00:11the wind direction is changing so we've got to get out of it because if that mum wakes up we're
00:16in trouble as soon as she woke up it was like go time for most of us the idea of
00:35being eaten by wild
00:36animals feels impossible because today more than half of us live in cities we traded open horizons
00:47for walls and left just a handful of people still living by the land they're the earth's original
00:52explorers the nomads and as their land disappears so does their way of life it would be easy to
01:00believe that there's no area left still classed as truly wild but you'd be wrong there are still
01:06majestic pockets of land that are rugged wild and teeming with life we found not just one hippo
01:13but all the hippos this is the Tanzania you don't get to see and the critical thing is we need
01:21them
01:21for the health of our planet I'm Lucy and I'm an explorer I've been leading expeditions all over
01:26the world for over a decade and now I'm on a mission to take you with me I've journeyed to
01:32some of the world's most distant corners but this time I'm trying to cross one of Africa's last great
01:37wildernesses on foot a route that only a few have traveled and never in this way once in a lifetime
01:43experience I feel like I've just stepped into a world and just trying to keep up I want to show
01:48you the beauty this place really is a paradise the surprising this is mad and the downright terrifying
01:56oh my god I'll be joined by those who still live by the land true nomadic hunter-gatherers and learn
02:03how they're adapting in a world that's changing fast I'm gonna have to get used to the fact things are
02:07gonna get killed as we journey across this harsh terrain we'll face predators she's looking right at
02:13earth extreme heat and days without water I don't know if I've got enough for 24 hours we'll need to
02:18come together and learn to work with the wild not against it I want to prove that this planet still
02:23has unspoilt places of all shapes and sizes still left to fight for because it has never been more
02:29important for us to build up our relationship with the natural world and protect these last
02:34wildernesses at all costs this is unbelievably spectacular the last leg of our journey took us
02:50deep into the dense forests with a constant danger of elephants back in Hadza land rations were running
02:57dangerously low in a desperate food mission I put what I learned to the test this helped us reach
03:05Julius and Delali's special birthplace before celebrating with a feast thank you rested and
03:13resupplied we pushed on and finally reached the gateway to our biggest challenge the Serengeti we all think
03:20that we know the Serengeti but I think this is a way of really showing a part that you never
03:25get to
03:25see before and I can't wait to find out what that part is we're in Tanzania and in the final
03:35phase of
03:36this incredible journey so far it's taken us through wild forest had the dry lands and now we enter
03:43the iconic Serengeti National Park walking across parts where it's only the wildlife that roam we have
03:50to cross these endless plains to get to our destination and if we can pass through safely we'll
03:55reach Nagoro Goro climb into the highlands and finish at a sacred volcano as soon as we arrived here
04:03there's just so much wildlife the Serengeti you just realize just how huge it is it's vast feel incredibly
04:12lucky to be able to have the permission to be walking through the heart of it like this where so
04:19few
04:19people get to see absolutely mind-blowing the Serengeti is iconic to Tanzania and the country's oldest
04:30national park it's one of the most important ecosystems on the planet home to some of the
04:35last free roaming wildlife migrations on earth people travel from all over the world to see the
04:41Serengeti but usually from the safety of a vehicle on the dirt roads we're in a far more remote area
04:48and
04:48we well we're on foot making us completely exposed to its predators and that means we have to take
05:03precautions so we've crossed the threshold of the Serengeti now and Julius has just picked up the weapon
05:10the gun for protection and he's also swapped for a smaller rucksack just so he has more flexibility
05:17um if we were needing to go into action the weapon is a last resort and even then it's no
