00:00Hey guys, Cool Blonde, we're back. I'm Aaron.
00:01I'm Calvin.
00:02Eric.
00:03And we're back with Kaguya-sama.
00:04Love is war.
00:06Or weenor.
00:08Does that work?
00:10Weenor?
00:10I'm trying to turn war into wiener, but it doesn't work.
00:13The wiener war.
00:14The great, the second wiener war.
00:15No, not the wiener war. It's different.
00:17We don't talk about that.
00:19We don't talk about wiener wars anymore.
00:20They didn't use guns at all.
00:22No.
00:22It was all swords.
00:23Anyway.
00:24Yeah, last time it was a lot of wieners.
00:28A lot of laughing.
00:29A lot of love.
00:29We learned the ABCs of love.
00:31Or relationships.
00:32Kissing, petting, getting some D.
00:34Yep.
00:36Yep.
00:36And then we also compared archery and boobies.
00:42Stop.
00:43Stop it!
00:51Shuching Academy Junior High is five-ish minutes away from the high school division.
00:55Okay.
00:56Because of the proximity, quite a few younger students meander over to have...
00:59To hang out with their seniors.
01:01Younger sister?
01:03Forgive the intrusion.
01:06So cute.
01:07So unbelievably cute.
01:08What am I saying?
01:10I shouldn't call someone cute before we've even introduced ourselves.
01:14It's the female version of...
01:16I'm the Shuching Junior High student council treasurer, Kei Shirogane.
01:20Mm-hmm.
01:20Kei Shirogane.
01:21Of course!
01:23This girl is the president's little sister.
01:25She even has the same cold death glare.
01:28Must run in a family.
01:29She's so excited by the death glare.
01:31They say that a past student council president was rude to some of the school's board members
01:36at a meeting like that.
01:38And they forced him to leave the country.
01:40Yes, well, that particular rumor has been embellished a bit.
01:43From what I understand, the student's father was just relocated to a country with a somewhat
01:47more rural economy.
01:48So he was forced to move then.
01:50It'll be fine.
01:51I swear by the Shinomia name, if anything unfortunate happens, I'll protect the president.
01:57Thank you, Shinomia.
01:58Subduing those closest to your target is a great way to ensure surrender.
02:02Building relationships with Shirogane's family members will strengthen the bond Kaguya
02:07has with him.
02:08Mm-hmm.
02:09I'll make his sister call me sister!
02:12If you don't mind, I could help you instead.
02:14Sound good?
02:15I've been told that I'm smarter than I look.
02:17Kaguya opens with a humblebrag.
02:20The sister Kei's never had money.
02:21The calculations are correct, but the use of commas isn't consistent.
02:25I'd like to consider a more reader-friendly layout, too.
02:28Would you recommend I stretch this out?
02:30Damn.
02:31Man, I was hooped in there.
02:32Yeah, Ishigami.
02:34I'd hate to get off on the wrong foot by criticizing her work and intimidating her.
02:37But she's taking critique with grace.
02:40Sister.
02:42If you came over for dinner, I'd be the happiest girl in the world.
02:45Really?
02:46All right.
02:46I think if I never had K, you would be the daughter I'd love.
02:51Jesus.
02:52She's a little starved for familial affection.
02:55Oh, the same.
02:57By the way, Shirakane.
02:59Well, we all go by that name here.
03:02Miyuki, then.
03:05Kaguya.
03:08I...
03:08It would be amazing if it actually got that far!
03:11We could talk to each other casually, we think.
03:13Salutate!
03:14Oh, K's here!
03:15Oh, no, she's already just Francis's sister with her.
03:19Uh-oh.
03:20Wave the sword.
03:22Have you girls met before?
03:23We have.
03:24Small world, huh?
03:25I got to know her since she and my sister are in the same year.
03:28Yep, it's thanks to me.
03:30I love that game we played the other day.
03:33Me, too.
03:34Remember that dance you made up?
03:36Wanna do it here?
03:37I see you've busied yourself forging alliances behind my...
03:40Oh, my gosh.
03:42My older sister role will be far more significant.
03:45Hate exists.
03:47Damn.
03:48Fujiwara takes everything I want.
