11:33And that has changed the outcome of several races here.
11:36We'll talk more about that in a while.
11:38But right now, everybody in this place, and there are thousands of them, are waiting to hear these words.
11:50Here today to say the most famous words in motorsports, please welcome Multi-Platinum Grammy Award winner, Zach Brown.
12:00Alongside executive chairwoman and chief visionary officer of her namesake company, Kendra Scott, joined by Jack Link's Sasquatch.
12:12Talladega, are you ready?
12:15Talladega!
12:20Drivers, start your engines!
12:3540 determined drivers and their crews.
12:39Thousands of sun-drenched fans.
12:41Yep.
12:42This is Talladega.
13:00Welcome back to the Jack Link's 500 at Talladega Super Speedway.
13:08NASCAR's biggest oval and fastest track.
13:13Cars are set to roll off from the starting line.
13:16Let's see if we can work with our bullsitter today.
13:18Yeah, let's do that.
13:19Hey, Tyler Reddick.
13:20Kevin and Clint up in the booth.
13:21Got you a new contract.
13:23Got a new sponsor on that car.
13:25What do you have in store for today?
13:27What do you think the plan is, buddy?
13:29Yeah, I think for us, we just got to hit our strategy.
13:31We can do a really good job of that.
13:33Stage one, we can get some stage points.
13:35Yeah, just to be interesting to see how this plays out in the stage two and three with the short
13:41of weight.
13:42We'll do our best to hit it right.
13:43We'll see if we can do that.
13:45All right, buddy.
13:46We'll have a good time out there.
13:47We'll be watching, and good luck.
13:50Thank you, guys.
13:52We'll have a good time.
13:52Qualifying yesterday was reigned out, so the Jack's Jack Link's starting grid was set by points.
13:59Tyler Reddick on the front row with Kyle Larson looking for his first drafting track win.
14:05Row two, we've got two-time Talladega winner Denny Hamlin.
14:08We've got his first NASCAR Cup Series win here, Bubba Wallace.
14:12Regan?
14:13Well, Kevin, why much of the attention this season, and rightfully so, has been on Tyler Reddick,
14:17do not sleep on his 23-11 teammate Bubba Wallace, off to the best start of his career,
14:22and in position to win both of the first two drafting track races this season at Daytona and Atlanta.
14:27He has looked extremely strong so far this season.
14:30When we come to Talladega, he's the 2021 winner of this race,
14:35has three straight top tens coming into this weekend at Talladega,
14:38and as Crew Chief Charles and I told me, when we go to any weekend, we're confident,
14:42but this weekend, we expect the win to go through this 23 car.
14:48We've got a lot of winners up front, and row three is no exception.
14:51It's Chase Briscoe and a six-time Talladega winner, Brad Keselowski.
14:55Row four, a pair of Hendrick Chevys, William Byron, and Chase Elliott, a two-time Talladega winner.
15:02Here's Josh Sims.
15:03And there's a ton of confidence for Chase Elliott and this nine-team heading into this race.
15:08As you mentioned, a two-time winner here.
15:10Spoke with the team earlier today, and they told me not much needs to change in terms of their approach.
15:15They have a good notebook.
15:16They know what they need to do.
15:18Now it's about execution from the top of the pit box to pit road and out on the track,
15:22especially when things get intense.
15:25Chase has a knack for making the right moves when it matters to look to do that once again today
15:29as he looks for his third win at Talladega and his second win of the season.
15:33Row five, a driver who has had a great start to the season.
15:37Ty Gibbs and Prosper Texas' finest, Chris Buescher.
15:41Row number six, this track likes to give first-time winners.
15:44They get a copy of Ryan Preece, Carson Josevar.
15:49Row seven, Austin Sendrick, last year's winner in a Ford and the Toyota of Christopher Bell.
15:55Row number eight, three-time Talladega winner Ryan Blaney and Daniel Suarez.
16:01Jamie?
16:02Well, Ryan Blaney is making his 300th career start with Team Penske,
16:06and what a great team to be with here at Talladega.
16:09Over the last 11 years, they've won almost 50% of the races.
16:14So what's it going to take today?