05:26guarantee
05:26really we must keep our wits about us and avoid ever using it it's a lot of places to hide
05:33around
05:34here for the predators they're everywhere Winnes isn't calming my nerves he's just the predators
05:41they're everywhere it's just a matter of do we spot them hopefully we spot them first going for a wee
05:49in the Serengeti while you're walking is there feeling a little bit like your prey
06:07and you just love love being with the wildlife yes yeah well we're good we're glad to have your
06:13tracking skills
06:27that's the thing about the wild like most of the time they're probably going to think what the hell
06:32is that human doing on fur never seen that before and hopefully they'll get out of the way
06:39just got to be ready for the off chance that they don't get out of the way
06:44you know that when in one field of view you've got like the wildebeest you've got the zebra
06:49you've got pumba by pumba I mean warthog you know that the predators are also around here
06:56um I say that with a smile but constantly looking out for the big one is of course lion but
07:03then
07:03you've got the leopards and yeah it's really cool that you can just walk amongst the wildlife
07:17amazing
07:25so I don't know if you can see behind me but there is a huge line a few kilometers long
07:29of wildebeest
07:30coming from the northern part of Tanzania down to here looking for the fresh grass the migration
07:36continues every year nearly two million wildebeest migrate in a vast loop across east africa following
07:44the rains and fresh grass right now they're passing here and wherever they go everything else sort of
07:50follows the lions they don't migrate they wait and let the herds of prey come to them us moving on
07:58foot
07:59means we're not separate from that system we're just another presence moving through it and that
08:04puts us in danger for those waiting lions long grass in the serengeti and the heat
08:17getting low on water it is hot work
08:23we're all really thirsty and I've been sort of hallucinating as I've been walking
08:29we've got to make camp before I start hallucinating even more
08:33oh it is so hot and you have the choice to make whether you're in your tent just away from
08:40the flies and
08:41the horse flies biting insects but sweltering or outside where it's still sweltering there's a tiny
08:47bit of breeze but then you get bitten by these massive horse flies overall
08:56and if horse flies weren't bad enough I've got another problem I think I have just got
09:03the urine infection which is going to be very annoying
09:14we filter all our water and that means we don't have to be too fussy with where it comes from
09:21with our water running low the search is on for our next source
09:25we've been living in the wild for over 30 days
09:28and so far finding it hasn't been an issue we're relying on juliet's tracking skills to lead us to
09:33some but out here that comes with its own risks
09:36we have to be very quiet because we think there might be some big crocodiles
09:56it just went into the water big big big one I think I just missed it
10:03very big
10:07it's too dangerous to collect water here we're going to have to find somewhere else
10:13and it doesn't take long for julius to find more clues to another source
10:18what's this julius
10:19what's this julius
10:20tracking of hippo
10:22tracking of hippo
10:23yes
10:25yeah
10:28that's the thing in dry season everything will be drawn to the water
10:31including us
10:33so we have to keep on our guard
10:36so if we do come across a hippo
10:38we need to be very careful because
10:41they are the third largest land mammal on earth
10:46but they are pretty much the number one most dangerous
10:49they kill like 500 people in Africa every year
10:56and they can run fast
10:58so they're not only good in water they can run very quickly
11:01I've never ever seen hippos in the wild
11:04in fact I don't think I've seen hippos before
11:10I don't know if today's going to be the day or not
11:14I think we're getting close to water
11:17which means we're probably getting close to other animals now
11:28oh my god
11:31there's loads of hippos
11:48that's so big
11:52didn't just find the water
11:53we found not just one hippo
11:56but all the hippos
11:59what do you think Moses
