00:00Good morning.
00:02Just another day of making our favorite small town better.
00:05Erin, we got to go, babe.
00:06Go fix some old sad houses.
00:08Ben, let's go.
00:09Growing up, I didn't see what was so special about Laurel.
00:12So every day we make sure our girls see it.
00:15Good morning, Katie.
00:15Hey.
00:16Can you believe we fixed up over 100 houses in Laurel?
00:18There's so much opportunity.
00:20So many unloved houses.
00:22I don't know what is going to go wrong in here today.
00:25I'm sure something.
00:27Girl, the bat just flew through here.
00:29That's not good.
00:31Oh, what?
00:32We're about to see the house for the first time.
00:34This is the best part.
00:35Oh, my God.
00:37Holy cow.
00:38Are you serious right now?
00:40Ben, did you make this?
00:41Yeah, I made this.
00:43The real truth of living and working in your hometown is that you're going to see these people everywhere forever.
00:48It's your superpower, Erin.
00:50Color is her superpower.
00:51It is.
00:52It is perfect.
00:53Every day is different when you're renovating houses in Laurel, Mississippi.
01:05You're excited?
01:06Just a little bit.
01:08What you think they're going to do?
01:10I'm just excited to get the porch to hold the makeover.
01:12Maybe re-screen it?
01:14That's something, huh?
01:15Kay and Tecardo actually grew up in Laurel and have been friends since elementary school.
01:19And they have been sweethearts since high school.
01:22Ready?
01:22Oh, yeah.
01:23Well, I hope you got an appetite.
01:25Oh, yeah.
01:26We've been trying to get married about 13 years.
01:29We're still working on it.
01:30We're trying to get there.
01:32I originally grew up in the house next door, this house.
01:36My dad bought sort of like an investment, and he was going to fix it up.
01:40He passed away.
01:41I moved in about two years before he passed.
01:44I didn't know a lot of things.
01:46Need to fix it.
01:47Kay owns the house, but Tecardo spends a ton of time here, and he's been helping Kay with
01:51the house whenever he can.
01:52They want a real proper home before they have a wedding, and it's taken time to save the
01:58money to do that.
01:59Every time we get close, something come up.
02:02They've helped a lot of family members over the years.
02:05All through high school, my mom was ill.
02:08She passed right before senior year.
02:11I knew I had to take care of my brother and my sister.
02:13Make sure that I was going to school.
02:14Make sure that I was eating.
02:15And right after I asked my mom, then her dad, then my dad, then it was like...
02:21My aunt.
02:21Yeah.
02:22Then...
02:23One after another.
02:24Whenever a family member got sick or passed away, it was Kay and Tecardo who would step up
02:28and take care of things.
02:29Now, they feel like they're in a really good place to finally take care of this house.
02:33We have a $75,000 budget.
02:35We're hoping that this really turns this into a home.
02:42Oh, look at them roosters.
02:43It's late.
02:45They're going to lose a crop.
02:46Everybody loves Tecardo.
02:48Tecardo worked at Lot Furniture for years, which was right by our stores.
02:51We saw each other all the time.
02:53All the time.
02:54I worked at Lot for 13 years.
02:56Met a lot of good people.
02:58It was one of the...
02:58It was the oldest store in Laurel.
03:00They cool, man.
03:01You're going to like them, though.
03:02You've known them for a long time?
03:03Long enough, yeah.
03:04Okay.
03:05Tecardo is Tony Stallworth's nephew.
03:08We're for sure putting Tony on this house.
03:11Hey.
03:12Yeah, you're right there.
03:13Oh, okay.
03:14Good morning.
03:16How y'all doing?
03:17We're good, stranger.
03:18Haven't seen you lately.
03:20How are you?
03:21How are you?
03:21Y'all doing good?
03:22Yes.
03:22We're good.
03:23How are you?
03:24Good to see you.
03:25Me too.
03:26This is a big day.
03:27Yeah.
03:27It is a big day.
03:29So this is your house?
03:30I've been here since 2012.
03:31Such a charming little house.
03:34There's a lot about it that's so classic.
03:35It's just getting a little wonky in spite of this.
03:38Yeah.
03:39Yeah.
03:39So this house is two bedrooms, two baths.
03:42Yeah.
03:421,500 square feet.
03:44No air conditioning.
03:45None.
03:46None.
03:46How?
03:47Just cool thoughts.
03:48Trying that right now.
03:49Tell me the things that you love about this house.
03:51You've had a lot of time.
03:52I love the porch.
03:54Yeah.
03:54Yeah.
03:54It's a good porch.
03:55And y'all spend a lot of time there, right?
03:57Oh, yeah.
03:57Right.
03:57We're pretty much off the same day on Sunday.
04:00That's the only day we have off.
04:01Okay.
04:01And so we kind of meet up on the porch.
04:03To save money everywhere we can, we keep what's good.
04:06Okay.
04:06But there are some issues.
04:08We got foundation issues.
04:10Yes.
04:10It needs a roof.
04:11We got bats.
04:13Your gable vent needs some love.
04:15The bats have really done their thing.
04:19It's a pain to get rid of the bats.
04:21Most people don't even know where to begin to get rid of them.
04:25We have a little experience with this.
04:27Yes.
04:28First of all, let's just imagine if you no longer had bats.
04:31Okay.
04:31And we can dress this thing up a little bit.