16:16They obviously haven't turned a single lap yet,
16:18but as Crew Chief Jonathan Hassler told me,
16:20we've got to stay up with the draft, stay with our four teammates,
16:23but we also want to maximize those stage points.
16:26Ryan Blaney, of course, looking for his fourth career win here at Talladega,
16:30the biggest, baddest track we go to in NASCAR.
16:34Thanks, Jamie.
16:37Oh, look at that crowd.
16:39Forty cars strong.
16:40The rest of our lineup is on the pylon on the left side of your screen.
16:44Casey Mears, due to the points setting,
16:48the lineup was the only car not to make the field.
16:53Now let's take a closer look at the lift system
16:57with our Crew Chief Larry McGrath.
16:59You know, Mike, Talladega is the biggest oval track we race at
17:02over two and a half miles in length.
17:04If you have an issue over turn two or the backstretch,
17:06you can't get back to pit road, your day might be over.
17:09Let's go to our Toyota Camry Cutaway car
17:11and see exactly what NASCAR mandates at the super speedway tracks.
17:15We'll see this.
17:16A car will get turned off turn two and down the inside of the backstretch.
17:20It may have little to no damage, just flat tires.
17:23The car will be sitting on the racetrack with that orange aluminum rub block
17:27like you see right there under the right rear.
17:28There's five of them under that car.
17:30Now let's go to the right rear coilover shock.
17:33You're going to see a pneumatic actuator that's been added actually
17:36to all four of the coilover shocks.
17:38Now you see that hose that's highlighted.
17:41That activates the actuator with air pressure.
17:44Where does that air pressure come from?
17:46Let's go over to the left side A post on the left side of the driver at the base of
17:50it.
17:50You see that valve.
17:52A safety worker shoots air into that valve.
17:54It activates all four actuators.
17:57You'll see the car come up off the ground.
17:59The driver can drive it back to pit road for four fresh tires.
18:01Now when he gets to the pits, a crew member releases the air from all the shocks.
18:05Everything's back to normal.
18:07Here's one more example how it will work.
18:09This was at the dual race back at Daytona in February.
18:12Casey Mears, a 66 car, sitting in the grass on those rub blocks.
18:16You see the car come up off the ground after the air pressure is added.
18:19The actuators, he got back to pit road for four fresh tires.
18:23And guys, that led to an eighth place finish that put him in the Daytona 500.
18:27Yeah, that's great for the drivers.
18:28And also, it is going to shorten up the length of these caution periods.
18:32Won't need as many records.
18:33That's the key right there, in my opinion.
18:35For a viewer at home, it just shortens that stop.
18:39Period, big time.
18:40But pretty slick.
18:41It works so good.
18:42Those engineers are pretty handy every now and then.
18:44Oh, they are.
18:45And that's one thing that I don't think our sport gets enough credit for is the innovation
18:48that continuously happens, whether it's on safety or, you know, a situation like this
18:52when we have a problem.
18:54Now, prior to this race, the three-stage lengths, the longest stage was the last stage.
19:01And now, Larry, NASCAR has flipped the script on us.
19:03Well, that's why our race analysis is going to have a little different look.
19:07188 laps, 500 miles.
19:09But you look at stage one, 98 laps.
19:12You have the option of one stop or two stops.
19:15Stage two and three, 45 laps apiece.
19:17No pit stop needed.
19:19You'll pit between the stages and look at the field window.
19:21We have it highlighted for a reason.
19:2342 to 50 laps.
19:25It could be even greater depending on what the driver does.
19:28Okay.
19:29Well, it's, and NASCAR did this because they just don't want everybody saving gas.
19:34These races are great when these guys are getting after it.
19:38And I love the changes.
19:39Can't wait to see how it all works out because I don't think we really understand what everybody's
19:43strategy is NASCAR sends out a video every week to the drivers with the rules of the road
19:49for that race.
19:51And especially at Talladega, especially during green flag pit stops, you are not allowed
19:57to come up onto the racing surface and impede cars that are trying to come by at speed.
20:05So, Larry, a good example of this is what happened here yesterday.
20:09Well, it did.
20:10This was in green flag pit stops.
