00:27For most of us, the idea of
00:29catching lunch whilst being viciously stung by African killer bees seems unlikely.
00:36Because today, more than half of us live in cities.
00:41We've traded open horizons for walls and left just a handful of people still living by the land.
00:47They're the Earth's original explorers, the nomads, and as their land disappears, so does their way of life.
00:54It would be easy to believe that there's no area left still classed as truly wild.
01:00But you'd be wrong.
01:01There are still majestic pockets of land that are rugged, wild and teeming with life.
01:06We've found not just one hippo, but all the hippos.
01:11Wow.
01:12This is the Tanzania you don't get to see.
01:15And the critical thing is, we need them for the health of our planet.
01:18I'm Lucy, and I'm an explorer.
01:20I've been leading expeditions all over the world for over a decade.
01:24And now, I'm on a mission to take you with me.
01:27I've journeyed to some of the world's most distant corners.
01:30But this time, I'm trying to cross one of Africa's last great wildernesses on foot.
01:35A route that only a few have traveled, and never in this way.
01:38Once in a lifetime experience.
01:40I feel like I've just stepped into a world.
01:42I'm just trying to keep up.
01:43I want to show you the beauty.
01:45This place really is a paradise.
01:47The surprising.
01:48There's lots of African killer bees.
01:49This is mad.
01:51And the downright terrifying.
01:53Oh my god.
01:54I'll be joined by those who still live by the land.
01:56True nomadic hunter-gatherers.
01:58And learn how they're adapting in a world that's changing fast.
02:01I'm gonna have to get used to the fact things are gonna get killed.
02:04As we journey across this harsh terrain, we'll face predators.
02:08She's looking right at us.
02:10Extreme heat and days without water.
02:12I don't know if we've got enough for 24 hours.
02:14We'll need to come together and learn to work with the wild, not against it.
02:18I want to prove that this planet still has unspoilt places of all shapes and sizes still left to fight
02:23for.
02:24Because it has never been more important for us to build up our relationship with the natural world.
02:29And protect these last wildernesses at all costs.
02:32This is unbelievably spectacular.
02:44The expedition got underway as I joined the Hadza.
02:47The people who live by ancient traditions of hunting and gathering.
02:50Having to learn very, very quickly how to build a shelter like the Hadza do.
02:55Okay, we're running.
02:56It wasn't long before the dangers of the bush revealed themselves.
02:59I was put to the test, learning the ways of the hunt.
03:05I suppose we're eating monkeys tonight then.
03:07And proving my worth as I harvested honey from Africa's aggressive killer bees.
03:12Oh, thank you for teaching.
03:14Our journey then began as we tackled our first mountain.
03:17It's just a reminder of what's to come.
03:20Because up here, mountains, down there, dangerous wildlife.
03:32Let's go.
03:50We're in East Africa, in Tanzania, journeying on foot through one of Africa's last great wildernesses and home to all
03:57the creatures that make this continent iconic.
03:59From lions to elephants to hyenas.
04:02We're about 60 kilometres into our journey.
04:04And right now, we're making our way through one of the few wild forests left.
04:08And it doesn't take long for Julius, expert animal tracker, to spot something.
04:13Let's go.
04:14Let's go.
04:18Elephant dangs here.
04:21Oh, yeah.
04:23Elephant.
04:23Elephant dang.
04:24Yeah.
04:26That's a fresh elephant dang right here.
04:32And, yeah, pretty scary.
04:37Ah, so there's water there.
04:39So the elephants have come.
04:40You can literally see their footprints.
04:44Yeah.
04:44So clear.
04:48Is that elephant bed?
04:49Elephant.
04:50Is that where they lay?
04:51Yeah, the elephant.
04:52They lay down.
04:53And they eat.
04:55Yeah.
04:58Gentle giants from afar, but up close they can be deadly.
05:01And just a few months ago, two people were killed here.
05:05That's why we moved quietly.
05:06But in a forest this dense, it would be easy to stumble across them.
05:11It's been a heavy pack day coming down the mountain and then now here.
05:16And, I mean, it's beautiful.
05:18Kind of ancient forest with beautiful moss and kind of mystical, really.
05:22And it would be made much better if there wasn't elephants in here.
05:28But there are elephants in here.