04:34I love it.
04:35Yes?
04:35Yes.
04:36You still recognize it and it's still home?
04:38Yes.
04:38Okay.
04:39But better.
04:39Good.
04:40Trying to, like, give the house a little of a Creole cottage vibe.
04:44I think of little houses in New Orleans that are this color is what really put me down the path.
04:48Replace this gable vent and the screen door here.
04:51I love the door.
04:52Maybe some color with landscaping.
04:53Okay.
04:54Some flowers.
04:55Yeah, for sure.
04:56I love plants.
04:57So I'm a plant mom.
04:59And dig up the old sidewalk, pour a new sidewalk.
05:02Okay.
05:03Making this front porch into your Sunday fun day living room.
05:07Yes.
05:08But keeping all of this good vinyl siding, it saves you a ton of money.
05:12The best part.
05:14Yeah.
05:14That really is a big focus for us because we want to make your money stretch as far as possible.
05:18It's going to be gorgeous.
05:1975 grand is your budget.
05:22So on the exterior, 35 grand.
05:24That's going to cover your roof, the paint updates, the new walkway, foundation repair.
05:30And air conditioning.
05:31New air conditioning.
05:32Yes.
05:32Okay.
05:33You like it?
05:33That sounds good.
05:34You want to talk about the inside?
05:35Let's go.
05:36Okay.
05:37Get in out of this heat.
05:38Yeah.
05:42All right.
05:43Yeah.
05:44Like, you've gone into a lot of trouble to make this into a real room with real furniture.
05:48That's the vibe I was going for.
05:49It's not just a porch.
05:50Mm-hmm.
05:51Right.
05:51So we will honor that.
05:53Appreciate it.
05:53Yeah.
05:54Let's go on in.
05:55All right.
05:55All right.
05:55Talk about the living room and the mystery room.
05:58Mystery room.
05:59Mystery room.
06:00All right.
06:01Oh, man.
06:03Whoa.
06:04Yeah.
06:05I bet you wish you had a ceiling fan in here to move air.
06:08I wish you had a ceiling.
06:10I don't know.
06:11I don't know how you feel about paneling, but paint would make it feel totally different.
06:15I'm okay with it.
06:16I'm good with it.
06:17And once your roof is fixed, you wouldn't have a leak ever again, so then you could just
06:21do new sheetrock on the ceiling?
06:22Okay.
06:23Well, let's talk about the mystery room, okay?
06:25Yes.
06:25All right?
06:25What is...
06:26The mystery in the middle.
06:27The mystery room.
06:28It's more of a catch-all.
06:29It's a dining room.
06:31I'm sorry.
06:32It's so hot that I have to put on my hat to get wet hair off my face.
06:37All right.
06:38What was going on here?
06:39I set up a little date night little scene.
06:41Oh.
06:41Yeah.
06:42And I actually had a dining room table in here.
06:44Dang.
06:45That's so Ben Napier of you.
06:47Is he a romantic...
06:48Are you a mushy-gushy romantic?
06:50He's mushy-gushy.
06:51When you find a good romantic man who makes gestures like covering the back wall in greenery
06:58and special fairy lights to make you feel special on a date night, you keep that, man.
07:04I'm getting the feeling that you don't have a dining room because maybe you don't need
07:08one.
07:09It's kind of like pity-pity.
07:10Yeah.
07:11Yes.
07:11Where are you eating food?
07:14Well, we have a little nook in the kitchen.
07:16Yeah.
07:16Well, it could be a dining room again.
07:19We have to give it an identity in here.
07:21I really don't know what to do with that middle room, and neither do they.
07:24So for these two rooms, paint the panel and sheetrock ceiling, we want to allot 10 grand.
07:29Okay.
07:30But you have to eat food somewhere.
07:31Yeah.
07:31Let's see the spot.
07:32I've heard about the spot.
07:34This is your favorite spot to sit.
07:35It is.
07:36Okay.
07:37And you want it to keep being your spot?
07:38I love this spot.
07:39I have friends that show up daily.
07:43Those critters.
07:44And you, like, recognize them as the same squirrel and bird.
07:47They come every day.
07:48We got Oscar.
07:49Yeah.
07:49We got Heath.
07:52Oscar and Heath showed up one day, and they never left.
07:55Oscar is a squirrel.
07:57He comes to the window, and Heath is the bird.
08:00It's a cardinal.
08:01Okay.
08:02So you can tell there's something happening for sure in the subfloor when the towel does that.
08:06The subfloor and Joyce probably have some issues.
08:11Has this leaked?
08:12Is that what's happened?
08:13There's a leak somewhere under the kitchen sink.
08:16It's leaking into the floor, so it has, like, a sinky, rocky feeling.
08:20I don't think that's good.
08:22The kitchen will be the most expensive part.
08:25It would really be all about making sure we repair whatever has happened here.
08:30So I think we could keep the layout basically the same as far as plumbing, but change everything else.
08:39So if you pulled out everything that's in this room right now, you build new custom cabinetry where your sink
08:45is now.
08:46The sink would still be make room for a really economical, small dishwasher.
08:52I've never had this washer.
08:53It's important to save money by not moving plumbing.
08:56That would help a lot.
08:57And then laminate countertops would also save a lot of money.
09:01This has gotten shabby, but you could do a new laminate countertop that feels like something new and different.
