01:37now i'm bringing that spirit of investigation to the world's strangest sounds and images
01:42it's coming towards us we'll analyze each one with top experts
01:46it's a credible case it's a credible video and pass a verdict on what it is this video is clearly
01:54faked the proof starts now
02:04good evening and welcome to the proof is out there roswell new mexico went down in ufo history in 1947
02:11when the u.s military allegedly recovered a flying saucer that crashed there that case has been
02:18debated for decades but did you know another flying saucer was caught on film 20 years later
02:24in the very same state it's march 1967 in las cruces new mexico about 150 miles as the crow flies
02:35from roswell an unnamed student from new mexico state university is photographing land formations
02:41for his geology class when he spots something unusual about 500 yards away
02:46he aims his 4x5 camera across the landscape and snaps this
02:51the photo centers on a round metallic object which appears to hover just above a low hill
02:58between two rock cracks to this day the photo is revered as one of the classic snapshots of a
03:05flying saucer in this case rotated on its side the united states had recently been a hotbed for ufo
03:13sightings and for new mexico it all began with one history making headline rave which stands for
03:21roswell army airfield captures flying saucer on ranch in roswell region and flying saucer sightings took
03:29the country by storm between 1947 and 1960 an estimated 6500 sightings of ufos were registered
03:38some were photographed like this one in new jersey in 1952 and this one over germany in 1954 but most
03:46weren't and it's possible a lot of sightings were just people being influenced by all the press
03:52and then a funny thing happened people mostly stopped seeing ufos in the shape of flying saucers
03:58by the 60s oval shaped ufos began to be reported and in the decade since people have seen triangles
04:05orbs and even cigars the diversification of ufo shapes has been increasing ever since but why
04:13some people believe that the different types of ufos are actually from different alien civilizations
04:19that's what makes this photo a flying saucer sighting years after flying saucers fell out of
04:24fashion especially intriguing this photo was taken in 1967 seven years after that big craze died
04:32which has some people wondering could it be more credible because it was after all of the sightings
04:38and after the big ufo craze ended with all these different ufo shapes some have even suggested
04:46these are simply trends of alien spacecraft design similar to the way our cars have changed style over
04:53the decades but is this 1960s saucer the real deal our experts dish out some insight
05:05whenever we see a ufo photo this good we first need to consider if it's too good to be true
05:11what's
05:12interesting about this photo is the directionality of light so using one of our tools we're able to
05:19kind of demonstrate the consistencies and inconsistencies in the shadows the sunlight
05:25appears to strike the scene from the upper left casting shadows to the lower right so we'd expect to
05:32find the ufo's shadow on the ground right about here but we're not sure this is it some people have
05:41suggested that you can actually see the shadow of the object but i'm familiar with the landscape in
05:46new mexico and these are just creosote bushes that grow everywhere in the desert so although what's
05:52depicted appears to be genuine in this digital version the authenticity is considered inconclusive
05:56could that missing shadow indicate that the ufo is farther away maybe something large floating beyond
06:04this hill it doesn't make sense when you look at this object why it's got this fuzziness down here
06:11and it looks very much like it's in the wrong focal plane it looks like the focal plane is farther
06:20toward these rocks which are in focus and closer objects are going to be a little out of focus
06:26that means this ufo isn't something far away and large it's something close and small but what
06:33let's assume it was a thrown object what was it well that looks remarkably like a hubcap to me
06:40and if so that would be silver which is consistent with the reflections off of this compared to
06:47reflections elsewhere the issues with shadows have us leaning hard into hoax but only thing is our
06:54experts aren't sure how they did it it's very difficult like if you had a pie plate and you
06:59wanted to throw it in the air and get a good photograph of it you're going to see more signs
07:04of a blur because of the movement that it's doing
07:13our verdict unexplained hoax much like this alleged ufo we are up in the air it could be a thrown
