00:01Sarah Pender was doing 110 years for a pair of Indianapolis murders in October of 2000
00:08before escaping from a maximum security prison.
00:11Investigators say Pender had help and is being passed around from friend to friend.
00:16The Department of Corrections, Indiana State Police, and the U.S. Marshals Task Force
00:21have worked nonstop in trying to apprehend Pender.
00:24Also tonight, a convicted killer is on the loose and a prison guard is now under arrest.
00:29Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
00:31Sarah Pender was serving a 110 year sentence at Rockville.
00:35Prison officials say that Spittler drove a prison van inside the gates and then hit...
00:41My heart dropped. I did not know what to do.
00:44I was absolutely scared.
00:50And I was afraid to look out the little peephole because I thought I'm gonna get shot in the face.
00:58And I thought, this is it.
01:09And when I opened up the door, it was my friend Thea.
01:16Thea and I spent time in prison together.
01:20And Peggy had told Thea where to find me.
01:24And so Thea showed up and she said,
01:29Bitch, what are you doing?
01:32I said, well, I did it.
01:34She said, yeah, she did.
01:36Oh my God, yeah, she did.
01:37She said, we gotta get the fuck out of here.
01:39So, I said, well, let's go.
01:50Thea and I drive to her house.
01:57That night, Thea fixed me pork chops, potatoes, green beans.
02:05It was delicious.
02:07It was the best thing I'd had in eight years.
02:11I remember just poking at my food with this real fork and feeling, you know, the metal on my teeth
02:18and thinking, oh my gosh, this is real.
02:21Sarah Pender is still on the run.
02:23These were the most normal things, like I was at home.
02:27And there was serving time for a double murder in Marion County back in 2000.
02:32I remember I was sitting in a lazy boy chair and feeling the cushion and just knowing that the harshness
02:41of prison was behind me.
02:51In a fugitive investigation such as Pender, you can't sit.
02:56Every lead I went and checked out, my visit to her friend Peggy, maybe didn't bear fruit.
03:04But I left her my business card and she said she would call me if she heard from Sarah.
03:10I said, if I find out that you're helping her, it's going to be a bad situation for you.
03:17That's how I rolled.
03:19Show her presence and then get them to work with you.
03:23Like setting a bird trap.
03:24I was setting areas out there for me that would hopefully spring and would generate a capture.
03:34I was chasing down these lines and meeting these offenders.
03:38But I'm also profiling her.
03:43She got someone to give her a phone and help her on the run.
03:48She's good at getting people to do things that are outside the normal human behavior.
03:53Does she get people to do things up until including putting two bodies in her trash dumpster?
04:01Pender was convicted in 2002 for the murder of her two roommates.
04:05Police say she helped her co-defendant dispose of the bodies in a south side dumpster.
04:11I thought, would Rick Hall play ball with me?
04:14Richard Hall was the co-defendant.
04:16That was her boyfriend at the time these murders happened.
04:19He was in Pendleton prison doing his own hundred plus years for the murders.
04:24Unit 1 of the industrial crash.
04:27Unit 1 of the industrial crash.
04:27Unit 1 of the industrial crash.
04:29Checkpoint 6.
04:30Copy.
04:31I thought Richard would know her better than anybody else.
04:35I also thought he may know where she would probably go.
04:41So I introduced myself.
04:43When I told him I was with the U.S. Marshals and I was looking for Sarah, he got a
04:46smile on his face.
04:47He goes, oh yeah?
04:50I had mixed emotions about her escape.
04:53I was happy, poor, good, go enjoy it while you can.
04:58You know, but I was really hurting and frustrated because I looked at my life as being over.
05:09I mean, I'm at a maximum prison because of Sarah.
05:16And they tell me that I will probably end up dying in this place.
05:26Ryan asked me to help, but it was just like, how can I help when I don't know anything?
05:33I don't know where she is.
05:37I mean, Rick knows her so well.
05:40So I said, where could she go?
05:42Do you have any theories about where she may run to?
05:46He thought about it.
05:48Rick told me the name Thea and that she did time with her.
05:53And that would be someone she would turn to on the run.
