01:38In the untamed and historically gold-rich foothills of the Oahu Mountains.
01:45Freddie and Juan get an urgent SOS from rookie miner, Bret Allen, who has staked his livelihood on his first
01:54plane.
01:55this one's definitely different they had an auto body business that they had hard times with
02:01he's taking what he's got left and throwing it into this gold mine
02:04but he's quite a greenhorn he doesn't really know the gold industry well
02:09really this is kind of a rescue where not only is it a rescue but we're kind of starting from
02:14ground zero yeah this is a great opportunity to help somebody right at the beginning of their
02:20gold mining career how we doing we hope we're at the right mine i'm assuming we are how you doing
02:27how's it going welcome to the allen mine juan hey how was your travels we weren't getting our trucks
02:33in here that's for darn sure how long have you been mining in here exactly last year we came in
02:38did some testing up in here with some smaller equipment and we just got running about three
02:44weeks ago so who do you have for crude i got my wife michelle and then i got my son

02:49and then i got daughter chelsea coming up here in the next couple of days
02:56when i was uh eight nine years old my dad bought a claim about six or seven miles from here
03:04the first time i ever saw the gold show up in the pan i was addicted man it's an addiction
03:10that you
03:10never forget when we were kids it was really a great experience
03:16as i got older i saw my dad getting really addicted to the gold growing up there's some
03:23bittersweet moments between brett's dad and him seeing it starting to take the money away from the
03:30family watching a constant feud between my mother and father over gold brett's dad mined these mountains
03:40in the 80s but never made it rich i said i'm done with this and didn't want to be a
03:48part of it anymore
03:49so i started the auto body business with my wife michelle back in 2004 brett ran the auto body business
03:57for 20 years until it fell on hard times bringing back thoughts of gold so the business back home it

04:06kept draining us dry i knew i needed to move on to something different and i thought going back
04:12to work for somebody else didn't settle good with me and so i'm like okay why not give it an
04:18opportunity
04:19i do believe brett has a gold fever but i i try not to mention that to him
04:25he always dreams big and i like that but sometimes i have to rope him back down
04:29okay this is what we can do this is maybe what we can't do my dad didn't teach me geology
04:35and how
04:36all that works so i have absolutely no clue he wants to not make the same mistakes his dad did
04:47i need to find a way to bury that negative hatchet that's been in my life for so many years
04:56what do you have invested in this so far so far we've got about 45 50 000 okay have you
05:04been able
05:04to recover any gold yeah i mean it's not as much as i would like to see obviously never is
05:10in the three weeks we've gotten about close to five grams
05:18how many yards have you ran ran 130 yards so far in the last three weeks and you've only got

05:25grams yeah yeah that's not real great no not at all what do you need a day to survive in
05:32here well
05:33we're hoping we can survive with about a half ounce a day hopefully this will rescue us a lot of
05:40people
05:40go gold mining because they want less stress and end up with more stress right yeah yeah i think the
05:45hardest lesson to learn with running the business and knowing how to shut it down is the walking
05:50around feeling like you failed your family so i don't want to do that again i got to do this
05:59right
05:59this this is make or break for us for sure so yep we're reaching out to you guys to help

