunkirk,
17:15and Oppenheimer.
17:16Please welcome back
17:17to the Late Show
17:18Christopher Nolan.
17:36Yes.
17:41Nice to see you again.
17:43Nice to be back here.
17:44Last time we spoke
17:45was at Princeton
17:46at the Institute
17:47for Advanced Studies
17:48in Einstein's office.
17:50Yes.
17:50And here we are
17:51in the Ed Sullivan.
17:52Do you want to compare
17:52the vibes?
17:55I mean,
17:56the intellect is still here.
17:57You feel the waves
17:59of history coming
18:00off the walls
18:00in a slightly different way.
18:02But, no,
18:03that was a fun time.
18:03That was a really cool thing
18:05to be able to be there
18:06in Einstein's office
18:06talking about everything.
18:08Yeah, unbelievable.
18:09We took the Colbert bump
18:10right the way
18:11to the Oscars.
18:11You're welcome.
18:12Thank you very much
18:12for that.
18:13You're welcome.
18:13Anytime.
18:15There you go.
18:17Cheers.
18:18Cheers.
18:18Cheers.
18:19There you go.
18:20Okay, Oppenheimer,
18:21as you said,
18:21won seven Academy Awards,
18:22including Best Picture
18:23and Best Director.
18:25You chose to follow it up
18:26with just a small,
18:28not showy story.
18:30Yes.
18:32Just the bedrock
18:33of Western literature.
18:36The story of stories,
18:37The Odyssey.
18:39What was it about?
18:43I assume you're also
18:44a fan of the Iliad,
18:45but what is it about Homer?
18:47Why did you want to tackle
18:48this particular story?
18:50I mean, you're always looking
18:51for something
18:52that hasn't been done before.
18:53And Greek mythology,
18:55even though so many of us
18:56are familiar with it,
18:57you know,
18:58from when we're kids
18:59and the way in which
19:00it's the underpinnings
19:01of all stories,
19:02as you say,
19:03in Western literature.
19:04But it hadn't really been done
19:05on a big scale.
19:06I mean, I grew up
19:07with movies by greats
19:09like Ray Harryhausen
19:11and Clash of the Titans,
19:12things like that.
19:12But it hadn't really been done
19:13on a kind of
19:14a budget,
19:15big studio,
19:16you know,
19:17throw everything at the screen
19:18and see what sticks
19:19kind of way.
19:20And that's the kind of gap
19:22you're looking for
19:22as a filmmaker.
19:23It's like,
19:23how can we get in there
19:24and really try and bring
19:26something new for audiences?
19:27It's just one of the
19:28great adventure stories
19:29and I really wanted
19:31to see it done justice.
19:32So we just sort of dove in.
19:34And the story itself has,
19:36and the Iliad,
19:37have such depth behind them
19:40and implied depth.
19:42Basically,
19:42the Greek myths
19:42are all paying off
19:43in the Iliad and the Odyssey.
19:44A lot of scores
19:45are being settled
19:46between the gods
19:46with each other.
19:47And I know you don't want
19:48to give anything away
19:50about the film,
19:50but are there gods in it?
19:52Is there any of the supernatural?
19:54Because Troy,
19:55Troy, like the movie Troy,
19:56it had none of the gods in it.
19:58Do you have any
19:58of the gods in it?
20:00I don't really want
20:01to give anything away.
20:02I mean,
20:03I know it's weird
20:04to talk about spoilers
20:05on a 3,000-year-old
20:06piece of literature,
20:07but a lot of,
20:09but a lot of the way,
20:11as you, as you...
20:12New New Testament,
20:13has it got that Jesus guy in it?
20:14You got that Jesus guy
20:15in New Testament?
20:16Okay, Matt Damon
20:17plays the title character,
20:19Odysseus.
20:19You've worked with him before
20:20in Interstellar,
20:22Oppenheimer,
20:22and those are both
20:24great roles,
20:25but supporting roles
20:26in that.
20:27Why'd you risk one
20:28on Damon?
