01:23...and he's getting payback.
01:25What's it they call it in Italian?
01:29Sprezzatora.
01:29The arts of making something difficult and something hard
01:33look really easy and effortless.
01:35There's a bit of that to him this weekend.
01:39Sprezzatora.
01:39He's just carrying speed.
01:41He's really learning how to, with the team, with Bono,
01:45with just really learning how to maximise these new cars
01:48and new power units.
01:50Was it 5 one-hundredths of a second as well?
01:53Separating Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen, Lando Norris
01:57and George Russell.
01:59Wow.
02:00Five minutes to go at this qualifying session.
02:03Good to have a little lull now and just wait for the rest.
02:07Colopinto, by the way, eighth fastest, as you can see.
02:10Isaac Hadjar ahead of Pierre Gasly.
02:12And they're not separated.
02:14Piastri, Colopinto, Hadjar not separated by much either.
02:16I expected the cars to become this close, sort of, in the second half of the season.
02:20I wasn't expecting it by May, to be honest.
02:23But the upgrades have definitely brought Ferrari and Mercedes and Red Bull right into play,
02:30haven't they, with, sorry, Ferrari McLaren and Red Bull into play.
02:34Just looking at the speed traps as well.
02:3712 kph there, Karim.
02:39Lando Norris, 12 kilometres an hour slower in the speed traps.
02:44He was, it was about 13th fastest overall in the speed traps for sprint quality yesterday as well.
02:50It's, it's not always about a straight line here.
02:53You, you, you can kind of, kind of win without being fastest in a straight line.
02:57But maybe McLaren, a little bit too.
03:00Might have put a little bit more downforce on, thinking of a wet race tomorrow.
03:05But as you point out, he was, Lando was only 13th fastest in sprint qualifying down the straight.
03:10Brand new set of boots, of course, then for both McLarens.
03:13Out they go, and the Ferrari will not be able to get his nose in there.
03:17Yeah, doesn't really matter.
03:19They've got plenty of time to get around and start what will be their final lap.
03:25So the second qualifying session of the weekend, producing something of a grandstand finish here.
03:32Lando Norris had snatched that provisional pole position.
03:37Lando Norris, who was on the front row here last year, thought he'd gone one better.
03:42Max Verstappen, who's been on pole for the last two years here, then went and beat him.
03:46And Charles Leclerc, who was on pole for the Miami Grand Prix back in 2022 in the front row a
03:54couple of years ago,
03:54then thought he'd got polled.
03:56And then Kimi Antonelli's like, yeah, I'll have it.
03:58Thank you very much indeed.
04:00That 1.27.7, that's going to take some beating.
04:03Drivers are going to have to push that a little bit more.
04:05They're going to have to take some risks in the braking zones particularly.
04:07But I'll reiterate, if it's a wet race tomorrow, these grid positions are even more important than normal.
04:14Yeah, even last year, I think, when the rain came down for the sprints,
04:20those just behind the safety car were saying,
04:23I can't see the sprays that bad.
04:25Think about six Formula One cars between you and Bert Meierlander and the safety car.
04:30Max Verstappen's going to leave this until right at the last moment.
04:34His teammate Isaac Hadjar is just coming out onto the track now.
04:38Max will be last to set his flying lap.
04:41Let's have a quick look here.
04:42That's the second time this weekend in qualifying that George Russell has nipped ahead of Kimi Antonelli in the pit
04:48lane.
04:48Wow, that was close.
04:51Now, whether it was meant to be like that, I don't know.
04:54But they both came out at the same time.
04:56And George went around the outside and said,
04:58no, sorry, I'd quite like to be ahead of you on the track.
05:00Thank you.
05:01So will Max be able to prepare his tyres as he wants?
05:05And Isaac Hadjar's teammates ahead of him as well
05:08without having to skedaddle out of the way for Russell and Antonelli,
05:12who are now starting their hot laps.
05:15He should be OK.
05:17The last thing he wants to be doing is having to sort of get off the racing line
05:22just towards the end of his preparation lap.
05:24You wonder if the strategy at Red Bull there is that others will have completed their laps
05:28while Max is hit in the back straight.
05:31And they're thinking we might be able to pick up a toe here.
05:33And that could be worth a couple of tenths of a second.
05:37We'll see.
05:39They've started their laps out in front.
05:41Kimi Antonelli and George Russell.
05:44Russell making his way round turn eight.
05:46Antonelli just coming into that long hairpin.
05:49Decent first sector for George Russell.
05:50He's only six one hundredths down.
05:52But can he keep that momentum going through the middle part of the lap?
05:56George Russell, who has, oh, has never qualified in the top five here for a Grand Prix in Miami.
06:02All ten cars then out on track, all on brand new.
06:07Soft compact really hugging the wall through there, which opens the track up nicely for this little section.
06:14And he looked a touch hesitant on his way into that chicane.
06:17Car getting some vertical movement, a little bit of slide at the back.
06:21And when you're sliding sideways, you're not going forward.
06:24So it would cost him a fraction there as well.
06:28And it's a fairly ordinary middle sector for George.
06:31Yeah, ordinary, improving, but not by enough.
06:33But at least he is improving.
06:35Piastri and Norris not improving through the first sector.
06:38Charles Leclerc was.
06:39Piastri has now improved in the middle sector.
06:42Maybe the tie is giving him a bit more grip than he would want.
06:45George Russell stays P5.
06:47His first top five qualifying here in Miami.
06:51Can Oscar Piastri keep his improvement from the middle sector going?
06:55Lando Norris isn't improving.
06:57And neither is Charles Leclerc through the middle part of the lap.
07:00Piastri to the line.
07:02No, seventh fastest.
07:03That is big disappointment for Oscar Piastri.
07:07Only P7 for the Miami Grand Prix.
07:10Lando Norris stays on the second row.
07:12It's one better in terms of rows than he's managed in any Grand Prix this season.
07:16But it is still only fourth fastest for him.
07:19Charles Leclerc next to try and take the fight to Kimi Antonelli.
07:22And he falls down two.
07:25Antonelli is holding on here as one by one, Martin.
07:27They all falter.
07:28And Lewis Hamilton stays P6.
07:30Antonelli locked his tyres up for going into turn one.
07:33He had to bail on that lap.
07:35So this is what it's all about then, isn't it?
07:38The late starting Max Verstappen.
07:41Yeah, timing is everything.
07:43And as he arrived on the scene at exactly the right time, because he's gone fastest in the middle sector,
07:51Max Verstappen.
07:51Now getting the active aero working, rear wing, front wing, dumping all that drag and accelerating that car towards 214
08:01miles an hour.
08:01He was on the power as early as he could to try and get maximum thrust to the line.
08:06Verstappen just falters.
08:08It is Kimi Antonelli on pole position for the third Grand Prix in a row.
08:13The championship leader has held on as one by one they came to challenge and one by one they just
08:22missed out.
08:23I mean, that was an outstanding qualifying, wasn't it?
08:25We've ended up with four different teams, Crofty, in the top four.
08:29This is what we wanted with Formula One and this update packages.
08:33Let's go, man.
08:34Woo!
08:35Ah.
08:37Feels good, man.
08:38Feels good.
08:39Thank you.
08:40Yeah, well done, mate.
08:43He is getting out of the car and you can tell how much he is smiling underneath that crash helmet.
08:48The first teenager to lead the world championship has a hat-trick of pole positions and will start round four
08:57of this season in the place they all want.
09:00It is, well, it is looking good for Kimi Antonelli.
09:03How would he survive the extended break where we missed a couple of races?
