00:19Welcome back to our cruise through some of the dreamiest locations in the western Mediterranean.
00:24Our home is Emerald Sakara and isn't she just beautiful?
00:35After exploring the best of the French Riviera, this is really the celebration of water coming here to Marseille.
00:41Yeah, exactly, yeah, yeah.
00:42Wow, it's stunning.
00:44Our Emerald Cruises adventure will this week take us from Corsica across to Rome,
00:49before looping back to Nice for side trips to Cannes and Antigua.
00:56We start this week in Bonifacio, a dramatic clifftop town on Corsica's southern edge.
01:06The famous postcard view of the Bonifacio, the white cliffs and the blue sea, well, all sorts of hues of
01:15blue.
01:16And, well, the view is also very important to the history of the fortress.
01:20Actually, that's how it got the title of the most impregnable fortress of the Mediterranean,
01:26as it's dominating the Straits of Bonifacio.
01:29And that was one of the most important strategic maritime passages of the Mediterranean.
01:36Bonifacio was founded in the 9th century, making it one of Corsica's oldest towns
01:41and a place where time is all about perspective.
01:44The part of the fortress wall that you are seeing here is one of the youngest constructions.
01:51It's just half a millennium old.
01:53Nothing is less than two centuries old anyhow.
01:57So everything in Corsica that is old, especially in Bonifacio,
02:01so usually if it's just two, three centuries old, it's the new stuff.
02:05Oh, the new stuff, just two centuries.
02:07Two centuries.
02:08True.
02:10Bonifacio's dramatic setting makes it one of the most visually striking Corsican towns.
02:15But this is an island defined by contrast.
02:18Corsica has been always named the island of beauty,
02:21as it's not just beautiful but extremely diversely beautiful.
02:25And in all senses, we have extremely diverse nature and geology.
02:29The island's contrasts go far beyond its landscapes.
02:35Once a poor fishing town, Bonifacio is now one of Europe's most exclusive addresses.
02:41Here we have one of the rare preserved house front of the 1300s that survived till nowadays
02:50and was not cemented over in the 20th century.
02:54That was the case of the majority of the houses.
02:59And Corsica used to be extremely poor in the 20th century.
03:02And now, on the contrary, it's the most expensive place in France to live in.
03:08What a contrast.
03:08Like 20th century, one of the poorest, and now one of the most expensive.
03:12Yeah, with Tahiti, actually.
03:14We're officially number one.
03:15Corsica and Tahiti are the most expensive places to live in France nowadays.
03:25From humble beginnings to high-end living,
03:28the greatest gifts of Corsica are still proudly homegrown.
03:36Corsica's unique geography and multi-layered history
03:39It's wonderful.
03:40have made its cuisine one of the island's greatest obsessions.
03:44Corsicans are a very particular nation.
03:47They're the only mountain people in the middle of the Mediterranean.
03:50Plus, the fact that we have a great number of endemic spaces and subspaces
03:57that are the very big part of local gastronomy.
04:00Plus, because of the historical influences,
04:04you've got French gastronomy,
04:08Italian gastronomy,
04:09and Corsican gastronomy.
04:12And because Corsica is an island,
04:14they can contain it,
04:15and it's all just here,
04:16and it's your special recipes.
04:18Exactly.
04:19Yes.
04:19That's the...
04:20Well, I think we need to...
04:21The unique one.
04:23Salute to that one.
04:24Salute.
04:25Salute.
04:26Salute.
04:31I love cheese cheese.
04:33Salute.
04:33Salute.
04:33Oh, hi.
04:36Salute.
04:36Salute.
04:36Back on board,
04:37you can rely on Emerald Sakara
04:39to keep the focus on great food
04:41at its main restaurant,
04:42La Cocina.
04:44The food on board
04:46is every bit as tasty
04:47and delicious
04:48as you would imagine
04:49on a superyacht.
04:50But honestly,
04:51it's the setting
04:52that's the star of the show.
04:53the cool breeze, the sea air, and that ever-changing view.
05:05After the break, we're travelling down one of the oldest roads in the world.
05:10Is that what this is the saying comes from,
05:13all roads lead to Rome?
05:14Indeed.
05:25Welcome back to our Emerald Cruises trip
05:28around the Western Mediterranean aboard Emerald Saqqara.
05:34From our starting point in Nice,
05:37long regarded as the capital of the French Riviera,
05:40we've now hit the Italian coast to spend a day
05:42in one of the most visited cities on the planet.
