00:02:58Please!
00:03:06Please!
00:03:07Please!
00:03:08Please!
00:03:09Please!
00:03:16I'll be right back,
00:03:18my partner,
00:03:18in sweet river for a while now i guess that's not a bad thing for book club it is ah
00:03:25but is it for
00:03:25the novel crimes club huh novel how about the plot thickens club murder by the book club
00:03:38still just book club then yeah yeah no major crimes is definitely a good thing
00:03:43but we need something else to investigate well i did come up with an idea we could try to solve
00:03:50some cold cases unsolved crimes that have stymied authorities like bigfoot all right bigfoot isn't
00:03:58an unsolved case come on everyone knows it's just a guy in a chewbacca costume messing with people
00:04:04yeah it doesn't need to be high profile perhaps we could find something a little closer to home
00:04:09you know it's the perfect way for us to continue what we're doing without getting into any real
00:04:13trouble professor yes lily i found a texas cold case foundation that catalogs unsolved murders
00:04:22disappearances and suspicious deaths oh check this out cold case about a sweet river man who
00:04:29mysteriously died while out on a hike 10 years ago right here in beacon hill park that would be a
00:04:33good case yeah what did i say something wrong yes that man who died was maria's husband oh no
00:05:06i am so sorry we didn't know my husband didn't just die mysteriously he's like he was murdered
00:05:22maria if i had known uh it was my fault it's okay sorry all of you kevin and lily you're
00:05:31too young
00:05:32to know anything about it and ainsley you weren't even here then
00:05:37every now and then i think the grief subsided a little and then it sneaks up on me out of
00:05:44nowhere
00:05:45like tonight if you ever need anyone to talk to you know i'm always here for you thank you
00:05:53i uh just need a few minutes you all know the story you can yeah fill them in
00:06:04i can't even believe i suggested looking into a local cold case without considering
00:06:09it could have affected one of us
00:06:16mark ravel
00:06:20was he related to the mayor jane is his sister and the two of them couldn't have been more different
00:06:25she was running for mayor the first time when they found him in the ravine by the falls that
00:06:30morning the official report ruled it an accident so technically it's not a cold case depends on who
00:06:38you ask there are a lot of questions surrounding this case and if you ask me i think jane had
00:06:45something to do with it his own sister that woman is so crooked if she swallowed a nail she'd spit
00:06:50out a
00:06:51corkscrew oh you can't possibly believe that baby girl when you've been around as long as i have
00:06:57you never rule out anything
00:07:03what makes mark's death suspicious
00:07:06well for starters who goes out hiking in the middle of the night
00:07:10in the winter through the snow
00:07:12no that's just the tip of the iceberg
00:07:18maria we don't need to revisit this
00:07:21no if we're gonna study a cold case here in book club we might as well start with this one
00:07:27are you sure
00:07:30yes
00:07:32i've spent so many years trying not to think about it but it's impossible
00:07:38if nothing else it might give me some closure
00:07:43hey if i started with it was a dark and stormy night would that be a too much of a
00:07:49cliche
00:07:55it was our anniversary mark had gotten our regular sitter to watch the kids
00:08:02booked us a table for two at our favorite restaurant
00:08:06but in the weeks leading up to that night mark was acting strangely there were mysterious phone calls
00:08:13in the middle of the night and anytime i asked him what was going on he would just shut down
00:08:18in the middle of dinner mark got another call
00:08:20said he had to go home and deal with something but he wouldn't tell me what it was
00:08:27what's going on i don't know i remember our babysitter was surprised we were home so early
00:08:34the kids had just gone to bed
00:08:39honey what's going on
00:08:42nothing talk to me it's gonna be okay it's gonna be okay
00:08:47and that was the last time i saw mark alive
00:08:52and you don't think mark's death was an accident it wasn't i know in my heart there's more to the
00:08:59story
00:09:02at first i thought it must have something to do with the watch
00:09:07a watch mark's grandfather's watch it was a family heirloom and mark was very protective of it
00:09:14i only ever saw him wear it once the day we got married and aside from that one day
00:09:21it was always locked away in the safe it says here that valentine rival was rumored to be the first
00:09:29watchmaker to use a flying ruby set tourbillon tourbillon tourbillon and his watch is making them some
00:09:37of the most valuable in the world did you ever have it appraised he never told me a specific number
00:09:43but
00:09:43it was significant there were always watch collectors trying to contact him offering to buy it but
00:09:52mark always politely turned them away that watch was a symbol of mark's family survival
00:09:59to him it was priceless
00:10:06maybe he had gotten into some trouble and had to sell it
00:10:11but deep down i didn't think that could be the reason but my mind it was desperate for some crumb
00:10:17of
00:10:17an explanation
00:10:20if i'd never seen that watch again i would have accepted that as the explanation but
00:10:30a few days later
00:10:34there it was
00:10:37so it must have been something else it wasn't about the watch
00:10:48maria i can't imagine what it feels like to have endured what you have
00:10:55but as far as book club i don't think it's our place to dredge all of this up
00:11:03we're not here to discuss books or solve crimes or anything else
00:11:10that's just window dressing
00:11:13the real reason we're in this club is to remind ourselves that we're not alone
00:11:18and to help each other
00:11:21it tonight made me realize that i need help with this
00:11:25even if we never solve the case just understand what happened it would mean so much to it
00:11:34so what do you say i'm in me too definitely in count me in well that bigfoot chewbac
00:11:43angle is pretty intriguing but i guess i'm in too
00:11:45i guess we found our next case
00:11:58look at the position of his body
00:12:00he was dead for some time before they found him current of the river could have affected his position
00:12:06well the old coroner's report lists multiple musculoskeletal fractures in both arms
00:12:11shattered wrists forearms elbows thanks for getting this sierra really helpful
00:12:16yeah of course no problem it's a bit before my time i had to dig way back in the database
00:12:20to get it
00:12:22body position not consistent with the injuries something is hinky here can you please find your own words
00:12:30all right hinky's my word my office my words soon you're going to want to be the sheriff aren't you
00:12:35no i don't look at him brown speaking of i love your coat where did you get that oh thanks
00:12:40there's
00:12:40a vintage pop-up in town i'll take you oh you know instead of hinky you could have said fishy