20:29Why did you...
20:30Yes, he's talented.
20:31Yes, he's handsome.
20:32Yes, he's intelligent,
20:33but...
20:34We tried him out
20:34a couple of times.
20:35Okay, yeah.
20:36Yeah, you know,
20:37just to see
20:38and everything.
20:39And, no, I mean, look,
20:40the great thing
20:41about working with
20:42people who are just
20:43incredibly good
20:44at what they do,
20:44like Matt is,
20:45just one of the greats.
20:47I got to do
20:48a couple movies
20:49with him
20:49and then I got
20:51really that thrill
20:52of being able
20:52to call him up
20:53and say,
20:54how about Odysseus?
20:55And, you know,
20:56it's a one-word pitch.
20:57It's right there.
20:58And I warned him.
20:59I said,
21:00it's going to be very hard.
21:01And he's like,
21:02yeah, I know, I know, I know.
21:03I said, no,
21:03it's going to be
21:05very hard.
21:06He says it's the hardest
21:07film he's ever made.
21:09I think for all of us,
21:10it was an incredibly
21:11challenging movie
21:12in all the right ways.
21:12I mean,
21:13I like to say
21:13it was a nightmare
21:14in all the right ways.
21:15It's just,
21:16it's a lot to take on.
21:18It's the Odyssey.
21:19It's the greatest epic
21:21in literature.
21:22And so,
21:23it should be difficult.
21:25We did want to get out there
21:26and really try
21:26and do a lot of these things
21:27for real,
21:28really get out there
21:29on the seas,
21:30climb the mountains,
21:31go in the caves,
21:32all of that.
21:32You got all the gods
21:33to deal with.
21:33Ah, here you go.
21:35There you go.
21:37In one way or another,
21:39there's certain odds
21:40towards that.
21:42Would you be
21:42comfortable in revealing
21:44whether you shot this film
21:45in order,
21:46like in order of the story?
21:48Would you be,
21:48would you tell us that?
21:50Well, the story's written
21:51in a nonlinear way.
21:52It's the original
21:53kind of nonlinear narrative.
21:54You start,
21:55you know,
21:56kind of halfway
21:56through the story.
21:57He's telling a lot
21:58of the story to,
21:59like,
22:00in the Nausicaa's
22:00father's palace
22:01or something like that.
22:02Well,
22:02what we're jumping off
22:04from is the Ithacus.
22:05We start in Ithaca.
22:06We start with
22:07the Song of Odysseus.
22:09We start with this story.
22:10Everyone is sitting there
22:11going,
22:11okay,
22:12we know the Trojan War
22:13ended 10 years ago.
22:15Where is he?
22:16He hasn't come back.
22:17He left 20 years ago.
22:18And things are not
22:19altogether wonderful
22:20in his kingdom.
22:21Because Penelope's
22:22having to put off
22:22all these suitors
22:23who want to be
22:24the new king.
22:25Exactly.
22:25So Penelope's
22:26played by Anne Hathaway,
22:27who I've also worked with
22:28a couple times before.
22:30Um,
22:32and, uh...
22:33Did you catch
22:33that Devil Wears Prada movie?
22:34I watched it last night.
22:35It was fabulous.
22:36Yeah, fantastic.
22:37With Emily Blunt
22:38as well and everything.
22:39Yeah, terrific.
22:40And, uh,
22:41her son is played
22:42by Tom Holland,
22:43who's also amazing.
22:45Who I've not
22:46worked with before,
22:47but, uh,
22:48would love to work with again.
22:49I mean,
22:49he's just an incredible talent,
22:51as everybody else
22:52but me knew
22:52before I sort of
22:53got into it with him.
22:54But he's so,
22:55so great.
22:56Uh,
22:56and they're,
22:57you know,
22:58holding the fault
22:58in Ithaca,
22:59fending off the suitors,
23:00the lead suitors
23:01played by, uh,
23:02Rob Pattinson,
23:03who I've also
23:04worked with before.
