Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer claims it was an "error of judgement" from Olly Robbins to deliberately withhold the failed security checks of Peter Mandelson before he became US Ambassador. The PM who sacked the civil servant insists he would not have appointed Mandelson if the information was brought to his attention.

00:00Look, I strongly think that the outcome of the security clearance exercise, the
00:09developed vetting exercise, was important and should have been brought to my
00:14attention and could have been brought to my attention and had it been brought to
00:16my attention before Peter Mandelson took up his post then I wouldn't have
00:21appointed them. I think it was a serious error of judgment. It's very important to
00:26make clear to everybody that Sir Ali Robbins does not suggest he did tell me
00:32that information, he makes it clear he took a decision not to give me that
00:35information. I think that was the wrong decision but all of the allegations that
00:40have been that he wouldn't have told me, he must have told me, I couldn't be telling
00:44the truth about this, they're all allegations by my political opponents,
00:48all of which have been found to be a case that just can't be substantiated.