00:12:47because the body was found in water i don't know why you're wasting your time with this this is the
00:12:51easiest cold case in the world to solve it's not even a cold case it's a lukewarm case i went
00:12:58to
00:12:58middle school with a guy named lukewarm true story mark was a gambler he probably owed some debts tried
00:13:05to use the watch to pay them off and got killed in the process wait so you agree he was
00:13:09murdered
00:13:10i didn't agree to anything don't put words in my mouth i didn't say murdered you said killed i have
00:13:15witnesses i heard it yo he became a weatherman who lukewarm perfect name for a weatherman right it's
00:13:22like born to do the job shouldn't you be at the station waxing your truck or something no
00:13:28fargie don't do that all i'm saying is that mark could have been killed but not necessarily but if
00:13:35he was trading his watch to pay off debts why was it still wearing it when they found him because
00:13:40gangsters aren't usually in the watch business if you owe the money you have to pay the money still it
00:13:45had value why wouldn't they take it maybe they didn't have time can we wrap this up just admit
00:13:55this is not a lukewarm case okay fine how would you like me to refer to it hinky
00:14:05it is pretty hinky uh ains and i are meeting at duly's in a little bit if you want to
00:14:13join we
00:14:14could invite ryan make it a double date yeah double date oh that's just a saying and just a figure
00:14:20speech me and ryan you think i would actually date someone who wears a cowboy hat to work it's called
00:14:24stetson anyway here's that photocopy of the police report i had to get somebody to show me how to use
00:14:31the photocopier that thing is intense well thank you deputy trainee you're welcome chief i'd love to
00:14:40join but it's uh trivia night down at yonder's let me know if you need anything else okay bye bye
00:14:47do you know who d barnes is dalton barnes yeah he's the former sheriff before ryan took over
00:14:57you okay do you think i'm doing the right thing the right thing i didn't come to sweet river to
00:15:06meddle in everyone else's lives i came here to sort through my own yeah you know something my
00:15:13grandmother used to say the right thing and the most difficult thing are usually the same thing
00:15:22you didn't answer my question oh yes i did i gotta go check into the station but i will see
00:15:27you later
00:15:28yes
00:15:47now that boy didn't stand you up did he what you know you stand up a girl in texas
00:15:54well that's as welcome as a wet shoe he's gonna be on his knees begging to get her back no
00:16:00he's not
00:16:01standing me up he just had to stop the fire station well you let me know if you need anything
00:16:05okay
00:16:07hey there he is how you doing chief i was kind of worried about you i'm all right you cutting
00:16:12it
00:16:12close hi i know i know no work on dates i will put my computer away in two seconds one
00:16:17two three three and
00:16:21a half three and three quarters okay okay work over date on when you ever stop working it's true
00:16:30sorry you don't apologize that's what i love about you
00:16:37can i just tell you one thing about the case sure
00:16:41mark's grandfather was one of the most famous watchmakers in russia he made very prestigious
00:16:47watches for royalty but world war ii completely destroyed his company his workshops and his
00:16:53entire inventory so mark's watch was more than just a family heirloom i mean who knows how many were
00:17:01left well according to what i could find on the net marks might be the only one it's like finding
00:17:08a
00:17:08picasso in your basement it's like finding the only picasso in existence in your basement
00:17:15somebody must have figured out what he had maria said that mark was getting strange phone calls in
00:17:22the middle of the night that upset him but he wouldn't tell her what they were about
00:17:28so maybe the watch became too much of a liability so he decided to sell to the person who was
00:17:32threatening
00:17:32him no except he didn't the watch was still on his wrist when they found him right could have gotten
00:17:40smashed before he made the transaction if you break a priceless watch does that make it worthless
00:17:48depends how broken it is is the picasso still a picasso if you take a chainsaw to it
00:17:53really need to see this watch jake trenton
00:17:58hey no no no none of that mayor stuff you knew me when i had pimples and braces oh
00:18:06it is so good to see you yeah um how rude of me you must be the famous ainsley mcgregor

00:18:50well enough of my blathering on i will let the two of you get back to your meeting ainsley the
00:18:56pleasure
00:18:57is mine jt don't be a stranger we should uh find a time to catch up all right then bye
00:19:07bye bye she's got my vote
00:19:18oh hi george hey george you know dually's does a mean brisket sandwich but there was no way that
00:19:24i would dream of finishing it and not sharing it with my best four-legged friend come on yes somehow
00:19:31he's never as enthusiastic when i bring home a chopped salad well in the rock paper scissors of food
00:19:36brisket always beat salad oh is that so what beats brisket more brisket are you teaching later
00:19:44today no not today i'm meeting sir at this little pop-up to do some shopping nice yeah and then
00:19:50we have
00:19:50book club tonight so you and jane went to high school together yeah yeah sweet river secondary
00:20:01old friend of mine that means you must have also know mark not really i mean i met him a
00:20:06few times but
00:20:07his family sent him to boarding school he was always getting in trouble i think
00:20:10you know ryan's theory about him you know getting gambling debts it checks out
00:20:16well maria never mentioned anything about mark being a gambler maybe he ate it from her
00:20:23back to jane uh you know what i'm just looking at the time i gotta get going
00:20:26oh come on they're not gonna tell me i'm a big girl i can take it
00:20:34uh tell you what what do you think jane tea were you and jane more than friends in high school
00:20:43were you
00:20:44boyfriend and girlfriend okay fine yes we are gonna do this uh yes we were okay let me guess you
00:20:54were quarterback and she was promptly yeah baby yes you nailed it yeah really mm-hmm that is
00:21:01so cute why didn't you want to tell me that no it's not that i didn't want to tell you
00:21:06it's just
00:21:07it's not important it's ancient history well of course it's important it's your history and how silly
00:21:14would that be if i was jealous of your teenage puppy love romance well it was a little more serious
00:21:21than
00:21:21that high school sweethearts we almost got engaged oh oh wow but but i called it off
00:21:31we were just way too young i don't think she ever really got over it i mean i'm kind of
00:21:38the one that
00:21:38got away anyway um that is ancient history i i i don't know why i said that um but you
00:21:49were absolutely
