How’s My Driving?: Why Every Other Driver Doesn’t Seem to Have A Clue
Synopsis: This non-fiction work propounds the thesis that one of the major contributors to the inordinate amount of car crashes Americans endure each year is the sense of overconfidence that most American drivers bring to our roads. It argues that most drivers would benefit immensely from examining their own driving practices thoroughly and from incorporating more risk-averse habits rather than operating with the illusion of invincibility.
It presents various theorems that delineate the most common errors and catalysts behind car crashes, further explaining how drivers can often circumvent such pitfalls by avoiding distractions on the road, using their turn signals and headlights as intended, and making full use of all of the safety features that modern cars are now equipped with.
The book relays the excruciating details of several catastrophic car crashes that resulted in major injuries in order to disabuse readers of the common notion that some drivers are immune to such outcomes on the road. It employs an abundance of firsthand and secondhand accounts to drive home the point that car accidents can occur to anyone, regardless of their social class or degree of driving aptitude and experience. It asserts that, therefore, the greatest obstacle to reducing the car crash rate in the US may be the intransigence of drivers who operate as if they were immortal and immune to the consequences of inattentive or reckless driving.

00:30Be good, be very good
00:34Hey guys, it's me, Yaya Diamond
00:36What's up, peoples? How you doing?
00:38It is a great day
00:39I'm so excited to be here
00:40And I have an amazing guest on the show
00:43Hey, how is your driving?
00:45Hmm, if you're in Florida, it's really bad
00:48I'm not gonna lie to you
00:49If you're in Jersey
00:50Hey, I went to Jersey
00:52Their driving's horrible
00:54But how is your driving?
00:55We're gonna have Mr. Steve on the show today
00:59And I don't wanna, like, torture his last name
01:02So I'm gonna have him say his last name
01:05Welcome, Steve, to the show
01:07Thank you so much for having us in your life today
01:10How do you pronounce your last name?
01:13It pronounces Jadik
01:14Oh, see, no
01:16You wouldn't have got it
01:17No
01:18No
01:19But I get it now
01:21But thank you so much for being here today
01:24You know, what prompted you to, first of all
01:27And I have to ask this
01:28Before we get into the normal questions
01:30What prompted you to write this book?
01:33Well
01:35I had a career in
01:38I went in the Navy
01:39And I spent time there
01:42And then I got out
01:43And I went into
01:44Commercial nuclear power generation field
01:47And did my career there
01:49And I got out
01:50And my wife and I moved to Florida
01:53And I went to work for an insurance company
01:57And I got my state license
01:58And the, what was I gonna say?
02:04I got my state license
02:06And I spent about seven years
02:09Working for this insurance company
02:11Allstate
02:11I hope it's okay to mention their name
02:14That's fine
02:15Okay
02:16In any case
02:18One day, you know
02:19When you work for somebody
02:22And then you notice things
02:23When they come on TV
02:25Your ears kind of pop a little bit
02:27When you realize that it's
02:28The same company that you work for
02:30So I was paying particularly close attention
02:33To this commercial that they had
02:35It was about 45 seconds long
02:39And the 45 seconds
02:42Showed a family
02:43There were four people in the living room
02:45And it was, clearly it was a mother and father
02:48And then it was two teenagers
02:50And those two teenagers were
02:51Looked like they were getting ready
02:53To go to the prom
02:56So they look like everybody's happy
02:58Mom's taking all kinds of pictures
03:00And they go out onto the front porch
03:04And you can see the teenagers
03:05Go walking down towards the car
03:08And they get in the car
03:11And they start to pull out of the driveway
03:12And then across the screen
03:14Passes this banner
03:15And the banner said
03:17Every year 6,000 teenagers
03:20Get in their cars
03:20And they go away
03:22And they don't come home
03:23And I was like
03:25That's terrible
03:26It is terrible
03:27So I wondered to myself
03:29Where did they get that information
03:31I mean it's a high number
03:33I knew it
03:33But I didn't realize it was that high
03:37So what I did is
03:39I did a little investigation
03:40And I came up with an understanding
03:44Allstate had
03:46Constricted
03:47U.S. News
03:48To do this 10-year study
03:50And I don't know if it was 1995 to 2005
03:53But anyway
03:53It was a 10-year study
03:54And during that 10 years
03:56They recorded 60,600 teenagers
04:00Fatalities
04:01And
04:03That's where the 6,000 per year came from
04:05Now what I wondered
04:07When I saw that number
04:10Was
04:10How many people didn't make the list
04:12How many people are in wheelchairs
04:14Or are quadriplegics in bed
04:17And their lives are ruined forever
04:21And then I thought to myself
04:22How could I possibly relate to
04:26Them in a way that
04:27You know
04:28People that are not disabled
04:29Don't think they'll ever become disabled
