Seth and Sean talk about reasons they think CJ Stroud seems more focused this offseason than he has before and react to some nonsense from Colin Cowherd about the Texans.

00:03Texans are going to be getting OTAs under here pretty soon, end of the month, I believe.
00:09So they were asked yesterday at the golf tournament, C.J. was a big topic.
00:14They asked D'Amico about him.
00:15They asked Cal McNair about C.J. Stroud, and here's what the owner of the Texans had to say.
00:20Well, as you know, we'll leave that up with Nick, and those communications are behind the scenes.
00:27But, yeah, we're fully committed to C.J.
00:30I think you saw we extended it.
00:31We exercised his fifth-year option, and so we'll see how it all works out.
00:36Okay, so Cal's deferring to Nick and D'Amico, and that's what you want a good owner to do,
00:40let their personnel people go run things.
00:42Obviously the question was centered around his contractual situation.
00:47Yeah, and I think that every time that Nick or D'Amico or now Cal has talked about it,
00:53they'll talk about very much in the present tense about how they're committed to him,
00:58I think, without saying anything about the future, which is partly understandable
01:02just because you're not going to talk about contract negotiations or anything.
01:07But I feel like there's no, at the very least right now,
01:12there's zero suspicion that the Texans are going to try to trade C.J. Stroud
01:16or certainly that they're going to try to draft Ty Simpson or something like that.
01:21So I think that was in the initial off-season speculative phase
01:27where people are just throwing out anything and everything.
01:29I think it's clear that they're not in that mode.
01:32But that's different than saying, hey, we hope C.J.'s the quarterback here for the next 15 years.
01:38So they never leak any information.
01:43You're not going to know about exactly whether or not they're going to work on a C.J. Stroud extension
01:47until you either see that there wasn't any work or that the contract shows up.
01:54D.J. Bianname's article the other day, he did say that as of yet,
01:57there haven't been any negotiations between Stroud's representation and the Texans.
02:01Yeah, yeah, and I think that's worth noting because the guy picked right after C.J.
02:09got a contract done, Will Anderson.
02:12So this isn't, if C.J. were the only one in a vacuum right now from that draft class
02:19that was in a conversation, that was worth having a discussion about to have a contract extension,
02:24if he were the only one, they would be like, all right, well, maybe this is just the M.O.
02:27and they're going to wait a little later for this.
02:29But they did a contract with Will Anderson two weeks ago that reportedly, according to the article,
02:36Jonathan Alexander had sort of an anatomy of the Will Anderson extension yesterday in the Chronicle.
02:42And in that article, he said that it was the Texans who reached out first to Will's people.
02:48Right.
02:49Oh, yeah.
02:50You know, you and I kind of talked about that a little bit, like, oh, who do you think makes
02:53the first call with the C.J. thing?
02:54Is it Mulligetta calling the Texans or is it the Texans calling C.J.'s representation?
03:00And in that article, Jonathan Alexander said the first contact came from the Texans to Nicole Lynn.
03:05You know, I'm glad you mentioned that the guy who was drafted directly after C.J. Stroud did get his
03:12contract extension.
03:13The guy drafted directly in front of C.J. Stroud has not gotten a contract extension.
03:18Bryce Young, yeah.
03:19Bryce Young.
03:19So at one point, the only news I've seen out of that was that Dan Morgan said that they have
03:26talked about a long-term contact internally.
03:30But I haven't seen any news reported.
03:33There doesn't seem to be, unless I've just missed it, a whole lot of debate or fervor over whether or
03:38not Bryce Young should be extended.
03:39No, that article was yesterday that I saw, the quoting Dan Morgan article, and I'm reading that article.
03:45I'm like, God, it sounds like we could be reading an article about C.J. Stroud.
03:50It's a very similar spot where the teams are optimistic about the futures of their quarterbacks, but very noncommittal about
03:58the long-term future right now.

04:06Sorry, but in terms of a long-term contract, that's something that we're talking about here internally, and we'll do

