Transcript
00:00:24Hey, Mom.
00:00:25Oh, thanks, sweetheart.
00:00:28Ready to start digging?
00:00:31I guess so.
00:00:33How come you plant sunflowers in the spring
00:00:35and sunflowers in the fall?
00:00:38Well, it's just nature's way.
00:00:40For example, the almanac says that we should plant roses
00:00:43in the spring and tulips in the fall,
00:00:46and the almanac is never wrong.
00:00:48Dad says the almanac's nothing but make-believe.
00:00:52Hmm.
00:00:52Don't believe everything your father says.
00:00:55Does that mean I don't have to listen to him anymore?
00:00:59No, no.
00:01:01It just means that he knows a little bit more
00:01:02about baseball and football
00:01:04than he does about tulips.
00:01:06And whether he knows a lot about weather.
00:01:08Oh, yes.
00:01:09He knows about weather.
00:01:10I've seen a lot of weather.
00:01:12Some nasty stuff.
00:01:14The supercell is big.
00:01:16Really big.
00:01:19Wind shear's got to be close to 180 degrees.
00:01:23Man, this is ugly.
00:01:28Wind's picking up.
00:01:32Splashes are increasing in frequency,
00:01:34and we got tight circulation.
00:01:36It's gonna be go time.
00:01:37We calling it in?
00:01:38Call it in!
00:01:41Chad is book.
00:01:44Go ahead, book.
00:01:45Yeah, we're on Highway 118, mile marker 276.
00:01:50Smack in the middle of it.
00:01:51Hey, Lincoln says it looks pretty bad over there.
00:01:53What do you got?
00:01:54Yeah, Jensen's confirming
00:01:55high probability of vortex formation.
00:01:59How long?
00:02:00How long?
00:02:01Any minute.
00:02:02Any minute.
00:02:03Tell him to issue a warning.
00:02:04Issue a warning, Link.
00:02:12So, what's up?
00:02:13So, we're gonna issue a warning.
00:02:14Jensen and Booker called it in.
00:02:16Off a confirmed visual?
00:02:19Guys, you know the rules.
00:02:21We don't issue warnings
00:02:22unless we have visual confirmation.
00:02:24This is the weather service, for Pete's sakes.
00:02:26We're not a psychic shop.
00:02:37Uh, right here.
00:02:39I'll be right back.
00:03:05Kara?
00:03:07Come with Mom.
00:03:09Come on.
00:03:09Come on, what is it?
00:03:10What's wrong?
00:03:15Mom, what's wrong?
00:03:16Then hold on to me, Kara.
00:03:18Hold on tight.
00:03:19Mom, I'm scared.
00:03:21Pete, hurry, go.
00:03:22Go to the shelter, okay?
00:03:24Uh!
00:03:28Uh!
00:03:30Ah!
00:03:31Mom, are you all right?
00:03:32I can't get up!
00:03:33Uh!
00:03:34Uh!
00:03:37Uh!
00:03:41Uh!
00:03:46You're losing the wind.
00:03:48It's not funneling here.
00:03:49It's on the move.
00:03:51Yeah, but where?
00:03:52Ah!
00:03:57Kara, get to the shelter, okay?
00:03:59Go!
00:04:00No, Mom, I don't want to leave you!
00:04:01Kara!
00:04:02Kara!
00:04:03Kara!
00:04:03Do what I tell you!
00:04:04Okay, go, now!
00:04:06I love you!
00:04:07I love you!
00:04:09I love you!
00:04:10I love you!
00:04:11Where is she going?
00:04:13I don't know.
00:04:15Chad, it's book.
00:04:19We just got a call that's a visual confirmation.
00:04:23Tornado touched down.
00:04:24Where?
00:04:25Tower, Kara.
00:04:28We gotta go now.
00:04:45Kara!
00:04:46Kara, listen to me!
00:04:47Listen to me, listen to me!
00:04:48Go to the shelter!
00:04:50You go!
00:04:51Hurry!
00:04:51Hurry, hurry, hurry!
00:04:52Hurry!
00:04:54Oh, no!
00:04:59Mom!
00:05:02I love you, Mom!
00:05:11Help me!
00:05:30What's going on?
00:05:32Looks like a probable F5.
00:05:33Been down for 10 minutes, maybe more.
00:05:35What's its 20?
00:05:36Call's been sketchy. It's hard to say.
00:05:38We could be tracking multiple twisters.
00:05:40How long ago did the warning go on?
00:05:44Three minutes after touchdown.
00:05:46Three minutes after?
00:05:48Peace.
00:05:50It's hitting Tyler.
00:05:54Mary.
00:06:33Mary.
00:06:33Mary.
00:06:37We'll be back.
00:06:40We'll be back.
00:06:47I'm back.
00:06:48I'm back.
00:06:57A string of deadly twisters bore down on the Midwest today,
00:07:00leaving a path of destruction and grief in their wings.
00:07:03Fierce tornadoes ripped through the heartland, leaving power lines down.
00:07:06Hospitals flooded with injured and dead, and thousands of homes were destroyed.
00:07:12Disaster areas were declared in at least three counties,
00:07:15and the National Guard was on the scene Sunday.
00:07:17Federal Emergency Management Agency officials were on their way to Oklahoma in the aftermath of the storm.
00:07:22And the president was being briefed on the damage to the state, according to White House officials.
00:07:27Emergency crews worked through the night trying to free trapped victims from a massive amounts of debris
00:07:32left through the lake of today's traps.
00:07:34Officials won't give word on the death toll yet,
00:07:36but it's safe to say that this could easily be the worst devastation ever wrought by nature's devil wings.
00:07:43After a second straight day of disaster recovery,
00:07:45the eyewitness accounts are starting to come in.
00:07:48I saw a big black cloud, said a Tyler resident.
00:07:50I started seeing everything flying around.
00:07:52I got into the bathtub and put a hammer over my head so glass would be flying to my eyes.
00:07:56And within a minute, it was lifted straight out.
00:07:59And while this lucky resident is glad to be alive,
00:08:02many other victims of the disaster were not misfortunate.
00:08:07With the death toll now at 134,
00:08:10local emergency crews pray the number doesn't rise any further...
00:08:14But the real question for Tyler residents
00:08:15is how can they get back to their normalized
00:08:18after so much has been taken away?
00:08:31Whatever happened to Sprint?
00:08:34It's cold.
00:08:37It's cold, no?
00:08:40Hello, Pete?
00:08:46You know, sometimes I feel
00:08:48it's like talking to a brick wall with you.
00:08:53I'm sorry, Lou.
00:08:54My mind's just somewhere else.
00:08:56What were you saying?
00:08:57I was having a conversation.
00:08:58I said,
00:08:59it's cold.
00:09:01Now you answer.
00:09:05A low-pressure front coming down from Canada
00:09:07connecting with the jet stream.
00:09:10It's unusual for this time of year,
00:09:11but it's not unheard of.
00:09:14That's a conversation?
00:09:16That's a weather report?
00:09:18Let me ask you something, Pete.
00:09:20If I said I was hungry,
00:09:21would you give me the chemical makeup of a cheeseburger?
00:09:24Well, what do you want from me, Lou?
00:09:25Weather's something I know about, you know?
00:09:28All right, I'm gonna get a cup of coffee.
00:09:30You want anything?
00:09:31Yes, please.
00:09:38All units be advised
00:09:39for a yellow early-long small boat
00:09:41inspected of a 459.
00:09:43Suspect is rotating male 16R.
00:09:59This is actually 117
00:10:01in pursuit of a 459 suspect
00:10:03heading southbound on Grand.
00:10:05Just passing the 1600 block.
00:10:19Send a black-and-white pickup, Lou,
00:10:21at the corner of Grand and L.
00:10:43Suspect now heading eastbound on Broadway.
00:10:46Good luck.
00:10:59Good luck.
00:11:03Good luck.
00:11:09Oh, my God.
00:11:48Freeze! Police officer!
00:11:51Stay right where you are.
00:11:53Hands up.
00:11:54Okay, yeah.
00:11:57Come back slowly towards me.
00:12:01Keep coming.
00:12:02Keep coming.
00:12:04All right.
00:12:04All right, slowly.
00:12:07You got any weapons on you?
00:12:08No, no, no.
00:12:09How come I don't believe you?
00:12:12Okay, okay.
00:12:21All right.
00:12:24All right.
00:12:27All right.
00:12:41You are under arrest.
00:12:45You have the right to remain silent.
00:12:47Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
00:12:50If you need an attorney, one will be appointed to you.
00:12:53Do you understand what I'm saying?
00:12:54Huh?
00:12:55Hey.
