00:00Chad's army says at least 24 soldiers have been killed in an attack by Boko Haram militants
00:05on an army post in the Lake Chad region.
00:08The area has long been threatened by the Nigeria-based group,
00:11which is known for carrying out assaults in neighbouring countries.
00:14Army sources say the raid at the Barca Tolrom base late on Monday
00:18left 46 wounded on the Chadian side.
00:21An administrative official in the region says the situation is now under control.
00:25The military site is on the shores of Lake Chad,
00:28which straddles Cameroon, Niger, Nigeria and Chad.
00:31Its islands provide a refuge for various militants,
00:34including Boko Haram and other radical Islamist groups.
00:37In a post on Facebook, Chadian President Mohammed Idris Debi
00:41offered his condolences to the families of the dead soldiers.
00:44The army has increasingly come under fire from Boko Haram in the Lake Chad region.
00:49Recent months have also seen a surge in attacks by the group's JAS faction,
00:54including kidnappings and attacks on advanced army positions.
00:58Debi said the country would continue fighting with renewed determination
01:02until the threat from militant groups was completely eradicated.