20:12The big concern is just about 15 to 20 miles per hour difference in those leaders in those
20:17cars coming up on pit road.
20:19This has always been a rule, but it came to life in the Daytona 500.
20:23We saw it yesterday.
20:24And that's why NASCAR told the drivers, you're not going to do it, that you need to fall in
20:29line behind the line of cars that's at speed.
20:31This needed fixed.
20:33There's no way you'd convince me to go out there and do that.
20:35You want me to pull up in front of this pack run?
20:37It sometimes can be even faster than 20, 30 mile an hour.
20:40And by the way, there's not just one of them either, the whole pack.
20:43Yeah.
20:44And that was always something that I'd never liked about the racing that was going on.
20:48But blocking has become a key part of what we do.
20:52The guy that wins this race today is most likely going to make a great block.
20:55The guy that gets crashed and doesn't turn out okay is probably going to make a bad block.
21:00But I think that NASCAR just had to step in, say, this is too far.
21:04We're going to get somebody hurt.
21:05Love the change.
21:06Well, at the end of the day, there's a difference between blocking and impeding traffic.
21:09Impeding is certainly pulling out in front of them, purposely slowing them down and making
21:13them a decision, putting them in a decision that's at its harm's way.
21:19Beautiful day here.
21:21Temperature is going to get to 80.
21:23Light breeze out of the northeast.
21:25This is the most fun you can have at a racetrack.
21:28The infield is absolutely insane.
21:31It's so fun to watch everybody.
21:33You want to talk about innovation, Kevin.
21:35Man, I saw people glamping out there.
21:37There's a glamping section now.
21:39The boulevard was out of control last night.
21:41Had some football players in town.
21:43Took them out.
21:43Showed them the banking.
21:44I think the banking of this track is what people don't realize, is how steep the banking is.
21:50You get those guys out there.
21:51It's my favorite thing to do and show them just how steep these banks are.
21:55Yeah, 33 degrees.
21:55It's banked like the angle of the roof on your house.
21:58Let's take a look at track facts sponsored by Ford Racing.
22:02Austin Sendrick is the defending winner of this race.
22:04He's the last Ford winner here.
22:06Ford's won 11 out of the last 20.
22:0933 races in all.
22:11And our final fact is glamping.
22:13Isn't that short for glamorous camping or something like that?
22:16Well, I don't know how glamping it was when it poured rain that night.
22:19It wasn't looking like they were having so much fun.
22:21I was going to say it's right up Clint's alley.
22:25I need AC, buddy, and a hot shower.
22:27I don't know.
22:28All right.
22:28These next three could be the desperate hours for a number of drivers.
22:34Well, look, this list is pretty impressive with the quality of drivers that we have.
22:39These guys won't think it's impressive, but Kyle Busch, Brad Kozlowski, Alex Bowman, so
22:45many of these guys that have had options or capability to win another racetrack, but not
22:51lately.
22:52You know, they hadn't been able to capitalize on that.
22:55And our defending champion, Kyle Larson, you know, he's coming up on a year.
22:59So a lot of big streaks that could come to an end today.
23:02You know, Kyle has always had trouble on these super speedways.
23:05They give him fits.
23:06He's always right there.
23:07Finished second here before, but just hasn't punched and got that win, you know, off his
23:12back.
23:12First time.
23:13It could happen right here today.
23:14Starting up front.
23:15And those aren't the drivers that could win.
23:19That list is a whole lot longer.
23:21Those are drivers that expect to win.
23:24Now, there are track trucks out near the entrance of Pitt Road, and they are looking for weepers
23:30up through the asphalt from overnight rain.
23:32So a little bit of sweep up being done there to make sure that entry and that's it.
23:37Road is dry.
23:39Very important because it affected this race a year ago.
23:42So Shane Van Gisburgh, and you saw the left side's got on a weeper right there on that
23:47yellow.
23:47And as soon as he hit that water, the car spun sideways and brought out a caution.
23:54You can see it right there, the water spray.
23:57Yeah, and it gets in those seams on the racetrack.
24:00It just kind of builds up.
24:01And then as the moisture or the temperature comes up, the moisture starts to push out from
24:05underneath that asphalt.