07:21hubcap
07:21captured at just the right moment or it could be the work of a pro either way we doubt it's
07:27the real
07:27deal so if you know anything about this photo that we haven't mentioned please let us know
07:34we investigate plenty of tall tales on this show but with reported sightings of goblins gremlins and
07:41fairies we have our fair share of little legends too just take a look at this
07:50march 2023 huasca diocompo mexico just northwest of mexico city mayor francisco flores calls a press
08:00conference standing alongside two men he announces that these workers have made a stunning discovery
08:06in one of the warehouses in the town this it's a decomposed creature that appears to be about 10 to
08:1412
08:14inches in length and its present condition suggests that it's been dead for some time take a closer
08:21look this creature seems to have a humanoid shaped head with two arms two legs a tail and those ears
08:31they almost look kind of pointed what is this thing the mayor publicly declares that this could be the
08:40fetus of a goblin-like creature from latin american lore a duende is a local legend duende translates
08:49in spanish to something like dwarf or goblin usually described as small creatures maybe a half a meter
08:56tall with pointed ears kind of human-like but definitely not human in any sort of way they're
09:02mischievous they're gonna play pranks on you they can kidnap children you just don't want them around
09:08however just like the mischievous gremlins and fairies of european lore duendes can also be
09:16helpful to humans one of the most famous duende stories happened in the colombian rainforest when a
09:22plane crashed in 2023 four children went missing ranging in age from 11 months old to 13 years old
09:30authorities feared the worst as the small children remained missing for 40 days inside a jungle filled
09:37with jaguars snakes and armed drug smugglers they enlisted a local shaman who drank yage and while he
09:46was in his hallucinogenic trance he saw visions of a duende who negotiated for the return of the children
09:54and within a few days the children come out of the jungle back to the village how did they survive
10:00in
10:01the colombian rainforest for a month it makes sense this creature was found specifically in huasca de
10:08ocampo as that town is officially recognized by the mexican government for its rich tradition of
10:14supernatural entities could it be that goblins are lurking in the vicinity of this small mexican town
10:24duende seem to be popping up all over in another episode we investigated the supposed duende hanging
10:30out in a tree in costa rica we determined that one was just a misidentified bird but what about this
10:38one
10:43here's the problem even if we take legends of the wind day literally this specimen doesn't match up
10:50they're described as being short human-like creatures that have wide owl eyes we don't see
10:57big owl eyes and what catches my eye is this long tail humans do not have tails we do have
11:05a sacrament of
11:06coccyx which is our tailbone and thought to be the remnants of tails from our ancestors but no human has
11:15a tail
11:15tailbone that long in addition we can look at the hands humans have fingers that separate i think these
11:23look like paws more than they look like hands and i don't see evidence of an opposable thumb and as
11:29far as
11:30the arms themselves the distinctive anatomy of that hind leg is in full concert with the anatomy
11:39of the upper extremity so these are legs rather than arms they provide support rather than manual
11:47dexterity that's an important clue along with the round oversized head both humans and other animals are
11:55born with head sizes that are larger in proportion to the rest of the body this is because the brain
12:02grows much quicker than the rest of the body so this structure to me looks much more like what we
12:09would
12:09expect in a animal like a cat or a dog this is almost certainly just a poor kitten that died
12:18perished
12:18and and now was found after it was quite desiccated dried out and virtually mummified
12:29our verdict this is most definitely the remains of an unfortunate kitten it would seem there could
12:36have been some monetary motivation behind this misidentification you see this town is actually
12:41famous for a museum dedicated to duendes that could explain why the mayor himself held a press conference
12:48over this little critter and even placed it on display in the museum in movies like close
12:55encounters of the third kind or independence day our first contact with aliens seems to be with
13:02scout craft that come to check us out and then report back to a larger mothership could that idea be