00:12:57Good take here, Chris.
00:13:03Fight, fight, fight.
00:13:04All the time you gotta fight.
00:13:06Seemed like a good idea at the time.
00:13:09Why'd you leave me?
00:13:11You can't barely pass me, Lou.
00:13:13I didn't have a choice.
00:13:14No, I thought it was something I said.
00:13:16Oh.
00:13:17You're gonna have to stop talking.
00:13:20I hate it.
00:13:21I hate it when I miss a good chase.
00:13:24All day long.
00:13:25It's as boring as lawn bowling.
00:13:27And then I get a good chance at some blood pumping action.
00:13:30Blood pumping?
00:13:32Blood pumping.
00:13:33And what does that teach you?
00:13:35Next time we hit a drive-thru.
00:13:38Powerful lesson indeed.
00:13:39You're welcome.
00:13:40You're welcome.
00:13:41You have to keep someone a drink.
00:13:42Yeah.
00:13:45All right.
00:14:05Hello, Mr. Peter Jensen, this is Annette from UVU Credit calling about a great credit transfer
00:14:10offered that we are extending to only our very special customers. I think those are the pulse.
00:14:17You can reach me at 555-1478. Thanks for your time.
00:14:23Yeah, Peter, this is Mike at the service department. You're okay on the fronts, but you're gonna need rear brakes
00:14:28and rotors.
00:14:29I'll get you a quote as quick as I can. Yeah, Peter, it's Mike again. You're looking at $549 for
00:14:36the rears.
00:14:37I'm done changing the fluids and I'll wait to hear from you to get the go-ahead, so call me.
00:14:43Peter, it's me, Margaret. I'm calling to remind you that Kara's graduation is not Saturday.
00:14:49I haven't heard back from you. Hope you haven't forgotten.
00:15:12Captain Tillman's office. Hey, Gundy, it's Jensen. Is the captain around?
00:15:17He's gone for the day. You need me to page him?
00:15:20No, no, no. You know all the vacation time he's been telling me to take?
00:15:24Yeah?
00:15:25I'm taking it. Thanks.
00:15:41...the stationary cold front still sits in the north. Closed 60s and a high today of 72. Now, up to
00:15:48Jill with the traffic report on the 8s.
00:15:50A real jam on the 17, and the Jack Knight tractor-trailer is walking off the four lanes of the
00:15:55chassis.
00:16:10Anybody home?
00:16:13Margaret?
00:16:36Margaret?
00:16:37So you think you can just come waltzing in here like you own the place?
00:16:40What was that for?
00:16:41For forgetting your mother-in-law's birthday.
00:16:44When was it?
00:16:45Last Tuesday.
00:16:46You know what? I didn't forget.
00:16:48Oh, maybe better if you did. Who wants to be reminded they're getting old anyway?
00:16:53Go on, open it up.
00:16:56No, I'm gonna open it by myself. I know you, Peter Jensen. You probably make me cry.
00:17:03Welcome back.
00:17:04I was just afraid I wouldn't be able to get the time off.
00:17:06Well, I'm glad you did. You're staying here with us.
00:17:08No, I got a room at the motel.
00:17:10Nonsense.
00:17:11I don't want to crowd you girls.
00:17:12Carol will be surprised that you're here.
00:17:15You didn't tell her I was coming?
00:17:17She's in Tulsa.
00:17:19What is she doing there?
00:17:20She's attending some sort of biochemical conference with one of her colleagues from the EDAC.
00:17:26She'll be back tomorrow.
00:17:28The EDAC?
00:17:29Environmental Disease and Control, where she's been interning for the past six months.
00:17:34If you paid more attention, you'd know that.
00:17:36She didn't tell me.
00:17:37Did you ask?
00:17:39No.
00:17:40Well, if you're hungry, there's some fried chicken in the fridge.
00:17:44Why don't you let me take you out for a nice dinner?
00:17:46I'd love to.
00:17:47Okay, not tonight.
00:17:48Got my Mahajan game.
00:17:51Come back tomorrow around seven, and I'll whip you up something special.
00:17:57Have a good time.
00:18:14See, ladies, it's simple geometry.
00:18:17Plot the angle of deflection.
00:18:19Works almost every time.
00:18:2120 bucks says you can't do that again.
00:18:26Well, well, look who the cat dragged in.
00:18:29I thought I might find you here.
00:18:30Pete, how the heck are you?
00:18:31Pretty good, thanks.
00:18:33Let me buy you a beer.
00:18:35With my money.
00:18:35How generous.
00:18:39What'd you get in town?
00:18:40This afternoon.
00:18:41What's the occasion?
00:18:43Kara's graduation.
00:18:44No.
00:18:45Yes.
00:18:45I can't believe it.
00:18:47It seems just like yesterday.
00:18:48She was learning to walk.
00:18:49Now she's graduating college and working at the EDAC.
00:18:53Wow.
00:18:54Guess she got her mother's brains as well as her good looks.
00:18:58I still remember the night Kara was born.
00:19:00You were so anxious to get to the hospital,
00:19:01you grabbed the bag with the portable weather station in it
00:19:04instead of the one with Mary's clothes.
00:19:06Never forget the look on that nurse's face
00:19:07when she pulled out the foot-long thermometer.
00:19:09I told her it was for external use only.
00:19:14How about you?
00:19:15What have you been up to?
00:19:15Same old, same old.
00:19:16Chasing storms, lecturing in the off-season.
00:19:19How about you?
00:19:20You still chasing bad guys?
00:19:21Catching a big difference.
00:19:25For more on this story,
00:19:26let's go to Julia Merrow, live from Tyler.
00:19:29Thank you, Jess.
00:19:30We're here in the town of Tyler.
00:19:32This Thursday will be ten years to the day
00:19:35in which the worst set of Twisters in U.S. history
00:19:38bore down on this community.
00:19:39The Twisters cut a 20-mile path of destruction
00:19:42as they weave their way through central Oklahoma,
00:19:45leaving death and havoc in their wake.
00:19:48This new environmental disease and control center
00:19:51replaced only one of many buildings destroyed
00:19:53by the very same winds that killed 128 people
00:19:56and caused over $400 million in damage.
00:20:00For the rest of this week,
00:20:02I will be bringing you a series of special reports
00:20:05exploring the events of that terrible day.
00:20:07Let's get out of this dump.
00:20:08We can head back to my place,
00:20:09round up a couple of the guys, get a game going.
00:20:11Well, it's been a long day.
00:20:13I think I'm just gonna hit the sack.
00:20:15Come by the office tomorrow.
00:20:17We'll grab some lunch, catch up.
00:20:18Tomorrow sounds great.
00:20:20Thanks for the beer.
00:20:21All right.
00:20:344 a.m. 4 a.m. 4 a.m.
00:20:39It's going somewhere else.
00:20:43No!
00:20:45Mary!
00:20:47No!
00:20:48Please!
00:20:50Tara?
00:20:52Tara?
00:20:53No.
00:20:55It's what I do, it's what I do, it's what I do.
00:20:58But we have a daughter now.
00:21:04Wait, no!
00:21:07Things are supposed to get easier, aren't you?
00:21:08It's supposed to get easier.
00:21:13There won't be anything left to prove.
00:21:15No, man.
00:21:16Don't let anything left to prove.
00:21:19This close .
00:21:20This close .
00:21:21This close .
00:21:23Please, please, please, please, please, please.
00:22:15I brought you some flowers.
00:22:19I looked for tulips. I know they're your favorite,
00:22:21but they didn't have them.
00:22:26I know I don't come to visit as much as I should,
00:22:29or even as much as I want to, but...
00:22:34I think about you every day.
00:22:38None of the day goes by that I don't think about us.
00:22:41I love you, Mia. I miss you.
00:22:47Welcome back.
00:22:50I love you, Mia.
00:22:50Cara, how have you been?
00:22:53Fine.
00:22:54You look terrific.
00:22:56Oklahoma really agrees with you.
00:22:58Why wouldn't it?
00:23:00Yeah, your mother always looked at you too.
00:23:03It's a shame you never felt the same way.
00:23:05I'm actually amazed to see you here.
00:23:08You think I'd miss your graduation?
00:23:09I think you'd find any excuse not to come back.
00:23:12Cara, that's not fair.
00:23:14It's been four years, but hey, who's counting?
00:23:17Cara, this is all about you, nothing else.
00:23:19I gotta go.
00:23:36She's a real beauty.
00:23:37Name's Casey.
00:23:38I've been tracking her for a week now.
00:23:40This morning, she was upgraded to Tropical Storm.
00:23:44Come on, Pete.
00:23:44Good eat.
00:23:45Let's go eat.