04:31And
04:32So I thought
04:33How can I get to them
04:35And I
04:35I talked with a friend of mine
04:38And we decided that
04:39The only way to get to them
04:40Would be something that they could read
04:41And read again and again
04:43So I started writing a book
04:45Never written one before
04:46But
04:47I started writing a book
04:48And it took me a long time
04:50But
04:51I got
04:52I got
04:53You're looking at
04:54A serious number of revisions
04:56At this point right now
04:57Wow
04:59But that's why I did it
05:00And
05:01And
05:02It's my hope
05:03And sincere
05:04Wish
05:05That somebody's life is saved
05:07As a result of this
05:07Definitely
05:08And
05:09You know
05:09Okay
05:10So the 10-year study
05:11Was just for
05:11Teenage drivers
05:13That's right
05:14Wow
05:15Just
05:16That's
05:16The average number of people
05:19That die in the United States
05:21On average
05:22For the last
05:2260 years
05:24Is in the order of about
05:2542,000 people
05:26Every single year
05:29That's
05:30Yeah
05:30It's disgusting
05:31That is crazy
05:33You know
05:35It
05:36It
05:36It doesn't
05:37It boggles my mind
05:38Because I can't understand
05:39Why
05:40We can tolerate
05:42Deaths like that
05:43And yet
05:44If an airplane goes down
05:46All kinds of
05:47Federal agencies
05:48Are involved
05:49To figure out why
05:50So it don't happen again
05:51Yeah
05:52Something
05:53Something wrong with
05:54I guess
05:55It's to the point now
05:56Where I guess
05:56It's okay to die
05:57By car accident
05:58And
05:59I don't
05:59I don't agree with that
06:00Yeah
06:01Definitely
06:01Especially
06:02Especially
06:03I'll explain to you
06:04A couple of things
06:04That happened in my life
06:05Which
06:06Make me
06:07Very
06:10Have a
06:11High desire
06:11To want to make sure
06:12That people don't get
06:13Involved in crashes
06:16Okay
06:17So
06:17In this book
06:18You have 10 principles
06:20To driver safety awareness
06:21What are those 10 principles
06:24Okay
06:24Let me
06:26Let me just go through
06:26Each one of them
06:28I had
06:29I actually
06:29When I was writing the book
06:31I wound up repeating myself
06:32A lot of particular instances
06:34So what I did is
06:35I created something called
06:36These theorems
06:37And what they wound up being
06:39Was something I could
06:40That's written in the front of the book
06:42And that people could go back
06:43And refer back to
06:44As they're reading through
06:45The
06:46The various pages
06:49The first one
06:51Says that
06:52It's necessary to understand
06:53That
06:53No one
06:54No one wants
06:56To be a bad driver on purpose
06:57Right
06:58And I
06:58I believe that with all my heart
07:00Except
07:00You know
07:01If there's a terrorist
07:02Or something like that
07:04The
07:05The second one
07:07Says to understand
07:08That the first person
07:09That you need to be concerned
07:11About safety
07:12Is yourself
07:13Yeah
07:13Because if you don't
07:15If you're not being safe
07:16For yourself
07:16Then who can do that
07:18The third principle
07:20Is to understand
07:21That going from point A
07:22To point B
07:23In the
07:26In a car
07:27Has to be done safely
07:29And it's got to be done
07:30On purpose
07:33Then
07:33Then to understand
07:34That what's obvious to me
07:36Is not obvious to you
07:37And I'll give you an example
07:38Of what comes to my mind
07:39Real quick
07:40When I say that
07:41Think of a glass
07:43Being half full
07:43Right
07:44So
07:44There are those
07:46Who would say
07:46Well it's half empty
07:47You know
07:48And back and forth
07:49So what's obvious to me
07:51Is not so obvious to you
07:52And that's the way it is
07:53When dealing with
07:54Technical topics
07:56Like driving
07:56Yeah
07:59Another one is
08:00To understand
08:00That my first hand
08:01Experiences
08:02Don't benefit
08:03Anybody other than me
08:04I mean
08:05I can't
08:06I cannot relate
08:07To you
08:07My first hand experience
08:09And have it
08:10Have it
08:10Have an impact
08:11On you
08:12Like it does on me
08:13Does that make sense
08:14It does
08:15It definitely does
08:16Okay
08:16Yeah
08:16Okay
08:17I understand that
08:19Crash free driving
08:20Helps to promote
08:21To set me up
08:23More easily
08:23For a crash
08:24Now that sounds
08:25Kind of weird
08:27But
08:28Did you ever succeed
08:29At something
08:30For a really
08:31Really
08:31Really long time
08:32And then all of a sudden
08:35Something goes wrong
08:36Oh yeah
08:37Something recently
08:39Just happened
08:39In New Jersey
08:41About five or six weeks ago
08:43There was a
08:45Airplane coming in
08:46For a landing
08:47And a fire engine
08:48Was dispatched
08:49Across the active runway
08:50And a collision
08:52Took place
08:53Between those two vehicles
08:54And the pilots
08:55On the airplane
08:56Were killed
08:57And I'm sure
08:58You've heard
08:58Of this
08:59Yeah
08:59I didn't hear about that
09:01And thank goodness
09:02Because that was
09:02Around the same time
09:03That I left
09:04Jersey
09:05Oh wow
09:06Yeah
09:07What a coincidence
09:08Huh
09:08Coincidence
09:09Well
09:10One of the things
09:11That I thought of
09:13And I'm
09:14I do not by
09:15Any means
09:16The authoritative