09:06And you'd have new cabinetry on this wall all the way across with your range and your hood bent in
09:12the middle.
09:12You'd have tons of counter space.
09:14And the flooring, right now the tile is cracked.
09:17We know there are problems, but have to do big repairs under there.
09:20Then I think it would save money and give it a fresh new look if we did rollout vinyl.
09:26There are some cool patterns out there.
09:28We could just make the kitchen work better for you, be more comfortable.
09:33I just want to get this color out.
09:34I know you love those like rich, moody, deep teal navies and lots of natural wood.
09:40No more of that.
09:41No more of these.
09:42For everything that we're planning on doing with the house is about making it work.
09:47It'll still be a good, durable, solid kitchen, but we can do it for $30,000.
09:52I'm cool with that.
09:53Yeah.
09:53Sounds good to me.
09:54Yeah.
09:54That's $75,000.
09:56That gives you a new roof, fixes the foundation, new walkway, HVAC, no vats, a good kitchen.
10:03Is that going to get us to the altar?
10:05That's who's doing it.
10:05Is that going to get us?
10:07What is it going to take?
10:09We already have a ring, right?
10:11Got a ring.
10:11Okay, we got a ring.
10:12That's covered.
10:13I ain't going to put that in the budget.
10:15That's not in the budget.
10:18We really shine with a house like this.
10:21I just love to prove the point that you can have a small budget, a very modest house, and
10:26you can make it beautiful.
10:27You really can.
10:36All right, watch the sinkhole.
10:39We'll deal with that later.
10:40Okay, I want to get started on the screen porch, taking all the screens out, and then just ceiling
10:45tiles in here, right?
10:46Right.
10:46Only ceiling tiles.
10:48Kay has moved out and is staying in a rental in Hattiesburg so we can finally fix this house
10:52for good.
10:53It's actually a pretty small demo.
10:55Made large by the heat.
10:58Bat feces is going to be big today.
11:01Mm-hmm.
11:02Everything can go.
11:03Like, even the floors and the joists and the subfloors, we know for sure they're rotten.
11:07Yeah.
11:07There's severe rot in the kitchen.
11:10Everything is wet.
11:11Under that towel, the towel moves.
11:13One, two, three, two, three.
11:26Better not have been a mere dead gum, and I didn't need that luck.
11:33I love a screen porch.
11:35I do, too.
11:35That old screen is tough.
11:38Like, I bet it was put there in 1970-something.
11:48All these ceiling tiles have got to come down.
11:50I'm really worried about these tiles hitting me on the head, so I got my hard hat on.
11:54Right there with you.
11:55I do have this for you.
11:57What is this, painter's plastic?
11:58Protection, because, listen.
12:03What is that?
12:05It's the bats.
12:06That's the bats?
12:07They are right up there.
12:09When we start pulling this down, guano is going to be raining upon us.
12:14Mm.
12:17We just really don't want the back water to fall on our heads.
12:22I didn't feel anything taking down the ceiling tile.
12:24I went to a different place.
12:27You dissociated?
12:28I dissociated with my body so that I would not feel what was happening to me in there.
12:32They are stirred up.
12:33We got them riled up now.
12:35They're going to come down here if we're not careful.
12:36I need them gone.
12:37I need them gone immediately.
12:40The snail.
12:41I cannot handle.
12:42Are you Batman?
12:43No, I'm Batman.
12:45Does that make me Robin?
12:46Yes.
12:48We got to get these bats out of here, man.
12:49I'll follow the Batman.
12:50You shined the light in the sky.
12:52I don't know how else you would.
12:53Do-do-do-do-do-do.
12:55Huh?
12:56That's the Batman music.
12:57Was it?
12:58Yeah.
13:01But you could hear the bats.
13:03I'm going to go take a shower.
13:04Yes.
13:05Please do that.
13:10Today the bats have to go.
13:12But they're federally protected in Mississippi.
13:15And they keep the mosquito population beat back a little bit.
13:19So when you have a bat infestation, you can't just exterminate them.
13:23You have to relocate them.
13:25And you have to call professionals who know how to do it correctly.
13:29Nathan, we've been demoing in here.
13:31Oh, yeah.
13:31If you can imagine it, the kitchen is actually better than it was.
13:35Nothing's rotten.
13:36It's just dirt.
13:37Oh, my goodness.
13:38You've heard of sunken dens.
13:40Well, this is a sunken kitchen.
13:42Yes.
13:42Yeah.
13:43You want to go to the Batcave?
13:44In this scenario, you're Batman, I'm Robin.
13:48Okay.
13:48Well, I like being Batman.
13:49Yeah.
13:50Take him to the Batcave, Robin.
13:58To get into the attic, you have to go through a scuttle hole that my shoulders touch on.
14:04No.
14:04I can't.
14:08The roof line is there.
14:10So I had to, like...
14:13I'm too tall.
14:14What is that?
14:15I don't like it.
14:17Luckily, I do yoga.
14:19Yoga!
14:22What now, Batman?
14:24Oh, gosh.
14:26If you want to just angle it more towards the front.
14:28Oh, the Bat just flew through him.
14:29That's why I gave you that cap.
14:31Look right here on the side.
14:32So they'll come out the screen.
14:33They'll go through here where it's open at.
14:35Uh-huh.
14:36And they'll go in and then go out.
14:37But we'll go up there on the outside.
14:39We'll put up a one-way valve.