00:21:50right i should have told you and next time i will
00:21:57yeah or not you know maybe we don't have to tell each other everything
00:22:04okay um i actually do have to go this time
00:22:13but i will um i will see you tomorrow okay
00:22:22bye
00:22:29what do you think of the mayor georgie
00:22:34oh yeah you're right she could spend more time creating off-leash parks
00:22:39and less time bothering the fire chief
00:22:46the autopsy report didn't find any pulmonary edema
00:22:50no water in the lungs means mark didn't drown
00:22:53plus the defensive wounds on his arms indicate he hit the ground not the water
00:22:57well you know the spot in the park where he fell right we've hiked there before
00:23:01yeah i think so the river's really narrow at that point
00:23:10so so somebody dragged his body into the water
00:23:14possibly post-martem is my guess i'm gonna go try these on okay
00:23:21let me know if i can help you find anything you like
00:23:24uh oh yeah i i don't need any help finding something i like you've got great stuff here
00:23:29i appreciate that it's too bad i'm gonna have to close tomorrow i guess they found someone to pick
00:23:34up the lease in the storefront such as the life of a pop-up shop
00:23:42you're ainsley mcgregor aren't you yes have we no no no but i know all about you from maria

00:25:34okay okay yeah
00:25:47oh can't believe i didn't even think to see if pipa wanted to open her pop-up in here
00:25:52oh thank you for making it happen oh my pleasure she'll fit right in
00:25:57mm-hmm so are you excited about tonight i'm always excited for book club because if you're not easily
00:26:05stop it i'm fine okay i'm sorry i i won't ask you again
00:26:14before everyone gets here can i ask you a couple of questions about the watch sure but uh i really
00:26:22don't know much about it it's still in the safe at home i haven't opened it in years i can
00:26:27show it to
00:26:27you if you want yes i was gonna ask you anyway if you wouldn't mind coming by my house to
00:26:33water my
00:26:33seedlings i'm taking samantha to visit the boys at school yeah of course no problem thank you oh i can
00:26:40text you the combination to the safe yeah it's probably better i'm not there anyway you can even
00:26:46take it i'd rather not see the watch in the state it's in okay i promise i'll be very careful
00:26:57there's no damage you could do to that watch that hasn't already been done
00:27:10okay let's start with what we know yes yes the known knowns it's what they're called the things
00:27:15we know that we know as opposed to the unknown knowns the things we don't know that we know
00:27:21then there's the unknown unknowns the things we don't know we don't know and of course finally
00:27:25there's the known unknown the things we know we don't know how about we just keep it simple okay
00:27:33wonderful idea okay we know that mark was meeting someone the night he was murdered and that it might
00:27:39have had to do with the watch clandestine meetings mysterious phone calls in the middle of the night
00:27:44it's safe to assume that he was in some kind of trouble this is the spot where mark's body was
00:27:51found oh what ironically that's also very near the pond where mark first proposed
00:28:00under a gorgeous sweeping willow tree
00:28:03nice work deputy deputy attorney let's discuss mark's background is there anything about his past that
00:28:11might be relevant here
00:28:16we aren't going to get anywhere by being polite i know what i signed up for
00:28:21there were rumors mark had a gambling problem
00:28:24did he he got into some trouble when he was younger but as a husband and father he never would
00:28:31have
00:28:31done anything to put us in harm's way he even put all the bank accounts in my name just to
00:28:36make sure
00:28:37there was never any doubt in my mind and there wasn't what about the arrest
00:28:45mark had been hanging around a guy named brance mosby a local pawn shop owner in town
00:28:51he and brance were working on something but mark wouldn't tell me what it was
00:28:55one night mark must have been followed because the police raided brance's store when he was there
00:29:01charges running an illegal gambling ring but mark was the only one arrested you can't run a gambling
00:29:07ring by yourself mark was not gambling that night it was a setup i suspect the police were involved
00:29:15our previous sheriff was a man named dalton barnes mark's sister jane was just about to be elected mayor
00:29:20and there were rumors that those two didn't get along there was a power struggle between them
00:29:26but what would that have to do with a pawn broker maybe mark was just a pawn in the game
00:29:33why do i even try what kind of relationship did mark have with his sister complicated jane tried to
00:29:39help mark get the charges dropped but he refused said he didn't trust her who else knew about the watch
00:29:47as far as i know just jane and me mark didn't even let the kids know he had it
00:29:55was mark left-handed how did you know well he's holding the cake cutting knife with his left hand
00:30:02and the watch is there on his right it's harder to sell a watch built for southpaw maybe he was
00:30:07talking to rance mosby about buying the watch no he wouldn't try and fence a watch that expensive
00:30:12through a local pawnbroker maybe rance knows a guy who knows a guy i think a reasonable place to start
00:30:21is with mr mosby tomorrow mark was left-handed he wore his watch on his right arm but in the
00:30:35crime scene
00:30:35photos the watch was on his left well maybe he didn't care what arm his watch was on oh we're
00:30:42here
00:30:54this is where mark like to hang out yeah maybe we'll get a great deal on a beta max vcr
00:31:06yes uh hi are you open
00:31:24oh here we go oh you fire department donkeys just can't get enough of your inspections can you
00:31:32always have to pop by and make sure everything is up to code what are you here for this time
00:31:38chief
00:31:38you want to make sure i've got batteries in my smoke alarm
00:31:44well actually we're not here on fire department business you're not
00:31:49well come on in then well weirdo you know you should really rethink your outfit there smoky
00:31:57it's intentionally misleading now can i interest anyone in some kombucha i made it myself oh that's
00:32:07very tempting but i try not to drink kombucha after 2006 that's sad yeah what you in the market for
00:32:15then um beta max ah physical media very smart you will need that when they shoot the satellites out
00:32:24the sky
00:32:28so is this your pawn shop excuse me i'm sorry um do i look like someone who run a predatory
00:32:37business that
00:32:37preys upon poor people in the service of capitalist greed i'm fighting war against planned obsolescence
00:32:45this isn't this isn't a pawn shop this is the junkyard of dreams i i'm not one thing i'm everything

00:44:39Got you!
00:44:41Got you!
00:44:45What happened?
00:44:47Somebody pushed me!
00:44:49Did you see anyone?
00:44:51No one.
00:44:53Come on, let's get out of here.
00:44:55Just so I'm clear.