09:18Speaker on this
09:19But one of the things
09:19That I thought of
09:20Was
09:21I would bet
09:22That the fire truck
09:23Had been issued
09:24The order to go across
09:26Active runways
09:27Before
09:27And never
09:29Never
09:29Never
09:30Never
09:30Had a problem
09:31Yeah
09:32And so it seems
09:34To me that
09:34As the fire truck
09:37Was going across
09:38One of the things
09:39That might
09:39Made sense to do
09:41Would be to look
09:41Both ways
09:42Before you cross
09:43Yeah
09:43But since it
09:45Since it had always
09:45Been successful
09:47Maybe that doesn't happen
09:49Yeah
09:50So anyway
09:50That's
09:51That's one thing
09:53Understand driving
09:54Significantly slower
09:55This is a pet peeve of mine
09:57But I understand
09:58That driving
09:59Significantly slower
10:00Than traffic around me
10:01May be the reason
10:03For a traffic crash
10:03I had a friend of mine
10:05That I used to carpool with
10:06And he prided himself
10:08In going so much slower
10:10Than regular traffic
10:11And I
10:11Every time we got together
10:13And I'd ride
10:14He'd see
10:15He's going so much slower
10:16Backing 10, 12 cars
10:17Up behind him
10:18At a time
10:19And I tried to
10:20Just tell him
10:21You know
10:22Why are you doing this
10:24He's
10:24Well I'm driving slow
10:25Therefore I'm safe
10:26I said
10:26That's not necessarily true
10:28Because you got
10:2910, 15 cars
10:30Backed up behind you
10:31Somebody back there
10:32Is going to be upset
10:34And they're going to
10:34Take chances
10:35They wouldn't otherwise take
10:36Exactly
10:37And so
10:39That could lead
10:40Very easily
10:41To a traffic crash
10:42And the person
10:43Who was culpable
10:44In it
10:44Goes driving down
10:45The road
10:46Thinking they're
10:46A safe driver
10:49Understand that
10:50And this is
10:50This is going to
10:51Get you a little bit
10:52But understand
10:53That driving
10:54Or excuse me
10:55Stopping properly
10:57For an orange light
10:58Or a yellow light
10:59Or whatever you want
10:59I called it amber
11:00One time
11:01With some teenagers
11:02And they went
11:03What?
11:03What's amber?
11:06In any case
11:07But stopping
11:09Properly
11:09For
11:10An orange light
11:11May save me
11:12From a crash
11:14And you wonder
11:15How does that happen?
11:17If I stop
11:18Like I'm supposed to
11:19A red light
11:20And a yellow light
11:21Have exactly
11:21The same requirements
11:22They require you
11:24To stop behind
11:24The white line
11:25Behind the crosswalk
11:26To
11:28Keep pedestrians
11:29The right of way
11:30However
11:31The
11:32Yellow light
11:33Has a caveat
11:34That says
11:34If you can't
11:35Do it safely
11:36Then you're allowed
11:37To go through
11:38There are people
11:39Who will see
11:40That yellow light
11:41And what's the
11:42First thing they do?
11:43Speed up
11:43On the gas
11:44There you go
11:45They mash
11:45On the gas
11:46Level
11:46And it's just
11:47It's absolutely
11:48Amazing
11:49That
11:49You know
11:50That they would
11:50Think that
11:51That's going to
11:51Save them
11:52Anything
11:52So they hurry up
11:53And they get to
11:53Their next
11:55Traffic light
11:56For instance
11:56And they wind up
11:57In a crash
11:58And gee
11:58They wouldn't
11:59They wouldn't
11:59Have been there
11:59If they stopped
12:00For the light
12:00Yeah
12:01I understand
12:03That discourteous
12:04Behavior
12:05For drivers
12:06Is nothing more
12:07Than selfish thinking
12:09If you're
12:10If you're driving
12:11And you're doing
12:12It discourteously
12:13With other people
12:13On the road
12:14It's basically
12:15What you're saying
12:16Is I'm more
12:16Important than you
12:17And that's really
12:18Just selfish thinking
12:20There's no reason
12:21In the world
12:22Why you can't
12:22Be a courteous driver
12:24But
12:24People get caught
12:26In traffic jams
12:26And they lose
12:27That ability
12:28To do that
12:29And then finally
12:30The last one
12:31Is understand
12:32That if I see
12:32Somebody doing
12:33Something clearly
12:34Wrong
12:36That it's incumbent
12:37On me
12:37To feed that
12:39Back to them
12:39Obviously it has
12:40To be possible
12:41Like if I see
12:42Somebody run
12:43A red light
12:43I'm not going
12:44To race that
12:45Cut them down
12:46And say you
12:47Shouldn't have
12:47Done that
12:48But one of the
12:50Things that does
12:50Come to mind
12:51Is let's say
12:51I'm driving
12:52Down the road
12:52And my driver
12:54Takes out his phone
12:55And starts
12:57Texting or driving
12:57And that
12:59Is incumbent
13:01On me
13:01At my own
13:02Safety
13:03To try and
13:03Feed that back
13:04Immediately to them
13:05But those are
13:06The ten basic
13:07Principles that
13:08I came up with
13:08Nice
13:09I like those
13:10I like those
13:11And what
13:12I mean
13:14Who is this for
13:15Like who has
13:16Been the book
13:17Written to
13:19Address
13:19I mean
13:20I guess
13:21This is my guess
13:22But what did
13:23You want
13:24This for
13:26Okay
13:26And what I did
13:28Is I wrote it
13:29For three different
13:29Audiences
13:32One audience
13:33Is the parents
13:34Of teen drivers
13:36I was a teen
13:38Driver at one
13:39Point in my life
13:40I was a parent
13:42Of a teen driver
13:42And I know
