My first review for Watch This Space. I reviewed the music autobiopic of the rap group Kneecap.

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED: August 27th 2024

RUMINATIONS: Ah, the first video, while I still think the film is good the review still has the teething issues you'd except when starting on the video creation journey. The audio is also low, which is an issue I think I fixed with the next video.

00:10One of the most prominent music channels recently is the music biopic, but this year
00:14built in four prominent ones. The one I'm reviewing is about the Northern Irish rap
00:18group Kneecap, a group of Republican rappers who have caused notoriety due to their lyrics
00:22that aren't that sympathetic to the British and that their verses are in the Irish language.
00:26Unlike the other biopics mentioned, this film doesn't have big names or
00:29up-and-coming actors taking roles of the rap group, but they play themselves in a manner
00:33similar to the Beatles movies from the 60s, but have more druggies. Set during the late
00:382010s, the film is a fictionalised retelling of the group's origins as young people living
00:41in Belfast in the aftermath of the Trouble and having to deal with the lingering issues still
00:45prevalent. NALC's father, played by Michael Fassbender, is a former IRA member who is still
00:49on the run from the authorities. Liam has repeated run-ins with the police and a confusing relationship
00:54with a Protestant girl, and JJ is having a lot to lead a double life as the group's DJ and
00:58as a teacher at an Irish language school whose girlfriend is campaigned to get the Irish
01:01language recognised by the Northern Irish government. The film's themes of language
01:06and cultural identity is strong in this film, with the morals of the film being about how
01:09it's important to remember what came before, but also trying to move on and create a new
01:13heritage. We see that through the group's personal struggles, often with them clashing
01:17with the police, distant Republican groups, and their own personal family issues as well,
01:21which has all played out well. Also, this film is funny. I didn't want to pay the lead on
01:25this, but while the film is filled with a lot of weighty themes and ideas, it still finds
01:30times to be funny and creative, so it isn't all weight with a lot of issues. Again, like
01:34the aforementioned Beatles films, where they often went into surreal vignettes, this film
01:39has a chaotic and darkly fun comedic energy that goes down great with a crowd, especially
01:43one surprising cameo. My one complaint is that the ending is a bit abrupt, with one sequence
01:48which is supposed to be tense, and not succeeding in that area because, well, the people involved
01:53are alive and playing themselves in the film. Otherall, E-Cut App is a fun and energetic
01:58good time at the movies, and a fun little antidote to those who might have gone tired of the
02:02Formula 8 Whale Pickman movie. Go seek this out.