00:23:46Come on, Pete.
00:23:48Just to live and breathe this stuff.
00:23:49You used to eat crayons through high school.
00:23:51Things change.
00:23:52I can't believe you brought that up.
00:23:54Well, we're not going.
00:23:56We're not going where?
00:23:57We're not going for lunch.
00:23:58Something better's coming.
00:23:59What could possibly be better than Rose's chili burgers
00:24:02and fries?
00:24:02Besides, I'm buying it.
00:24:04We're not going.
00:24:06That's not a free lunch.
00:24:07See, things do change.
00:24:09Hurricane Hunter's leaving in 90 minutes.
00:24:11So?
00:24:11She's heading straight for that storm.
00:24:12I managed to procure two seats.
00:24:14I was hoping you might join me.
00:24:16You're going up, huh?
00:24:17No, I'm just going to the airport to watch her take off.
00:24:20Of course I'm going up.
00:24:21Pete, I've been going on these flights for eight years.
00:24:23It's part of my life now.
00:24:24But if this weather game's no longer yours, I understand.
00:24:31You have two seats, huh?
00:24:34On the aisle, very comfy.
00:24:36Peanuts?
00:24:37Organic.
00:24:38All right, then.
00:24:40Okay, weather recon 1244.
00:24:43Hurricane Hunter visibility is five miles.
00:24:45Wind is out of the northwest at five knots.
00:24:48No one on the runway, and you are clear to take off.
00:25:04It's a little different from your patrol car, no?
00:25:06Yeah, the wings gave it away.
00:25:08You know what I mean.
00:25:10Yeah, I know what you mean.
00:25:11It's pretty exciting.
00:25:12Just always imagine going up on one of these.
00:25:14Yeah, try not to imagine going down.
00:25:18We've only lost one hunter in 30 or so years of operation.
00:25:21Great track record, considering where we fly.
00:25:23It ain't exactly Albuquerque.
00:25:25What do you think all this equipment?
00:25:27It's very impressive.
00:25:28Nothing but state-of-the-art.
00:25:30You can track a sneeze from a monk in Shanghai.
00:25:33You come up with that analogy?
00:25:35Are there books on these things?
00:25:36No, that one's all me.
00:25:39It's gonna be a lot worse than a sneeze.
00:25:43So you're THE Pete Jensen.
00:25:48Yes, but I don't know what this clown over here told you, but don't believe a word of it.
00:25:52Don't worry, I already learned not to trust him.
00:25:54Guys, I'm right here.
00:25:57Bob was telling me that you used to chase with him back in the day.
00:26:01Bob used to chase with me back in the day.
00:26:04Did he have that beat-up old van back then?
00:26:05Hey!
00:26:06That van is a classic.
00:26:08We have an emotional tie, you know, old Ed and I.
00:26:10We've been through a lot together.
00:26:11A lot of transmissions.
00:26:14Bob was telling me about your IC theory.
00:26:16Oh, inter-clot lightning?
00:26:18There's a throwback, huh?
00:26:20What's the correlation?
00:26:21Well, the theory goes, before a twister forms, lightning flashes between clouds increase a hundred-fold.
00:26:28Does it work?
00:26:29It's always been difficult to test.
00:26:31Most inter-cloud lightning can only be seen from space, so until we quadruple the number of weather satellites,
00:26:36it's gonna be pretty hard to test the theory.
00:26:42Heads up, gentlemen. Weather systems moving north, northeast, and gaining speed.
00:26:57Currently in a cumulus stage, thunderheads are extending to about 25,000 feet.
00:27:02I'm seeing a very well-defined circulation in those clouds.
00:27:05What's the eyewall wind speed reading?
00:27:0870 to 75 miles an hour.
00:27:10We were reading 55 a few hours ago.
00:27:12It's gotta be the surface temp.
00:27:13Warm water from the Gulf will start to fuel her.
00:27:15Yeah, she's really growing fast. The spiral arms are starting to pick up as well.
00:27:19What are you thinking, Pete?
00:27:20That low pressure front from the north?
00:27:22Just sitting there.
00:27:23It's waiting.
00:27:26Kinda like ten years ago.
00:27:30Looks like we're gonna be in for a bit of a rough ride, guys.
00:27:33We better strap in.
00:27:45I'm glad we didn't have that much.
00:27:47Season through, huh?
00:27:49Listen to that hail.
00:27:50The size of golf balls.
00:27:52Bigger!
00:27:53This is weather recon flight 1244.
00:27:56Rico observation 977-324-169-220.
00:28:03We got another uptick in the wind speed.
00:28:05Now reading 80 miles an hour.
00:28:12What's the surface temp right now?
00:28:15Last reading was 83 degrees.
00:28:17This is not just a drop of the storm, folks.
00:28:20You ain't kidding.
00:28:26We got a sprawl line rising over 40,000 feet.
00:28:29Get ready to ride the wild pole, guys.
00:28:37I am now reading gusts in excess of 90 miles an hour.
00:28:41What's her direction?
00:28:42Still moving northeasterly at about 25 miles an hour.
00:28:45She's rolling fast.
00:28:47That low pressure cell's pulling her north.
00:28:49In case they keep building her wind speed floor in motion,
00:28:52she's gonna hit and laugh at the same force that Andrew did.
00:28:56Captain, the Doppler just finished mapping out the northern flank of the storm.
00:28:59We're ready to release our last drops in.
00:29:01Roger! Go on, drop them!
00:29:03Last drops in the way.
00:29:05Sorry to do this to you, old buddy.
00:29:07It's probably a lot safer down there.
00:29:09Out of this storm, it's landfall!
00:29:23Okay, folks.
00:29:24We'll be entering the I soon and then heading on home.
00:29:39Hey, where are you going?
00:29:41We need those data sheets.
00:29:43Stop!
00:30:01Keep going!
00:30:02Hang on!
00:30:05You're ready to get to a lower altitude for him!
00:30:27What happened back there?
00:30:30Captain, we took a lightning strike. It blew up an up-court door.
00:30:34Anyone hurt?
00:30:35No, sir.
00:30:37Nice catch. Thanks.
00:30:39You're welcome.
00:30:41Gee, that was fun.
00:30:43Yeah.
00:30:55You're quiet, Pete.
00:30:57What's on your mind?
00:30:59So what's the deal with you and souls?
00:31:02What do you mean?
00:31:04I don't know. You two just seem close.
00:31:06Close?
00:31:06Close. You know, like, interested?
00:31:10What are you talking about?
00:31:12Forget it. You don't want to talk about it? We won't talk about it.
00:31:17All right. We had a date.
00:31:19Yeah?
00:31:20Yeah. Five years ago.
00:31:22Oh! Must have gone well, huh?
00:31:23Hey, I still get invited on the flights, don't I?
00:31:26Yeah. By the way, that was incredible. I think that made my year, didn't it?
00:31:29I thought you'd enjoy that.
00:31:30Tell you what, Margaret's probably cooking up a storm right now, and I still owe you lunch, so why don't
00:31:34we make you dinner?
00:31:35Nah, I can't. I gotta get back to the office. Besides, I'll be letting you off cheap.
00:31:39You sure you don't want to come?
00:31:41Yeah, Lincoln's gonna need all the recon from the flight data. Don't just go up there for fun, you know.
00:31:46All right. Well, just do yourself a favor and keep an eye on that low pressure front.
00:31:49I know, I know. I have managed a few years without you. Long, boring, painful years.
00:32:01You and souls, huh?
00:32:20Hey. Sorry I'm late.
00:32:22What are you doing here?
00:32:24Your grandmother invited me for dinner.
00:32:26Here?
00:32:26Yeah. Where else?
00:32:27For tonight?
00:32:29Yeah.
00:32:29Well, there must be some kind of mistake. She never told me.
00:32:31I must have forgotten to tell you.
00:32:32Well, I can't stay.
00:32:33You could five minutes ago.
00:32:35I've gotta go.
00:32:36Listen, no, no. I don't have to stay. I'm not even hungry. Here, you ladies enjoy this, and I'll see
00:32:40you later.
00:32:40You're not going anywhere, and neither are you, young lady.
00:32:44I'm still your grandmother.
00:32:55It's been a long time since I had a home-cooked meal like this.
00:33:07This sure is fantastic wine.
00:33:12It really goes well with the chicken, doesn't it, Carol?
00:33:16I don't drink white.
00:33:20So what do you do at EDAC?
00:33:22Research.
00:33:24Oh, yeah? What kind?
00:33:27She tracks viruses and bacteria.
00:33:30Oh.
00:33:32From this region of the country. Isn't that right, Carol?
00:33:36That's right, Grandma.