05:49Rome is a city where modern life and busy streets
05:52sit side by side with the ancient
05:54and where historic monuments are found at every turn.
06:08I find it incredible that we are standing outside the walls of Rome.
06:13Yes, it's really in very good condition,
06:16a third century old city wall.
06:19In Scottsdale, still today, the same length as once,
06:2419 kilometres and 284 watchtowers.
06:28We are very close to two of them.
06:31And if they still go all the way around?
06:33Yes, all the way around the historical centre.
06:36We can consider the Aurelian city walls
06:40like a sort of a border
06:42between the ancient city of Rome and the modern city.
06:46And how long did it take to build?
06:48Four years.
06:49Stop it.
06:50Yeah, sure.
06:51Modern builders can't build a bridge or a tunnel in that time.
06:54Yeah, you are right.
06:54But there were much better engineers than ours today.
06:58And these walls were built
07:00to defend the city by the barbarian invasions.
07:07Beyond Rome's walls lies a road
07:09that once connected the city
07:10to the far reaches of its empire.
07:13It's the Appian Way
07:15and was first started in 312 BC.
07:18We are along the ancient Roman consular way
07:22that is in fact called Regina Viarium,
07:27the Queen of Order roads.
07:31While highways now do the job a lot faster,
07:34the road still fulfils its original purpose.
07:37Is that what this is,
07:38the saying comes from,
07:39all roads lead to Rome?
07:41Indeed, indeed.
07:42That's the reason why we have this sentence,
07:45you know,
07:46very well known,
07:47no love in the world, yeah.
07:48And how many kilometres is it?
07:50So it is about 450 kilometres.
07:55These days,
07:56the Appian Way
07:57is a peaceful stretch of road
07:59to be enjoyed by cyclists and hikers.
08:01Is this the chariot wheel line?
08:03Yeah, this is the chariot wheel lines.
08:05But the well-worn chariot wheel lines
08:07are a reminder
08:08of the centuries of history
08:10carved into its stones.
08:16From Rome,
08:17it's back on board
08:18our luxury super yacht
08:20for some downtime by the pool.
08:26As we soak up the comfort,
08:28Emerald Saqqara cruises us
08:30back to the island of Corsica.
08:41Such a beautiful day.
08:43The sun's shining,
08:44the water's clear,
08:45and this is a really good walkway
08:46for stretching your legs
08:47after coming off the ship.
08:49Yes, indeed.
08:50And we are now in Bastia,
08:52just at the feet of the citadel of it
08:54in front of Italy.
08:58Bastia sits on the northeast coast of Corsica.
09:01The island has been under French control
09:03since 1768,
09:05but has a distinctly Italian flavour,
09:08a legacy of over five centuries
09:10under Genoese rule.
09:12So they decided to settle here
09:14to administrate all Corsica
09:18from Bastia,
09:19and Bastia became the capital
09:21for five centuries,
09:23from the end of the 14th century
09:24to the 18th century.
09:26And they did that from this palace here?
09:28And they built this palace
09:31that is nowadays
09:33the museum of art
09:35and history of Bastia.
09:37And so they had this position
09:38to look over all of Bastia.
09:40Yes, absolutely,
09:41to control the situation
09:42and to control
09:43all these parts of the Mediterranean.
09:50From the citadel,
09:51it's just a short stroll
09:52back down to the port,
09:54once the lifeblood of the city.
09:56There's so many beautiful buildings here,
09:59assuming this is the old port?
10:00Yes, this is the old port.
10:02This is the original port of Bastia.

11:01After the break,
11:02we're in beautiful Antigua.
11:04It's a town that's both relaxed
11:06and just a little bit fancy.
11:27There's something special
11:29about mornings at sea
11:31aboard Emerald Sakara.
11:35Where the day begins with a morning
11:37cuppa on your private balcony,
11:38a lazy lie-in,
11:40or maybe a spot of yoga on the deck.
11:45After a week-long loop
11:47covering some of the best ports
11:48in the Western Mediterranean,
11:50we're back where we started,
11:51at the gateway to the Riviera
11:53in Nice.
11:58From here,
11:59it's a half-hour drive south to Antigua,
12:01a port that blends the best of the region
12:04in one stop.
12:14Antigua is that sweet spot
12:15on the French Riviera
12:16where old-world charm
12:18meets superyacht glamour.
12:19You've got cobbled streets,
12:21a vibrant market,
12:22and sandy beaches,
12:23all with the backdrop
12:24of the biggest marina in Europe.
