00:36the mistakes were severe i trusted you with my dreams how dare you take my life away from me
00:47thousands of aspiring models stood in line for a chance to be america's next top model
00:52i'm from sightless missouri virginia south lake city utah just come one up we are actually
00:57looking to give someone a dynamic career tyra really was the holy grail
01:05tyra banks was the air that we breathed everyone wanted to be her but truth doesn't matter she was
01:15a hardcore the crazy the models were the better ratings they got on television
01:32it was a tv show tyra was trying to create great television in 2020 top model clips started showing
01:55up on social media yo tyra and her little crew they were hella problematic gen z god bless them
02:01were like hey this is bad we are actually going to switch your ethnicity this is racist this is all
02:09people see easy read beautiful color girl this is abusive
02:17tyra declined many requests to give a public statement which is why her essence was so significant
02:23i refuse to have my legacy be about some stuff linked together on the internet
02:34you're breaking the girls down for public consumption i was rooting for you we were all
02:39rooting for you how dare you i had never shaved my head like that before then they throw you out

02:45the world and they're like yeah feed you to the walls they're not looking for the next model they could
02:49care less all tyra is doing is counting her money it wasn't a modeling competition it was psychological

03:32and then i was like surprise you're going to be down the street from skid row
03:39boy that was sketchy times i guess it was um maybe it was cheaper maybe it was cheaper
03:52tyra banks was not just a model she was a superstar
04:01top model was a pop culture sensation tyra considers herself an ugly duckling there's this one image that
04:09she uses consistently anytime she talks about body images she always starts with that photo it wasn't just
04:14that gawky cute skinny oh she's so gawky and young it was i looked ill people thought i was sick

04:19used to stare at me she was discovered around 17 and then she made her way to paris
04:27and then took over the runways from there
04:32tyra was a victoria's secret angel she was on the cover of the sports illustrated swimsuit issue
04:40but by the mid-2000s tyra was no longer a 17 year old skinny little model and so for tyra's
04:48career to
04:48continue she had to grow outside of just the modeling world the early 2000s was like the wild wild west
04:57not just for the the real world survivor american idol were exploding in popularity and tyra banks
05:09wanted to be a part of it she had gone on to do some acting some bit parts but she
05:14never really made it
05:15big the last time tyra was in my memory as part of like popular culture was when she was dating

05:25weber and i can't imagine that the tyra banks would like to go out on being just chris weber's
05:32girlfriend ex-girlfriend tyra wanted to extend her career and extend her visibility the entertainment
05:41industry has always been very skeptical of models and whether or not they can act and so it was really
05:48smart for tyra to say the best role for me to play is me everybody out here wants to be
05:55america's next
05:56top model way into the camera because i'm involved in being part of the fashion industry for so long
06:04it's quality control it's not going to be like a joke the person that wins is going to go from
06:08being
06:08nobody to being the star in eight weeks everyone wanted to be the next tyra banks but the show was
06:17not
06:17only about trying to be a model it was what happens when you take a dozen strangers and make them
06:22live
06:22together kind of show i went in there so innocent i thought i've never been a model before i'm just
06:29learning who are these fabulous girls in this world that i want to be a part of a lot of
06:34them were just
06:35out of high school they thought that they would have the chance to have mentorship under tyra and
06:40actually move towards a successful modeling career it happened really really fast here i am in the house
06:47i live with the girls 24 7 every day really started off with tyro showing up when it was time
06:54to do the
06:55competition and that's when we had an idea of what the day was going to be like so today you
07:01guys are
07:01shooting a commercial so this is where your stardom is solidified what's lovely it's formulaic and we love
07:08a formula first there's always like a mini challenge or some sort of weird test you'll be stepping on
07:14and off a moving carousel usually something that is loosely applied to the world of modeling you're
07:25gonna have to balance these items on top of your head and then one of the most defining things about
07:34top model is the makeover episode it usually comes around as a third to fourth episode depending
07:43tyra comes in and is like all right you guys basically you guys all look bad i know how to
07:49make you look good and it did seem like the makeovers were engineered to make at least three people cry