05:30And even though it's great to be down from the mountain,
05:33I can't say I'm, like, ecstatic about this phase.
05:38I'm actually quite a bit anxious about it, to be honest.
05:41Sometimes this elephant for this area, they are very aggressive.
05:46Because all around this forest, there are villages, farms area.
05:51And elephants smelling beans, farms.
05:54They get angry.
05:55Yeah.
05:56We're going to eat and come.
05:59Yeah.
06:04And elephant, I don't like.
06:08Okay.
06:08Is that why you have the whistle?
06:10A whistle for images.
06:13But I know we will try tomorrow to walk.
06:16If we are sea, we will try to, for experience.
06:20If we are not aggressive...
06:23They will leave us.
06:24We will try.
06:24Yeah.
06:25We will try.
06:26Yes.
06:28Julius has given me a clear reminder of the real dangers we face doing this on foot.
06:33But it's not just elephants that we need to be worried about.
06:37We try to find a place where it doesn't have a lot of tree.
06:40Why?
06:41If we camp under the big tree, then maybe the leopard will be somewhere there.
06:45Okay.
06:46Okay.
06:46So you have to basically weigh up.
06:48Do you want to be out in the open with the elephants, or do you want to be with the
06:52leopards jumping on your tent?
06:53Yes.
06:54We will find a place where it's safe.
06:56Yeah.
06:57How do you think Julius and Dalali and Moses feel?
07:00Scare.
07:01You think so?
07:02Yeah.
07:03The good thing is Moses bring his magic stick.
07:06Magic.
07:06Do you think he'll do that tonight?
07:07Yeah.
07:08So we've got some magic.
07:09I think we need that.
07:10I think we need that as well.
07:11Oh, I think we need some Moses magic tonight.
07:21about the time.
07:33Moses has been telling us about one of his Aki traditions,
07:37which is essentially magic, and it can make the camp
07:42disappear so that any predator or people anyone out to get us won't be able to see our camp so
07:49we can't go past that perimeter that he's made this sort of uh spell on i suppose so it's going
07:57to keep us safe tonight
08:22there's something like that
08:28can you hear that
08:35i don't know how i'm gonna go back to sleep
08:43oh it is fresh
08:49oh man it's fresh how can you tell it's fresh just by oh yeah yeah it is fresh oh man
08:55the elephants got close last night but thankfully they decided to stay away
09:00maybe moses's magic is working after all
09:07now it's time to get going and if we can make it another 60 kilometers
09:10we'll be able to be clear of this forest
09:12the foresty
09:17yeah forest
09:20very biggest forest
09:22it's a big forest
09:23ah yes
09:25what is it
09:27sharp
09:27sharp
09:28thank you
09:29if the animals don't get you out here the plants will
09:34i've been stinging
09:36you've been stinging everywhere
09:40stinging nettles everywhere
09:43are you okay with this
09:45yeah
09:48hey
10:08okay
10:11okay will we not filming that other bit
10:15ow
10:16oh it's funny
10:21it's tickly
10:26i'm good how are you your english just suddenly you come out with sentences
10:31mayelo
10:33what's that good for the tummy
10:45this forest is a world of its own lush and alive and it's one of the few places still holding
10:50back
10:51the drought thousands of people still depend on this forest to survive for water for wood and for
10:56grazing land but those same needs are taking their toll trees are being illegally felled for timber
11:02and firewood and communities are burning whole sections and deforesting to make room for livestock
11:08without forests like this the rivers dry up the soil turns to dust and life here just becomes impossible
11:15so
11:29tired today are you good yeah i'm good yeah
11:31yeah
11:32no hiking but
11:34we are good because i think we have more energy
11:37you're explorers
11:38yeah
11:43how the hell are you cutting your nail with a machete
11:46i am oddly amazed by this
11:53forget the nail scissors use machetes for your for your toenails
11:58getting the natural toothbrush
12:00yes
12:03second stage of toothbrushing
12:04yes
12:06the brush very good
12:08very good
12:11how do you know the english for that
12:14natural toothbrush
12:27good morning the weather outside is pretty terrible so we're just waiting for it to hope
12:33visibility to get better because we wouldn't be able to see anything any animals if we left now and
12:40it's wet and we don't have that wood the guys don't have waterproof looking forward to getting into
12:47the warmer climates which should be in a few days we all need a bit of that we'll need to
12:54get into
12:54those warmer climates also so we can hunt again but we can recoup our supplies because our rations are running
13:01low
13:05we can't wait any longer for the weather to improve now we're moving into denser forest which
13:10means we're even more vulnerable to our biggest threat elephants the mist adds to the feeling of
13:18vulnerability like the forest is watching holding a quiet kind of authority so we are literally just
13:26following an elephant trail
13:30because it is the best we can do because otherwise it's just so dense
13:38i don't know how we're going to find a way through this without
13:42coming across the elephants
13:46elephants are close
13:49we don't need to make noise
13:51okay if we do come across an elephant and it's aggressive then
13:56the best thing you can do is try and put something between you and the elephant
14:02so just being aware of all the big trees around
14:07moving in forest isn't my team's natural environment i can tell they're nervous as am i
14:23it's in the elephant here this morning so it's like around this area there's another big elephant
14:32reconcile
14:42so
14:48so
14:49so
14:50The elephant is running out.