03:50It's people like her who are destroying the planet.
03:53She's a repulsive, cancerous growth upon me.
03:56Oh, my gosh.
03:57She is a bit...
04:01Oh, my God.
04:04Her thoughtfulness is what I love about her most of my life.
04:07Would I?
04:09And she glided across the carpet on her chipped toe.
04:13Oh, that's so funny.
04:13I met your vice president.
04:16I could barely talk to her, though.
04:19What?
04:19Speak up.
04:20I said you suck!
04:24Results for today's battle.
04:26Kei Shirogane loses?
04:29Hmm.
04:30Why?
04:31He was unsure when he said that.
04:33There isn't any need to study for exams.
04:36What's that?
04:36Students should keep up with their studies all year so they won't have to cram.
04:40What does he do?
04:40He's lying.
04:42If there's one piece of advice I have for you three, it's to avoid cramming.
04:46He says that, but in reality, he requested time off from work so he could pull ten days of all
04:51night.
04:51Ten days?
04:52He's an outsider, so his grades are basically what make his peers accept him.
04:56And he'll do whatever it takes to maintain his status as the point.
04:58Whatever it takes.
04:59Even if that means manipulating others.
05:01So cramming to try and inflate your score seems counterintuitive to me.
05:06She's lying.
05:08Hehehehehehe.
05:08Kaguya doesn't always consider defeat to be humiliating.
05:12She knows that setbacks are necessary in order to unlock the secrets of success.
05:17Despite her genius and her best efforts, she has yet to top Shirogane even once.
05:22Being a creature of pride, that kind of defeat is an unforgivable disgrace to her.
05:27I'm studying harder than I ever have, honestly.
05:30In fact, I'm going to go hit the books right now.
05:33He's lying.
05:34That's waiting on him.
05:34The only thing he'll be applying himself to is his new video.
05:37Oh, fuck yeah.
05:40Gutsy move.
05:41Sometimes the best course of action is to abstain from studying at all.
05:45She's lying.
05:46Agreed.
05:47He's lying.
05:49God.
05:50I love him saying he's lying.
05:52Yes, it's settled then.
05:52I'm not going to study one bit.
05:54I love him.
05:55She's telling the truth.
05:57As a victim of Shirogane and Kami's ultimate warfare, Fujiwata's class rank has steadily...
06:02A victim of the warfare.
06:04No.
06:04She doesn't even realize that they're playing dirty.
06:07She never even took a chance.
06:08The exams are a battle that begins long before the students lift their pens.
06:11A battle in which these students use every bit of ingenuity they possess.
06:15That is what the final exams truly are.
06:21Wow, so you're not even a little bit nervous?
06:25Of course not.
06:26He's lying.
06:28The lies keep coming.
06:30He's so nervous.
06:31The only thing he's going to regurgitate is his breakfast.
06:33He can't even hold his pencil steady because of his shaky, shaky head.
06:37Shaky, shaky head.
06:39Study of Shirogane's weapon and he's lethal with it.
06:42He must take better crates than the girl who can do anything.
06:45Or else she'll be forever out of his league.
06:47Imagine how sore his neck would be from looking up at her.
06:53First and second again.
06:55Not bad.
06:56You know, I'm probably just getting lucky at this point.
06:59You'll beat me next time.
07:00What's done is done.
07:01I accept these results.
07:03She's still lying.
07:05Magogha is so frustrated.
07:06She's one dramatic transition away from crying tears.
07:09Dramatic transition?
07:14Keeps his dreams locked inside.
07:17This is what?
07:18The fourth time in a row?
07:19However, I was under a lot of pressure to excel.
07:23So to be completely honest, all I feel is relief.
07:27No, he lied.
07:28Oh yeah!
07:30I'm so pleased that he's begun shamelessly shadowboxing in the privacy of the bathroom.
07:35Yes.
07:36Results for today's battle.
07:43Oh, what was that result after the first semester?
07:46Okay.
07:46Fail any more tests and there's a grave possibility you'll be held back.
07:50Okay.
07:51Getting into this high school is nothing to sneeze at.
07:54Don't let the opportunity go to waste.
07:56At Shu-Chi Academy, a grade of less than half the average is considered failing and remedial courses are non
08:01-existent.