09:07The pressure is all on his shoulders.
09:09Pressure?
09:10What pressure?
09:11Yeah, I mean, despite not getting that final lap, he still held on there by a tenth and a half.
09:17He's been outstanding, hasn't he?
09:18Miles ahead of George Russell, really, throughout this weekend.
09:21Russell down in fifth.
09:23He's building some momentum, the teenager, isn't he?
09:26Off the back of that dominant performance in Japan as well.
09:29Oh, he was 18 years and 251 days old when he got pole for the sprint race here last year.
09:37Nice.
09:38Positively ancient by that standards now.
09:41A full year on.
09:42For Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, disappointment maybe at Ferrari.
09:47Leclerc on the second row alongside Lando Norris.
09:51McLaren will be thinking, what's happened there?
09:53Yeah.
09:53They might, well, in the past we'd be saying things like, oh, I wonder if they've made a few changes
10:00with a potential wet race to come tomorrow.
10:03That's where Oscar Piastri lost it.
10:05Yeah, so sector one.
10:06He went fast with anybody, the middle sector, but his sectors one and three weren't good enough.
10:12But you're right, you know, it shows how quickly things have swung, haven't they?
10:17With the change of wind direction, slightly stronger wing.
10:20This was the Antonelli lockup here and then he immediately aborted.
10:24But change of wind direction, slightly more rubber on track, of course, compared to what we had yesterday.
10:30And the momentum has shifted across the grid.
10:32But this is what we were seeing last year and the year before.
10:36You know, there's different, we want to see different people in the fight.
10:40This guy's been outstanding today, hasn't he, Max Verstappen?
10:43Absolutely.
10:44You know, we'll praise the teenager.
10:46We'll praise the experience of Max Verstappen at the age of 28.
10:51Red Bull back in the fray once again.
10:56Do you know what?
10:57I just realized here, Senna, Schumacher, Antonelli have all taken their first three poles in succession.
11:05That is not a bad list of three for Kimi, Antonelli, to now come and join.
11:11McLaren will say, yeah, we have boost issues, we have power unit troubles.
11:15Maybe that coincided with their drop in performance.
11:19Once upon a time, they'd set things up, you know, for a wet race.
11:21But because it's been declared a wet hazard, they can change the ride height for tomorrow anyway.
11:27They all can.
11:28So that's not an excuse.
11:30No.
11:30And maybe it just is the drivers that make the difference.
11:33Yeah, I mean, this is his day, isn't it?
11:37I wonder how well he'll sleep as he thinks about the start that he's made this year.
11:42But I suppose that's for tomorrow.
11:44He's had four difficult launches, let's be honest.
11:48Just because he's lost places in every single start he's made this year, you don't have to mention it now.
11:53Okay, I'll mention it tomorrow.
11:54Well, then shall I let him have this moment?
11:56Do it tomorrow on the Skypad.
11:57But it's a good point, though.
11:58Yeah, and just to finish up on Verstappen-Crafty, you know, in Japan, I was really surprised because Suzuka is
12:05not a circuit where you expect to see Max Verstappen now qualify by teammate.
12:09Isaac Hadjar ended up ahead of him.
12:11And I do wonder, as the Red Bulls got more competitive, whether he's now found another gear.
12:15Martin Brundle found top gear to make his way from the commentary box all the way down into Parc Ferme.
12:21He's grabbed a microphone.
12:23Kimi Antonelli's grabbed a microphone.
12:25We will hear from the top three in the sunshine here in Miami.
12:30And let's hope when those fans come back tomorrow, the sun is still shining.
12:34We're keeping everything cross for that.
12:35Here's Martin and Kimi Antonelli.
12:44Kimi Antonelli, your third consecutive pole position.
12:47You know, Michael Schumacher and Etten Senna got their first three poles consecutively like that.
12:53Championship leader as well.
12:54What a great day for you.
12:56Yeah, it's been an amazing day, you know, to be on pole again.
13:00And, you know, it was obviously a difficult start of the day with the sprint where it didn't go our
13:06way.
13:07But super happy with the recovery.
13:09And, yeah, it was a good quality, you know.
13:12Obviously, got a little bit too excited in that last lap of Q3.
13:16But the first lap was good enough.
13:18And I'm really happy with that.
13:20Yeah, take us through that.
13:21I mean, it looked like an all or nothing attempt to lock the front brakes.
13:25And then you've got to do the rest of that thinking, oh, have I done enough already?
13:29Yeah, I know.
13:30I was very stressed, to be fair, because, you know, I was just waiting for everyone to finish their laps.
13:37But, yeah, you know, at the end, as I said before, it was good enough.
13:41And I'm really happy with that.
13:43Now, I'm sure you've done some magic starts on the simulator.
13:45So there's one coming up tomorrow, I hope for you.
13:48Yeah, hopefully the magic one will happen tomorrow.
13:51You know, it will be nice to not lose any positions.
13:53But, yeah, we'll do our best this week.
13:56And obviously, it's been a little bit more difficult for us.
13:59But, you know, we're keeping all this together and we're maximizing the performance.
14:03So I'm very happy with that.
14:04Congratulations.
14:05Thank you.
14:07I think Max is next up.
14:12What a turnaround, Max.
14:13What a turnaround.
14:14You must be pretty satisfied with that.
14:16What did you do to the car or find something extra on the track?
14:19Yeah, for me, it's been two things.
14:21For sure, the car has not been great in the previous races.
14:23But also, from my side, I never felt comfortable with the layout of the car.
14:28And I think over those last few weeks, the team has been pushing flat out, you know, to try and
14:31bring upgrades to the car and making me feel more comfortable with a lot of things in the car.
14:36And it really pays off.
14:37I mean, I feel more in control of the car again.
14:40And then I can push a bit more.
14:42Then the upgrades are working.
14:44And, yeah, I mean, to be on the front row is way better than I expected heading into this weekend.
14:49Yeah, I mean, you certainly found some good time.
14:52And if you can get a good start, you've got a chance of controlling this race.
14:57And it might rain, of course.
14:58So, out front like that is pretty critical.
15:01Let's first start with a good start.
15:02I've not had a lot of them this year.
15:05So, we'll try to have a look at that for sure.
15:08See what the weather will do tomorrow.
15:09But I'm already very happy with where we are.
15:11You know, from here, there's like light at the end of the tunnel.
15:14And we can just push on and try to close the gap further.
15:17And your race pace, you're confident in that too?
15:19Looked all right in the sprint.
15:21Once I was in clean air.
15:23Of course, tomorrow, completely different day.
15:26Well done.
15:28Charles, P3, happy with that.
15:30It was a tense qualifying and super competitive.
15:35Yeah, it was on the limit.
15:37At the end of the day, we were just not fast enough today.
15:42And this weekend, we brought a significant package which helped us.
15:45But they're still here and there where we need to improve a little bit.
15:49It was a very tricky qualifying.
15:50The wind was changing also slightly from runs to runs.
15:53So, the car was behaving differently, especially in 11 and 12.
15:56There was massive differences between laps.
15:59So, that was tricky to manage to put a lap together.
16:02The NB3 is a good starting position.
16:04And I'm looking forward to tomorrow.
16:05You talked about when you rode the kerb going out of turn A.
16:08Did it do any damage underneath?
16:10I didn't have any news from the team.
16:12So, I think no.
16:14But I'll have to check.
16:15It was quite a big hit.
16:17But yeah, I don't think it affected massively the end result.
16:20All to play for.
16:22What's in the Ferrari team about the weather tomorrow?
16:24What's the information?
16:26Oh, it looks wet.