14:56They've come by three.
15:00Four of elephants.
15:04Ssss.
15:06There's both.
15:09Lela! Lela!
15:12Lela!
15:13Lela!
15:14Lela!
15:15Lela!
15:18Lela!
15:20Lela!
15:21Lela!
15:23Lela!
15:30Lela!
15:33Lela!
15:34We've run into an elephant.
15:35All we can do is get high and wait it out.
15:38Lela!
15:39Lela!
15:40Lela!
15:41Lela!
15:42Lela!
15:42Lela!
15:42Lela!
15:43Lela!
15:45It's gone.
15:46That was close.
15:47Lela!
15:48Lela!
15:49Lela!
15:52Lela!
15:53That's a way to get your heart pumping.
16:05This terrain is relentless and we're only covering a measly six kilometres per day.
16:10We've still 14 more to go until we're out of the forest.
16:14And with the weight of the rucksacks, the long days and now the close elephant encounter,
16:18we're all feeling worn out.
16:22This forest is pretty intimidating.
16:34The forest is going to be tough going for the next few days.
16:37And I just hope the team will cope.
16:40It's a little bit worrying that they're this exhausted.
16:43I mean, I know they're not used to carrying this weight, but it's so crazy, isn't it?
16:47Because Julius and Dalali will walk 50 kilometres in a day.
16:52Not think of anything of it.
16:54But in this terrain, with the bags.
16:58Oh my God.
16:58Okay, I'm going to have to go.
16:59I need the loo.
17:00Oh.
17:02I hope that's not me getting ill.
17:04Yep.
17:05That was me having diarrhoea.
17:07And actually saying that.
17:08I think I need to go again.
17:12I don't need to feel messy.
17:15It's not good to get sick this early on.
17:18Push through it.
17:20So to speak.
17:22Getting sick out here isn't ideal.
17:24Though I can't let it slow me down.
17:26The longer we stay in this forest, the greater the risk for all of us.
17:38I am very ready to get out from the forest.
17:40What's it been like?
17:42Scared.
17:44Moses.
17:45Mum.
17:46Did you say mum?
17:47Yeah, mum.
17:48Oh no.
17:49Shall we go?
17:51Shall we go?
17:52Okay.
17:53Yeah.
17:54Today maybe to go outside of the forest, yes.
17:58We've got to get out.
17:58Yeah, we've got to get out now.
17:59This is very dangerous.
18:02Very dangerous forest.
18:05Let's get out of here.
18:14Thankfully I'm feeling better and we're finally leaving the forest.
18:18Heading into terrain where it should be easier to move and make progress.
18:23Goodbye.
18:24Goodbye.
18:27With the wet, misty forest behind us, we now enter the dry Hadza land.
18:31We've got to walk 40 kilometres through here and we'll reach our resupply.
18:36In the meantime, I'm hoping we'll be able to gather some food.
18:40After all, this is the kind of environment that Julius and Delali are used to.
18:45Everyone feels more at home here.
18:47Yeah.
18:50Julius has been busy.
18:52He had successfully found two Hadza men who are going to be escorting us through this area.
18:58And we're following them right now at a great pace.