06:02It was a hell of a lead.
06:14At this point, my money's cut off. I don't know how I'm going to support myself.
06:19And Thea gives me a suggestion.
06:25Thea was a stripper and she had been spending time with one of the clients outside the strip club.
06:32And she knew that he wanted to have a threesome.
06:35She suggested that we have sex with him and that he would probably give us money.
06:43At the time, I was willing to give up my body.
06:46Absolutely.
06:47My body, my attention, my affection for freedom.
06:56That night, Thea arranged for us to meet at this motel room and introduced me to Tom.
07:04He was a businessman.
07:07He was clearly in his late 50s.
07:10But he was well built.
07:12He was dressed nice, smelled wonderful.
07:15So I didn't have any worries about him being this dirty old man.
07:22Thea told him that my name was Brandy.
07:26And that I had just been released from prison.
07:29And that I needed to make some money.
07:34I retired about five years ago.
07:36I have a freight brokering business.
07:38I don't have anything to do.
07:40And my wife travels a lot.
07:42I'm playing golf.
07:44After a while, my golf game got down in the 70s.
07:47What else can you do?
07:48I was pretty damn good.
07:50So I started actually living in the strip joints.
07:55Bottom line was sex is my drug.
07:58It took me over.
08:01So I was sitting there going, hey, let's get a threesome.
08:04I want a threesome.
08:13I mean, she comes up and gives you a nice hug and sweet as this.
08:17And, you know, and then it's like, okay.
08:21And so we had this rendezvous.
08:39After the threesome, Tom asked me what I was going to do for the rest of the evening.
08:44And I told him that I didn't know. I didn't really have anywhere to go.
08:47And so he said that I could stay in the room because it was already paid for.
08:51And so I was kind of asking, you know, so what are you going to do?
08:53You know, she goes, well, I think I'm going to go on the strip or circuit, find your job or
08:59something like that.
09:07I feel like I'm on the scent.
09:10Thea was working in the strip club industry and Rick had told me that if she really needed to get
09:18means or help, she would go to Thea or go to there and start hustling.
09:23I didn't know specifically where Thea was working, but there was various strip clubs here in Indianapolis.
09:30And I went out there and spent some time in these places to see if Sarah was there.
09:37At this point, you don't want to configure law enforcement at all.
09:40So you go in there like a baller, the shot caller, you know, and what I mean by that is
09:44you better have your money with you.
09:46The more money you spread, the more they're going to see you're just a normal guy.
09:52One of the distinguishing marks on Sarah was that she had a tattoo of a bullseye on her butt cheek.
09:58And I went out there looking for tattoos, looking for anybody that looked like Sarah.
10:02I stayed out until I couldn't stay up anymore.
10:06I saw a lot of ass, but I didn't see bullseyes.
10:16I was frustrated, but I didn't feel defeated by any means, because I will find out who's helping her.
10:29After the first day I was with her, it was like eating a Lay's potato chip.
10:34You can't just have one. I was hooked.
10:38The next morning, Tom came again, brought me McDonald's for breakfast.
10:44And he offered to pay for another night at the motel room.
10:48So I had somewhere to go and that he would keep me company.
10:55So I said yes.
11:00Tom and I were laying in bed and he turned on the TV and was flipping through the channels.
11:10Investigators say Sarah Pender is on the loose and dangerous.
11:14A Marion County jury convicted her in the year 2000 in a double murder.
11:19Pender escaped from the Rockville Correctional Facility, allegedly with the help of a correctional officer.
11:27When I saw that on the news, that's when I started going, holy shit.
11:33This is so far outside my realm of life.
11:36I feel like a damn goldfish swimming with sharks.
11:39I can't even comprehend this.
11:41I don't know what to do.
11:43I honestly don't know what to do.
11:45I was like, damn.
11:57Pender was convicted in 2002 for the murder of her two roommates.
12:01I didn't want to tell Tom the truth.
12:04But I didn't know what to say.
12:06And I'm a terrible liar.
12:08So I told him the story.
12:19The evening that Drew and Trish were murdered, Rick and I were out with my dad and stepmom.