16:29It looks wet.
16:30Then how much when is still to be defined.
16:33But I think it will be a wet race.
16:35Congratulations.
16:36Good luck tomorrow.
16:42Well, what a qualifying session that is.
16:45And a third pole in a row for Kimi Antonelli.
16:48The narrative around him is changing week by week.
16:52When you look at who he had in his wake there.
16:55And at one stage, four tenths over Verstappen, Charlotte Clare, Lando Norris and his teammate George Russell.
17:03It was only Max that could come back at him to get within a tenth and a half.
17:08But Kimi Antonelli is proving week in, week out that he is something very, very special.
17:16There's Colin Farrell to present him with another pole position tyre.
17:23And the question is, will he be able to get a better start than he has been recently and escape
17:29from the rest tomorrow?
17:30It could be wet conditions.
17:32We'll keep you across that, obviously.
17:34But yet another fine display by a superstar in the making.
17:40Or is he already a superstar?
17:43I'll let you judge that for yourselves as we look ahead to tomorrow.
17:57When I was young, I just wanted to arrive to Formula One because of me and because it was my
18:02dream and something really personal.
18:04Then I started growing up and started to see what it was generating.
18:07It started to be a big part of it for my country, for Argentina, for all the fans, for everyone
18:13supporting me.
18:14And it started to be something much bigger than just for me.
18:20Have you been to a race ever?
18:22I've never.
18:22Never.
18:23We need to get you to a race soon.
18:25Yeah, yeah.
18:27Great shot.
18:28Great shot.
18:29Let's learn from the best.
18:31Let's see what he does.
18:36Wow.
18:37It's unbelievable, isn't it?
18:38I think we're there, Caddy.
18:39You here?
18:39Yeah, I keep losing myself.
18:41Right.
18:41We've got...
18:41Come on.
18:42Come on.
18:42Too much rock.
18:43Over here.
18:43Too much natching.
18:48And I hear...
18:49Oh, my God.
18:50The wall.
18:50You're actually close to the wall.
18:53This is stressful.
18:57Oh, my God.
18:58Big braking.
19:00You didn't leave any room for error there.
19:10So, busy build-up for us.
19:12Now, these are the timings for the moment.
19:15No change.
19:167 o'clock on air with the race scheduled to start at 9 o'clock.
19:21That's the latest information as well that we've got from Formula One.
19:24However, we do know that there is a storm coming in and it could change.
19:28So, please stay across all of our social channels, Formula One's social channels, FIA's channels as well, for fresh information
19:36on that.
19:37Looks like a decision.
19:38Well, they're going to meet and discuss this evening, but too early to make a judgment based on the weather
19:42forecast at the moment.
19:44And they'll leave it as late as possible, but with enough time to keep everybody, all the teams, all ourselves,
19:49as the broadcasters, all you at home, in form.
19:52But for the moment, 7 for a 9 o'clock start.
19:58Elsewhere, it's a massive weekend, the big weekend of sport on Sky Sports.
20:04On Sunday, WSL match between Manchester City and Liverpool from 11 a.m. on Sky Sports Premier League from 2
20:10o'clock.
20:11The Super Sunday clash between Manchester United and Liverpool, which is always massive.
20:15With the Madrid Open finalists from 3.30 on Sky Sports Tennis.
20:22There is more football.
20:24The Super Sunday continues.
20:251.30 Sky Sports Plus, if you would prefer, is Bournemouth against Crystal Palace.
20:31Monday night, Chelsea Forest.
20:33Monday night, Monday afternoon.
20:34It's a bank holiday.
20:35Keep forgetting.
20:35Monday night football.
20:36Everton against Manchester City from 6.30.
20:42Handcuffed together, a prison transport officer is tasked with getting a trained killer to court.
20:48All episodes of Brisbane are available now on Sky Atlantic.
20:54Just love watching Kimi Antonelli chuck the car around a track.
21:00Doesn't matter what track.
21:01Doesn't matter how close the walls are.
21:02This guy is somebody special.
21:05He has taken another pole position.
21:08Toto enjoyed it.
21:09Everybody at Mercedes enjoyed it.
21:10He enjoyed it.
21:11Did you discuss it in a minute?
21:15Let's keep watching.
21:22Kimi Antonelli just keeps on proving himself, doesn't he, in a very good Mercedes.
21:28He has maximized his performance for the last three races.
21:301.27.798.
21:32Tenth and a half just over that between himself and Max Verstappen.
21:36And then further back, some other of the big stars of the paddock.
21:41Did you enjoy that one, Jensen?
21:42Naomi, I mean, he's just...
21:43It was great.
21:44It's just amazing just to watch you do, isn't it?
21:47Well, there were so many drives at the front on the same lap time, basically.
21:52And then, boom, Kimi comes, 4.10.
21:54Impressive.
21:55Very good in the first sector.
21:56He was there.
21:57And then Max came back at him, particularly in the second sector.
22:01Is it all about the deployment?
22:03And what did Mercedes learn?
22:04I'm fascinated to know the difference between that and sprint qualifying.
22:08I don't know if it's going to all come down to deployment.
22:10I mean, there was obviously something there for them to learn.
22:12They were clearly down on McLaren from that perspective.
22:14But you have to remember that an FP, I want to say one, but the only free practice session we
22:18had this weekend,
22:20he didn't have a very clean run, right?
22:21He didn't get to test out that soft tire.
22:23So he kind of came into sprint qualifying kind of on the back foot.
22:27So there is an element of that.
22:28Also, everybody getting used to their upgrades and everything that they've brought this weekend.
22:32So it's just ironing out the small things.
22:34But he just looks so confident in the car.
22:36I mean, he doesn't have a lack of speed, does he?
22:38He did.
22:39And, you know, it's a 6.10 switch around from Lando being quickest in sprint qualifying to Kimi being quick.
22:466.10.
22:47That's an unbelievable amount of lap time.
22:49You try and find six tenths in a Formula One car with aerodynamics, it takes a long time.
22:54Well, you probably couldn't at all, but the teams, I mean.
22:57So, no, it's impressive and it's really interesting.
22:59And it'd be nice to try and understand why that is from Toto, hopefully.
23:03Well, I'd like to also know what happened from McLaren's perspective there as well.
23:07I just wonder if there was a slight issue in the set of the software on Oscar's thing.
23:11And then I wonder if that had crossed over to Lando's.
23:14We are waiting for Toto Rolf, but whilst we do, let's go to the Skypad because Karun's there to have
23:20a look at that pole.
23:24Thanks, Simon.
23:25Yeah, let's have a look at it.
23:26This is Kimi Antonelli on the left, Max Verstappen there on the right.
23:29And this first, second lap, let's go into Turn 1.
23:32You see, Antonelli has a couple of bites before he gets into the apex, but does get it hooked up
23:37really well there and launches himself out.
23:40But Verstappen actually does a great job of getting good drive.
23:43So when we get on the run down to Turn 3, and I'll just move along here to the 50
23:48-meter bore, you can see Antonelli has gained.
23:51Just really, really impressive.
23:53And the high-speed balance, I have to say, both cars looking very good.
23:57If we look at the track usage here on the way out of 6 and into 8.
24:02Antonelli, we saw it yesterday, Jenson and I were looking at it.
24:04He is more comfortable taking that wider line.
24:08And if we just use the curb as a reference, you can see he's pulled quite a margin on Verstappen
24:13in that early part of the lap.
24:14So a big advantage there for the Mercedes driver.
24:17Down the back straight, both drivers pushing hard, using the battery because they know they can reach our Turn 11.
