00:03.
00:21911 was the address of the emergency.
00:24It's in the 2,000 block of Painter,
00:25a lot across the street.
00:28There's a guy that has just been shot
00:30and he's laying down.
00:31Looks like he's dead.
00:33And when did this happen?
00:34Like a minute and a half ago.
00:36Is anyone in danger right now?
00:40I tell them to get the hell out here.
00:42Everybody's in danger.
00:43I don't trust that the shooter is not around the block.
00:47This is such a shame.
00:48They need to get out of here.
00:50Officers, they're on their way.
00:56541.
00:57Oh, it's a nice 7.
00:58EMS in the crew.
01:01Male shot several times.
01:03I'm responsible.
01:06Somebody's shot in the armor right there, too.
01:07One of the steps over there.
01:09Another EMS bragging over here.
01:11We got an additional victim shot to the armor.
01:13Come on, you got to go in there.
01:15Come on!
01:16Come on!
01:16Come on!
01:17Where they taking this?
01:18You know, that's my son.
01:19Dope, they're in the all game.
01:21You didn't see him.
01:22.
01:25What's his name?
01:26Marlon Davis.
01:28I'm gonna let y'all know.
01:29Man, that skinny boy Jesus.
01:30Come on, you little woman.
01:43I got a deceased individual on scene.
01:46And I've got a surviving victim who's been shot,
01:49who was en route to the hospital.
01:54I'm actually at the hospital right now working another case.
01:58This just works out that I'm here.
02:00I can get the surviving witnesses information firsthand.
02:04He's the best lead that we have since he was there and saw everything that happened.
02:18My surviving witness told me that he knows who the perpetrator is.
02:24His name's Deezy.
02:25He described him as a six-foot-three male, black curly hair, slim build, wearing like a blue puffer coat
02:35and a black t-shirt.
02:36The surviving witness and Marlon and this other guy and Deezy were gonna go out for the surviving witness's birthday
02:45when all of a sudden Marlon and Deezy get into an argument.
02:49A gun gets pulled, everyone gets out of a vehicle and Deezy starts shooting.
02:53My surviving victim runs and starts getting shot at.
02:57Now we need to actually go out to the crime scene and meet up with Maurice and Steph and see
03:05what they got.
03:17As I walk into the crime scene, there's an empty lot and there's a body just laying in the lot,
03:26backpack on, lifeless.
03:31Crime lab's already out there, so you know, you've got cone markers, placing where all the evidence is.
03:39I can hear people crying on the other side of the tape.
03:43So I'm guessing family's here, which has another element.
03:50My decedent, Marlon Davis, was about 24 years old and he was the youngest of two siblings and is a
03:57native New Orleans.
04:01He is shot multiple times.
04:07Shot in the body a few times and then he had a couple of shots to the head.
04:12Did someone stand over him? Is there an execution?
04:16If you shoot somebody in the head, I mean, usually that's personal.
04:20Um, you have mom's name and all that, do you?
04:23I don't have any of that yet.
04:25Um, mom of the deceased is Danielle Brown.
04:29I tried to get her to come to headquarters, but she wouldn't.
04:32So she is the one who kind of gave me the information about this Deezy guy.
04:35OK.
04:35That, uh, he was possibly the perpetrator.
04:39Silver Ford SUV?
04:40This is the car that he's riding around in.
04:42Is that what someone gave you?
04:43Yeah, the mom.
04:45All right.
04:50I just got a statement from .
04:52She just sent me a photo and said this is the person who did it.
04:55She just know him as Deezy.
04:58Everyone's hearing the name Deezy.
05:01Witnesses have been known to give you wrong names and stuff like that.
05:04But now that we're getting more than one person telling us the same thing,
05:09we put Deezy into our database.
05:12We log all of our police reports and any type of police contact.
05:15So we were able to look up nicknames, names.
05:19And someone actually wrote a report back in 2019 that listed Deezy as a nickname.
05:26I got it.
05:27And our database comes out with a name.
05:31We got a DeJuan Brooks.
05:33That was the names we got for Deezy.
05:38Now we take DeJuan Brooks and start pulling up a driver's license.
05:46175-63.
05:48Curly black.