12:29When Rick and I came home, Drew and Rick immediately started arguing about money that Rick's sister owed to Drew
12:38for drugs.
12:41Rick's talking about, you know, fuck this motherfucker.
12:44And, you know, he said, you probably want to leave.
12:48And I told him, I have nowhere to go. Where am I supposed to go?
12:55And so I walked around the neighborhood.
13:00When I came home, everything seemed really quiet, like extra quiet.
13:12And the house was dark.
13:17And it felt wrong.
13:27I heard a noise.
13:30I didn't understand what the noise was.
13:34And I called out for Rick.
13:37And there was no response.
13:41And I looked.
13:43I didn't see Drew or Trish or Rick.
13:49There was blood on the floor.
13:59And when I got to the living room, I saw Rick.
14:08Rick was bent over.
14:11He was putting Trish's body into a blanket.
14:21I do remember being very afraid.
14:27And thinking that what do I do now?
14:31What do I do?
14:32What do I do?
14:33Because I didn't know.
14:35I said, Ricky.
14:40And when he stood up, he turned around.
14:43And he just looked at me.
14:52For a moment, we just stared at each other.
14:55And I clearly thought to myself,
14:57I'm about to die.
15:02And so I just froze.
15:04I just froze there.
15:06And I waited.
15:12And then I put my hands up and I just said,
15:14what do you want me to do?
15:19Rick told me to get another blanket.
15:21And so I did.
15:31I remember Rick dragging Trish's body across the floor to take her out.
15:38And when he put her body in the back of the truck,
15:47I saw that Drew was already in there.
15:57But I didn't know what to do.
16:02Except stand there.
16:08This felt so helpless.
16:16Rick told me to get into the truck.
16:19And I did.
16:26I remember very clearly thinking this is not real.
16:30And making up that everything was fine.
16:35Rick drove only a handful of blocks away to a dumpster behind a building.
16:50I only saw when I looked in the rear view mirror.
16:58And I didn't want to see anything else.
17:00And so I just looked forward.
17:03And I pretended not to see.
17:06And I pretended not to see.
17:31That's not what happened.
17:33That's not what happened whatsoever.
17:38Drew was my friend.
17:41He was my brother.
17:44As far as the night that this all took place.
17:49I'm still in the middle of some of my appeals.
17:52So I can't get into the full details.
17:56Of everything that took place.
17:59But I did not.
18:01I did not.
18:03I did not murder Drew and Chris.
18:06And I was the judge.
18:07I was the judge.
18:14When I was talking to Rick.
18:15He openly said.
18:18He walked in.
18:19And returned home.
18:21and Sarah was rocking back and forth,
18:23holding a shotgun while two dead bodies were there.
18:25That's what he claims.
18:31Who are you going to believe?
18:34Me with my background,
18:36knowing that here it is, I'm a drug dude,
18:39in the business,
18:416'3 1⁄2", 6'4", 325 pounds,
18:45ball head, goatee, looking like this.
18:47Or some girl that's kind of innocent looking,
18:50just working her way through being a young adult.
18:54Who are you going to believe?
18:59Those females won't lie.
19:00They're not going to be deceiving.
19:17Sarah, she was saying,
19:18Tom, this is all bullshit.
19:20I wasn't at that murder.
19:22I wasn't even there at the house.
19:25I said, what do you mean?
19:27She goes, Rick had a temper.
19:30Rick killed them.
19:32Did she ever mention that that day
19:34that they were killed,
19:35she went and bought a shotgun?
19:52Rick just asked me to buy a gun,
19:54and I said yes.
19:57I didn't question why he would want it.
20:04There wasn't a lot of discussion about it.
20:09Rick couldn't buy a gun because he had a previous felony.
20:13So, at 7.30 in the morning,
20:16he drove us to Walmart,
20:17and we walked in.
20:19He picked out the gun and ammunition that he wanted.
20:23And I bought it,
20:24paid with a check and my ID,
20:28thinking that this was
20:30what I was supposed to be doing.
20:49Did I know if Drew
20:51or Trish was going to get killed
20:53with that shotgun?