12:26It's a town that's both relaxed
12:28and just a little bit fancy.
12:33Antigua has been a port town
12:35since ancient times,
12:36from its beginnings
12:37as a Greek trading post
12:39to the busy marina it is today.
12:43It remains a working harbour at heart,
12:45just on a much grander scale.
12:48We're sitting here
12:50looking at the marina
12:51that really shaped Antigua.
12:53Yes.
12:54In the past,
12:55it was a border town,
12:57so France needed to protect
13:00his border
13:01against the Italians in Nice.
13:03So it was a military port,
13:06but then after the Second World War,
13:08the American billionaires
13:09discovered this marina.
13:12That's why it became
13:14the largest of Europe.
13:17While Antigua's become known
13:19for its impressive marina,
13:21its real charm lies beyond it
13:23in the cobbled streets
13:24of the old town.
13:29This is such a pretty town
13:32with a big energy,
13:33but it feels really calm.
13:36That's my favourite town
13:38in the French Riviera
13:39because it's authentic.
13:46One of its biggest draw cards
13:47both for locals and tourists
13:49is its open-air market.
13:58There's so much energy
13:59in this market.
14:01You can just feel the vibe.
14:02It's busy.
14:02Everyone's buying
14:03all their local produce
14:04for the day.
14:05Yes.
14:06Love it.
14:06That's why you have
14:07these incredible tomatoes,
14:09olives varieties.
14:11The local ones
14:13are the small ones.
14:14They're so-called
14:16misquas from Nice.
14:18They are really famous
14:19for ordering olives.
14:21Which one do you recommend?
14:24Green olives and basil.
14:25From there.
14:28Merci.
14:32They are really good.
14:36Those are from Nice.
14:38From Nice,
14:39so they're the special ones.
14:40Yeah, absolutely.
14:41There's so much flavour
14:43in that little bite.
14:45It's really nice.
14:47The covered market hall
14:49as it stands today
14:50was built in the 1920s
14:52and a century on
14:53it remains the heart
14:54of daily life here.
14:56Oh, this is my heaven
14:58right now.
14:59Don't worry about all the food.
15:00Just give me
15:00all the different teas.
15:02I've got some
15:03for the morning,
15:04some for by the poolside,
15:05some to go to sleep,
15:06relax.
15:08Mmm.
15:09From market stalls
15:10to masterpieces,
15:12just around the corner
15:13is the Picasso Museum,
15:15which once served
15:16as the studio
15:17and inspiration
15:18for the artist himself.
15:26There is so much artwork here,
15:28but is it true
15:29Picasso didn't spend
15:30a lot of time here?
15:32That's true.
15:32He produced many,
15:35many, many paintings
15:36here this brief time.
15:38He was already
15:39an old man,
15:40so he needed
15:41to a place
15:42where it was peaceful.
15:44But it was very
15:45a rich period.
15:47He was inspired
15:48by this magnificent view
15:50on the sea.
15:51Housed in a former castle,
15:53the historic Chateau Grimaldi,
15:54the museum holds
15:56around 245
15:57of Picasso's works.
16:00The colour
16:01and the subjects
16:02are so different
16:03from what you imagine
16:04from Picasso.
16:05Yes.
16:05He found
16:06that the natural beauty
16:07of the area
16:08was giving him peace.
16:11You can see it
16:13in this painting,
16:14La Joie de Vibro.
16:15You can really feel
16:16the joy in it
16:17and the sense of playfulness
16:18that's in this artwork,
16:19especially.
16:20Yes.
16:26After the break,
16:27we're in Cannes
16:28where the Riviera
16:29meets the red carpet.
16:31Lights, camera,
16:32action, that's it.
16:33Thank you, thank you.
16:34Sorry, sorry.
16:36Oh!
16:41Lights, camera,
16:42action, that's it.
16:56After a week
16:57exploring the
16:58western Mediterranean
16:59aboard the luxury
17:00super yacht
17:01Emerald Saqqara,
17:02we're docked
17:03in Nice.
17:07From here,
17:08it's just under
17:09an hour's drive
17:10to Cannes
17:12where the Riviera
17:13meets the red carpet.
17:16I can't believe
17:17we're here
17:17on the steps
17:19of where
17:19the Cannes Film Festival is.
17:21Yes, you are
17:21on the red carpet.
