00:17You already had my mom a celebration of your emergency.
00:21LC 4-tier.
00:23Somebody exactly what happened?
00:25Well, there was two teenagers and they was talking to the guy,
00:29like in the truck, and then one of them tried to pull out a gun.
00:32Then the guards started shooting between them,
00:35and one of them got shot, which is the man that was right here with us.
00:38Okay, an officer will be discharged as soon as possible.
00:49We need everybody to...
00:51Hey, were you out of here?
00:52Yeah.
00:53Talk to him. Are you guys all at the store?
00:55Just stay inside the store for right now?
00:57The order.
00:58Did that not be an adult male?
01:00They shot?
01:01No problem.
01:02Is this what happened at right here?
01:04When you land it?
01:04I don't know.
01:05But all the shell casings are over here.
01:08He saw all of them now, so it's two teenagers.
01:10They're walking through.
01:12The guy who got shot, they had words.
01:15So he starts shooting at them.
01:17The victim?
01:17Yeah.
01:18And they start shooting back.
01:24One will come out.
01:41I'm one being told from the people already on scene.
01:43The shooting happened about an hour ago.
01:46So the victim was shot, from what I understand,
01:49once in the chest, and he passed away at the hospital.
01:55So we're just going to see what we have from there
01:57once we get out there.
02:02Hey, Matt.
02:03Hey, are you still at the hospital?
02:06No.
02:07OK, so the victim had, like, clothes and a phone on them?
02:12Clothes, he had a wallet, he had a black Samsung phone.
02:16Is there any, like, family or anything at the hospital?
02:19There was nobody at the hospital.
02:20Nobody?
02:22Detective Hill informs me that he hasn't been able to get in contact
02:27with the victim's family members.
02:29Evidently, there is no family members or friends
02:31at the hospital checking on him.
02:34All right, thanks, dude.
02:35No problem, buddy.
02:36All right, bye.
02:39This crime scene is in an area of town that's very diverse.
02:43It's rich in Hispanic and Vietnamese culture.
02:47They have their own businesses.
02:49It's on the edges of New Orleans, really.
02:52Everything past this area is, like, swampland.
02:54It's a very tight-knit community where they all seem to know each other
02:58and try to help each other out.
03:02When I arrive on the crime scene,
03:04there are certain things I'm looking for right away.
03:07Shell casings, blood on the scene,
03:12video surveillance cameras.
03:14In this particular case,
03:16there's businesses that have video surveillance cameras
03:19pointing towards the parking lot where all this happened.
03:22So this video, these cameras is what caught it, I'm assuming?
03:27Um, that video right there.
03:29That you catch it.
03:30All right.
03:36So, from what I'm told,
03:38the criminal witnesses,
03:39they speak Spanish.
03:40These guys over here?
03:41Yes.
03:42They were out here selling food.
03:44Okay.
03:45And two guys start circling them.
03:47They think that they're possibly going to rob them for their food
03:51based on their behavior,
03:52and then the shootout happened.
03:55Okay.
03:56The victim is allegedly part of the people who are here
03:59selling the food,
04:00and then the other two males who were involved in the shooting
04:03went possibly that way after the shooting.
04:06So I'm still trying to get details, like, who started.
04:11Okay.
04:11And why and why.
04:13Did someone walk me through the scene real quick?
04:15Just so I didn't get up.
04:16I wasn't here because they picked up everything.
04:18All right.
04:21Maurice, come walk me through, please.
04:23Hey, man.
04:24Hey.
04:25Just, you need to tell.
04:27Like, tell me what happened.
04:29What's going on?
04:30Okay, so,
04:32there was, um,
04:33the deceit over there.
04:35Mm-hmm.
04:37And we had some juveniles over here.
04:40It's like the deceit and pulls his gun out.
04:42He shoots in the air,
04:44and he continues to shoot.
04:45They shoot at him.
04:46Wait, wait.
04:47The deceitant?
04:48Yeah, the deceitant.
04:49The deceitant was shooting or pointing a gun first?
04:51Yeah.
04:52So the deceitant apparently just sent the deceit and shot first.
04:55Mm-hmm.
04:55There's a revolver.
04:55Detective Maurice Stewart tells me that
04:58after speaking with the officers on scene
05:00and some witnesses,
05:01the deceased victim was in some kind of shootout
05:05with these teenagers
05:06who evidently shot back at him
05:09and struck him,
05:11which led to his death.
05:14My victim, his name is David Cano,
05:16and he's 46 years old.
05:19He's a citizen from Honduras,
05:22and he's here just trying to make money
05:24for his family to send it back home
05:26to help support the people he loves.
05:29So I picked up four shell cases
05:31from in between those two vehicles right here.
05:35So it looked like they were possibly standing over there.
