EU says Mercosur deal set for provisional application from 1 May

The EU executive finalised procedures to provisionally implement the contentious Mercosur trade deal, with tariff cuts on goods to take effect from 1 May despite a legal challenge at the EU Court of Justice.

00:01The European Commission took final steps to provisionally apply the Mercosur trade deal from the 1st of May, covering Argentina,
00:10Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
00:12The move uses a special procedure to ensure the deal takes effect despite a judicial review launched by the European
00:19Parliament after a pivotal vote suspended ratification on the 21st of January.
00:24The priority now is turning this EU-Mercosur agreement into concrete outcomes, giving EU exporters the platform they need to
00:33seize new opportunities for trade, growth and jobs.
00:36EU Trade Commissioner Marko Sefkovic said adding provisional application will allow the EU to begin delivering on that promise.
00:44The agreement liberalizes trade flows between the EU and Mercosur countries, creating a free trade area of more than 700
00:52million people.
00:54He signed off on the deal and secured backing from EU member states, despite strong opposition from EU farmers who
