00:01The International Criminal Court's pretrial chamber confirms all charges against Rodrigo Duterte,
00:07which means he goes on trial. The Sandigan Bayan approves the Ombudsman's request that former
00:12Speaker Martin Romualdez be barred from leaving the country. Iran tightens control over the Strait
00:18of Hormuz after the US calls off attacks. Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. says
00:24a reset with China would depend on their good faith. And Filipino tennis star Alex Iala advances
00:30to the second round of the Madrid Open.
00:40Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte will go on trial at the International Criminal Court.
00:46This after the ICC's pretrial chamber confirmed all the charges against Duterte on Thursday,
00:51April 23. Charges against him include three counts of crimes against humanity of murder,
00:57covering 49 incidents of killings and 78 victims. Pre-child chamber one concluded that there are
01:03substantial grounds to believe that Mr. Duterte is responsible for the crimes against humanity of
01:09murder and attempted murder. It was a unanimous decision by an all-women chamber composed of
01:15judges Julia Antonello Motoc, Reyn Alapini Gansu, and Maria del Socorro Flores Liera. Unlike other
01:22decisions, this decision cannot be appealed automatically. This means Duterte cannot go
01:27straight to the appeals chamber to file a challenge. And if Duterte wants to appeal,
01:32he has to request authorization to do so. The ICC will now have to constitute a trial chamber,
01:37which will proceed to holding status conferences among all parties. The Sindigan Bayan approved the
01:45Office of the Ombudsman's request to block former Speaker Martin Romualdez from leaving the country
01:49Wednesday, April 22. The Ombudsman filed a precautionary hold departure order to prevent
01:55Romualdez from traveling overseas for his angioplasty surgery. Romualdez was granted a travel
02:01clearance on April 20. He was supposed to travel from April 20 to May 4, but the Ombudsman only requested
02:07the order on April 21. Romualdez faces complaints before the Ombudsman for plunder,
02:12graft, money laundering, and direct and indirect bribery. The Ombudsman alleges Romualdez is the
02:18purported mastermind behind the kickback scheme with the Ghost Flood Control Projects.
02:22In the meantime, the former Speaker's Lawyer, Ade Fajardo, confirms he is still in the country.
02:27Any report or insinuation that he has fled is false and irresponsible.
02:36Iran seizes two ships in the Strait of Hormuz after US President Donald Trump indefinitely calls
02:42off attacks, risking continuation of peace talks. This after Trump announced on Tuesday that the
02:48US would extend the ceasefire with Iran for negotiations. But Iranian officials say they
02:53had not agreed to any extension of the ceasefire, and tightens its grip on the waterway.
02:58Iran says the US blockade of Iran's trade by the sea is still considered as an act of war.
03:04Iran's lead negotiator, Mohammad Bakher Khalibaf says,
03:07A full ceasefire only makes sense if the blockade was lifted.
03:11Khalibaf says,
03:12You did not achieve your goals through military aggression, and you will not achieve them by
03:16bullying either. The only way is recognizing the Iranian people's rights.
03:22Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. says a reset with the Chinese government would depend on their
03:28good faith. This as a response when asked what he would do to reset ties with China as Chinese forces
03:34continue to harass Philippine vessels in the West Philippine Sea.
03:37Any country which approaches us in good faith will not be worried about our defense resilience,
03:42because then the motives are clear.
03:44In an interview with Bloomberg, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said a reset in bilateral
03:50ties with Beijing is something that's certainly going to happen in light of the war on Iran by the
03:54US and Israel. Diplomatic engagements between Manila and Beijing have steadily increased since the
04:00year began. But China continues to aggressively occupy and harass local vessels in the West Philippine
04:06Sea. Teodoro says the Philippines' policy to expose China's hostile actions in the area will still
04:12continue.
04:15Filipina tennis star Alex Ayala advances to the second round of the Madrid Open for the third
04:20straight year after a 6-3-6-3 win over Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
04:25While Ayala sits at No. 44 in the world and Pavlyuchenkova is far behind at No. 116,
04:31but the Russians still proved to be a handful given her proficiency on clay.
04:35Ayala held her own as she broke her opponent four times in the match that took 1 hour and 31
04:40minutes
04:41to end. She will battle No. 21 Elise Mertens of Belgium in the round of 64 on Thursday, April 23.
04:48A win will mark a breakthrough for Ayala, who is seeking to make the third round in Madrid for the
04:53first time in five tries.