00:33:39You working on anything excited?
00:33:41Yeah.
00:33:44You like what you're doing?
00:33:45Mm-hmm.
00:33:46Of course I do. I studied four years for this.
00:33:49Kara, have you told your father about John?
00:33:51Grandma.
00:33:53You haven't.
00:33:54Who's John? Boyfriend?
00:33:55He's a doctor at EDAC.
00:33:57Mm.
00:33:58He's assistant director of research.
00:34:00Very impressive.
00:34:02You guys been seeing each other or what?
00:34:04About a year.
00:34:07Sounds pretty serious.
00:34:09You know, long-distance relationships are hard to sustain.
00:34:13What are you gonna do when you move back to Portland?
00:34:14I'm not moving back.
00:34:16I accepted a staff position at the EDAC.
00:34:20Without discussing this with me?
00:34:23There's nothing to discuss.
00:34:24I thought it was a great opportunity, and I didn't want to pass it up.
00:34:29Kara, these are important decisions you're making.
00:34:31You should consult me.
00:34:32I wasn't consulted when we moved to Portland.
00:34:34You never considered how I felt.
00:34:36It was always about you and your inability to deal with Mom's death.
00:34:39Kara, you're talking to your father.
00:34:40I know who I'm talking to.
00:34:42We moved to Portland because it was the best thing for us to do at the time.
00:34:46No, it was the best thing for you, and not moving back to Portland is the best thing for me.
00:35:00Want some dessert?
00:35:03Yeah.
00:35:07News reporting has a career?
00:35:09Julia, I just don't know how you do it.
00:35:11No, seriously, what's wrong?
00:35:15It's just I keep thinking about what it must be like, you know?
00:35:18The final minutes being a victim.
00:35:20The wrath of God bearing down on you.
00:35:22Your life, your family, everything you own.
00:35:24And just, pfft, it's gone in an instant.
00:35:29See, Jerry?
00:35:30That is exactly why you are going to be a great journalist.
00:35:33Because, I mean, we could easily zip in and out totally unscathed by these stories.
00:35:38But you put yourself in those people's shoes.
00:35:41And you can't learn that.
00:35:44And that, Jules, is why we're headed to a major market within a year.
00:35:48That's right.
00:35:49Drink to that.
00:35:50Drink to that.
00:35:55That was good work out there today, Jerry.
00:35:58Is that a compliment?
00:36:00Oh, my.
00:36:01I think it was.
00:36:03So?
00:36:04It's on tap for tomorrow.
00:36:05I've been thinking about that.
00:36:07Okay, so we're covering a tornado story in the middle of Oklahoma.
00:36:11These people deal with this kind of thing all the time.
00:36:14It's like an everyday occurrence for them.
00:36:17Well, I've been doing some asking around myself.
00:36:19And it appears there's a guy named Bob Booker who's the authority on that.
00:36:23Now, not only is he a homegrown storm chaser, but he was also in the field when they hit.
00:36:32What?
00:36:34My little boy's all grown up.
00:36:37You shut up.
00:36:38No, no, I need a moment.
00:36:44No, really.
00:36:46That took initiative.
00:36:48It involved research.
00:36:49I'm impressed.
00:36:52So where are we gonna find this, Mr. Booker?
00:36:55Uh...
00:37:00His home address, his work address, and his cell phone number.
00:37:04Oh!
00:37:06Would you quit?
00:37:09What is wrong with you? Usually you laugh at my jokes.
00:37:13Usually they're funnier.
00:37:15Hey, I might look like I'm made out of rock, but when I get cut, I bleed, okay?
00:37:20Good.
00:37:24Good morning, sunshine, and scattered clouds.
00:37:27The possibility of showers by mid-afternoon, and into early evening as this cold front continues to press downward from
00:37:33Canada.
00:37:34And back to you at the desk.
00:37:36Are Troy County residents at risk of exposure to infectious disease?
00:37:40For more on this story, let's go to Julia Merrow, live from Tyler.
00:37:44Thank you, Jess.
00:37:45I'm standing in what used to be the parking lot of the Quail Springs Galleria.
00:37:49Ten years ago, it was destroyed, and the lives of 50 people were taken when the Tyler Twister struck.
00:37:55The plans to rebuild were scrapped when an economic downturn gave way to a new government contract and a new
00:38:01hope.
00:38:02That hope, however, came in the form of this Disease Control Center facility.
00:38:05This is where diseases are quarantined, analyzed, and tested, so questions remain.
00:38:12While the facility is a significant boost for Tyler's slow-growing economy, is it, in fact, safe for Tyler's future?
00:38:19Standing with me is the EDAC site director, Dr. Raymond Ardmore.
00:38:22Dr. Ardmore, I guess the real question would be, how wise was it to build this facility smack in the
00:38:28middle of Tornado Alley?
00:38:29Well, this building poses absolutely no threat of being compromised, even in the most violent of storms, and the public,
00:38:36Miss Merrow, can be 100% sure of that.
00:38:45I love it when you wear latex in the morning.
00:38:47You're late.
00:38:49Yeah, but I'm the boss. I'm allowed. It's in my contract.
00:38:55What are you diligently studying so early in the morning?
00:38:58Nothing.
00:38:59And she's testy.
00:39:01I'm sorry.
00:39:03That just come in?
00:39:04Yeah, the new strain of bacteria that killed the livestock in Garvin County.
00:39:07Well, be careful with that stuff.
00:39:09We got a big day tonight. I don't want to catch anything.
00:39:12But you.
00:39:16So, Ardmore's getting interviewed outside.
00:39:18Yeah, I saw it coming in.
00:39:20Sounds like the presser had his throat again.
00:39:21They are never gonna leave him alone about this place.
00:39:23Well, I think they might have a good reason.
00:39:25What are you talking about?
00:39:26Well, an electrical fire in the new building in Sussex killed three people.
00:39:29This building's contractor's being indicted for safety code violations there.
00:39:33Do you think this place is unsafe?
00:39:34Well, I hope not.
00:39:36You going to the vault?
00:39:38Yeah.
00:39:38Ardmore has a finance meeting with the oversight committee tomorrow afternoon.
00:39:41He wants an inventory of plasmodium samples.
00:39:43Can I come with you?
00:39:48No.
00:39:50Might be kind of sexy.
00:39:51The two of us alone down there in a room full of spores.
00:39:54Watching?
00:39:55Sounds tempting.
00:39:56But it's too dangerous.
00:39:58We might excite the spores.
00:40:00Okay, but it's your loss.
00:40:03Me and the spores.
00:40:09Casey's feeder bands are pumping some nasty stuff up there.
00:40:12This is very unstable.
00:40:14If that low pressure center over South Dakota drops any further, we could have a real disaster on our hands.
00:40:19Barometric pressure just dropped five millibars and the wind speeds up to 50 knots and climbing.
00:40:23Regional weather service?
00:40:25Yeah.
00:40:25This is Booker.
00:40:26Let me speak with Dave Lincoln, please.
00:40:27Okay.
00:40:28Hey, Link.
00:40:28It's me, Book.
00:40:29He's got another five millibar drop of the barometric pressure and the wind speeds are climbing.
00:40:34Yeah, I'm headed.
00:40:35Wanna go handheld or sticks?
00:40:36I don't care.
00:40:36Just hurry up.
00:40:38Hi.
00:40:42Hi, I'm Julia Mero from KPBG News.
00:40:44I was looking for Dr. Booker.
00:40:45Is that you?
00:40:46No, he's in the back.
00:40:49Thanks.
00:40:50Anytime.
00:40:52Excuse me, Dr. Booker?
00:40:54Hey.
00:40:54Hi, I'm doing a 10th anniversary piece on the Tyler Twisters.
00:40:57And I was just wondering if I could get your expert opinion.
00:40:59You gonna put this on the news?
00:41:01Well, yeah, that would be the plan if you don't mind.
00:41:04That would be great, but unfortunately, we're just about to go.
00:41:08Could you call the office?
00:41:09Um, we'll do lunch.
00:41:17We'll do lunch?
00:41:19Yeah, that's how media types talk.
00:41:29Well, you can always look into the story at Garvin County.
00:41:32Who?
00:41:32You know, the family lost all the livestock in that big storm a couple years ago.
00:41:35Cows, Jerry?
00:41:37Yeah, cows.
00:41:38What's wrong with that?
00:41:38It's a good story.
00:41:39Oh, right.
00:41:40As soon as I think you're having a breakthrough, you bring me cows.
00:41:44Well, they're big in India.
00:41:45Oh, that's funny, Jerry.
00:41:46That's funny, especially since we're in Oklahoma.