13:43What I was
13:43Curious about
13:44And wanted to
13:46You know
13:46Make sure that
13:47I was getting
13:48To my children
13:48Right
13:49And then
13:50The third
13:51Group of people
13:52Is all other
13:52Drivers
13:53I had a guy
13:54Tell me one time
13:55That he'd driven
13:56For 60 years
13:57Never had a crash
13:58He says I'm like
13:59One of the safest
14:00Drivers on the road
14:01And I thought to
14:02Myself you're just
14:03One crash away
14:04Or one bad
14:05Decision away
14:05From being in
14:07A terrible crash
14:08Or maybe hurting
14:09Somebody
14:09Yeah
14:11The National
14:12Highway Transportation
14:13And Safety
14:14Administration
14:16Makes
14:16We're coming up
14:18To a
14:19Section
14:19Of the year
14:20That they call
14:21100 deadliest days
14:23For teenagers
14:23And it's basically
14:26Designated as being
14:27The time between
14:28Memorial Day
14:28And Labor Day
14:30And that's about
14:31100 days long
14:32Three months
14:32And what it does
14:35Is it points out
14:35The fact that
14:36During that
14:37Three month period
14:38Of a year
14:39There's 30%
14:41Higher probability
14:42That fatal crashes
14:43Are going to happen
14:44With teenagers
14:45That's a really
14:46High number
14:47When you think about it
14:47Oh yeah
14:48And part of the
14:49Reason for that
14:50Is
14:51Distractions
14:53Distractions
14:53By maybe
14:54Within the same
14:55Car
14:55Or talking
14:57On a cell phone
14:58Or whatever
14:59Increases the probability
15:00That they're going to be
15:01In a crash
15:02By 60%
15:04Not having seatbelts
15:06Buckled
15:06Which is
15:07You know
15:07Something that
15:08Today
15:09There's no excuse for
15:10I mean
15:10You got all kinds
15:11Of reminders
15:12And everything
15:12But people still
15:13Drive around
15:14Without seatbelts
15:14Oh yeah
15:15And it increases it
15:16For teenagers
15:17By about 50%
15:18And then speeding
15:20Oh yeah
15:21Increases their
15:22Probability
15:23By 30%
15:24And when you put
15:25More than three teens
15:27In a car
15:28The increased probability
15:29Is 158%
15:31Higher probability
15:32There's going to be
15:33A fatal crash
15:33Oh man
15:35Those are disgusting
15:36Numbers aren't they
15:37Oh yeah
15:40Oh my gosh
15:42Yeah I know
15:43But it all
15:45You know
15:45And this is one thing
15:46I think is really
15:46Important for parents
15:47To understand
15:48That they need
15:49To have that in mind
15:50When they go into
15:51The summertime
15:52And it's not just
15:53A good time
15:54Where they don't have
15:54To get up in the morning
15:56You know
15:58They got to
15:58They got to
15:59Educate their children
16:00Oh yeah
16:01And having this book
16:02Would educate them
16:03Oh definitely
16:04I see that you have
16:05A trailer
16:06For your book
16:07We're going to go ahead
16:08And play that
16:09I know we said
16:09Earlier
16:10But I figured
16:11Out a way to play it
16:12So we're going to
16:12Go ahead and play that
16:13And then we will
16:15Be right back guys
16:15Watch this trailer
16:17This could save
16:17Your child's life
16:18And yours
16:24Every day
16:25There are many people
16:26Who drive on the streets
16:27To go to their
16:28Respective jobs
16:29But how many
16:30Were able to return
16:31To their home safely
16:33Many individuals
16:34Are overly concerned
16:35With getting to
16:36Their destinations
16:38Overlooking the importance
16:39Of making travel safe
16:40And practiced
16:42How's my driving
16:43Why every other driver
16:45Doesn't seem to have a clue
16:47One of the best self-help books
16:49Is about encouraging the readers
16:51To learn more about
16:52Defensive awareness
16:53By Steve Jadick
16:55It consists of the author's advice
16:57Tips
16:58And lessons about defensive driving
17:04I wrote the book
17:05How's my driving
17:06Why every other driver
17:07Doesn't seem to have a clue
17:09To encourage an increase
17:10In the level of defensive
17:11Driving awareness
17:12Among the audience
17:14Doing this should help
17:16The driver become
17:16Much more alert
17:17To traffic conditions
17:18Around them
17:19As they operate
17:20Their vehicles
17:21The increased number
17:23Of teenage fatalities
17:24In car accidents
17:25Urged me to write this book
17:28It breaks my heart
17:30To know the feelings
17:31Of the families
17:31Of those who weren't able
17:33To go home
17:33Due to the accident
17:38Steve mentioned that
17:39For the first three months
17:41You start to drive a car
17:42Don't drive with your peers
17:44Or with somebody else
17:45As it will distract you
17:47Which may lead
17:48To a horrible accident
17:50He also stated
17:52That over 60,000 individuals
17:54Died because of vehicle accidents
17:56Citing 10-year-old research
18:02Among the goals
18:03Of self-help books
18:04Is to allow the reader
18:06To gain lessons
18:06That will help them
18:07Develop themselves
18:09The most basic goal
18:11Of this non-fiction book
18:12Is to remind people
18:13That they already know
18:14About driving safely
18:16But may have just
18:17Temporarily forgotten
18:18Or haven't practiced
18:19For a long time
18:35Wow
18:36Wow
18:37Wow
18:38You know
18:39Goodness gracious
18:41So
18:42What is a defense
18:43Driving recipe?