20:57No.
20:59Sarah was playing her game,
21:01was pointing everything at me
21:03at the very beginning.
21:05I just don't know
21:07what really happened.
21:09What I can say is that
21:12Sarah wanted
21:13that shotgun.
21:15It was Sarah's idea
21:17to go for the protection.
21:19I mean,
21:20I was in the drug business.
21:22If I wanted a gun,
21:23I could have one.
21:24I mean,
21:25getting a gun was not a problem.
21:27Would not have been a problem.
21:30Oh.
21:39The victims,
21:40a white man and a woman,
21:42were discovered last night
21:43in a dumpster
21:44behind the Teamsters Hall
21:45in the 800 block of South Meridian.
21:47The two had been shot to death.
21:52What's not an everyday occurrence
21:53to have bodies in a dumpster
21:57in Indianapolis,
21:58let alone two bodies in a dumpster.
22:04Once we identified our victims,
22:08Andrew Cataldi and Trisha Nordman,
22:12we were able to connect the location
22:15of where they had lived,
22:16and we knew that the home
22:20was being rented
22:21by Rick Hall
22:23and Sarah Pender.
22:26Rick clearly was a suspect.
22:29We knew Rick
22:30had been dealing drugs.
22:32Police came to believe
22:33that this man,
22:3422-year-old Richard Hall,
22:36who lived with Cataldi and Nordman,
22:38was the likely murderer.
22:39He was placed under arrest
22:42and charged with
22:43Andrew and Trisha's murders.
22:47We just didn't know
22:48if Sarah was involved.
23:03Okay.
23:05Can you please state and spell
23:08your first and last name?
23:10Sarah Pender,
23:12S-A-R-A-H-P-E-N-D-E-R.
23:16Okay.
23:17And can you please tell me your age?
23:19I'm 21 years of age.
23:23At any time,
23:24did it occur to you
23:25to tell the cops
23:27or anybody
23:28in law enforcement
23:29what happened?
23:31Yes, I wouldn't be called
23:32the cops when it happened.
23:34I was scared.
23:36I was torn between
23:38protecting myself
23:39and telling the truth
23:42because I'm not a liar.
23:43I am such the most
23:45honest person
23:46and kind-hearted,
23:47gentle person
23:47that anybody
23:48will tell you.
23:52She was flipping her hair
23:53and fixing her blouse
23:56and fixing her shirt.
23:57I thought she was
23:59the type of woman
24:01that maybe thought
24:02she could talk
24:04her way out of this.
24:06But we knew that
24:07Sarah had purchased
24:09a weapon.
24:09She helped conceal
24:11the evidence.
24:12I felt like she was
24:14more involved
24:14than she let on.
24:19She was saying,
24:20Tom,
24:21I was 20 years old.
24:22I was stupid.
24:23I was the stupidest
24:23thing in the world.
24:25But see,
24:26and you probably
24:27found this out,
24:28she is extreme
24:29intelligent.
24:30I mean,
24:31I don't know
24:31if she tests out
24:32as a genius
24:32or whatever.
24:33Her IQ's got
24:35to be up there.
24:36Yeah, well,
24:37she made
24:37physics at Purdue
24:39and that doesn't
24:40just take anybody.
24:43Yeah, I mean,
24:44she's a smart cookie.
24:50I stand firm
24:51in my convictions
24:52that she is a very,
24:54very dangerous person.
24:57She's capable
24:58of doing about anything.
25:01After Sarah
25:02escaped from prison
25:03in 2008,
25:05my daughter said,
25:08Dad,
25:08aren't you a little
25:09worried about
25:10what she might do?
25:13You're the one
25:14that convicted her.
25:16Don't you think
25:17we ought to be
25:18concerned about
25:19her coming here?
25:21I said that
25:22I think Sarah
25:23is a dark,
25:25evil demon within.
25:28I think it's
25:29a good thing
25:30for Indianapolis
25:31and everybody else
25:33that she's found
25:35as soon as possible
25:36because I don't know
25:37what she's capable
25:38of doing.
25:42When I was a youngster,
25:43I was an actor.