13:09based on reality it's january 13 2024 in charlotte north carolina after an evening hike with her husband
13:19artist kate vasoor is returning home when something catches her eye in the night sky i saw this orb kind
13:27of in the sky it was just white and it descended towards earth and as quickly as it came it
13:35just shot
13:35back up and then went away then all of a sudden just saw all these lights and they were just
13:41kind
13:42of hovering there kate takes out her phone and captures this oh my god peter a bar of shimmering
13:50lights floats idly in the air behind some trees each light appears to be glowing in different colors
13:57and patterns but the entire shape seems to gain speed as it moves across the sky it was the weirdest
14:04thing we just looked at each other and just couldn't believe what we had just seen but as it
14:09turns out kate isn't the first in her area to experience such a sighting in early 2021 residents
14:17reported seeing a string of lights in the sky many people posted their photos and videos and a lot of
14:24them looked a lot like kate's video this photo shows one large light with other small ones
14:31that's important because remember before kate took the main video we're talking about she saw a smaller
14:38light shoot into the sky and disappear what does it mean all of this taken together kind of sounds like
14:45the typical ufo sighting of a mother ship this is a ufo form where there's kind of a base ship
14:50and it
14:51will release or have other smaller craft that go away from it and then come back if the whole idea
14:57sounds too much like science fiction keep in mind that actual scientists are giving it serious thought
15:03in 2023 harvard astrophysicist avi loeb and former pentagon physicist sean kirk patrick co-authored a
15:12paper which reasoned that an artificial interstellar object could potentially be a parent craft that
15:19releases many small probes during its close passage to earth is what we see in charlotte some sort of
15:25dispatch point where motherships release and recapture their probes there's no obvious explanation
15:32of what it is so what are these lights and why do they seemingly keep showing up in charlotte
15:42here's a copy of that paper written by avi loeb and sean kirk patrick in it they speculate that the
15:48mothership might send probes to earth for the purpose of scientific exploration
15:52so did kate witness one of these motherships and its exploratory probe
16:03first we ask if this could be some kind of drone like the late 2024 sightings that plagued new jersey
16:12you can see that it's making a slow movement kind of like a straight line then you have it slowly
16:18making it what appears to be a turn it's actually angling up those lights as if it were banking
16:25that's not how drones maneuver through the atmosphere the object also appears to be moving steadily no
16:33signs of instantaneous acceleration like that made by famous ufos like the 2004 nimitz tic tac
16:42this is making banking turns moving slowly across the sky we're not seeing a change in direction we're
16:49not seeing instantaneous acceleration we're not seeing anything of that nature then what are we
16:54seeing the key clue may be not in the motion of the lights but their color if you notice as
17:00it flies
17:01through once in a while you're going to see the red light showing through you saw through the trees
17:06there all right there it is again you see it there what are those well in the faa mandated lighting
17:13manual for aircraft the left side of your plane is going to have the red light on it and the
17:17right
17:17side is going to have a green light we also have a belly strobe on the bottom adding up the
17:22lights and
17:23how they are moving it seems this is no mystery at all this has all the appearance of being an
17:30aircraft
17:30coming in for an approach making banking turns moving slowly across the sky it's that banking angle that
17:38makes the spacing of the lights look unfamiliar and therefore less easily identifiable as the shape of a
17:45commercial aircraft the bottom line is i think this is a plane on approach to charlotte airport
17:55our verdict this is just a commercial airplane but admittedly there is still the mystery of the bright orb
18:03kate says she witnessed before she started filming we'll keep chasing down clues ourselves and let you know if
18:10we get any updates genetic mutations are crucial to the evolutionary process they help species develop new traits
18:19and adapt to changing environments but sometimes those mutations go wrong horribly wrong and when people

18:34it's a normal day on this small farm in sultan kudarat in the philippines farm owner josephine rapique