08:02If you fail two tests on a subject, you fail that subject.
08:06What?
08:06He's neck deep in hot water, yet he's acting like he's taking a relaxing dip in a hot spring.
08:12Maybe we can...
08:14Hey Shigami, would you mind coming with me for a moment?
08:18I'm going home, President!
08:20Are you having a panic attack?
08:21Calm down and come with me!
08:22You're gonna do something terrible to me!
08:24I can feel it!
08:29You're gonna do something terrible to me!
08:31Damn.
08:32I didn't have to use such drastic measures that you've just done as I said.
08:38What exactly do you plan to do with me?
08:41I imagine you already have some idea.
08:43I'm gonna help.
08:45Why does she have, like, a writing problem?
08:47I thought it was a ruler at first.
08:49It's...
08:49The first...
08:50The first during teaching.
08:54I'm confiscating your phone and blip-blooping device.
08:57No!
08:58Blip-blooping!
08:58Not the blip-blooping!
08:59No!
09:00So long as she doesn't make me eat small fish or force me to study, I might still retain some...
09:05Or force me to study?
09:07No, both of those things.
09:10Why?
09:11Why?
09:11They're chock-full of the omega-3 fatty acid DHA.
09:15Good, right?
09:16Is she gonna melt me from the inside out?
09:19Yes.
09:20Seems there may be hope for you after all.
09:24We're going to study at the same time tomorrow.
09:27And so, Kaguya's intensive training continued.
09:32Though Ishigami made several attempts to escape the clutches,
09:36God, she has the researches, too!
09:39Aw, so cool.
09:40Why was Jace studying in a dark, candlelit room?
09:44Just take your time until things click, okay?
09:46I think it's just more for the dramatics.
09:49What the hell is scared?
09:49By doing all of this?
09:50I'm not playing any game.
09:52Well, to think you have a compassionate bone in your body is mind-boggling.
09:56Frankly speaking, I don't usually do this kind of thing.
09:59Are Kaguya and him, like, together?
10:01Together?
10:02How?
10:03Give you three guesses.
10:04Ew!
10:06Let's call it a day.
10:08I'm sure you've heard about how I messed up in middle school.
10:11It's why everyone treats me like a ticking time bomb that might explode any minute.
10:15How can either of us expect to study when there's so much senseless noise in here?
10:20Excuse me?
10:22People are typically quiet in a library.
10:24Eh, eh.
10:25We're concerned.
10:27You shouldn't get mixed up with Ishigami.
10:29Oh, I see.
10:30You were worried.
10:32But I don't judge people based on what others say about them.
10:37Surely you girls aren't doubting my judgment.
10:43People can gossip about us all they want.
10:45I'm still going to tutor you.
10:47Really?
10:47I told you.
10:49On the Shinomia name.
10:51I swore that I would do all I could to help you pass the finals.
10:55Could have stopped dead.
10:57But I think she's got things under control.
10:59Hmm.
11:01Dang.
11:02I managed not to fail.
11:04All thanks to you.
11:07These numbers had better not be accurate.
11:10I, I really tried my best though.
11:13Explain to me why your best makes me feel so dirty.
11:17No.
11:17I'm afraid of you.
11:18She's reverted me.
11:21Jesus.
11:22She refuses to lie to herself.
11:24So if she gives her word, then come what may, she'll keep it.
11:28When we first met, I thought she was cold-hearted too.
11:31But then, I came to realize the truth.
11:33And I...
11:34And you're what, President?
11:37Um, just forget it.
11:38I appreciate her much more.
11:40Results for today's battle.
11:42Shirogane loses.
11:44I didn't know he could lose.
11:48Hmm.
11:48What was that about?
11:50I don't know.
11:50Hmm.
11:51Yeah, he said about he messed up in middle school.
11:53Mm-hmm.
11:54And then it kind of implied that he just wasn't going to school.
11:57Yeah.
11:57So I wonder like what he messed up or what he did or why he wasn't going to school or
12:00what.
12:01Just, you know, they talk about like, you know, the power that people have when they
12:06are the ones that's telling your story.
12:07You know, because whenever you mess up, they're going to start assigning, well, here's all
12:11the reasons they messed up.