19:02I might add, going to help us a little bit figure this place out because our rations are so low
19:08now.
19:08So it's going to be a case of using the Hadza survival skills, putting what I've learned to the test.
19:16But first, having to get used to these spiky, spiky bushes everywhere and trees.
19:35Ah, so we've just spotted some tubers so we can get some food.
19:43Our energy has been getting so low and we've been getting weaker.
19:47So this food comes just in time.
19:52You're going straight in for it.
19:55Is it obvious that we've run out of rations?
20:00Lots of water in it.
20:02Yeah.
20:03So what have you found, Julius?
20:05Like bubblegum.
20:07Bubblegum?
20:08Yeah.
20:15Natural bubblegum.
20:16Yeah.
20:20It tastes minty.
20:23Natural bubblegum actually has a minty taste.
20:28But chewing gum isn't going to sustain us for long.
20:31But then, we strike gold.
20:34Is it baobao tree?
20:36Yeah.
20:36That's how you see.
20:37We can go have shade under the baobao tree.
20:42The baobao tree is known as the tree of life.
20:46And out here, it really earns the name.
20:48Among other things, it gives shade, stores water, and its fruit is packed with nutrients.
20:54Ooh.
20:54Is it?
20:55A little bit bitter, but it's very good.
20:58Chew it and then spit it up.
21:00Yeah, chew until...
21:01Mmm.
21:01Oh, let's go.
21:03Mmm.
21:05Like a sweep.
21:07Moses is getting into it.
21:08Hmm?
21:08Having some breakfast.
21:14We think there could be a bee's nest, but it's high up in the tree, and the guys have suggested
21:19that it should be me who climbs it.
21:21Of course.
21:23The guys have gone, made lots of pegs, so I don't know how far I was thinking that I'm going
21:29to make it up there.
21:30Yeah, very high.
21:32Yeah.
21:34The Hadza have been using this method of pegs to climb up to look for honey and more fruit for
21:38thousands of years.
21:39And it works surprisingly well.
21:44The Hadza has been using this method of pegs to climb up to look for honey and more fruit for
21:50thousands of years.
21:51And it works surprisingly well.
21:56Yes, yes, yes!
21:58Oh!
22:00Yes, yes, yes!
22:00Yes, yes, yes!
22:02Oh!
22:03Ah!
22:04Ah!
22:05Turns out, no bees nest.
22:06So the hunt must go on.
22:08What's this?
22:11You need a mallet to climb the baobao tree.
22:14And this man knows how to use a mallet.
22:17Yes.
22:19Come on, honey.
22:20Look, you adobu.
22:21We're still on a mission to find honey.
22:23And it's not long before Julius spots something.
22:27Sweet bees.
22:28Sweet bees.
22:29Yeah, sweet bees.
22:31They are small ones.
22:32They're little.
22:33They're very tiny and not to bite.
22:35Oh, so we can just get...
22:36But they are honey.
22:36Oh, wow, OK.
22:37I've never heard of bees that don't sting.
22:43This insect?
22:44Oh, yeah, they're the bees.
22:45Oh, wow.
22:46Sweet bees.
22:47They're tiny, aren't they?
22:48Yeah, the bees.
22:49Oh, you're eating the baby bees.
22:52Julius and Zalalia just going in for the baby bees.
22:56I'll wait for the honey.
22:58The tree is cut in a way that means both the tree and the bee colony can survive.
23:03And you can just keep going back to it for more honey.
23:07Sweet honey.
23:08Dorky doggos.
23:09Dorky doggos.
23:10No, that's the big one, Lucy.
23:12Mm-mm.
23:15Mm-mm.
23:16Mm-mm.
23:21I can already tell the difference in Julius's mood.
23:26He feels so much more at home, as he would do in this environment.
23:32And, you know, he knows how to get the resources.
23:39Although that honey is good from the stingless bees, he definitely doesn't give the same amount
23:44of honey, so we're on the lookout for proper African killer bee honey hive.
23:51Honey hive?
23:52Beehive?
23:52I have spotted a tree.
23:55It looks like there's African killer bees in there, which means we can get a good meal,
24:00get some honey, and it's probably my opportunity to try and prove myself a little bit.
24:05And these are the African killer bees?
24:07Yeah, the African killer bees.