00:44:57Just so I'm clear, public park, broad daylight, someone runs up behind you, pushes you, runs
00:45:03away, and you see nothing.
00:45:06Nothing?
00:45:08How much did that criminology degree cost?
00:45:11No, I was looking down into the ravine.
00:45:15What about you?
00:45:16What about you?
00:45:16What about you?
00:45:16Did you see anybody?
00:45:17I don't know, no one.
00:45:19Who had even known that you were there?
00:45:21Well, I just called Sierra to meet me, that's it.
00:45:23I swear, I was joking about wanting to do more autopsies.
00:45:26No, it has to be someone who knows we're looking into the Roval case and doesn't like it.
00:45:30What?
00:45:31Rants?
00:45:31Possibly.
00:45:33No, but this person was quick.
00:45:35Nimble.
00:45:36Athletic.
00:45:36Right.
00:45:37And it was in a park.
00:45:38Rants doesn't exactly strike me as the outdoorsy type.
00:45:41Or it could be something separate altogether.
00:45:45Chicago?
00:45:47No.
00:45:48This was panicked.
00:45:50Impulsive.
00:45:52If those people want you dead, you won't feel a thing.
00:45:56You'll just be dead.
00:45:59Oh, well that's a relief.
00:46:01Regardless, I don't think you should be alone tonight.
00:46:05I'll stay.
00:46:10Cool.
00:46:15Yep, George and I will just stay on the couch again.
00:46:20Fine.
00:46:22Want me to give you a drive home?
00:46:23Yeah, that'd be great.
00:46:31What's this?
00:46:35I drive right by her place on my way home.
00:46:38That's convenient.
00:46:40Oh, no.
00:46:41Just keep your phone on and lock your doors, please.
00:46:44Bye.
00:46:48Hmm.
00:47:09Freeze!
00:47:11Sorry.
00:47:14I didn't want to wake you.
00:47:17You know, it's fine.
00:47:18I just...
00:47:19I wasn't sleeping anyways.
00:47:20I was just, uh, guarding with my eyes closed.
00:47:25There's just something that's been bothering me about this.
00:47:29You know, when I was standing there, looking down at the spot where Mark fell,
00:47:34just something didn't seem right.
00:47:36Just something didn't seem right.
00:47:37You know, there were no jagged rocks or anything.
00:47:40That's why Mark's body didn't have any lacerations.
00:47:44Yeah?
00:47:47There's no scratches or scrapes anywhere.
00:47:51Just this broken crystal.
00:47:53It's almost like someone smashed it with a hammer.
00:47:57Wait.
00:47:59The time says 6.12.
00:48:01In the morning.
00:48:03Yeah.
00:48:04But the time of death on the autopsy report said around 2 a.m.
00:48:08So maybe the watch kept working for a couple hours after Mark fell?
00:48:13Possibly.
00:48:15But the crystal here, it's blocking the hands.
00:48:19We need somebody to tell us what we're looking at.
00:48:23Rance is a horologist.
00:48:26Rance?
00:48:28Isn't he one of our suspects?
00:48:31All the more reason to talk to him tomorrow.
00:48:33Oh, fine, but hey, I am not drinking any of that bathtub kombucha.
00:48:39Ew.
00:48:40Fine.
00:48:41Hey.
00:48:42So, what can I do for City Hall?
00:48:44Oh, I just wanted to come by and make sure you're good with the fire department's appropriations and the new
00:48:48municipal budget.
00:48:49Well, yeah, I signed off on those.
00:48:51Didn't your office get them?
00:48:52We did.
00:48:53I just wanted to double check.
00:48:55Okay, well, I am double confirming.
00:48:59Is that why you came down here today?
00:49:00Because you could have just replied to the email.
00:49:02Oh, I'm more of an in-person kind of person.
00:49:06Though, there is something else I wanted to ask you about.
00:49:12Ainsley's looking into my brother's death?
00:49:15Uh, yeah, who told you that?
00:49:17She had the police reports the other night at the restaurant.
00:49:20Right.
00:49:21Uh, yeah, she's trying to get Maria some closure.
00:49:25I could use some closure, too.
00:49:29Of course.
00:49:30Look, I think it's wonderful that she's taking the initiative.
00:49:33You'll let me know if she gets any answers or if there's any way I can be of any assistance.
00:49:40Will do.
00:49:44Nice shot, Sheriff.
00:50:03Whoo!
00:50:04Four!
00:50:06This one's a natural, she is.
00:50:10How about another ding-dong?
00:50:12You are reading my mind.
00:50:17So how long were you Sheriff of Sweet River?
00:50:20Oh, too long.
00:50:24Thankfully, this young buck came along to put me out of my misery.
00:50:29And, uh, what is it that you do?
00:50:32I'm a criminologist.
00:50:33I work for the police department as well.
00:50:36Do you now?
00:50:37In fact, I was hoping to ask you a couple of questions about an old case.
00:50:42The death of Mark Ravel.
00:50:46I'm an old man.
00:50:48I don't remember what I had for breakfast, let alone old cases.
00:50:52Oh, come on.
00:50:53There must be something you remember that could help us.
00:50:56In fact, you were the one who redacted the original police report.
00:51:05You don't want to get into that.
00:51:08This is Texas, ma'am.
00:51:10Around here, we believe it's better to let sleeping dogs lie.
00:51:19I can't believe you did that.
00:51:21If you mean eat four ding-dongs, neither can I.
00:51:24Definitely hitting the gym tomorrow.
00:51:25You were supposed to be polite.
00:51:27I was polite.
00:51:28I was politely inquisitive.
00:51:43You know, Ains, sweet rivers are home, but we'll always be outsiders in some folks' eyes.
00:51:52You start pointing fingers at people like the mayor and Barnes.
00:51:56You gotta be really careful.
00:51:58But if they're involved-
00:51:59You know who's responsible for appointing me a sheriff?
00:52:03The mayor.
00:52:05You know who's responsible for appointing the fire chief?
00:52:09The mayor.
00:52:12You gotta be careful.
00:52:35You sure about this?
00:52:37Not sure about anything anymore.
00:52:43You two.
00:52:45Didn't you get my subtle hint that I didn't really want to talk about Marc Ravel?
00:52:49We're not here to talk about the case.
00:52:51We're here to get your expert opinion on something.