23:05Um,
23:06and, uh,
23:07yeah,
23:07so it really is a story
23:09about,
23:10about ultimately
23:10about Homecoming,
23:11about can he get home?
23:13She was Catwoman.
23:14He was Spider-Man.
23:15He was the Batman.
23:17Like, if, if...
23:18And we have Jason Bourne
23:19as well.
23:20Oh, yeah.
23:20Is it Jason Bourne?
23:21Would we,
23:22like,
23:22are superheroes
23:23directly related
23:24to these sort of
23:25Greek heroes?
23:26Very directly.
23:26They are.
23:27I mean,
23:28I mean,
23:28they're the original,
23:29the original superheroes.
23:31And a lot of,
23:32I mean,
23:32even comic book culture,
23:33whether you're talking
23:34about Marvel or DC
23:35or all the rest,
23:35a lot of it comes
23:36pretty directly
23:37from the Homeric epics.
23:39And the thing
23:39about Homer is
23:40nobody knows
23:42if that was a person.
23:43You know,
23:44they don't know.
23:44I mean,
23:44Homer, in a way,
23:45is the sort of
23:46George Lucas,
23:47maybe,
23:48of his time.
23:49I mean,
23:49nobody really knows
23:50who this person was
23:50or whether it was
23:51more than one person.
23:52We don't even know
23:53if Homer was
23:53Homer's name.
23:54Exactly.
23:55After all,
23:55Ovid was Ovid's
23:57middle name,
23:58so you never can tell.
23:59Well,
23:59there you go.
23:59You're pulling rank again.
24:00But that's,
24:01yes.
24:03I don't have to tell you.
24:04Oh, man,
24:05you don't have to tell me
24:06because I wouldn't know
24:06what the hell
24:07you were saying.
24:07But...
24:11Absolutely.
24:12I mean,
24:12the thing about Homer
24:13is, yeah,
24:14it's the marvel
24:15of its day.
24:16I mean,
24:16that's the thing.
24:17And so,
24:17I think there's
24:18very directly
24:19this desire
24:21for us
24:21to feel
24:22or believe
24:22that gods
24:23could walk
24:23amongst us.
24:24And I think
24:25the modern comic book
24:26is kind of
24:27our expression
24:28of that.
24:29We have an
24:29unusual treat.
24:31Christopher Nolan
24:31and our friends
24:33at Universal.
24:33Hello,
24:34Universal.
24:35Have brought us
24:36a brand new trailer.
24:37No one's seen this,
24:38right?
24:39No.
24:39Okay,
24:39for The Odyssey.
24:41Absolutely not.
24:42So,
24:46we're gonna roll this
24:47for you
24:47and for the people
24:48at home.
24:49And don't go anywhere
24:50because we'll be right back
24:51right after this is over
24:52with more Christopher Nolan.
24:54Anything we need
24:54to set up here?
24:55Not if I've done
24:56my job right.
24:59Let's find out.
25:05Yvonne.
25:18Tell me what you remember.
25:23A wife.
25:29A son.
25:33A son.
25:34A son.
25:34A son.
25:37We won no more.
25:45Help me go home.
25:51This is a household
25:52waiting for Master.
25:56I want you to choose me.
26:01Ithacus King
26:02is coming back.
26:03No,
26:04he's not.
26:10What would he do
26:11if he came back here
26:12and find all these
26:12suitors in his house?
26:16You're pining
26:17for a daddy
26:18you didn't even know.
26:19Like some
26:20sniffling bastard.
26:23who's looking after
26:24your wife and son?
26:26Do you see?
26:28My dad is coming home.
26:31Bringing vengeance.
26:35Bringing it all.
26:37Let's go!
26:51I need everyone
26:52in this party dead.
26:55I can still save them.
26:59You're a man
27:00who needs to control
27:01his fate.
27:04But you cannot
27:05control this.
27:07That world
27:08is gone.
27:12No one could stand
27:14between me
27:15and home.