24:09Yeah, okay.
24:10This is the one first or that one?
24:13I'm feeling pretty confident after already having tried this a few weeks ago.
24:17But something about this time feels different.
24:20The stakes feel higher.
24:26We're using plenty of smoke.
24:28It's not working.
24:30The bees go into full defence mode.
24:38We're getting stung already.
24:50This is it.
24:51If I can get a lot of honey, we'll then have enough food to get us to our resupply.
24:57Wow.
24:58Ow!
25:00Okay.
25:01Do it out.
25:02Yeah, yeah.
25:03Yes.
25:11Yes.
25:13Yes.
25:13Yes.
25:14Yes.
25:17This is African killer bees.
25:19Oh!
25:19Yes.
25:19Yes, this is African.
25:20He's got one in his mouth.
25:21Oh!
25:22Yes, this is African.
25:23Oh!
25:24Oh!
25:24Cheese.
25:25Any more?
25:27They are here.
25:28Oh, yeah.
25:29In my hair.
25:30Yes.
25:31There's a lot of hair inside.
25:34Oh!
25:35Lots of African killer bees in my hair.
25:37There's no bees.
25:38There's no bees now?
25:39There's no bees.
25:40Okay.
25:40Yeah, there's already.
25:41Just hair.
25:43Go, go, go.
25:44Did it.
25:47Got the honey.
25:50I didn't expect that.
25:52The last one we did was much easier.
25:54Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
25:55It got your tongue?
25:56Yeah.
25:57Oh, no.
25:58You sure you don't want a tablet?
26:00This man is nails.
26:03Are you sure you don't want a tablet?
26:06It was very aggressive.
26:08I think I never see something like that.
26:11At least we've had lots and lots of honey.
26:26Our route is taking us closer to where Julius and Delali were born.
26:29And we want to bring a gift to the community.
26:32And there's one present that always goes down well in these parts.
26:36There's a red desert rose tree in this area used to make poison arrows.
26:40So we take a small detour to try and find it.
26:42How do you spot those?
26:44To the untrained eye.
26:46But for these guys, this is a tree to gather your necessities for poison arrow making.
26:54Poison arrows are used on the bigger, more dangerous animals like buffalo.
26:58And it means when the hads are hunting them, they don't have to get too close.
27:01A single buffalo can feed multiple families for weeks.
27:05It's incredibly valuable.
27:07And how much is that amount? How much poison?
27:12Maybe 10 to 15 hours.
27:15OK.
27:27The resupply and two days of rest is on everyone's mind right now.
27:38We've hit the edge of where Julius and Delali's community roam and are greeted by one of the elders.
27:43Most of the tribe are still away hunting and gathering.
27:45But he's keen to start the poison arrow making whilst we still have light.
27:54An elder has to be the one who cuts it.
27:57That's the sort of tradition.
28:00So this man is doing a fine job of cutting, boiling it, and then leaving it in there for 15
28:07to 30 minutes.
28:09Let's see what happens.
28:10I'm not getting too close to the smoke because it will poison me quite literally.
28:21OK, three times you boil it, and I guess that just means that the poison gets more concentrated and concentrated.
28:25The solution gets blacker and blacker.
28:29The fumes are getting strong.
28:34It takes hours to prepare, slowly heating down into a thick black tarp.
28:44I don't think I'd be touching that with my bare hands.
28:48Deadly poison.
28:50You have to be really careful handling this.
28:53If you've got even a tiny cut on your hand, this poison will get into your bloodstream.
28:59Now that it's made, this community can use it in their hunts and help feed their families.
29:04Now ready.
29:05And that is how you make poison arrows.
29:08It's quite the process.
29:10I really do wonder who figured that out first, though.
29:13Guess we'll never know.
29:17We've hit our resupply location, and now it's time to stock up and prepare our food ahead of the next
29:21part of our expedition.
29:23We organise this resupply stop in advance, as this marks midway of our journey.
29:30Go this way.
29:34We're here to see the place where Julius and Delali were born.
29:37And they tell me that there's a familiar tree I have to see.
29:40And they're about to show me something I never could have imagined.
29:46This is the tree?
29:48Yes.
29:49Wow.
29:53The Baobao tree is naturally hollow, and for generations this is where Hadza women have come to give birth.