00:52:55Which expert do you need?
00:52:57The horologist.
00:52:59I want you to take a look at this watch.
00:53:14Where did you get that?
00:53:16It belongs to my friend Maria.
00:53:18It's very valuable.
00:53:23Well, that's unfortunate.
00:53:25This was a nice watch.
00:53:28Not as nice as the real one.
00:53:31What?
00:53:32This one's a fake.
00:53:42It's a really good fake.
00:53:44But a replica nonetheless.
00:53:47Every now and then you see a convincing copy of a designer watch on the market.
00:53:53It's called a super fake.
00:53:56How can you be sure?
00:53:58The last Valentin Ravel timepiece was made in 1938.
00:54:06You think they had a button cell battery in 1938?
00:54:14Here's the thing about expensive watches.
00:54:19They might be pretty, but that's not what makes them valuable.
00:54:24I mean, this is very elegant.
00:54:26It's got a nice crocodile skin strap.
00:54:29Isn't that a good thing?
00:54:30Not for the crocodile.
00:54:33But you don't pay for that.
00:54:35You pay for the guts, the mechanics.
00:54:39You know what's special about an original Valentin Ravel?
00:54:44You know what makes it tick?
00:54:46A flying ruby set tourbillon.
00:54:49Exactly.
00:54:51Not a $2 battery from Best Buy.
00:54:53If this were an actual Valentin Ravel, I wouldn't advise transporting unless you were accompanied by an armed guard.
00:55:02It's worth about $3 million.
00:55:08That's why the watch was left on the body.
00:55:11Because it's a fake.
00:55:13Mm-hmm.
00:55:14So whoever stole the watch, somehow figured out it was fake, smashed it, put it back on the body.
00:55:19That accounts for the four-hour difference in the time of death versus the time on the broken watch.
00:55:24But why do that?
00:55:26Because if the valuables are left on the corpse, there's no suspicion of foul play.
00:55:30Right. It just gets ruled an accidental death.
00:55:32Now, somebody could have taken the real watch and replaced it with a fake one just to throw off the
00:55:39scent?
00:55:39It would have to be a dead ringer of a fake to even hope you could fool anyone that it
00:55:44was real.
00:55:44Where would you even get something like that made?
00:55:46You're right.
00:55:48The other major question is, who has the real watch?
00:55:52I'll get a search done of all the international registries and auction houses, and if the sale was made legitimately,
00:55:58we might be able to trace it back to the seller.
00:56:00You're not going to be alone tonight, right?
00:56:02No, she's not.
00:56:07Getting to really like that couch.
00:56:19See you at my place?
00:56:21I will be right behind you.
00:56:29See you in a bit.
00:56:35Drive.
00:56:37If you want to live, Ainsley, drive now.
00:56:59Whatever.
00:57:00Right here.
00:57:03Right.
00:57:04Turn off the engine.
00:57:11What's that?
00:57:13You'll see.
00:57:33This was the GPS tracker you were supposed to find.
00:57:47And this was the one you weren't supposed to find.
00:57:53Let me see a phone.
00:57:58Unlock it, please.
00:58:04Here.
00:58:05Ah, yes.
00:58:07Ah, look at that.
00:58:08Your phone has been cloned.
00:58:11How do you know that?
00:58:13I'm also a technophile.
00:58:16And it makes sense if someone is tracking you.
00:58:20These days, they use the two things that move with you.
00:58:24And there we are.
00:58:27Your phone is clean.
00:58:29You're welcome.
00:58:36Jake.
00:58:37Ainsley?
00:58:37I'm okay.
00:58:38I'm okay.
00:58:38I'm okay.
00:58:39It's okay.
00:58:40I can't believe I almost lost you.
00:58:42I just turned around and you were gone.
00:58:44And then I've been driving around for the past 20 minutes trying to find you.
00:58:46I know.
00:58:46I'm not in danger.
00:58:47Everything's fine.
00:58:49Rance?
00:58:51No, he's fine.
00:58:52He's fine.
00:58:52He's our friend.
00:58:54Right?
00:58:55Well, I'm nobody's friend.
00:58:58I'm just a ghost in the night.
00:59:02A face in the crowd.
00:59:04A fly on the wall.
00:59:06But if you're asking me whether or not I'm on your side,
00:59:09well, I'm on the side of righteousness.
00:59:13And in my view, eh, Mac?
00:59:16That's you.
00:59:18Okay.
00:59:20Tell us everything.
00:59:22He was there that night.
00:59:29The night Mark died.
00:59:31Did you see it happen?
00:59:33No.
00:59:34In the weeks leading up to his death,
00:59:37Mark had been receiving anonymous threatening phone calls.
00:59:42Someone knew he had that watch and they were after it.
00:59:45Mark had a dilemma on his hands.
00:59:48There was no way that he was going to give up his family's namesake.
00:59:52But he knew keeping it would make him a target.
00:59:56So, he came to me.
00:59:58And we figured out the solution.
01:00:00Something.
01:00:01You see, I have a counterfeiting friend in Houston,
01:00:03so I knew I could get a super fake.
01:00:08Of course, we couldn't just FedEx the real watch to this guy.
01:00:11So, we had to measure it and picture it right down to the last detail so that he could machine
01:00:16it.
01:00:17And we didn't have a lot of time.
01:00:19And we had to keep her secret.
01:00:21Yes.
01:00:22As careful as we were though.
01:00:24Yeah, it's this one.
01:00:24Someone followed Mark.
01:00:27You go. Go.
01:00:34Coby County Sheriff's Department, hands up!
01:00:36Okay.
01:00:42Lucky for us though, they didn't figure out what we were doing.
01:00:45But Mark was arrested.
01:00:47For running a gambling ring.
01:00:50According to what we read on the arrest report.
01:00:53So, Sheriff Barnes was in on it.
01:00:56After he was released, Mark became even more determined.
01:01:01We had to finish that replica fast.
01:01:04The day it was done, I did a ten hour round trip to pick it up.
01:01:08I got back late.
01:01:09I called him and he told me to meet him in the park.
01:01:21You had it?
01:01:30I think Mark was paranoid that he was being followed.
01:01:44That...
01:01:46was the last night I saw Mark alive.
01:01:50And whoever he ran into on his way home that night...