24:22And we've talked a lot about the Red Bull upgrades and what Verstappen's done.
24:26We have to say, hats off to Red Bull powertrains.
24:29It's a brand-new engine, only their fourth-ever weekend in Formula 1.
24:33As an engine manufacturer, and I'll tell you what, you look at the reference of that curb, he's pulled some
24:38back.
24:39So there is nothing wrong with that Red Bull powertrains engine.
24:42Really well done to them.
24:43We haven't really given them enough credit, I think.
24:46Round Turn 12, a little bit of camera break up there for Max.
24:49Let's watch as they bounce over the curves of the chicane.
24:53Verstappen, I'll just go back a little bit here.
24:55Just watch Max there, just how close he is to the wall on the outside on the way in.
25:01He's definitely using a bit more weight, just opening up the entry and then gets a better line, I think,
25:07over that first part of the curb.
25:09But Antonelli does get it hooked up into the apex of 16 well enough to open up the wheel and
25:15launch himself onto the back straight.
25:17They're fairly similar, though.
25:19That is the middle sector of the lap.
25:20And there's really nothing to choose between them.
25:22And if anything, Verstappen has pulled a little bit back on what he lost in sector one.
25:27As we get down to the final braking zone here, this is where lots of drivers with this wind were
25:34finding a bit unpredictable.
25:35Even standing here, you could feel it's gusting.
25:38Antonelli gets into the curb there.
25:40Verstappen a little bit tighter on the way into it.
25:42And he gets a snap of oversteer.
25:45So although I think he kept a little bit more battery in reserve for that final straight, he struggled to
25:50put the power down.
25:51Had a few snaps of oversteer that maybe cost him a bit.
25:54But on the whole, it was sector one that we saw where the advantage was for Antonelli.
25:59And that just carried on for the rest of the lap.
26:01Back to you.
26:03Yeah, I actually can feel the wind funneling down here at the back of the paddock.
26:07And certainly down at turn 11, as Croft was saying in commentary, getting sort of 25 kilometer per hour gusts.
26:13And I wonder if that was also a fact today in catching a few of these guys out at awkward
26:18moments.
26:19Yeah, we felt it in the sort of in this tunnel area that we have here in the paddock earlier
26:22on that the wind has clearly picked up a lot.
26:25Even right now, it just feels a little bit intense out there.
26:27I don't know if that's the beginning of the rain coming in overnight.
26:30But we have got that to talk about a little bit later.
26:32It's tricky out there for the drivers when the wind changes like that, especially from one session to another.
26:37But I don't know how much of it came down to that.
26:38What was interesting there was to see that actually he made up all of his time in sector one, which
26:42is exactly where he had lasted in SQ1.
26:44So in SQ, I should say.
26:46Here's Toto.
26:47Congratulations, Toto.
26:49Let's start with the headline.
26:51Obviously, Kimi, another one.
26:54Every week, as I was saying, the narrative seems to be changing on him because you look at the drivers
26:58that were trailing in his wake.
27:00Until Max got within a tenth and a half, he was four tenths clear of Verstappen, Claire Norris, and his
27:05teammate George Russell.
27:06That's quite a special lap, wasn't it?
27:08Yeah, that first lap was really special because, as you say, he was three or more tenths ahead of the
27:14next guy.
27:16Spectacular.
27:16And that made the pole.
27:17But then it was a Kimi.
27:18You know, we are having confidence and then we are overpushing it.
27:22But that's how he is.
27:23You know, it's already an improvement because in the past it would end up in a wall.
27:27Now it's just a missed lap, but he's just showing his speed and that's really, really nice to see.
27:33And as you say, he doesn't have a lack of speed.
27:35It's been impressive to see him put those laps together.
27:37But Toto, obviously, you trusted in Kimi, right?
27:40You brought him into Formula One.
27:41You saw that he had this potential.
27:43Last year it wasn't that easy.
27:44Things are looking much better now, aren't they?
27:47Yeah, maybe before I answer today, the word to George also.
27:49You know, George said to me that there are drivers who struggle with certain tracks and you will know that.
27:54And here the asphalt is very smooth.
27:57And it's almost like a player that is good on clay and another one that is better on a hard
28:02surface.
28:04But through qualifying, he made it up in the times and it's just a smidge missing to be free.
28:10So I'm really happy also to see his development over qualifying on a track that he's not 100% comfortable.
28:17As you know, trusting in Kimi, you can look like a fool or you can look well.
28:25I think that the junior program that we are doing is quite diligent.
28:30And you look at his junior trajectory, you know, from minicards all the way to F2,
28:37you see the pace and you see the speed and then it just needs the development.
28:41And we've given him that last year to make mistakes.
28:44And there's more to come, but I think he has good speed character traits.
28:51Yeah, the roarability is definitely there and it's really exciting to watch.
28:54But I think you guys need to take some of the credit as well for the improvements you've made from
28:59sprint qualifying.
29:01The first sector was an area that you were weak compared to McLaren in sprint qualifying.
29:05But today that was your strong point.
29:07Was there a lot of learning that went on overnight to really understand deployment?
29:11Yeah, the team made a mistake.
29:13All of us, we were scratching our heads because even compared to our engine customers,
29:19turn four, I think, into turn four, we lost three turns.
29:21And it was a deployment issue that we fixed for today.
29:26And that gave us, obviously, put us back on par with all the others.
29:30I was just wondering if Anthony Davidson was in the sim overnight helping you with that conundrum, you were saying.
29:35But actually, when you looked at it from an independent perspective, watching that qualifying,
29:41at times we were trying to scratch our heads as to where the McLaren pace went
29:45and why certain drivers were where they were at any point.
29:49What has it come down to?
29:50Why is there quite a lot of variability going on, particularly at this track this weekend?
29:55Yeah, it's interesting because Max was not competitive in the sessions before
30:00and suddenly he was a board contender.
30:02We don't know.
30:03I think it's the learning over the weekend, the learning of these new cars,
30:06the ones who brought upgrades, how to tune them, the engine and energy management.
30:12And that's why some have advanced, some have gone backwards.
30:15As you say, Toto, some of the teams, particularly Ferrari, McLaren,
30:18have brought a lot of upgrades this weekend, you guys much less.
30:21I know we're expecting them for Canada, I think it is.
30:24How much do you think that they've closed up, though, to where you guys expect to be?
30:28And have they impressed you this weekend in a way that maybe you didn't want to be impressed?
30:32You said the Cadillacs.
30:33No, I didn't say Cadillac.
30:34I said McLaren and Ferrari.
30:35Oh, McLaren and Ferrari.
30:38That was less impressive.
30:39But McLaren and Ferrari, you know, they put some really good upgrades on the car.
30:45And yesterday we were like, wow, OK, we probably can't match it because our upgrades are out of sequence.
30:54So tomorrow is going to be difficult, it's clear.
30:56We're hoping for the upgrade to kick in in Montreal.
30:59This is where we are bringing lots of parts.
31:01And we expected something like this.
31:04I know you've got to go very, very quickly.
31:05It looks like rain tomorrow.
31:07But I'm quite looking forward to seeing the last person that came into the sport with a reputation like Kimi
31:12Antonelli was Max Verstappen.
31:14Kind of like Master Apprentice, a little bit like that on the front road tomorrow.
31:17That would be interesting to see with Kimi's starts and the struggles he's had a little bit.
31:21So Kimi's start today in the sprint race, that wasn't his mistake.
31:24It was a grip calibration issue where we got it wrong as a team.
31:29So he was bang on target.
31:32As for the weather tomorrow, you know, I love rain.