30:01Come inside.
30:02Yeah, thank you.
30:03For safety, the women stay inside here for weeks before and after birth, cared for by the rest of the
30:09community.
30:10The tree offers shade and protection from wildlife, and somehow it's surprisingly comfortable.
30:20And you were born in here?
30:22Yes, yes.
30:22That's amazing.
30:23Me and Delali is born here.
30:26Many people.
30:28Yeah.
30:29That's incredible that you and Julius were born in here.
30:33Yes.
30:33Many, many other people.
30:34Yeah.
30:35Can you imagine being born in the tree?
30:43It's really nice.
30:45It's really nice.
30:46It's very nice.
30:47I can see the appeal of giving birth in this tree.
30:51When I was told that you were born in a tree, I wasn't thinking of a tree as magnificent as
30:58this.
30:59I mean, it's amazing.
31:00It's amazing, yeah.
31:01It's amazing, yeah.
31:01People should live in this, like, full-time.
31:04Yeah, full-time.
31:04Like, all the time.
31:05Yes.
31:06It's very nice.
31:10It's really so cool.
31:22You see, he's just reborn.
31:24Yeah, he did us come.
31:26Ooh.
31:27Blue bear.
31:27New bear.
31:29This thorn bush is secured in the doorway to keep the likes of leopards out.
31:33And the door.
31:34Blue bear.
31:35Blue bear.
31:36New door.
31:37The baobao tree's nickname, the tree of life, suddenly takes on a whole other meaning.
31:50These women are so strong, and so brave, and so stoic.
31:55I'm quite inspired by them.
31:58If they can live like this, and raise a family, and still survive out here, then definitely
32:09makes our lives back home feel very soft.
32:12We do not have it bad.
32:14We like to complain, as Brits.
32:16We like to moan.
32:17But come on.
32:19It's perspective.
32:22Yeah.
32:23That's what these trips give you.
32:25It's perspective.
32:35The sun is setting, and we have to continue our journey tomorrow.
32:39But first, I want to get one final gift for the Hadza community.
32:43Delali suggested I purchase a goat from a different neighbouring pastoralist tribe, so that we
32:48can all have a party.
32:50But of course, this goat isn't to be a pet.
32:53It's for dinner.
32:56So I've been left with the goat.
32:58The goat's not having a very good time.
32:59I'm not having a very good time listening to it.
33:02Now he's quiet.
33:03Fed him food, so that he can have a last meal.
33:10Moses is given the honour of slaughtering the goat.
33:13And for someone from the Aki tribe, this is a big moment.
33:17The guys wouldn't offer this role unless they saw him as one of their own.
33:23So the goat has been slaughtered.
33:26And I guess now it's time to cut the meat and get the party going.
33:32He's like Hadza.
33:35Moses is proving himself now by being the one to cut the meat.
33:40So it's a day of proving ourselves.
33:46Julius is saying that only the older men are allowed to eat the goat's bollocks.
33:51And I can't say I'm too upset about hearing this news.
33:56Before everyone can eat, the delicacy must first be enjoyed by the oldest men in the community.
34:01Julius being one of them.
34:04Good.
34:06Yeah.
34:07Nice one.
34:08Nice one.
34:09Me?
34:10I thought it was only men.
34:11Older men.
34:14They're difficult to women.
34:16Only men.
34:18So, but I'm allowed to taste?
34:20Oh, God.
34:22I thought I'd just got away with that.
34:23They are first.
34:25They are lucky to eat it.
34:27This is the boll.
34:28Not all women.
34:29No.
34:30I'm lucky to eat this.
34:31OK.
34:32The first women to eat it.
34:34I'm the first women to eat a goat boll.
34:38OK.
34:39Wow.
34:42That's what I'm eating.
34:43Oh, my God.
34:45Let's just say it's not very chewable, so I attempt one big swallow.
34:53It's gone.
34:54I ate it.
34:56New bear.
34:57I can't believe I just did that.
35:00That was an experience.
35:01It's been trying to avoid meat so much.
35:05And then I just ended up eating a testicle because women don't usually go off with a testicle.
35:12Oh, my God.
35:13I can taste it still.
35:14That taste is not going away any time soon, is it?