14:41A one-way door is what it is.
14:42Uh-huh.
14:43It'll allow them to come out, but they can't get back in.
14:45But it looks like they're coming in the front also.
14:47We got some over there, too.
14:50Shoot.
14:51Yeah.
14:51Is that them in that screen?
14:53Yeah, that's all them in that screen.
14:55Ugh.
14:56That over there is where they're coming in the most.
14:59And what we'll have to do is do the valve on all three of these areas
15:02so we can get all the bats out.
15:04So now that we have indeed located the bats,
15:06we know everywhere they're at,
15:07he is going to put a valve at every entrance.
15:10And that's the little trapdoor thing that the bats can fly through,
15:13but then they can't fly back.
15:15No more bats.
15:15No more smell.
15:16Then they'll seal off all the gables, all the openings.
15:18You see all that down there?
15:20Yes.
15:20That's all their guano.
15:22That's the stuff you don't want to stir up.
15:23Nope.
15:24He said that he will come by early in the morning next week
15:27to clean up the guano.
15:36Who's the oldest?
15:37He is.
15:38How many of y'all are there?
15:40Four.
15:40I'm the baby.
15:41You're the baby?
15:43Dad gum.
15:44I didn't know that we had baby brother in there.
15:46Anytime you can connect a family member to something you're building,
15:51it's always going to make it that much better.
15:54What was Takardo like growing up?
15:56It was rough.
15:58Very competitive sports, football, basketball, wrestling.
16:02Is it still competitive?
16:03It is.
16:04It is.
16:04Thanksgiving is the day we meet up and we get in the grass.
16:08You still wrestle?
16:09It is day.
16:10I want to build a new day bed for their front porch.
16:13I want that to stay the go-to spot.
16:15So that house is a little bit craftsman.
16:18So I want to build this like a couch that has these wide arms on it
16:24so they can use those for like setting a glass of tea down or something.
16:27A rail across the front.
16:29You know, the mattress would be up here.
16:31That acts as the sofa and then we'll put pillows and stuff on the back
16:33and make it more comfortable.
16:34It's going to be the size of a standard twin size bed.
16:37Maybe add a little notch on the bottom just to give it a little bit of creative detail.
16:43And then up here on the top, I want to just add a little bit of a decorative piece.
16:48Just something to dress it up a little bit.
16:51What he had to fight me for.
16:52Yeah, that'd be your spot, man.
16:55So I learned that Corey and Ticardo are really into wrestling.
16:59Not wrestling.
17:00Wrestling.
17:01Now you might be asking yourself, what's the difference between wrestling and wrestling?
17:06Wrestling is a sport.
17:08Wrestling is just some people having it out in the yard,
17:12but you're just trying to best each other.
17:15If you're building a daybed for a front porch that looks out onto a wrestling yard,
17:21it's bleachers.
17:22It's no longer a place to sit and read and take a nap.
17:25It's a place to sit and eat popcorn and cheer.
17:28Who's the thing going to win?
17:31All right, let's make some slats.
17:46Tony, Tony, Tony.
17:47What's going on, bitch?
17:48Missed you for demo.
17:49Y'all said y'all had bats.
17:51Not here.
17:52You don't do bats?
17:53No, I don't do bats, man.
17:55No.
17:55Tony's afraid of bats.
17:57Is that why he hasn't been here?
17:59That's why he's not been here.
17:59This is his family, and I've been wondering, where is Tony?
18:04Well, he's also been busy on other projects, but...
18:05I know he's been busy.
18:06He stays busy.
18:07I mean, it was literally the floor was caving in in here.
18:10Put me to work.
18:12Let's get it.
18:14We are putting in the new flooring system for the kitchen.
18:25It's miserable hot.
18:27I don't know how Kay and Takarda were doing this.
18:30Have you ever been here?
18:31Yes.
18:32Have you ever...
18:32You come and hang out?
18:33Yes, but it was, like, in the cooler months, so...
18:35Check level.
18:36Check level.
18:37Shouldn't be.
18:39It's good to me.
18:40It's good.
18:44What's going on?
18:46The man that we have been waiting for.
18:49What's up, cool guy?
18:50What's up?
18:51It's hot.
18:51It is.
18:52I've never been more glad to see an HVAC man in my life.
18:57This house has never had air conditioning that we're seeing with the HVAC, the HVAC, is
19:02that we don't have any.
19:03So they can start from a blank canvas, do it exactly however they want to.
19:09No more bats and no more blana, and it won't be long now.
19:13We'll be working in the cool.
19:14It'll have heat and cool now.
19:24Mr. Gregg, we got you a floor.
19:27It's easier to install cabinets when you have a floor.
19:31Oh, gosh, let me tell you something.
19:33That breeze you feel right now, you don't feel that inside this house.
19:36No, you don't, and the air still isn't connected to anything.
19:40Is this the sink?
19:41This is the sink.
19:42That's it.
19:43That's it.
19:43Nope, you gotta save a space for the dishwasher.
19:46You're going to have to move.
19:46There's going to be an 18-inch dishwasher.
19:48It's more dishwasher than they had before.
19:51I'm just trying to be efficient.
19:52This house is about making it livable first, beautiful second.
19:57We're trying to make their budget just stretch as absolutely far as possible.
20:01This saves the most money to keep the plumbing where it was.