18:41is preparing to help one of her livestock give birth as she's done many times before
18:46but when she performs a cesarean section on a goat pregnant with twins she finds this
18:53while one twin appears perfectly normal the other is anything but
18:58it's larger and more rotund with pale skin and a waxy reflective sheen all over its body
19:05the hairless animal even appears to have a naval just like a tiny human
19:11take a closer look despite being birthed by a goat its large puffy face and snout
19:17have both the media and online spectators calling this a strange hybrid
19:22that's half animal and half human
19:26people come from all over the place to come look at this what is the creature
19:30no one has ever seen anything like this
19:33and people come up with all sorts of far-fetched ideas as to what this thing could be
19:38there are a number of states around the u.s. that have legends of a terrifying goat man
19:43one in maryland says that a local scientist transformed himself into a terrifying hybrid creature
19:49after a dna experiment gone wrong
19:51and now he stalks the woods and attacks anyone unlucky enough to cross his path
19:56as far out as that probably is there was a verified attempt to create a human animal hybrid
20:03in the 1920s there actually was a russian and soviet biologist by the name of ilya Ivanov
20:10and he was quite a successful scientist but he also became obsessed with something rather gross
20:18which was he thought that there should be a human ape hybrid
20:22so he tried to inseminate chimpanzees and orangutans
20:28fortunately none of these animals became pregnant
20:32today scientists are experimenting with growing organs in animals that can be used for human organ transplants
20:39and beyond the lab there are some interspecies hybrids that have occurred naturally
20:44there have been polar bear grizzly hybrids called isleys and there's even a zonkey which is a zebra donkey
20:52is this just an accident is this just happenstance i don't know but we are seeing it more regularly in
20:59the natural world
21:03the chimera was a legendary monster with the head of a lion the tail of a snake and the body
21:09of a goat
21:10but chimera also refers to real life organisms that contain two different sets of dna
21:15it can even happen in humans potentially causing two different eye colors two different skin tones
21:21even two different blood types but let's see what our experts think about this potential genetic anomaly
21:32is it possible that this creature is a half human hybrid
21:37now while this animal might look a little bit human in appearance i think it's really important to note
21:42that humans cannot crossbreed with goats it's just not genetically possible
21:47even though they're both mammals there's a big genetic distance between them
21:51but wait a minute we know that it's possible for some species to interbreed
21:55wolves and dogs lions and tigers and horses and donkeys
22:01those species are already genetically really similar to each other
22:05humans and their closest relatives like chimpanzees share almost 99% of the same dna
22:13but even then we could not crossbreed
22:16then could this be some type of genetic experiment gone awry
22:20i highly doubt this is a genetic experiment
22:24genetic work conducted by scientists is typically conducted in a controlled lab setting
22:29this is a filipino farm it's not where you would expect to see genetic experimentation
22:36then the question remains what exactly are we looking at here
22:40to me this appears to be some sort of weird birth defect
22:46it has siblings right next to it that came out unaffected
22:49whereas that one something is obviously very off
22:53it's really bizarre looking even in my years of experience i've never seen anything that looks like this
23:03our verdict we agree with our experts that this is neither the work of bad science nor the devil
23:09just some sort of birth defect that we can't identify
23:13and as far as we can tell recent sightings of the maryland goat man have been few and far between
23:18but folks still think he's out there somewhere
23:23the stanley hotel in colorado is known for inspiring the overlook hotel
23:29in stephen king's classic novel the shining and for good reason
23:33ghost encounters have been reported there for decades
23:36everything from shadowy figures and disembodied voices
23:39to what was captured in the photo you're about to see
23:44november 21st 2009 estes park colorado
23:48chrissy head is staying at the stanley hotel for a wedding
23:52while taking a hotel tour she passes a friend sitting in a hallway
23:57and stops to take a picture
24:01on a first look there's nothing out of the ordinary here
24:04chrissy's friend is sitting on the left