00:41:49Now, come on.
00:41:50Let's go see where they're going.
00:41:53Jules, what kind of trouble are we gonna get us into now?
00:41:55Oh, as much as humanly possible, Jer.
00:41:58Let's go.
00:42:00And Tyler Weather Center is putting out a severe weather watch for Tyler County with strong possibility of gale forest
00:42:07winds and hail is likely in this area this afternoon.
00:42:11Updated weather every half hour.
00:42:13Call the office.
00:42:14We'll do lunch.
00:42:15Which reminds me.
00:42:16You owe me a lunch.
00:42:18I knew you wouldn't forget about that.
00:42:19I have a memory like a goat.
00:42:21You mean an elephant.
00:42:22What?
00:42:24This isn't right.
00:42:25We're heading the wrong direction.
00:42:28Stormfront's over there.
00:42:29Yeah, but see the way the mid-level ones are pushing the anvil cloud?
00:42:33Hmm.
00:42:34You sure?
00:42:36I know my clouds.
00:42:38I've got a memory like a goat.
00:42:41You need to head east and get on the other side of that squaw line.
00:42:53What's the readout say?
00:42:56Still showing denser cell activity further to the east.
00:43:03The squaw line's gotta be 40,000 feet.
00:43:09The strike was cloud to cloud.
00:43:10Tell me you don't miss this.
00:43:12Should we call it in?
00:43:15I don't know.
00:43:16Not yet.
00:43:17The more time we give those people, the better their chances.
00:43:20I'm probably wrong.
00:43:22That's a load of bull and you know it.
00:43:25Pete, what happened 10 years ago was a terrible fluke.
00:43:29It was not your fault, okay?
00:43:32We should make that call.
00:43:42Yeah.
00:43:43I see you right here.
00:43:44Link.
00:43:45Book is on three.
00:43:46All through here.
00:43:48I'm here.
00:43:48I can't look inside.
00:43:50Uh, I'm not sure if there's something new that just came in on the front.
00:43:54Hey, Book.
00:43:55What's up?
00:43:56Heavy cell activity approximately 60 miles northeast of Hughes County.
00:44:00Rain curtain about six to eight miles long with some serious downdrafts.
00:44:03North of Hughes County.
00:44:05North east.
00:44:06Uh, we don't show any storm activity in that area.
00:44:10Just some dense clouds.
00:44:11Have you checked your Doppler?
00:44:12I didn't use radar.
00:44:13I got Pete Jensen next to me.
00:44:14Pete Jensen.
00:44:16What's he doing here?
00:44:18Taking a ride down memory lane.
00:44:19Now how about that warning?
00:44:20I can't order a warning until we have confirmed touchdown.
00:44:22You know that.
00:44:24I'll have to talk to Chaser.
00:44:26Yeah, you do that.
00:44:28He needs to talk to Chaser.
00:44:30We got our answer.
00:44:32Since Link's got that promotion, he's lost his nerve.
00:44:45We will find him.
00:44:46Just head for that storm frame right there.
00:44:49Where?
00:44:49Right.
00:44:50Right here.
00:45:05Let's get the Doppler up and running.
00:45:07It's gonna be go time.
00:45:20All set here.
00:45:21Near the size of that wall cloud.
00:45:23Gotta be 20 miles wide.
00:45:26Set it this way.
00:45:30Doppler showing strong wind rotation.
00:45:32Any hook echoes?
00:45:33Not yet.
00:45:35Pete, you better look at this.
00:45:44Let's crush your readings.
00:45:47Drop it fast.
00:45:49There's our hook echo.
00:46:05Let's crush your readings.
00:46:07Pressure's dropping fast.
00:46:09Straight light winds gotta be up to 40 miles per hour.
00:46:11Storm's moving east.
00:46:13It's building fast.
00:46:15There they are.
00:46:17Hey, we got company.
00:46:19That's all we need.
00:46:26Hey.
00:46:27That's not such a good idea.
00:46:28What are you doing here?
00:46:29Same thing as you.
00:46:30I don't think so.
00:46:30Get that antenna down before you get us all peeled.
00:46:32Oh, we can't.
00:46:32We got a live feed in three minutes.
00:46:34Hey, look at that!
00:46:40What a cloud!
00:46:43She's down.
00:46:44There's the debris cloud.
00:46:49Why she?
00:46:50Why not me?
00:46:51Do you really have gas?
00:46:55You better get back in your van and get out of here now!
00:46:58I'll alert the weather station.
00:47:03Start the build!
00:47:05Oh, no!
00:47:05Oh, no!
00:47:06Yeah, this one's enormous.
00:47:08Can't get a signal.
00:47:09We got about a two minute window.
00:47:10We're not getting more than anyone.
00:47:12Get out of here!
00:47:12Get in your van and go!
00:47:15Oh, check that out.
00:47:17Get out of here now!
00:47:18Go!
00:47:24Hey!
00:47:25Hey!
00:47:26What happened?
00:47:26Lightning strike.
00:47:33She's breathing.
00:47:34He is too.
00:47:35Come on, buddy.
00:47:35Get up.
00:47:39Go get the van started.
00:47:40Get Julia there now!
00:47:43What happened?
00:47:44Lightning hit the van.
00:47:44Well, where's Jerry?
00:47:45Pete's got him.
00:47:46Jerry!
00:47:48Who is he?
00:47:50He's breathing, but he's unconscious.
00:47:52We're out of time.
00:47:53That thing's less than two miles away.
00:47:54Let's go!
00:47:55Yeah, but we gotta get him to the hospital.
00:47:58Let's go!
00:47:59Let's go!
00:48:06Come on!
00:48:07East!
00:48:14Come on, buddy!
00:48:16Get in!
00:48:16Let's go!
00:48:30It's gaining on us.
00:48:37There's no way we're gonna outrun it!
00:48:39See that overpass?
00:48:40Yeah.
00:48:42We're going under it.
00:48:44No, not a good idea.
00:48:45He's not safe.
00:48:46If you caught out in the open during a twister,
00:48:48any cover's better than none.
00:48:57Go on up there!
00:48:58Why would we do that?
00:48:59Do you ever stop asking questions?
00:49:01Well, if I did, I wouldn't have a dog!
00:49:03No!
00:49:28Go on up there!
00:49:54Look out..
00:50:00I don't care what that reporter believes.
00:50:03There is nothing wrong with the structure of this building.
00:50:05Carter pulled this structural engineering report.
00:50:07This site's not built to code.
00:50:08Well, so the roof's a little high,
00:50:10or there's an electrical outlet a millimeter too close to a water pipe.
00:50:13Who really cares?
00:50:14I do.
00:50:15You should, too.
00:50:16Look, this is a ridiculous charge brought on by a bunch of tree huggers
00:50:19who want their vaccines and their prescription drugs
00:50:21just as long as they're not tested in their own backyard.
00:50:23I think that's a little harsh, Raymond.
00:50:25I'm not disputing the need for the Senate,
00:50:26but what if we pose a threat to the community?
00:50:31I'm not going to bury my head in the sand on this.
00:50:33This is a serious issue.
00:50:34No.
00:50:36This is nonsense, and you are overreacting.
00:50:39Overreacting?
00:50:39This building's compromised.
00:50:41The infectious diseases that could be released will have a devastating effect.
00:50:44This facility is important to Tyler.
00:50:46It's good for its economy, and it's good for its future.
00:50:49And even if this building isn't 100%, the vault certainly is.
00:50:52Do you hear yourself? Do you know what you sound like?
00:50:54Do you know what our senator sounds like?
00:50:57No, of course you don't. You haven't been here long enough.
00:51:00So let me tell you, if he even thinks that this could jeopardize his re-election,
00:51:04he will shut this place down, put us all out of work, and that includes you.
00:51:07How about killing half the county? How's that going to affect his re-election?
00:51:10I'm not going to have you start an all-out panic over nothing.
00:51:13I don't need people picketing on our doorstep,
00:51:15and I certainly don't want to see any more news cameras around here.
00:51:17Is that understood?
00:51:18It's the right thing to do, regardless of the consequences.
00:51:20Do you want to talk consequences?
00:51:22Then think about this.
00:51:23When nothing happens, nothing, and this building is still destroyed,
00:51:27not because of some storm or some code violations,
00:51:30but because of lack of funding.
00:51:32When hundreds of people lose their jobs,
00:51:34and this entire town is in the throes of depression,
00:51:36and why?
00:51:37Because somebody overreacted.
00:51:39You're going to pat yourself on the back then, Dr. Tedesco, hmm?
00:51:42Personally, I couldn't live with myself.