31:33It shows who can drive or not.
31:36Sometimes there is a bit of variability in the race.
31:39So we are up for it.
31:41Next time, well played.
31:42See tomorrow.
31:44Yeah, a great performance by Kimi Antonelli.
31:47But a few head-scratching moments for McLaren.
31:50Let's hear from both of their drivers.
31:53Hi, Lando.
31:54Your time yesterday for the pole in the sprint, three seconds after today's time.
31:58Can you just tell us why the car was so different today?
32:00What was it feeling like?
32:01You don't know.
32:02No, I'm not so sure.
32:02I mean, there are little things like it was probably a bit windier and the direction was
32:07a little bit different, temperatures, but same for everyone, right?
32:11So I think both cars clearly struggled a bit more than yesterday and we need to understand
32:15why.
32:17At the same time, it's not like I think we did a bad job.
32:20I think other people just, they did a pretty bad job yesterday and today they just did the
32:26job that they should have done.
32:27And I said it yesterday already, like Mercedes were just as quick as us.
32:33When you look at the GPS from Ferrari and Red Bull, there's many places that are quicker than
32:37us, you know?
32:38So I think we just did a very, very good job yesterday and I did a good job yesterday and
32:42we did a good job this morning to win the race.
32:45Today is probably just a little reality check, but it's more where we just deserve to be
32:49and where we should be, honestly.
32:50So I think we're all surprised how quick we were yesterday.
32:54But I think it was more because we did a good job, others didn't and today was a little bit
32:59more the other way around.
33:00But it's not like we did a bad job.
33:01I think we just struggled a little bit.
33:03It doesn't look like everyone's closed up.
33:05Do you need the rain tomorrow for the win?
33:07Can you still do something at the start?
33:08What are your thoughts on the prospects for it?
33:12We'll see.
33:13I mean, we have had good starts, but Ferraris have also had probably the best starts in
33:18general.
33:19So I would like it to be dry.
33:22It would just keep it more straightforward.
33:24But yeah, it's a real challenge for everyone, you know, in the rain and the wet conditions.
33:28So both are opportunities.
33:31Both we have chances to go forward.
33:35I think the Mercedes should probably just clear off of Kimi.
33:37But hopefully we can have a bit of a race with some of the guys around us.
33:41Thank you very much.
33:44Hi, Oscar.
33:45That last run, you had the fastest middle sector, but then your first and thirds were
33:50there.
33:50How tricky was it out there for you in the car and were conditions changing at all?
33:55It was a bit tough.
33:59Yeah, I mean, it was just very variable from a lot of things.
34:03Wind, wind, track conditions, what the power unit wants to do.
34:11It was, yeah, all a little bit random.
34:13So not the smoothest of sessions, especially the last lap of Q3.
34:19Yeah, did what I thought was a good job through turn four, five and six and then something
34:26weird happened.
34:27And that's why my middle sector was so good because I lost a whole bunch of time with a
34:31super clip when I didn't expect it and then had more energy in the back straight.
34:36So that's why that looks so good.
34:39What's the prospect for tomorrow then?
34:40I mean, obviously you have great starts.
34:43What's the target?
34:44It does look like you've caught up to Mercedes essentially, but then when a lap like that
34:49goes in from Kimi, what can you do in the race to try and take the win?
34:54I think probably build some oars first.
34:57So your forecast is a lot of rain?
34:59I don't know.
35:00To be honest, I've not looked.
35:01Everyone's spoken about it the whole weekend, so I'm just going to roll with that.
35:03But we'll see what we get.
35:06I think, you know, if it is wet, that's going to obviously throw in a lot of spanners in
35:10the works because no one's really driven these cars in the rain and no one really knows what
35:14they're going to do.
35:15So, yeah, hopefully we're on the right side of that.
35:20Your race engineer knows all about winning with oars, so maybe that's in your favor.
35:24Exactly, yes.
35:28Well, Andrea, it's a funny old world, Formula One, isn't it?
35:30Just explain to people watching how they can see a McLaren 1-2 in a sprint race and then
35:33later in the day, maybe not the result you wanted in qualifying.
35:36I think we said already yesterday after the sprint qualifying where we were in pole position
35:42that actually multiple cars could have been in pole position because we had Mercedes that
35:47struggled a bit with deployment, I think.
35:50Leclerc made a couple of mistakes.
35:52So actually, the reality is that because of the combination of the upgrades and track
35:57characteristics, I think the four teams are very close.
36:00And it's more about execution.
36:03Today, the conditions were different to yesterday.
36:06The wind was very different.
36:07We had a few things to manage with the power unit consistency and the drivers needed to
36:13find their rhythm.
36:14And it looks like some other teams have been better than us from this point of view.
36:18So I think the reality is that the teams are very close and it's more up to the execution.
36:22I think for Formula One, this is very good news.
36:25That's some entertaining racing ahead of us.
36:29Well, if we turn to the race finally, any thoughts on tomorrow?
36:32I think we're going to be looking at the weather radar.
36:35There'll be some localised thunderstorms maybe that we can look to avoid.
36:41Yes, the conditions at the moment look like they will be wet at some stage, but it's thunders,
36:47so difficult to say when and how.
36:49So this can create for an eventful race, I would say.
36:55We just have to be, you know, adapt to the condition, be responsive, usual basics of racing
37:01in unpredictable situations, looking at the weather.
37:05And like I say, I think we look forward to an exciting race.
37:09Thank you, Andrea.
37:13Just a quick update on that.
37:14We understand there is a meeting at F1 and FIA in about an hour and a half's time, so that's
37:19seven o'clock local, to decide on whether to bring the race forward.
37:23I think the issue is this year, we can get into actually all the changes in the regulations
37:28after the break about what happens in wet weather conditions.
37:31But if there are scattered thunderstorms, if there's one within eight miles off the track,
37:36it's an immediate red flag, and that is the issue.
37:39It could be very stop-start, and it could actually get, it could get timed out if we
37:43keep on having to have those, and everyone has, all the marshals have to get bussed back,
37:46by the way, to the track, if there's thunder around, et cetera, et cetera.
37:49So there's a lot, yeah, it's going to be complicated.
37:52So they might be moving, moving?
37:54But they might move the race forward.
37:56Okay.
37:56That's the thing.
37:57So it depends when the thunderstorms come in.
37:59Top seven, everybody else improved.
38:01It was about three-tenths for most of them, apart from Max, who was half a second better
38:06than in SQ3.
38:08However, it wasn't for the McLaren boys.
38:11It was three-tenths worse.
38:13That's the issue.
38:14I mean, did they just stick with it, think, hey, as we said, it's time to say, if it ain't
38:17broke, don't fix it.
38:18The others fixed it.
38:19Well, they didn't have an issue, did they, in SQ1?
38:23They're saying that that's as quick as they went, and other people didn't really get
38:26their laps together.
38:26So, yeah, it's a big shift.
38:28You know, it's six-tenths compared to Kimi, Lando's lap time.
38:32So that's a lot to lose in a session.
38:35But, you know, they did the best they can, they think, today in qualifying.
38:39So we'll see what happens tomorrow.
38:40I like what Andrea Stella is saying, though.
38:41He's been extremely positive about where we are now in that maybe it's not going to be
38:47all Mercedes domination, although there's clues there that they've still got a big upgrade
38:51in Montreal.
38:52But we could get some fantastic racing this year, which is what we all want.
38:55Well, we're in race four, and we've already got the top five within less than four-tenths
38:59of a second.
39:00So to have multiple different names in it, I mean, that session, we didn't know who was
39:03going to come out on top.