06:05started on that right foot the first time so and we won't pull any punches yeah if we think
06:10there's not enough gold here then we'll tell you right off yeah you know it's going to be kind of
06:15a new one for freddie and i because typically we come into a situation where you know people have
06:18been mining there for years or you know at least couple months you know so this is pretty much a
06:23fresh startup it is well you want to do a test run we want to watch you guys operate your
06:28plant
06:29sounds like a plan yeah sounds great well excellent let's go for it
06:38so what do you do here josh that's pretty much the ground guy just watch over and make sure
06:45everything's good we'll fire it up let's do it
06:55first bucket line the four-hour test begins as brett feeds dirt into his hopper
07:05aided by vibration it drops through grizzly bars which should sieve out any large rocks and waste
07:12material the pay is then washed by the spinning 12-foot trommel before running into the six-foot sluice
07:21where the gold is caught look at all the organics on the spray bar yeah
07:45trying to get the rocks out of the grizzly with the weeds so far there's been a lot of down
07:50time
07:50because he has to keep on jumping out of the excavator to clear the grizzly finding it up watch yourself
08:07these tough times recently have made it hard for us to get out of that hole that we're in right
08:13now
08:13and i just want to see my parents smile more and things to be better
08:25he's not hopping very hard right now yeah i was thinking that too
08:31a hopper's vibrator isn't strong enough to shake the pay into the wash plant
08:38he's got such a small water system here it's melting up pretty good
08:44when you get thick water you lose fine gold let's take a look at the box red
08:55there's no material
08:59but there's no material going through i'm gonna look at what he's digging yeah
09:38the material being processed is mostly
09:42soil that slipped down off the mountain side what he's doing is he doing a test for us
09:50that really isn't a test i mean i'd go to playground sand and get as much gold as
09:55he'll probably get out of this stuff let's end it right now hey brent last bucket
10:09freddy calls time on the four-hour test after just two hours
10:19you see anything one oh nothing to speak of no yeah i kind of figured we got a lot of
10:26problems going
10:26on you know luckily you're only three weeks into it so it's it's not like you've spent a year out
10:31here doing the same way right you know we can correct it early on you guys get her cleaned up

10:42you know i was feeling confident in the beginning but after the the test run today i'm really nervous
10:47about what uh freddy one are going to have to say we're going to take this all back and get
10:52it washed
10:52up and uh see what comes out of it my first impression of this family is they need to get
10:59gold
11:00because they're in a tough place right now brett's running material that he should not be running
11:05and it's multiple problems with what he's putting through there number one i don't believe there's
11:11very much gold in it number two it's full of silt and the sluice is plugged up we got our
11:19work cut
11:19out for us for sure you know watching him dig some payout and everything else you can just tell by
11:24what
11:24he's doing that it's just an experience i'm hoping that freddy and i can get enough done here because
11:29you know honestly from what he tells us he's got all his eggs in this basket this is his last
11:35chance
11:40you got a second brett yeah coming up see those rounded gravels in the wall perfect material
11:48everything you'd look for in a gold mine that's amazing
12:08oh guys here it is what we have oh yeah let's see what it is
12:24i knew the gold ray was going to be bad but uh honestly i didn't think it'd be that bad

12:30it's not even a hundredth of an ounce
12:34between 20 and 30 dollars worth of gold well you need help that's for sure no pulling any punches but
12:40you were making about every mistake out there that you could make okay you're a businessman so a
12:47gold mine is a business you know you can't let it be emotional a full week's mining would cost brett's
12:53operation nearly a thousand dollars in fuel alone but the pay in yesterday's test would mean a loss of
13:01over 200 every week at the end of the day it has to be financially feasible
13:13it's gut-wrenching standing there with my wife and my son want to make sure that you've got their backs
13:20and not failing them in chasing a pipe dream it makes me feel like that what we're doing is wasting
13:29our time and i don't want to have my dad go through that i'm a little nervous about the whole
13:36situation because you can't just learn how to mine overnight brett has a little experience when
13:40he was a kid but that didn't prepare him for where he is right now
13:46how's it going guys how's doing hey we came up with some ideas it's going to be some tough
13:52love along the way here showing you some of this stuff that we think you were doing incorrectly
13:57not everything is pay you know just because you might find traces of gold in it doesn't mean
14:02it's pay okay one of the big things that we really want to do is teach you go in there
14:05get all the over burden off and then we get down to the pay layer another thing we watch you
14:10outside
14:10multiple times with a crowbar cleaning those grizzly bars out right what we want to do is we want to
14:15build a set of lifter bars like grizzlies but they actually go underneath and they actually hydraulically
14:20lift up and they'll push everything out of the grizzlies no way yeah that's cool yeah fantastic and we want
14:26to add more shake to your eccentric it needs to be you know fairly violent all the time
14:32and we only ran two hours right your water was almost to the point where you needed to shut down
14:38so we want to put a silt dam in to make that silt drop out before it gets to your
14:43pump that makes
14:43a good point there
14:50to eliminate the organic material and rocks that clog brett's hopper one will build a one-of-a-kind
14:58hydraulic rake system to help clear this waste material from the grizzly bars
15:06to increase vibration on the shaker deck new weights will be added to the eccentric to boost
15:13the flow of pay
15:17and a silt dam will be installed to reduce soil suspended in the water brett uses to process pay
15:28and most urgently freddie will take brett on a prospect of the claim to identify better pay
15:37so we figured up rough numbers and it's going to be around four thousand dollars for the parts the
15:43steel that's just the materials right and then not now but if you guys get back to the point where
15:51you're actually making money it's being successful what we would like to see a year from now is announce
15:55a piece well to me i think it's worth the investment to start off right okay we genuinely want to
16:02help you
16:02guys yeah because you know at the end of the day it is your last chance right you're talking about
16:06this is the hell mary you want to go in there and do the best you can for you and
16:09your family
16:10and we want the same right right well we'll get out there you guys are good sounds like a plan