07:56i'm like a boy right now yeah it's a little oliver twist but when they style it it's your makeup
08:01done it's gonna be so pretty gotta trust me okay the makeup episodes every season were appointment
08:07television and not because they were good they want to see if you react excessively to stress
08:15to make a good show and so in the fasting process they asked personality questions to see whether or not
08:22you are a volatile person we have a psychologist who comes and evaluates them even before they're chosen
08:30the psych evaluations were no joke i was in a room for two to four hours they would ask have
08:36you ever
08:37thought i wanted to commit suicide or hurt somebody hurt yourself either you're depressed
08:41it also shows tyra do we think they can handle the pressure
08:46i don't like to cast for conflict we just cast strong personalities
08:53on my psychological evaluation one of the questions that they asked was about my childhood
08:59it did make me feel uncomfortable but then i was like well this is reality tv so i shrugged it
09:05off as
09:05nothing the show is pretty transparent about how it wants to mine the backstories of its contestants
09:14tyra is trying to make a show that's entertaining even if it is a little exploitative so what's this
09:20about your relationship with your mom they kept trying to pick and get more information
09:25about my mom my mom was my abuser my mom is the one that tortured me my whole life
09:35they ask what kind of abuse how do you think your mom would feel right now
09:44the show is shocking audiences by putting not just explosive confrontations on screen
09:51you're basically presenting yourself like a moron okay and what are you doing alcoholic
09:56bitch but also asking a lot of its contestants to perform their kind of trauma on screen
10:02you might as well just
10:12i wasn't eating correctly i wasn't sleeping
10:17and i probably had a couple too many glasses of wine
10:24i was just like always one moment away from like fully almost like losing it
10:32because they were weaponizing my childhood trauma they just with me emotionally
10:40i was sleeping outside on the porch well that's because she's drunk that girl has a lot of issues
10:50tyra made me look absolutely crazy
10:54i felt like she decided we're gonna make a mockery of you and then the whole world on top of
10:59that is
11:00gonna call you crazy and make fun of you corinne calls me an alcoholic
11:05bitch that set the tone of what i've been called around the globe for over 15 years
11:13i was set up to be publicly humiliated on repeat forever
11:22i got into the editing bay and i was like i loved it fun putting it together editing it
11:31not only is tyra on set but tyra goes to every single editing session
11:40she really sits there and knows exactly what she wants to see fold out on tape
11:45so do you care to comment on ken mock

11:55no absolutely not tyra control freak i don't know what you're talking about
12:02anyone who likes to think that tyra is just the face of the show
12:06i'm here to tell you that that is a complete lie
12:10tyra is the puppeteer that was being psychologically tortured for the entertainment of the world
12:21and for tyra banks and the network's profit and she did the same thing to all the other girls
12:35so are you going to come back next season to uh america's top of all
12:38of course until they get sick of me or i say something wrong and they fire me
13:09in between a second wife as a lemon a little girl and boca
13:12and all the people may want to probably watch that the movie will record in fact
13:12someone who is not going to censor herself I'm Janice Dickinson I am the
13:18world's first supermodel I coined the term ask anybody it was me ha ha I cast
13:27Janice she was 100% my idea I definitely wanted her because I was like you know
13:32what she seems like she's gonna be really honest and really tell it like it
13:35is I had no idea she's gonna be as honest and as tell it like it is as she
13:39is looks like you landed from another planet because you have so much teeth
13:44you deranged this photograph looks like the batteries died in her vibrator the
13:50producers of America's Next Top Model especially Tyra were begging me to be
13:55harsher and cruel like Simon Cowell was on American Idol Tyra was able to allow
14:03Janice to be the bully in a way that gave Tyra plausible deniability it's like a
14:08Hitchcock film go back and forth back and forth really fast to see what I mean
14:16if she doesn't want to be the one to say you look fat and disgusting your thighs
14:20usually she doesn't have to say it because Janice is going to be willing to
14:24take the lump on that you gotta work on the thighs that the booty thing you gotta
14:28kind of you really watch the diet next says I was taken back by the judges in
14:34their comments one minute they're saying oh you're just so beautiful the next
14:39minute oh your body look at this you have all these issues
14:42Joanna has a lovely face I think she needs to definitely work on her body I
14:46think you know I wouldn't want to see her in a swimsuit it almost felt like