27:18I need the
27:19gods.
27:22Keep us free!
27:31I think it's
27:33asleep.
27:52Kiddo.
27:53It appears
27:54you did your job
27:55right.
27:57Now,
27:57an unbelievable
27:58cast.
27:59Besides Damon,
28:01Anne Hathaway,
28:01Tom Holland,
28:02Robert Pattinson,
28:03Charlize Theron,
28:04John Leguizamo.
28:06Who haven't we seen?
28:07Anybody you want
28:07to tell us
28:08about that's not
28:08in that little show?
28:09We haven't seen
28:10Lupita Nyong'o
28:11and we haven't
28:12seen Zendaya.
28:15Corey Hawkins.
28:16Just a ton
28:18of other talent.
28:18I mean,
28:19it's an incredible
28:21cast and they
28:23just work so hard
28:24for the movie
28:25and really
28:26deliver the goods
28:27for me.
28:27I mean,
28:27it was a thrill
28:28to work with them all.
28:29I think I caught
28:30a glimpse of fur
28:31in there.
28:33Is that
28:33Odysseus' dog,
28:34Argos?
28:35It is indeed.
28:36Wow.
28:36Which is one
28:37of the greatest
28:38moments in the
28:39whole story.
28:40No spoilers.
28:41No spoilers.
28:43No spoilers.
28:44But yes,
28:45it is one
28:45of the greatest
28:46moments in the story.
28:47It's really
28:47one of the things
28:48that hooked me.
28:49I'm a new dog owner.
28:51Oh, really?
28:51That's nice.
28:52Yes.
28:54Like, new to dogs?
28:56New to dogs.
28:56Or a new dog?
28:57I'd never had
28:57a dog growing up.
28:59Didn't have a dog
29:00when my kids
29:00were young.
29:01We denied that.
29:02And as soon
29:03as they left
29:03for college,
29:03we got a dog.
29:05And then I thought...
29:07How do they feel
29:07about that?
29:07They were a little
29:08bitter, but they love
29:11the dog, too,
29:12when they get to visit.
29:14And I decided
29:15to do the Odyssey
29:15because it is the
29:16ultimate dog story.
29:19The film was shot
29:21entirely...
29:21It's the first film
29:22shot entirely
29:23on IMAX cameras.
29:24Yes.
29:24Okay, what does that
29:25mean to you as a director?
29:26A, why'd you want
29:27to do that,
29:28and what are the
29:28challenges of that?
29:29I fell in love
29:30with IMAX film
29:30when I was about 16.
29:33Going to films
29:35at the Museum of Science
29:36and Industry in Chicago,
29:37like documentaries
29:38that were shot on IMAX.
29:39And I always felt like,
29:41what if you, you know,
29:42told a giant Hollywood
29:44story in this format?
29:45So on the Dark Knight,
29:46I convinced the studio,
29:47I convinced IMAX
29:48to let us try
29:49and do our action sequences,
29:51which we did,
29:51just the action scenes
29:54on IMAX.
29:55And then over the years,
29:56I've tried to use
29:57the format kind of
29:57more and more,
29:59you know,
29:59things like Interstellar
30:00and Oppenheim
30:01and everything.
30:01We tried to do
30:01more and more
30:02of the film.
30:03But what I always
30:03wanted to do
30:04was do the entire movie
30:05that way.
30:06Couldn't do it
30:07because the cameras
30:08are so noisy.
30:09As the software solutions
30:11that are filtering
30:12out camera noise
30:12got better,
30:13I did tests
30:14with some of the stuff
30:14I'd shot with Kylian
30:15and Oppenheimer.
30:16IMAX camera's very close
30:18and he's speaking
30:18and we had ADR'd it.
30:20And I could uncover
30:21his original dialogue,
30:23but he was shouting
30:24over the camera.
30:25So it was the wrong
30:26performance.
30:27And that's the problem
30:28is what we needed
30:29was a way
30:30to get a camera,
30:31get an IMAX camera
30:32that you could actually
30:33shoot the dialogue.
