02:37him he presents an unusual defense we're all human beings and we're going to see unbelievable this guy

02:49a team of police professionals in north dallas has one goal
02:53take down online predators before they harm a real child child predators are everywhere online

03:08rate this team is opening its case files for the first time to show you how it tracks them down
03:17all right it's coming this way and brings them to justice by any means necessary
03:25this is detective tony godwin and his team is
03:29the predator hunters
03:33december 13th 2012 tony's team pursues a suspect along a highway in north dallas
03:41tony believes the driver of this pickup is a determined predator that he first encountered just hours earlier
03:51but he's been unable to make a positive id
03:55is this tony's suspect or is the real predator still on the loose
04:04rodney thompson this is the fastest takedown i've ever conducted
04:11from first contact to his arrest was under four hours we didn't know we had the right guy
04:16till we actually arrested him we had to act rapidly and really think creatively to catch this predator
04:34it's christmas time of 2012 and i'm on the internet trolling around looking for someone to hit on me
04:39in 2012 all the kids were in these yahoo chat rooms just to talk to people and and do so
04:45with a bit of
04:45anonymity problem was these rooms were littered with predatory types i set up a profile under the
04:53name britney a 14 year old girl from texas i use images of a colleague of mine who has provided
04:58me
04:59consent to use her photographs in these undercover cases once i get the profile established i go into
05:05a room called texas 2 and i just sit and wait within a couple minutes i get a direct message
05:16the user's name is ryche0426 imagine my surprise what does he want to know from me how old i am
05:27i let him know right away i'm 14 but i'll be 15 soon this is where he should say hey
05:34i'm really
05:34sorry you're too young thanks for your time be careful there's a lot of weirdos here but that's
05:39not what happens he replies back that he's 38. he doesn't seem to have a care in the world that
05:46he's
05:46talking to a child i don't think his name is mike it's a big difference from the username so i'm
05:56guessing that's probably not true he sends a request for me to accept his webcam i accept i might get
06:03a
06:03good visual of what he looks like he's a white male late 30s early 40s kind of going bald he's
06:12got
06:12wire rim glasses on but the weird thing is this guy has no shirt on right off the bat i'm
06:19not going
06:19to turn my webcam on but i said i would give him a photo so i send pictures of britney
06:23as i promised
06:28he then escalates saying send me a sexy picture i'm not doing that
06:36nice try i need him to be very clear what his true intentions really are so i send him a
06:44message
06:44and he replies right back
06:48typically an investigation like this can go on for several weeks
06:52but we're 40 minutes into this conversation this guy's asking if we can meet up and go shopping
06:57together this guy's on fire i've never had one move this fast
07:06over the next hour things escalate pretty quickly he asks if i have any interest in penises
07:16i'm a grown man a big dude married with kids no i don't want to see your penis but i'm
07:29going to see your penis in penises thank you very much sir you've just committed a crime transfer
07:32obscene material to a liner i feel almost obligated to reply back and so i make some
07:37sort of compliment about the size the next thing i know he starts masturbating all unbelievable
07:46evidence because i'm screen recording everything that he's doing
07:54then he tells me something that really changes everything
08:00he's got access to kids the urgency of this thing just went up big time i want to know more
08:07so i asked
08:08him about this family he has a son and a daughter his daughter is 14. this guy's talking sexually to
08:17this
08:1714 year old profile of mine when he has a daughter the same age that's a big problem i need
08:23to act
08:23fast to make something happen and get this guy in custody i know that if we're friends on yahoo chat
08:29rooms
08:29there's a chance i could see more biographical information so i suggest we add each other boom he accepts
08:35it and i was right i get to see now a full name mike johnson i need to try to
08:41find out some information
08:42information so i ask him what's your favorite car
08:48very nice information thank you for that
08:53tony enlist detective clint mcnear to unmask mike johnson
08:59we have some very important pieces of information we have an age
09:05he's 38 years old we know that he has two children their ages are 12 and 14. we know we
09:13have a possible
09:14name mike johnson
09:19and lastly he drives a chevy
09:23i take all the information that we have i put it in the police database and i end up with
09:28a big fat zero
09:30which tells me mike johnson is probably a fake name our predators lied to us
09:38i'm kind of hunting blind in my mind this guy is an immediate danger to children