24:06And you see exactly what you have right there.
24:08So you have to be aware of where those are to make sure that you don't get in them.
24:14All right.
24:14We've got a couple of pre-race pep talks.
24:16You see some of the weepers there up through those seams in the asphalt.
24:20Down, that's off the racing surface, what you just showed.
24:23We have Brad Keselowski and William Byron.
24:26Keep me posted as best we can know what's going on in here.
24:29And taking care of fuel when you can.
24:31You bet your body have a great day as well.
24:33We'll see you here in a little bit.
24:34And keep me posted.
24:35You can see a lot of things I can't, man.
24:37I'm not going to do you guys to relay.
24:41I never like to absolutely 100% depend on the spotty, but they have to lean on that spotter a
24:48lot today.
24:49Let's hear what William Byron has to say.
24:51All right.
24:52We've got a good-looking car.
24:54New primary sponsor.
24:56It's a fun day to go get a win.
24:58So that's cute.
24:59Communicate.
24:59Work together.
25:00Yes, sir.
25:01Appreciate it.
25:02Have a good day, guys.
25:03Have a good shoot all day.
25:04This is hard to do.
25:06Communication.
25:07Listen to that spotter.
25:08Believing in him.
25:08Trust and being very decisive and precise.
25:11When he says clear, you have to do it immediately because that hole will dry up.
25:15Here we go.
25:16Gotta love this place, Kevin.
25:25Into the middle of the tri-oval.
25:28Start-finish line at Daytona International Speedway that this track was modeled after would be right here.
25:34But that's just the start of the restart zone at Talladega.
25:37Now they approach the start line and the green flag waves.
25:43And don't forget, with qualifying canceled yesterday, they haven't been in these cars one time this weekend.
25:55Hope it turns.
25:57Well, and right now, at the beginning of this race, you're going to probably feel the car bottom out when
26:01you get to the other end of the racetrack down here in three and four.
26:04Big bump where the haulers go across the racetrack.
26:07You'll see them come up on that right there.
26:11So, there it is.
26:12A big patch going across the racetrack.
26:15But these cars are going to bottom out a little bit.
26:16The drivers, I always was on edge just a little bit because I wasn't real sure what my car was
26:21going to do.
26:21And you know you have to hold it wide open.
26:29Down the short chute into the 18-degree banking of the tri-oval.
26:35And the track flattens out as you get to the start-finish line.
26:38Yeah, you see that third lane right there already starting to form up top.
26:43A whole bunch of cars up in the top.
26:45And I think as we see what these strategies are going to be for everybody to try to put themselves
26:49in a position as to what they want to do,
26:52it's going to all start to unfold.
26:55So, you see Austin Dillon.
26:56Who will pull up in front of it, right?
26:58Austin Dillon's pulling them, but the opportunity is coming for somebody in front of him.
27:01Do I go up there and block it and take the right?
27:07Yeah, those guys have come from the back of the pack.
27:10You know, Ross Chastain and, you know, a lot of those cars up in that top lane, Austin Dillon,
27:16all started towards the back of this pack, 24th for Ross Chastain.
27:21So, they've made their way to the front quickly.
27:24Austin Dillon from 18th to 5th on the outside.
27:28The pack of Chevy's behind him.
27:31Here he comes.
27:32He wants to lead this thing.
27:36And he sees two teammates down on the bottom down there, and you see Chase Briscoe actually pull out.
27:43I don't think that was on purpose.
27:46Either Denny got loose getting into the corner or something, and he moved up to keep from running him over.
27:53Denny Hamlin, who may 11, leads the first two laps with his teammate, Ty Gibbs, on his bumper.
28:01Middle lane, Toyota Chevy, outside lane, Chevys.
28:05Yeah, right now, that's as many, many cars in that top lane as you'll probably see here all day in
28:13that third lane.
28:14Now, one thing that that will do when you see it like this is making gridlock if they're three wide.
28:19Not really a chance for any momentum and, you know, a pull off of any other car for anybody else.
28:26It'll stall out.
28:27We've seen this before.
28:34Hamlin led that lap by inches, but here they come.
28:3912 rows deep, three wide.