39:04And all of a sudden, you've got Max on the front row.
39:06So things are constantly changing, which is exciting.
39:09And that's all talk.
39:09Oh, sorry.
39:10No, you finished.
39:11No, no, no.
39:11You finished.
39:12Go to the break.
39:13Shall we go to the break?
39:14Go to the break.
39:14Go to the break.
39:15We're running out of time.
39:16So let's go to the break.
39:17And on the other side of that, we will discuss Max Verstappen, because very much back and
39:22in control of that Red Bull, and as Kroon was saying, credit to the old engine department.
39:28Red Bull powertrains.
39:30It's not taking them long to get on a path.
39:32How much of a factor was that?
39:33We'll discuss that in a moment.
39:42Come back.
39:43Lewis Hamilton will start sixth tomorrow.
39:45He was half a second off Kimi Antonelli, about a tenth and a half off his teammate, Charles
39:49Leclerc, who will start from third.
39:51Here is the seven-time world champion.
39:53Talking to Rachel.
39:56Hi, Lewis.
39:57Did the team manage to get the software issue fixed for you?
40:00Yeah.
40:00The car was much better in qualifying.
40:02So I don't think we had any power issues.
40:05That was the best that it's been this weekend.
40:08And we changed the car, and I was much, much happier with it.
40:11I wish I started the weekend with that balance.
40:14Q2 was looking really solid, and then when I got to Q3, I just struggled to extract the
40:18most from it.
40:18I think a lot of people struggled in Q3.
40:20I don't know whether conditions changed a lot for people or anything.
40:23But in terms of the upgrades that the team have brought here this weekend, do you feel
40:27they've worked, the team knows the direction now?
40:29Now, is there a case of leaving here with a bit more confidence, perhaps?
40:33I don't know if it's leaving with more confidence.
40:35I think the rest of the team did a great job to bring upgrades.
40:38It worked so hard.
40:39So I'm incredibly grateful for that.
40:41I think clearly we need to...
40:43The other teams are doing different things with their car in terms of development,
40:46and so we need to look into that.
40:50But I know that we're pushing hard.
40:52I know there's more to come.
40:53And I really hope that...
40:54As I said, I think there's more to extract from what we currently have.
40:58We're still losing a bit on the straights, but I think we improved a lot in this session.
41:03And before this weekend, we knew that we were like four to five tenths down on straights.
41:08So I don't know if that's the same here this weekend.
41:11But, yeah, I feel like we took a step forward.
41:14You know, it doesn't show on my result, but I'm optimistic for tomorrow.
41:18Good. Thanks.
41:21Optimistic, and particularly optimistic if you can get off to another good start.
41:25That's their strengths.
41:26They've got to play to them, even in the wet.
41:27Yes, well, that's the thing.
41:30I mean, too much torque off the line is a recipe for a lot of wheel spins.
41:33So I think it's going to be...
41:34If it does rain and it's going to be wet out there,
41:36I think it is going to be a very interesting, challenging set of events for the drivers
41:42because that kind of power, more so than they've had before,
41:45especially on torque, is difficult to deal with in the rain.
41:48It's really tough.
41:49Unless it's a safety car, which it probably will be.
41:51Well, yeah, that's true.
41:52That's a very good point, Jensen.
41:54There's a number of things that they're going to have to change.
41:59They're not going to be used to driving in the wet.
42:01I mean, I should imagine utterly terrifying with that amount of torque you're going to have underneath you.
42:08Yeah, immediate torque from the 500 horsepower electric motor.
42:13So, yeah, it's a lot of power.
42:14I'm trying to control that under your foot.
42:16I know they have an unbelievable...
42:17No boost, though.
42:17No boost.
42:18Yeah, but they have an unbelievably long throttle.
42:20I don't mean the starts.
42:20I mean just driving in the race.
42:22It's an unbelievably long throttle pedal to try and control that.
42:25But still, it's very, very difficult if you're on and off the throttle to control that.
42:29So I'm looking forward to watching it.
42:30I'm sure the drivers are a little bit worried.
42:32Yeah, definitely.
42:33I mean, with regards to closing speeds.
42:34I mean, actually, Charles was asked about this when it came into the weekend
42:37because there was that possibility just in the background about it.
42:40And he was like, we're just going to have to go out there and see what happens.
42:45I think that's the thing.
42:46It's a proper step into the unknown.
42:48It is, and it's a tricky...
42:49I mean, if it would have happened in free practice or even the sprint earlier today,
42:52I think the stakes would have been obviously a lot lower.
42:54Whereas tomorrow, you've got a lot of points on the table.
42:57And, you know, it's not exactly a situation where drivers are just going to take it easy
43:00and see how it goes.
43:01But it is about getting to the finish line.
43:02So they might just be experimenting out there in the beginning.
43:05But it is, honestly, it's one of those days as a driver where you prefer to be in the hospitality.
43:10Yeah, and the closing speeds, yeah.
43:11I hope we don't have the closing speeds because in the dry, you can see the car in front.
43:14In the wet, you can't see the car in front.
43:16So closing speeds of 40 kilometers an hour, it's very big.
43:19Hopefully, with the wet weather driving, they're driving slower.
43:22So they don't need as much energy.
43:24So they're not going to run out, I hope.
43:26Or it could be the other way around because they're braking less.
43:28Okay, let's hear from George Russell.
43:30He'll start from 5th tomorrow, talking with Karim.
43:34Hi, guys.
43:36George, it looks like it's been a bit of a tricky weekend for you.
43:39So three, four tenths behind.
43:41Kimi, what's the feeling like for you in the cockpit?
43:44I just struggle on these low grip circuits, to be honest.
43:47Like here, Zambor, Brazil.
43:50Sorry, excuse me.
43:51Thank you.
43:53He wanted a photo with you there.
43:55And it was the same last year.
43:56He was on pole last year.
43:57I was P5.
43:58So it's something I do want to work on.
44:01But I would say there's probably three tracks from the 24 that are real outliers for me.
44:07And Miami is definitely top of that list.
44:11So this is a weekend.
44:12Is it damage limitation for you?
44:14Because obviously the others have gotten more competitive.
44:16So I guess in the early part of the season, at worst, you're going to be second.
44:20Now you're looking at fifth and sixth.
44:22What are you thinking?
44:23Yeah, I'm not really thinking damage limitation or I'm just going out there to maximize the result.
44:29And that was the same this morning.
44:31Tomorrow is a totally different day.
44:32Weather on the radar.
44:35And we saw, again, with the race starts, you know, suddenly, you know, everything can change in that first couple
44:42of hundred meters.
44:42Yours do great.
44:43Yeah, we actually, I mean, it's great having a good start from P6.
44:46I would have liked that when I was on the front row in the last couple of races.
44:50So, yeah, as I said, we're just not really in a, I'm not really in a great groove at the
44:55moment.
44:55But, you know, it's still really early days.
44:57This is a weak track for me.
44:59And just looking forward to get into some tracks where I know I sort of excel and, yeah, long old
45:05year.
45:05Can you pinpoint, is it in the high speed, is it slow speed, braking entry, like, is there an area?
45:10Because you sort of narrowed down to the low grip circuits.
45:13Now, how do you, which part of it do you think is the weakness?
45:17I would say it's just, I'm like quite a smooth, precise driver.
45:24And that's always been my style.
45:26And on these tracks, you've just got to be happy with the car just sliding.
45:30And it's not, like, I like the car on the edge.
45:33But this is like you've got a set of 200 lap hold tires on your car.
45:37And you go around and it's just sliding, understeering, oversteering.