20:04I know we usually try to put it with a window or in an island or something,
20:07but in this case, that window is their favorite spot to sit and watch Oscar and Heath,
20:12the bird and squirrel that live outside.
20:23It's going up on the walls in the front two rooms,
20:25but I have got to finalize color for the kitchen cabinet,
20:28so I'm bringing Mallory with me because she's got a great eye for design.
20:31This is the thing.
20:32We want to be as affordable as possible,
20:34but also give her as much design as we possibly can
20:37so we can be bold in the kitchen.
20:39So the cabinets are going to be a bold color.
20:41Yes.
20:41Typically, if I want a bold color, I'm going Valspar.
20:44This is a big opportunity.
20:45Yeah.
20:45I think she just wanted the house to feel bright and clean and a little more modern.
21:07So they have to dig up the old sidewalk.
21:11Then hopefully just get it really leveled up is our biggest problem.
21:14They've got to level up everything.
21:24Laramie and I are installing the laminate countertops.
21:33People have a lot of bad things to say about laminate
21:36only because we have since moved on to creating more expensive
21:40and luxurious countertop surfaces,
21:42but there's nothing wrong with laminate.
21:44When it's right for your budget, it's right for your kitchen,
21:46especially if it looks pretty.
21:48Dang.
21:51No, that looks good.
21:52Yeah.
21:52This is way, way better than the laminate countertops our mammals had in the 80s and 90s.
21:58Kay loves the look of stone that's this color,
22:02and she also loves butcher block.
22:04Both of those were a little out of budget,
22:05but I think I'm going to do a wood V-groove backsplash
22:09so she gets the natural wood she wanted in here.
22:12It looks so good, y'all.
22:14Can you talk to me about this room?
22:17Sure.
22:17Whatever this room is going to be called.
22:19Oh, come around.
22:20Oh, my gosh.
22:21I don't know what we call this room.
22:22It's the dining room,
22:23but Kay and Tecardo said they don't really need a proper dining room.
22:27They've used it as a lounge for date nights,
22:29a place that feels cool to hang out.
22:31We got cold air.
22:32Shut that door.
22:34It feels so good.
22:35This is the first time I've felt cold air in this house.
22:38First time anybody's felt cold air in this house.
22:40So much.
22:40Finally know exactly what I'm doing.
22:42I need a table for this room,
22:44but not like a dining table,
22:47a banquette table.
22:49So we're going dining room.
22:51But smaller than that.
22:52They never use this door.
22:54Into the hallway.
22:55So there will still be room to pass through.
22:57If they were to some reason start using this door.
23:00They could.
23:01The only thing they suggested
23:02was that they would use this room possibly for like date nights
23:05to make it feel like they're somewhere special.
23:09It's a lounge.
23:10Here's what I need.
23:11Here's what I'm thinking.
23:12You ready?
23:12We're going to have a bench here that's longer,
23:15a shorter bench here,
23:17the table here.
23:18We're going to put the light fixture over it.
23:20And then over here,
23:21I've ordered some bookcases that are prefab
23:24for right and left of the window.
23:26And then we'll have a settee
23:28in the middle in front of the window.
23:30What about over here?
23:30We can have a little space for a little storage or plants.
23:33She loves plants.
23:35Make this room like romantic and fun and playful.
23:38And also, if they're going to host, they can wrestle in the front yard,
23:42but you have more seating.
23:44Mm-hmm.
23:45So we're calling this a dining lounge?
23:47Sure.
23:48Sure.
23:48I like that.
23:55Guess who's coming today?
23:57Bobby Joe.
23:58Did you see this before?
24:00Oh, yeah.
24:01So this was real thin and all broke up.
24:04We're going to get it fixed.
24:05Oh, yeah.
24:06Well, when we get all this done,
24:07this is going to be a wrestling yard.
24:09Sure enough.
24:10It's their favorite thing to do.
24:11You ever do any wrestling?
24:12Oh, no.
24:13I didn't, but I enjoy it.
24:16Bobby Joe has a very specific Southern dialect
24:20that's a little bit hard for those outside of our area
24:23to understand, maybe.
24:25What would your wrestling nickname be if you was a wrestler?
24:28They used to call me the Junkyard Dog.
24:33I guess my wrestling name would just have to be Big Ben.
24:36Yeah.
24:40I would wear basically a one-piece swimsuit,
24:42but with the shorts, you know.
24:44One shoulder.
24:45Andre the Giant style.
24:47That's you.
24:50You know, people always compare me to Andre the Giant.
24:55Get a new walkway, and then when that's done,
24:57Hunter will come back and do the fresh landscaping.
24:59I just am ready to see some paint happen outside,
25:02and then we're going to be looking way better out here.
25:08What do you think?
25:08It looks great.
25:09Yeah.
25:10Yeah?
25:10Yeah.
25:11Yeah, that's great.
25:11This here is a Junkyard Dog, Aaron.
25:13Yeah, yeah.
25:14That's his wrestling name.
25:15That's what they used to call the Entitled Lill.
25:17Are you out of the game now?
25:19Yeah, yeah, yeah.
25:20Well, it looks great, y'all.
25:21We got stuff happening in the kitchen.
25:3019 and three quarters.
25:32Are you measuring?
25:32Yes, sir.
25:33We are working on a backsplash.
25:35I feel confident that I can do this myself.
25:45That is perfect.
25:48I feel like it's something.