28:51Now you got the gyro cam here.
28:53You really get a sense of how steep that banking is with this camera and Kyle Larson's car as we
28:59ride on board the Valvoline camera here.
29:02Yeah, look at that.
29:03Level right back out.
29:05And this part right here through the Tribal is actually pretty tricky, Clint.
29:08You know, that very bottom lane actually doesn't have as much banking.
29:11The car really will get light as you go through there if somebody's tucked up right behind you
29:17and the way that you transition in and out of that trial ball across straightaway.
29:21On the bottom lane, yeah.
29:22Now, Briscoe went up top, then came back down to cover,
29:25and in doing so, almost lost the lead to Austin Dillon, who's coming hard on the outside.
29:35See William Byron right there in a 24 in that middle lane right there behind his teammate Kyle Larson
29:40as you watch Briscoe kind of shoot out in that middle lane in front of the top and bottom lane.
29:48William Byron needs something to go, right, Mike?
29:51He's had a couple of weeks that have really been off of their expectations.
30:11There's Kyle Larson's radio.
30:23Keep an eye on that throttle percentage.
30:25This is the guy that's leading the middle line.
30:27Kyle Larson is only at 50.
30:29That's half throttle.
30:31Yeah.
30:32Even fuel.
30:32And I think right now, you know, everybody's trying to understand exactly what they need to do
30:37for this really odd length 98-lap first stage.
30:41And you know that they're going to have to make pit stops,
30:44and they're going to have to do all those things.
30:46And I think right now, everybody's playing that cat and mouse game
30:50as far as whether they can stop once, twice, whatever the strategy is.
30:55But I can promise you the one on the left is going to go further than the one on the
30:58right.
30:59Yeah.
31:02I think the math checks out, bud.
31:04And that's the hard part about, as we ride on board our poet cam here with Austin Dillon,
31:10that's the hard part about leading these lanes.
31:12Yeah, it's great, you know, for the three guys that are up here leading these lanes.
31:16But it is definitely not as efficient, is it, Larry?
31:19Yeah.
31:20To make this on one stop, remember, that was one of the options.
31:23You need to be about 55% to 60% throttle.
31:27And that's going to get you about 6.5 miles per gallon.
31:30The thing about it, every 15% of throttle to be reduced,
31:34that's another half mile per gallon that buys you over the course of the run.
31:38All right, that's at the front of the pack.
31:39So, obviously, they're doing that.
31:41Let's go back and look at SVG back here running clear at the back.
31:45Can he save any more gas?
31:46No, he cannot.
31:48And the reason, you want to be one car in front of him so that,
31:53really what you want is you want to be a few cars.
31:55You want to be right in the middle of that pack so you can have somebody,
31:58somebody else pushing you, though.
32:00And, you know, the thing.
32:02You've got to be careful not to lose that pack.
32:03That's my point.
32:03You've got to be careful.
32:05And it takes one mistake, and all of a sudden, you lose that whole pack.
32:09So, this is not easy to do.
32:12And when you're playing that game in the back of the pack like that,
32:16you take a big risk.
32:17All right.
32:17I know the price of gas is up all across the country,
32:20but Sunoco provides the race gas for these cars for free.
32:23So, Larry, give us the why.
32:25Why aren't you running full throttle right now?
32:27We don't care about fuel mileage.
32:29We're just trying to shorten up the next trip to pit road,
32:31the pit stop, to be able to dump less fuel in it.
32:34We don't care how mileage or fuel save it.
32:36It's about shortening up the next trip to pit road.
32:39And, in this instance, eliminating a pit stop.
32:42I mean, right?
32:43I mean, it's going to take a lot to eliminate this pit stop.
32:46Yeah, you've got to pretty much split it down the middle,
32:4849 laps of running this first stage,
32:50and that is a long way to go.
32:52Thank you.
32:56Eight laps complete at Talladega.
32:59Denny Hamlin's led five, Chase Briscoe two,
33:01and Austin Dillons led his first lap of this.
33:04Spectacle in racing now less than a month away.
33:06The 110th Indianapolis 500.
33:09Don't miss the pageantry tradition and excitement
33:12of the world's biggest race.