12:09and so our water collecting has been made far more dangerous than expected
12:16it's an incredible sight
12:18but hippos are fiercely territorial
12:21and they can turn in an instant
12:22we keep our distance
12:24but we have to get down to the water somehow
12:28with the others on watch
12:29I find a small area where it's clear
12:31and make a dart for it
12:38okay well
12:40we've got some water
12:41we're getting away from the hippos now
12:43and go find somewhere to camp
12:45now that we're in the Serengeti
12:47and yeah
12:51we really are where the wild things are now
13:08the Serengeti is 30,000 square kilometres
13:11that's the size of Belgium
13:13it's home to some of Africa's most formidable wildlife
13:16and after getting past the hippos
13:18we're immediately confronted by another threat
13:22there's a huge herd
13:24of elephants
13:26right in front of us
13:27having close encounters with elephants
13:29but never actually seeing them properly
13:31until now
13:33okay they have a baby
13:35so
13:36obviously they're going to be protective of that baby
13:39Julius is in front
13:42just trying to figure out a way to get
13:44get by
13:46they're going this way
13:48so they might pass us
13:50yeah so we wait until they go from that direction
13:54yeah
13:54and for us we can just keep walking
13:56yeah
13:56yeah
13:58oh yeah they are coming aren't they
14:00yeah we're in their way
14:03we know when they want to charge
14:05they'll use those tusks with accuracy
14:08we're gonna give them some space
14:10because they have young
14:13and we know what elephants are capable of
14:19and this is our camp for tonight
14:21picked our tree to camp underneath
14:25having a little chill
14:27but this rest doesn't last long
14:31so we're having to move camp
14:33because even though that herd of elephants is a long way away
14:37we'd think they're heading down the valley
14:38towards where we're
14:41camped
14:43and you know
14:44we are in the wildlife area
14:45so
14:46you can't really escape wildlife
14:48that's one of the reasons we're here
14:50but
14:50we can at least get out of their way
14:55I have an idea to send the drone up
14:57to get a better feel of what we're dealing with
15:02the elephants have got quite a pace on
15:04we have to make sure we don't anger them
15:06but we need to move now
15:08otherwise they could come straight through our camp
15:11so we found a new place to camp
15:13just across the valley
15:15I don't know if it's any better
15:17it might be worse
15:18I guess we'll have to find out tonight
15:20but I guess it gives you peace of mind either way
15:25now we'll see what the night brings
15:27so goodnight
15:32we may be expecting elephants
15:34but here nothing is for certain
15:36there's one thing right here there
15:40not even kidding
15:41I just had mine right behind me
15:55that's really quite scary
15:58oh my god
16:11the noises of last night signal
16:13we're moving into a more dangerous area
16:15lion country
16:17it's quite something when you're lying in your tent
16:19with your head to the ground
16:22and then you've got lions like
16:25communicating around you
16:26and you just have to stay still
16:30oh we've got to go that way today
16:33see how much distance we can cover
16:35at the moment we can see quite well
16:39I think there's going to be some bits
16:41dips where we've got to be careful
16:43of the animals lurking
16:51good
16:53sunning
16:54sunning
16:54yeah the sun
16:56is here
17:01we're watching elk for animals
17:03with every step
17:04but I didn't expect to see this little one
17:08from tiny creatures like this tortoise
17:10to the tallest of them all
17:12the giraffe
17:12we try to get a little closer
17:14but they're right to be wary
17:16staying alert keeps them alive out here
17:21a giraffe's heart has to pump twice the normal pressure
17:24to just push blood up that long neck
17:26it's one of the most powerful hearts
17:27in the animal kingdom
17:35that's really cool
17:36they're amazing
17:44and then a jackal
17:46I'm already surprised by the sheer abundance of life here
17:49the serengeti is an example of how nature thrives
17:52when we protect it
17:56I think it's a warthog
17:58yeah
17:58what is
17:59there we go
18:02that richness of life also tells you something else
18:05it's exactly the kind of place that draws in predators
18:08like lions
18:09the lion footprint
