00:00The Stars make the playoffs, as it is time for the Stars and Mavericks Super Segment.
00:08And I assume you want to start with the Stars, right?
00:11Yeah, I mean, like the Stars are leading us to a playoff run.
00:15I've already said that Conn Smythe's going to be Jason Roberts to hoist this year.
00:20You've got to re-sign Robertson, right, if that's the case.
00:23Yes.
00:24And here's the difference.
00:26Somebody texted in and was like, you guys are forgetting.
00:28This was last week.
00:29You guys are forgetting that he doesn't do this in the playoffs.
00:32No, I don't forget that.
00:33As a matter of fact, I talk about it more than anybody.
00:36Kevin, do you agree that I brought this up the last few years now?
00:39And I still think that that is debatable in the first two rounds.
00:44Western Conference Finals, you got me there.
00:46That being said, I want a different level player,
00:49and I've always felt like he's a little too, a step too slow,
00:53and not as physical as I want.
00:54However, we're watching a dude that's making space for himself.
00:58We're watching a dude that right now is doing stuff he doesn't typically do in the regular season.
01:02So you think he feels different so far?
01:04I think he's changed.
01:04I think the USA snub, and I think the fact that it's also contract season for him, in a way.
01:12Yeah.
01:12And also the fact that he sees what this team needs, and it's not just him doing it.
01:20It's everybody.
01:21This seems more like a mentality that Glenn Gullitson has set the standard for,
01:27and I think Jason Robertson has taken it to heart and said, you know what?
01:30He's right.
01:30If we need this, I need to be this player.
01:33But the fact is, he is a guy that I feel like if you just say, Jason Robertson had a
01:38point,
01:39everybody goes, yeah, you're right, he did.
01:40And I think that's, like, if he can do that throughout the playoffs,
01:44where it's just like, Jason Robertson had another point,
01:46then I think he's going to set himself up for a really good position for that.
01:49Okay.
01:50I like that.
01:52So for the stars...
01:54That's my polymarket prediction.
01:55Oh!
01:56While it's still legal, I appreciate what you're doing right there.
02:02So I thought the stars have looked really meh the last couple of games.
02:11And I understand there's two ways you can spin it, right?
02:15This is just the second time in the last 19 games that the stars have lost in regulation.
02:21Oh, wow.
02:22That's pretty damn good.
02:23Or you could say, hey, in the last four games, they've lost three of them.
02:30And two of those have been in regulation after getting walloped by the Mammoth
02:36and then losing last night to Vegas.
02:38However, the bonus of all of this is you look at the unbelievable run of hockey they had before that,
02:45and it was inevitable that something like this was going to happen.
02:48I thought Matt Duchesne hit right, just got right to the point last night.
02:52And he goes, we didn't deserve to win tonight, and we didn't.
02:55And so sometimes you don't see that in sports like hockey and soccer.
03:00Maybe you don't always feel like the best team won.
03:04But last night, the stars were not the best team, and they went up against a Vegas team that was
03:08struggling.
03:09They had lost three in a row.
03:12And then there's the bizarre nature of the power play.
03:16So the stars had a four-minute power play where they didn't get a single shot on goal.
03:26Okay.
03:27So that's like as bad as it gets.
03:29But then on the flip side, you get as good as it gets because Wyatt Johnston was making freaking history
03:38at 22 years old.
03:40He sets the stars' single-season power play goal record at 23.
03:45By the way, the only person who's had more power play goals in a season this century is Leon Dreisaitl,
03:51and he had 27.
03:52He's in Germany, I think, right now trying to figure out how to get himself back on the ice.
03:58Or Connor McDavid's saying, trade me to somebody else.
04:00There is some weirdness happening with the Oilers right now.
04:03But yeah, so in the same game...
04:05Because Gollinson's not there anymore.
04:06Oh, see, I like that.
04:08I like that.
04:09So in the same game where you get a record, you also have a god-awful power play.
04:14And that was kind of the up-and-down nature that I thought was more down than up for the
04:19stars yesterday,
04:20and quite frankly, the game before.
04:22Yeah.
