00:00Barry, what caught my eye there was that they went for the vice president before the president.
00:04Is that protocol?
00:06I noticed that, too. I think that was luck of the draw.
00:09The agent might have just happened to be right there.
00:12So they grabbed J.D. And if you notice, the vice president isn't fighting him.
00:17And they know, the president and the vice president know, if somebody in the Secret Service tells you, let's go,
00:25we're leaving now, there's no bones about it.
00:27They don't argue. They get up because they know their life depends on it.
00:31And that's what you're seeing there. So, yeah, I think it was just luck of the draw.
00:35That agent just happened to be closer with the president.
00:38There were already agents kind of right there with them.
00:40They were also waiting for the cat team to get into play so they can secure the president's movement.
00:46Better to have a bunch of guys with rifles that are highly tactical trained in position to repel fire if
00:53they have to before you move the president.
00:55And that's just what they did. And you saw that at Butler, Pennsylvania, as well.
00:59Great success overall. It kind of looks like chaos, but the Secret Service brought order to the chaos.
01:06If you look at closely, all of these people posted up correctly, were ready to repel fire if they needed
01:12to.
01:13Were there any deficiencies in what we saw there?
01:16No, I don't really think so.
01:18I would just say the only thing that could have done better is the president not stumbling and falling.
01:24That's not his fault. That can be expected.
01:27They trained for just that. You would expect something like that.
01:30I would expect something like that.
01:32You just work through it and do the best you can and get him off that stage as fast as
01:36he can.
01:37OK. And I want to get your thoughts as well on the CCTV footage of the alleged gunman himself.
01:43As he runs through security here.
01:49I mean, he's going at quite some speed.
01:52And obviously there is a couple of shots fired by the gunman himself.
01:58Your thoughts on that footage?
02:01Yeah. So it's terrifying footage, actually.
02:04What's good is there's no shortage of Secret Service and police officers at this event.
02:08You see literally like eight of them right there, which is a great thing.
02:12And because the Secret Service has been there before so many times for other events.
02:16And also, this is the hotel where Reagan was shot at also.
02:21OK, but it's a terrifying video because it happens so fast.
02:25And if those officers and agents weren't paying attention, he would have ran through without them even engaging him.
02:31So they were doing their job.
02:32They stopped them. They tackled them.
02:34He would have been tackled anyway or stopped or even shot at literally the next checkpoint would have been the
02:40next door over.
02:41So he really didn't get far.
02:43But also, you have to understand that this is an exterior check in point, just like at any castle or
02:50any military base or any event that the Secret Service has.
02:54There's going to be an exit and entry point and anything can happen right there.
02:59And this is exactly what this checkpoint is designed for.
03:03It's designed to stop this.
03:05He didn't get so much inside the checkpoint, so to say.
03:09They stopped him literally at the front door.
03:12This is the front door to the castle and anything can happen at the front door.
03:16And that's why you have that checkpoint there.
03:18Good job, Secret Service.
03:20They saved the president's life this time.
03:22Barry, finally, is it usual part of protocol that no shots were fired towards the gunman despite him discharging?
03:31So I'm not certain of who fired.
03:34It's my understanding.
03:35The Secret Service did return fire.
03:38If not, I think they might have not fired because he had already been tackled.
03:43The shots fired that we hear in a video, I suspect, were Secret Service shots, although I do know that
03:49the perpetrator fired at least one shot.
03:51So I'm in the dark with that one.
03:54I don't know the answer to that for sure.
03:57But what I do know is that this man had a mission.
04:00He was going to run as fast as he could and get as close to the stage as he could
04:05and try to kill the president of the United States.
04:08He was thwarted because of the U.S. Secret Service.
04:12Former Secret Service agent Barry Denadio, thank you so much for your insight this afternoon.
