00:40I've been working with MINI since the 1990s and I drive a MINI, I've been driving a MINI every day
00:49for many many years and it was in the 90s when I was asked to make a one-off car
00:56and I did what is now quite a well-known
00:59multi-stripe car which has 26 colours and 82 stripes and so I did that and then I did a
01:08limited edition car then I did a special sustainability concept car and so the relationship between Paul Smith and MINI
01:19has been from the heart completely natural, truthful and I drive a MINI every day
01:26so that's why I love working with MINI
01:29I was very pleased to have a visit maybe four or five years ago now from the MINI team in
01:38Munich and they said we were very keen to work with you again and this time maybe with a production
01:47car
01:47and so obviously I was very excited about that because often there were concept cars and so it just seemed
01:56like a natural thing MINI's huge history made in Britain created in Britain in the 1950s Paul Smith made in
02:07Britain still going after 55 years and a company like mine we're working in 65 countries around the world
02:16so it was just an obvious joining of British brands and so the idea was to do a MINI which
02:24is like the production MINI but giving the twist and the character that I have in everything I do so
02:33little secrets everywhere and I can show you them if you want but they're really nice.
02:39So we're here in Milan right now the famous week which is called Salone di Mobile which is a big
02:46design week one of the biggest weeks in Milan bigger than the fashion week just very very popular week where
02:55people show their new ideas and new designs so for me it's a natural thing to be here this week
03:03and we happen to be here this week and we happen to be in this amazing garden which is right
03:07in the centre of town in Via Manzoni and so what we hope is that the visitors can come they
03:15can enjoy looking at the two of the old cars from the past and two of the new cars we
03:23also have a lovely little booth over there where you can play with colour and mix colour which is something
03:29I'm famous for
03:30have a coffee have a coffee have something to eat sit in the garden and in this busy week of
03:37the Salone just enjoy relaxing here and that would be great.
03:46So this is obviously the soft off mini we we're making the mini combustion engine electric the three door five
03:57door I mean it's the whole range of minis got the colour which I love this colour combination of a
04:06very what I feel like is almost like an antique white almost cream with this beautiful green
04:13colour but if you come in here but if you come in here and have a look here so the
04:17first thing you see is here where it says every day is a new beginning and this is in my
04:23handwriting and the idea of that is that you know the world is a crazy place right now so when
04:31you come and you press the fob there's a projection onto the floor that says hello and then that's in
04:38my handwriting every day is a new beginning means that in the times of
04:43trouble and strange world we live in it's a very optimistic thing now if you come here come and have
04:49a look here look this is exclusive to the car especially woven you know I'm famous for my stripes you
04:57probably know that so here we put elements of the stripe into the steering wheel blue stitching now if you

05:07this is the stripe but in self colour so black on black so texture smooth texture smooth so this is
05:18the porcelain stripe so you see the blue here so it's blue and black together and this is the stripe
05:25again a little porcelain sign here I hope you enjoy it and come and have a look yourself thanks
05:32Well Salone and Milan actually is the global stage you know there's a lot of designers here and we inspire
05:42people we try to inspire people and we are inspired so very important for me to be here I think
05:48it's a brand that fits perfectly to Italy this car this edition this collaboration fits perfectly to Italy so I'm
05:54very happy to be here at Palazzo Borromeo Dada at the Salone this is a very exciting week
06:02for us at MINI well this collaboration with Paul is really the largest product range we have done on a
06:10production car so far and it spans our entire portfolio it is the three door the five door it is
06:18the electric version of the MINI the combustion engine as well as the convertible which you see right behind me
06:24here so you wonder why we call this exhibition this year the garden of curiosity because you enter the space
06:32is the palazzo through the courtyard and in the courtyard we have three cars first of all there are two
06:38previous collaborations with Paul one is the stripe from 1999 and the second one is the mini strip from 2021
06:46which was all about sustainability and stripping down a Cooper to its essence and the third car in the front
06:53is actually part of this new collaboration in midnight black with a black roof and signature striping
06:59very very very beautiful sophisticated and subtle design and then you come to this wonderful backyard through a red door
07:08the mystical red door which was used previously in this campaign and you enter this beautiful serene quiet space in
07:18the middle of a bustling city in Milan and it allows you to have some quiet time some atmospheric time
07:25some conversations with other designers with people you meet here
07:29we have built in little nooks for relaxing for having a nice coffee and there's three exhibits here in the
07:39back one is the listening room where you can listen to Paul's original voice we recorded his voice giving you
07:45some deep insights into this collaboration the design thinking and his philosophy and then we have a color room over
07:52there which features all of his signature colors that make up his signature stripe
07:58so the stripe so the stripe he's using on a lot of his apparel and there you can explore and
08:04especially the visitors this week can play with colors in this room tack them to the wall and and see
08:10kind of how colors react with one another and last but not least we have another car here from this
08:17latest edition which is the convertible in inspired white with the typical design details in Nottingham green and again a
08:27lovely option
08:28that is part of this collaboration so please enjoy the space this week the weather plays nicely and it really
