00:00A Chinese citizen has been indicted for allegedly receiving money from Beijing to interfere
00:06in Taiwan's elections, and she could lose her residency status here.
00:11Xu Chunying got a Taiwanese passport after marrying a Taiwanese citizen, and has lived
00:16in the country for many years.
00:18She previously headed a committee set up by the smaller opposition Taiwan People's Party
00:23to serve the so-called new immigrant community here.
00:26But in March, she was indicted for allegedly providing information to Beijing about Taiwan's
00:32elections and political situations, as well as about other Chinese citizens living in
00:37Taiwan.
00:38She has denied these allegations.
00:41Now local media are reporting that the government is planning to revoke her permanent residency,
00:46which would take away her legal status in Taiwan.
00:49It also plans to dissolve an organization she ran that was supposed to help support other
00:54Chinese citizens living here.
00:57Asked for confirmation, Taiwan's Interior Ministry told Taiwan Plus that it will handle Xu's
01:02legal status in accordance with the law, without specifying which one.
01:07It also said it will take disciplinary action against Xu's organization, which failed to hold
01:12elections to replace leaders that had exceeded their terms in office.
01:16This is just the latest case of controversy involving Chinese citizens who have settled in Taiwan
01:21through marriage, often called Chinese spouses.
01:25Multiple Chinese citizens were deported last year over social media posts the government said advocated
01:31for military unification with China.
01:34This year, a Chinese citizen was sworn in as a legislator in Taiwan, sparking protests from officials
01:40who said her Chinese citizenship made that illegal and caused national security concerns.
01:45Meanwhile, opposition parties have proposed relaxing various restrictions for Chinese citizens living in Taiwan.
01:52One analyst says cases like this show it's urgent for Taiwan to re-evaluate its national security policies.
02:21But HONG stresses that not all Chinese citizens living in Taiwan are involved in such cases, and should not be
02:27used to judge the entire
02:29group. The case once again highlights the challenges that Taiwan faces in balancing the rights of its China-born
02:36residents with national security concerns, as tensions with Beijing continue to rise.