17:23Today,
17:23it's not a long carpet
17:24like it is normally
17:25in May
17:26during the 12 days
17:27of the Film Festival.
17:30And you can see
17:31all the movie stars
17:32coming here.
17:34So why do you think
17:34Cannes was chosen
17:35for the Film Festival?
17:37Because it's not
17:37very far from Italy.
17:39The place is lovely,
17:41a marvelous light
17:42and a good weather.
17:43You've got the beach,
17:44the croissettes
17:45with very elegant
17:46hotels,
17:47welcome movie stars
17:48and it's a place
17:49to be.
17:50It's French Riviera,
17:51Côte d'Azur.
17:52So it's the most
17:53glamour place
17:54to do a film festival,
17:55I think.
17:56Well, I think
17:56it's a glamorous place
17:57to get a photo.
17:58So will we go down
17:59and walk the red carpet?
18:00Let's go.
18:01Finally it's happened
18:03to me right in front
18:04of my face,
18:05my feelings can describe it.
18:08Thank you, thank you.
18:10Sorry, sorry.
18:12Here we are.
18:18While the glamour
18:19of the Film Fest
18:20is an annual event,
18:21Cannes shines
18:22all year round.
18:24Especially along
18:25La Croisette,
18:26the city's
18:27seafront promenade.
18:29You just seem
18:30to walk
18:30a little bit
18:31more elegant
18:31walking on
18:32the most famous
18:33promenade in Cannes
18:34or the world.
18:35Yes, sure.
18:36This is one of the
18:37most famous promenades
18:38in the world.
18:39It's three kilometres long.
18:42These days
18:43it's world-renowned
18:44as a playground
18:45for the rich and famous.
18:46But like Antibes,
18:48Cannes came
18:48from much
18:49humbler beginnings.
18:50In the past
18:51it was only
18:52fisherman boats
18:53and nowadays
18:54there are big yachts.
18:56Super yachts.
18:57Super yachts.
18:59And when you're ready
19:01to swap the coast
19:01for the country,
19:02a half hour inland
19:04is Grasse,
19:05the perfume capital
19:06of the world.
19:08It's the only place
19:10to become a perfumer
19:11is France.
19:12You have four schools
19:14only and they are
19:15all in France
19:16and Grasse
19:17has got the famous
19:19rose,
19:20My Rose
19:20that we use
19:21to make the famous
19:22perfume number five,
19:24Chanel.
19:25Oh, I love that one.
19:26And we have as well
19:27a really good
19:28jasmine flower.
19:30We cultivate
19:31the jasmine in grass.
19:32They are the two
19:33flowers of the city.
19:36Many perfumeries
19:38call grass home
19:38but Fragonard
19:40is perhaps
19:40its most iconic.
19:42This is one
19:43of the 40 factories
19:44we've got in grass.
19:45This is one
19:46of the oldest one
19:47and the most
19:47beautiful one.
19:49Fragonard
19:49has been operating
19:50since the 1920s
19:52and takes visitors
19:53through the entire process.
19:55Scented water,
19:56essential oils.
19:57Giving a greater
19:58appreciation
19:59of the science
20:00and skill
20:00behind the art
20:01of perfume making.
20:03To create perfumes
20:04people have to study
20:05at least five years
20:06of theory
20:07in a special school.
20:09It's a lot of theory
20:09and chemistry.
20:11Wow.
20:11And after
20:12they have to
20:13practice another
20:14five more years
20:15at least.
20:16Oh my goodness
20:16they could be a doctor.
20:17Yeah.
20:18Fortunately
20:19Fragonard offer
20:20a fast track experience
20:21where you can blend
20:22and bottle
20:23a scent of your own.
20:25This is
20:26base note
20:27and ingredients
20:29that are
20:29in the base note
20:31are the most
20:32heavy one
20:33and this is
20:34the part
20:35that remains
20:35on you
20:36after some hours
20:38after you've
20:38sprayed
20:39the perfume
20:40on yourself.
20:41That's the
20:42enticing fragrance.
20:43The one hour
20:44workshop
20:45walks visitors
20:46through the
20:46basics of
20:47perfume composition
20:48from top notes
20:49to base.
20:50Oh that's pretty.
20:52The mix
20:53that you've
20:53created here
20:54is really
20:55getting close
20:57to what it's
20:57really hit
20:58in the field
20:59so well done.
20:59Oh my goodness.
21:01Can we call it
21:01the blaze?
21:02Let's do that.
21:03That's my last name.
21:04Blaze number five.