16:16so excited to see the outcome of this the biggest thing in my past was watching my father gamble too

16:23things so we are very concerned about what we're getting engaged into but we believe in the long run
16:30it's going to be worth it i'd like to continue the gold mining as a family obviously our time is
16:36money i'm hoping it'll be a good outcome why don't we pull a brett's hopper off and take it up

18:07for her wedding that's coming up in a week dad gets to see daughter get married very excited
18:15my thoughts on my dad seeing him go from doing something he's done for as long as i've been alive
18:2128 years and seeing him do something massively different is a little concerning i've heard
18:28him talk about his dad and the experiences he had growing up so it surprised me when he was like
18:34i'm
18:34gonna go dig in the dirt and i'm like okay why but i think ultimately it is financial and emotional
18:42i just hope he's seeing everything properly
18:52watch your hands yeah we're good it went all right so far so good but we haven't got it out

19:02freddie and juan must now transport the 1500 pound load through the creek and up to six miles of rugged
19:10terrain using only the atv you guys want to go ahead of us and just kind of follow my pace

19:18make it happen guys all right let's do it there's one creek crossing that's got me concerned down here

20:03off grid on the idaho claim of greenhorn miner brett allen must be bound freddie and juan faced their
20:11first challenge transporting the hopper uphill to their service trucks i'd go up another 10 feet that
20:19way you're not on a hill okay so i'm going to be in low gear okay one turn your wheels

20:35go there we go deep rocks and the steepness of the entry and exit make it a little bit tough

20:42weight it's always nice to have backup
20:52holy one made it good driving thank you sir i'm gonna go back down to the mine with the hopper

21:00delivered yeah i'm gonna get going up here freddie heads back down to the mine site with brett to
21:07inspect the cut while one jumps into the hopper upgrade with josh are you gonna be able to help
21:13me for the day yeah yeah perfect well i got a couple things i need you to do i'm really