05:49Yeah.
05:49That's my guy.
05:50The state-issued driver's license matches what my surviving witness gave me.
05:55Curly hair, 6'3", slim build.
05:58Now we're rolling.
06:02Incarcerated for egg battery, five years.
06:05He's got a pretty hefty sheet.
06:14I'm going to leave here.
06:14I got to go to headquarters and get this line up to Rob.
06:17You want me to go do it?
06:19If you want to do it, if you don't mind.
06:20All right.
06:21I'll email it to you then.
06:23And if you can just print it out and give it to Rob.
06:25All right.
06:27I'm headed to the hospital.
06:29Rob Long is going to show a line up to the surviving victim.
06:32Can you let me know the outcome of that?
06:33And if he positively identifies that guy with my warrant?
06:36Okay, yeah.
06:40Maurice is going back to headquarters to get the line up, which is a single piece of paper that has
06:47six photos on it.
06:48One of them being my suspect.
06:51And then five other people who have the same facial features, skin tones, hair.
06:57Maurice is going to take that to Detective Rob Long at the hospital.
07:01Rob has no knowledge about it.
07:04So it's bias free.
07:07He just hands the six photos to the surviving witness and they look at him.
07:24I'm part of the de-escalation.
07:26Hey, sir.
07:26Nice to meet you.
07:27I'm Detective Hill.
07:29So it's the young lady.
07:30Who is she?
07:31She used to date him.
07:32She used to date the pawn.
07:33Her name is .
07:35And he just called her from .
07:38She said he's heading out of town.
07:40She said she didn't know.
07:42Okay.
07:42But she said that he told her he wasn't coming back.
07:46Thank you, man.
07:47God bless y'all.
07:48Thank you, sir.
07:48Appreciate you for your help.
07:49God bless you, dear.
07:52Well, we're off to a good start.
07:54A real good start, you know?
07:58This case is workable.
08:00You've got a name.
08:01You've got descriptions from multiple angles.
08:04Everyone's excited about that.
08:06Everyone wants to figure out who it is.
08:08And then let's get this person off the street as soon as we can.
08:12It's Detective Hill.
08:13How you doing?
08:14Good, ma'am. How are you?
08:15I'm a big congratulations.
08:16Okay.
08:17Ms. Danielle, I'm a decedent now.
08:19Say the perpetrator is calling the from a decedent.
08:25What number?
08:26I think I got...
08:27The phone number I gave you?
08:28Yeah.
08:28That's for the deceased.
08:29Whoever did the shooting took the deceased's phone.
08:33So...
08:34This is Marlin's cell phone.
08:35That's Marlin's cell phone.
08:37Yes.
08:37But that's the phone number.
08:39He was communicating with his phone.
08:42So...
08:43Can I bring Ms. Danielle to you?
08:45Yeah, bring her to me.
08:46Absolutely.
08:49Hey, Ms. Danielle.
08:50The dude who killed my son is over there.
08:53He keep calling from Marlin's phone.
08:57At this time, other family members are walking up saying
09:00that they're getting phone calls from my victim's phone
09:03that's still missing.
09:05And they're continually trying to track it on their phone,
09:08but it's not really pinging anymore.
09:11So they pull it up and the last ping was in the 2000 block.
09:16We've been all up and down the 2000 block
09:18and haven't found anything yet.
09:29Someone told me he was trying to leave town.
09:31Is that what they're saying?
09:31Yeah.
09:32You know, got money.
09:33He's homeless and everything.
09:34He's sleeping in the back of that truck here.
09:36What color is that car?
09:37What's that car look like?
09:38It was a silver.
09:38Ford Escape.
09:40How long has your son known Deezy?
09:41Like, what's the relationship there?
09:43Do we know that?
09:44You know who know everything?
09:45Yeah.
09:46Who got shot.
09:47Really?
09:47Yeah, they said him and Deezy was fighting first.
09:50Okay.
09:51Absolutely.
09:51They must have jumped in it.
09:53They say, Marlon beat Deezy up.
09:55Then that's when he stole his shit.
09:57Yeah.
09:57He said, you want to do me like that?
09:59And he went over there and stood over.