18:11yeah lion footprint
18:13oh wow
18:15it's massive
18:16it is massive
18:18only in the serengeti you would wake up
18:20and see a lion footprint
18:22and not be too surprised
18:25it's a lot of greenery and foliage to hide around here
18:30this bit
18:31it's very lush
18:34rich
18:36yes
18:36is it
18:37down
18:37which girl
18:38there
18:39he's sleeping
18:40yeah
18:41how did you spot that
18:44it's amazing that you saw it in the first place
18:46yes
18:47how did you see him
18:48yeah
18:49we walked
18:50and then he
18:50you know
18:52experience of
18:53wilderness of jungle
18:57we stay downwind of the sleeping lion
18:59knowing all too well
19:01that there could be more
19:02just out of view
19:05what do you do when there's a pride of lions
19:07in your path
19:10julius is taking every precaution
19:12flower in hand
19:13just in case we need to warn it off
19:18there's a lion
19:19there's a lion
19:20there's a lion
19:22that's quite terrifying
19:25luckily
19:26he's startled enough to run away
19:27and it's just the one
19:30yeah
19:30for now
19:33a male
19:34usually means lionesses
19:35aren't too far away
19:38very big
19:39very big
19:43this is mad
19:44just
19:48what's gonna happen
19:49but
19:49moving through the serengeti
19:52and like
19:52having to walk
19:54past
19:55prides of lions
19:56it's just
19:58gets your heart racing
20:00it's mental
20:02you need to be really careful
20:04of this long grass
20:05because like
20:06pride of lions
20:07could just be
20:08sitting in front of us
20:10and we wouldn't know
20:12if it wasn't for the team
20:13I would have walked
20:14right on top of that lion's torso
20:16and it would have been
20:17game over
20:19I do my best
20:20to stay on the lookout
20:20but honestly
20:21in this phase
20:22of the expedition
20:23my life is very much
20:25in my teammates hands
20:27and now
20:27Julius has spotted
20:29something else
20:32lion cubs
20:33they may look sweet
20:34but this is a very dangerous
20:36situation to be in
20:38where's mum
20:39you see it
20:40yeah
20:44we'd been meters
20:45from her
20:46before realizing
20:49the wind direction
20:50is changing
20:51so we've got to
20:51get out of it
20:53because if that mum
20:54wakes up
20:54we're in trouble
20:57the cubs watch
21:04do you know where mum is
21:06we're staring right off
21:08she's awake
21:09we've got to move
21:10but we can't run
21:16it's charging
21:21as soon as she woke up
21:22it was like
21:23go time
21:29woohoo
21:29woo
21:30woo
21:31turns out I'm not the only one
21:33who smiles when I'm nervous
21:34Moses definitely does too
21:42Julius
21:42thank you again
21:43for protecting us
21:44today
21:45yes
21:45you're welcome
21:47but
21:47it was very good
21:49if we are no strong
21:50hard
21:51yeah
21:56if we are charging
21:59and serious coming
22:01maybe to action
22:02yeah I know
22:02you were great
22:03it was
22:05thank you
22:06for protecting us
22:07yes
22:07you're welcome
22:08we weren't eaten
22:09by the lions
22:10today
22:10yes
22:14it's really nice
22:15I think
22:15Julius
22:16now that he's
22:17got the
22:18the weapon
22:19and
22:20yeah he's
22:21the animal tracker
22:21this is his
22:23his forte
22:24so to speak
22:25and he's really
22:26found a purpose
22:27and he's really like
22:29going
22:29let's see it in his eyes
22:31which is really good
22:31because I really
22:32we needed him
22:33for this part
22:35especially
22:35it would be so dangerous
22:37not to go
22:38imagine if I was here
22:39without the team
22:39that would be
22:40yeah
22:41it wouldn't be good
22:42everyone has a role
22:42to play here
22:43so
22:43we're all doing a role
22:46and
22:47yeah Delalia and Moses
22:48are getting on
22:49like a treat
22:49they're like
22:50formed a brotherhood
22:52an unlikely brotherhood
22:53from two different tribes
22:54which is rather lovely
22:55because at first
22:56I think there's a little bit of
22:57who are you
22:59you know
22:59where are you from
23:00but they've found so much
23:01common ground
23:01which is great
23:02and then Winnis
23:03he's smiling
23:05he's um
23:05I think he's starting to
23:07sort of
23:07look forward to
23:10when we get out of danger
23:12because it's dangerous here
23:13it is
23:14the danger has stepped
23:15up a notch
23:17got my machete
23:18I've always been sleeping
23:19with my machete
23:20next to me
23:21um
23:23I don't know if I could