18:44What is that?
18:46That's a driving recipe
18:48It's a
18:49The five-step approach
18:52To
18:54Driving with
18:55The highest possible level
18:57Of awareness
18:57In your
18:59In your driving
19:01Regiment
19:04The defensive driving recipe
19:06Has six parts
19:08To it all together
19:09And five of them
19:11Are
19:13Very active
19:14And they're things
19:16That you do
19:16And the thing
19:17That the sixth one
19:18Makes your
19:21Your defensive driving
19:23Regiment
19:24Happen on a continuous basis
19:25To the best possible ability
19:28The first one
19:29It stands for
19:30S-I-T-D-E-R
19:33And
19:34S stands for search
19:35So when you're driving along
19:39And you're
19:40And this works by the way
19:40When you're walking around your house
19:42If you've ever run into
19:43A coffee table
19:45With my toes
19:48So search
19:49Search
19:49And get an idea
19:51Of what your surroundings are
19:52Once you've done that
19:53Then you
19:54You identify
19:55In the picture
19:56That you just made
19:57In your brain
19:58Identify those things
19:59That could be a problem
20:00To you
20:00Or you to them
20:03Then the
20:04Hardest one
20:05Of the whole bunch
20:06And this is especially
20:07Difficult for teenagers
20:08Is you predict
20:09Based on what you see
20:10What you think
20:11These things are going to do
20:12For instance
20:13If I see a bicyclist
20:14On the road
20:15What do I do
20:17To
20:18To deal with that bicycle
20:19So I have to predict
20:19What they're going to do
20:20If they're riding along
20:21The sidewalk
20:22Then I have to make sure
20:23I'm convinced that
20:24They're going to continue
20:26To do that
20:26Or if they're going to
20:27Cut out in front of me
20:27I have to be ready for it
20:28Because the next thing
20:29I'm going to do
20:30Is I'm going to decide
20:31What I'm going to do
20:32To keep them safe
20:33And me safe
20:34Right
20:35And then
20:35When I
20:38Once I've done that
20:39Then I'm going to
20:40Execute
20:41The plan
20:41That I came up with
20:42And then the last thing
20:44That I do
20:44Is I'm going to
20:44Repeat the process
20:45And you'll notice
20:46That at no point
20:47In there
20:48Does it mention
20:49Use of cell phones
20:50Or eating
20:50Or any of those
20:52Those actions
20:56That
20:58So it's
20:59Search identify
20:59Predict, decide, execute, repeat
21:01Search identify
21:01Predict, decide, execute, repeat
21:03Yeah
21:04Wow
21:05Wow
21:06Does that make sense?
21:07It does
21:07It does
21:08And I wish
21:10It's simple
21:11I mean
21:12Super simple
21:12I hope that
21:13You know
21:14People consider getting the book
21:16Because
21:16You know
21:17It does
21:18Come up with a lot of
21:20Points
21:20That we need to
21:22Adhere to
21:23And really repeat
21:24Even ourselves
21:25Even
21:26Not even just
21:27Teenagers
21:28But people
21:29Like
21:29You know
21:30You've driven in Florida
21:31Come on
21:34It's not just Florida
21:35Oh gosh
21:36It's not just Florida
21:37I know
21:38It's Jersey too
21:38It's New York
21:39New York is bad
21:40I'd rather be
21:42On public transportation
21:42Than in my own car
21:44In New York
21:45But
21:46You know
21:47How should the reader
21:48Consider the use
21:49Of safety devices
21:50On the average car
21:53Well
21:54There's
21:55Several safety devices
21:56That exist
21:58On cars
22:00And
22:00The first
22:01And most important one
22:02In my opinion
22:04Is turn signals
22:07Even though
22:07They wouldn't be
22:08Necessarily classified
22:09As a safety device
22:12How do you
22:13Let's say that you're
22:14In another car
22:15And I'm driving along
22:17And I'm getting ready
22:18To do a turn
22:19But I don't use
22:20My turn signal
22:20How am I supposed
22:22To know that
22:22As the other car driver
22:23So
22:24So the turn signals
22:26Are very important
22:27To alert people
22:28That I'm going
22:29To deviate
22:30From my course
22:31Of action
22:33At that point
22:35Anti-lock brakes
22:36Are something
22:38That are
22:38They come pretty standard
22:39On cars
22:40Now that didn't always
22:40But they're there
22:42To keep you from
22:43Having an uncontrollable skid
22:46Because it doesn't let you
22:47Lock your wheels up
22:48And melt rubber
22:49Off the bottom
22:50Of the tire
22:54They also help out
22:56In bad weather conditions
22:58For instance
22:58If the road is wet
22:59And if there's
23:00Or there's sand
23:01On the road
23:02Which is something
23:03You might not even see
23:06The airbags
23:07Another thing
23:08That is a safety device