09:44i have no idea who this guy is where this guy is but his enthusiasm is something i think i
09:50can really
10:01exploit
10:01i suggest the movie theater it's a really good location because it's got a lot of visibility
10:08and it's easy for him to find
10:1112 30 only gives me like 90 minutes to put together an operation that's probably the fastest this has
10:18ever happened in my entire career clint races to devise the takedown plan
10:27this is a satellite view of the theater there's a sporting goods store next door tony is parked in
10:34an unmarked vehicle here where he can get to the theater quickly as well as see the entire front view
10:42i only have a picture of this guy and i have what i believe is a vehicle he uses but
10:47not much else to
10:47go on there are so many things that can go wrong with this takedown he could spot one of our
10:53covert
10:53cars he could see some of our surveillance he could just get spooked and chicken out we have this entire
11:01theater surrounded to manage the situation and to get him into custody we're in place we're waiting we're
11:07taking him down tony's team prepares a high risk takedown at a north texas movie theater
11:17all tony has to go on is a grainy image of the predator
11:23and a description of his vehicle everybody hold tight
11:28i don't see this guy out in front of the theater then i get a report from my surveillance team
11:34a person matching the suspect's description has gone inside a sporting goods store
11:39my first thought is is he trying to lure us out from where we're sitting we've got to process this
11:43quickly still while being concealed and not not getting burned you're trying to make split second
11:48decisions i could order a team to move in but we have yet to get a hundred percent visual
11:54on his face to confirm he's the guy in our photo it could be anybody and so we just sit
12:01and wait
12:03the man makes a purchase and heads for the exit the surveillance team see him leaving the store
12:09and walking back towards the truck i don't know what is going on at this point and then the worst
12:15case scenario happens his truck drives off and he leaves i have a decision to make do we stay or
12:21do we go
12:24tony tells us go get him
12:28tony and clint follow the suspect's vehicle onto the highway we still don't know at this point if
12:34it's an innocent civilian or a dangerous predator we can't just simply pull this guy over we have to
12:40have a reason and then we get a stroke of luck he's got a brake light that's out bam we've
12:47got a lawful
12:47reason to get this guy pulled over we get him pulled over on this traffic violation but is this
12:59the guy that we've been looking for they ask him to step out it's a guy in the photo that
13:08tony's sent
13:10he's not asking you know what the hell's going on why are you stopping me i get his driver's license
13:17do you have anything in your pocket that you need to know about
13:21we finally have a real name rodney thompson
13:29this is the fastest meet and takedown i've ever had my entire career it's only been a total of
13:35four hours since i initially communicated with this guy and here he is in handcuffs it's a really good
13:49feeling going into this interview i have no idea if this guy's going to lie to me or tell me
13:57the
14:13truth man you don't get that very often the guy who tells you the law almost verbatim for what it
14:21is
14:27probably i i wasn't interested in intercourse i'm not saying that nothing else could have happened
14:32it probably would have happened i'm going to be very honest with you wow it's like it's not a big
14:38deal it's just like yeah i did this and he's very open about it which is really kind of throwing
14:44me
14:44the next thing he says really alarms me there was an incident in arsona in 2003 where i've been
14:52talking with a person online today we're 13 14 a similar situation happened where law enforcement
14:59were involved there were never any charges so whatever examination or further examination they
15:05did at that time for hailed not enough for them to arrest you correct how was they arrested
15:10this probably explains why he's so calm and so cooperative and i guess it sort of explains how
15:15he knew what the law was and quoted it back to me when i asked him initially he's been here
15:20before
15:20he just can't stop
15:31may 2022 tony joins the fbi on a dawn raid
15:40the feds have intel that someone living at this property downloaded hundreds of images of child
15:46sexual abuse material they must find out was it the father mr allen yes sir or the son i'm with
15:54the
15:54task force can you come with me the reality turns out to be more twisted than tony could ever imagine
16:06usually we focus in on one suspect but this case unbelievably this was a father and son duo
16:13samuel allen and his son christopher allen we had solid evidence that one of these guys was responsible
16:22for downloading child sex abuse material but figuring out which one was a real challenge
16:32i get cases a number of ways sometimes i'm out there seeking a predator to hit on me in an