05:38The deceitant was standing over here.
05:40That a polyloader that we picked up,
05:42and that's it, no casing.
05:44There's a revolver that's unaccounted for.
05:46And we think the deceitant had a revolver?
05:48Yes.
05:49And that's because there's no shell casings, or...?
05:52Yes, he's actually not a barrel revolver.
05:54Okay.
05:56So at this point, I'm trying to figure out
05:58why he had a shootout with these teenagers
06:00and who's the aggressor in the situation.
06:03So I need to start talking to witnesses
06:05who are actually there
06:07to help me figure all this out.
06:10All right, Miles.
06:11You want to try to talk to him?
06:12Yeah.
06:13Is this person, someone's transporting them, or what?
06:16He's in his car.
06:17So I mean, you want him to transport,
06:18or you want him to drive?
06:19Well, I don't want him to be a ghost on us.
06:23Hello.
06:23My name's Detective Riffle.
06:25We're going to talk to you at the station.
06:27Just hang tight for us, and we'll let you know.
06:29A witness that supposedly
06:32saw everything happen or unfold,
06:34who was waiting in their car,
06:36but didn't want to talk out there.
06:39So I'm going to interview them at the station.
06:42Okay.
06:45All right.
06:46Let's talk with some of these other people real quick.
06:49Hey, I'm Detective Riffle
06:51at the New Orleans Police Department.
06:52You saw it happen out here?
06:53Yes, sir.
06:54Can you tell me?
06:56So two teenagers came.
06:58So I said something.
06:59And I kind of heard, but I turned around.
07:01He noticed I saw him.
07:03The other one was like,
07:04no, we can't just go.
07:05And I saw the other one had a weapon.
07:08So he went.
07:08Mm-hmm.
07:09They didn't come back.
07:11He was walking while he was shooting.
07:13This is the other guy that got shot?
07:15Yeah.
07:16The first time he shot was up,
07:18trying to scare the two teenagers.
07:19Okay.
07:20When he shot out once,
07:21these two were running.
07:22They didn't shoot.
07:23Why was he trying to scare them, do you think?
07:25Supposedly they felt threatened.
07:27The people out here felt threatened?
07:29Yeah.
07:30How did the dude that got shot
07:31know that they felt threatened?
07:34I don't know.
07:35All right.
07:38There's a lot of people in the parking lot
07:39to speak with.
07:41I need to get down into the details
07:44about what actually happened.
07:46Hey, Detective Riffle.
07:48Nice to meet you.
07:49Sorry, I'm sorry.
07:50I'm complaining, too.
07:51Yeah.
07:58So he said that they ordered food,
08:01they started eating the food
08:02when he heard the gunshots.
08:04Yeah, right.
08:04And when he heard the gunshots,
08:05they went that way.
08:06We were.
08:06Okay.
08:08I am very lucky to have Miles
08:09as a partner during this investigation.
08:12Miles speaks Spanish
08:14as his first language,
08:15so it was great to have him there
08:17to help me translate.
08:19It would have taken a lot longer
08:21to figure things out
08:22if Miles wouldn't have been there.
08:24You know which one?
08:35Okay.
08:36Okay, muchas gracias.
08:39Hello.
08:40Do you all speak in English at all?
08:42No.
08:43So can you ask them,
08:44did you all see what happened out here?
08:48They were seated right there.
08:55Mm-hmm.
08:55And they saw two African-American males
08:58just kind of walking around.
09:00They noticed that they each had a firearm.
09:03And they asked them
09:04what kind of food they had.
09:06Mm-hmm.
09:06And they felt like
09:07they were going to rob them, essentially.
09:11They told everybody around them,
09:12including the guy who was killed.
09:15Like, are they trying to rob us or something?
09:17The guy who got shot
09:18told them, like,
09:19hey, y'all, leave them alone.
09:21So two African-American males
09:23came to the side over here.
09:25Okay.
09:25And that's when they heard the gunshots.
09:27You can ask them
09:27who started shooting first.
09:32The African-American males.
09:34Okay.
09:36So I have two very different versions of events.
09:40One witness said the victim, David Cano,
09:43fired that first warning shot.
09:45And the other witness said
09:47these two teenagers fired first.
09:50I really need to find out
09:51who these teenagers are
09:52and get their side of the story.
09:54But I'm also trying to figure out,
09:56is this a murder case
09:57or is this a case of self-defense?
10:00No one is saying
10:01these teenagers were robbing us.
10:03It was more of
10:04they felt like they might get robbed.
10:07All right.
10:07I'll meet you there.
10:08All right.
10:08I'm hoping that video surveillance
10:11will actually show the incident
10:13so I don't have to rely
10:14strictly on witnesses.
