03:00We understand the caveman had to believe.
03:03He had no option.
03:06What else could he do?
03:08So belief is ingrained in our very DNA and as a species, we are a pretty recent phenomena.

03:19How old is the planet?
03:20Please think of it.
03:23There was the Big Bang and then there was a planet, 14 billion years, then 4 billion years.
03:30And compared to that, when was the cognitive revolution that enabled us to be called the Homo sapiens, the intelligent

03:44There was a 70,000 years back, right?
03:48We are not yet even born.
03:50We are in the womb.
03:52And all throughout, we have a history of believing.
03:56Because there was nothing else we could turn to.
04:02Even when there was the movement from the jungle to the village, to the fields that is, the agricultural revolution,
04:10we still had very little science, very little technology.
04:13At most, we started knowing something about grains, and the weather cycles, and water, and soil.
04:21That's the maximum that we knew of.
04:29Europe philosophy was dead for so long.
04:33Really, it came alive only in the last 400 years.
04:37The thinking part of us is really very nascent.
04:44And when it comes to the information revolution, you know how old it is.
04:48It is younger than you.
04:52So, we have been believing all along.
04:56And we have believed for so long, it's become a part of the story of our evolution.
05:03Belief comes almost naturally to us.
05:07You know, belief is energy efficient.
05:12Think of it.
05:15If you were to really calculate how far Jupiter is from Earth,
05:22how much time and resource would it take?
05:26It would take many centuries.
05:29It really took mankind many centuries.
05:32And think of the institutions you need, the labs you need,
05:36the researchers you need, the experiment you need.
05:41All of that is tremendous.
05:44Now, you can do away with all of that.
05:50With one stroke of belief.
05:57Jupiter is 4 trillion miles away from Earth.
06:03Who told you, God appeared in my dream and told me?
06:06Write that down in the books.
06:09And if you don't believe that, blasphemy.
06:13Kill him.
06:14He doesn't believe in God.
06:15See how energy efficient belief is?
06:19No investment required, no effort required, no intellectual strife required.
06:27You simply have to say, I know because I am divine.
06:31Or believe in it because that's a tradition.
06:37Belief has also served many practical purposes.
06:42When you were in the jungle and life needed to be saved.
06:48Let's say you were walking through the green.
06:51And there was this faint rustling of leaves from behind you.
06:57It paid to believe that there is a hunter behind.
07:02Now, it could even be a rabbit behind you.
07:06But it was useful to believe that it's a wolf.
07:09Why?
07:12Because, if it's a wolf, the probability is 1 by 100.
07:16But if it's a wolf and you run away, you lose nothing.
07:19If it's a wolf and you run away, you lose nothing.
07:22Even if the probability of the wolf being there is just 1 by 100.
07:29But if it's a wolf and you say, I won't believe, I want to inquire, then you will be killed.
07:36So, you said, why run the risk?
07:39Simply believe in the old anecdote that a rustling leaf implies wolf.
07:46So, belief served practical purposes.
07:49Please see.
07:51It was needed because the means of knowing were underdeveloped.
07:56However, means of knowing within were still fully developed
08:02because this does not require too many instruments.
08:05Looking honestly in the mirror is not something that is resource intensive.

