You've heard of F-1 racing, but there's another grassroots motorsport that's sweeping Australia’s country towns. Lawn mower racing is fostering a community of revheads across all ages.

00:11It was all dirt, no grass at the All-Australian Warnmower Racing Championships just north of Rockhampton.
00:19The nation's fuel crisis couldn't put the brakes on this event, with racers from across the country gathering for the
00:26unique motorsport.
00:28Emily Butcher isn't old enough to get her car licence yet, but that hasn't stopped the 11-year-old from
00:35tearing up the tracks.
00:37I think it's really fun and how it's really loud and powerful and it's really fast.
00:44My friends are like, oh my gosh, that's so cool.
00:46Bill Vaughan calls himself a 1932 model, the 94-year-old catching the need for speed later in life.
00:55I've got a couple of firsts, I think, and seconders, third maybe, and a fourth.

01:02There was plenty of rev action and a little bit of road rage.
01:07Organisers say the community and camaraderie is what brings people back every year.

01:32They raced their lawnmowers downhill.
01:36And so began the birth of a new sport.
01:39With hundreds of members across the country, mower racing is growing in popularity,
01:45partially because it's cheaper than most motorsports.
01:49Just don't expect these rev heads to tend to your garden anytime soon.