10:17Supposedly the victim was
10:18so we're going to go knock on the door.
10:21There might be some family
10:22that we can find there.
10:24And hopefully the witness
10:27going to the 7th District Station
10:28tells us exactly what happened.
11:02Hello, how are you?
11:04Disculpa.
11:05Nosotros estamos oficiales
11:06con el departamento de Nueva Leans.
11:07Sí.
11:09He's aware of what happened?
11:10Yeah.
11:10Okay.
11:11Somebody called him.
11:13Okay.
11:15Okay.
11:20He knows them for 12 years.
11:22Okay.
11:23Was he a roommate?
11:24Yes.
11:24For 12 years.
11:25¿Usted tiene ese teléfono para llamarlas?
11:27No tiene familia.
11:28¿El de Honduras?
11:30Él es de Honduras.
11:32Okay.
11:33Gracias.
11:33Okay.
11:33Gracias.
11:34Okay, gracias.
11:37All right.
11:37Are you going to the 7th District Station?
11:38Yeah.
11:42It seems like the victim
11:44has no family members here.
11:50Whatever family the victim does have
11:52lives in Honduras.
11:53I'm going to continue to try
11:56to track down David's family members.
11:59We always try to reach out
12:01to the next of kin
12:02as soon as possible
12:03just to let them know what happened.
12:07Now, Miles and I are going
12:09to the 7th District Station
12:10to interview a witness
12:12who supposedly saw everything.
12:14and hopefully he gives us
12:16a detailed account
12:17of what he saw.
12:29Hello.
12:30Detective Riffle.
12:32I'm Detective Berreri.
12:35So, just tell us
12:36what happened out there.
12:37What happened out there?
12:38So,
12:39I saw a teenage.
12:43They came up to her.
12:44And they asked her
12:45what she was selling.
12:46And I actually noticed
12:48the one in the room
12:49was holding something.
12:51Like,
12:51the waistband?
12:53The thigh line?
12:53Yeah.
12:55The one with the yellow hoodie said,
12:57no, I was here.
12:58So, they just left.
13:01And I saw them.
13:02They came back.
13:03So, the guy that got shot,
13:06he's always there.
13:07Most of the time, Drake.
13:09He was carrying a weapon.
13:10I was reading it to him.
13:13So, the first time he shot
13:14it was up in the sky
13:15trying to scare them off.
13:17Because the guy was still
13:18not letting go of his tracks.
13:20The two teenagers ran.
13:22But the other guy
13:23is still shooting at him.
13:24So, if he still shot up
13:25in the sky,
13:26we'll shot him straight.
13:27I was looking at the teenage.
13:29That's why he's definitely hurt.
13:30Yeah.
13:32And when they got behind
13:33the red car that's all damaged,
13:35that's when he started shooting.
13:36Okay.
13:37Do you think you were
13:38trying to rob y'all?
13:39What's the hell?
13:39What's the life?
13:41The witness let us know
13:43that basically the teenagers
13:45were loitering in the area
13:46and kind of making everyone
13:48feel uncomfortable.
13:49He could see the firearm
13:50in their waistband.
13:51And they thought
13:52that there was a possibility
13:53that the teenagers
13:54were trying to rob them.
13:56David Cano shot around
13:58into the air
13:58to scare the teenagers away.
14:00And the teenagers
14:01started to run away.
14:02And then David Cano
14:04fired another round.
14:06Then the teenagers
14:07who were running away
14:08started to return fire.
14:10So, why do you believe
14:12the guy shot in the air?
14:14He's always done for us.
14:16We have experiences
14:17like this before,
14:18like four more times
14:19that we got to rob.
14:21Have you seen them before?
14:22Those two kids?
14:23No.
14:24Did you see where they went?
14:25I think it was more.
14:27More way to go.
14:28More way to go.
14:29They ran that way.
14:31Yeah.
14:32David Cano
14:33might have been
14:34the aggressor
14:34in this situation
14:36or maybe escalated
14:37a little too far.
14:38It just shifts my focus
14:40a little bit
14:40about what actually happened.
14:43So, if they went back
14:44the way you said they went,
14:47there's cameras over there.
14:48They should have
14:49been able to see that.
14:50These cameras
14:51is what caught it,
14:52I'm assuming?
14:52Um, that video right there.
14:54That should catch it.
14:57Now, I really just need
14:58to see the video.
15:00Hopefully,
15:00that will clear
15:01all this up for me.
15:03All right.
15:03I think that's it.
15:23So, we've got the video.
15:25All right.
15:27You all want to watch
15:27the video?
15:28Yeah.
15:30All right.
15:31Let's see.
15:34So, the good news is
15:35this camera system
15:36has sound
15:37so you can hear everything.
15:38So, this is from
15:39the store that was open
15:40last night.