45:41That's the same for everybody, for what it's worth.
45:44You know, it's so hot.
45:45Tire pressures are high.
45:46The grip's really low.
45:47So it doesn't actually feel that pleasant.
45:49Whereas you go to tracks like Saudi and the grip's super high and it feels mega to drive.
45:54And that's where I...
45:55It sounds like Oscar and Lando.
45:57This is what Oscar's saying.
45:58He's super smooth and struggled with the low grip track.
46:00So at least you know where it is.
46:02So hopefully tomorrow, well, who knows what the weather will do.
46:04Yeah, for sure.
46:04But it'll go better.
46:05I can hear someone beeping the horn.
46:06You've got to go.
46:06Yes.
46:07Thank you for your time.
46:10Timmy Antonelli, Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher.
46:13First three poles all consecutively.
46:15That's quite a good list to be on.
46:17Tell me how you did it.
46:18Because while others struggled with the sliding today, you seem to use it as part of your flow
46:22for your lap.
46:23Yeah, it doesn't have been easy this weekend.
46:26Very hot, track very slippery.
46:30And also this track is not easy to put all the sectors together.
46:36So I think I was happy with my lap.
46:40Maybe there was a little bit more on the table, but we don't know because I didn't even do one
46:44corner.
46:47But I'm happy with the performance, especially this weekend where with the others bringing
46:53big upgrades, it has been a bit more difficult for us, but the team did a tremendous job.
46:59I'm not going to ask you about starts, but I will ask you about the rain.
47:02Does that go in your favor potentially?
47:04If then it is a wet start tomorrow, that takes that element out of it for you?
47:09Do you want the rain?
47:10Well, I mean, if it's a rolling start, definitely we will take that element out of the water.
47:15But yeah, let's see.
47:17I mean, obviously it's meant to be raining a lot.
47:20So let's see also with timings what's going to happen.
47:24Hopefully we're going to be able to find the best timing in order not to have crazy conditions.
47:29But for sure it's going to be slippery tomorrow in the wet if there is any.
47:34And it's not going to be easy also because everyone has so little experience.
47:40Some of us even don't have any experience on the wet.
47:42So it's going to be quite a new time for everyone.
47:45Thank you, John.
47:46Bye-bye.
47:48Chelsea, can you empathize with George this weekend?
47:51Because Toto's talked about it.
47:53George has talked about it himself.
47:54I'm precise.
47:55He's broken.
47:55Would you like yourself more to George than these young tearaways?
47:59Like, just throw it around and all that sort of stuff on these low grip circuits.
48:05Definitely more George.
48:06When you're a precision driver, it's really difficult when you find yourself sliding into a corner
48:11and you can't pick out the apex as you want or the exit.
48:14So yeah, I would definitely be more on George's side.
48:17And I think maybe Oscar as well.
48:19And we're seeing that a little bit with him and Lando this weekend, the difference there.
48:22He always said actually, you know, coming up through the junior formula, that he was more
48:26of a conservative, if you like, than a liberal out there in a car and that he wouldn't take
48:32unnecessary risks.
48:33He's trying to add to that as he's now stepping up and going for championships.
48:37I wonder, you know, if this continues and we're seeing this from Kimi at every track
48:41and then we get to places like Sam, we'll get to places like Interlagos, but he has one
48:44at Interlagos, whether he's going to have to just try to change his style to keep up
48:49on days like this.
48:50Well, for sure.
48:50I mean, the worst thing you see is your teammate, you know, making more of a gap, going out
48:55every session and being quicker than him.
48:56And regardless of whether it's a driving style thing or not, at the end of the day,
49:00if he ends up in a head-to-head battle with his teammate, he's got to be better than
49:03him every time he goes out there.
49:04So, you know, but it might swing around again, but obviously he's going to be irritated by
49:08that.
49:08But, look, George, I think, is a great driver, and I think he's not going to love
49:13this situation, but it also is a long season ahead.
49:16He's got consistency on his side.
49:18I mean, he's obviously not got the ultimate pace this weekend, but he's always there.
49:21He's always going to score the points.
49:22As you say, he's slightly more conservative, and sometimes that's just how you score more
49:25points as well.
49:26And it's also worse here because there are other teams that are competitive.
49:29So he's got the McLarens in front.
49:30He's got Ferraris.
49:31He's got, you know, it's tough.
49:33And even Max in a red ball.
49:35So that's a bigger issue.
49:36If you're a couple of tenths off your teammate, that's an issue when there's so many cars
49:40that are competitive.
49:41Okay, I promised you Max Verstappen, and we didn't deliver, but we will deliver after
49:47the break because he kept getting blocked by other drivers with Rachel in the pen, but
49:51she's got him now.
49:52But there we are.
49:53It's a hat-trick of poles for Kimi Ancelin.
49:55Can he make it a hat-trick of wins?
49:57But we'll hear from the man alongside him on the front row in Max next.
50:07Welcome back.
50:08As we wrap things up from qualifying here in Miami now, as promised, but a little later
50:14than usual, here is Max Verstappen talking with Rachel.
50:21Hi, Max.
50:22If I'd said to you in Japan you'll be a tenth, tenth and a half of a Mercedes pole by
50:27the
50:27time you came here, would you have believed us?
50:29I would have told you completely crazy.
50:31You wouldn't be the first person to have said that to me, I can tell you that.
50:34Yeah.
50:35Well, it's an incredible turnaround for us.
50:38It's two things, probably.
50:40I mean, I really didn't feel in control of the car up until this weekend.
50:44I didn't know what was going to happen with it, so the team has brought, of course, a
50:49really good performance upgrade to the car, made the car also much more drivable for me.
50:56And, yeah, it just really clicked as soon as I jumped in the car here.
51:00It really, yeah, it just felt great, a lot better.
51:04And, yeah, for us, still, to be on the front row is a bit of a surprise, but we take
51:08it.
51:09And I think it's also a massive boost for the whole team.
51:11That it is at least, like, heading into the right direction.
51:16Yeah, I was going to ask you, so to find a direction to take on these cars this year
51:19with these regs must be a really confidence-boosting for everybody.
51:23But when you are alongside Kimi on the front row tomorrow, the opportunity for you to get
51:27into the lead.
51:27I've not had really good starts yet, so let's see.
51:30Let's see.
51:31We'll see what happens tomorrow.
51:32All right, thanks, man.
51:36Well, Laurent, well done.
51:37The car has clearly taken a step forward.
51:40Can you explain the hard work everybody in Milton Keynes has managed to do that coming
51:44here to Miami?
51:45You know, they've been amazing.
51:46Once again, we left from Japan, I'm sure you recall, and we knew we had some pretty
51:52serious homework to do in terms of getting to the true understanding of the serious limitations
51:58we had.
51:58Max and Isaacs were not having something they could push with, regardless of where the competition
52:03was related to us.
52:05So there have been some amazing piece of work done at 360 degrees in Milton Keynes, chassis
52:10side, PU side, to get to the bottom of what was limiting us.
52:14We don't think we have fixed everything, but we are certainly heading into the right direction
52:19based on what we can see this weekend.
52:21Okay, and it was very close today.
52:23Do you think maybe you could have got Paul?
52:26You know, when you are within one-tenth, you know, of course, of course, you look at it
52:31and you say you could have been fighting for Paul.
52:33I think, you know, Max was up there in Q1, in Q2, and in Q3.
52:37So, yeah, it's getting pretty tight.
52:39Okay, and just finally, your rear wing has captured the imagination of everybody.
52:43People who've watched Formula One for years have never seen anything like it.