01:01:54was the one who killed him.
01:01:56Did Mark ever tell you who it was that was after him?
01:02:00Didn't tell me.
01:02:01And I didn't ask.
01:02:03If the Sheriff was involved, I didn't want to know.
01:02:06I'm psyched.
01:02:08You don't have to be a rocket scholar to see that his sister was too.
01:02:12Mark always used to say people assumed he was the black sheep.
01:02:17But really, it was her.
01:02:20Mark spent his whole life getting into trouble to keep her out of it.
01:02:27Why do you suppose his granddad gave him the watch and not her?
01:02:36We scoured every registry, auction house, community sales listing in the past ten years.
01:02:41Nothing.
01:02:42If the watch is out there, it means it's deep underground.
01:02:45Probably sold illegally.
01:02:46Down the black market.
01:02:48You should be looking for someone who came into a lot of money.
01:02:51But still had to find a way to launder it.
01:02:53Any guesses?
01:02:56Jane had a very expensive mayoral campaign to pay for.
01:03:00The Sheriff was riding her coattails.
01:03:02You know, Maria said that Jane was the only other person who knew about the watch.
01:03:07Her brother got the extremely valuable family heirloom.
01:03:11She got nothing.
01:03:13So, as mayor, she'd probably have the power to pull all the strings.
01:03:19Have Mark framed?
01:03:20Lean on Barnes to alter police reports?
01:03:24Get her brother out of the way so she can get the watch.
01:03:26But how does that translate to what's happening now?
01:03:29You getting pushed in the ravine, your phone getting cloned, your car getting bugged.
01:03:34Jane did all that too?
01:03:38Why not?
01:03:39She knows I'm investigating the case.
01:03:42And she has the most to lose if any new evidence comes to light.
01:03:47Jake, you know Jane the best of any of us.
01:03:50Do you think that it's possible?
01:03:53Yeah, I believe it.
01:03:54There's always something about it in trust.
01:03:57It's the gut feeling.
01:03:59It's the real reason that I ended the relationship.
01:04:04I think we have our prime suspect.
01:04:07Jane Ravel.
01:04:09Here's the problem though.
01:04:11If Jane is guilty, she spent the last ten years covering her tracks, not getting caught.
01:04:18We don't have enough solid evidence to charge her.
01:04:20So what does solid evidence look like?
01:04:22A confession?
01:04:23On the record.
01:04:25Which means someone has to wear a wire.
01:04:31I'll do it.
01:04:34She asked me to let her know if Ainsley found any new information on the case.
01:04:38So I will call her, set up a meeting and I'll try and get her to talk.
01:04:42If she's going to spill her guts to anyone, it's going to be me.
01:04:49Perfect.
01:04:50Whoa, whoa, no, no.
01:04:52Not perfect.
01:04:54I've got to get a warrant for starters.
01:04:56Texas is a one party consent state.
01:04:58I'm aware of that professor, but if we want the evidence to hold up in court, I got to get
01:05:02a judicial order.
01:05:03So get it.
01:05:04It's not like ordering a pizza.
01:05:06There are hoops to jump through.
01:05:08Also, I don't know if you two have been paying attention, but we're in Sweet River, not Langley.
01:05:12We don't have the resources or the technology to deal with this kind of thing.
01:05:19I think I know someone who can help.
01:05:27Welly, well, well.
01:05:28I never thought I'd see a day like this.
01:05:31It's me, a Robin Hood of the people, working alongside the Sheriff of Nottingham over there.
01:05:38Mr. Mosby, the Colby County Sheriff's Department appreciates your assistance in this matter.
01:05:43I bet you do, Billy Mac.
01:05:46Rance, you said you wanted to be on the side of the righteous.
01:05:49That's us.
01:05:50If you say so, eh, Mac?
01:05:53Now, would anyone like some kombucha?
01:05:56No.
01:06:01This has a range of half a mile.
01:06:03However, it will have some issues if it has to transmit through brick or cement.
01:06:10We'll be close by.
01:06:12That's good.
01:06:13Billy Mac, does your department have a surveillance van?
01:06:16Well, we have a van.
01:06:18Do you?
01:06:19Yeah, but it's not exactly wired for surveillance.
01:06:21Well, I will look in the back of mine and see what gear I have.
01:06:29All right, I understand why you're A-Mac and Ainsen McGregor, but why am I Billy Mac?
01:06:36Billy Mac.
01:06:37From the song?
01:06:38He's a detective.
01:06:39Steve.
01:06:39In Texas?
01:06:41Steve Miller van?
01:06:44Rance isn't allowed in the van.
01:06:49This can't be officially sanctioned, Deputy Trainee.
01:06:52We don't have enough evidence to bring charges, so this operation does not officially exist.
01:06:57Understood?
01:06:58Understood, boss.
01:07:00Hey, we should come up with a code name.
01:07:03Like, Project Faceless.
01:07:09Because watches have faces, and so do we, but we're incognito.
01:07:14What did I just say?
01:07:16This doesn't officially exist?
01:07:17Right.
01:07:18So the mission does not need a name.
01:07:20What mission?
01:07:25Okay, we're gonna be in a surveillance van outside of Dooley's at 1900 hours tonight.
01:07:30Our confidential informant is Chief Trenton.
01:07:32Now, if we're sloppy and we mess this up, we're all gonna look spectacularly stupid,
01:07:37so let's make sure that doesn't happen.
01:07:41Kevin, there's one more thing I need you to do.
01:07:47I need you to write up an arrest warrant for Dalton Barnes.
01:07:54But Sheriff Barnes?
01:07:55Yeah.
01:07:57On what grounds?
01:07:58Instruction of justice, accessory to murder, falsifying police documents.
01:08:02Do you have enough evidence to charge him?
01:08:05No, but I've got probable cause enough to hold him for 24 hours.
01:08:10I'm on a bus.
01:08:14Of course you have to get him off the street.
01:08:16And I've gotta get to him before Jane does.
01:08:21I sure hope you're sure.
01:08:29Rye, I'm sure that Jane is guilty of something.
01:08:33I just, I don't know that she killed her brother.
01:08:36What?
01:08:37Why would she put the watch on his wrong wrist?
01:08:40I don't know.
01:08:42Maybe she panicked.