15:41That was further down.
15:44This is where
15:44all the witnesses were
15:45and kind of where
15:46everything happens.
15:50we see the two teenagers,
15:52one in the red hoodie,
15:53one in the tan hoodie,
15:55and you see the victim,
15:57David,
16:00gets out of the driver's seat.
16:04And then a few minutes later,
16:07you can hear that first shot
16:11and then you see the two guys
16:14running away, basically,
16:16being scared off.
16:17And then you see
16:18the decedent follow them.
16:23And it looks like
16:24the decedent shoots
16:25in their direction
16:26and actually hits
16:26this car window.
16:29You saw that?
16:37And then the guy
16:38in the red shoots back.
16:43One of those strikes,
16:45David,
16:46it kind of grabs himself
16:48and then he walks over
16:49to the white truck
16:51and later
16:53falls down
16:54next to the white truck.
16:57The two teenagers
16:59who are being shot at
17:00run this way.
17:03So we're trying
17:03to get a better angle
17:05to just see what kind of,
17:07maybe where they went.
17:09Right.
17:10There's an RTCC camera
17:11down there,
17:11so we might go there
17:13and just see
17:13what video we can get.
17:15Obviously,
17:16we need to find them
17:16to get their statements
17:18and everything
17:19and see what
17:20they were thinking.
17:21All right.
17:22Yeah.
17:29Looking at the video,
17:30I mean,
17:30it's pretty clear
17:32the decedent
17:33did more than
17:34just shoot in the air.
17:35Like, you can clearly see
17:36he shoots at them
17:37and you see
17:37the glass break.
17:39They were actually
17:40retreating.
17:41Yeah.
17:42And the guy
17:43that shot back at him
17:44almost got hit.
17:45Yeah.
17:46Well,
17:47you have a unique case
17:48because in Louisiana,
17:50it's a stay-in-your-ground state,
17:52so when you're being
17:54fired upon,
17:55you can shoot back
17:56in self-defense.
17:58In Louisiana,
17:59we have a stay-in-your-ground law,
18:01which is basically
18:02you don't have
18:03the duty to retreat
18:05in a lethal force situation.
18:08I'm going to investigate
18:09this incident
18:10the same regardless
18:11if it's a self-defense case
18:12or if it's a homicide.
18:14Someone lost their life,
18:16so I'm going to get
18:18to the bottom of it.
18:20We're going to find out
18:21the truth.
18:33Unit 1723.
18:35I'm going to get you
18:36on the air.
18:36You have a question.
18:381723?
18:38Yeah.
18:40A 7th District detective
18:41is trying to raise
18:42a homicide detective,
18:43so that's usually like
18:44they'll probably have
18:45information or something
18:46possibly related to last night
18:48since it's in the 7th District,
18:49hopefully.
18:50Maybe a witness.
18:51Maybe one of the kids
18:52came forward.
19:19So this is
19:22who runs a store
19:23out there?
19:24Yes.
19:25He stated that
19:26right before the shooting,
19:28there were two subjects
19:30in his store.
19:31He has them on video.
19:33Okay.
19:34What is the address?
19:37Yeah, that's going to be
19:38one of those stores
19:39that was probably
19:39closed last night.
19:40Yeah.
19:42Okay.
19:43Okay.
19:43All right.
19:44Thanks.
19:44Bye.
19:47Tiani just called
19:48and the 7th District
19:49who was calling
19:50on the radio
19:51said
19:53called the 7th District
19:54station
19:54saying he has video,
19:56so we'll go over there
19:58and see what he's got
19:59because it might be
20:00the same guy's.
20:00That's perfect.
20:01So we'll see
20:01if they're in the store,
20:02you might see their faces.
20:03All right.
20:04That's good.
20:04All right.
20:04Let's go in here
20:05and get this video real quick.
20:07All right.
20:10If I can get good
20:11video surveillance
20:12of these teenagers' faces,
20:14one option I can do
20:16is send out
20:16a Be on the Lookout flyer
20:18to the department
20:19to say,
20:19hey, has anyone
20:20recognized these kids?
20:21Has anyone seen them before?
20:23But before that,
20:25I arrive at the
20:26Real Time Crime Center
20:27to check the cameras there.
20:30I get the video surveillance
20:32from the camera
20:33on the street
20:34that my witness said
20:37the teenagers ran back to
20:39after the homicide occurred.
20:43I see the two teenagers
20:46still wearing the same clothing
20:47right after the shooting
20:49and see them running away
20:50and turn the corner
20:52towards Peltier Drive.
20:55This is great.
20:56Now we know the direction
20:57where they went
20:58after the homicide.
21:01Can I give you all
21:02some video to download?