04:42And I believe Cal 1,000% that he's leaving it up to those two guys.
04:47Cal strikes me as the anti-Jerry Jones.
04:49I don't know that Cal wants anything to do with any of the personnel decisions.
04:52And I don't say that in a bad way.
04:55I think it's good that the owner lets capable people go do their jobs without meddling in it.
05:01Yeah, no, that's my preferred attitude in an owner.
05:05It's just always the double, the two sides to that blade is that if you've got somebody like Jack Easterby
05:11in the organization and you're just letting him and Bill O'Brien tinker with their toys, it can be disastrous.
05:16But if you have the right people, yeah, let them do their work.
05:20Don't gunk it up with, you know, your heavy-handed influence.
05:23And I think there's one thing Cal understands that some owners don't, which is you've got to be really careful
05:30when you're an owner and you're trying not to meddle.
05:33But every kind of offhand comment you might make to a coach or a GM, it's ten times heavier than
05:41you think it is.
05:42You know, like you're a little like, oh, I might think about doing this.
05:47A GM hears that and it's like, okay, I've got to, boy, I better commission a project.
05:50I better consider this, at least.
05:53And I think Cal understands that because he's been around for a long time.
05:57Yep.
05:58Okay, so CJ's offseason here.
06:00We'll get to Cowherd in just a second.
06:01I got thinking about this yesterday, Seth.
06:03Somehow I got on the topic of the conversation about the Pro Bowl, and I remember like, oh, yeah, CJ
06:09had a chance to go to the Pro Bowl this year but said no.
06:14And I'm like, hey, you know what, like that was probably like the first of the things that make me
06:19feel good about how he's handled his offseason so far.
06:23I think he's, I think the fact that we've seen very little of him also is a function of that.
06:27Like, we haven't seen or heard a lot from CJ, but saying no to the Pro Bowl, he's done zero
06:33interviews that I've seen.
06:35I haven't seen a single podcast that I can think of, and if anybody can think of one, text in
06:41to the Base Power text line.
06:43But he's done zero interviews, which I think is good.
06:46He's definitely remade his body in some way, kind of like Matthew Stafford style.
06:51Like, remember when Stafford used to have a little bit of chunk to him, and then he came back, he
06:54rededicated himself, and all of a sudden his face thinned out, and his body kind of thinned out.
07:00I think, yeah, isn't Matt Stafford, though, a guy that's always just had a fat face and not that?
07:03And he stopped having one.
07:05Yeah.
07:06Oh, is his face not as fat?
07:07It's not as fat as it used to be.
07:09Yeah, but there was a point in Stafford's career much later than CJ where he kind of remade, you know,
07:16he remade his body type.
07:17Well, yeah, I mean, like, CJ last year remade his body, and it got to the point where he worked
07:23out too hard in the weight room and couldn't participate in OTAs.
07:25Right, and it feels like he's done the opposite.
07:27It looks like he's a little bit more slender, yeah.
07:29I guess, yeah, the difference would be there.
07:31I don't think, like, it's not like he had gotten fat or something, you know.
07:35It wasn't like he all of a sudden this year discovered working out.

07:38It's that he might have decided that maybe being a little bit more slender is better for him.
07:43Yeah, he changed it up.
07:43Finding his ideal body weight, which is, it's hard.
07:46Sometimes it takes a few years to figure out what your ideal body weight is.
07:49I remember Brett Favre lost a bunch of weight one year, and he got into, like, October, and thought, man,

07:57I got to eat some more chicken wings.
08:00Yeah, and that'll be, you know, then that'll be something maybe, you know, CJ has to adapt to or adjust
08:05or whatever.
08:06But at the very least, it's a clear effort to be doing something that he feels is going to positively
08:11impact his season this year.

08:13I think there's no doubt about that.
08:14I'm texting the new teammates on both sides of the ball, by the way.
08:18I think Cade McDonald even said he got a CJ Stroud text, which would make sense.
08:22They're both Ohio State guys.
08:23But still, texting his new teammates, showing up for the voluntary stuff, which he's done before.
08:28But this would have been the first opportunity for him to use some leverage if the contract is a big
08:36deal to him, I'm sure.
08:37It would have been notable in the way that, yeah, when guys like Kyler Murray or Lamar Jackson or just
08:43pick your quarterback who has decided to unfollow his team on social media in a situation like this or not
08:48go to OTAs or whatever.
08:49Not a peep.
08:50That's going to be a story.

08:56And to your point, as you mentioned, there haven't really been any substantial talks on the contract yet, according to

09:10marks for CJ.
09:11Now he's got to play well.
09:12This was another one that popped up on my, on my Twitter timeline last night, Seth.
09:17You're going to faintly hear CJ in the background on this, but I saw this video pop up and it's
09:22CJ clearly at some sort of party or festive atmosphere.
09:26And I'm like, oh no.
09:27And there's like three really, really attractive women walking up to him that are somewhat scantily clad at this party.
09:33And one of them is a streamer by the name of Lil Baby T.
09:37Oh, sure.

09:39Right.
09:39She walks up to him.
09:41I've got the audio here.
09:42Uh, don't scoff.
09:43This is going to be a, this is a significant thing in my CJ hypothesis.
09:47She's walking up to him with her phone.
09:50Someone is streaming her walking up to CJ, trying to stream him.
09:54And she's kind of explaining to CJ how streaming works with maybe an ulterior motive of just cozying up to

11:53In re-listening to that, she was talking about the Wi-Fi backpack that some of these streamers have with
11:58them where they just carry it.
11:59She might have been trying to get him to invest in her stream, you know?

