00:04From 5th century Israel comes the story of King David and the Giant.
00:08In this story, King David escapes a dangerous predicament by invoking a name, the all-powerful name of God.
00:22You know the story of David and Goliath.
00:26How little David killed the giant with a slingshot.
00:30And you might know that David became a king of ancient Israel during the days of the Bible.
00:36But you probably didn't know that Goliath had a younger brother.
00:40He was bigger than Goliath and meaner.
00:44His name was Ishbi Benab.
00:46He lived in a cave in the desert.
00:49That cave was a dark and terrible place, full of snakes and bats and bones.
00:57Ishbi Benab squatted on a pile of bones, thinking up ways to get even with King David for killing his
01:04older brother.
01:07One day, while hunting, King David chased a deer right into Ishbi Benab's cave.
01:14Ishbi Benab grabbed him and chained him up.
01:18I'll get even with you for killing my brother.
01:24Is there anything in the world that will make you let me go?
01:27If you can tell me the name of God, then I'll let you go.
01:33Nobody knows the name of God, and nobody ever will.
01:36In that case, I'll just have to throw you to my hungry lions.
01:44Meanwhile, at the royal palace, David's friend, General Abishai, worried about the king.
01:51General Abishai summoned a thousand soldiers and a thousand horses,
01:55a thousand spear carriers and a thousand archers with bows and arrows,
01:59and they all hurried into the desert to look for King David.
02:03Inside the cave, the giant heard a clanking and a rattling and a clatter of a thousand hooves.
02:11He looked outside and saw General Abishai with the army of Israel.
02:15He yanked King David out of the chains, dragged him out where Abishai could see him.
02:21Then he threw King David up into the air, up into the clouds.
02:26To make matters worse, the giant brought out his cage of lions,
02:33so that when David finally fell down from the sky,
02:36he would land right inside the cage and be killed.
02:40They watched King David rise farther and farther into the air,
02:45and at that very moment, they saw a miracle.
02:50Up in the sky, the clouds parted, and they saw God himself.
02:56God leaned forward and whispered his name to King David.
03:03Just as he started to fall to earth, David shouted to Ish-bibinab,
03:07I'll tell you the name of God.
03:10God's name is...
03:13But I don't know what King David said,
03:15because no one else before or since has ever known God's name.
03:20The moment he spoke the name of God,
03:22David stopped falling and floated back to earth.
03:28When the giant heard the name of God,
03:30he knew he was beaten.
03:32He stomped on the ground,
03:33and he stomped so hard that the desert opened up,
03:36and it swallowed Ish-bibinab.
03:39And that giant was never heard from again.
03:43It's a good thing the story turned out this way,
03:45because if David didn't overhear the name of God,
03:49and if he didn't escape from Ish-bibinab,
03:51then he and his wife would never have had a baby boy,
03:55and that boy would never have grown up to be wise King Solomon.
03:58And history would be different than it is today.
04:02And history would be different than it is today.
04:32All right, let's go.