30:34It could be as close
30:34as we are
30:35and you could perform
30:37in front of it.
30:37And so we challenged
30:38IMAX to do that.
30:39We said,
30:40we're doing the Odyssey.
30:41This is the story.
30:43If ever there were a story
30:44where you want to do
30:44the whole thing on IMAX,
30:45this is it.
30:46So can you find a way
30:47to build an enclosure
30:48for the camera?
30:49You know,
30:50they build us new cameras.
30:51They build us this box
30:52that you put the camera in.
30:53I mean,
30:53it's giant.
30:54It weighs about 400 pounds,
30:55but it silenced the camera.
30:58So we could,
30:59you know,
30:59do very intimate scenes.
31:01It's a new type of camera
31:02that's for shot on.
31:02Brand new camera.
31:03Is this called
31:04the Nolan now?
31:06It is not.
31:08Actually,
31:08it's called the Keeley
31:09and it's named after
31:10my friend David Keeley
31:12who sadly passed
31:14just as we were
31:16finishing the dailies
31:16on this film
31:17before we edited it.
31:18And he had been
31:19my IMAX mentor
31:20for, you know,
31:21almost 20 years.
31:22And he's the guy
31:23who made so much
31:24of what we've done possible.
31:26And proud to say
31:27that he,
31:28before he passed,
31:29he was able to finish
31:30approving all of our
31:31last dailies
31:32and printing those.
31:33And we miss him greatly,
31:34but I'm thrilled.
31:42I'm absolutely thrilled
31:44that he's memorialized
31:45in the name of this
31:46brand new camera,
31:47which is,
31:48it's,
31:49I mean,
31:49IMAX film
31:50is the highest quality
31:51imaging format
31:52that's ever been built.
31:53Well, Christopher,
31:54thanks so much
31:55for being here.
31:55Always a pleasure to talk.
31:57The Odyssey
31:58will be on theaters
31:59on July 17th.
32:01Christopher Nolan,
32:02everybody.
32:02We'll be right back
32:03with Dave Grohl.
32:19Welcome back.
32:20Safe.
32:22My next guest
32:24is a 19-time
32:26Grammy Award-winning
32:27Rock and Roll Hall of Famer
32:28from Foo Fighters
32:29and Nirvana.
32:30Please welcome
32:30back to The Late Show,
32:32Dave Grohl.
32:54Nice to see you again.
32:55Hey, man.
32:56How you been?
32:57We're good.
32:58Foo Fighters
32:59have been together
33:01for 31 years.
33:02That's true.
33:03Okay.
33:05Was there a specific moment
33:07when you knew
33:09you were ready
33:10to start a new band
33:11after Nirvana?
33:12Well,
33:14yes,
33:14there actually was.
33:15There was,
33:17when Nirvana ended,
33:18I wasn't sure
33:19what to do.
33:20I didn't know
33:21if I wanted
33:21to continue playing music.
33:24It made me sad
33:25to think
33:26of playing
33:28in another band.
33:30Losing Nirvana,
33:31losing Kurt
33:31was a really,
33:33really dark,
33:34emotional experience.
33:36And so,
33:37I thought,
33:38you know,
33:38I just need
33:38to get my head together.
33:39And I rented a car
33:41and drove around
33:42the Ring of Kerry
33:44in Ireland.
33:45And I was out.
33:46It's so gorgeous.
33:47One of the most
33:48beautiful places
33:48in the world.
33:49I was driving
33:50on this country road,
33:51and there were like sheep
33:52and it was a great day.
33:54And then the green
33:55rolling hills.
33:56And all I wanted
33:57to do was disappear.
33:59And as I was
34:00driving down
34:01this country road,
34:03I see a hitchhiker
34:06and he had
34:07a Kurt Cobain
34:08t-shirt on.
34:10And
34:12to me,
34:13I thought,
34:13okay,
34:14this is the universe
34:14telling me
34:15you have to continue.