12:03You know, like, hey, a lot of times these streamers, I'm just a simple streamer with an iPhone, but a
12:08lot of times, you know, the ones that have more money are able to carry the Wi-Fi backpack around.

15:49It's really interesting how some people read these articles and see and hear different
15:54things than what's actually said.
15:56So, uh, we're going to play some, we're going to play some Colin Coward.

16:01And Colin Coward cites a quote from an anonymous executive he saw in this piece.
16:06He never mentions DJ Bien-Aime, uh, or ESPN.com, but I'm almost positive that's where he saw
16:12this anonymous quote because you'll hear him say something about waiting on CJ Stroud,
16:17waiting to do a deal.
16:18So one of the anonymous quotes in DJ Bien-Aime's article is this, waiting, uh, basically waiting
16:25to give him a deal until next year.
16:28Waiting lets him bet on himself too, which is what you want from the guy.
16:31No need to come close to resetting the market prematurely.
16:35And, uh, and Colin thinks that this is the dumbest thing he's ever heard in his entire
16:39life.
16:39There's a story out on CJ Stroud and there's an anonymous quote saying, I'm not sure I'd
16:44pay him.
16:45I would keep waiting on CJ Stroud.

16:48You're crazy.
16:50The great thing about anonymous quotes, they let me see crazy people.
16:53I just don't know who they are, but AFC executives, just think about this.
16:57If he was on the market, just in division, the Colts would pay a ransom for him.

17:08I mean, look around the league right now.
17:10I was, I was writing down teams, Arizona, the Minnesota Vikings.

17:16If they were on the market, who would sign a big check?

18:05I, with CJ Stroud, I don't, I don't have to win a bidding war.
18:10So what on earth does it matter that other teams would pay a lot of money for him when
18:15I've got four years of control of CJ Stroud?

18:18Cowherd, it's almost like he doesn't understand the concept of team control in the NFL.
18:24Like this is why, this is, this is why, yeah, this is why rookie contracts exist.
18:29This is why there's a fifth year option.
18:30This is why all these things that have been collectively bargained by CJ Stroud's union
18:36exists to benefit the teams early on in players' careers.

18:40And it's really, it's what Cowherd does is he'll say a bunch of true things and then come
18:44to a conclusion that's not based on any of those true things, but he dupes people into
18:49believing it.
18:49So Sean and I need to do this public service of showing you how Colin Cowherd has made a
18:53career out of duping people with, with bogus rhetoric.
18:57I want to skip down to throughout, I'm going to skip back to two because three is sort
19:02of the follow-up to the one we just played, Ben.
19:04This is his closing argument about just incredulous as he's executive.
19:09And remember, he's talking about a guy that said you should wait a year before you give
19:14CJ Stroud the contract.
19:15That's right.
19:15When I see stories like that in anonymous quotes, I'm like, if you think you should move
19:19off CJ Stroud, I'm not sure how you're in the league.
19:23I really don't.
19:24You cannot let go of somebody that big, that strong, that accurate, who's been carrying
19:30his team.
19:31I mean, I know they have a great defense, but you know, that's what happens.
19:34You do get help somewhere along the way on your roster.

19:39Nobody, there's not a single, I went back and reread the article.

19:43And I'm assuming it's, it would be nice.

19:45It would be nice if he mentioned who wrote the article so that we know that we're reading

19:57that they're moving off of CJ Stroud.

21:04He said, Stroud can't catch a break.

21:07He's won a playoff game.
21:08That is no small thing.
21:10Justin Herbert's never won a playoff game.
21:12Trevor Lawrence has won in five years.
21:15Three playoff wins is more than Dak Prescott, the same number of, as Lamar Jackson.
21:21Three playoff wins with a defensive coach.
21:24And we have questions about ownership.
21:27They're not playing all those games at home.
21:30The problem with CJ Stroud is he can't get a break.
21:36His wide receiver core is always depleted.
21:39Nick Collins, Nico Collins, not available in the playoffs.
21:43Tank Dell, out all year.
21:44You're starting with your number three receiver.
21:46Oh, what about the running back?
21:48Well, they were banged up too.
21:49That's why they had to go get David Montgomery.
21:52I mean, Woody Marks, he's good when he's healthy.

22:28that doesn't also mean that, yes, you should definitely give him a big contract now
22:33because it hasn't been ideal, as opposed to, all right, let's see if we can get him
22:37under more ideal conditions and see how he plays this year, and then we'll have more information,
22:41we'll have more data, we'll have all of that.
22:43Bringing up the playoff wins annoyed the hell out of me, though.