23:24do anything in time
23:25but
23:26it's there
23:41I'm asking Moses to do his magic
23:43near me tonight
23:45because
23:46it's a little bit scary
23:47having seen all the lions
23:49and now hearing them
23:50all around us
23:59it feels very very different
24:02tonight
24:03because we're
24:05deep in the Serengeti
24:07it feels a bit further away
24:09from
24:09safety
24:11and
24:12there's lions
24:13everywhere
24:14this is pride land
24:16I've made sure I watched
24:17where Moses did his magic
24:20I need everything I can
24:21get right now
24:34you see
24:35you see all the lions
24:37stay stay stay
24:40lions pass in the close vicinity
24:42there
24:42all I can do is put faith
24:44into Moses' magic
24:50Moses thank you for doing your magic
24:52did you pick it up
24:54stick
24:54yeah
24:55thank you
24:56the lion
24:57yeah
24:58stayed away
25:01down to the magic
25:02I think
25:03honestly there's something to it
25:08there's a feeling of nervous energy in the air now
25:10prides of lions seem to be getting closer to us as every day goes by
25:16and it's not only lions we need to be worried about
25:23a scorpion that could kill you
25:26Julius
25:27your eyesight is amazing
25:29yes
25:30you're very very good
25:32amazing
25:33I think I would be dead without you
25:35yeah
25:38Winner's finding a not so lucky Cape Buffalo skull
25:41we don't want to end up like this one if we can help it
25:43yeah that's gonna pin you down
25:46the big bull
25:47I think I heard some lions in that direction
25:49we've come from that direction
25:51where we know there are lions
25:53but the wind is going in this direction
25:58so they shouldn't know that we're here anymore
26:05straight away
26:07we have just found
26:09a beautiful huge lioness on the top of a rock
26:13what does that remind you of?
26:18I might be happy to see her far away and high on this rock
26:21but the feeling doesn't appear mutual
26:25oh that was a warning
26:27don't get too close
26:29she's rightly protective of her cubs
26:31but something doesn't seem right here
26:33the cubs are incredibly thin
26:35and appear weak
26:37we need to move away from this pride quickly
26:39but seeing this dead cub
26:41is a stark reminder of what dry season brings
26:45in this pride's territory
26:46there's little water
26:47and even less prey
26:48if the lions can't even survive
26:51how will we?
26:56we came across a pride of lions
26:58from a distance
27:00and they were so weak
27:01like so obviously weak
27:03and then we came across
27:04a dead cub
27:07who had just starved to death
27:08or dehydrated both
27:10just 10-20 minutes before
27:13we were looking for a place to camp
27:14not knowing they were there
27:16and if they had come to camp
27:20I don't know if we'd still be
27:22I reckon already by now
27:24it's 8pm
27:24we would have been eaten
27:27tonight
27:28all we can do is hope
27:29that the lions stay away
27:31and we can sleep in peace
27:48I can't make a sound
27:50there's a lion just outside of my tent
28:07there's 10
28:12can I get the
28:15hang on
28:22there they are
28:25oh there's loads of them
28:28oh god
28:32yeah
28:33whoa
28:36he's right by camp
28:38there he is
28:39there he is
28:45oh my god
28:46he's just looking at us
28:50we thought that was the last of them
28:51but things were about to get even worse
29:02the lions coming into camp
29:04was terrifying
29:05but it didn't end there
29:07that night
29:08another pride walked right up to our tents
29:10a male lion plonked himself
29:12between mine and Julius and Delali's tent
29:14and roared at our heads
29:15for a whole two minutes
29:17I couldn't risk reaching for the camera
29:19I froze
29:20and stayed silent
29:21exactly how I was taught to
29:23one small movement
29:25could have looked like a challenge
29:26and you don't challenge a whole pride
29:30honestly
29:31I am just
29:32happy
29:33to wake up alive
29:34that was probably the single scariest thing
29:37I've ever had to go through
29:40it was
29:41it was lions
29:43right there
29:45everyone
29:46breathed a collective sigh of relief
29:49once they had
29:50passed through
29:52I started to think
29:53feeling really guilty
29:55to my parents
29:56that
29:58I was gonna
30:00get eaten by an actual
30:03literal lion
30:05honestly
30:05let's get out of the Serengeti
30:08there's too many lions here
30:11oh my god
30:12did you hear the lion?