08:12So, true religion is never, never, never about belief.
08:18Even when you go to the oldest wisdom literature,
08:24that comes to us from two directions.
08:28Indian and Greek.
08:30To some extent also from the Chinese direction.
08:33But mostly Indian and Greek.
08:37There is no belief there really.
08:42Vedant is the epitome of the Vedic literature and dismisses all belief.
08:50It is about knowing, not believing.
08:54You must know.
08:55The method is neti neti.
08:57And neti neti is nothing.
08:59But a stubborn refusal of everything the mind holds on to.
09:05I negate, I negate, I negate, I negate.
09:08No, I won't believe.
09:10I won't believe.
09:11Because I know why the ego wants to believe.
09:14And I also know that there is self-interest contained in every belief.
09:20No, the words of the teacher are not to be believed in.
09:24A teacher is not a teacher at all if he asks you to believe in his words.
09:30The teacher is the pathway to inquiry.
09:36The teacher is someone who says,
09:38No, you don't need to believe or trust or even have faith.
09:43In the sense, the word faith is typically used.
09:47Otherwise, faith can have better meanings.
09:50He says, no, none of that is needed.
09:54You have all that is needed to know yourself and life.
10:01Proceed.
10:02Why must you live in a second-handed way?
10:05Why must you borrow concepts?
10:10And my job as a teacher,
10:11the real teacher will say,
10:13in the Upanishads that is,
10:15the real teacher will say,
10:16my job is to not to load you with beliefs,
10:18but actually help you question your beliefs.
10:22So, what you call,
10:24as the Sanatan Dharma really,
10:27is not at all a path
10:33of devotion or belief.
10:35Not at all.
10:36If religion is about being devoted to your beliefs,
10:41then it's not religion.
10:42It's just theology.
10:44There is a great difference.
10:47What is astikta?
10:48You know?
10:48What is astikta?
10:50Astikta is not belief.
10:53Astikta means,
10:55yes,
10:55it exists.
10:57Astikta is about
10:59realizing that
11:01something beyond
11:02your experience,
11:04perception,
11:04and belief
11:06is the truth.
11:07In other words,
11:09whatever you think of
11:10as real
11:11is not real.
11:12The reality
11:13is beyond
11:15beyond what the ego
11:16can make of it.
11:17That is real astikta.
11:19So, if you are a believer,
11:20you cannot be astik.
11:24In the ontological sense,
11:25in the existential
11:26and philosophical sense,
11:28in the original sense,
11:30where the word astikta came from,
11:32if you are a believer in anything,
11:34then you cannot be astik.
11:37But today,
11:38the word astikta has come to mean
11:40someone who believes in God.
11:41Simple.
11:43It's a distortion.
11:44It's a great distortion of meaning.
11:46That's what happens to beautiful words.
11:49Over the course of history,
11:50they get
11:52distorted.
11:52Not just changed.
11:54Mutilated.
11:57And that is also
11:59what has happened
11:59to words like
12:02dharma or sanatana
12:03or astikta also.
12:05Today, you say,
12:06the believer is religious.
12:08In the real sense,
12:10anybody can be religious
12:11but not the believer.
12:13The believer can never be religious.
12:15The believer is still the caveman.
12:19You say,
12:20the believer believes in God.
12:21The believer will believe
12:22in a God of his own imagination
12:24and fancies.
12:26He will paint something
12:27and then worship it.
12:30Or he will paint something
12:31and be terrified by it.
12:34Think of the wisdom
12:36contained in this.
12:37I paint something
12:38on these wide
12:40and white walls.
12:42There's a wide canvas
12:43available here.
12:43I paint a horrible picture here
12:46with all determination.
12:48And then,
12:48I start shivering.
12:49I say,
12:50my God,
12:51so horrible.
12:51I must hide somewhere
12:52otherwise it will eat me up.
12:54Sir,
12:55you painted it on your own
12:57and now you are shivering.
13:00That's what belief does to us.
13:03Belief is not wisdom at all.
13:07And also,
13:08the great books,
13:10the great scriptures,
13:12the great works of philosophy,
13:14they will never,
13:16never ask you
13:17to trust or believe.
13:18they will invite you
13:20to question,
13:22inquire,
13:23scrutinize
13:23and know on your own.
13:25It is in knowing on our own
13:27that human dignity lies.
13:30Otherwise,
13:31any animal or idiot
13:32can be made to believe.
13:35Right?
13:36It is in knowing
13:38that we say
13:39we are conscious beings.
13:41Conscious.
13:41Would you want your parents
13:43to believe
13:45or would you want them
13:46to know?
13:48No.
13:50Would you want to trust
13:51what your patients
13:52tell you of their disease
13:53or would you rather
13:54go for a diagnosis?
13:57Because the diagnosis
13:59enables knowing.
14:00Otherwise,
14:01you can keep believing.
14:02I believe,
14:03you know anything.
14:04Beliefs are stories,
14:06fancies.
14:07any idle mind
14:08can come up
14:09with any kind of fancy
14:10and you can start believing
14:11and once it becomes
14:12a mass phenomena,
14:14you say it is religion.
14:16It is,
14:16this is mass hysteria.
14:21People getting hypnotized
14:24on a grand scale
14:26altogether
14:29becomes a trend
14:31and then you say
14:32this is our great tradition
14:34and you must believe
14:35in such things.
14:38You are truly religious
14:40if you are always questioning.
14:43That's the essence
14:44of true religion.
14:45To ask,
14:46to question.
14:47Never to,
14:47never to bow this thing down
14:50except in front of truth.
14:53I am devoted,
14:54yes,
14:55and that's real bhakti.
14:57I am devoted,

14:59not to my imaginations

15:58meet some idiot

21:34rituals and all
21:35doesn't make
21:36any sense

21:39say they don't
21:39correct themselves
21:40they don't look
21:41at themselves
21:41they are doing
21:42all kinds of
21:43rituals
21:43and you know
21:45all those
21:46things you know
21:46doesn't make
21:47any sense
21:47like that is
21:48what I'm

21:49is the remedy
21:49for this
21:49like but the
21:50whole country
21:51is doing

21:52we need to
21:53have more
21:54such discussions

21:57to empower