04:24Yes, I see what you're saying there, too.
04:26I kind of gave them a little bit of that Colorado game took a lot out of them because they...
04:33Makes sense.
04:33The game against the Mammoth, it looked like they were just like, screw it.
04:36Don't even worry about this third period.
04:38Let's just go ahead and focus on Colorado.
04:39Colorado's coming up in two days.
04:41And then, again, Colorado, I think it lost that night, too, so it didn't lose any ground,
04:46so you had a chance to shrink through.
04:47But you're back to five.
04:49Yeah.
04:49You're back to five points away, and I don't know how much you want to continue taking out of yourself
04:54the rest of the way here, but I think one other thing to add, Kevin, is during this stretch,
04:59while they were so good, they didn't have Miko, right?
05:03Like, they were injured.
05:04Yes.
05:04And then they go do that against Colorado without Miko, without Rope.
05:09And so everybody's kind of like, okay, hold on.
05:12You probably need those guys back.
05:14Yeah, and it looks like Miko's got a chance to come back at the end of this four-game road
05:18trip.
05:18Indeed!
05:19That's kind of one of the things that you're really hoping is that he is traveling with the team,
05:24he's planning to travel with them, and then hopefully by the end of this road trip,
05:29he'll be back out on the ice.
05:31That could really help this team a lot, not just having the skill on the ice, but the legs, too.
05:35Yeah, absolutely.
05:36Look, I know it didn't happen so much in the Vegas game, but if you go back the night before
05:40against the Wild, other than Blackwell, who was only one for three,
05:45and this is courtesy of our good buddy Robert Tiffin,
05:47anyone on Dallas who took at least three draws won 55% or better.
05:53So you've been without some of your top face-off men, and you've gotten some still good results.
05:58We've talked about the power play, that one four-minute one notwithstanding,
06:04is you've gotten some good special teams play, even without some of your go-to power play people.
06:11But you mentioned it.
06:13Jim Nill said Miko's going to be with the team full-time, going forward, practicing.
06:18He's going to go with the team for the four-game road trip,
06:21and the hope is he'll be able to play by the last two games of the trip.
06:26So hopefully you're only going to be without Miko at most two more games.
06:32Honestly, probably two more games.
06:34And then when you hit next weekend, you've got the back-to-back with Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
06:39Philadelphia, then perhaps that's when you're going to roll into that.
06:43Or maybe it'll end up being Philadelphia-Boston, because it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense
06:48to bring him back for a back-to-back.
06:50So maybe you wait until Philly and Boston.
06:52Yeah, and then with Hintz and Foxa, you're kind of in that, all right, playoff time.
06:58So good luck, guys.
06:59Sorry.
06:59You get Miko back, but these guys might not be back until then.
07:03Hopefully they have fresh legs.
07:04They get that thing rocking as soon as the playoffs hit.
07:07But right now, adding a Miko back to this team, I think would give them an offensive punch
07:13that could be very helpful.
07:14Oh, yeah.
07:15It's also one of those things of Glenn Gullitson can't just be like,
07:18all right, he's back out on the ice, and everybody goes, okay, let Miko do his thing.
07:22It's kind of got to be the same thing that they've been doing along this way,
07:25and that is playing deep hockey and playing deep team hockey at the same time.
07:31They have had this hungry look about them, and I don't want them to lose that before the end of
07:36the year.
07:36Yeah, no, I'm with you, and you know what?
07:39I think on Wednesday, because the Stars play again on Tuesday,
07:42I think to go along with the result of that game against the Devils,
07:45I started to do a deep dive into the President's Trophy curse
07:49because people are texting in about that, and they're like, you let Colorado have it.
07:53I did a little bit more research to kind of go along with that,
07:57but even with the loss to Minnesota, I still feel comfortable
08:00as that is easily your most likely first-round matchup.
08:05You do have to play against Jack Hughes.
08:08Yeah.
08:09I don't know if you know this.
08:10He's an American hero.
08:11He is.
08:12Based on things.
08:13Canada still hates him.
08:14They won't even let him have the puck, but he is an American hero right now.
08:18Did y'all talk about that last week?