21:18that freddie comes up with something because honestly without better ground all this is for not
21:26put the hook on okay that's good in the first test run organic material and rocks repeatedly block up
21:35brett's hopper what we're gonna do josh we're gonna cut all the grizzlies out okay we're gonna put all
21:38new ones in and then we'll actually start building the fingers that go in between them to be able to
21:42clear them out yeah juan first cuts out the grizzlies okay your time to shine
21:55you're gonna be able to do it before josh smooths the old wells
22:01now let's say we do find some decent ground do you want to stay out here with your dad and
22:04run
22:05this place yeah we're looking for a fresh start from our business so yeah yeah it's just not working
22:10for us we like to work for ourselves and as a family yeah it's really what my dad wants to
22:16do although
22:17you got to do a little bit of everything if you want to mine yeah you guys are teaching those
22:20valuable tools to us hopefully you take it to heart and just keep on expanding on that because you'll
22:25need it
22:33before you set a plan up you always figure your cut out six miles upstream from the mine site
22:40freddie and brett work the cut
22:43the pressure is on to find good ground otherwise the fixes will count for nothing i can tell you
22:50came in here and set your plan up and then started digging correct 100 percent another important thing
22:57you spent all that time digging that and sluicing that right that sandy stuff it's garbage we only
23:02found maybe two or three colors in the sandy material that's nothing i know people get excited when they
23:06see gold especially when they're new to mining and they don't know that they're throwing away ten
23:13dollars to make ten cents one rule of thumb and modern mining for gold is move it once sometimes make
23:21money move it twice you may break even move it three times you go broke fast with my dad i
23:29remember
23:29he'd just dig hole after hole after hole i never really understood his management why he did what he did
23:36freddie's explaining that to me and the reason why we're doing it it would have been nice to have
23:41learned that when i was a kid for sure but inexperience is a game killer what we want to do
23:48is dig as deep
23:49as we can and once we dig down then i want to start testing that i don't want to be
23:55chasing a pipe dream
23:56so being able to get in and assess and validate that we've got a valuable claim that's important to us
24:06since 1863 more than one million ounces of gold was pulled out of these hills worth nearly five
24:15billion dollars at today's prices
24:20to have a chance of finding any gold the old timers missed freddie must first dig out the worthless
24:28overburden mouse that's a lot she wants to dig in that you can't dig in the dirt that's their job
24:37okay i got her you got a second brett yep you can see there's those three boulders you see those
24:46rounded gravels in the wall seeing it yeah that's what we're looking for perfect shingle compacted
24:53material everything you'd look for in a gold mine wow that's amazing that's what we want to see that
25:00stuff that's been reworked by the stream system keeps going got it that's really good
25:07filmed pretty good freddie said when you see big rocks like that they usually assign us some big gold
25:14i'm really excited that's giving me my confidence back
25:33perfect high above the creek so right now i'm just test fitting it one fabricates the rake for his
25:40one of a kind hydraulic grizzly system this rod's actually going to go towards the bottom of the
25:46pan and the cylinder is going to be underneath the pan so as the cylinder extends it'll push this rod
25:51forward push the rigs forward and get all that material off the hopper a hydraulic cylinder will
25:58generate 10 000 pounds worth of force and push clear any waste material blocking up the grizzlies
26:06all right well let's clean these up
26:11you can drill this one out since you're the master driller now
26:19yep that'll work all right pull it towards you
26:27you know it's tough though you go from a business that you know to a business that you really don't
26:30know
26:31and honestly i'm not trying to discourage you but mining's a hard business to be in
26:35i just want to see this site really work out it doesn't have necessarily to do with how hard you
26:41work you can work your butt off but if there's no gold in the ground it's all for naught right
26:45yeah
26:45you're wasting your time yeah so hopefully freddie's able to find something decent out there for you guys
26:52i got the cylinder all done now i'm going to get it mounted so that's ready to go
27:04i'm going to go grab a gold pan and i want to pan some of this and see if we
27:08see any color in it
27:09down in the creek freddie tests the promising looking pay he's just uncovered in brett's cut
27:16so we're going to take little bits randomly from them throughout the pile
27:25a moment of truth guys see if we get some color i hope so i really do
27:45you see all those rounded rocks so these have traveled quite some distance
27:54at the allen mine freddie evaluates the freshly uncovered pay two little bitty colors
28:05this time you go grab a pan do some random stuff all right
28:09it doesn't mean it's not in that pile but it's damn sure it wasn't in the pan
28:16i'd like to have seen 20 colors in that pan or 30. yeah just pan two
28:27two colors
28:30very small yeah let's try one more pan michelle
28:38okay well this pan's pretty heavy there you go let's see what we got maybe third pan's a charm huh