25:47Then I realized
25:48a little later on
25:49you need to be
25:50gainfully employed.
25:52So I fooled around
25:54into practice of law
25:55and eventually
25:57ended up working
25:57as a deputy prosecutor
25:59in Marion County
26:00Prosecutor's Office.
26:02Sarah Pender
26:03had been charged
26:04with two murders.
26:05I was getting
26:06to prosecute.
26:07I loved that.
26:09You know,
26:10I felt pretty good
26:11about the evidence
26:12in the case.
26:23I tried to feel
26:24optimistic
26:25about the trial
26:26the best I could
26:28because I had no idea
26:30what the evidence was.
26:32and I just didn't
26:34know what to expect.
26:37Before the trial
26:40I thought that
26:41they just made a mistake
26:42and everything would be
26:43okay,
26:44that it would be fixed.
26:46I remember sitting there
26:48thinking
26:50I couldn't wait
26:51to get home
26:53lay in my bed
26:55eat lasagna
26:57and
27:00figure out
27:01how I was going
27:01to move forward
27:02with my life.
27:10When the trial started
27:13Sarah was trying
27:14to convince the jury
27:16that although Rick
27:17did all these horrible
27:18things
27:18and committed
27:19these murders
27:20and that she was
27:21with them
27:22that she didn't
27:23actually participate.
27:26She said she was
27:28scared.
27:29She thought Rick
27:30home might shoot her
27:31if she didn't
27:33help him.
27:35But I argued
27:36to the jury
27:37she had that
27:38opportunity to leave
27:39the day after
27:40the shootings
27:41to go to law enforcement.
27:44Just why in the hell
27:45didn't he get out
27:46of there?
27:47Leave.
27:47Go.
27:50But she didn't.
27:57I've covered
27:59lots of murder cases.
28:00I'm a journalist.
28:01I look for evidence.
28:03I look for facts.
28:04And in Sarah's case
28:05the facts Larry put forward
28:07were really compelling.
28:09Larry introduced
28:10a witness
28:11named Floyd Pennington.
28:15Floyd had been
28:16locked up in jail
28:18on a robbery charge.
28:20She had some sort
28:21of steamy
28:22pen-pail relationship
28:24with him
28:24while they were
28:26both locked up
28:26in jail.
28:28When Floyd
28:29entered the courtroom
28:30from the opposite side
28:32I wanted to yell out
28:34like why are you
28:34doing this?
28:37Floyd was charming
28:39and he used
28:39proper spelling
28:40and grammar
28:42and that's unusual
28:43for a lot of people
28:44in jail.
28:46After seven months
28:48of writing
28:48Floyd and I
28:50decided to
28:51organize
28:51a trip
28:52to the hospital.
28:58they feigned
28:59some sort
28:59of illnesses
29:00so they could
29:00talk in person.
29:07He told her
29:09that he wanted
29:09to have a
29:12better
29:13stronger relationship
29:14and she did too
29:16but he needed
29:17her to confide
29:18in him
29:19tell him
29:20the truth
29:20about the
29:21murders
29:22of Andrew
29:23Cataldi
29:23and Trish Norman.
29:27So Floyd
29:28said that
29:29Sarah had told him
29:30that she
29:31wanted to get rid
29:32of the roommates
29:33to
29:34you know
29:35for money
29:36or drug dealing
29:37or whatever it is
29:38they were into
29:38at the time.
29:41She bought
29:42the shotgun
29:43she got Rick
29:44angry enough
29:46and
29:47convinced him
29:48to commit
29:48these murders.
29:51I wanted
29:52to scream
29:53out like
29:53this is not
29:54happening
29:55he is lying
29:56how could
29:56anyone believe
29:58this man
29:59how could
30:00anybody believe
30:00him.
30:03And I said
30:04she had a
30:04Charles Manson
30:05like ability
30:06to convince
30:06people to do
30:07bad things.
30:10during the trial
30:12Larry came out
30:14and told the jury
30:14how there's
30:15also this
30:16one letter
30:21it painted
30:22a picture
30:23of Sarah
30:23and not
30:25as a
30:26you know
30:27innocent victim.