33:14Sunday, May 24th, on Fox.
33:18Here at Talladega, 11 laps complete.
33:21Knoxville, Tennessee's Chad Fincham
33:24has taken the Carl Long number 66
33:27to the front of this race.
33:29He began racing at age six.
33:32He was a Bandolero national champ.
33:34Won in ARCA in 2016,
33:36and this is his second start of the cup season.
33:39It's the first time he's led a cup race.
33:45Jamie.
33:46Listening to the frontrunners up there
33:47at 185 miles per hour,
33:50it's like a chess match right now,
33:51and on the radio,
33:52the spotter for Denny Hamlin, Chris Lambert,
33:55he told him,
33:56you're going to need to pick it up just a little bit.
33:58The outside line is forming.
33:59They're gaining more power.
34:01They're coming to your outside.
34:03They also told him how many cars are behind him,
34:05so the drivers want to know what's forming
34:08and how hard they need to push.
34:09Certainly not 100% throttle up front yet.
34:12Oh, Briscoe's got his work cut out for him.
34:14Did you see him slow that line down?
34:16And here comes Cody Ware on the outside.
34:19It was Ware who spun
34:21and put last week's race into overtime,
34:24but team manager Tommy Baldwin
34:26said during the week that was on him.
34:28They left him out on track on 60-lap tires,
34:32tires that might be good for 40 laps,
34:34just trying to get to the finish.
34:36So that was on the team manager.
34:39Cody Ware, I think,
34:40is one of the best improved drivers
34:42over these last couple of seasons,
34:45wasting on limited resources.
34:47And he's got a chance to show you what he can do
34:50as he works his way to the front in the 51.
34:56Yeah, and you see right there,
34:57that right rear tire just basically ran out of tread
35:00and blew out.
35:02When that car has the look of going up the racetrack
35:06like it looked like it was going to do,
35:07you have to throw the caution
35:09when the whole field is coming around the racetrack.
35:11That's right.
35:13So here's Ware on the outside with Austin Dillon.
35:17Chase Briscoe in the middle,
35:18Chad Fincham leading the group on the bottom.
35:21Two of the three have come from the back of the field
35:24to the front, as you see.
35:25One thing I was wondering with Chase Briscoe right there,
35:28Clem, in the scenario that we're in,
35:31why do you keep changing lanes?
35:33You know, you want to...
35:34I know he's trying to block and do all those things,
35:37but, you know, with everybody trying to position themselves
35:39from a strategy standpoint at this point,
35:42it seems like you just want to pick a lane and stick with it.
35:44And when you're doing that,
35:46it's causing you to put the throttle down
35:48and use more fuel.
35:50I agree.
35:51Ride in line, pick your percentage,
35:52and that way it helps the crew chief know exactly,
35:55definitively, exactly where we're at fuel mileage-wise.
35:57You saw Christopher Bell in the 20.
36:00Zane Smith in the 38.
36:03All trying to race toward the front.
36:05Here comes A.J. Allmendinger on the bottom in the 16.
36:10And Daniel Dye driving the 78 for B.J. McLeod, Larry.
36:14Yeah, Mike, the Toyotas are being told
36:16we need to pick the pace up a little bit.
36:18But remember, if you want to do this on one stop
36:21and you want to only dump one can,
36:23you need to have 28 laps of this stage, 90 to 100%.
36:32Xfinity cam on board Bubba Wallace.
36:40And you can see right there, there's just, there's
36:43the traffic, Clint, the congestion
36:45and from the driver's seat can be so frustrating
36:49when you know you have a really good race car
36:51and you look around and there's nowhere to go
36:53and your options, and especially with this car,
36:55when everything gets packed up
36:57and you're at the back of the, at the back of the field
37:00like Bubba is right now,
37:02at some point you're going to have to play
37:04that track position game
37:05and get yourself towards the front of this pack.
37:07We've got a breakaway.
37:08Eight cars at the front of the field
37:10have taken off.
37:12Single file.
37:14We may be separated into two packs
37:16by the time we come back.
37:18Sixteen laps complete at Talladega.
37:26NASCAR on Fox is sponsored by
37:28Progressive Insurance.