10:01And Deezy, Jaquan Brooks, whatever his name is,
10:04wanted to shoot .
10:05And did like this.
10:07He got shot in the hole.
10:09Neighbors telling us he was running around the block shooting.
10:12He got to get off the street.
10:34We got a possible perpetrator, DeJuan Brooks, who goes by Deezy and supposedly good friends
10:43with the decedent and my surviving victim.
10:50The perpetrator is supposed to be driving around in a silver or gray, like, Ford SUV.
10:55Like, possibly a Ford Escape.
10:57There's conflicting stories.
11:00Marlon's mother thinks that my surviving victim, Ben Deezy, maybe had a physical altercation
11:07and Marlon might have stepped in and that's what might have got Marlon killed.
11:13Lots of leads and loose ends to tie up right now.
11:28If picks out Deezy, that's going to be an arrest warrant right there.
11:35Here is Maurice.
11:36Hey, buddy.
11:38That is going to be a no.
11:41Really?
11:42The surviving victim didn't pick him out in the lineup?
11:46Nope.
11:47He did not pick him out.
11:48He put them all back in a folder and said he don't recognize anybody.
11:52He said that Ford's hair looked like his hair, but then he didn't pick out anybody.
11:58And then he said, can I see the lineup again?
12:01But we didn't present the lineup for him again.
12:03Because at that point, we just felt like he had already refused to pick him out.
12:08Well, talking to the family out here, they say that he's the one who knows Deezy and brings Deezy around.
12:17Wow.
12:18Wow.
12:19Yeah.
12:20Wow.
12:21Yeah.
12:22All right.
12:23All right.
12:24At this point, all roads are leading to Deezy.
12:27But it sounds like my surviving victim might be covering for him.
12:32He might be scared.
12:34And him not picking Deezy out of this lineup, that's going to change the game a little bit.
12:43My surviving victim, he wants to help out, you know?
12:46He's scared.
12:47It's trauma.
12:48Somebody tried to kill him.
12:50He had to run for his life.
12:52And now he's in a hospital setting.
12:53There's a bunch of variables.
12:57The surviving witness gave us Deezy.
13:00One of those, like, generic nicknames.
13:02Yeah.
13:03You feel safe to just throw that out there, but...
13:04He described him.
13:05He gave us a height.
13:06Yeah, it was a really good description, too.
13:09Could be more than one Deezy out there.
13:11Well, we got another photo sent from .
13:13That matches?
13:15Yeah, it matches the lineup photo.
13:17And both have a tattoo under the eye.
13:20But my surviving witness didn't identify anybody.
13:23She just sent me a photo and said, this is the person who did it.
13:26She just know him as Deezy.
13:30Priority number one now.
13:32Got to track down the source of the photo.
13:34So I called the surviving witness's mom to find that photo.
13:42Hello?
13:43Hey, Mr. .
13:44Detective Phil, how you doing?
13:46All right.
13:48Um, I got some information that sent you that photo of the shooter?
13:54No.
13:54We was on the scene with the photo in our phones.
13:57So how'd you get that?
14:00Well, he posted on his page before he got killed.
14:02It's still up now.
14:03And it's still up there now.
14:05On Instagram.
14:06Which Instagram account?
14:10All right.
14:12So that's about all I'm going to need for the moment.
14:14Appreciate your time.
14:16Yes, sir.
14:17Bye.
14:18So Joe, my colleague, gets right onto Instagram and finds on my decedent's Instagram page.
14:27This is your victim?
14:29That's my victim.
14:30Yeah.
14:32That's a long video.
14:33I bet they pan over to him.
14:35We're about to get some evidence.
14:38Come on.
14:40There he is.
14:40That's my guy.
14:42Looks like Deezy to me.
14:43Matches the surviving witness's description, hair, clothing that he described.
14:49I mean, are my decedent's in the car before they go and pick up my surviving witness?
14:55You got him in the same car on the same day, right?
14:58That's pretty good.
15:01And this is how soon before your shooting?
15:0411.55.
15:05So an hour and, what, 10 minutes?
15:08You showed him a picture of him in your lineup and he said nothing?
15:12He said, I don't recognize anybody in it.
15:14He said, but his hair was like that.
