00:02:35it's deceiving how uh how quick this current really is

00:02:48to the west of the legendary gold town of dawson city in a remote corner of the yukon lies the

00:02:55fraught in mind

00:03:00in 2024 the yukon territory produced over 200 million dollars worth of gold

00:03:07with dawson city's gold revenue rising by 34

00:03:19morgan here sounds like he never takes a day off he wants to make a good living for his family

00:03:24being able to make a good living mining uh you know is a possibility but it takes a lot to

00:03:29do it

00:03:29you know there's been a lot of people that have come out here to to make a fortune but have

00:04:55We're about two kilometers down to the mouth of the creek

00:05:04What did you do for gold last year?

00:05:07So we were hoping for 200 last year.

00:05:09We got 150.

00:05:11We didn't get as much as we wanted.

00:05:13We got a lot of bills, and we're trying to grow the business.

00:05:17We're trying to buy new equipment.

00:05:18He started with a gold pen walking through the bush.

00:05:24There's so much to love about gold mining for me.

00:05:27Being outside, exploring in the place I grew up.

00:05:31I was born here, and gold's just in the air.

00:05:35At 25, I started a job with a prospector.

00:05:39It turned him into a multimillionaire,

00:05:43maybe $100 million or more.

00:05:45I couldn't believe how wealthy he'd become,

00:05:48and it was just a motivation for me to try it for myself.

00:05:5341-year-old Morgan set up his full-time mining operation

00:05:59So now here I am with a gold mine.

00:06:27I'm at home with three little kids that are growing like weeds,

00:06:30and we also homeschool the kids.

00:06:32And I just do a little bit of the bookkeeping for the business.

00:06:40So over the last six years, how much have you produced out of here?

00:06:42I've gotten 600 ounces.

00:06:47I've got a couple employees, but I've still got to show up every day,

00:06:50direct everybody what to do, trying to make a living at it full-time.

00:06:55What's your goal for this year?

00:06:56It's 200 ounces.

00:06:59We're at 40 ounces so far.

00:07:02We're averaging eight to ten hours on a sluice day,

00:07:05but we spent a good chunk of the first part of the season fixing things, maintaining.

00:07:10But, you know, things are breaking down,

00:07:13and I don't have expertise in fabricating, welding,

00:07:17and so that's a roadblock for me.

00:07:19Do you have any gold that you're with you?

00:07:21Yeah, actually, I brought some gold.

00:07:24So that's an ounce of the gold we get.

00:07:28Yeah, this gold hasn't traveled along, does it want?

00:07:30But that's still pretty jagged, yeah.

00:10:28I can't blame anyone else if I fail.

00:10:32Every year, I get the season started

00:10:34on high-interest credit cards maxed out.

00:10:37It might be $100,000 of debt

00:10:39from a few different loans and lines of credit

00:10:41because the bank, they won't touch a gold miner.

00:10:44And I've just got to hope that it comes back

00:10:46out of the ground to pay those credit cards off.

00:10:50Otherwise, it's over, because 21% payment

00:10:52on a $100,000 credit card through the winter,

00:10:55it's a lot of money.

00:18:56just covers our expenses,

01:09:49your sluice box number two what happens when wood gets wet expand expand so that pushes your ripples down tighter

01:09:59get it snug and then sideways get to right up against the side give or agree make sure they're tight

01:10:07first impressions we got a lot more sluice run here than we used to have so a lot more square

01:10:13footage of sluice and a lot of different types now so hopefully it's going to catch that fine gold that's

01:10:19coming off the end of the sluice box

01:10:22we got everything installed ready got the extension on the chute for the hopper in

01:10:26that's 100% ready to go we were able to get the distribution box here with the downspout that's in

01:10:31and we got that new sluice box in as well so looks great

01:10:38now we're at the point we're going to do is test run

01:10:40you know with a combination of everything we did we should be able to get more material through the trommel

01:10:44and ultimately be able to catch more of that fine gold

01:10:52can't wait to get this wash plan up and going again time to get started get some dirt in there

01:12:22well i think uh you know unfortunately we don't really want to use that other excavator but we may

01:12:27have to okay you know we're not going to be tracking it back and forth it's going to be

01:12:31kind of in the stationary spot so we uh we have something to use

01:12:38honestly we got it down the machine we have a massive fuel leak and what the fuel's coming out

01:12:42of the injector oh really there's no way for us to fix it in the field and uh as of

01:12:47now we don't

01:12:47have anything to run a second test

01:12:51one of them might be salvageable uh but it's going to take freddy and i both of us to get

01:12:54together and

01:12:55weld on it to get it fixed there's two excavators down i can't feed that trommel without an excavator

01:13:02we can't shovel dirt in there with our hands so it's a rough situation if freddy and one can't

01:13:08fix the excavator i don't know what what we're going to do it's always something on one

01:13:23you see it one yeah at the front and mine two excavators are down

01:13:28and the second test run rests on freddy and one's emergency plan just put like 18 inches of weld

01:13:36front and back i was going to do four here here and in the front the same way yeah it's

01:13:42cracked just

01:13:42like this in the front too we're in a real bad situation right now you know to do it right

01:13:50would take us over a week to be able to do it we don't have that kind of time we

01:13:52have to do a test

01:13:53run today because tomorrow we're on our way so what we're going to do is as much welding as we

01:13:58and uh just patch it together to try to get it where it's stabilized and we can use it

01:14:04it's the only option we have right now without doing this we won't be able to run period