52:47Tell us a little bit about it.
52:49They call it the Max Arena wing.
52:51How much drag does it actually drop?
52:54Is it really effective, particularly effective here in Miami?
52:57And was it a copy of the Ferrari, or did you have the idea before, maybe at the same time
53:02as they did?
53:03Look, what I can tell you for sure is that the guys invented it without having seen the
53:09Ferrari wing.
53:11So, you know, I'm not going to tell you who has invented it first because we'll never
53:15know, but what I can tell you is that they certainly invented our wing independently of what the
53:21other guys have done because it was far, far before it was actually at the end of last year
53:27that we started to work on this wing.
53:29We had a fairly troubled start of season and we had to drop a little bit of priority and
53:33the wings made it only here, but it's an amazing piece of kit.
53:37It certainly is.
53:38Okay, thank you very much, Lauren.
53:41Hell of a difference in demeanour for Max Verstappen.
53:44I mean, like a completely different Max Verstappen.
53:46We haven't seen him with a smile on his face all year, but you can understand why.
53:50Can you hear me?
53:51Because I can't hear myself.
53:52Okay.
53:53Can you hear me?
53:54Okay, cool.
53:54As long as Simon can hear me, that's all that matters.
53:57Yeah, look, he's been calling for some change.
53:59He's been very vocal about the fact that he was unhappy with, you know, some of the sets
54:03of the regulation, but also just the performance of the car.
54:05And they've done a lot of tweaks to the car this weekend, loads of upgrades on that car,
54:09including what I've now learned.
54:11They're calling the Max Arena, and it seems to be working for him.
54:14So, well, Ted's just said that.
54:16That's the thing.
54:17Yeah, yeah, that's the thing.
54:18I don't know if Ted came over that.
54:18I just wanted to be locked in.
54:20Very quickly, how concerned are you for Isaac Hadjar?
54:24This was as close to flat-out qualifying as we've had so far this season.
54:28The difference between them, nine-tenths.
54:30In the past, when they've been managing qualifying, it's been a different story.
54:35Can we read anything into that?
54:37You can read into it, eight-tenths.
54:39That's a lot of lap time.
54:41But from what Laurent said, he's not really had the balance all weekend.
54:45And I don't know if they are finding the aero package is not exactly the same.
54:49I don't know.
54:49But it's a tough one for him.
54:51We know his speed is there.
54:52It's just when you're up against Max, it gets a little bit more difficult, doesn't it?
54:56OK, the Alpines, both of them inside the top ten, in the same positions as they were
55:00at the end of sprint qualifying.
55:02Let's start with Pierre Gasly in tenth, Conor Pinto in eighth.
55:06Hi, Pierre.
55:07Everyone seems to have a very similar qualifying position to what they had for the sprint.
55:11But you did move up places in that sprint.
55:13What's the prospect for tomorrow, if it's a straightforward race?
55:16I know there's rain around.
55:18Hopefully it rains and it's a complete chaos.
55:21Is that your best opportunity to get some good points, you think?
55:23I mean, we've seen it in the top four is too fast in race trims.
55:28So I think we're fighting between eight and ten.
55:33I think we've been clear of the midfields this weekend on this track.
55:37So it's quite positive.
55:40Yeah.
55:41So I think we'll try to go for that.
55:42I think overall I'm quite disappointed on my side.
55:45The whole weekend's been pretty messy and struggling with something on the car,
55:48which we can't really get to the bottom of at the moment.
55:52So I think there'll be quite a lot of digging to do before Canada.
55:55But this is what we have for tomorrow.
55:57And yeah, I'm still hopeful we can score points.
55:59Thank you.
56:03Another P8 in qualifying.
56:04So tell me, how do you turn the P8 now into a P8 or better tomorrow and not drop back?
56:10We'll try, we'll try.
56:11I think today was really obvious the amount of day that we had on the rear.
56:17Of course, if there were contact with Max in the start, I fell back.
56:21I lost those two places and then it was really tricky in the 30 years.
56:24So I think just do all the basics right and we'll have a good race.
56:29I'm confident that the car is quick.
56:31Of course, that rear deck is worse.
56:33With my old rear wing, it is a little bit punishing, I think,
56:37especially in the race because you slide so much on the rear
56:40that any extra bit of downforce is really helpful and you take it with both hands.
56:45But it is what it is.
56:46I think we had a really solid weekend so far
56:49and I'm really proud of the team to have a WQ3 for Alpine yesterday, today.
56:55Again, it's just showing the effort that everyone has been doing is paying us back.
57:00And, yeah, I'm really proud, of course, tomorrow we need to finish the job.
57:04But it's good to show how good the car is.
57:07Thank you.
57:08Well, he seems like a different driver over the last couple of races than we've seen
57:13and it's so often the case, isn't it?
57:15After, you know, one season, when you come back, you've got your feet under the desk
57:19and you can be a different driver?
57:22Yes, you could be.
57:22I mean, the car is also very different this year.
57:25So there's a possibility that it might suit him more.
57:27I mean, obviously, Pierre is still pretty quick.
57:30We've been complimenting him all weekend long already.
57:32But for Carlo Pinto, yeah, he's been here a little bit longer.
57:35He's finding his feet.
57:36But, yeah, who knows?
57:37Let's see what it really does tomorrow.
57:39Got a big feature with him tomorrow.
57:40But let's just go back to the rain possibilities before we go in
57:43because there are a number of things that will change tomorrow
57:46because of the rules and regulations.
57:49No boost, saying fixed power maps, straight line mode is restricted.
57:53It looks like the rear wing won't open,
57:56so we might not get to see the Macarena or the Maxarena tomorrow.
57:59But these are all safety precautions because, as we said,
58:02and we keep coming back to, this is an entirely new era
58:06and entirely, well, a step into the unknown, it could be tomorrow.
58:10Yeah, so no, I think it's the right thing.
58:11Both front and rear wings will be completely closed,
58:14so we'll have as much downforce as we can.
58:16The only issue with that is you're going slower in a straight line,
58:19so you're at full power for longer, really.
58:22So recharge will be difficult.
58:24So there's a lot of things for them to learn,
58:25and I'm excited about seeing that, if it rains.
58:27Yeah, if it rains, but let's say that it does.
58:30We know who's particularly good in the rain.
58:32That's Max Verstappen.
58:33Can't wait to see Kimi Antonelli in the rain up against him
58:36at the front of the grid.
58:37Well, I mean, yes, obviously Max is incredible in the rain,
58:39but if you think back to Australia last year
58:42and those treacherous conditions,
58:44Antonelli making his way back to the front,
58:46I think he pretty much enjoys those conditions too.
58:48But, of course, it's going to be tough with Max just behind him.
58:52Impossible to pick a winner,
58:53but we've got all the ingredients there, haven't we?
58:55I think if this weekend has taught us anything so far
58:58is that it could be an exciting year, 2026.
59:01Yeah, this has been a great weekend so far.
59:03I've loved it.
59:04And seeing the fight between different drivers
59:06for the sprint pole and for the actual qualifying session,
59:10it's awesome.
59:10Looking forward to the race.
59:11Thanks both.
59:12Keep your fingers crossed for tomorrow.
59:14Tent qualifying notebook is next.
59:16At the moment, as I said,
59:187 o'clock on air for a race start at 9 o'clock.
59:21But keep an eye on all of our channels,
59:23social and FIAs and FOMs,
59:26because that could be brought forward
59:28and we'll find out soon at 1 a.m. your time.
59:31See you tomorrow.
59:32Antonelli on pole.
59:32Bye-bye.