14:49you're in this vortex of a narcissistic relationship going from the love
14:54bombing back to getting devalued at the drop of the hat see her back Joanna has one
15:01problem and it's the midriff I didn't know what my backside really looked like
15:08and to have cameras really zoning in on that and to be so young and to have you
15:14know other people commenting there was a level of I want to say cruelness at that
15:20time that you wouldn't be able to get away with saying in this moment why don't
15:24we go around the room and talk about imperfection what do you think yours is it really kind of
15:31messed with my self-esteem if you're sporting a gut then you turn to the side and disguise it
15:40really honestly putting that on TV was really dangerous because I was so so thin I've had so
15:49many people message me and say that they developed eating disorders after watching
15:53and it sucks I'm really very interesting in the early aughts the biggest thing that I remember
16:04about Tyra was that people kept talking about how curvy she was I represent the modeling world is a body
16:10that's fuller it's thicker it's got a booty in this industry yeah I'm like 20 pounds heavier than
16:17these girls girl her body type is not that of like a 2000s era model like a cape moss skinny
16:25heroine chic Tyra was not that this is the era where the idea was the double zero can you be
16:32able to
16:32wear low-rise pants and you know not have love handles when Tyra would say stuff to people about
16:39their bodies it felt like it was coming from like a place like deep in there where she was like
16:45I
16:45haven't I haven't dealt with this yet so let me just put it on you instead I got the same
16:49stomach girl
16:49but I know how to hold it in you got to work what you got it seems like Tyra is
16:54sort of working her
16:55out on other people she's been explicit that she was viewed as too big for the runway and Tyra really
17:02projected a lot of her traumas onto women who weren't necessarily ready to recede it
17:09immediately I was like they're gonna talk about my weight that's gonna be the thing you're a little
17:13perhaps nervous about your body every question everything we did got tied back to my weight when I got
17:21the makeover I've looked great it has since become the Karen haircut it was like that short
17:27blonde with the at the time it was cool but they were like are you worried that the short hair
17:33is
17:34gonna make you look fatter what is it like being the biggest girl I realized that I had been brought
17:42to this show to be other like they were all the ideal they were all what everyone in America every
17:49woman should aspire to look like and I was something else it just confirmed every bad thought that an
17:58eating disorder had already planted in my head there would always be a plus-size bottle or two and they
18:06were kind of cannon fodder it was on one hand saying we want women of all sizes but then when
18:13there were
18:13women of all sizes treating the women of different sizes like do you know your plus-size
18:18stuff a gut baby anything hanging out it looks nasty they were just recruiting these women who
18:24weren't traditional model size and then throwing them to the wolves do you think that I'm gonna be
18:29able to get a rack like this loaded with clothes in your size you don't think that you realize how
18:35this whole modeling thing works when she came in Sarah was openly a plus-size model but then over the
18:43course of filming Sarah lost weight and that became a problem lost quite a bit of weight people
18:48have said that and and I haven't been trying to but people keep mentioning it Sarah was told that
18:54you're pretty despite this thing and by virtue of what production has you doing you lose weight and
19:02they hold that against you the judges feel like you Sarah your place in the industry is kind of confusing
19:09right now because models are so so so skinny or they're plus size was told I was too thin for
19:17a
19:17plus-size model but too fat to be in America's Next Top model Tyra Banks can't shake up standards of
19:24beauty while ultimately crowning the person who suits the standard of beauty here she is reinforcing the
19:32status quo when she promised us the opposite so when you create an environment that you told me was
19:39gonna be better than this and then you make it worse that's uh one of the things the viewers never
19:56really realized we were going through is the amount of deliberation and the feedback from the judges we
20:03might see a clip of one comment I think it's the worst picture I've ever seen in my life your
20:09hair looks
20:10like a cockatoo there and here but we would be in front of the judges for hours the elimination days
20:17we're usually minimum 12 hours sometimes 18 until two three four in the morning on the first day one
20:27of the crew members warned us they were like look a girl faints every week so if you feel like
20:36you're
20:36feeling faint don't be a hero raise your hand and someone will come help you and I remember I thought