24:06but just take a look to the right
24:11behind the woman walking toward the camera is the spectral outline of another woman
24:16seemingly turning the corner
24:18you can see what looks to be a face hair and an arm
24:23she also appears to be wearing a long dress
24:26but the thing is during an interview with a paranormal investigator
24:30chrissy says that ghostly woman was not there
24:34i don't remember anybody else coming around the corner
24:37but it's really clear to me i see the outline of a woman's body
24:41and i think i noticed it when we were going back through photos
24:47later that night on my camera
24:51that ghostly female figure is just the latest potentially paranormal encounter
24:56in the long and eerie history of the stanley hotel
25:00since its opening in 1909
25:04multiple guests have reported ghostly phenomena such as cold spots in the rooms
25:10a feeling like they get poked or shoved by some sort of unseen figure
25:15but the hotel's most well-known paranormal story
25:19involved perhaps its most famous guest stephen king
25:23when stephen king and his wife tabitha stayed at the stanley
25:27the hotel was being closed up for the winter season
25:30they were the only guests that night in the dining room
25:34and if that weren't creepy enough
25:36stephen had a nightmare that night in room 217
25:40which involved a fire hose that was coiled up in the corridor outside his room
25:46uncoiling itself and chasing after his five-year-old son
25:50events that you'll see in the shining
25:53king's nightmare was not the only paranormal event to take place in room 217
26:00residents and guests have reported seeing the ghost of Elizabeth Wilson
26:07the chambermaid who was blown from the second to the first floor by an explosion
26:15in that room in 1911
26:21ghost hunters try to detect spirits with an emf meter
26:25it measures fluctuations in the surrounding electromagnetic field
26:29the theory being that spirits might be made from electromagnetic energy
26:34or interact with these fields in some way
26:38but can a ghost be captured in photographs
26:41let's see what our experts say
26:48first
26:48how can we explain our mystery figure in the hallway
26:52for one thing we can take a closer look
26:56there's a number of other things going on in this image
26:59we see in the background
27:00these lights are all kind of blurred and they're stretched out
27:03and this mirror which is stretched out in this direction
27:06so everything is smeared in that direction
27:08probably because of motion of the camera
27:10because it's flash plus a slightly longer exposure
27:13in other words objects in the foreground
27:16that are closer to the camera's flash
27:17like Chrissy's friend appear sharp
27:20but objects farther away from the flash
27:23like this woman walking toward the camera get blurred
27:26especially if the camera moved
27:29we see here this woman's head has a shadow behind it
27:32kind of a dark shadow
27:33kind of also stretched out in that direction
27:36which makes you think that
27:37is this perhaps an actual dress
27:40or could it be just kind of the shadow of her sweatshirt here
27:45and if we look down here
27:47her leg actually kind of matches with her hand here
27:50on the edge of her shorts here
27:52so is this actually a ghostly leg
27:55or is this just a little bit of a camera artifact
27:57from the motion of the camera and her hand
28:00the most likely thing to me is
28:02that it's just an artifact of the camera
28:05and it just happens to look like a person
28:08there's another issue with the ghost theory
28:11Chrissy said she didn't see it
28:13when she took the photo in the hall
28:14that suggests the apparition is invisible
28:18so how could any camera capture it on film
28:20if an object is truly transparent
28:24you can't actually photograph it
28:26you need light to bounce off of it
28:28and enter the device you're using
28:31to capture an image of that
28:34there's just too much blurriness in this photo
28:38due to a lack of focus due to motion
28:41either of the individuals being photographed
28:43the camera itself or both
28:45I think that all of these much more mundane explanations
28:49make it so that we don't need to jump
28:53to any paranormal explanation here
29:01Our verdict, camera distortion
29:03we agree with Mick West
29:05no ghosts here
29:07just a person distorted by motion, distance and the lighting
29:10but if anyone out there is planning a stay at the Stanley anytime soon
29:15a word of advice
29:16if you scare easy
29:17avoid room 217
29:21the line between legend and history
29:24often gets blurred over time
29:26stories get embellished
29:28documentation gets lost
29:30but sometimes researchers make a find