16:37undercover
16:38capacity sometimes i get a tip from the public in this case it came to me through jen mullican
16:43my contact at the fbi jen works on the child exploitation unit it's a real pleasure to work
16:49with her because she is in it to win it and it doesn't matter what the sacrifice is
16:56in may 2022 i get a notification that somebody in the dallas fort worth metroplex is downloading child
17:02sexual abuse material via peer-to-peer platform peer-to-peer file sharing is where two particular
17:08users share direct computer to computer without having to go through another platform some of the
17:15images are of children under 10 years old it's horrendous to look at it's horrendous to know that
17:20it's being produced i subpoenaed the service provider for the ip address i get an address and i get a
17:27name samuel allen he's 58 years old i run the name through the dmb database and i get an address
17:37and
17:38that address is the same on the ip address information that tells me that i definitely have the right place
17:43i also get his vehicle information a black 2014 mazda and i find out that samuel allen lives at that
17:50residence with a wife a daughter and a son the son's name is christopher allen
18:00predominantly this kind of activity is conducted by males so i'm going to focus my investigation
18:05on samuel and christopher allen a check of further database records shows that samuel allen is an
18:11engineer christopher is a teacher he could be producing images and videos depicting any of the
18:19students in his classes this becomes a top priority case i have got to find out what's going on at
18:25this house i get a search warrant and we pick a date to approach the house and knock on the
18:31door
18:32and see what's going on in there
18:51i've done hundreds and hundreds of these raids you never lose that kind of excitement
18:58that is the loudest knock and announce i've ever heard in my life
19:02open the door open it i bet sam allen is dropping a deuce
19:13it's the police open the door open the door watch it suddenly somebody comes to the door
19:26samuel allen he has no idea what's going on no i don't own any weapons mr allen yes ma'am
19:34i mean yes sir all right listen we're going to take these handcuffs off you i just need you to
19:38cooperate yeah sure okay yes all right yeah i know we got you out of bed and you're all a
19:42little
19:43yes i don't know what the heck we're gonna walk over to this truck and we have a conversation with
19:47you
19:47okay sir okay come with me yes let's get in the front seat sam as it turns out
19:53this is going to be an interview unlike anything i've ever done before
20:01detective tony godwin interviews samuel allen to unlock the mystery of who at his home
20:07downloaded child sexual abuse material via a peer-to-peer network i am on what's called the
20:14northern texas internet crimes against children test okay okay what i'm here today about specifically is
20:21child pornography illicit material is being shared back and forth from here at this house uploaded
20:28downloaded is that something you've ever done or participated in just downloading regular porn
20:34regular porn yeah okay do you do anything related to file sharing i've done things related to
20:45downloading but not sharing like what music movies that kind of stuff downloading movies okay from the
20:52internet this is an image of a young girl performing an oral sex act on a male does that look
21:00familiar to
21:00you at all no all i'm doing is watching him and his expressions he did his like a ooh face
21:08like
21:09like he was in disagreement and that was a very immediate response so it seemed genuine he's
21:15clearly denying that it's him i do think i need to have a chat with the son as well
21:24fbi agents are detaining christopher allen in another vehicle as tony approaches one of the
21:30agents hands him christopher's phone now i want to know what's on this device hey christopher
21:38hey i'm tony godlin i'm with the task force can you come with me we're going to switch trucks over
21:43here and i want to have a conversation with you about some stuff this is my body can we gotta
21:49have
21:50that going that's part of our process look at the guy's face he literally looks sick maybe you were
21:57right when you were thinking that maybe it wasn't the dad that was doing it when i tell you that
22:02everybody here on this task force is here related to child exploitation does it give you any indication
22:08why we would be having a conversation with you a few things come to mind tell me about it well
22:18i'm
22:18thinking there are things that i might have come in contact with on the internet that are
22:24related and savory okay and related to kids as we talk about child pornography have you seen those
22:33types of images and videos not involving real life people are you talking about anime or are you talking
22:44about something else drawings yes drawings there is some very very sexually graphic deviant material that's