15:15Yeah.
15:15Aw.
15:19You tell me.
15:19Look at this.
15:21Yeah, dude.
15:23I've got a driver's license photo and an Instagram video that looks similar.
15:29But it's circumstantial evidence, not physical evidence.
15:34If I can get something that puts the perpetrator on scene during the murder, now we're cooking.
15:39I've got shell casings so that evidence can leave somewhere.
15:43If we can find a murder weapon, there's still breadcrumbs to building this case.
15:48To try to get a murderer off the street.
15:51Me putting an arrest warrant out for this guy based off of flimsy.
15:55I have an Instagram post an hour earlier.
15:58I think you're above flimsy.
15:59I don't know if we're at a arrest warrant yet though.
16:02It's a little stressful if you're in my scene.
16:04I think you must be a poster.
16:05Yeah, no.
16:06I'm having fun watching you.
16:07Yeah.
16:08Thanks.
16:08Suffering.
16:10We can use suffer.
16:11That's a good one.
16:12At least it's not me suffering this time.
16:14Oh, those are my favorite.
16:16All right.
16:17Well, a little more to do.
16:21Every hour that DZ's out on the streets, the more complicated this gets.
16:25He could start destroying evidence.
16:27He could run.
16:28He could go to another state.
16:29Endless possibilities the longer this takes.
16:33Everyone's telling me who did it, but I need the surviving witness.
16:36That's the only way this murder is going to get solved.
17:00My surviving victim requested to see the lineup again.
17:04of who shot him and who murdered Marlon.
17:08So, now we're going to see if we can schedule a time that he can come and look at it.
17:16Hello?
17:17Hey, Mr. .
17:18Detective Ville, how you doing?
17:19Hi. How you doing?
17:20Good.
17:21Mr. around?
17:25All right.
17:27I actually want to see if I can get him to come to headquarters.
17:31He mentioned in the hospital that he wanted to look at that lineup again that we showed him.
17:42I appreciate you, Ms. .
17:44No problem.
17:45All right.
17:49That's promising.
17:50That's good.
17:51That's a good start right there.
17:54At this point, I'm very optimistic.
17:56Like, okay, he wants to look at this lineup again.
17:59Mom isn't beating around the bush.
18:01She sounds like she's a deciding factor.
18:03Like, I'm bringing him.
18:04You know?
18:05It's just great.
18:19I'm going to call this lady.
18:20It's 157.
18:27Please leave your message for .
18:35I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt.
18:36Maybe she's still doing something with her daughter.
18:39She was doing something with her daughter at 1.
18:41Mm-hmm.
18:42She was going to come here after.
18:44You're right.
18:44It's 2.
18:45I agree.
18:45New Orleans is small.
18:47You can get from point A to B in, like, 5, 10 minutes.
18:50I can get from here to the West Bank in, like, 15 minutes.
18:54That's not 5 to 10 minutes.
18:55Get the chubbies, get me some chicken, then come back.
18:57They're closed today, and you know that.
18:59Me and Arthur have been partners for about eight, nine years now.
19:03We came on a job together.
19:05We were in the same police academy.
19:07We definitely complement each other.
19:09I guess Sal will get me some coffee.
19:11Yeah?
19:11You going to get me some coffee?
19:13Nah, bro.
19:14Yeah, I didn't think so.
19:15You always forget about me.
19:18Maurice and I bicker back and forth on everything.
19:21We each have our own strengths, you know?
19:24He's the ying to my yang.
19:27I knew it was too good to be true.
19:29Call her back, bro.
19:30Maybe she's stuck in traffic.
19:32Maybe she's on Danzinger Bridge.
19:36This case is very up and down.
19:40The surviving witness seems like he's trying to avoid me.
19:43At this moment, I'm at a standstill with being able to identify DZ as the alleged suspect.
19:52There's no other witnesses that are coming forward.
19:55No phones found on scene.
19:57The only thing I have for evidence are shell casings.
20:00But I don't have a murder weapon.
20:03So I got to start pursuing other avenues.
20:28where's it?
20:31There you have no choice.
20:36It's all right, man.
20:37It's all right.
20:38He cut my own.
20:39All right, it's all right.