25:50It's time for me to learn how to do a V-groove backsplash.
25:55Aaron, are we going to paint these?
25:57No, this is the only, like, wood moment.
26:02We're going to give her natural wood backsplash.
26:04I think it'll look good if you do a light stain on all of it.
26:07A light stain.
26:14Yeah, they say that you are an expert at something when you have 10,000 hours of experience in it.
26:18But five minutes.
26:20It's so long.
26:20You're a quick learner.
26:21Real quick.
26:22Oh, thank you.
26:32Oh, my goodness.
26:34Locked furniture is closing after 109?
26:38Over 100 years.
26:39Yeah.
26:40Over 100 years.
26:41And this is, like, one of those...
26:43We're going to do this business downtown.
26:44Hey.
26:45Hey, y'all, welcome.
26:47Y'all been busy.
26:48We have.
26:49Oh, my word.
26:50Welcome to the estate sale.
26:51Yes.
26:52This is the end of an era.
26:53I know.
26:54It sure is.
26:55The Rowles are ready to retire.
26:56It makes sense.
26:57So they're having an estate sale.
26:59Y'all must have brought stuff in from, like, all the storage areas.
27:02Everywhere.
27:03Wow.
27:04There's so much good stuff.
27:06We're doing Kay and Ticardo's house.
27:08That is so exciting.
27:10Isn't that fun?
27:11There's still not a wedding night, though.
27:12Don't get excited.
27:13Well, it'll come.
27:14It'll come.
27:14They're going to get married sooner than later, I hope.
27:17And Ticardo would love if there were pieces from Lott.
27:19He would be so happy to have a piece of Lott, because he was here almost 15 years.
27:23These Bentwood chairs.
27:25Those are really great.
27:26Aren't those so cute?
27:27Forty.
27:27And there's five of them.
27:29In our great condition.
27:30I want all of those.
27:33I think it is sad any time one of those heritage businesses closes.
27:37Yeah.
27:38In town.
27:38We all feel it a little bit.
27:40But also exciting, just because something new, something fresh is going to come.
27:44That's a good label.
27:45Isn't that good?
27:46I love that dollhouse.
27:47Always have.
27:48I feel like the girls have plenty, though.
27:50Yeah, they do.
27:56What is that?
27:58It looks like a gumball machine.
28:01Is it plastic or glass?
28:04Lucite.
28:06It's one of those old terrariums.
28:09Dang.
28:10Do you know what I'm talking about?
28:10Yeah, it's vented up here.
28:11Kay loves plants in the house.
28:13I actually think she might really like this.
28:15Is this crazy?
28:16It's pretty crazy, but it's really fun and unexpected.
28:19Her taste is a little more modern.
28:21I'm getting this.
28:21Bye-bye.
28:51Aaron, man.
28:51They made me go up in the attic.
28:53I've been smelling them.
28:54Bat guano smells like mothball-ish.
28:57It's acrid.
28:58It's disgusting.
28:59Dang it.
29:01Bats are back.
29:04Kay and Tocardo are coming home in one week.
29:06So we had to call Nathan back.
29:08So you saw the signal?
29:09Saw the bat signal, yeah.
29:10Saw it in the sky.
29:11I did take a look up there, and it looks to me that they have come back,
29:16and they're already in the side of the screen up there in the gable vent.
29:19Hey, Batman returns.
29:21Yeah, I've been smelling them.
29:22Well, he just confirmed it, right?
29:24Yes, I did.
29:25Looks like what happened, the screen on the back side.
29:28We took your screen down.
29:29We needed to paint it and fix it, so we took it down, but we told them to put it
29:32on the inside.
29:33Yep.
29:34Once they've lived in this house for one time period, they'll come back.
29:37So those bats were able to get in to the actual attic again.
29:40Aw.
29:40So it'll be good to keep that screen on.
29:43So what happened is...
29:45It's our fault.
29:47How big of a gap can a bat get through?
29:50Usually about a pinky.
29:52They put the screen over the gable vent, but we had not yet scraped or painted.
29:56So we had the guys move the screen to the inside of the gable.
30:00Which created a perfect habitat for the bat attack.
30:05What we have to do is just screen the front side to where we can prevent them from going back
30:10into it.
30:11Because if they get into that gable and hang on that screen, they'll just keep going back into that attic.
30:14Like, are we going to have bats forever?
30:16As long as we're able to get that front closed up and prevent them from actually going back in to
30:21the actual gable itself,
30:22then we'll be able to keep them out.
30:23Is this even possible in a week?
30:25Bats will come out within 24 to 48 hours after we put the valve up.
30:29I'd be so glad when they're gone.
30:30I hope that they're gone by then, and I hope that the smell is mostly gone, if it's not totally
30:35gone.
30:36He's going to redo the bat valve.
30:39He's going to come back, and we're going to do a hardware cloth screen.
30:44He will fit it inside our trim around the vent so that it doesn't stand out.
31:07See, Mom and Dad, that's why I got this art degree.
31:10Yeah.
31:31I am so excited for Kay and Tecardo to come home and see how fresh and cool their house is,
31:39because it is air conditioning.
31:41And it smells nice because the bats are gone.
31:43I mean, it's like a different house for those two reasons, and you don't even take into account the way
31:47it looks.
31:49The lounge, dining room, date night spot, Kay needed storage in there.