29:32that proves a myth might be real
29:34and in this case
29:36the proof was found at the bottom of a well
29:411938 Sverisborg Castle in central Norway
29:44a team of archaeologists is excavating a well
29:47on the grounds of this 12th century landmark
29:50the first medieval castle in Norway
29:52digging down through layers of stone
29:54there are more than 20 feet underground
29:56when they suddenly find this
29:58a partial skeleton is embedded in the mud
30:02a closer look reveals a torso and spine
30:05with most of the ribcage still visible
30:08along with one of the hip bones
30:10but before any serious study can be done
30:14World War II interrupts
30:16nearly 80 years later
30:18a new excavation turns up more bones
30:21including a left hand and a skull
30:25we could see on the skull that there is a heavy trauma
30:29on the back right side
30:31it was fresh when he fell in or was thrown into the well
30:35but we can't say for certain what actually killed him
30:39Now this story takes a really cool twist
30:42because in this case what science can't answer
30:45local legend can
30:47almost immediately they connect these bones with a story
30:52from a book called Sveris Saga
30:55which is about King Sveri in Norway from the 12th century
31:00it discusses all of his wars, his battles, his heroic speeches
31:06Among the tales from this text
31:09is a rival clan's siege on the Sveris Borg castle
31:13in the year 1197
31:14There's one line in the saga
31:17where it says
31:18they took a guy who was already dead
31:21and threw him in the well
31:23and covered him with rocks
31:25Some people don't buy that he was already dead
31:28An even weirder theory
31:30is that something in the well killed him
31:33a troll called a bronze man
31:35said to live in wells
31:37The bronze man often carries a crook
31:40so if a child
31:42or maybe even an adult
31:44is leaning too far over the well
31:46they'll take the crook
31:48and pull them into the well
31:49so that they die
31:51Legends are generally based upon
31:53the fears of the populace
31:54and there are cases where
31:56you know
31:57people fall into wells
31:59and die
31:59so could this be proof that the legends were true?
32:05This would not be the first medieval legend
32:08to have a shred of truth
32:10Some claim that Merlin
32:11the famous wizard of authorian legend
32:14is based in part on the medieval Welsh poet
32:17and prophet Merthen the Wild
32:19Could our well man legend
32:21also be based in reality?
32:23Let's ask our experts
32:29First, could our well man
32:31have been a victim of the well-dwelling monster
32:34known as the bronze man?
32:36The issue there
32:37is that if the bronze man had really existed
32:39it would have made life almost unlivable for everybody
32:43If you do not have a pure water source
32:46it would be extremely difficult
32:48in these times
32:50you're not going to survive
32:51because everything depends on it
32:53your crops, your animals, the people
32:55So I think the broad man is more or less used to like
33:00scare children from hanging around wells
33:03So could our well man be the dead body mentioned in the Spheris saga?
33:08The skeleton does come from about 900 years ago
33:12just when that saga was written
33:13and we've done DNA studies on the skeleton
33:17which do show that this person was of Danish descent
33:21with blonde hair, blue eyes
33:24the DNA shows that he was part of the invading force
33:29who came from another area some distance away
33:33In other words, the forensic findings confirm the line from the Spheris saga
33:38about a man from a rival clan being tossed into a well
33:42during the siege on King Spheris' castle
33:45But why would anybody do this?
33:47According to the text of the Spheris saga
33:49it was a grisly but effective war tactic
33:52and the evidence matches
33:55If this was a person who already died
33:58throwing a body down in the well
33:59would definitely pollute that water
34:03and get the people who were using it sick
34:05and eventually they could invade the keep
34:08That's certainly a cold and mercenary hypothesis
34:12but it's not out of the realm of possibility
34:20Our verdict? True story
34:22The well man is no myth
34:24The forensic examination backs up the story
34:27that's told in the Spheris saga
34:29On this show, we often ask whether the folklore
34:32of ancient or so-called primitive cultures might be real
34:35In this case, the answer is yes
34:41Fish tend to be quiet creatures
34:43but they do communicate in their own way
34:46Using specific movements
34:48they say things to other fish
34:50like this is my coral
34:52or follow me to food
34:53But lately, some fish off the coast of Florida
34:56have been moving very strangely
34:58What are they trying to say?
