Discover the surprising reason why Valve co-founder Gabe Newell is no longer hands-on with game development. According to a former colleague, his own legendary status made honest collaboration impossible.

00:00Gabe Newell's a true rarity in the game industry, having found massive success both
00:05creatively and in business through Valve, but a drawback of such accomplishments is that it's
00:10hard for him to find people to honestly collaborate with in developing projects,
00:15resulting in him stepping back from actively making games.
00:18That's according to Josh Weir, the project lead designer on Portal 2,
00:22who told KiwiTalks about how Newell realised he was surrounded by yes people.
00:27He always wanted to be part of the team, but being Gabe and being in his position,
00:32that never really worked, he recalls. Because people would be like,
00:36whatever you say, and he was more like, no no no, I want to be part of the team and
00:41come up with ideas,
00:43Weir states. That was really hard for people, so I think there was a period where he stepped back
00:48and was like, alright, I guess I'm just not going to be able to interact with everyone that way.
00:53Newell is credited as a producer on the second Portal, and for the most part,
00:58his participation on Valve releases afterwards is reduced to thanks or generic credit as part of
01:03Valve as a whole. He seems to just oversee things now, and likely offers his insight on occasion,
01:09but from the sounds of Weir's comments, it's rare he'll really get his hands dirty.
01:14Anyway, he's too busy getting Half Life 3 ready for the steam machine, right?
01:19I'm on to you, Gabe.
01:20I'm on to you, Gabe.