21:10So, after the shooting,
21:12the two suspects
21:13take a right
21:14on Peltier,
21:15which is the first street
21:16after the bridge.
21:17Yes.
21:18And if you keep going
21:19down that road,
21:20you hit a large
21:21apartment complex
21:22back there.
21:23So, the cameras
21:24for that apartment complex,
21:25they're really good.
21:26I've used them in the past.
21:28They, like, move
21:29and they follow motion.
21:30So, you might be able
21:31to find out
21:32if they do go back there,
21:34what actual apartment
21:36that they will stay in.
21:36The cameras are usually
21:37that good.
21:40Now, we're going to go
21:41back to the crime scene,
21:42meet with
21:44who supposedly has video
21:46of these guys
21:46in his store
21:47prior to the shooting happening.
21:49Okay.
21:50And meet Tiani.
21:51Right.
21:57So, the shooting
21:58happened down here?
21:59The deceased was about
22:01right where your car is,
22:02so, like, shooting that way
22:03when he got hit.
22:05All right.
22:06Y'all ready to go
22:06into the talk to ?
22:07Yeah.
22:12Hello.
22:13How you doing?
22:13I'm Detective Guerreri.
22:15Hello.
22:16You have, um,
22:17some video for us
22:18to look at?
22:18Yes.
22:19Okay.
22:19Do you mind
22:19if we take a look?
22:20Yeah.
22:20Okay.
22:21Can we go?
22:21Yeah.
22:21Okay, thank you.
22:24Okay.
22:25So, is this yesterday?
22:27Yeah.
22:27Okay.
22:31Looking at
22:32the grocery store cameras,
22:34it was an older system,
22:36so the video was kind of grainy.
22:37It wasn't, like, super clear,
22:39but you can clearly see
22:40two people,
22:42one in the red hoodie,
22:43one in the tan hoodie.
22:45So, we know it's a suspect,
22:48but still no clear face shots.
22:50It was too difficult
22:52to make out really
22:53who they were.
22:56All right.
22:57I think we're done.
22:58All right.
23:00Appreciate it.
23:08So, the supermarket video
23:11happens around 6.38 p.m.
23:13The shooting happens around 7.15.
23:16We know from here,
23:17they go straight that way.
23:19The RGCC camera captures them
23:21taking a right
23:22and going towards apartments.
23:25So, waiting for that video for now.
23:38So, he was here last night.
23:39Right, I remember.
23:40Yeah.
23:41Hi.
23:41He was good friends with David?
23:47He said, yeah.
23:48He lived close to David,
23:50so he knew him.
23:52We run into a friend of David's.
23:56He was clearly sad.
23:58He appeared to be crying,
23:59and he was just remembering
24:01the good times
24:02and telling us about David.
24:05It was very emotional.
24:08He said he was holding him
24:10in his arms when he was dying.
24:11He was holding his hands.
24:13Wow.
24:14Sorry.
24:15He said that this is the tree
24:17that they used to hang out at.
24:20Wow.
24:20Yeah.
24:21Yeah.
24:22Sorry, you have to go through this.
24:25It's cool.
24:25Okay?
24:33Wow.
24:34We can see, like,
24:36how the emotion that he has
24:38when he lost his friend.
24:41That's tough.
24:43So, we definitely want to find these guys
24:45as soon as possible
24:47it seems to be
24:48a self-defense shooting.
24:50The issue is
24:51you ran away from the scene
24:53and never contacted the police
24:55and never gave any kind of statement to us.
24:57So, we can't just assume
24:59without talking to them
25:00what actually happened.
25:02No.
25:04Justifiable homicides,
25:05they do happen,
25:06but they're not super common.
25:08Like, out of 40 cases,
25:10maybe two or three
25:11have been justifiable.
25:13There's a fine line
25:14in self-defense,
25:15and if anyone needs
25:17to be held responsible
25:18for David's death,
25:19we're going to find out the truth.
25:40So, Miles,
25:41do you want to come see this?
25:42This is a camera
25:44located on a building
25:45closest to Alcy Fouché,
25:47the street where the shooting happened,
25:49down there to the left.
25:51This is before the shooting.
25:53Basically, this camera turns
25:55like every 10, 15 seconds,
25:57and it tracks motion as well.
26:02Two guys on a bicycle.
26:05We got our tan hoodie
26:06and red hoodie.
26:08You can't see their faces.
26:12Looking at the footage,
26:13we know it's them
26:14based on their clothing.
26:16From the store
26:17and from witness statements,
26:20they're wearing
26:20the exact same clothing.
26:23Okay, so they go
26:24into this driveway,
26:25see them get off the bike,
26:27put it right in this driveway
26:29by this fourplex.
26:31This is before
26:32they go to the store,
26:33so now they're walking on foot
26:35and the shooting
26:35and the stores
26:36and all that
26:36are over there to the left.