30:30It was something
30:31that was
30:32certainly shocking.
30:33My dearest
30:34Richard
30:36I just
30:36snapped
30:37I didn't
30:38mean to
30:38kill them
30:39it must
30:39have been
30:40the acid.
30:42There was
30:43nothing I could
30:44do to
30:45defend myself
30:46and all I could
30:47think about
30:47was I didn't
30:48write this
30:48I didn't
30:48write this
30:49I didn't
30:49do this.
30:50I'll never
30:51forget you
30:52I love you
30:53and I miss
30:53you so much.
30:55Love all
30:56of us.
31:00Larry in his
31:01closing arguments
31:02sort of gave
31:03two possibilities
31:05of ways
31:06of proving
31:06Sarah's guilt.
31:07In one
31:08it was that
31:09like that
31:10letter said
31:12Sarah was
31:13the one who
31:14had actually
31:14pulled the
31:15trigger
31:15and shot
31:16the victims
31:17and the other
31:19scenario Larry
31:20put forward
31:20was Floyd
31:22Pennington's
31:22statement
31:22that Sarah
31:24had manipulated
31:26Rick into
31:27doing these
31:28crimes.
31:28It doesn't
31:29matter
31:29if the jury
31:31believes one
31:31or the other
31:33she's still
31:34guilty of
31:34murder.
31:37They said
31:38you have a
31:39responsibility
31:40to convict
31:41her
31:42and they
31:42did.
31:43The jury
31:44came back
31:44in
31:45and the
31:46judge
31:46wrote
31:47that she
31:47was guilty
31:48of both
31:48murders.
31:55Sarah
31:56Pender
31:57was
31:57sentenced
31:57to
31:59110
31:59years.
32:06all I
32:07remember
32:07is crying.
32:13Oh,
32:14I cried,
32:16you know,
32:17because
32:17what do you
32:18do?
32:19I felt like
32:21my heart
32:21was ripped
32:21out.
32:26I was
32:27lost
32:29because there
32:29was no
32:30way that I
32:30could sit
32:31in prison
32:31for 110
32:32years
32:33for something
32:34I didn't
32:34do.
32:39Investigators
32:40say Sarah
32:41Pender is
32:41on the
32:42loose
32:42and dangerous.
32:43A Marion
32:44County jury
32:45convicted her
32:45in the year
32:462000 in a
32:47double murder.
32:49Tom stayed
32:50with me
32:50for a few
32:51days.
32:52Our
32:53relationship
32:54deepened
32:55and I
32:56just trusted
32:56that Tom
32:57was not
32:57going to
32:58go home
32:58and call
32:59the police.
33:01He was
33:02all these
33:02things that
33:03from the
33:03outside
33:04looking in
33:04was a
33:05very normal
33:06upstanding
33:06citizen.
33:07But in
33:08his private
33:08life,
33:09Tom was
33:09a sex
33:10addict
33:10and he
33:11saw an
33:11opportunity
33:12for me
33:12to be
33:12a sex
33:13pet.
33:17clear as
33:17day,
33:18I remember
33:18he asked
33:19me if
33:21the oddest
33:22thing he
33:23asked me,
33:24do you
33:24love me?
33:27No.
33:28He said,
33:28do you
33:28think you
33:29could love
33:29me?
33:32Yeah,
33:33I think I
33:33could love
33:33you.
33:35He said,
33:36okay.
33:38He said,
33:39do you
33:39want me to
33:39take care
33:39of you?
33:41Yeah.
33:42And so I
33:42began to
33:43look at
33:43the
33:43relationship
33:44as,
33:44I need
33:45to play
33:45a role.
33:48She was
33:49tremendously
33:49compassionate
33:50and seemed
33:51like she
33:51cared and
33:51all that.
33:52And I'm
33:53starting to
33:53think,
33:54I'm,
33:55I hate
33:56to say
33:56I'm starting
33:56to have
33:56feelings.
33:58You know,
33:59he's my
33:59sugar daddy
34:00and I
34:01never got
34:01greedy.