22:53anime related it's cartoon related or ai generated there is a charge that can be uh levied against
23:00somebody that looks at that but that's not what i'm there to investigate i'm there to investigate
23:06specific child sex abuse material i know was downloaded from that home he just looks like a
23:12balloon ready to pop we just need to stick with it and see what else he's going to come up
23:16with
23:17i held it back for so long and i hated it but i could just ignore it and it would
23:28go away do you look at
23:31child pornography on this specific device this is the device there's like i think over 13 000
23:43you know when you're on these darker parts of the internet there are things you click on that you
24:01shouldn't and then there's a bunch of different pop-ups and sometimes things download but
24:10i don't i don't need anything of that sort christopher does not know what file sharing
24:16is about even though what he's got is a problem he's not our guy all right sir come on out
24:25i need to go back and talk to his dad what i'm thinking at this moment is the apple hasn't
24:30fallen
24:30far from the tree if i was going to go out on a limb and say who's our guy i'm
24:35pointing to samuel he's
24:36the only one that's even made any admission to file sharing and that is why we're here
24:43detective tony godwin questions samuel allen for a second time
24:48here's the thing your son doesn't know anything about file sharing okay nothing i know you said you
24:55look at adult pornography is it possible that you downloaded child pornography in that process if i
25:04did it wasn't knowingly did it wasn't knowingly i don't think so what a weak ass denial if i did
25:12it was
25:12an accident okay you've been investigating child sexual abuse material for years have you ever
25:20accidentally downloaded child porn never not one time it just doesn't happen exactly it's an excuse
25:26that gets brought up in court by so many defendants it doesn't happen if he's being accused of child
25:33pornography he should be angry with you but he's not this is definitely going to be the guy who did
25:39the
25:40file sharing no question in my mind he's just struggling with admitting it since sam allen refuses to
25:47confess tony calls in a canine assistant we're bringing what's called an electronic service dog
25:52to your house he's on his way it'll be about 15 minutes and he'll be here that dog is very
25:57very
25:57specifically trained to sniff out sd cards and sim cards and memory cards right thumb drives that kind
26:05of stuff the esd dogs help us locate devices that could have been missed during a physical search
26:12the dog locates samuel allen's laptop digital forensic specialists scan it for illegal material
26:19on that laptop they found multiple images and videos of child sex abuse material the material found was
26:26what initially triggered the fbi investigation into the allen family so all along it was the father when
26:34jen takes him down to the federal jail samuel changes his position he confesses that he was involved
26:41with child sexual abuse material and obtained these files from the internet a forensic analysis of
26:48christopher allen's phone finds child sexual abuse material as well as the illegal anime that he described
26:54to tony with one search warrant we got two offenders so a two for one per se
27:15this is really pretty extraordinary case you have a father and a son both looking at deviant material
27:22involving kids both of them possessing material that's terrible and neither one of them knows about
27:28each other like that is like mind-blowing to think about
27:35december 2009 tony interrogates the owner of one of the largest collections of child sexual abuse material
27:47of children being sexually exploited tony is used to predators twisting logic to justify their depraved
27:55fantasies but this offender takes it to a whole new level god does everything in your life for a purpose
28:09this guy william mcburnie his addiction to child sexual abuse material is so prolific he must have spent
28:15every waking moment looking at it storing it when we did find this guy the size of the collection shocked
28:22me and my entire team in 2009 i was contacted by a dallas detective a church janitor handed him a
28:33bag
28:34with a laptop and two hard drives that were found inside of a dumpster thinking these might have been
28:39taken in a burglary he searched one of the devices to figure out who they belong to what he actually
28:44found
28:45was a huge amount of child sex abuse material and i mean a huge amount
28:54that detective handed off everything to me because this is the crime type that i work every day
29:00the three devices were a laptop that had an 80 gigabyte hard drive an external hard drive that was 250
29:06gigs and then a third hard drive that was 16 gigabytes in 2009 that that was a big amount of
29:14data
29:14we were used to much smaller devices so what i do is submit these to a lab for analysis and
29:19what i get
29:20back is absolutely staggering 24 gigabytes 16 922 images 1442 videos containing child sex abuse material