34:18Like,
34:18you have to move on.
34:19You have to go forward.
34:20Music has always
34:21been the love
34:22of my life.
34:23It's helped me
34:23through some
34:24of my most difficult moments.
34:26And when I saw
34:28the kid
34:29with the
34:30Kurt Cobain t-shirt,
34:31I thought,
34:32okay,
34:33I need to keep going.
34:35I have so much reverence
34:37and respect
34:38for the past,
34:39but I need
34:39to have a future.
34:41And that's kind
34:41of where it began.
34:43Well...
34:46Last year,
34:49last year,
34:49Nirvana reunited
34:50for two performances,
34:51Fire Aid,
34:52Fire Aid Benefit in LA
34:53and SNL 50.
34:55Yeah.
34:56You guys don't
34:57do that very often.
34:58No.
34:59What is it like
35:00when y'all get
35:01together to,
35:02you know,
35:03breathe life
35:04back into those songs?
35:05Well, again,
35:06you know,
35:06I think sometimes
35:07when people think
35:08of bands,
35:08they just think
35:09of instruments
35:09and songs
35:10and stuff.
35:11But it really is,
35:12it's this connection
35:13of people
35:14and life experience
35:15and relationships,
35:17you know,
35:17with other human beings.
35:19And then you put
35:19on guitars
35:20and play music
35:21and that translates
35:22your love
35:23and respect
35:24and the relationship
35:25you have
35:25with the other person
35:26really comes
35:26through the music.
35:27So with Nirvana,
35:28it's like,
35:28oh, my God,
35:29we went through
35:30some crazy stuff.
35:33And so when we
35:34get together to play,
35:35it's a really,
35:37it's a wild experience.
35:38Because when it's me
35:39and Chris Novoselich
35:40and Pat Smear,
35:42when we sit down
35:43and like start
35:44into Smells Like Teen Spirit
35:46in a small room,
35:47it's like,
35:48dude, it's,
35:49nobody else makes
35:50that noise.
35:51It sounds like
35:52Smells Like Teen Spirit.
35:53And you're just like,
35:55and we don't do it often.
35:57And so when it does
35:58come around,
35:59it's like a comet.
36:00It's like this comet
36:00is coming back around
36:01and you see it streak by
36:02and it's like,
36:03and then it's just
36:05like,
36:06you know,
36:07it's great.
36:08Well,
36:10Foo Fighters
36:11have a new album,
36:12Your Favorite Toy,
36:13the band's 12th studio album.
36:15How'd you land on the name
36:16of this album,
36:17Your Favorite Toy?
36:17You know,
36:18it's funny,
36:18there's a song
36:20that's called
36:20Your Favorite Toy,
36:22but when I first wrote it,
36:24it was called
36:25For Good.
36:26And there's a line
36:28that says,
36:29get back here,
36:30that boy,
36:31someone threw away
36:32your favorite toy
36:33for good.
36:33And I'm like,
36:34wow,
36:35okay,
36:35For Good,
36:35that's such a great name
36:36that has it,
36:37but,
36:38and like a week later,
36:39I see the Wicked movie
36:40comes out,
36:41I'm like,
36:41man,
36:41what the,
36:43damn!
36:44Yeah.
36:45Took it!
36:46Yeah,
36:46you could have surfed
36:47that wave,
36:47though,
36:47you could have gotten
36:48right in on that,
36:49that Wicked,
36:50that Wicked audience.
36:50I feel like people
36:51would have bought this
36:52thinking it was that
36:53or bought that
36:53thinking it was this
36:54and it would just be
36:55kind of a mess.
36:55That's true,
36:56exactly.
36:57Foo Fighters on tour
36:59this summer.
36:59It's been 40 years
37:00since Little You
37:02went out on tour,
37:03because you were
37:03a teenager.
37:04Yeah.
37:04The first time,
37:05Little You went on tour
37:06for the first time.
37:07Is,
37:08is it more enjoyable
37:09now that you're not
37:10couch surfing?