30:13did I hear the lion?
30:14they passed here
30:15I know
30:16I'm very very aware
30:18because I could hear the footsteps
30:23right here
30:23so our tents are here
30:25and it went here
30:26it worked?
30:29you tapped him
30:31what did he say?
30:33what did he say?
30:33I touched him
30:33and he said
30:34daddy
30:34can I pass you?
30:37yeah
30:38afterwards
30:38afterwards
30:39everyone was like
30:40whoa
30:44there we go
30:46that was pretty close though
30:48yes
30:48very close
30:49it came
30:50the door of 10
30:52yeah
30:52door of 10
30:531.5 meter
30:55oh
30:57oh
30:58oh
31:01is that what Delali said?
31:03oh good
31:04oh good
31:05he tapped you
31:07and he just said
31:08be quiet
31:08be quiet
31:09so he just
31:11be quiet
31:13yeah
31:14right next to us
31:20it was amazing
31:23I love that you were like
31:24shut up
31:25just be quiet
31:29that is such a cool sight
31:31all the night time terrors
31:33that we had
31:33have gone away
31:34with that sunrise
31:45it's our last morning
31:46in the Serengeti
31:46and it's time
31:47for one last look
31:48at this oasis
31:49before we head
31:50into the dry highlands
31:53wow
31:54this place really is a paradise
31:57this is unbelievably spectacular
32:02to be here alone
32:04walking on foot
32:05in this wilderness
32:06it's hard
32:07it's dangerous
32:08but boy
32:10this makes it
32:11like
32:11oh
32:12this makes it worth it
32:14it's so cool
32:26the Serengeti blew my expectations
32:28wide open
32:29it's a paradise here
32:31and it shows just how resilient nature is
32:33and how fiercely it can flourish
32:35if we give it a chance
32:37but the Serengeti
32:38has two sides
32:39the beauty
32:40and the brutal effort
32:42it takes to move through it
32:44I'm a bit concerned about the team
32:46everyone's had such an adrenaline filled
32:48time here
32:49the next one's just going to be hard
32:51and we really just need to
32:53stick it out
32:54work as a team
32:55and get to the finish point
32:58then we would have done this
32:59amazing expedition
33:03we've walked over 100km
33:05through the Serengeti
33:06and now we have 50km
33:08for our final phase
33:09in the most challenging terrain
33:12we're leaving this area
33:13of abundance of resources
33:14and heading into the really dry
33:16and highlands
33:17you can already feel like
33:19it's getting less
33:20green
33:21and less
33:22idyllic
33:23harder
33:24to survive
33:25less wildlife
33:26and way more barren
33:30no water
33:31no water at all
33:32no
33:33every water
33:35thirsty
33:37I'm so thirsty
33:38that's all we got left
33:39it's only got
33:41and you can see the colour of this water
33:43it's bad
33:43very bad
33:44but
33:45I'll just have one sip
33:47because I don't know
33:49how long we're going to walk
33:50until we find a place
33:51where
33:51we can refill it
33:53to walk for another place
33:55find another place
33:56to find water
33:57yeah
33:58because here
34:00sometimes we die
34:01no water
34:03there is no fresh water
34:04it's salt water
34:05yeah
34:05oh it's salt water
34:06salt water
34:07okay
34:07because this is like a volcanic
34:10area
34:11okay
34:12oh my god
34:13new challenge
34:15right
34:19the change of terrain here is wild
34:22it's like we walked into a desert
34:24and it is so hot
34:30just walked across that
34:34walking on sand
34:36dust
34:37grey sand
34:38just making everything
34:41as you can imagine
34:42a lot harder
34:45we're starting to think that
34:46it might be
34:49another 24 hours
34:50until we find any water
34:53which is
34:55quite worrying
34:57the mouth is like
34:59formed that seal around it
35:02we've got a bit left
35:04but
35:05I don't know if we've got enough
35:07for 24 hours
35:10it's very very dry
35:12I thought it was going to be cooler
35:13because we've gained height
35:14but
35:15it just feels like we're getting closer to the sun
35:19so we might just have to go hungry
35:20because water's more important
35:22but there's no water
35:24just being down there
35:25being over here
35:27it must be