29:33from the ages of two months old things that i'm never going to be able to unsee babies
29:42i am absolutely determined to figure out who this is and put him in jail
29:50detective tony godwin analyzes hard drives containing child sexual abuse material for clues that will
29:57reveal who dumped them there's an ocean of material on these drives there's just image
30:01after image after image i don't want to have to see it but i have to do it it pays
30:07off i'm able to find
30:08some photos that are not pornographic and they're dated back to 2004 this middle-aged white male with
30:15a mustache maybe this is our guy the photos are in a folder with the name of william
30:23one of the photos shows a woman and a young child that looks to be about five years of age
30:27this could be a family photo or this could be you know a guy with his daughter and his grandkid
30:33it's
30:33really kind of hard to determine now there's a child involved it just ups the ante it just raises
30:39the priority level and the importance of figuring out who he is and where he is i find some other
30:44pictures of motorcycles a car and a van in one of the photos i can see a license plate this
30:51i can use
30:52i take the information i found i pass it on to my colleague clint mcnear see what he can find
30:57i run the license plate through the dmv here in texas and i get a name william turner mcburney
31:05in the date of birth september 14th 1952 the photo and the driver's license matches the photo
31:13that tony had found during the evidence search the address on his driver's license
31:18is one mile from the church where the evidence had been dumped
31:25on december 8th of 2009 and i'm watching the house like a hawk i sit there for basically a whole
31:31day and i don't see any signs of life i try again i go back for a second day i
31:37sit there the whole day
31:38i see nothing on day three i get a little luck i see a woman and child leave the front
31:45of the residence
31:46and they turn around to say goodbye and i see her kiss and embrace a white male that's in the
31:51doorway
31:52it's william mcburney it's confirmation that he's got a child what that does is make this the biggest
31:59priority i have we have to act fast we put together a search warrant and an arrest warrant and within
32:06two
32:07hours we're back at this residence knocking on the door of this predator
32:13body-worn cameras are yet to become standard issue for texas police officers tony and his team do wear
32:20audio recording devices
32:30hello hello there what we found behind this door something i'm never going to forget
32:37mcburney i'm detective god i'd like to have a conversation with you it's fine i'm bill he really
32:43does sound pretty harmless and pretty friendly but it's going to go one of two ways either he's going
32:49to climb up or he's going to open up like a book and he's just going to tell me everything
32:52bill have
32:54you ever possessed compromise yes sir i have i had a laptop i threw that into the church dumpster up
33:02the street what led you to throw that away you might say it's an addiction you want to leave that
33:08behind wouldn't it be nice if all predators when they throw their computer away they just stopped
33:13praying on children that would be kind of a rare thing that doesn't happen very often you had more
33:18than 680 images of infants being raped i haven't been fooling with it i haven't fooled with child
33:26pornography since i threw those away those computers were under your name those are your files
33:32just because you throw it away didn't mean the crime didn't happen and clearly he can't grasp that
33:37william mcburney's arrested for possession of child pornography for the material found in the
33:41dumpster i have a warrant for your arrest right now to take you to jail you can you read it
33:48out
33:48loud for me i have the right to remain silent and not make any statement at all any statement i
33:54make
33:54may be used in evidence against me at my trial do you understand that i understand he's really chill
34:01pretty laid back like his only real concern is like wanting to change clothes can i put some long
34:06pants on we'll get you some pants and get you a jacket and some shoes uh and you will go
34:10down to
34:11the jail and get booked in all right sir tony's team searches mcburney's residence a number of devices
34:18were found at mcburney's residence works were all seized to be examined at the forensic lab
34:24one device is a thumb drive found inside the pocket of the shorts that mcburney removed when he was
34:29arrested tony interrogates mcburney at the police department in nearly 20 years in this line of
34:38work i've listened to predators use all manner of excuses to justify their behavior but nothing as
34:43weird as what mcburney's about to tell me we got your computer those hard drives uh that were found
34:52and um it was turned over to the police like right away and we fired our neighbors they kept trying
35:03to
35:03get me to go to church and one day i went to a uh a family life group and uh
35:10and i got saved good god does