37:12Big time.
37:14No,
37:14I mean,
37:15as I said earlier,
37:16you know,
37:16it's those early years
37:17and those early experiences.
37:19But room service.
37:19Like when I was here
37:20with my mom.
37:21Oh, yeah,
37:22that was wonderful
37:22to meet your mom, yeah.
37:23My mother wrote a book
37:24years ago
37:25and she and I
37:27sat on the couch
37:28and did an interview
37:29here at the studio.
37:32And,
37:34you know,
37:35my mother
37:36was such
37:37an incredible person.
37:39She was a public
37:40school teacher
37:40for 35 years.
37:42She was...
37:45And she was,
37:47she was such
37:48a brilliant,
37:49kind,
37:50compassionate,
37:51empathetic,
37:52altruistic,
37:53funny,
37:54charming,
37:54sweet,
37:56just the coolest,
37:57the coolest person
37:58I've ever met in my life.
38:00She was a teacher
38:01at my high school.
38:03And I wasn't good
38:04at high school.
38:06I wasn't good
38:07at elementary school
38:07either, actually.
38:08We brought my report
38:10cards when we were here.
38:10Anyway,
38:11but she was so cool
38:12that she realized
38:15I was just terrible
38:16at school.
38:18She also realized
38:19I wasn't, like,
38:20a complete,
38:24I'm not going to say
38:24the word,
38:25but she understood,
38:27like, okay,
38:28there's something
38:28you'll be able
38:29to figure life out.
38:30She thought,
38:31she had faith in me
38:31that I could do that.
38:32So I left
38:33to go on tour
38:34when I was 17 years old,
38:35and it was basically
38:36me asking my mother,
38:39hey,
38:39I have an opportunity
38:40to tour the world.
38:42I want to leave school.
38:44And she said,
38:45you should go do that
38:46because you suck
38:47at school.
38:49And here we are,
38:5040 years later.
38:52Well, congratulations
38:53on finding the thing
38:54you don't suck at.
38:54Thanks, man.
38:57Stick around
38:58for a performance
38:59by the Foo Fighters.
39:01It's Dave Grohl, everybody.
39:02Thank you, Dave.
39:12performing Caught in the Echo
39:14from their new album,
39:15Your Favorite Toy.
39:16Ladies and gentlemen,
39:17Foo Fighters.
39:31This is just a chance
39:34of a broken broadcast system
39:37because it is an evaluation
39:41of my own installation
39:43because this is not a chance
39:46This is a conversation
39:50I've got another proposition
39:53Only under one condition
39:59I've got the echo of my fear
40:05From side to side
40:07to side to side
40:11I've got the echo of my fear
40:18Let's side, to side, to side, to side
40:21To side, to side, to side, to side
40:24To what you want, to what you want
40:27Here comes the clash
40:31One, two, two, two, three
40:34I'm moving on the picture
40:37Wait me for the intersection
40:40I wanna take it back
40:42Nobody here is truly free
40:46This is an emancipation
40:49This is an emancipation
40:50From what I've got in the future
40:56I've got the echo of my fear
41:02From side to side, to side, to side, to side, to side
41:09I've got the echo of my fear
41:15To side, to side, to side, to side, to side
41:18To work, to work, to work, to work, to hide
41:22I've been caught in the echo
41:29Sometimes I've just gotta echo
41:54Some things you can't define
41:57Some things you can't define
42:00Sometimes you can't decide
42:04Do I? Do I?
42:08Some things you can't define
42:11Some things you can't define
42:14Sometimes you can't decide
42:17Do I? Do I?
42:21Sometimes you can't decide
42:30Do I? Do I?
43:12Some things you need to find
43:14Some things you need to find
43:18Sometimes you send your signs
43:21Do I? Do I?
43:24Some things you send your lies
43:27Some things you need to find
43:30Sometimes you send your signs
43:33Do I? Do I?
43:46Thank you, Dave.
43:48Thanks, man.