20:43like oh my god these skinny bitches can't even stand for a while like and they're fainting first day it
20:49was me I had to raise my hand and I almost went down all of us were sleep deprived all
20:55of us weren't
20:56able to eat enough food they know what they're doing it's all intentional if you can get through the
21:04pressure and look like a model and get through judging and get through us being evil just knock you down
21:12and
21:13build you back up then you have what it takes to become America's next model the rules in the house
21:19were challenging lights were always on even when you were ready to go to bed there was no cell phone
21:25usage you were not allowed to leave the house no windows were allowed to be opened if we didn't
21:31follow the rules we would be punished they could take away our books take away our iPods so it would
21:38have to sit in silence for hours you're squeezing into an apartment with so many girls and only one
21:45bathrooms working and the rules are we will not film you in the shower or in the toilet stalls if
21:52there's only one of you but the second there's two of you we can film you and also you guys
21:57should
21:57shower together for the environment you're almost an animal for spectator sport versus a human being
22:08felt like it was an experiment to see how easy we could crack and break for the most part on
22:17my season
22:17the producers just wanted to instigate conflict but the photo shoot in Africa was something else you're gonna
22:25be dancing with three hot guys what a lot of people didn't see was that like behind the scenes the
22:34male model Burkini was actually hardcore flirting with me telling me that he was gonna come to the
22:42States and find me and he wanted to be with me and it was it was just a lot you
22:47need that sorry sorry
22:49I gotta go ride the wardrobe after this this is so cringe to watch gotta break this out he was
22:57like
22:57grunting as he was dancing with me and he stood a lot closer to me than the other models he
23:02had on
23:02this tiny little loincloth uh fabric and then it just got to the point where I realized that he
23:09actually had an erection what's the issue I know it's not about feeling comfortable but here and
23:16moaning it it just threw me off moaning where like on me like I'm sorry I just didn't feel comfortable
23:22it was flipped into me being a bit of a diva we're here in a professional situation they're like 50
23:30of us
23:30in here right right we we're going with the flow when your space is invaded and you're put in a
23:40tough
23:40situation it almost feels even more sinister to be in front of everyone I really thought that I would
23:51be applauded for speaking up for myself what's even crazier to me about that scenario is that
24:00it's not a real job Kenya wasn't a girl who had to get the job done so that she can
24:06pay her bills
24:07next week this was a fake shoot on a fake show and there are people in charge who can do
24:15something
24:15about it there has to be a way that you can handle it you know you have to be able
24:19to be in control
24:20like with your feminine wiles like boy you best to back up before I knock you upside the head
24:25you do it in a fun way where he knows to back the heck up but it doesn't really put
24:30static in the air
24:30because then it makes you uncomfortable Tyra Banks reprimanded you for not handling real sexual
24:37harassment on a fake shoot you have to wonder what Tyra went through to think that that's the way you
24:43handle a situation like that but then my empathy has to go out the window because you visited upon that
24:50girl something that was probably traumatic to you it's just so interesting like watching it back to
24:57little Kenya because Tyra's a grown woman at this time I was 19 years old and it should have never
25:07unfolded that way moments like what Jada endured are particularly frustrating because ultimately what
25:18you're doing is a little bit of a humiliation ritual do you think oh my god okay I say I
25:23don't like
25:24Jada's partner Nacho tells Jada that he's even like black girls that man just was like I don't want to
25:30kiss her I don't really like black girls again a fake shoot with a real racist in a fake scenario
25:40that you all created well you're gonna have to give him a kiss to make him love some black girls
25:45because what do they say once they go black they don't go back there you go Jada you can't cry
25:52because we don't have time to fix your makeup I can't do this she expressed her discomfort over
25:59and over and over again and they made her do this fake commercial with a real racist you told me
26:08that
26:08this is the guy that said that he didn't want to kiss a black girl he doesn't like black girls
26:13oh he's just an
26:14extra that should not have stopped her from doing the job that she was sent there to do at what
26:20point do you get to put your hands up and say enough is enough I can actually believe that Tyra
26:34think that representation feels important I want to be out like I'm gay and I am I'm really proud of
26:42it but in the wrong hands is representation enough it absolutely is not I think there's a certain thing