26:38So one of them
26:39probably lives
26:40in that fourplex.
26:42So I think the approach today
26:44is to go find that location,
26:47knock on all four doors
26:48and see what we can find.
26:49Hopefully get lucky
26:50and it's our suspects.
27:06So this article came out.
27:09A woman asked for help
27:11after two shootings
27:12and three days
27:13in her neighborhood.
27:14Oh, wow.
27:16I'm an organizer.
27:18She's an organizer?
27:19Yeah, and her name
27:21is Christiana
27:22and she held a vigil
27:24for David Cano
27:26on Friday night.
27:29At this point,
27:30we haven't been able
27:31to find David's family members
27:33to inform them
27:34of what happened,
27:35but Miles found out
27:37that someone
27:38had held a vigil for him
27:39who acts kind of
27:41as a community liaison
27:42for that area of town.
27:44So we could probably find her.
27:47It says she's working
27:49to raise money
27:49for Cano's family
27:51to send his body
27:52back to his mother
27:53in Honduras
27:54for a proper burial.
27:56So she's got to know
27:57his mother then, right?
27:58Or some kind of family.
27:59Something.
28:00My best hope
28:01is that maybe
28:02she will help me
28:03identify some family members
28:06of David's.
28:07It's coming together,
28:08so she's got to find
28:09the puzzle pieces
28:10to put together.
28:10The major puzzle piece
28:12right now
28:12is the kids
28:13who ran away.
28:14And that's who
28:15we need to find.
28:16Yeah.
28:21We're going to go
28:22knock on these doors
28:23over here.
28:24Hopefully get lucky
28:25and it's our suspects.
28:30It's Detective
28:31with the police department.
28:35Hey, how are you doing?
28:36My name's Detective Riffle.
28:37How are y'all?
28:38How are you doing?
28:39So we're investigating
28:40a shooting
28:41that happened Wednesday?
28:42Right.
28:43Did y'all hear
28:43anything about it?
28:44Well, we heard it
28:45just like everybody
28:45else heard it.
28:46Does anyone else
28:47live here with y'all?
28:49Okay.
28:49Right.
28:50We appreciate it.
28:51We're just trying
28:51to find out what happened.
28:52Thank you for your time.
28:54All right.
28:54Thank y'all.
29:02All right.
29:05Unfortunately,
29:06the suspects,
29:07they weren't
29:08at the apartment complex.
29:09So right now,
29:11we're going to find
29:12Christina,
29:13who is the organizer
29:15in that article,
29:16who may or may not know
29:17the victim's family members
29:19from Honduras.
29:21So hopefully she does know
29:22a contact information
29:23or something
29:25so that then we can
29:26then reach out
29:27to the victim's mother
29:28and let them know
29:29what's going on.
29:35Hey, how you doing?
29:36Good morning.
29:37Sorry to bother you.
29:38It's okay.
29:39Hi.
29:39Hi.
29:40My name's Detective Riffle
29:42with the New Orleans
29:42Police Department,
29:43Homicide Division.
29:44How you doing, sir?
29:45My partner, Miles.
29:46Hey.
29:47We're investigating
29:47the shooting of David.
29:48Uh-huh.
29:49And we got information
29:50you might know
29:50his family members
29:51or his mother or something.
29:52I do know his mother.
29:53Oh, perfect.
29:53Do you have a contact?
29:57Christina tells us
29:58that she's known David
30:00for the past 15 years
30:01ever since he moved
30:03to New Orleans
30:03and she has the phone number
30:06for his family in Honduras.
30:17Let me just first say
30:19I'm sorry for your loss
30:21and I want to express
30:22my condolences to you
30:23and your family
30:24for, um, for David.
30:31Notifying the family
30:32is always an important
30:34phone call.
30:35I'm responsible
30:36for trying to comfort
30:38the mother as much
30:39as possible
30:39and to let them know
30:41that we're doing
30:42everything we can
30:43to get to the truth
30:45of what happened.
30:46Let her know
30:46when we get any updates
30:48we can share,
30:49we will reach back out
30:50to her.
30:53contacto con usted.
30:55She said,
30:56please do what you can.
30:57You can.
30:58Tell her thank you
30:59and we'll be in touch.
31:00Que queremos estar
31:01en contacto con usted.
31:03Okay.
31:04All right.
31:06Well, thank you.
31:07No problem.
31:08Y'all be safe out there.
31:09Yes, ma'am.
31:09Thank you very much.
31:12After speaking
31:13with Christina,
31:14it was clear to me
31:16that David
31:17had good intentions.