29:00there's a lot of challenges to mining in a tight valley
29:04it isn't like we'll have a thousand acre property here to prospect yeah we're basically on a postage
29:09stamp we don't have time to move your whole plant assembly ponds everything while we're here and test
29:15some other areas on your ground from let's say 30 feet farther over so let's just keep our fingers
29:22crossed because we have thousands of pans of materials sitting there right now yeah so we got
29:28a true test we can do there should be gold there we got rounded rocks we got big boulders we
29:34got all the
29:34telltale signs that if there is gold in the deposit that's where it'd be the only thing that's missing
29:41is the gold right where's the gold i've never been in this situation you know with the miners we've helped
29:48before we dug down to bedrock the material looked great phenomenal better than i thought it would actually
29:55i didn't see much gold i thought we'd see a lot more colors and just kind of
30:03questions where our future goes going with mining thinking uh big day tired and tons of question
30:11marks they still got enough money to put beans on the table they won't soon if this property doesn't
30:18pay the bills we're on a second test and what gold's there is what gold's there but hopefully it's more
30:25than the gold in those pans we got a lot to get done this morning i got the grizzlies installed
30:42so
30:42we still got to do the hydraulic cylinder underneath a critical day for fixes at the allen claim it's all
30:50hands on deck to get the plant ready for the second test run one time we grind away the paint
30:56here so
30:56it gives good contact for the weld he's going to put on here anything i can to take stuff off
31:01with his
31:02hands this is the wireless remote control when he's in the excavator he can wirelessly control
31:08the grizzlies he can open them or close them we had to program it but it's ready to go
31:16it's really great to work with juan i can take the skills he showed me onto the site and show
31:22my dad
31:22as well something he hasn't known that'll work on the hopper he has an eccentric and that's vibrating
31:35the hopper to be able to feed that material down onto the grizzlies next juan turns his attention to
31:41the issue of the slow feed rate those are going to be the weights for the eccentric right now it
31:48doesn't have enough vibration but by adding weight to it we should be able to get more vibration out of
31:52it that's really cool the increase in vibration will shake through more pay and allow the material to
32:00be processed in less time so now i'm going to load it on the trailer get it down to the
32:06mine site get it
32:07installed feeling the pressure
32:15well juan you ready i'm ready
32:25yeah there's no way we would have been able to do all that work at the mine site oh no
32:35we got in now we got to put it together ready yeah and run
32:41okay good a little more a little more a little more slowly let her down
32:49it's crunch time you can feel it and it you're you're just rushing and hustling
32:53bustling to work together as a team to make it all happen
33:00that looks good that's good that's exciting
33:07you ever tried this on your sandwiches it's really good i heard it's good
33:15perfect
33:19we got the hopper on all the springs are in place what we're going to do we're going to
33:23put a little bracket down below so we can put the hydraulic pump in there and the battery
33:27with the upgraded hopper now reattached let's put a silt dam in here to keep that silt up here where
33:35your tailings are time is running out on the day so freddy and brett turn their attention to one last
33:41important bush fix we're trying to get you the most gold you can get from this unproven ground that
33:47really fine gold when that water gets thick gold has a hard time falling out of that
33:52so when you make water and silt go down gravity works right well the water can go under the
33:58water will go back up but it'll help that silt continue diving so get rid of a lot of the
34:04silt
34:04that's suspended in your water it'll allow you to run your plant longer the longer you run the more gold
34:11you can get right pound your end down let's grab a tarp
34:32there we go i've got a chain we'll put in the bottom if not this tarp will just float on
34:38the
34:38surface okay so it's simple but it works we got all that pay we dug out stacked up here let's
34:47just hope
34:48there's enough gold in it all we can do now is keep our fingers crossed and see what this test
34:52does
34:56coming up we wouldn't have the amount of gold that we've extracted out of the ground had it
35:02not been for what we learned from freddy and juan
35:16we were able to get a few things done for you guys
35:19in remote southwest idaho the allen family's plant is ready for the second test run freddy got your silt
35:27dam installed there it'll keep your water cleaner longer i love the idea the silt dam will stop brett's
35:33water becoming too thick to catch any fine gold let's go take a look at the plant one of the
35:39things
35:39that we noticed was you spent 30 of your time playing with the grizzlies trying to get him cleaned
35:43out so we built you a new system that you can remotely operate the grizzlies and it pushes all the
35:48material out brett can now continuously feed pay without stopping to clear them great idea we also did
35:56some extra weights on your eccentrics the extra vibration of the hopper will increase the flow of
36:02pay down into the wash plant like that let's do a two-hour test okay let's do it start up
36:16oh yeah hopefully this test lets them know whether to stay in line or to claim this property and move
36:24out
36:25i'm hopeful but i'm i'm a little worried that family support for brett is going to be critical right
36:32now two-hour test huh start a timer let's do it freddy runs a two-hour test to get a
36:39like for like result
36:41to compare with the first run first bucket
36:49see the rake is pushing it yeah that's cool man
36:57this is something we've never tried before and honestly i'm really happy the way it's working
37:03so damn's working good water looks a lot cleaner than before okay this is looking really good every
37:12rock coming off nice and clean
37:16if all of this turns out very successful it would mean pretty much everything
37:21there's two hours huh yep hey brett last bucket