35:28deep underground somewhere
35:32with dark thoughts on our mind
35:34our conversation
35:35turns to death
35:37I want to ask Julius
35:38what I had to believe
35:39when people pass away
35:41like do you just die
35:42or do you do you have to believe
35:44in afterlife
35:46ah cool
35:47that's what I
35:48yeah
35:49I'm not
35:51yeah
35:53I guess my mind drifts to home
35:55and I've tried really hard
35:57to build the life
35:57that I want
35:59which is
36:01yeah I feel so grateful for
36:03really
36:04that's really what I wanted to say
36:07like
36:08I like my life
36:09I feel very privileged
36:10to be able to say that
36:12and I won't speak about it anymore
36:14because I'll get upset
36:17I'm going to try and tackle this hair
36:19because otherwise
36:22I'm going to have to have a shade off
36:28tomorrow we need to find water
36:30because if we don't
36:32it is not looking good
36:42wet wet wash
36:49the tough phase continues
36:51we're headed
36:53to try and get up
36:54and over here
36:56because we think there could be water around here
37:00I know I can feel
37:01my body is dehydrated already
37:04let's go
37:11we're on our final push
37:12with just 50 kilometers to go
37:14until we reach our finish point
37:15at the top of an active volcano
37:17but if we don't find any water
37:19we won't be able to even make it close
37:24and I
37:26haven't quite reached the point
37:27where I'll be drinking my own pee yet
37:30but watch the space
37:32the land is getting greener
37:34there must be water somewhere
37:36even a trickle would be life saving
37:39all the signs point that there is water
37:41because of people coming from miles
37:44with their cattle
37:45I thought it was going to be like a trickle of water
37:48I didn't expect like this
37:51like wow
37:54that's incredible
38:02it's hard to believe that after four days without any water
38:05this is here at 3,000 meters of altitude
38:11clean algae
38:13can't wait to drink from that
38:16water
38:17from our filter
38:22and we're done
38:25yes
38:31maasai come from miles and miles with their livestock
38:33to get this water source
38:35should find out if there's hippos and crocodiles in there though
38:38before I go
38:38get too excited
38:41we are in Africa after all
38:44so we've been talking to some maasai
38:46and we're not to swim in it
38:48because people have just disappeared
38:51we are, they'll die
38:52we've got a few more days Winnes
38:54then we'll have a shower
38:56and this is going to fuel us
38:57to get to the end
38:59so good
39:00team did really well today
39:01I'm proud of them
39:03good job team
39:05all the maasai have left now
39:08and so now the wild animals are coming for a drink
39:11and I'm going to say
39:13that by this point
39:14we are wild animals as well
39:22I have bites everywhere
39:26super itchy
39:29I've got bug bites all over my feet
39:31which when I'm walking
39:34it's like torture
39:35because you can't itch them
39:37my hand
39:44being at altitude
39:45we never thought we'd be back in this dense terrain
39:47we're just 20 kilometres from our end point
39:50the volcano
39:51but this is slowing us down
39:57didn't expect this today
40:01I'd hoped finding water would cheer everyone up
40:03but being back in this forest
40:05is testing all of us
40:07even Winnes
40:08he looks like he's hit a wall
40:10he is tired
40:12so I just need to make sure he's rested today as well
40:15because it's not over till it's over
40:18so I can't take our eye off the ball
40:20you okay Winnes?
40:22huh?
40:23you okay?
40:24only if I like to hit it
40:25oh no
40:26yeah but I think it's a little bit weird
40:31Winnes has been so positive
40:33this whole expedition
40:34but this seems to be his breaking point
40:39we're almost done
40:40and it's been six very long weeks
40:45it's been hard
40:47it's just been hard
40:49I'm tired
40:51my mind is really tired
40:55and soon we'll be home
41:02they've lasted all this time
41:04let's see
41:06okay
41:07okay
41:13oh perfect it fits
41:18you see the guy?
