00:00Good afternoon. My name is Debbie Caron and I'm a senior Crown Prosecutor in the Homicide Unit for the Crown
00:06Prosecution Service.
00:08Today Nancy Pexton has been sentenced to life with a minimum term of 22 years imprisonment for the murder of
00:15her own sister Jennifer Abbott.
00:19Miss Abbott's death is an unimaginable tragedy. Whilst no sentence can bring her back, I hope today's outcome can give
00:27her family and friends some sense of closure.
00:31They have shown tremendous strength throughout this process and our thoughts remain with them all.
00:37Pexton carried out a brutal and callous attack, taking Miss Abbott's life in the very place she should have felt
00:44safest, at the hands of someone she should have been able to trust.
00:50She then attempted to cover her tracks, took her sister's most treasured possession and repeatedly denied what she had done.
01:00This was a complex case, but working closely with the Metropolitan Police, we as prosecutors carefully examined witness accounts,
01:11forensic evidence, the telephone data and CCTV to piece together the truth to ensure Jennifer Abbott received the justice that
01:22she truly deserved.
01:26US citizen 69-year-old Jennifer Abbott, who was last seen alive on a doorbell camera as she returned to
01:33her Camden flat from walking her corgi,
01:36named Prince at 7.36am that day.
01:40Her sister Nancy Pexton spoke to her by phone at 11.36am and travelled by bus to her Mornington Place
01:49flat at 12.45pm.
01:52Leaving an hour later.
01:55She then called her GP, reported taking an overdose and was taken to hospital where she stayed before her arrest
02:02on the 18th of June.
02:04On the 13th of June, a neighbour used a scaffolding pole to break down Miss Abbott's door.
02:11After becoming concerned he could not hear her dog barking.
02:14Her niece, Mai Pexton, had been seen banging on the door and screaming for her quote-unquote auntie.
02:22Miss Abbott's partially naked and decomposing body was found on the living room floor with gaffer tape over her mouth.
02:30Miss Abbott's corgi had been trapped in the kitchen but was freed by firefighters.
02:35A post-mortem examination found Miss Abbott had sustained a number of stab wounds and a single defensive wound to
02:44the right hand.
02:45Her Rolex watch, a gift from her son, was missing.
02:49It was later recovered by police from Pexton's bag after they visited her in hospital.
