Persistent Navotas landfill fire leaves locals gasping

Three weeks after a fire started at Metro Manila's Navotas landfill, residents in nearby areas still have a hard time breathing because of thick smoke. The fire at the landfill, which stopped receiving waste last August, is largely invisible to the naked eye, combusting as deep as 15 meters below the surface, a chemical reaction releasing a toxic brew of methane and carbon dioxide.