35:14everything in your life for a purpose he said bill your sins are forgiven so i said by god if
35:20i don't
35:20get up now throw it away right now i won't be able to throw it away you know i put
35:25it down
35:26right i don't want it i'm food with it the material involves the sexual abuse and rape of young
35:32children some infant age i don't really think jesus would be too condoning of that kind of behavior
35:39the fact that he threw it away means nothing he's going to have to suffer the consequences for his
35:44actions on this one charge that you have tonight is very likely going to extend into additional
35:51charges did you go to the prison yeah you could go for a long time mcburney is charged with five
35:58counts of possession of child pornography the next day on december 11 2009 much to my surprise there's bad
36:07news william mcburney is able to make a 25 000 bond and he's released until we go to trial
36:14it's not something i was expecting i didn't necessarily agree with it but the law is the law
36:22usually i don't hear from a suspect once they make bond but with mcburney it's different
36:31it's embarrassing it's humiliating the authority what we threw it was when we were away like
36:36two block full nine months we gave my lord to jesus christ it's uh through in the trials
36:41the intentions of but uh will we take it so we didn't stay in the trials this dude's all over
36:48the tv
36:49i think it's something that he's hopeful that'll be used in court to kind of help his plight
36:54that dog just not going to hunt with me detective tony godwin digs into the background of william
37:01mcburney the self-confessed hoarder of child sexual abuse material we put out a press release and let
37:08the public know if you have any information about william mcburney or his activities please reach out
37:14to us so we can investigate it several members of the public did provide information and there were
37:19allegations of sexual abuse with kids in the past as well as allegations about sexual tourism but
37:24none of those allegations were ever proven to be true one person tells tony's team that it should
37:30search mcburney's former residence there was an allegation that william mcburney drilled a hole from
37:36an attic space through the wall into a bathroom that was used by a child in the home that he
37:42was
37:43possibly recording while she was in the shower we searched mcburney's former residence behind the
37:49wall above the bath we find evidence that a peephole has been drilled and then filled in it should be
37:55noted that the allegations did not involve any of the current family members that were in the home when
38:00he was arrested we also learned of a storage facility kind of off site from his property and in that
38:08location was a van and in that van were a laptop computer 13 cds and books all of which are
38:16also
38:16seized the lab can follow up and figure out what exactly we have the team also sends to the lab
38:23the
38:23thumb drive from the shorts that mcburney removed when he was arrested we discovered 34
38:314764 more images of child pornography this larger quantity i've never seen this before the extreme
38:41young age of them the guy's a monster then on the usb device found in his shorts there's 11 images
38:48and 55
38:49videos of children engaging in horrible horrible sex acts this discovery suggests that mcburney was in
38:57the process of downloading child sexual abuse material when tony and clint knocked on his door six days
39:04earlier when clint comes and tells me the enormity of child sex abuse material found on the seized devices
39:10i'm telling you i'm speechless but the most important factor is the thumb drive that was in his pocket
39:16tells me that all of that rhetoric that william mcburney spouted on the tv is a complete lie investigators
39:25find no evidence that william mcburney's wife and child feature in any of the child's sexual abuse
39:31material recovered from the electronic devices
39:35on december 17th of 2009 we rearrested william mcburney on five additional counts of possession
39:42or promotion of child pornography i get the interview mcburney a second time tony asked mcburney about the
39:48spy hole discovered in one of his former residences
39:52tell me about the hole in the wall where the top of the wall by the bathroom and where the
39:58tub is
39:58upstairs or downstairs it was upstairs the top girl all the wall and looked at it you did that yes
40:06and
40:07how big of a hole are we talking about a very very small i will say it's very rare i
40:12don't get someone in
40:13here to that shares the truth with me as much as i think that you have tony let me tell
40:19you one
40:19thing i have never touched any child and i've never abused any child and i've never done any
40:30hurting anybody or anything like that i don't know if you believe it or not but i'll tell you the
40:35truth
40:35without talking the truth about everything else next tony grills mcburney about the huge haul of
40:43child sexual abuse material found at the storage unit and the files on his thumb drive there is more