37:30Revving up the savings on home and auto insurance.
37:35Twenty laps to go next time by.
37:37Seven drivers have raced away from the field.
37:40It includes three of the Joe Gibbs Toyotas
37:42plus John Hunter Nemechek,
37:43both of the Richard Childress Racing Chevrolets
37:46plus Cody Wareham.
37:47Yeah, that's, you know,
37:48and you can go and talk about all the strategy
37:52and all the things that happened
37:53in the cat and mouse game
37:54and the repositioning of everything,
37:57but that's the part that I was excited about for today.
37:59We were like, oh man,
38:01now we're going to see what we saw before.
38:04And then all of a sudden,
38:05these seven or eight cars out front
38:07that decided to pick up the pace,
38:09they have forced the whole field now
38:11to pick up the pace
38:12and all that fuel saving is out the window.
38:18Let's check with Regan.
38:20Well, Mike, to you guys' point,
38:22I don't remember a race
38:23that I've had more conversations
38:24with the crew chiefs
38:25about having to be fluid today,
38:27having to change plans
38:28at just midstream as they go.
38:29One of those,
38:30Ryan Priest's crew chief,
38:31Derek Finley,
38:32he told me today
38:33we may have to be more reactive
38:35than we've ever been before.
38:36Take a listen to this radio.
38:37His plans may be getting ready to change.
38:40We just need to know
38:41what our team plan is going to be
38:43as these guys have a burden
38:45to start pushing feet.
38:46So if we need to go,
38:48you're just going to have to keep relaying me.
38:49Or if you want me to sneak on,
38:51I'll sneak on.
38:51Yeah, we're right there
38:52with all the boards.
38:54Don't want to do anything different right now.
38:55We've got all of our friends with us.
38:56We will relay
38:57if there's any change there.
38:59Well, he's certainly got the right sponsor
39:01if you're going to try to sneak up
39:03on the competition,
39:04building submarines.
39:08I can tell you this.
39:10I know they're talking about
39:10not wanting to do anything different,
39:12but fact of the matter is
39:14they are doing something different
39:15to keep up with that front pack
39:16because they picked up three seconds.
39:18I think they forced their hand, right?
39:20Yeah.
39:21From 17th to 22nd
39:23is where most of those Fords are.
39:25Let's go up front to Denny Hamlin
39:27and listen in on his radio.
39:29We don't need to worry about
39:30underpegging each other.
39:32We just need to all run it out here.
39:45You know, guys,
39:47I've been doing this broadcasting 26 years
39:50and in 18 years as a crew chief,
39:51I have never, to Regan Smith,
39:53seen a playbook this big
39:55for one 500-mile race.
39:57But to Regan's point,
39:58I talked to Alan Gustafson,
40:00Chase Elliott's crew chief,
40:01the winningest crew chief,
40:02active in the garage area.
40:03He said, Larry,
40:04everybody in here came here with a plan.
40:06We have no idea if our plan's right,
40:08but we have to be smart enough
40:10to adjust based on the competition.
40:13Well, that's what's fun about it
40:14is, you know,
40:15trying to outfox the competitors,
40:17and those competitors
40:18are usually manufacturers,
40:19and then within your own walls
40:22that's your organization,
40:23whether it be Gibbs or 2311,
40:26they know they're united,
40:29Hendrick, Penske.
40:30Well, the cool part about it,
40:32to me, Clint,
40:32is that they made this stage so weird,
40:37and now everybody's got
40:39these different theories,
40:40and you see all these different things
40:42that are going to play out down the road,
40:43so I love that.
40:44Well, here's a different theory
40:45from that Rockstar Energy drink cam
40:47on board Tyler Reddick.
40:48He started on pole.
40:49He has faded back to 37th place,
40:52but he has the Xfinity fastest lap
40:55of the race at 192.3.
41:00The big question right now is
41:02when will they pit,
41:04and how long will they have
41:06to be stopped for?
41:11I've been watching Carson Josevar,
41:13who's radioed into his team
41:15thinking he might have an issue
41:16with that car.
41:17He had a hand out the window
41:19just a moment ago here,
41:21but did not choose to come to pit road.
