00:01After more than 25 years of negotiations, the contentious EU-Mercosur trade deal went into provisional effect on May 1st.
00:10The agreement, however, still faces a legal challenge before the Court of Justice of the European Union,
00:16after EU Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen effectively sidestepped a parliamentary vote on its confirmation.
00:23The deal creates a free trade zone between the European Union and the Mercosur countries of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and
00:31Uruguay.
00:32After several postponements, it was finally signed in January. However, not everyone was pleased about that.
00:38The agreement received significant opposition from several EU member states, governments such as France and Poland,
00:45with many EU farmers also expressing their discontent.
00:51Supporters of the deal believe it would create new market opportunities,
00:55while critics argue it creates unfair competition for European farmers and worry it can weaken EU standards and regulations.
01:03While the European Commission secured enough support from member states, a majority in the European Parliament oppose it.
01:11MEPs have now referred the deal to the European Court of Justice to review its legality.
01:16The deal will be halted if the European body rules against it.
01:19Let's complain.
01:21trust me.