01:08:44Ainsley, last chance here.
01:08:47Am I calling this off?
01:08:52No.
01:09:05Are you sure you wanna do this?
01:09:07Yeah.
01:09:09Someone's after you and it's time to put a stop to that.
01:09:35I...
01:09:36Julie!
01:09:37Hey, how you doing chief?
01:09:39I'm all right.
01:09:40Ainsley joining you tonight?
01:09:41No, Ainsley's working.
01:09:42I'm meeting the mayor.
01:09:43Ooh.
01:09:44Well, your usual table's ready.
01:09:47Actually, you know what?
01:09:48I'm gonna change you up tonight.
01:09:49I'm gonna sit over here at the bar.
01:09:50Suit yourself.
01:09:51Mm-hmm.
01:09:52Got some bad news, though.
01:09:54Oh, no.
01:09:55It's been a busy day, Jake.
01:09:56We're all out of brisket.
01:09:57Oh, it's okay.
01:09:58I'm not that hungry.
01:10:00Well, that's not the Jake I know.
01:10:03Is everything okay?
01:10:04Yeah, yeah, it's fine.
01:10:05Just, just some work stuff.
01:10:07Mm-hmm.
01:10:07Well, you know, some days it feels like one wheels off and the axle's dragging.
01:10:13I'm gonna get you two a couple drinks.
01:10:15My pleasure.
01:10:17I'm in.
01:10:19He's talking to himself?
01:10:20Why is he talking to himself?
01:10:22That's a dead giveaway.
01:10:23He's fine.
01:10:24Let him settle in.
01:10:26I talk to myself all the time.
01:10:28It's the only interesting conversation I ever have.
01:10:31Excuse me.
01:10:33Stay frosty, people.
01:10:36I got catty movement.
01:10:38Copy.
01:10:55Condor's landed.
01:10:57We're in business.
01:10:58I told Kevin not to wear that mustache.
01:11:01Really?
01:11:01I told him it looks great.
01:11:03He's like a Wild West Magnum PI.
01:11:12You look good, JT.
01:11:14You get all dressed up just for me.
01:11:16Oh, I suppose I did.
01:11:17I rolled time six.
01:11:20You didn't have any plans with Ainsling tonight?
01:11:23No, no, we don't see each other that much.
01:11:26Really?
01:11:27I thought the two of you were an item.
01:11:29No, no, no, no, it's not that serious.
01:11:32Guess he's settling in.
01:11:35Shall we order?
01:11:38I always get the brisket sandwich.
01:11:41Me too.
01:11:41But they're all sold out.
01:11:43What?
01:11:44Yeah.
01:11:45Oh, that is the only reason I come here.
01:11:47Me too.
01:11:51We can go somewhere else if you like.
01:11:52What is he doing?
01:11:55Nah, we're already here.
01:11:56I'll get the fajitas.
01:11:58Okay.
01:11:59He's playing it cool.
01:12:01You should try it sometime.
01:12:09Cheers.
01:12:13Mmm.
01:12:15So, you said Ainsley had some new info about Mark's death?
01:12:20Yeah, I'm not sure if you heard or not, but Sheriff Barnes was arrested a couple hours ago.
01:12:26I did hear that.
01:12:28Yeah, I called the station to get an official statement, but they still mauled me.
01:12:31You know anything about it?
01:12:33I overheard Ainsley talking to Ryan.
01:12:37Apparently Barnes told them that your brother's death had something to do with a watch that he owned.
01:12:44My grandfather's watch?
01:12:47Yeah.
01:12:48Now Barnes said that you were after it.
01:12:51You forced him to do all sorts of things to coerce Mark into giving it to you.
01:12:55Like what?
01:12:57Altering the police reports?
01:12:59Uh, y-yes.
01:13:00Yeah, that, um...
01:13:02But also abusing your position of power for your own financial gain.
01:13:05Okay, that's rich.
01:13:07Coming from Barnes.
01:13:10Jane, you know what?
01:13:10I-I don't want to get in the middle of this.
01:13:12Too late. Tell me what he said.
01:13:17Uh, well Barnes, he, um...
01:13:21He said that you-you killed Mark to get the watch.
01:13:26My own brother.
01:13:28I'm just-I'm just telling you what I heard.
01:13:29Look, I wanted that watch. I deserved that watch.
01:13:34Mark wouldn't give it to me, so I needed to find a way to get it from him.
01:13:38And is that why you had him arrested at the pawn shop that night?
01:13:41Absolutely right it is.
01:13:43That watch was my family heirloom, too.
01:13:46And I needed it more than he did.
01:13:48Oh, come on, Jake. Deliver the knockout punch!
01:13:53Hey.
01:13:55Everyone knows what he was like.
01:13:58There's part of me that wouldn't have even blamed you if you-
01:14:00If what?
01:14:01If I killed him?
01:14:04You know, I-I don't think that we should talk about this anymore.
01:14:08I am no killer.
01:14:09Why?
01:14:11Sure.
01:14:11I set up Burns that night to get that watch, but I'm not a murderer.
01:14:15What?
01:14:21That's actionable.
01:14:22Patrol deputies move in.
01:14:23I, uh, I'm just gonna go use the ladies' room.
01:14:27Of course.
01:14:29She's gonna rabbit.
01:14:31Rabbit?
01:14:39She's running.
01:14:40Suspect's on the move!
01:14:48Stop!
01:14:49Mayor!
01:14:53Mayor Raval!
01:15:01You're under arrest.
01:15:04You have the right to remain silent.
01:15:06Anything you say now can and will be used against you in the court of law.
01:15:09You have the right to speak to a lawyer for advice before we ask you any questions.
01:15:13Take her away.
01:15:25Mayor Raval, you're aware of the charges being laid against you?
01:15:30Lawyer.
01:15:33I know that you know your rights, you're not required to say anything at this time, but in the event
01:15:38that you'd like to add anything to your testimony voluntarily, I'll take those statements now.
01:15:44Lawyer.
01:15:47There's nothing else you want to say?
01:15:50Lawyer.
01:15:53Yeah.
01:15:54You got that.
01:15:57Alrighty.
01:16:00I didn't kill my brother, Ryan.
01:16:06Mark was meeting Barnes the night of his death.
01:16:09Barnes was getting greedy.