12:12So that tends to become people's truth versus what actually is the truth.
12:17So I imagine a lot of this is him just, you know, having to live with people telling him
12:23how he is versus how he actually is.
12:26Mm-hmm.
12:26You know?
12:27Yeah.
12:27But she's right in that it doesn't matter.
12:30It's what you think.
12:31And, you know, so much of her character is built around making sure the president and
12:38those around her don't think she has the crush first, you know?
12:42Sure.
12:42Uh, so it's just ironic that, you know, she's, it's, it's, she's really good at giving that
12:47advice and not necessarily taking it.
12:50Yeah.
12:50Well, she's been raised to project a perception.
12:54She has.
12:55Yeah.
12:57And we got a little bit of an insight in that she has, she has starved for familial connection.
13:04Well, I think we kind of guessed that.
13:05Sure.
13:06She's called her dad and.
13:08Yeah.
13:09I mean, I.
13:09She's not.
13:10I.
13:10She's not doing anything.
13:11I don't, have you seen her parents?
13:12We haven't seen any of her family.
13:14We haven't seen any of her family.
13:14No.
13:15Just on the phone.
13:16Yeah.
13:17I just, like, this one is like, you know, I kind of assumed it was that way, but for
13:21here to be like, you know, to say she's starved for it, I'm like, okay, she gets
13:25pretty much nothing.
13:26Yeah.
13:27For her, like, anything is, is.
13:31Yeah.
13:32Crazy.
13:33Just seeing someone act familiar with another person is, is attractive to her.
13:40Mm-hmm.
13:41I guess I just assume kids in rich families don't have interactions with their parents
13:47as much.
13:47Yeah.
13:48When they have, like, butlers, servant drivers.
13:51Sure.
13:52Uh, et cetera.
13:52Hey, being a parent, half the time I feel like I don't get enough interaction with my
13:57kids because it's like, wow, you know, Ayla has gymnastics, but the time is when you drive
14:04them there, and then they're there for two hours or three hours or whatever, however long
14:07it is.
14:07And it's like, you're not spending time with them there.
14:08You're just, you're just chauffeuring around.
14:10Yeah.
14:10It's just the drive time.
14:11Yeah, because you're not the coach.
14:12You're not the trainer.
14:13And that's only if you have one kid taking them there, and you're not spending time with
14:16the other kids.
14:17Mm-hmm.
14:17They're at home or something, you know?
14:18Sure.
14:19So, let alone if, like, well, now you don't even have the drive time, because someone
14:22else is driving.
14:23But also, sometimes there's a lot to do, so having a driver would be nice.
14:27It would be nice.
14:28And I could figure out something else to do.
14:30Sure.
14:31You think you'll ever, I mean, I don't know where technology will go, but do you think
14:33you'll ever get to the point where, like, I'll just, I have a robot car, I'll just have
14:38it drive my kid.
14:39I don't know when I would trust a robot car for just me, even.
14:43You know?
14:44I don't know.
14:45Sure.
14:47Like, I'm still wary of, like, self-driving cars and stuff like that.
14:51How many of you have me drive?
14:52I'm behind the wheel.
14:56I know how you drive, so that makes, that's double it.
15:01Yeah, I don't know.
15:02Like, I watched iRobot, you know?
15:05Yeah.
15:06And that guy had the same thing.
15:08And then, you know what?
15:08He was right.
15:09He took over.
15:09I don't want someone else taking over my car.
15:11I want to take over my car.
15:12Right, I get you.
15:14Some, some guy's like, he has to go and he's programmed my car to drive off a cliff.
15:19I don't want to have that.
15:20I will control my own car.
15:21I'll buy old cars.
15:22Go get one of those old, buy an old Corvette with nothing in it, you know?
15:26No, no weird tech stuff.
15:28My generation?
15:30Something before tech stuff.
15:33I don't know.
15:33I always love the Stingrays.
15:34The Stingrays ones are always cool.
15:36That's the, uh, damn, what do they call it?
15:38Eleanor.
15:40That's my, that's my Eleanor.
15:41Is this thing right here?
15:42From Gone in 60 Seconds?
15:43Yeah.