20:39He ran.
20:40What's your name now?
20:42Emma Page.
20:43Emma Page.
20:44You have the Lord watching over you, OK, Ms. Selma?
20:46Yeah.
20:47Ready, guys?
20:48Good.
20:49Good.
20:50I didn't catch him, man.
20:51He's fine.
20:52He's fine.
20:53He had VMS coming through that way.
20:55You're doing real good, Ms. Selma.
20:58Stay with me.
21:02We are headed to a crime scene.
21:04Sounds like a guy stabbed a lady, which led a security guard to shoot and kill the male perpetrator.
21:12See if I can get through here.
21:13I'm turning on my lights.
21:15All I know is that the woman is at the hospital right now.
21:18I think she's critical.
21:20And supposedly there's a deceased male somewhere out here.
21:24Let's go check it out.
21:36The moment when I arrived, the scene was pretty calm.
21:39But normally at that time, that's a busy intersection.
21:43It is kind of shocking whenever we get a stabbing or a shooting in that area, because on that corner
21:48there's surveillance everywhere.
21:51I see there's the decedent laying on the ground at the corner by some bloody clothing.
21:58The decedent looked fairly young, about 45 or so.
22:03And I see that there's a wheelchair.
22:06It's kind of a weird scene.
22:08And I'm just trying to figure out, like, what actually happened.
22:14Okay, I got a ton of information for you.
22:16Perfect.
22:18Your female stabbing victim is Emma Page, black female.
22:23She's got her husband who is on scene.
22:26Vict on the ground is unknown at the moment.
22:29It was a 103-M, it looks like.
22:31Mm-hmm.
22:31There's a nice old lady wheeling down the street in a wheelchair.
22:34Your 103-M attacks her with a knife.
22:36Viciously stabs her for about two minutes before people intervene.
22:39For two minutes?
22:41The security guard for Walgreens comes out, tries to, like, move the knife away, gets cut on the arm.
22:46Mm-hmm.
22:46He then retreats to his car, gets his firearm.
22:49While this guy continues to stab this lady out of the wheelchair, comes back over and clips him.
22:54He's dead on the ground.
22:57The husband told one of the officers we never had a problem with him before.
23:01Like, I think he's a regular out on this corner.
23:03Mm-hmm.
23:04The security guard or shooter is at the hospital.
23:07This is getting stitched up.
23:09Everything's on video.
23:10Okay.
23:11And the stabbing victim is at the hospital.
23:14I have no idea yet, but based on that video, I'll be shocked if she's still alive.
23:19Wow.
23:20Okay.
23:22You're gonna watch the video.
23:23All right.
23:26We do have, like, a large homeless community that hang around that area.
23:30So it's possible that the decedent was a homeless person who was maybe having some mental issues.
23:36Before I became a police officer, I was just unaware of how many people suffer from mental illness.
23:41But now I can pretty much see what's going on with people.
23:46Luckily, we had video of the incident.
23:49So I got it zoomed in right now.
23:51So that's the victim right there.
24:00What the ?
24:02What the ?
24:09Wow.
24:10Wow. Are you kidding me, bruh?
24:16Watching this video, I see that the person who was stabbed,
24:20she left out of Walgreens in her wheelchair.
24:23She's then attacked by the decedent.
24:28Looks like he swung and tried to punch her.
24:31Then he grabs her and knocks her to the ground in her wheelchair
24:35and commits to stabbing her.
24:40Wow.
24:41That's a security guard there.
24:45And security guard got cut trying to take the knife away.
24:50So he runs to his car, which is in the parking lot.
24:53He gets his fire on.
24:56He's still stabbing.
24:58So this guy, he pushed the trash can on top of him.
25:03And then security guard comes back.
25:07One round was fired.
25:11And we have the gun in the back of the car.
25:14After watching this horrendous video,
25:16I learned that the security guard shot the decedent one time in the chest.
25:21I really just wanted him to stop.
25:22Yeah, absolutely.
25:24Like, look, stop, what you doing?
25:25Everybody was yelling and trying to get him to stop.
25:27People were stopping on this road.
25:29But he wasn't stopping.
25:30He just kept doing it.
25:31He did get cut on a hand pretty bad.