00:51:44Now, I have a very important meeting with the grant board tomorrow afternoon,
00:51:47so I prefer to hear nothing more about this.
00:51:49Is that understood?
00:51:52Nothing is going to stop this facility getting the funding it needs.
00:51:55Not some out-of-date report, and certainly not a bit of bad weather.
00:52:05You know, the storm's only going to intensify.
00:52:07I know.
00:52:09How long are you thinking?
00:52:1072 hours, maybe less.
00:52:12That's what I was afraid of.
00:52:16It's been real good having you back here.
00:52:19Yeah, I'd be lying if I didn't say I missed it.
00:52:22So what are you doing, Pete?
00:52:23I mean, do you really love it in Portland?
00:52:25I don't know.
00:52:27Because I've got to tell you,
00:52:28some people are just meant to be doing certain things.
00:52:30You know, it's in their constitutional makeup,
00:52:32and you belong here doing this.
00:52:36Too bad professional baseball wasn't in my makeup.
00:52:41Now, why am I taking you back to that hospital?
00:52:43I just want to check on those two reporters, make sure they're okay.
00:52:46You want to check on Julia Merrill, make sure she's doing okay.
00:52:49Don't be absurd.
00:52:50No, it's good, Pete.
00:52:51I saw how you were looking at it.
00:52:53You two seem close.
00:52:55Close?
00:52:55Yeah, close.
00:52:58Interested.
00:53:00Get up with me.
00:53:10Excuse me.
00:53:11Where's the bathroom?
00:53:16Hey.
00:53:18You're here.
00:53:19Yeah, how's your cameraman doing?
00:53:21Jerry.
00:53:21Yeah, Jerry.
00:53:22He has some first-degree burns.
00:53:24Minor cuts and bruises.
00:53:26Could have been worse.
00:53:28Yeah.
00:53:29Could have been a lot worse.
00:53:30Yeah.
00:53:32It was really stupid of us.
00:53:35I put your life and his life in danger,
00:53:37and I'm just so sorry.
00:53:40Gotta go where the story goes.
00:53:41Nature of your business, right?
00:53:44Yeah, it doesn't make it any less stupid.
00:53:48I'm trying to throw you a rope here,
00:53:49and you just keep grabbing the anchor.
00:53:56You hungry?
00:53:59Always.
00:54:03Well, I've been in it for two years.
00:54:05I'm trying to make it into a major market,
00:54:07but it's not easy.
00:54:09There's so many people trying to get into this business.
00:54:12It's crazy.
00:54:13I can imagine.
00:54:18What?
00:54:19I did a little research.
00:54:22Yeah?
00:54:26So, why'd you become a cop?
00:54:27Because the way I hear it,
00:54:29you were like Mr. Tornado Authority around here.
00:54:33Things change.
00:54:35Kind of a big change, don't you think?
00:54:38I lost my wife in a tornado.
00:54:41I know.
00:54:43I'm sorry.
00:54:46I was out chasing a nasty storm front.
00:54:49I just didn't see it coming.
00:54:51What, the tornado?
00:54:52Tornadoes are unpredictable.
00:54:55Oh, you can't blame yourself for that.
00:54:57Oh, I do blame myself.
00:55:00Instead of going home and taking care of my wife and my daughter,
00:55:02I was out in the field.
00:55:05You see, back then,
00:55:06I believed in my arrogance
00:55:07that there was a rhyme and a reason to all this,
00:55:09that there was some type of behavioral pattern
00:55:11that I could decipher,
00:55:13and...
00:55:14I don't just make these storms predictable.
00:55:17But I didn't think that Stormwood Hedworth did.
00:55:21So you don't believe that there's a decipherable pattern anymore?
00:55:25No.
00:55:26And it doesn't matter because I'm not in the weather business anymore.
00:55:29Ah, and that's why you were in the field today.
00:55:34Well...
00:55:36So do you find being a cop rewarding?
00:55:39A detective.
00:55:41Well, let's just say that after, um...
00:55:44Mary died,
00:55:45I decided to devote my life to goals
00:55:46that were just a little bit more obtainable.
00:55:48Ah, but just as dangerous.
00:55:50Yeah, I suppose.
00:55:53You ever been shot?
00:55:57Yeah.
00:55:58Really?
00:55:59Where?
00:56:02This is kind of personal, actually.
00:56:04Oh, come on, you can tell me.
00:56:09In the, um...
00:56:12In the gluteus, Maximus.
00:56:15Oh, come on.
00:56:17You want to see?
00:56:19Not here.
00:56:20So you do want to see, though?
00:56:22Oh.
00:56:24Gosh.
00:56:27Oh, no.
00:56:41You ever get any decent food out of this fridge?
00:56:43Uh, decent?
00:56:44No.
00:56:45You know, chips, salsa.
00:56:46Sometimes a stale muffin.
00:56:47Stay away from the donuts, man.
00:56:49What's wrong with the donuts?
00:56:50It just ain't right.
00:56:51Well, I like the donuts, okay?
00:56:53Now focus.
00:56:55Six o'clock printout.
00:56:56Yeah, just came in.
00:56:58Oh, boy.
00:57:00Jensen was right.
00:57:01Casey didn't track east.
00:57:03She's coming here.
00:57:07It's gonna be one heck of a morning.
00:57:19Hello?
00:57:20Pete, you up?
00:57:21Yeah, yeah.
00:57:22What's up?
00:57:23It's Casey.
00:57:24She's taking a northern track up through central Texas.
00:57:26Did you call Lincoln about this?
00:57:28He's the one who told me.
00:57:30I'm, uh, I'm picking you up.
00:57:31Should be there in 20 minutes.
00:57:33Hey, listen.
00:57:34Meet me outside of Rosa's.
00:57:35I'll pick us up a couple of coffees, all right?
00:57:37Make it a large, okay, buddy?
00:57:39Yeah.
00:57:40None of that cream and sugar, either.
00:57:42You got me?
00:57:43Don't worry.
00:57:44I'll see you soon.
00:57:44Bye.
00:57:49Sorry.
00:57:50I didn't mean to wake you up.
00:57:50Oh, it's okay.
00:57:52What are you doing?
00:57:54I was just watching the clouds.
00:57:57Oh.
00:57:58So if my six-year-old nephew said that, it would be okay.
00:58:01But you saying that, it brings on a whole new meaning.
00:58:07That was Booker.
00:58:09He said he's gonna be here in 20 minutes to pick me up.
00:58:12Well, then that means we have 10.
00:58:14Mm-hmm.
00:58:19Ow!
00:58:21My gunshot wound.
00:58:24But, Nicholas, take a look at this.
00:58:28Yes, and?
00:58:30I just thought you should see it.
00:58:32So Casey's headed north.
00:58:33What do the computer projections say?
00:58:35Holding to their original forecast.
00:58:40Then why are we having this conversation?
00:58:42This is exactly what Jensen predicted.
00:58:46Where's the cold from?
00:58:47South Central Wyoming.
00:58:48Parts of Western Nebraska.
00:58:49Southern Iowa.
00:58:50When was the last time it moved?
00:58:51It's been stationary for a while.
00:58:55If Jensen's right about this, and these two systems collide,
00:58:58it could be a major disaster.
00:58:59Jensen has been out of the weather business for more than 10 years now.
00:59:02He doesn't know what he's talking about.
00:59:05I think he's right about this.
00:59:06Just give me a break.
00:59:07Will you take a look around?
00:59:08We are surrounded by the most intricate and sensitive weather monitoring equipment that money can buy.
00:59:13If any of it tells us that we have to be concerned, then we will be concerned.
00:59:17Don't you think that's a bit more reasonable than gut hunches?
00:59:19You know, just...
00:59:35Good morning.
00:59:36Thank you, dude.
00:59:38What's this?
00:59:40Silicon emailed those before I left.
00:59:45I knew it.
00:59:46Yeah, you were right.
00:59:47Casey's pulling that cold front straight down.
00:59:50Lincoln's saying he's going to issue a watch?
00:59:52They have no problem issuing watches, you know that.
00:59:54It's the warnings that Jason has such a hard time with.
01:00:00What's the matter with you?
01:00:03You smell of perfume.
01:00:06That's probably my deodorant.
01:00:09What about the marks all over your neck?
01:00:10Is that the deodorant, too?
01:00:12These are nothing. These are mosquito bites.
01:00:13An hotel's a dump.
01:00:15It's like a swamp in there.
01:00:19I believe there's one of those mosquitoes right now.
01:00:23And it's heading our way.
01:00:24What should we do?
01:00:27Hi.
01:00:28Hey.
01:00:28I'm coming with you.
01:00:34Julia, if these indications are correct,
01:00:36it's not going to be pretty out there, honey.