15:44Eleanor was a, uh, what?
15:45Shelby GT.
15:46Shelby GT.
15:47He's the only reason I knew that.
15:48Shelby GT 500.
15:50Eleanor, yeah.
15:51Yeah.
15:52Hey, big sis.
15:53That was, that was good.
15:55Did you notice that Fujiwara's little sister also has a big rack?
15:59Yeah.
16:00No?
16:01I didn't.
16:03I just saw it, like, you see it for a second, I'm like, oh my god.
16:06It just runs in the family.
16:07It runs in the family.
16:08Yeah.
16:09Oh, it was funny.
16:11And then, uh, I thought it was, it's crazy that the show, it may get so dramatic, but
16:17we had Kaguya literally rolling around in blood.
16:20Sure.
16:20You know, during one of the visualizations.
16:21Sure.
16:22It was like, it was a visualization of what the narrator was describing her desire to
16:30do.
16:30If she wasn't in public, she'd be throwing a tantrum, crying blood.
16:34You could imagine her crying tears of blood.
16:37I did enjoy how much the narrator was in the neck, but she's lying.
16:41He's lying.
16:42He's lying.
16:42Yeah.
16:43She's lying, dude.
16:44She's still lying.
16:46Yeah.
16:46She's telling the truth.
16:47It really reminded me, I mean, Arrested Development has my favorite ongoing joke, which is, he
16:54wasn't.
16:55He didn't.
16:56And it really feels like that, but this intensity.
16:59Mm-hmm.
16:59I love it.
17:01And the Ishigami stuff was nice to see, like, I love that he's like, you know what?
17:06You're a kind person.
17:07I didn't realize how, like, you know, how good of a person.
17:10Oh, God, she's so scary again.
17:12You know?
17:12She chased back.
17:14Yeah.
17:14I really like the, like, oh, okay, we have growth here, and then it's reverted back immediately
17:17too.
17:18Yeah.
17:19No, I loved how she prioritized, like, making sure he didn't fail over whatever other
17:26people say about her.
17:27Because whatever other people say about her has been, like, her primary motivation other
17:31than love.
17:31Yeah.
17:33Well, she takes her word as, like, one of the most valuable things that she has.
17:39Her name, right?
17:41Well, sure.
17:41On the family name.
17:43On her name.
17:44Which I cannot besmirch.
17:46But it feels like, I don't know, maybe parents have broken too many promises, and one of
17:54the things that she holds as most valuable is somebody's word.
17:58Sure.
17:59Yeah, maybe.
18:01You know, even if it's not to her benefit anymore.
18:04If she said she's going to help Ishigami, like, she's going to make his scores better.
18:12I just felt like, my thought was, like, the family name is so important to her.
18:17Like, it's, she is part of that family.
18:19She doesn't have the same family connection, but she is part of that family.
18:22She's been told, like, this family means this.
18:24So, like, that's why she's swearing on the family name, too.
18:28And then now, I cannot besmirch my family.
18:30I have said that on my family, I will do this.
18:33Our family's too important.
18:34Because I forget what they said.
18:35They're important.
18:36They're rich, whatever.
18:37Well, they own, like, the largest conglomeration of corporations in the country, or something
18:44like that.
18:45Two trillion yen.
18:46Their money has money.
18:48Yeah.
18:49Exactly.
18:49One of those kind of things.
18:51They said Fujiwara, like, performs worse in school because she's a victim of their war.
18:59Yeah.
18:59It sucks.
19:00Because she takes their false advice to heart.
19:04Yeah.
19:04And she doesn't study.
19:06The three days before, just meditate.
19:08Don't do anything.
19:09Yeah.
19:09Oh, man.
19:10And then she didn't.
19:11So then she probably did worse because of it.
19:13Like, I have heard, like, hey, you know, don't study it all the way.
19:16Make sure you have, like, just.
19:17But, like, maybe three days before.
19:18Have one rest day.
19:19Yeah.
19:19Maybe do, like, the two days, do it.
19:21And then the third day, maybe don't, you know?
19:23Yeah.
19:24But I don't know if she studied at all.
19:26She didn't.
19:27And, like, Shinamiya was, like, well, it's really just, you know, checking to see what you have
19:32actually absorbed from classes.