25:34So he was at the hospital getting stitches.
25:36And the stabbing victim was at the hospital getting further treatment.
25:41How is she alive?
25:42I don't know.
25:43She had 12 total stab wounds.
25:46Five to the right shoulder, five to the rear neck, one to the cheek, one to the forehead.
25:52So, and not to mention, she was getting punched at the same time.
25:55How low?
25:58Emma Page, this is a strong woman.
26:01She's in her 70s.
26:03And even though she's in a wheelchair, she still was able to try and fight back and even throw a
26:09few punches.
26:10Did you see how long this dude was stabbing that lady for?
26:13She's in stable condition.
26:15Bruh, that is lucky.
26:17She survives this.
26:18I hope she does, but that is lucky.
26:21The security guard may have saved this woman's life.
26:25Because there was no one else on the scene who could have acted as fast as he did.
26:32Then it's the knife.
26:37Look, got an ID?
26:39Yes, yes.
26:39Oh, we got an ID.
26:42Gary Rowe, Gary Rowe.
26:46He's got a bunch of, like, 103 arrests and stuff between, like, here and St. Bernard.
26:51Oh, yeah.
26:51So he's definitely homeless.
26:53Yeah.
26:53So he's pretty much just wandering around.
26:57We were able to get an ID on the suspect who was the decedent, and we find out that he's
27:02a homeless guy.
27:05Sometimes it's hard when you get a homeless person because you have to find a next of kin and everything
27:09so you can notify them of what happened.
27:11I heard about what it was when I was coming here.
27:14I did not think it would be this.
27:15Like, you just randomly stab a lady.
27:18And the lady he picks is the most vulnerable lady, which is a lady in a wheelchair.
27:22Yeah.
27:23Like, she can't defend herself at all.
27:25I don't get it.
27:28I don't know.
27:28I guess he had it on his mind today.
27:52It is an unusual case.
27:54When a victim survives and the perpetrator is deceased.
27:58But it's still important just to follow protocol and investigate the incident.
28:03After talking with Mr. Martin, I concluded that at this point, I won't charge him with the homicide.
28:08He fired one shot.
28:09That stopped the attack.
28:11It was a justifiable homicide.
28:14Mr. Martin was defending Ms. Page's life.
28:17It is still important to speak with Emma Page just to get a formal statement from her.
28:21Once she's better, I'll give her some time to heal and everything, and then I'll come back and talk to
28:26her.
29:13What color does that car look like?
29:15It was a silver Ford escape.
29:17Maybe catch Deezy's vehicle near where Marlon Davis was murdered, even if it's a half mile away.
29:28It's a little bit of grasping at straws, but with my surviving witness not in communication right now, it's all
29:35we have to go on.
29:37Those are the closest cameras in that area.
29:402,000 block of painters, yeah.
29:44Damn, that's it.
29:50All right.
29:51The decedent's mom texts me.
29:54Let's go over there so we can put this call on speaker.
29:56Perfect.
30:09Yes, ma'am.
30:11What's going on with ?
30:13I don't know.
30:15I already was on the phone with Ms. and she was going to bring to headquarters.
30:20And she didn't bring him?
30:22No.
30:23Why they don't want to cooperate?
30:25They scared of Deezy?
30:26If they'd help me out, I can get Deezy off the street.
30:29You're not getting away with killing my child at the foot bar?
30:32Yeah.
30:33No way.
30:34Talk to your ****.
30:35Tell her that.
30:36You know, look, I don't know if he's thinking he's in trouble with us or something, so he doesn't want
30:40to talk.
30:40Like, he's not in trouble.
30:42We just need to talk to him.
30:44Okay.
30:46All right.
30:50I can't imagine what mom's going through.
30:52She just lost her son.
30:54She wants to get justice as much as I do.
30:58Ms. Danielle told me that she was a small business owner and her son Marlon was always helping her out.
31:03He was really proud of her.
31:04He told everybody about his mom's new snowball truck.
31:07Sadly, her new truck opened up in March and he was killed a few weeks later.
31:14I'm hoping that Marlon's mom will talk to the surviving victim so that they will come and talk to me.
31:21Otherwise, there's no case.
