00:02Hundreds of protesters clashed with Australian emergency services in a remote town following
00:07the alleged murder of a five-year-old Indigenous girl.
00:10The child, now referred to by her family as Kumanjai Little Baby, in line with Indigenous
00:16customs, was reported missing from her home on the outskirts of Alice Springs late on
00:20Saturday.
00:21Her body was discovered on Thursday by searchers combing harsh desert terrain around the town,
00:27a popular tourist destination in Australia's Northern Territory.
00:31Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole said in an interview with the ABC on Friday
00:37that a 47-year-old man, identified as Jefferson Lewis and alleged to have killed the girl,
00:44was taken into custody on Thursday night after being located by locals and found badly beaten.
00:50Dole said around 400 people later gathered outside Alice Springs Hospital, where Lewis
00:55was being treated, attempting to force entry.
00:58Dole condemned the attacks on police and emergency workers, saying they were not acceptable and
01:04did not reflect the cooperation seen during the five-day search effort.
01:08Two police officers and two medical workers were injured in the unrest.
01:12Dole said Lewis was transferred to Darwin in the early hours of Friday for his own safety,
01:17and is expected to be charged in the coming days.