23:10On the car
23:11And it's not something
23:13That you're going to
23:13Have to initiate it
23:14Because it'll initiate
23:16By itself
23:17But people don't understand
23:18Just how quickly
23:20Airbags go off
23:21They literally go
23:24From inside your steering wheel
23:26To fully inflated
23:28And starting to deflate
23:29In less than
23:30One one hundredth of a second
23:31Oof
23:33It's mind-numbing
23:34How fast that is
23:36But it has to be that way
23:37Because if you have
23:38A head-on collision
23:39The front of the car
23:40Is starting to stop
23:41During that time
23:43That airbag has to
23:44Experience
23:45An initiation signal
23:46And then it has to
23:48Fire
23:48A device in there
23:52That produces
23:52Nitrogen gas
23:53At high pressure
23:55And then it explodes
23:56That airbag out
23:58In front of you
23:59And the airbag
24:00Has to be
24:01Deflating
24:02By the time
24:03You get to it
24:04Now
24:05If you think about that
24:08Because if it didn't
24:09It wasn't deflating
24:10By the time you got to it
24:11You may as well
24:12Hit your dashboard
24:12Yeah
24:13It would be that hard
24:15So they're there
24:17And one of the things
24:18About airbags
24:19Obviously that you really
24:20Have to be concerned
24:20About is passengers
24:22You know
24:23People should be
24:24Appropriately positioned
24:25In cars
24:25So that they
24:26Like children
24:27For instance
24:28Yeah
24:28They can fall
24:29If the airbags
24:30Will ever go off
24:31In one one hundredth
24:33Of a second
24:33You're not going to do anything
24:34No
24:35You can't put your arm out
24:37To try and stop them
24:38Nope
24:39Not at all
24:41Another thing
24:41That I consider
24:42To be safety devices
24:43On car
24:43Which most people
24:45Wouldn't consider
24:45Is your warning lights
24:48This just
24:49This guy
24:50Just had a phone call
24:51From my
24:52My granddaughter
24:54Literally
24:54Less than two hours ago
24:56And
24:57She had her oil
24:58Changed
24:59In her car
24:59And
25:01All of a sudden
25:02Her engine
25:03Blew up
25:04And
25:05I said
25:05What happened
25:06She says
25:07I don't know
25:07But I maybe
25:08Didn't get it changed
25:09As frequently
25:10As I should have
25:10I said
25:11Did you happen
25:12To notice
25:13Any lights
25:14Come on
25:14In your dashboard
25:15When that
25:15When that happened
25:16And she said
25:17No I didn't
25:18I said
25:18Well
25:18There probably
25:19Was a light
25:20That would have
25:20Warned you of that
25:22Also
25:22Audio signals
25:24If you don't
25:25Have your seatbelt
25:26Buckle
25:26It'll beep at you
25:29So
25:30Those are all
25:31Safety devices
25:32On a car
25:32That
25:32You can
25:33You can use
25:34To
25:36Drive more safely
25:37Yeah definitely
25:39And you know
25:40You have these
25:41Automated cars now
25:42That won't even
25:43Like take off
25:44Unless you have
25:45Your seatbelt on
25:47That's true
25:48They won't even
25:48Go anywhere
25:50Yep
25:50And that's
25:51You know
25:51Honestly
25:52That's the way
25:52It should be
25:53Yeah
25:54Yeah definitely
25:55You know
25:55There's one thing
25:56That I want to say
25:57And I have
25:58Time for one more
25:59Question
25:59You know
26:00How far
26:02Should someone
26:03Kind of
26:05Drive
26:05Or maintain
26:07Their distance
26:08Between the car
26:08In front of them
26:09And them
26:09Because that is
26:10A big thing
26:11I do not like
26:12When people
26:13Tailgate my car
26:14Or they're
26:15Right on top
26:16Of me
26:16Because if I stop
26:17That's it
26:18They're going to be
26:19In my trunk
26:19They're going to be
26:20In the back seat
26:21Of my car
26:21Somewhere
26:22And we're going
26:23To have an accident
26:24I just know it
26:24I just
26:25So usually
26:25What I do
26:26Is when people
26:26Do that
26:27I pull off
26:28To the side
26:29Of the road
26:29And I say
26:29Go ahead
26:30Just go
26:30Just
26:31Yep
26:31No
26:32Because I can't
26:34Perfect
26:35Well that's perfect
26:35That's the way
26:36It should be
26:37You know
26:38How far
26:39Should you be
26:39Behind somebody
26:40Well
26:41That's
26:41The only thing
26:42You don't have
26:43Any control
26:43Over what the
26:44Person behind you
26:45Is doing
26:45Right
26:46Unless you want
26:47To consider
26:47The fact that
26:48You're going to
26:48Pull over
26:48And let them
26:49Go by
26:49But
26:50What you do
26:51Have
26:51Is you do
26:51Have
26:52The distance
26:53Between
26:53The front
26:53Of your car
26:54And the rear
26:55Of the car
26:56In front of you
26:56And that's