34:04I never
34:04wanted him
34:05to think
34:05that I
34:06was using
34:07him.
34:09I always
34:09wanted him
34:10to know
34:10that he
34:10was using
34:11me.
34:13I don't
34:14know if
34:14when in
34:15prison she
34:17learned
34:17psychology,
34:19I don't
34:19know,
34:19because she
34:20trances
34:20you.
34:23Tom
34:24wanted to
34:25go to
34:25a casino.
34:26He
34:27enjoyed
34:27gambling
34:28and wanted
34:30to show
34:30me off
34:31as something
34:32like a
34:32prize.
34:34I was
34:35worried that
34:36someone would
34:36recognize me,
34:37but I had
34:38cut my hair,
34:39dyed it.
34:39I was
34:40made up
34:41in this
34:42little black
34:43dress and
34:43a necklace.
34:46It was a
34:46very reckless
34:47thing to go
34:48to the
34:48casino,
34:49but it
34:49made him
34:50happy.
34:50It made
34:50him want
34:51to keep
34:51me.
34:54One of the
34:55things that
34:55made me
34:56valuable to
34:56Tom is
34:57that I
34:57would do
34:58whatever he
34:58wanted me
34:59to do.
35:00And so
35:00when Tom
35:01wanted to
35:02go out,
35:02I said
35:03yes,
35:03because I
35:04would have
35:04said yes
35:05if he
35:05asked me
35:05to turn
35:06the sky
35:07purple.
35:11But every
35:13moment was
35:13tainted with
35:16knowing that
35:18someone that
35:19had seen me
35:19on the news
35:20could spot
35:21me.
35:21Others have
35:22talked to
35:23police saying
35:23they think
35:24they've spotted
35:24Pender.
35:25I became
35:26more paranoid.
35:27Sarah Pender.
35:27Sarah Pender.
35:28Sarah Pender.
35:29Sarah Pender.
35:34I realized
35:35it was important
35:36for me to
35:36keep moving
35:37and get
35:38out of
35:38Indianapolis.
35:40So I asked
35:41Tom to
35:42help me.
35:52Tom fixed
35:53me up
35:53with a job
35:53down in
35:54Cincinnati
35:54working with
35:55a friend
35:56of his
35:56that was
35:57a general
35:57contractor.
35:59It was
36:00really hard
36:00to be away
36:01from my
36:02friends because
36:03they had
36:03become such
36:04a support
36:04system and
36:06so that
36:07sort of
36:10solitude
36:11was difficult.
36:17One day
36:18at home
36:19the FedEx
36:20guy came
36:21and I
36:21thought mom
36:22might have
36:22ordered
36:22something.
36:23She said
36:23she didn't
36:24order anything
36:25and then I
36:26got to looking
36:27at it and
36:27it had my
36:28name on
36:28it.
36:31Then I
36:32opened it
36:32up and I
36:33seen it was
36:33a little
36:33track phone
36:35one that
36:35can't be
36:36traced and
36:37then I
36:38looked in
36:38there again
36:39and seen
36:39there was
36:39a little
36:39note in
36:40there from
36:40Sarah.
36:46It was
36:46roadblock
36:47after roadblock
36:48after roadblock
36:49but you
36:50can't give
36:51up.
36:53I've got
36:53certain things
36:54in place
36:54and then
36:55boom
36:58I get
36:58notified by
36:59Peggy.
37:01She was
37:02nervous and
37:02she goes
37:02Sarah
37:03mail me a
37:03phone and
37:03she said
37:04call me
37:04this Thursday
37:05what do I
37:05do?
37:06I was like
37:06don't do
37:06anything I'll
37:07be there
37:07Thursday.
37:09So when
37:09Peggy reported
37:10that to me
37:11that took me
37:11from cloud
37:12one to
37:12cloud nine
37:13I was
37:13excited.
37:15It gives
37:16you that
37:16other shot
37:17of adrenaline
37:17to keep
37:17on going
37:18because I'm
37:18getting closer.
37:34When Peggy
37:34got her
37:35phone mailed
37:35to her
37:36I called
37:36down our
37:37tactical
37:37operations
37:38truck from
37:38Detroit.