31:30Oh, I'll be right back.
31:30Shangri-Fi.
31:30Who?
31:32Who?
31:59Detective Hill.
32:06I get a phone call from the surviving victim's mother, finally.
32:12Yes, Ms. , how you doing?
32:20We've been down this road before, but she's adamant that he wants to come in.
32:27So I'm like, OK, meet me at headquarters.
32:32All right.
32:33Now, I have to have somebody who has no knowledge, no bias about this case show my surviving witness
32:41the exact same lineup again.
32:45Luckily, Pat, one of our investigators, comes in and he agrees.
32:51So then we're just waiting on surviving witness to come in.
32:56Once it's all done, I got to go in and ask him some more questions.
32:59I need to re-interview him.
33:00Right.
33:01Can you just tell me when you're on the line?
33:03As soon as he's done with the lineup, you can come on out.
33:07OK.
33:08Yeah.
33:10There's still doubt in my mind that he's going to come in.
33:17Luckily, this time, my surviving witness shows up.
33:39You'll be showing a number of individual photographs.
33:42If you recognize anyone, please tell me which photograph you recognize and how you recognize
33:47the individual.
33:53When you're watching, looking at the video of it, you can't tell what he's really doing.
34:01Is he going to pick him out?
34:06Identify someone?
34:11Is that the one?
34:13I don't know.
34:13I can't tell.
34:16I don't pick it.
34:18Initial and date.
34:20Everything on this case rests within this moment.
34:23Stop being so nervous.
34:25If now he looks at this lineup a second time and doesn't pick out my suspect, Deezy, what
34:32do you do?
34:34Let's hope he picked the right guy, though.
34:38Appreciate it.
34:40I'm ready to get the detectable guy.
34:49Which number did he pick?
34:55Four?
34:55OK.
34:56Perfect.
35:00Confirmed.
35:01My eyewitness is now, like, Deezy, DeJuan Brooks.
35:05Out of the lineup.
35:06Appreciate it, Pat.
35:13Hi, buddy.
35:15Hello.
35:17What's up?
35:17How you doing, man?
35:18Doing all right?
35:20Detective Philly.
35:21Remember Detective Stewart?
35:23Well, first of all, man, we just want to start out that, like, you wanted to see the
35:26photos again, correct?
35:38I mean, with the first lineup when we showed it to you the first time when you didn't pick
35:41out anyone.
35:43Is that why?
35:46Too scared.
35:47I get it.
35:48Can you describe him again for me, though?
35:51Curly hair.
35:53Curly hair?
35:54OK.
35:54Does he have any tattoos, facial features, hair, anything?
36:02All right.
36:02We appreciate you coming out here to talk to us, so we don't go ahead and do what we need
36:05to do to get this dude off the street.
36:08All right?
36:09All right, man.
36:12This breaks the case.
36:15Maurice and I both have a huge sigh of relief.
36:19Now I can write an arrest warrant for DeJuan Brooks, which is sent to our violent offender
36:24warrant squad, who works at U.S. Marshals.
36:27Now it's up to them to find him.
36:51Hey, dude.
36:52What's up?
36:53They got Deezy up in Missouri.
36:56Missouri?
36:57Yeah.
36:58The Marshals and Vows found him up there, so they're going to extradite him back.
37:02That dude went way to Missouri.
37:03Yeah.
37:04Well, that's good.
37:05At least they found him.
37:06Yeah.
37:07It complicates things a little bit that Deezy was found outside of jurisdictions because
37:11it's a little harder to, like, say, do a search warrant on where he was found.
37:15You got to rely on other jurisdictions detectives to help you out a little bit.
37:20What did they track to find him out there?
37:22Do you know?
37:22They did an Instagram warrant off a new Instagram that he had to get the subscriber information
37:28and get the phone number for the phone that they found on him.
37:32Once we got the warrant secured and the phone analyzed, Deezy's phone records doesn't give
37:38me anything good.
37:39The only thing it does tell me was that the phone was purchased about six hours after the
37:44murder in Mississippi.
37:46And the Marshals actually tracked him to a restaurant that he just started working at.
37:50We don't have physical evidence, but we got a strong witness testimony.