41:23Let's go to the pits.
41:25Well, Mike, that 77 car,
41:26he's been complaining about
41:27how loose it is for Carson Josevar
41:29right now since the start of the race.
41:31A few laps back said
41:32the ride quality's gone.
41:33I think I might have a tire going down,
41:35but I can tell you
41:35from the pits right now,
41:36the team is not getting ready.
41:37It doesn't appear that they're going
41:38to try to come to pit road,
41:39so maybe going to try to ride this out
41:41just as long as he can.
41:42Thanks, Regan.
41:43Now, a couple of trends have developed here.
41:4523-11 started up front.
41:47They're all way in the back,
41:49so are the front row Fords.
41:51They're fast here,
41:52but they're out back.
41:53Well, the Gibbs Toyotas,
41:56you can see are right up front
41:58along with the RCR Chevrolets
42:00and the Collegg cars,
42:02so strategies are starting to show themselves.
42:05Basically calling that garage area
42:07my home on Friday.
42:08I got a feeling that some manufacturers
42:10were even in this first stage
42:12looking and maybe doing different agendas.
42:16Regan?
42:17Well, Mike, one strategy that I know
42:19that a crew chief doesn't ever want to hear
42:21is what's going on with the 45 of Tyler Reddick
42:23right now just a few laps to go.
42:25Take a listen to what he radioed to the team
42:27as the pace started to pick up.
42:46It's always weird when the cars are spread apart like this
42:49and then you get some spacing
42:50and then you get somebody behind you
42:53and you pull up.
42:54And I don't know, Clint,
42:56I think a lot of that is probably
42:57just the way that the wind is buffeting around
43:00in the scenario that we're in right now
43:02because the pace is actually up pretty high
43:05as we ride on board our Toyota racing cam
43:07right here with Riley Herbst.
43:08So you see Reddick back there.
43:11But listen to the pitch of that car
43:14and you hear that
43:15and you get used to that pitch
43:17and when you're
43:18the air is moving around
43:19and those runs are coming at you
43:21in a different way
43:22that scenario you were talking about
43:23that pitch changes
43:24and when you hear that
43:26you think immediately
43:27something's wrong with this engine.
43:29And I always told him
43:30my engine ran bad anyway.
43:33Why?
43:34Well, I wanted a better engine.
43:36Okay.
43:36We had to keep them on their toes.
43:38The squeaky wheel gets a green, right?
43:39Yeah, keep them working, so.
43:41I always told him my engine was
43:42engine was terrible.
43:43You must have been such a treat
43:45to drive for.
43:46Well, fire pit crews, engine builders.
43:49We got to keep them.
43:50We got to keep everything high level.
43:52Hey, it worked.
43:57Denny Hamlin started third.
43:59Chase Briscoe fifth.
44:00Ty Gibbs ninth.
44:01And John Hunter Nemechek 23rd.
44:03Those are the four Toyotas out front.
44:05Then the Chevys.
44:07Cody Ware, Kyle Busch, Austin Dillon
44:10and Ty Dillon and A.J.
44:12Allmendinger for calling.
44:13So five Chevys in a row behind them.
44:16Though there's a gap
44:17that that second group
44:19is trying to fill right now.
44:23Yeah, and when you get those,
44:25let's see, there's seven cars
44:26in that front group.
44:28Seven, eight, nine cars
44:30right around there
44:31is about where you can optimize
44:33the cars being able
44:34to have the maximum speed
44:37to where you don't have
44:38that accordion effect.
44:39So that first group's
44:40got a nice number of cars
44:41in it to be able to do that.
44:45You start seeing them pit crews
44:47get up, get stretched,
44:48get their helmets on
44:49and on the ready.
44:49Tells me,
44:51action's fixing to pick up
44:53on pit road.
44:54For some of them.
44:55And let's face it,
44:57and we've talked about this
44:58with Ryan Blaney's team
44:59and so many other teams
45:00as we've gone through
45:01the first part of the season.
45:03Today, I mean,
45:03there's a great possibility
45:05that this whole first stage
45:06runs green.
45:07So you make a mistake
45:08on pit road,
45:08you're going to put your...