41:20yeah
41:20yeah
41:22that's our final destination
41:23yes
41:25big mountain
41:26actually it's not a mountain
41:28it's an active volcano
41:30when will it erupt?
41:31hopefully not the day that we climb it
41:33we're crossing over the Great Rift Valley
41:35the volcano, Mount Langai
41:37is getting closer
41:40wow
41:41check that
41:43walking on like volcanic dust
41:45which is hard going
41:57this is the terns in the air
41:59you don't get to see
42:01woohoo
42:09I'm trying to get an early night
42:10because we're climbing in a few hours
42:12and I just wanted to say
42:13yeah
42:14this is it
42:15the final push
42:17and
42:20just battle ready
42:21this is just go, go, go team
42:24so we're going to do this as a team
42:25we started this as a team
42:26we're going to finish it as a team
42:29and
42:31yeah
42:35catch up with you soon
42:39Moses
42:40you ready?
42:41let's do it
42:46to beat the scorching heat
42:48we're setting off at midnight
42:49Mount Langai is almost 3,000 metres
42:52and it'll take us all night
42:53to reach the summit
42:55and with any luck
42:56we'll get there for sunrise
43:03it is
43:05smelly
43:06rotten eggs
43:07with sulphur
43:09very, very smelly
43:11these are almost
43:12almost at the top now
43:20and
43:21ta-da
43:21done
43:25you did it
43:30Julius, you did it
43:33too tired to celebrate
43:34the sun is about to come out
43:43yeah, we have done it
43:45we have officially completed
43:47the expedition
43:48we have done it
43:54woo
43:55woo
43:57woo
43:57woo
43:58woo
43:59woo
44:00we did it
44:02woo
44:03woo
44:04woo
44:05amazing
44:05yeah
44:06a very hard mountain
44:09to climb
44:09hmm
44:10it's a nice thing to share
44:12with your son
44:13yes, yes
44:14you'll remember it forever
44:15you'll remember
44:16like all of
44:17but the whole journey
44:18yes
44:19big adventure
44:20big adventure
44:21big adventure
44:22yes
44:22very big adventure
44:25yes
44:25I feel good
44:26and
44:27it's a long, long journey
44:29long journey
44:30yeah
44:30long, long way
44:32but
44:33we're successful
44:34I cannot explain it
44:36how happy I am
44:37this day
44:38I was just waiting
44:39for a long time
44:40are you proud of yourself?
44:42I am very proud of myself
44:43I am very proud of the team
44:45I am very proud of Lucy
44:46I am very extremely happy
44:48I can just say
44:49three laps of two
44:50absolutely
44:52yeah
44:52to finish this
44:54this expedition pushed us more than we could have ever expected
44:57I began as the outsider
44:59learning to live with the land and with the people whose knowledge runs deep
45:03and out here I realised something important
45:05the wild?
45:07it doesn't judge
45:08I come from a different background
45:10and hey
45:10even Moses didn't know any of the team before meeting
45:13but none of that mattered
45:15what mattered was how we moved together
45:17and watching Julius and Dilali
45:19father and son
45:20take on this journey
45:21showed me a strength that you just can't fake
45:23we crossed forests, dry lands, mountains and the Serengeti
45:27places so alive yet so fragile
45:30and the wild's quiet authority was always with us
45:34and respecting it kept us safe
45:36this journey reminded me just how resilient nature is
45:39and how quickly it can disappear without protection
45:43if I've learnt anything
45:44it's that we already have the tools to make a difference
45:47modern knowledge, ancient wisdom and the choice to act
45:51this has been a story about the wild
45:53not as something to conquer
45:54but as a teacher
45:55and a reminder that there's still so much left to fight for
45:59six weeks of this great team
46:02it's just, it's rekindled my love
46:05and it's always in such awe of these wild places
46:09it's been so diverse and so, so impressive
46:13and I think we should all just work hard
46:18to protect the delicate balance of these wild places
46:22because they're out there
46:24people live in them
46:27and we need to do everything we can to protect them
47:00of these wild places
47:03have a chance