26:57A distance
26:57That should be
26:59Approximately
27:00Two to three
27:01Seconds
27:02Now
27:03That's a distance
27:04In seconds
27:06So how do
27:06You set it up
27:08Here's the deal
27:08Let's say
27:09You're driving
27:09Down the road
27:10And you've
27:10Got a car
27:11In front of you
27:11And there's
27:12Some distance
27:13Down the road
27:13And you want
27:14To know
27:14How far
27:15In time
27:15Am I
27:16Behind him
27:16Because the
27:17Average human
27:18Reaction time
27:19Is about
27:19Two seconds
27:20So I need
27:21To be at least
27:22Two seconds
27:22Or so
27:23Behind cars
27:25When conditions
27:26Are normal
27:27So what I do
27:27Is I set up
27:28A condition
27:29Where the car
27:30In front of me
27:30Doesn't seem
27:31To be pulling
27:31Away from me
27:32Or I don't
27:33Be getting
27:33I'm not getting
27:34Closer to it
27:34So therefore
27:35I must be
27:35Doing the same
27:36Speed
27:36And then what I do
27:38Is once I've
27:39Got that condition
27:40Set up
27:41And I look
27:41At something
27:42On the road
27:43Typically one
27:43Of the dash
27:44Lines
27:44And I'll
27:45Pick
27:46When their wheels
27:48When their rear wheels
27:48Go past a certain
27:49Dash line
27:50I'll start
27:51Counting
27:51In seconds
27:521,001
27:531,002
27:551,003
27:56Before I go
27:57Over the same
27:58Line that they
27:59Went past
28:00And that gives me
28:02Two to three
28:03Seconds of time
28:04To react to
28:05Something happening
28:07Does that
28:08Does that answer
28:09Your question
28:09It does
28:10Because I
28:11I truly
28:11I stay back
28:12I think I do
28:14The one car
28:15Link
28:15The two car
28:16Links back
28:18Because to me
28:20That's a lot
28:21A lot
28:21Well probably
28:22More than one
28:23Car length
28:23It depends
28:24But I try
28:26Not to be
28:27Like so close
28:29To the person
28:30In front of me
28:30And I like
28:31Distance
28:32So that I have
28:33That reaction
28:34Time
28:34So is that
28:36Standard
28:37Like say
28:37Two car lengths
28:38Okay can I ask
28:40You what kind
28:41Of a car
28:41You'd use
28:42For those car lengths
28:42A big one
28:44A long car
28:47Cadillac
28:47But you can't
28:49You know
28:49In all honesty
28:50You can't count
28:50In car lengths
28:51But what you can do
28:53Is you can count
28:54In the time it takes you
28:55To get from one point
28:56To the next
28:57And if you're
28:58Giving yourself
28:59Enough space
29:00To be able to say
29:01I've got at least
29:02Two to three seconds
29:03Under normal driving conditions
29:05If it's raining out
29:06I'm going to double that distance
29:07Oh yeah
29:07You know what
29:09That's going to get me
29:10To my destination
29:10Two seconds later
29:11If I've got a boss
29:13That holds me accountable
29:14For that
29:14I'm going to change jobs
29:16Yeah
29:16You know
29:18I don't know
29:19If I
29:19I don't know
29:20If I
29:21This is one of the questions
29:22That you're going to ask
29:23Or not
29:23But one of the things
29:24That
29:25That
29:27Caused me to write
29:28This book as well
29:29Was the fact
29:30That I've been involved
29:31In two
29:32Nearly life ending
29:33Car crashes
29:33In my life
29:34Oh wow
29:35Yeah
29:36One of them
29:37Happened with me
29:38And my wife
29:39And she was
29:39Seven months pregnant
29:42And the car crash
29:44That occurred
29:45Was considered
29:46Not to be my fault
29:47But because I hit
29:49From the rear
29:49You could say
29:50Well I should have seen it
29:51And the problem is
29:52Is I just didn't expect it
29:53We were on
29:54On an interstate
29:55At one o'clock
29:57In the morning
29:58And I was familiar
30:00With the roadway
30:02And I had been
30:03On this particular
30:04Section road
30:05And I knew
30:05The distance
30:06That I was just
30:07About to travel down
30:08Was about two miles
30:09And I saw a set
30:10Of red lights
30:11Go around the corner
30:12About two miles
30:12Down the road
30:13So I think
30:13What I did
30:14I think what I did
30:16Is I said
30:17There's no cars
30:17Between me and them
30:18So I probably
30:20Just started
30:20Driving a little
30:21Maybe not as
30:23On top of my game
30:24As I should have
30:25And
30:27What happened was
30:28There was a car
30:29Parked in the middle
30:30Of the interstate
30:30With a black car
30:31With no lights on
30:32And I drove right
30:33Into it
30:35My wife was
30:36Seven months pregnant
30:36She lost a child
30:39Oh I'm so sorry
30:41Yeah
30:41And
30:43She
30:43She
30:44She suffered
30:45Well unfortunately
30:46She just passed away
30:47About five months ago