01:00:38It's what I live for. It's my job.
01:00:41I didn't get you any coffee.
01:00:42Oh, that's okay. I'll have yours.
01:00:45Morning.
01:00:48Where are we headed?
01:00:54Let's stop at Margaret's, then we'll head south.
01:00:56Room 278.
01:01:04This is not good.
01:01:06It's not good at all.
01:01:09So, have you given it any more thought?
01:01:11To what?
01:01:12Moving back.
01:01:14It's your father, Kara.
01:01:16Well, I'm not moving back.
01:01:18I couldn't get out of that depressing little apartment soon enough.
01:01:20Honey, I'm not going to be around forever.
01:01:24And when I'm gone, your father is the only family that you've got.
01:01:27And you're going to need him, and he's going to need you.
01:01:30I don't need him.
01:01:31Kara, you've got to resolve things with your father.
01:01:34Margaret!
01:01:37Margaret!
01:01:37I'm here.
01:01:39Good. I'm glad you're still here.
01:01:40Why? What is it?
01:01:41Hurricane Casey's backtracked.
01:01:42She said it this way.
01:01:43Hurricanes don't make it up here.
01:01:44By the time it does, it'll be some wind and rain.
01:01:46It's no big deal.
01:01:47It's not the hurricane that I'm worried about.
01:01:48It's the weather it'll generate.
01:01:50I don't want you going to work today.
01:01:51Are you kidding me?
01:01:52I have to go.
01:01:53Dr. Ardmore has an important meeting before the ground board this afternoon,
01:01:56and I still haven't prepared for it.
01:01:58Kara, this is a serious situation.
01:01:59I want you to stay here today.
01:02:01What? Are you grounding me?
01:02:02No, I'm not grounding me.
01:02:02You know what?
01:02:03If I hear an alert, then I'll come home.
01:02:05Now, if you'll please excuse me, I'm going to be late.
01:02:07See you later, girl.
01:02:13The squall line's already defined over there,
01:02:15and the winds are picking up out of the southeast.
01:02:17Is that how it starts?
01:02:18Starting all right, and it's going to get a lot worse before it's over.
01:02:21Stop right up here.
01:02:22I'm going to fire up the Doppler book.
01:02:24You grab the portable.
01:02:26You're right in my mind.
01:02:34That's one of the largest supercells I've ever seen.
01:02:40I'd guess the anvil clouds top off at around 40,000 feet.
01:02:43Is that about right?
01:02:43Unbelievable.
01:02:44There were no signs of it forming an hour ago.
01:02:46The squall line is massive.
01:02:47That's got to be several miles across.
01:02:49It's moving fast.
01:02:51Where's the cold front at?
01:02:52Still stationary.
01:02:57No, it's not.
01:02:59I'm being pulled down.
01:03:01Is that bad?
01:03:03Very.
01:03:07My computer isn't reading it.
01:03:10You thinking what I'm thinking?
01:03:14Yep.
01:03:20Dr. Ardmore?
01:03:22Yes?
01:03:22Mr. Chasin from the Weather Bureau is on line three.
01:03:28Nicholas, how can I help you?
01:03:30Raymond, I just wanted you to be aware there's a chance of some pretty serious weather headed
01:03:34your way.
01:03:35Oh, yes.
01:03:35When?
01:03:36By early this afternoon.
01:03:37The latest, possibly sooner.
01:03:39I know you have an important meeting, so I won't order an evac unless absolutely necessary.
01:03:44Well, that would be useful.
01:03:45I appreciate it.
01:03:46May I ask why the sudden interest?
01:03:50I was hoping you might have a conversation with the senator about that opening in Washington.
01:03:56Of course.
01:03:57One good turn deserves another, right?
01:04:00Right.
01:04:01Thanks, Raymond.
01:04:02All right.
01:04:03Talk to you later.
01:04:03Bye.
01:04:03Bye.
01:04:06Strange fellow.
01:04:08Come on, guys.
01:04:12Now, this is our main office where our brilliant scientists and technicians write down their
01:04:16reports on research that they do in the laboratory.
01:04:21Yes?
01:04:22We do research and write essays, too.
01:04:24We did this little experiment where we put a carpenter's nail inside a bottle of soda pop.
01:04:29After several days, the nail began to dissolve.
01:04:31So you guys learned to avoid drinking too much soda pop, right?
01:04:34Uh-huh.
01:04:34Mm-hmm.
01:04:35Our scientists experiment and study samples of bacteria, which was a fancy term for germs.
01:04:41And we study microscopic organisms, which is another fancy term for teeny-weeny living things.
01:04:46Is she a scientist?
01:04:48Well, yes, in fact.
01:04:49That's Kara Jensen.
01:04:50She's one of our best scientists.
01:04:53Okay, kids.
01:04:55Who wants to go see something really gross?
01:05:00Come on.
01:05:08Strong updrafts.
01:05:09Well-defined wall cloud.
01:05:11Yeah, but we're on the wrong side of the storm to get any accurate readings.
01:05:14The rain currents are between us and the wall cloud.
01:05:16What does that mean?
01:05:25I mean, you're about to see the finger of God.
01:05:29Which finger?
01:05:30Guess.
01:05:31I mean, look at that.
01:05:33Here she comes.
01:05:44Touchdown.
01:05:45Six points.
01:05:46Time?
01:05:47Confirm funnel cloud at 1240 p.m.
01:05:49It's actually quite beautiful.
01:05:51Where's she headed?
01:05:53You guys are Tyler County.
01:05:54I wouldn't want to be in either one.
01:05:56I've got to get out of here.
01:05:59Come on.
01:06:01Let's call it in.
01:06:19Let's call it in.
01:06:21Link, come here.
01:06:26Look at this.
01:06:28The storms are forming rapidly along the northern end of this dry line.
01:06:35Lincoln.
01:06:36Link, we have a confirmed funnel about 30 miles outside of Tyler.
01:06:41It appears to be heading your way.
01:06:42I suggest you issue a warning.
01:06:45Stay on the line, Pete.
01:06:48We need to find out what's happening out there.
01:06:50Okay.
01:06:50We've got pretty good circulation going about 60 miles south of Tyler.
01:06:54Jensen looks point on.
01:06:56Get me a visual.
01:06:57Something I can show chasing.
01:07:00Pete, I've got to call you back.
01:07:03Look, let's just issue a warning for Hughes and Tyler County.
01:07:06Okay?
01:07:08Are we sure about this?
01:07:10I am.
01:07:15Where are you sending that warning?
01:07:17Hughes and Tyler County.
01:07:19We have confirmation of a tornado touchdown 30 miles due south.
01:07:2230 miles south?
01:07:28That's not even in this county.
01:07:30It'll never last long enough to get here.
01:07:32Look, I don't want any warnings until we have a viable threat.
01:07:35Understood?
01:07:38Yeah.
01:07:39We're not going to cry wolf.
01:07:49Dr. O'Connor.
01:07:50Dr. O'Connor.
01:07:53Morning.
01:07:53Morning.
01:07:54How are you?
01:07:54Glad you could make it.
01:07:56Let's get inside out of this wind.
01:07:58It's getting windy.
01:08:00There you go.
01:08:01Just follow me inside.
01:08:05And this way, please. Follow me.
01:08:13Well, this, of course, is our main lab,
01:08:14where our staff of biologists and scientists examine, classify,
01:08:18and report on hundreds of bacterial and viral strains every year.
01:08:22Now, if you'd like to follow me to the conference room,
01:08:24we have a presentation set up, please. This way.
01:08:32.
01:08:38Kara, it's me. Yes, Dad.
01:08:40Tell me about the clouds. What are they doing?
01:08:42What?
01:08:43Look at the clouds. What are they doing?
01:08:49They are really moving. Swirling. It's pretty intense.
01:08:52Did the alarms go off? No.
01:08:55All right, Kara, you need to get out of there.
01:08:57Listen to me, there's a tornado coming.
01:08:59I'm on my way. Evacuate the building now.
01:09:01I'll take care of it.
01:09:09Come on, Margaret.
01:09:15She's not answering. If I know Chasen,
01:09:18he's not going to issue a warning to the twister's on top of his head.
01:09:21I could do it. I just, I need to get on the air.
01:09:26We've got three different kinds of soup.
01:09:28We've got tuna fish sandwiches, salmon sandwiches.
01:09:30I think we even have bologna sandwiches.
01:09:32John.
01:09:33John, I need to talk to you.
01:09:35Can you give me one second, please?
01:09:38What's up?
01:09:40We need to get the kids out of here.
01:09:41What do you mean?
01:09:42There's going to be a...