37:36get it cleaned up guys and we'll meet you for a gold way huh sounds like a winner let's go

37:47the allen's hope of replacing their auto body business with a viable gold mining venture rests on
37:54these results you said when we first got here you know you tell us straight up what you think and
37:59that's what we've done this whole week yeah pour it in there

38:16let's call it 150 160 dollars worth of gold there for two hours
38:21with his upgraded plant and better ground in a 10-hour day brett could make just 800
38:30still not where it needs to be no it's not right hate to say that you know yeah only half
38:36of what
38:36he needs to make this a viable business for himself and his family but nothing ventured nothing gained
38:45right your business back home you know instead of sitting there crying about it you're out trying
38:48to make a living still trying to do the best you can for your wife and your kids you know
38:53and they're
38:53supporting you thanks you've already got a plant you've already got pumps and you have a team with
38:59you that can help you succeed if you find the right ground more than anything you have a team that's
39:04willing to stick with you through anything so that's a big thing yeah that's priceless yeah but you
39:10should reclaim this property and move out yeah so figure out where that next step is you got it

39:27was to hopefully change their future but people get gold fever right and gold mining's like any
39:34other business if you don't know what you're doing you're not going to make it brett's worked his tail

39:43you know there's a lot of people that wouldn't even try or attempt to do what he's done and he's
39:47done it granted you know it didn't go his way but honestly there's no there's no shame in failure
39:53the shame is not trying at all and he tried it's uh not what i expected but it's what i
40:01needed to hear
40:03this family is a lot stronger than people look in and see from the outside no matter what hardships
40:08come at us we're able to just move on get the next thing done if i was digging a trench
40:14and i
40:15came across any of these three yeah that would be the treasure and i'd throw everything else back

40:35so we came together as a family and realized that if we continued to stay on the mine site we

40:41it wasn't going to be profitable and that led us to an opportunity to purchase my dad's old claim back
40:48it's a really weird experience seeing my own son working a piece of land that you know i had a

40:55attachment to as a kid we've worked 20 days on the new mine site and we pulled 4.5 ounces

41:03so we have income coming in and we will keep building the mine as a business what's really
41:09cool about this is we're erasing bad memories and making great memories we wouldn't have the amount of
41:15gold that we've extracted out of the ground had it not been for what we learned from freddy and juan
41:20and
41:21the best part of all this is my dad is officially coming to the mine site and we're pretty excited