31:18It's just that
31:19in the moment
31:19he wasn't making
31:21the clearest decisions
31:22from what I'm seeing
31:24in video surveillance
31:25and from talking
31:27to witnesses,
31:28it seems like David
31:29chose to put the law
31:31in his own hands.
31:33Ultimately,
31:33we don't like citizens
31:35doing that
31:36because now
31:38situations like this
31:39happen.
31:40It didn't have to happen.
31:50All right.
31:50So go back
31:51to the video
31:52and see if we can
31:53see anything on there.
31:58Unfortunately,
32:00Miles and I
32:01were kind of back
32:01at square one
32:02with trying to identify
32:04the teenagers.
32:07Miles,
32:08did you see this
32:08Crime Stoppers tip?
32:11You have it pulled up
32:11right here?
32:12Yeah.
32:15This is the
32:16Crime Stoppers tip.
32:18It says they were
32:18planning to rob
32:19someone that night,
32:20ended up being a shootout.
32:22And it says that
32:24the individual
32:25wearing the tan hoodie
32:26the night of
32:27is named
32:30Oh, that's huge.
32:42This Crime Stoppers tip,
32:45they attach this
32:46little clip
32:48and it says
32:48the clip is
32:51wearing the same hoodie
32:52supposedly he was
32:54wearing the night
32:54of my shooting.
32:56And we never released
32:57anything out
32:57to the media.
32:58I've released
32:59nothing to the media.
33:02That's the same
33:03sweater from
33:04inside the store?
33:05It looks like it.
33:05Yeah, I remember that.
33:07It matches all that.
33:07Can you still have that
33:08so we can prepare it?
33:09Yeah, I can pull it up.
33:13Oh, yeah,
33:13that's definitely
33:14the same hoodie.
33:15Absolutely, yeah.
33:16Look at that, dude.
33:16That's definitely
33:17the hoodie, dude.
33:22He's got two
33:23open warrants
33:24for two different incidents.
33:25He's 17 years old.
33:29Since the person of interest
33:30has outstanding warrants
33:31for his arrest,
33:32we know it's only
33:33a matter of time
33:34before he gets found
33:35and arrested.
33:36And when that happens,
33:38I want to use
33:39that opportunity
33:39to go speak
33:40with this individual
33:41to hopefully get
33:43their version
33:43of what happened
33:45out there.
33:46It's likely
33:47he's probably
33:48the guy
33:48in the tan hoodie
33:50the night of
33:51my shooting.
33:53However,
33:53the guy who actually
33:54shoots back
33:55shooting David
33:56is a guy in a red hoodie.
33:58So we don't know
33:59who that person is yet.
34:01Hopefully,
34:02he can identify
34:03who the red hoodie is.
34:05What casings
34:05he had on the scene?
34:07David.
34:07We think had a revolver,
34:08so no casings from him.
34:10But the guy
34:10in the red hoodie,
34:11I think it was
34:11four or five casings.
34:12Ballistics all came
34:13from one gun.
34:14And he's doing it
34:14like return fire.
34:15Yeah, clearly.
34:16Yeah.
34:43Hey.
34:44Do you have a secret
34:45over here?
34:49Finance Detective
34:50Bruce Hall.
34:51This is part of the
34:51career if he's not
34:52a partner.
34:54I'm investigating
34:55an incident.
34:56Again,
34:57it happened
34:59December 13th,
35:00so about
35:01two months ago now.
35:02Okay,
35:02you're familiar?
35:03Mm-hmm.
35:04Okay, so we know
35:05you were there,
35:06okay,
35:06and we know
35:06what happened.
35:07We know, like,
35:08the sequence of events.
35:09What we don't know
35:10is, like,
35:11why, like,
35:12why this person
35:13didn't think they did
35:14and why y'all
35:15didn't jump yet.
35:16Just along with us
35:17through that thing.
35:17I don't know
35:18who didn't know
35:18I was just
35:19when I was a friend
35:20and he was telling me
35:21about the good
35:22people to sell it.
35:23And then I was reading
35:25him to do
35:25what he had to do.
35:27And all of the
35:28I seen on shots
35:29and I took
35:29and ran.
35:30Okay.
35:31Who was he planning
35:32on selling?
36:00The guy who was drunk?
36:03Yeah.
36:03Do you know
36:04why, like,
36:04why he was drunk?
36:06Oh, because
36:07I know
36:08his friend
36:08and my friend
36:10was drunk
36:10and took it
36:11like,
36:12we'll sit down,
36:13we'll sit down.
36:14Yeah,
36:14when he's drunk,
36:16his friend
36:16basically told us
36:17he was drunk.
36:18Okay.
36:19He said
36:20after they had
36:21made it back,
36:21after the shooting
36:22occurred,
36:23his friend
36:24had told him
36:25that he had
36:26shot back
36:27at the individual.