26:48of being proud like I'm black and proud you know what I mean but I'm not like walking on the
26:51red carpet
26:52I'm black I'm proud one of the things that queer phobia kind of generates is this this idea that
26:58like of a looming predator I can't be safe around you because you are attracted to my gender therefore
27:02anything you do is automatically sexual can you think I'm beautiful yeah it becomes again this
27:11contradictory message in which it's we want to support queer inclusivity but we also need to
27:17somehow make a spectacle of it at the same time in those early days you couldn't find lesbians
27:23anywhere on television outside of Ellen and you certainly couldn't find a black lesbian we know
27:28you're a lesbian how do you feel about expressing that on national television people never assume
27:34I'm gay I thought my sexuality this was something between me and everybody that was producing the
27:39project but Tyra Banks choosing to say that I was gay and putting that out there without talking to
27:44me first I was floored we're talking the 90s 2000s what do you think about that time being openly
27:52homosexual was actively exposing yourself to danger I just wondered what did she think was going to
27:58happen to me afterwards I would get random calls from churches telling me to come back to the Lord
28:06I didn't understand how churches got my number if you were to ask Tyra I'm sure she would say well
28:12I
28:12gave you a platform but a platform it's not safety it's scrutiny it's surveillance it's inviting millions
28:20of people to have judgments on how you live your life one of the first representations of a trans
28:27woman on television was on top model but the other girls weren't very nice to Isis growing up in the
28:34South you don't exactly run into a piece she every day you walk around like that in a small town
28:39you
28:39were shot the transphobia is harder to swallow than some of the other stuff because there wasn't
28:47really any other trans representation on the show and so it really does feel like Isis is being picked
28:52on I think Tyra's belief is I should get a pat on the back simply for the idea of acknowledging
29:00that
29:00a trans person exists and is worth talking to but if you are someone with visible marginal identities
29:07there's little reward in being the primary person to break a boundary you're the person who gets all
29:14of the backlash but she actually used to be he and I think still is Tyra wasn't trying to help
29:21these
29:21girls you're trying to create a great TV show I think in the first couple seasons that tried to
29:31take itself a little bit seriously and then it just got like wacky these are giant Madagascar hissing
29:37cockroaches oh he's going crazy we were put through things that would never happen in real life so
29:43girls are going to be shooting with a bull listen I think there is some thrill in watching pretty
29:54people be tortured these girls have to be prepared to do almost anything to sell a garment I'm freaking
30:01bleeding America's next top model there's also a social experiment what people are willing to do
30:09for fame what they're willing to enjoy to get it you find out what someone's fear is and then you
30:15find
30:15a way to exploit it on television if you find out the girl is afraid of spiders guess what she's
30:21gonna be
30:21doing he's definitely afraid a photo shoot with spiders really they get a tissue for her please
30:30they made these models work with snakes take press take press yes okay David heights do you want to
30:39come up Katie okay dangling over a pit probably was more of a liability than an actual shot for a
30:49magazine but I thought there's a modeling contract eventually that you're going to be able to have
30:54just go for it there were a lot of things done in top model that they got wrong and one
31:07challenge got
31:08it very wrong I think Hulu banned this one now someone should have refused to do that and yet no
31:16one did
31:23the got milk challenge photo shoot was shocking degrading it was just stupid that episode there are
31:35literally people in blackface on TV in the 2000s the challenge here really is taking on the persona of
31:45that other ethnicity everyone seems kind of like okay girl I guess I'll do this because I'd like to
31:52win the show but I remember watching that as it was airing and being like I don't know man this
31:57doesn't
31:58seem I don't think we should be doing this Michelle an Eskimo Kenya Korean Brittany an African-American woman I
32:09think Tyra thinks that she's introduced a conversation about us all being one and what are the things that
32:14bring us together versus bring us apart but instead it's like a caricature of existing racist tropes
32:19it should be noted that so many of the creatives working on top model were people of color Tyra of
32:29black woman can mock an Asian man they knew what they were doing was edgy but they viewed it as
32:40edgy and
32:41not wrong at the time because Tyra Banks is an African-American woman and she's wanting me to
