00:00Here's a closer look at what unfolded Saturday night at Comerica Park, and what it means for
00:05a Tigers team already dealing with a growing list of injuries. Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres
00:10collected two hits in as many innings off Rangers starter Kumar Rocker, but he then left the game
00:15with tightness in his left side, adding another name to Detroit's rapidly expanding injury list.
00:21Torres beat out an infield single in the first inning, though he was thrown out at home trying
00:25to score on Riley Green's ensuing single. He showed no obvious signs of injury at that point,
00:32stayed in the game defensively, and stepped to the plate again in the second. There he delivered an
00:37RBI bloop single that gave the Tigers a 5-0 lead. When the team took the field for the fourth
00:43inning
00:43however, How U Lee had replaced Torres at second base. I just know he didn't feel great, asked to
00:49come out of the game with the side tightness, manager A.J. Hinch said after Saturday's 5-1 win,
00:54we'll get him a full evaluation, but he loves to play, so I immediately didn't feel great when
00:59he asked to come out, but I'm glad he did, reported, and didn't do anything further.
01:04The Tigers have battled a series of injuries over the last couple of weeks,
01:08including fellow infielders Zach McKinstry and Javier Baez, along with pitchers Casey Meese and
01:14Will Vest. McKinstry homered Saturday in the first game of his rehab assignment with AAA Toledo,
01:20splitting the game between second base and right field. He could potentially return in the
01:24coming days. The Tigers also acquired ex-teammate Zach Short from the Nationals in a minor league
01:29deal for depth on Friday, and they still have former Cubs and White Sox infielder Gage Workman
01:34hitting well in Toledo, where he's slashing 3-3-9-4-1-1-5-60, while bouncing around shortstop,
01:41second and third base. The organization has been particularly mindful of Torres' health for two
01:46reasons. He had surgery after last season to repair a sports hernia he played through for much of the
01:50second half, and he had an atypical ramp-up to action in spring training while playing in the
01:55World Baseball Classic, where he helped lead Team Venezuela to a gold medal. The Tigers monitored
02:00his workload over the first couple weeks of the season, including starts at designated hitter in
02:05five of the first 16 games. Since mid-April, however, he had settled in at second base, with only one
02:12start
02:12at DH from that point on. Given his history and how much he means to this infield, it's a situation
02:18that
02:18deserves close attention. How worried are you about Torres' early exit, and who would you feel most
02:25comfortable seeing Step into that role if he needs time to recover?