01:09:44Tyler's going to get hit with a twister. A big one.
01:09:46What? You're kidding.
01:09:47We don't have much time.
01:09:48If you want me to warn the others...
01:09:54Kids, unfortunately, the field trip is over.
01:09:55We'll do another one really soon, okay? I promise.
01:09:57I'll make it up to you.
01:09:58Follow me. We've got to get you to a shop.
01:10:04Let's go. Let's go.
01:10:06Wouldn't it be safer if we kept the kids here?
01:10:08God's safer. Trust me.
01:10:10I heard your conversation with our boys.
01:10:12The tornado comes through here, and this building is compromised.
01:10:16Field trip's over.
01:10:17We'll get the kids in their seats.
01:10:19Come on, kids.
01:10:22Hurry up.
01:10:24Tell the driver to take Super Ken to go to the shelter on Milner Avenue.
01:10:27That's the closest one.
01:10:28Come on.
01:10:29Hurry up.
01:10:34Yes, Martin, I realize I don't have a camera or a live mic,
01:10:37but I need to get on the air right now
01:10:39because a tornado is going to hit Tyler any minute.
01:10:43Martin?
01:10:44Hello?
01:10:45Oh, my phone is cutting out.
01:10:47Hello, Martin?
01:10:48Yes, yes, yes, I'm still here.
01:10:50No, I said any minute.
01:10:53Tornado's coming.
01:10:55Come on. Let's move now.
01:10:56Let's go.
01:10:57Get out. We've got to clear out.
01:10:59Anybody in here, let's go.
01:11:00Go, tornado's coming.
01:11:02Go, go, go, go.
01:11:04Come on.
01:11:05Hurry.
01:11:06We've received numerous phone calls about the sightings
01:11:09in the outskirts of Tyler.
01:11:10However, no warning has been issued by the weather department.
01:11:14All Tyler residents need to be warned
01:11:16there is a twister down.
01:11:18A repeat, a tornado has touched down
01:11:20and is heading towards Tyler.
01:11:22Hold on.
01:11:22Cut left. Now.
01:11:32I should've warned him.
01:11:36This could be our jobs.
01:11:37Do it.
01:11:45Orbital velocities close to 300 miles an hour.
01:11:48Funnel's about a tenth of a mile wide.
01:11:50It's gotta be traveling close to 60 miles an hour.
01:11:53Fourteen minutes since touchdown.
01:11:55We're still going strong.
01:11:56Coming in right behind us.
01:11:57Go, go, go.
01:11:58Can this thing go any faster?
01:12:00Step on it.
01:12:01Let's head in for you now.
01:12:02We've gotta get over here.
01:12:03And so based on these figures,
01:12:04I think we can safely assume that the next three fiscal years will be-
01:12:07Tornado's coming. We need to get to safety.
01:12:10We need to move now.
01:12:12Yes, well I'm sure we'll all be safe enough inside here,
01:12:14but thank you for your concern.
01:12:15This building could go.
01:12:17This storm could release thousands of infectious biological strains.
01:12:20Surely you realize potentially devastating consequences to this area.
01:12:24Look, I assure you this building is one of the safest in the area.
01:12:27There's no cause for alarm, really.
01:12:28Sorry, the sales pitch is over, Doctor.
01:12:30This place isn't built to code and you know it.
01:12:32I don't care if you have a death witch, but why don't we spare the others?
01:12:35I suggest that you leave the building.
01:12:37Now!
01:12:40You better be right.
01:12:47The vault.
01:12:49Oh my gosh.
01:12:50I gotta put the samples in the vault.
01:12:52Well, you can't do it on your own.
01:12:56It's still coming!
01:12:57Heading right for us!
01:12:59Don't worry, we're gonna make it.
01:13:06I can't get Kara on herself.
01:13:08Maybe she's already left.
01:13:20We'll get it.
01:13:29Hang on.
01:13:30Let's go!
01:13:33Grab those.
01:13:42Wait!
01:13:43Wait, wait!
01:13:43It's too dangerous, we need to get out of here!
01:13:45That's a long round!
01:14:03Don't stop! Just go through it! Go through it!
01:14:05Hey!
01:14:08Good! She's still here!
01:14:09Pete, you're not going out there!
01:14:10I gotta go get her! I'll be right back!
01:14:12Are you nuts? I'm coming with you!
01:14:13Pete, you're wasting time! Come on!
01:14:15Three minutes! You get out of here!
01:14:44Ah!
01:14:46Ah!
01:14:58Okay!
01:14:59Okay!
01:15:00Okay!
01:15:01Okay!
01:15:01We can run these tools!
01:15:03We need to make a newペtes!
01:15:03All right!
01:15:09Let's go!
01:15:10Okay!
01:15:14Let's go!
01:15:15Oh, my God.
01:15:46Get out!
01:15:52This is John.
01:15:54Yes?
01:15:56Oh, my gosh.
01:15:58The schoolteacher just called little Samantha, didn't get on the school bus.
01:16:03If you look for Samantha, I'll take the samples of the ball.
01:16:10Hey, hey, hey!
01:16:11I'm looking for Carrie Johnson.
01:16:12Hey, hey!
01:16:12You know who she is?
01:16:13This little girl that's last summer in the building.
01:16:14She went to find her.
01:16:15What are you doing?
01:16:16You've got to get out of here.
01:16:16There's a tornado coming.
01:16:17You've got to get these down to the vault.
01:16:19Carrie went that way.
01:16:20I'll catch up to you.
01:16:21All right.
01:16:27Samantha!
01:16:30Samantha!
01:16:34Samantha!
01:16:41Samantha!
01:16:44Samantha!
01:16:45Samantha!
01:16:46Samantha!
01:16:47Samantha!
01:16:47I'm here!
01:16:48I'm in here!
01:16:51Samantha!
01:16:53You left me.
01:16:55No one left you, honey.
01:16:56I'm here.
01:16:57I'm scared.
01:16:58It's going to be okay.
01:16:59Come with me.
01:16:59Okay, sweetie?
01:17:01Yes.
01:17:04Carol!
01:17:05I think I got a right.
01:17:05Come on.
01:17:08Oh, no.
01:17:09I'm here.
01:17:15Take off.
01:17:16I've got to go find Pete.
01:17:17No, we have to wait here.
01:17:18There's nothing you can do in there right now.
01:17:20No, no, no.
01:17:40Come on.
01:17:44Let's get out of here.
01:17:56Let's get to a convert or some kind of tunnel.
01:17:58It was run about a half mile down from the main entrance.
01:18:18Will the vault hold?
01:18:20It's better.
01:18:49Let's go.
01:19:15Let's get me.
01:19:16Go, go, go.
01:19:17Go, go, go.
01:19:30All right, hang out real tight, everybody.
01:19:33Hang on.
01:20:12Are you okay?
01:20:15I want to go home.
01:20:16Come here, baby.
01:20:17It's okay.
01:20:24It's okay.
01:20:29Come here, baby.
01:20:45The whole block looks untouched.
01:20:46I bet she's okay.
01:20:48Grandma!
01:20:49Oh, Grandma!
01:20:53Oh, I was so worried about you two.
01:20:56Thank goodness you're okay.
01:20:59I haven't seen those two smiles together
01:21:01in a long, long time.
01:21:04Come on in.
01:21:07Almost ten years to the day,
01:21:09on the anniversary of the worst twister outbreak
01:21:11in U.S. history,
01:21:13disaster has once again struck America's heartland,
01:21:16the worst of which absolutely demolished the EDAC labs
01:21:19by winds that topped 200 miles an hour,
01:21:22reaching an F5 on the Fujita scale.
01:21:25What makes this disaster different from years ago
01:21:27is that, amazingly, no lives were lost.
01:21:30At the center of nature's wrath
01:21:32is a story of the courage and bravery
01:21:34of a few people who risked life and limb
01:21:36to make sure that the EDAC's deadly stores
01:21:38of lethal microbes were sealed safely away
01:21:40in an underground vault.
01:21:43Oh, no.
01:21:53Hi.
01:21:58Dad, I just wanted to tell you how it was...
01:22:01You don't have to say anything, honey.
01:22:02Sorry.
01:22:03I'm so sorry about everything.
01:22:06Me too, kiddo.
01:22:07Me too.
01:22:09You know, I've been thinking about Portland.
01:22:12No, if this is about me moving back, I...
01:22:14No, no, no.
01:22:16It's about me moving back here.
01:22:18What do you mean?
01:22:21I think I've been gone from home long enough,
01:22:22don't you?
01:22:23Are you serious?
01:22:25Yep.
01:22:26No, no, no.
01:22:28No, no.