01:16:11He came to my house earlier that day and we had a screaming match about the whole plan.
01:16:15I told him.
01:16:16I changed my mind that he shouldn't go and meet Mark, but he wouldn't listen to me.
01:16:21Is there anybody who can corroborate this?
01:16:26My children's nanny, Philippa, overheard the whole exchange.
01:16:30I remember because she wanted to call the cops without realizing how ironic that was.
01:16:38Do you believe her?
01:16:40Yeah.
01:16:41It doesn't matter. We have her on the other charges, even if this Philippa the nanny person surfaces.
01:16:48Wait. Do you know the nickname for Philippa?
01:16:50Phil?
01:16:52Pippa.
01:16:53Who?
01:16:54Pippa was Maria's babysitter. She was at the house the night of Mark's death.
01:16:59And she also said she worked for Maria's sister-in-law, Jane.
01:17:03So she would have knowledge of the going-ons in both households.
01:17:07She knew about the watch.
01:17:08And she knew about the plan to steal it.
01:17:12How would you two like to do another unofficial watch gate sting?
01:17:16No.
01:17:16Yes.
01:17:18Ugh.
01:17:20There's a fake watch?
01:17:22Yes.
01:17:25But...
01:17:26But there definitely was a real watch.
01:17:29Who has my husband's watch?
01:17:32I don't know.
01:17:33And I don't have time to try to figure it out.
01:17:37I need you to come with me and just go along with whatever happens, okay?
01:17:48Hi.
01:17:50Hi.
01:17:55Hi.
01:17:56I just can't believe that Jane has been hanging on to the real watch for all these years.
01:18:01Jane?
01:18:02Right.
01:18:03Jane, it's unbelievable.
01:18:05Well, I'm glad she finally came clean.
01:18:08And the most important part is the watch is back where it belongs.
01:18:11And you're safe.
01:18:13I'm so glad you got Mark's watch back.
01:18:16Tell the world why don't you?
01:18:18You just keep that thing safe, you hear?
01:18:21I will.
01:18:24Y'all ready for book club?
01:18:26Wouldn't miss it.
01:18:27I'll be there.
01:18:29The bell's on.
01:18:34Could you please tell me what's going on?
01:18:37Hold on. Hold on. Wait.
01:18:38Me two.
01:18:39Me three.
01:18:41What was with that text you sent us?
01:18:43Do you know where the real watch is?
01:18:45No.
01:18:47But I think I know who the true killer is.
01:19:07No.
01:19:10Surprise.
01:19:12It's over, Pippa.
01:19:22You saw Mark take the watch out of the safe that night.
01:19:26Honey, what's going on?
01:19:28It's gonna be okay.
01:19:29It's gonna be okay.
01:19:32You knew some kind of transaction was about to happen because you overheard Jane and Barnes arguing earlier.
01:19:39So you followed Mark.
01:19:43It took me a while to find him.
01:19:45He'd had a significant head start.
01:19:47When I finally caught up to him, he was on the path by the river.
01:20:03Please!
01:20:04What the hell?
01:20:04Please!
01:20:09Why are you here?
01:20:13give me the watch
01:20:17don't do this
01:20:19you don't understand what's happening here
01:20:21give it to me
01:20:22it's a fake
01:20:25look
01:20:29it's a fake
01:20:32don't get mixed up in this please
01:20:35just go home
01:20:36okay
01:20:39go home
01:20:42don't go please
01:20:50there just wasn't time
01:20:52than gone home
01:20:54what happened next
01:20:59I had the watch
01:21:00I knew where the rendezvous point
01:21:02was with Barnes
01:21:03so I went there
01:21:06Barnes had brought his fence
01:21:09the guy who was going to
01:21:12sell it for him
01:21:15Barnes was surprised to see me
01:21:16but he didn't care
01:21:22the guy took a long look at the watch
01:21:24and finally said
01:21:26and finally said that it was a fake
01:21:30before Barnes took off
01:21:31he told me that he'd kill me
01:21:32if I ever told anyone about his involvement
01:21:37so there I was
01:21:39alone
01:21:41I panicked
01:21:42I panicked
01:21:43and thought of the only thing I could do
01:21:44to not get caught
01:21:56I was going to kill it
01:22:06but it was like
01:22:06I could do it
01:22:06I can't ads
01:22:13I'll be like
01:22:14to señor
01:22:14as an actor
01:22:14and inCheก
01:22:14but I think if it were
01:22:15to me
01:22:15leave me
01:22:15I could have
01:22:17I did everything I could to make sure there was no evidence I was ever there.
01:22:20But you also knew that with Sheriff Barnes and the mayor's involvement, this would get swept under the rug.
01:22:28And it was.
01:22:31Until I came along.
01:22:37So it was you who cloned my phone.
01:22:41And there we go.
01:22:44And bugged my car.
01:22:48Need some help?
01:22:51I am so sorry, I didn't mean to scare you.
01:22:55What about the park?
01:22:59I heard you were going there with the watch.
01:23:01I didn't want you to find out it was a fake.
01:23:06I tried to scare you off the case.
01:23:09Scare me off? Oh, I think you tried to do a lot more than that.
01:23:12Why would you do this, Pippa?
01:23:14We treated you like family.
01:23:16Because she's a thief.
01:23:18What do you think all that designer stuff is that she's selling?
01:23:21It's all stolen.
01:23:34Thank you, Ainsley.
01:23:36This case never would have been solved without you.
01:23:39You never give up.
01:23:43It's a blessing and a curse.
01:23:47The one mystery we never solved was where the real watch is.
01:23:53I guess that'll stay buried with my love.
01:24:01Buried?
01:24:06Maria, what's this?
01:24:07It was in the safe.
01:24:09Oh, that's a poem Mark read to me the day he proposed.
01:24:14I shall bury my weary love beneath a tree
01:24:17in the forest tall and black where no one can see.
01:24:22And you said that Mark proposed to you at the willow tree?
01:24:26Mm-hmm.
01:24:27By the lagoon at the forest's edge.
01:24:48Did she hit something?
01:24:49Yeah.
01:24:50There you go.
01:25:17That poem was a message Mark wanted you to know.
01:25:21You don't find it.
01:25:23Nobody else but his one true love should have it.
01:25:27Please.