30:48But
30:49She
30:50She suffered
30:51From grief
30:52From the loss
30:53Of that child
30:54Because she never
30:54Got a chance
30:55To meet it
30:56And
30:56And about
30:57Nine years later
30:58I was going to work
31:00Late at night
31:01We're carpooling
31:02Around this
31:0340 mile an hour
31:04Road
31:05And
31:07Driving along
31:07And there was
31:08There was three guys
31:08In the car
31:09Me driving
31:10Guy in the passenger seat
31:11And the guy in the back
31:12Sleep
31:12And he was
31:14He was kind of
31:15Nozing off back there
31:16But I was talking
31:17With a friend of mine
31:18And he asked me a question
31:20And I
31:21I said
31:25In any case
31:26I said
31:27I answered a question
31:28And I looked at him
31:29When I did
31:29Next thing I did
31:30Next thing I did
31:31Is I woke up
31:31Face down
31:32In the middle
31:32Of the intersection
31:33And
31:34It was a head-on collision
31:36You don't
31:37Walk away from
31:38Them things
31:38Very easily
31:39No
31:41I
31:41But
31:42You know
31:43Fortunately
31:43Both of those
31:45Crashes
31:45Gave me something
31:46To talk to students
31:47About
31:48That helped them
31:49Understand
31:50I had a driving
31:51School that I
31:52Owned for about
31:5311 years
31:53And I used to
31:54Relate both of
31:55Those crashes
31:56To them
31:56And said
31:57Look I didn't
31:58Think it would
31:58Ever happen to me
31:59But it did
32:00So don't think
32:01It won't happen to you
32:03And
32:04That's
32:04That's the whole
32:05Purpose of writing
32:05This book
32:06Is to avoid
32:08One car crash
32:10As opposed to
32:11You know
32:12Driving free
32:13Safely for the rest
32:14Of your life
32:15Yeah definitely
32:16I have one question
32:18Okay
32:18Did you guys have
32:19Children after that
32:20Yes we did
32:21Okay
32:21We had
32:22We had a daughter
32:23At the time
32:23And then
32:24We lost the one
32:25And then about
32:26Two years later
32:26We had a son
32:27Okay
32:28So
32:30I know
32:30It's still heartache
32:31I know
32:32I get it
32:33But at least
32:34You had some children
32:35You know what I mean
32:37Wow
32:38Wow Steve
32:39Wow
32:41That's crazy
32:41But I
32:42You know
32:43I'm glad you're here
32:45To tell the story
32:46I mean twice
32:48Wow
32:48Yeah I know
32:49You think I would have
32:50Got it right
32:50The first time
32:51Well not necessarily
32:52I mean you know
32:53I know
32:54I know
32:56Think of it
32:56That's what I always say
32:57That success
32:58Leads you to failure
33:00If you only acknowledge
33:01Your successes
33:02Yeah
33:03And in that case
33:05Those are two failures
33:07Unfortunately
33:08It didn't cost me
33:08Or my wife
33:09Our lives
33:10She wasn't with me
33:11On the second one
33:13Wow
33:13Well Steve
33:14I want to thank you
33:15So much for being on the show
33:16And for writing this book
33:17And for
33:18Still
33:19Oh my gosh
33:20Still being here
33:21Still being here
33:22The name of the book
33:23Is How's My Driving
33:24I'm going to put the link
33:26In the description
33:26So it'll be easy
33:27For you to find that
33:28As well as the website
33:30So we're going to go ahead
33:32And actually put the website
33:33There as well
33:34And I want to go ahead
33:35And show it to you
33:36And put the link
33:37In the description
33:38For the website
33:39So you can check that out
33:40As well
33:41And please share
33:42I mean this
33:43You just never know
33:44This might save
33:45Someone's life here
33:46And I mean
33:48Come on
33:48Steve is still here
33:50To tell the story
33:50So he's got to be here
33:51To save somebody
33:52So I'm just saying
33:54Exactly
33:54It didn't
33:55It was
33:56You know
33:56Never for the grace of God
33:58Go I
33:58That's right
33:59That's right
34:00Because you could have been
34:00Face down
34:01And ran over
34:03Multiple times
34:04But you weren't
34:05And so wow
34:07That's an amazing miracle
34:08Right there
34:08Steve thank you so much
34:10For being on the show
34:11And thank you guys
34:11So much for tuning in
34:12Remember
34:13To check this book out
34:15Don't forget
34:15To dare to be different
34:16And most of all
34:17Just stay safe
34:18And don't be tailgating
34:20Okay
34:20I don't like it
34:21And I don't think
34:21Anybody else likes it
34:22You know
34:23Don't ride on people's tail
34:24Be careful
34:25And teach your kids
34:26To drive good
34:28And read this book
34:31All right guys
34:32No problem
34:33And until next time guys
34:34Bye
34:46Bye
34:47Bye
34:47B
34:48Bye
34:48Bye
34:48Bye
34:48Bye