37:55You know, he ended up IDing Deezy in a lineup.
37:59That makes it a great case.
38:01What was that about?
38:01Because they were friends, right?
38:03Yeah.
38:03According to .
38:04I mean, the whole thing started over, you know, just an argument about clothes and girls,
38:11you know?
38:12At this age, why are you arguing over clothes and girls?
38:15And how does that turn into a homicide?
38:19It's a great feeling, bringing a little bit of closure to a family who's grieving and
38:23hurting for Marlon's murder.
38:29There.
38:43And here's the burglar.
38:44It's not.
38:53Maybe there's a couple more.
38:55I'm not sure.
38:55There are three weeks, no more.
39:03I met with a decedent's mom and his stepdad just to explain the whole situation to them.
39:09I learned from him that he was actually living with his parents, and after two years, he just
39:15clicked out. They ended up having to evict him. He was never diagnosed with anything,
39:20but they said that the way he started acting was really strange. And then after two years,
39:25they just didn't hear from him anymore. His mom, she was actually thankful that the security guard
39:32was there to step in and save Ms. Page's life, because she don't think that she could live with
39:36her son killing an innocent person like that. They were really nice. I felt really bad for them,
39:43you know, because I think at that point, they felt like there was nothing they can do,
39:47you know, with their son, like reaching out and getting them help, but he just wasn't
39:51receptive to it. So it was like, you know, there was nothing else they can do.
39:56This case definitely shines a spotlight on untreated mental health issues, but I don't
40:02know what he was going through at the time that made him react this way. She was lucky that somebody
40:07was out there who just stepped in right away and helped her out.
40:11Saved her life.
40:12Yeah, he did. By now, at least she should be able to talk. So I want to go and see
40:17if I can
40:17meet with her and get a statement from her.
40:24Hopefully her husband was there too. I mean, he was...
40:26He was out there, right?
40:27Yeah, he was out there. So, I mean, I don't think he saw, like, what happened,
40:31but he was there, like, I think during the aftermath.
40:34There it is right here.
40:39How you doing?
40:41Good. How you doing, sir?
40:43You want me to wait out here?
40:44Good morning.
40:45Okay. Miss Page, how you doing?
40:48It's so good to see you.
40:50So good to see you.
40:51You look good.
40:52Yeah.
40:54I never got a chance to actually talk to you about the incident. That's why I'm here basically
40:59to get a statement from you. When I came to the hospital, even though you were up, you still
41:03couldn't talk at the time. So, and I hate to rehash this, because I know it's extremely
41:08hard for you, but can you remember, like, the person who did this to you, did you have
41:12any type of interaction with him before it happened?
41:16I didn't know him.
41:17Did you see him?
41:19I never see him. I saw him.
41:20Okay.
41:21He ran across the street. He hit me with the knife. I thought it was a punch. And he put,
41:30lay here, lay here. He straddled the chair. And he dropped his knife. He picked it up so
41:38I looked that way. And he punched me on the air. And I said, no, B. And I said, oh,
41:48and
41:48I grabbed him in his neck. Like, I caught him like a claw in his neck. And I punched him
41:54back.
41:54I said, this is not going to work. And he went to just jab him in my neck. And jabbed
42:01me like,
42:02just kept on hitting me. And I kept on hitting him. And he couldn't take it. He took my chair.
42:08He turned it over. And he hit me down. And I heard pow. And everything stopped.
42:18Mm-hmm. Yeah, everything stopped.
42:26Without the security guard there, I mean, that, you know, it would have been a different outcome.
42:31After suffering from something like this, Ms. Emma is definitely resilient. You know,
42:34she embodies everything about New Orleans.
42:36Yeah.
42:38Okay.
42:38Okay.
42:38She reminds me of one of those New Orleans grandmothers, you know.
42:42Something will happen and they'll still be out in the street just, like, you know,
42:45just doing what they want to do. They won't let anything get them down. I appreciate you talking
42:49to me today, Mr. Page. Thanks for taking the time, Mr. Page. We appreciate y'all, right?
42:53So good seeing you again. You be safe out here, okay? I'm so happy you're doing well.
42:58And oh, yo, my hero. Oh, thank you. Thank you.