35:03It's October 6th, 2023 in the Florida Keys
35:07Greg Firstenworth is out for a night dive
35:10when he sees something peculiar in the water
35:14A distressed pinfish is spinning over and over
35:18in upside down circles
35:20I just know that I was recording something odd at the time
35:23and then I decided to ask people around me
35:26if they had ever seen the behavior before
35:28but nobody had any answers
35:30On subsequent dives, Greg observes the same behavior again and again
35:35I was noticing in a vast array of species
35:38my wife and I recorded 78 species that were impacted

35:43From pinfish to mangrove snappers to goliath groupers
35:47These fish aren't just spinning for fun
35:50they're spinning until it kills them
35:52Look at that, that's a baby goliath
35:54That one took about two and a half hours to die in front of me
35:57and that's a protected species
35:59which really set me to this is a serious problem

36:07drawing attention to the deepening marine mystery
36:10Probably of greatest concern is the small tooth sawfish
36:14It's very endangered
36:15and sure enough, just a month after this video was taken
36:19Marine biologists identified over 20 of the small tooth sawfish
36:23had been inflicted by whatever's going on here
36:25What's causing all this?
36:27Some wonder if it could involve some aquatic alien activity
36:32In January 2025, Congressman Tim Burchett actually said
36:37that he believes there are alien bases beneath our oceans
36:40As ridiculous and improbable as that may sound
36:45we as humans have actually been working on creating underwater bases
36:49Currently we have the Aquarius Reef Base
36:52which as a scientist I absolutely love
36:55This was established to host researchers to conduct experiments
36:59and researchers there are referred to as aquanauts
37:02If aliens are also operating underwater
37:05what does that mean for the animals living there?
37:09People are suggesting that perhaps frequencies or other more sinister things
37:13might be affecting fish in the estuaries
37:16Fish have something called a lateral line
37:19So they can feel vibrations
37:21The lateral line is actually what enables fish to school together
37:25because one slight change in one fish is felt on their side
37:29by all the other fish in the school and they can navigate accordingly
37:32That means fish are very much more sensitive to vibrations in their environments
37:39We also know that human craft can harm sea life
37:43For decades research studies have suggested a link between navy sonar and whale beachings
37:49Could something like that be what we're looking at here?
37:52Let's ask the experts
37:58The spinning fish phenomenon is certainly strange
38:01But is it underwater alien based strange?
38:05The Florida Keys are a really populated area
38:07and I would expect if there were something incredibly strange harming animals
38:12we would also see it in things like manatees, birds and even reptiles
38:18This phenomenon, whatever it is, seems to be directly linked to fish
38:24And we can rule out sonar for a similar reason
38:27We would see dozens if not hundreds of animals on the surface of the water
38:32For example, in September of 2002
38:36there was a mass stranding of beaked whales in the Canary Islands
38:39and this was directly tied to sonar activities
38:42Instead, this may tie back to a major marine heat wave
38:47that hit the Florida Keys in summer 2023
38:49In the tidal zone along these areas
38:53water got to above 100 degrees
38:56which is equivalent to a hot tub
38:58and these warm temps can make things like pathogens
39:02and parasites and bacteria and viruses
39:05reproduce even more quickly
39:08Scientists determined there is a higher concentration of dinoflagellates in the water
39:16This species is a single-sealed organism that normally lives on the bottom of the ocean
39:22but warmer temperatures have caused it to go higher up in the water column
39:28and these can produce neurotoxins
39:31That was the consensus, but then something happened
39:34The behavior recurred
39:36This time in places without high levels of dinoflagellates
39:40The reality is there's a lot going on that we don't totally understand
39:46and the only way we're going to be able to 100% define what's going on here
39:52is through molecular sequencing and diagnostics of both the fish and whatever is affecting it
40:03Our verdict? Unexplained
40:05We think toxins can affect fish behavior
40:08but the more recent reports of spinning fish make us question their role here
40:13Meanwhile, the 2004 ban on military sonar surrounding the Canary Islands
40:18led to a major reduction in whale beachings there
40:21Let that be a lesson to all of us