37:40He came
37:41down for
37:41this because
37:42once the
37:43phone came
37:43up live
37:44we needed
37:45to track
37:45where she
37:46was bedded
37:46down at.
37:49When we
37:49got to
37:50Peggy
37:50you could
37:51see Peggy
37:53was nervous
37:53and God
37:54love her
37:55here we
37:55are
37:56federal
37:57agents
37:57and this
37:58is a big
37:59deal.
38:01We're all
38:02waiting for
38:02this thing
38:02to start
38:02ringing
38:03and all
38:03I told
38:04Peggy
38:04was when
38:05she calls
38:06be normal.
38:11when the
38:12phone rang
38:12it scared
38:13me
38:13I jumped
38:14I didn't
38:14know what
38:15to expect.
38:19Eventually
38:20Peggy
38:21answered
38:21and I
38:24immediately
38:25felt relief
38:26from this
38:28tension
38:28that I
38:29had.
38:31I mean
38:32she was
38:32talking
38:33really
38:33kind of
38:33like
38:34quiet
38:35you know
38:35so I
38:36don't
38:36know
38:36where
38:37she
38:37was
38:37at.
38:38Peggy
38:39was crying
38:39and she's
38:40like
38:41they know
38:42that I
38:42helped
38:42you
38:42I don't
38:43want to
38:43go back
38:43to prison
38:44please
38:44just turn
38:44yourself
38:45in.
38:45It was
38:46so hard
38:46to hear
38:47her be
38:48scared.
38:51my colleague
38:52was out
38:52in the
38:52truck
38:53and he
38:54was trying
38:54to locate
38:55which
38:55tower
38:55and which
38:56antenna
38:57where she
38:57was at.
38:59I'm trying
39:00to keep
39:00Peggy
39:01on the
39:01phone
39:01because
39:02the longer
39:02I had
39:02the conversation
39:03going
39:03the better
39:04it was
39:04for us
39:05to get
39:05where she
39:05was at.
39:11I begged
39:12her to
39:12turn herself
39:12in because
39:13they had
39:13orders
39:14to shoot
39:14to kill.
39:19I told
39:20her I
39:20can't
39:20turn
39:20myself
39:21in.
39:21This
39:22is
39:22what I
39:23chose
39:23to do
39:24and if
39:24I go
39:24back
39:25I'm
39:25just
39:25going
39:25to
39:26kill
39:26myself.
39:26And I
39:27told
39:27her
39:27if
39:28they
39:28find
39:28me
39:29and
39:29they
39:29shoot
39:29me
39:30they're
39:30only
39:30going
39:30to
39:30do
39:31me
39:31a
39:31favor.
39:35Those
39:35are
39:35words
39:36I'm
39:36sure
39:36Peggy
39:36didn't
39:37want
39:37to
39:37hear
39:37and
39:37it
39:38was
39:38the
39:38first
39:38indicator
39:39that
39:39Sarah
39:40didn't
39:41want
39:41go
39:41back
39:41alive.
39:43That
39:44goes
39:44beyond
39:44me
39:45speculating.
39:45I heard
39:46it
39:46from
39:46the
39:46horse's
39:47mouth
39:48that
39:48she's
39:49accepted
39:50violence
39:50as
39:50opposed
39:50to
39:51peaceful
39:51surrender.
39:54I
39:54remember
39:55apologizing
39:56to her
39:56and
39:56Peggy
39:56I'm
39:57so
39:57sorry
39:57I'm
39:58so
39:58sorry
40:00and
40:00then
40:01she
40:01hung
40:01up
40:03and
40:03I
40:03believe
40:03that
40:04was
40:04the
40:04last
40:04time
40:05I
40:05talked
40:05to
40:05her.
40:07After
40:07the
40:07phone
40:07call
40:08it
40:08literally
40:08took
40:08a
40:08beeline
40:09out
40:09to
40:09the
40:09truck.
40:10The
40:10technical
40:11guy
40:12finds
40:12out
40:12it's
40:12on
40:13a
40:13tower