08:19Yeah.
08:20That's a funny thing.
08:21I think it's fascinating because I'm of the belief that let the dude have it.
08:26Right.
08:26But I saw a lot more people that were like, it's not his.
08:29That is history's.
08:31And I was like, whoa, hold on.
08:32Am I off base on this?
08:34And most hockey fans, from what I was seeing, too, Kevin, they were against it, too.
08:39They were like, no, that's not yours.
08:41Well, and that's the Hall of Fame.
08:42The way they got to the point goes, well, it was never yours.
08:45It was never yours.
08:45I was like, oh, man, okay.
08:47So we just cut right to the chase there.
08:51All right.
08:51Go ahead and let's shift over.
08:54Let's do some maps.
08:55Go ahead and give me cut number six because I was hoping this would be a heroic moment
09:00for one Cooper flag.
09:02Cooper with it.
09:03Gafford screening.
09:04Cooper pulls up.
09:05Shoots.
09:06No good.
09:07Offensive rebound.
09:08Washington shot is late.
09:09He made it.
09:11They'll look at it.
09:12But will they have to?
09:16And you can hear Derek Harper about to jump in there.
09:18He's like, I don't think he got it.
09:20And that's how you knew it was a no-go.
09:23So the Mavs lose again at home.
09:27I believe that is 10 straight losses at home.
09:30And the franchise record is 12.
09:33All right.
09:33Set around 93.
09:34We're shooting for the franchise record?
09:3694.
09:37I mean, I guess.
09:38Are we trying to tie it or are we trying to win this one?
09:42I mean, me personally, I want the better draft pick, so I'm fine with the way this is going.
09:48I just would love, I would have loved to see Cooper flag get that game winner to build up
09:53that clutch confidence because that was something that whether going back to the Houston game
09:58in the final four or early in Duke season when he was a freshman, he struggled in some of those
10:03late game last second potential game winning situations.
10:07But on the flip side, I'm sure there's a whole lot of people like, yes, lose the game.
10:12Lose the game to put yourself in better position for a better draft pick.
10:18And I believe following up, since we just heard him on the call, it was Mark Falwell who said
10:25he has been tracking Cooper flag all year to look at some of those averages.
10:30And right now, he's first in points per game, fourth in rebounds, second in assists, third
10:36in steals, and fifth in blocks.
10:39The only five rookies that have done that since 95-96 are Paul Pierce, Vince Carter, Kenyon
10:47Martin, Ben Simmons, Scotty Barnes, and Wemby.
10:50I mean, that's a pretty damn good class.
10:52But I know some people are like, hey, I'm expecting him to be better than Martin or Simmons
10:58or Barnes or people like that.
11:00And Wemby.
11:02Great.
11:05Are you saying that he can't be better than Wemby?
11:07I'm not saying that.
11:07Why would we even draft this kid?
11:08I am not saying that.
11:11Well, I would argue with the logic of that.
11:13If he can't be better than Wemby, don't draft him.
11:15And I'm like, well, he'll be almost as good.
11:17And you're like, oh, well, that's pretty damn good.
11:19I'm with you.
11:20Yes, I would also like if he was better than Wemby.
11:23But the Spurs and Wemby just feel so far ahead of where I thought they would be.
11:28And I had high expectations for them.
11:30I don't know if I can say that quite yet.
11:34Yeah, I'll give him credit, Alec.
11:36I feel like Kevin did always temper the expectation of Cooper Flagg.
11:41He was pretty much saying the whole time he'll never live up to Wemby is what I believe you said.
11:48Yep.
11:48Hmm.
11:49I don't feel like.
11:51As a matter of fact, I feel like it was.
11:53That's what I just said.
11:54I feel like it was Kevin saying Wemby's going to be in the way of all the championships Cooper Flagg
11:58could have won.
11:59I don't.
11:59Again, I don't feel like that is.
12:02How many Western Conference Finals will Flagg lose to Wemby based on what you're feeling right now?
12:07One.
12:08But he'll beat him in the other three.
12:11Boom!
12:12How about that?
12:13I can't wait, dude.
12:14I cannot wait.