36:28I asked him
36:29why he never
36:30contacted the police.
36:31He said
36:32he was scared
36:33and he didn't
36:34believe he did
36:34anything wrong
36:35because he just
36:35ran away.
36:37What is your
36:38friend's name?
36:41I don't know
36:41the news.
36:43That was my first time
36:44meeting him.
36:45And now that I've
36:46never seen him again.
36:48Do you know his phone
36:49number around the chance?
36:51No.
36:52I miss the group.
36:54No.
37:14I'm not writing
37:16an arrest warrant
37:16for this individual
37:17because at this point
37:19of my investigation,
37:20there's nothing
37:21to charge him with.
37:47Hello.
37:48Hey, how are you?
37:49I'm Detective Whipple.
37:52So we need to talk
37:53to your son.
37:54We just need to get
37:55a statement from him.
37:56We know he was there.
37:57We just need to get
37:58his version of what happened.
38:00He ran away.
38:12He ain't been going
38:12to school or nothing.
38:14When is the last time
38:15you saw him?
38:16The last time
38:17he was at my house
38:17might genuinely...
38:19Did you put him out
38:20as a runaway or anything?
38:21No.
38:22Okay.
38:23The mother of the teenager
38:25in the red hoodie
38:26told me that
38:27they hadn't seen him
38:28in months
38:29and that he had run away.
38:31When you see him again,
38:33let him know
38:34when you talk to him.
38:35We just need his version
38:36of what happened.
38:37That's all we shared about.
38:38Right.
38:38Okay.
38:39Okay.
38:40Thank you all.
38:43I ultimately get an arrest
38:44warrant for the 15-year-old.
38:46I charge him
38:47with obstruction of justice
38:48and juvenile possession
38:49of a handgun.
38:50I know he had a firearm.
38:53And after he shot David,
38:55he left the crime scene
38:56with the pistol
38:57that he used to shoot him,
38:58which is obstruction
38:59of justice
39:00for removing evidence
39:01from a crime scene.
39:26The juvenile suspect
39:28is found outside
39:29of our parish.
39:30I attempt to speak with him
39:32with his family member present,
39:36but he and his mother
39:38refused to give me a statement.
39:40He was then booked
39:42and eventually brought
39:44into juvenile custody.
39:47Ultimately,
39:48even though this appears
39:49to be a case of self-defense,
39:52it was a juvenile
39:53in possession
39:53of an illegal firearm.
39:55So he's arrested
39:56in connection
39:57with David's death.
40:27Good morning.
40:28How are you?
40:28Buenas tardes.
40:34Christina, the person who organized the vigil for David Cano,
40:39she acts as a community liaison for the Hispanic community out in this area of town.
40:45I talked to his mother.
40:47I think she's being very strong.
40:49Yeah.
40:50Because it's the only son she had here in the U.S.
40:52So it's the only hope that she had for any, like, support or anything that she had back there was
40:58him.
40:58I think for a lot of her prayers, the miracle happened that we were able to raise so quickly the
41:02money to be able to send him back home, you know.
41:07David was a friend of mine.
41:09He was a very good guy.
41:11He was very, very humble.
41:14He doesn't have family here.
41:15He doesn't have a wife.
41:16He was a baker.
41:17Like, he worked in a Dong Phong Baker for over 10 years.
41:21At the Vietnamese store, he'll be the one taking out their trash from him.
41:24He really loved the people that sold food out there.
41:27Like, that was his spot.
41:28You know, and it was just like pretty much I really think he just felt like he was the protector.
41:34There's a lot of community members right now that feel unsafe.
41:38And they're getting guns that are not registered and things like that.
41:42What I explained to them is that that gun will not always be what saves your lives.
41:47Yeah.
41:47Because even if you shoot one of them, they could come back and retaliate.
41:52Then they're going to retaliate.
41:52Might do more harm than good.
41:54I'm going to be always to protect my community.
41:57And the best way that I can is to make sure that y'all have every information that y'all
42:01need.
42:02Okay.
42:02Well, we appreciate it.
42:04As a detective, we don't always get lucky with video surveillance evidence and other things.
42:10We are at the mercy, a lot of times, of the community and the people involved to tell us what
42:17it is that they know and what's going on.
42:19Y'all only have so much y'all can do.
42:21That's why we've got to stay together.
42:23We're doing everything we can.
42:25Thank you, guys.
42:26Y'all be safe out there.
42:28Thanks for your time.
42:35Working in New Orleans, it has its challenges, but it's also great.
42:42It's a very unique place.
42:45You have so many different cultures.
42:48You have very different neighborhoods, each one with their separate, unique vibe.
42:53And it's something that I'm trying to protect.
42:58I'm happy I chose New Orleans to become a homicide detective.