35:18Oh, gross.
35:20And with dinner over, it's now time to get dressed for the party.
35:24Oh, yeah.
35:25Nice and tight.
35:28What do you think, Moses?
35:29Wow.
35:30Wow.
35:37Wow, thank you.
35:39New bear.
35:40That was amazing.
35:42What do you think?
35:43Oh, you are beautiful.
35:45Nice one.
35:46Wow.
35:47Oh.
36:12Oh, boy.
36:26Oh.
36:27Oh, boy.
36:27Oh, boy.
36:29Oh, boy.
36:29Oh, boy.
36:30The party has put everyone in a positive mood, which is exactly what we need because what lies ahead is
36:36going to be tough.
36:38We're about to climb high up into the escarpment before heading into the land of the lions.
36:53Good morning. Well, last night was amazing. Yesterday was amazing. And there was another sandstorm or dust devils that got
37:04into my tent.
37:04As you can see, I'm incredibly dirty. I'm going to try and wash my face. And then we've got a
37:10big day today.
37:12So yeah, phase two. Phase two begins once we get over the escarpment, this high ridge that guards the land
37:19ahead and the gateway before the Serengeti.
37:22We need to pick the right route. We could be up there for days, so it's time to say our
37:27goodbyes and continue with the expedition.
37:29I met the women. Very friendly and welcoming. Time to go.
37:39Here we go, here we go, here we go again.
37:45Go Moses, go. We're going to get a photo.
37:54We're just starting our ascent of the escarpment. It's a hot, hot day.
38:02Water is going to be a problem for the next few days and the temperature is over 30 degrees Celsius,
38:07so we're each carrying eight litres.
38:09And despite all having water bladders to hold it, Dilali picks this red bucket.
38:14It's a bucket filled with water. It's not just an empty bucket.
38:19Heat injury can strike quickly here. There's no time to grit teeth and push through. I insist we stop.
38:26It's just coming up. I'm just trying to get Moses to stop and change because he's currently wearing black trousers.
38:34It's far too hot for that, so I'm a little worried about him. So trying to make him stop and
38:40change.
38:41You okay, Moses? Yeah, I'm worried about you.
38:47You hot? No, no. You good?
38:52Moses has got his shorts on.
38:55I get the feeling that this challenge so soon after our celebrations and resupply has been a bit of a
39:01reality check for the team.
39:02I'm hoping that once we get to the top, we'll find our groove again. Sweaty.
39:08I can't sweat too much because we don't have too much water.
39:12We've been carrying all of our water, but our supplies are dwindling.
39:19So let's hope we can get over this ridge and down to some sort of water before we run out.
39:30I'm just looking for a spot that we can camp.
39:34I think this will be good.
39:37A little bit of shade, a bit of security.
39:40We've carried all of our water, so that's okay.
39:45And I think we'll be pretty safe here.
39:49Animal watching.
39:52Yeah. Must be safe.
39:54Mm-hmm.
40:00A little scorpion.
40:03Baboons around here.
40:05Getting closer to the lions.
40:08That's why I'm asking.
40:09Yeah.
40:10You make fire because of elephants?
40:12Yeah.
40:13Yeah.
40:14Here is a good place.
40:16There's a mountain.
40:16There's rocks here.
40:18So it's good.
40:18Yeah.
40:19For running away.
40:21Yeah, running away.
40:22Yeah.
40:23But if you run away, please wake me up as well.
40:26No, don't roll.
40:27Don't leave me sleeping.
40:28The fire might keep the elephants away tonight.
40:31But it doesn't seem to be stopping other unexpected visitors.
40:36There's someone watching us.
40:47We've got visitors.
40:50They're from the Toga tribe.
40:52The Toga tribe.
40:53Yeah.
40:54There's a lot of Toga.
41:02The Toga tribe are a semi-nomadic tribe who live around this area, known for the stealth
41:07and fierce warrior history.
41:10Our presence here draws attention.
41:12Dilali chooses to sleep by the fire to keep watch.
41:19We had no problems with people last night.
41:21Just a scorpion just here.
41:24But also we've got some people visiting right now.
41:27Just saying hello.
41:29There's always something.
41:31Word has clearly spread within the Toga tribe that we're here.
41:35The silence is deafening.
