It was twenty years ago that Speciosa sprang a surprise in the 1000 Guineas for trainer Pam Sly and connections. In the years since then Speciosa has lived with Pam as a broodmare producing generations of runners for her trainer. TDN recently paid the pair a visit to relive that faithful day.

00:0220 years ago a filly named Speziosa sprang a surprise in the 1000 guineas for trainer Pam
00:07Sly in connections known as the monster from the fens the filly relished the soft going and defied
00:14her odds for a fairy tale victory in the years since then Speziosa has lived as a broodmare with
00:20Pam in what was admittedly a special visit for this particular TDN reporter Pam relives the 1000
00:27guineas victory we bought Speziosa from the breeze up sails I think she was a bit sparky then but I
00:34went with a friend Roger Marley who he used to ride for me as a national hunter jockey I said
00:39look I'm
00:40looking I've only got 30 grand to spend so he we went around went to see Willie Brown and well
00:46he
00:46said I've got this filly here and looked at one or two other bits and she was a nice filly
00:51actually
00:51she only made 30 grand she was spot-on for us she was always very easy to ride very easy
00:58out on the
00:58gallops and everything she was just a bit sparky in the box she used to kick the wall so in
01:03the end
01:04we we lined the walls with some rubber stuff such herself she had a rubber mat on the floor who'd
01:11have
01:11the luck of buying a guinea sauce it is luck I mean you can be as professional as you like
01:18but
01:18there are a lot of lucky stories aren't there the Phillies classic the Stan James 1000 guineas
01:24and away they jump in the guineas you see we were drawn on the stand side weren't we so that
01:29worked
01:29quite well because the rail was here but when she won at Beverly she came right across to the stand
01:35rail
01:35there drifted right across but that's just her trait I suppose Mickey said she'll take the beating
01:42well she did I mean everything turned out right for her the draw was good on that side with her
01:47just
01:47hanging a shade that way was drizzling wet on the day of the guineas and that suited her down to
01:52the
01:52ground the bookmakers in Whittlesea weren't very happy because it totally cleaned them out they
02:03couldn't pay out everybody a lot of people that they had new bathrooms new cookers Robert Cooper he
02:10bought a new cooker when I came home I had to go and have a walk through the spinny on
02:14my own with
02:16my dogs they all went in the house I think we had fish and chips at night there was a
02:21house was just
02:22full of people eating fish and chips it's just amazing it's made a lot of difference by having
02:27all these lovely young horses I've got now all grandchildren out of her if only she knew what
02:32she'd got hopefully she gone some she'll gone a few more years yet but she looks well so keeps her
02:39friend organized she does if her friend goes near nobody gets back she says I mean she still flies
02:45about like a two-year-old bucking kicking it's amazing but um no she's a lovely old girl really