19:33So study really does nothing if you haven't absorbed all this information throughout all
19:37of, you know, your study, your school time.
19:40So then she's like, oh, yeah, that makes sense.
19:41So she's just like, so what have I absorbed?
19:43It's like, not enough.
19:44Because you should have studied to make sure you knew it beforehand.
19:47Remind yourself, you know?
19:48Yeah.
19:48Because not all of the material can the teacher go over just in the time that you have class.
19:55Like, you have to study on your own and you have to do what helps your brain remember,
19:59which is, like, rereading, taking notes, doing descriptive notes.
20:05So that, like, just the act of writing something down, it uses more parts of your brain because
20:09you're activating the speech center, the fine motor center, and you're, like, programming
20:15your brain to recognize these symbols in this order so that you can remember it better.
20:20Like, it actually does help you remember better.
20:24Just, you only remember, like, 10% of a lecture after a day.
20:30But if you take notes on it, you remember, like, more than 50%.
20:34Yeah.
20:35Yeah.
20:36It definitely helps me.
20:37That's why I try to write notes during shows.
20:40I try to.
20:41Though, also, like, it helps other people better than others.
20:44Some people learn different ways, too.
20:45Sure.
20:46Yeah.
20:47But if I write something down, it means I was also paying more attention and thinking about
20:51that, too.
20:52Yeah.
20:52It made, like, okay, well, I definitely, this is something I remember now that happened.
20:56And hopefully I remember it better later, too.
20:57Because I also wrote it down.
20:58I always felt like I always performed better with, like, you know, like, explain your answer,
21:04like, open paragraph or, like, oral exam things, where it's just kind of, like, talk about
21:09it versus just, like, trying to figure out the exact facts, you know?
21:13I was always bad at that, especially for stuff like science and stuff like that.
21:19It was decent English.
21:21But that's a lot more creative, I guess.
21:24I don't know.
21:25Sure.
21:25Well, there's, like, was part of a religious faction that told me science was wrong.
21:31Sure.
21:31I get that.
21:32Like, English, it has rules.
21:35Yeah.
21:36But also, it has exceptions.
21:38Yeah.
21:38You can break them in fun ways.
21:39You can break them in fun ways and make it an expression.
21:44Mm-hmm.
21:44Or something like that, whereas, like, you can't really break math in fun ways.
21:50It just goes wrong.
21:51Yeah, I like math.
21:52You can do this and this, and that's the answer.
21:53I'm like, yes.
21:54Yeah.
21:55Good.
21:55I always liked it.
21:56Spell there.
21:57Which one?
21:58You know, I hated that.
21:59Damn it.
22:00Say it clearer.
22:04All right.
22:05Well, I don't know if we're any closer to anyone professing their love.
22:10I don't know if that's the point of the show, but I'm enjoying the ride of it.
22:15That he was, like, following them around to see, like.
22:20Yeah.
22:20Like, do I need to get involved?
22:22I think she has it handled.
22:23Yeah.
22:24He knew it was going on.
22:25It's like, he could have stepped in.
22:27But then he also talks about, like, that's what I like about her without saying that's
22:30what I like about her.
22:31Yeah.
22:32Because she seems cold, but honestly, there's a kind person in there.
22:35Yeah.
22:35I hate what you mean, though, Aaron.
22:37Like, will this be the show?
22:39Mm-hmm.
22:39Or will there be, like, season one, they weren't together.
22:41Season two, they are together.
22:43And you think the battle is over?
22:46Or, like, it's just begun.
22:47Sure, yeah.
22:47Or seven episodes in, I don't know if it's actually progress.
22:49Season two, like, one learns about the other, and then they have that over them.
22:53But they still, like, they still have to maintain the facade or something.
22:58Or it's going to be, like, Spy Family, and they just, there's never, it never happens.
23:03It's a successful performance.
23:04You're just hoping for it to happen.
23:06Yeah.
23:06And it never happens.
23:07I don't know.
23:08I don't know either.
23:09Let's find out.
23:10Another one.
23:11Yes, sir.
23:11Guys, thank you so much for watching.
23:13We hope you're enjoying Kaguya-sama.