41:37I hope it's just curiosity.
41:47I'm really, really excited to see what's on the other side once we make it over this.
41:55And get to the ridge.
41:57Because then the Serengeti awaits.
42:01Oh, over there.
42:04Thank you, giraffe.
42:07You're amazing.
42:08It's my first giraffe in the wild.
42:11Yes.
42:13There's a giraffe right there with its long neck looking right at us.
42:18Yes.
42:18We must be getting closer to the Serengeti.
42:20Yeah.
42:22Definitely getting closer to the wildlife heart.
42:27One of the wildlife hearts of the whole world.
42:30The Serengeti.
42:35Big walking day.
42:37Tomorrow we'll get to the Serengeti.
42:39And right now it's time for the best moment of the day.
42:43Which is to take off my shoes.
42:53I am feeling quite weak.
42:55I think it's the food.
42:58I'm not eating enough.
43:00Dilali's role in the team is hunter-gatherer.
43:02But when there's nothing around, it's time to bring out the ugali.
43:06Ugali is East Africa's staple food, made from maize flour.
43:10Easy to make and basically rocket fuel.
43:13We've been saving our big pack for moments like this when rations are low and we need the energy.
43:18Especially with our biggest challenge yet ahead of us.
43:21The Serengeti.
43:23Roly, roly, roly.
43:24I love you.
43:26I love you.
43:27More now.
43:28And.
43:29Mwah.
43:30Chef de lali.
43:33Chef de lali does cook sugali.
43:36That's the cooking show.
43:37I'm not very good at eating with valli.
43:40Because it's really hot.
43:42And it's like basically putting yourself, your hands in mashed potato.
43:45And I just can't eat it quick enough because it's so hot.
43:49A bit of bread roll.
43:51Is there toast?
43:53Including toast.
43:55That's really good actually.
43:57It's better than goat's testicle.
44:00I'll tell you that.
44:02Mmm.
44:04The meal marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next challenge.
44:09We're doing things a little bit differently.
44:11We're going to be walking through the Serengeti.
44:14And so we've got special permits to do that.
44:16We have to have our wits about us.
44:19We're going to learn fast and be very aware.
44:24Because let's just see how much wildlife there is.
44:27We all think that we know the Serengeti.
44:29But I think this is a way of really showing a part that you never get to see before.
44:33And I can't wait to find out what that part is.
44:35I should listen to that.
44:38We're holding the camera like that.
44:39Cause you're doing that.
44:41I think you put the camera in there.
44:46You're doing that.
44:47You're failing.
44:47And I don't like that.
44:48I don't know that I don't know.
44:49But I don't know what the camera is doing.
44:50No, I don't know what the camera looks like.
44:51But I don't know.
44:57But I'm not sure what the camera looks like.
45:04The camera is coming up.
45:19We'll see you all back.
45:21Hi.
45:23Here you go.
45:24Santia, Santia.
45:26Oh.
45:28Oh.
45:29Oh.
45:32Watch out.
45:33To our head, to our head.
45:35Oh.
45:35Look at this incredible view that we've got now that we're at the top.
45:46It fills up the soul, being in scenery like this.
45:51Incredible.
45:53Yes.
45:55Yes.
45:59The last four weeks have pushed us, but it's nothing compared to what lies ahead in the Serengeti.
46:09We take on the Serengeti.
46:11As soon as we arrived here, there's just so much wildlife.
46:14Amazing.
46:15And are exposed to everything the wild throws at us.
46:17Our water collecting has been made far more dangerous than expected.
46:22Cross paths with lions.
46:23Whoa.
46:25He's right by camp.
46:26And run dangerously low on water.
46:28I don't know if we've got enough for 24 hours.
46:31Stepping closer to our final hurdle, Mount Langai, the volcano.
46:35This is it.
46:36The final push.
46:45This is it.
46:52The final push.
46:53As soon as we run away.
46:56We will talk about that with our horror.
46:58That is the final push won't to do all day.
47:00How to run away.
47:01Yes.
47:03And handle that with the light procurement.
47:04The final method.
47:04The final response on video of the bay.
47:05It's not a sufficient tool to run away.
47:05The final step.
47:05And felt that within the polyps that are in the holy pulps.
47:05Com 커ze.