31:54We gave that to her around the windows, and then the benches and the banquette in the corner.
31:59It feels like it's a cute little cafe.
32:02It is a dining room, but it's also a sitting room.
32:05We've still got the little sitting spot in the window in the kitchen so Kay can observe Heath and Oscar,
32:12assuming they come back.
32:14This house was a study in how far you can stretch a budget.
32:18We used laminate countertops.
32:20We used roll-out vinyl flooring in the kitchen.
32:23When you can save money on those big things, then you can find ways to creatively make the house feel
32:29transformed.
32:31You know, Ben was really focused on making the daybed on the front porch something beautiful, something that will last,
32:37an heirloom,
32:37because that's where they always spend all their time.
32:40It is a work of art.
32:41Kay and Tecardo's entire relationship has been a very tumultuous time for them with their families, helping others instead of
32:49themselves.
32:49The house was always the very dead last priority for them.
32:54And so now, maybe this changes their priorities.
32:57Maybe they'll get married to him.
32:59I don't know.
32:59We'll see.
33:00Maybe one day, this house will be the Jones-Williams house.
33:06What are you doing?
33:07I love it.
33:08I absolutely love it.
33:17That's crazy.
33:18He's leaving.
33:19Oh, my goodness.
33:21Oh, my goodness.
33:22It looks so good.
33:23Oh, my God.
33:26Oh, my goodness.
33:28I never saw this coming.
33:30You like it?
33:30I love it.
33:34Oh, my goodness.
33:35It looks flat.
33:36You can see the whole house now.
33:38Yeah.
33:38Man, it looks good, though.
33:39Oh, my goodness.
33:41We put a roof on the house.
33:42We rescreened the front porch.
33:45We added air conditioning.
33:47Y'all blocked the bats.
33:48Bats are out of here, baby.
33:51New screen in the gable.
33:52That should keep them out for good.
33:55I'm excited about the sidewalk and the doors.
33:58Yes.
33:59We got fresh paint on the brick and the skirting and the columns to save money where we could
34:04on the exterior.
34:05Man, it looks so good.
34:08I mean, I like the landscape and everything, man.
34:10It's crazy.
34:11Look at the yard.
34:12I know, right?
34:12The yard was kind of just disappearing.
34:15It looked like there had been an earthquake here.
34:17Tocardo, you can wrestle in the yard.
34:19With your brothers.
34:21Your brother, Corey, helped me in the wood shop with something, and he said every holiday
34:25get-together ends up turning into a wrestling match.
34:27If I'm a little over-wrestling, I'm just saying.
34:30He said.
34:31My knees are not made for that no more, no.
34:32He said.
34:33I might give him one match.
34:34I'm ready to see you.
34:35Really?
34:36Let's go.
34:36Let's go.
34:37Go for it.
34:43Oh, my goodness.
34:47This is gorgeous.
34:50You like it?
34:51I love it.
34:55You had a day bed out here.
34:56This one is made with love.
35:00Your brother, Corey, helped me build this.
35:02This is what I learned about Corey.
35:05This is how I learned so much about your wrestling.
35:07So you think Corey put the pillows on the bed?
35:09No, no.
35:09He helped me build it.
35:11That's cool, though.
35:12That's cool.
35:13That is amazing.
35:14I love the wide armrests because they're like end tables.
35:16You can sit a plate on it.
35:18They're wide enough.
35:19It's Spanish cedar, so it will last forever out here covered like this.
35:23And you have screens.
35:24The bugs will stay out.
35:28Sunday, fun day.
35:29Sunday, fun day.
35:30Sunday, fun day.
35:30Sunday, fun day.
35:31It's back.
35:32Beautiful.
35:33Yeah, but the inside is even better.
35:37Oh, my goodness.
35:40This is crazy.
35:41What do you think?
35:42No way.
35:43No way.
35:44Is this my house?
35:45Yes.
35:48It is.
35:49This is crazy.
35:50This is crazy.
35:51Feels good in here.
35:52It's weird.
35:52I mean, this air conditioning is the best thing we did.
35:55Yeah.
35:55I've never had to feel like this.
35:57It's so cool.
35:59It's not hot.
36:01You have new ceilings, fresh paint, new ceiling fan, uncover the fireplace, and that's it.
36:09You said this is amazing.
36:12Like it ain't nothing.
36:13You know, you're just...
36:14That's it.
36:14Oh, there's way better.
36:15No, no.
36:17Oh, my goodness.
36:17The lounge.
36:18Date nights.
36:18Go see.
36:19The lounge.
36:19That's what we're calling at the lounge room.
36:21The lounge.
36:22Yeah, because it's kind of a dining room.
36:24Oh, my God.
36:29Oh, this is amazing.
36:32Okay.
36:32And you can invite family over for dinner, but it's also like a sitting room.
36:36But you really needed storage.
36:39Oh, my.
36:40Lots of storage over here because I could tell you were struggling to find storage.
36:43It's a cabinet.
36:44Yeah.
36:45So, we did these bookcases beside the window.
36:48Oh, I know that.
36:49Oh, those people.
36:56And then the banquette is all storage.
36:58You can lift that up and put things inside.
37:00Oh, okay.
37:01I love it.
37:02This table, Josh and I built it in the shop.
37:05This was Erin's idea.
37:07She kind of designed it.
37:07I just want it to be a really pretty little cafe table.
37:11It is cute, though.