32:48become to transport me into an African-American woman I truly didn't see anything of it none of
32:54us did and whatever Tyra says us do we do no one wants to go home as a 19 year
33:01old you don't really
33:02have the courage at that time to say hey this is uh you know isn't politically correct or you know
33:09whatever you may feel because there was a potential for you to go home and for this whole dream and
33:14opportunity to just be over Tyra had the ability to make or break you we're all scared of Tyra I
33:23think
33:23that the race swap challenges that the show did a couple of times in some ways have become a little
33:28bit of a scapegoat so that contemporary reality television doesn't have to grapple with its own
33:33issues of racism it's not so much that the race swap itself as a challenge was inherently offensive
33:39although it's like it's offensive the worst thing about that challenge was the judging panel and the
33:46ways that they seem to understand racial identity such that it's a thing that can be authentically
33:53performed Brittany sister you look like a black girl girl feeling it oh I loved it what's one thing
34:02if you take a young white woman and put some dark makeup on her in an afro wig it's another
34:08thing to
34:09say you need to embody blackness and celebrate her for you know I don't know just sort of acting like
34:15she
34:15has an attitude you realize the show wants to celebrate blackness but only a very limited idea
34:22of what blackness can be that's that ghetto walk if she took a little bit of hoochie out of that
34:28ghetto
34:28walk that would have been Naomi Tyra seemed weirdly obsessed with and repulsed by all things ghetto like
34:35obvious markers of like lower middle class lower class black people but then Tyra always went out of
34:44her way to cast women who were coded in that way do you really think you can have a cover
34:51girl
34:51contract with the gap in your mouth yeah why not this is all people see it's easy read beautiful
34:55color girl it's not marketable I remember feeling really uncomfortable by this idea that Danny's gap
35:01needed to be fixed the show seemed to be equating her gap with a particular type of blackness that was
35:09undesirable within that industry being unapologetically working class and black at the same time it prohibits
35:17you from being able to be viewed as relatable so as a result you're going to be consistently punished
35:22for being a product of your own circumstances Chelsea we love your teeth we'd love to exaggerate back and
35:30take you a little bit more to Lauren and then to try to expand this white girl's teeth on camera
35:37is not
35:39a contradiction that feels out of place at all with Tyra Tyra Banks as a black woman there are many
35:51things that she did that she knew better with your skin texture being an African-American woman it should
35:56be like butter at the retouching session your photo was the hardest that we had to do there's no way
36:03that I believe that it's lost on Tyra how offensive and hurtful it is to call a black woman especially
36:08a
36:08dark-skinned one ashy when she said my skin texture was too rough she knew my skin texture wasn't too
36:13rough
36:13she knew what she was doing as a black woman in high fashion I'm sure Tyra was made to feel
36:23ghetto
36:24lower class inferior and so I can imagine that has a lot to do with her obsession with black
36:31presentation in different spaces but the thing is your job is to get therapy not 20 years of abusive
36:41television those girls didn't deserve that the media really had a field day with this idea of Tyra Banks
36:57and Naomi Campbell beefing behind the scenes for years supermodel Tyra Banks was in the middle of a
37:03bitter feud with another top model Naomi Campbell Tyra felt like she was bullied by Naomi Campbell that
37:11there wasn't room for two black girls in the industry I think I've been a serious victim of pitting one
37:17black model against another my mom would look at fashion magazines it's just Iman that's all you saw
37:23and then it was just Beverly Johnson and it was just Naomi Campbell do you remember that Times article
37:30Beyonce's first solo effort is good but she's no Ashanti that's what this is it's not just Tyra who
37:39makes the marginalized community feel like there can only be one it really made me angry as I'm saying
37:46in order for me to be successful I have to knock someone out so that means when I get really
37:50up there
37:50that somebody's gonna come and knock me out I think she really did feel like she was sort of um
37:54competing with Naomi when you're presented as the other person's replacement maybe you do get mean and
38:01maybe you do get jealous and maybe you do get catty but I think Tyra's been working out her Naomi
38:08rivalry with every black woman she's come across in the 30 years since I don't even think Tyra really
38:15wants any of us to become stars Tyra didn't want any competition Tyra was breaking the girls down so
38:23she could feel better about herself she went off on one girl that was so frightening thought I was
