00:00USB-A port. This is the most recognizable port in the world of computing. The wide rectangular
00:07connector has been a standard feature on computers, laptops, chargers and accessories since the mid
00:131990s. It was designed as a universal connection point that could handle everything from keyboards
00:20and mice to flash drives and cameras. USB-A only inserts one way which has frustrated users for
00:27decades, but its reliability and widespread adoption kept it relevant for over 20 years.
00:34Even today, most laptops and desktop computers include at least one USB-A port alongside newer
00:41connector types. USB-C port. This small oval-shaped port completely changed the way devices connect to
00:50each other. Unlike its predecessors, USB-C is fully reversible, meaning it can be inserted either way
00:57without looking. It supports significantly faster data transfer speeds, higher power delivery and can
01:04even carry video signals, making it capable of replacing multiple port types with a single
01:10connection. Laptops, smartphones, tablets and accessories have rapidly adopted USB-C as their
01:17primary port. Its versatility is the reason many modern ultra-thin laptops ship with USB-C as their
01:25only port type. HDMI port. The high-definition multimedia interface port became the standard way to send high
01:34quality video and audio from one device to another through a single cable. It replaced the older and more
01:41complicated setups that required separate cables for video and audio signals. Televisions, monitors, projectors,
01:49laptops and gaming consoles all use HDMI as a primary display output. The port has a distinctive trapezoid shape
01:58that makes it easy to identify. Different versions of HDMI have been released over the years, each supporting
02:05higher resolutions and refresh rates to keep pace with advancing display technology. DisplayPort. DisplayPort was developed
02:14specifically for connecting computers to monitors and display devices. It looks similar to HDMI but with
02:21one angled corner that makes it asymmetrical. DisplayPort supports very high resolutions and extremely high
02:28refresh rates which is why it became the preferred choice among professional users, video editors and gamers
02:35who demand the best possible display performance. It also supports daisy chaining which means multiple monitors
02:42can be connected in a chain from a single port. A smaller version called mini DisplayPort was widely used on
02:50Apple
02:50computers for several years before USB-C took over. VGA port. The video graphics array port is one of the
02:59oldest display
03:00connectors still occasionally found on computers and projectors today. It was introduced in the late 1980s and became the
03:08dominant monitor connection standard for over two decades. The port is large and trapezoidal with 15 small
03:15pins arranged in three rows and it requires screw fasteners on both sides to stay firmly connected. VGA
03:23only carries analog video signals which means it cannot match the image quality of modern digital connections.
03:30Despite being largely replaced by HDMI and DisplayPort, VGA ports still appear on older projectors and business monitors
03:39in offices and conference rooms around the world. Ethernet port. The Ethernet port, also called an RJ45 port, provides a

03:49internet connection directly to a device. It is wider than a standard phone jack and has eight internal contacts instead
03:57of four. Wired connections through
04:00Ethernet are significantly more stable and faster than wireless connections which is why it remains the
04:06preferred choice for desktop computers, gaming setups and professional workstations. As laptops became thinner
04:14over the years, many manufacturers removed the Ethernet port to save space leading to the rise of USB to
04:21Ethernet adapters. In situations where a reliable and fast connection is essential, nothing replaces a direct
04:28Ethernet cable. Audio jack. The 3.5 millimeter audio jack is a small circular port that has carried
04:37headphone and microphone signals on electronic devices for decades. Despite its age, it remains one of the
04:43most universally understood ports in existence. Headphones, earphones, speakers and microphones all connect through
04:52this simple round opening. Some devices use a single combined port for both input and output, while others
04:59provide two separate ports, one for headphones and one for a microphone. The widespread removal of the
05:06headphone jack from smartphones starting in the mid-2010s sparked significant debate, but the port continues to
05:13appear on laptops, desktop computers and audio equipment. Slot teeth. The SD card slot allows small,
05:22removable memory cards to be inserted directly into a device for reading or writing data. It is a flat,
05:29rectangular opening commonly found on laptops, desktop computers and digital cameras. Photographers and
05:36videographers rely heavily on SD card slots to quickly transfer large image and video files from their
05:43cameras to their computers without needing additional cables or adapters. As laptops became slimmer, SD card
05:50slots were removed from many models, though several manufacturers have brought them back following feedback
05:56from professional users who found the omission inconvenient. Thunderbolt port. Thunderbolt is a high performance
06:04connection standard developed by Intel in collaboration with Apple. It uses the same physical connector as
06:11USB-C, but operates at dramatically faster speeds, making it capable of transferring large files, driving
06:19multiple high-resolution displays and connecting professional external hardware all through a single port.
06:26Thunderbolt ports are identified by a small lightning bolt symbol printed next to the opening. They are most commonly
06:33found on premium laptops and desktop computers aimed at professionals in fields like video production,
06:40music production and software development. Not all USB-C cables work at Thunderbolt speeds. Only certified
06:47Thunderbolt cables unlock the full performance. Power port. The power port is the connection point through
06:54which a device receives electricity from an external adapter or charger. On older laptops, this was a circular
07:02barrel-shaped connector that varied in size across different manufacturers, meaning chargers were rarely
07:08interchangeable. Modern laptops increasingly use USB-C as their power port, which has the significant
07:15advantage of allowing any compatible USB-C charger to power the device regardless of brand. Desktop computers
07:24connect to power through a large rectangular IEC connector at the back of the machine. The shift towards USB-C
07:31power delivery has simplified charging considerably, reducing the number of cables and adapters people