37:12It didn't take up the whole room, so you could still use this door.
37:15If you want to.
37:16It's still not technically a dining room.
37:18It's a lounge room.
37:19I was going to say, make the whole room look, like, bigger.
37:22Pictures from the fair.
37:23That's sweet.
37:23What's up with you and Ferris wheels?
37:25We love them.
37:26Well, that's kind of when we first started dating.
37:28The fair is in town this week, so.
37:31We should go.
37:32Yeah, y'all should go.
37:33Yeah.
37:33This is my favorite.
37:34You like it?
37:35I love it.
37:36Can you tell me?
37:37Nope.
37:37But I'll try.
37:38Okay.
37:39We found the terrarium at the lot closing sale.
37:42Felt like it was kind of like your vibe, your plant lady vibe.
37:46Yeah, I love plants.
37:46I love it.
37:47Yeah.
37:47And then we got these little chairs that I thought were so pretty.
37:51Yeah, I recognize them.
37:52Yeah.
37:52Awesome.
37:53For real.
37:54With the windows being open like this, nothing in front of them, you can sit here now and
37:59watch for Oscar and Heath.
38:00No, you didn't.
38:01Wait a minute.
38:03Oscar and Heath built their own houses while we were here.
38:05Isn't that amazing?
38:06They built it?
38:07Yeah.
38:08We scared them off, I think, because we haven't seen them, and so I thought if we get them
38:12cute little houses, maybe they'll come back.
38:14They'll come back.
38:15Which one's Oscar and which one's Heath?
38:16Show you when they come out.
38:17Okay.
38:19Oscar's the squirrel.
38:20Yes.
38:20Heath is the bird.
38:21That's right.
38:22Okay.
38:22But you still have your spot.
38:25I'm excited.
38:27Oh!
38:34What?
38:35Yo!
38:37No.
38:41You see this?
38:43This is crazy.
38:44Yeah.
38:44A little better?
38:45This is crazy.
38:46A little better?
38:47What?
38:48Are you serious?
38:50Different!
38:51Yes.
38:51Actually, this area was about to just sink and fall.
38:57Hold up.
38:58No, no, no.
38:59This isn't our kitchen.
39:00No, it's not.
39:01No, it's not.
39:01This is so your kitchen.
39:03Look how wide open it is.
39:04They opened the whole kitchen.
39:06Cousin Tony came over and we took everything out and then rebuilt.
39:10We did have to take out the entire floor, all the joists, the subfloor, everything, because
39:16it had leaked from the sink for so long that it had spread everywhere.
39:20Cousin Tony.
39:20Cousin Tony.
39:21Cousin Tony.
39:21And he and I did the V-Group backsplash.
39:23He taught me his ways.
39:25You wanted teal kitchen cabinets.
39:27Yes.
39:27You wanted wood accents.
39:28You wanted some natural wood somewhere.
39:30Yes.
39:30But it never looked like this in my head.
39:33You've got laminate countertops, sheet vinyl floors.
39:36I feel like it achieves the look that you were kind of after.
39:41This is amazing.
39:43Is that a dishwasher?
39:44Yes, it is, Kay.
39:46That is your very own dishwasher.
39:48And it's small but mighty.
39:49This is crazy.
39:50Ticardo can just sit here and talk to Oscar and Heath.
39:54Sure, sure.
39:54Instead of having to wash dishes.
39:56And here's your spot.
39:57So when Kay is cooking, you can still hang in the kitchen.
40:01As nice as it feels inside, let's go sit on that front porch.
40:04Yeah.
40:05Wow, wow, wow.
40:10Are you so glad to be home?
40:12I am.
40:13Good.
40:13Y'all, it ain't a Sunday, but.
40:15It feels like one.
40:16It feels nice.
40:17It feels like it.
40:18Please keep using your front porch, though.
40:20I am.
40:21Even though you have air conditioning.
40:22This is where we have Sunday Sunday at.
40:24Yeah.
40:24You gave us $75,000 to work on this house, which is a tight budget.
40:29So we had to be smart about it.
40:31With a lot to do.
40:32It's real good.
40:33It's real good.
40:34Good.
40:35I love it.
40:35Good.
40:36I feel like this has been something that was just like the last priority on the back burner
40:40because everything and everyone else was your first priority.
40:44I hope that this can be a happy, fresh start.
40:47Something new.
40:48One last thing.
40:50We have $13 left over.
40:53What's this about?
40:54Conveniently, the cost of a marriage license in Mississippi.
40:59That's how much it comes.
41:01That's right.
41:02That's right.
41:03Ricardo, don't go to the fair tonight and blow it on a corn dog.
41:06Blow it on the fair as well.
41:08I don't think we got enough for a corn dog with this.
41:16It's been four years.
41:18Our friend Michael McKinnon is an architect in town, and he's asked us to come back and finish
41:23this building, but we are coming back under very different circumstances.
41:28What happened was probably the worst thing I could have, you know, fathomed.
41:32We were seeing pictures of this building up in smoke.
41:36I mean, it was billowing out of this area that we had just finished.
41:41You know, part of me hopes it goes back to what it was.
41:44Do we feel super solid about this plan?
41:46Nope.
41:47That's what makes it a good one.
41:50Michael's taste is totally not my taste, but we can't just do English country houses every
41:55day.
41:56I need to call this building complete.
41:58y'all.
